2. Improving the filtration properties for manganese tetroxide mud utilizing perlite particles to drill wide-range permeability sandstone formation

Abstract

Abstract A required feature of any drilling formulation is to mitigate the formation damage by having an excellent filtration and filter cake properties. The key factor for preventing and limiting formation damage is to improve the sealing qualities of the planned drilling fluid. In this study, a new novel filtration agent called “perlite” was introduced for improving the manganese tetroxide mud cake ability for better sealing features. The perlite particles were loaded to formulation containing the manganese tetroxide as weighting agent. The water-based drilling mud was designed at high densities (14.25 and 17.2 ppg). Perlite was added in varied concentrations to reach the optimum performance. The filtration test conducted at reservoir temperature of 250 °F and a differential pressure of 300 psi to form the filter cake. The tests were performed using sandstone cores with two different permeability categories (low and high permeabilities) as the filtration media. This gave the full picture of perlite performance as implemented for different formation properties and considering the drilling fluid properties. The formed filter cake structure and chemical composition was evaluated using scanning electron energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM–EDS). The presented results illustrated how the perlite was compatible to be added to the manganese tetroxide weighting agents in the same formulation. In addition, it has the capacity to improve the filter cake's sealing qualities, lowering the filtration volume by 41% and the filter cake internal and external layers permeability by 58% and 25%, respectively. Abstract

The utility of DWI in the spine has been established and continues to grow in clinical practice. DWI raises the MR imaging sensitivity of lesion detection and improves the conspicuity of many spinal pathologies. Applications include evaluation of spinal cord infarction, bone marrow lesions, infection, degenerative disease, trauma, osteoporosis, malignancy, and response to therapy. In this article, we provide a case-based review to illustrate and discuss these uses. We also highlight DWI acquisition techniques and challenges. We provide protocol optimization tips that help to overcome these challenges and permit incorporation of DWI into the workflow. Abstract

Calcifying pseudoneoplasm of the neuraxis (CAPNON) is a rare tumour-like fibro-osseous lesion in the neuraxis including the spine. It is diagnosed by the presence of the following histological features: granular amorphous to chondromyxoid fibrillary cores with calcification/ossification, peripheral palisading of spindle to epithelioid cells, variable fibrous stroma, and foreign body reaction with multinucleated giant cells, as well as positive NF-L immunostaining. Spinal CAPNON is sometimes named as tumoural calcinosis that is tumour-like dystrophic calcification usually in the periarticular tissue and also described in calcified synovial cyst (CSC). We examined clinical, radiological and pathological features of five spinal CAPNONs and 21 spinal CSCs including three recurrent lesions. The results demonstrated some radiological and pathological overlaps between these two entities, as well as distinct features of each entity to be diagnosed. All CAPNONs showed the diagnostic histological features with NF-L positivity mainly in lesion cores and variable CD8+ T-cells. In contrast, CSCs exhibited the synovial lining and variable degenerative/reactive changes with some CAPNON-like features, but mostly no to occasionally limited NF-L positivity and less CD8+ T-cells with statistically significant differences between groups of CAPNONs and CSCs. Four CSCs contained CAPNON-like foci with the CAPNON diagnostic features including prominent NF-L positivity, and some transitional features from CSC to CAPNON. As the pathogenesis of CAPNON is likely reactive/degenerative in association with an inflammatory/immunological process involving NF-L protein deposition, our findings suggest the link between spinal CAPNON and CSC, with possible transition from CSC to CAPNON or CAPNON developing in reaction to CSC.

Abstract

This work aims to study the optoelectronic and thermoelectric properties of the new perovskites LiSnX3 (X = Br or I). This study is carried out by using the density functional theory (DFT) combined with the Boltzmann transport theory. First, the investigation of the structural, electronic and optical properties of such materials, using the Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA), has been performed. This latter method has been performed under the Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof (GGA–PBE) approximation applying the exchange correlation potential. It is found that the two compounds exhibit a p-type semiconductor characteristic and interesting optical properties. Moreover, the thermoelectric properties of the studied materials, such as the Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, figure of merit and power factor, have been examined. It is found that the Seebeck coefficient takes positive values. This finding reveals and confirms the p-type semiconductor characteristic for two studied compounds. On the other hand, such materials display large values of the figure of merit (ZT) in comparison with the existing thermoelectric materials. Such large values of ZT are found for both small or large temperature values. The obtained results of the optoelectronic and thermoelectric properties show that these materials could be useful both for photovoltaic and thermoelectric applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper explores the photovoltaic and thermoelectric properties of composites consisting of NaSnX3 (X = Br or I). The study uses density functional theory in conjunction with the Boltzmann Transport Theory. Initially, the structural, electronic, and optical properties of the materials are inspected using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) based on the Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof approximation (GGA-PBE) with consideration of the cross-correlation potential. The findings reveal that the studied compounds exhibit a p-type semiconductor character along with intriguing optical properties. Afterward, the thermoelectric properties of the materials are examined and discussed in the second part of the study. This analysis includes the Seebeck coefficient, electrical and thermal conductivities, the figure of merit, and the power factor. It is observed that the Seebeck coefficient demonstrates positive values, confirming the p-type semiconducting properties of the two materials under study. Additionally, these compounds exhibit significant values of the figure of merit (ZT) values when compared to existing thermoelectric materials. Abstract

Background: Risdiplam is an orally administered therapy that modifies pre-mRNA splicing of the survival of motor neuron 2 (SMN2) gene and is approved for the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy. The FIREFISH study is investigating the safety and efficacy of risdiplam in treated infants with type 1 spinal muscular atrophy versus historical controls. The primary endpoint of part 2 of the FIREFISH study showed that infants with type 1 spinal muscular atrophy attained the ability to sit without support for at least 5 s after 12 months of treatment. Here, we report on the safety and efficacy of risdiplam in FIREFISH part 2 over 24 months of treatment. Methods: FIREFISH is an ongoing, multicentre, open-label, two-part study. In FIREFISH part 2, eligible infants (aged 1-7 months at enrolment, with a genetically confirmed diagnosis of spinal muscular atrophy, and two SMN2 gene copies) were enrolled in 14 hospitals in ten countries across Europe, North America, South America, and Asia. Risdiplam was orally administered once daily at 0·2 mg/kg for infants between 5 months and 2 years of age; once an infant reached 2 years of age, the dose was increased to 0·25 mg/kg. Infants younger than 5 months started at 0·04 mg/kg (infants between 1 month and 3 months old) or 0·08 mg/kg (infants between 3 months and 5 months old), and this starting dose was adjusted to 0·2 mg/kg once pharmacokinetic data were available for each infant. The primary and secondary endpoints included in the statistical hierarchy and assessed at month 12 have been reported previously. Here we present the remainder of the secondary efficacy endpoints that were included in the statistical hierarchy at month 24: the ability to sit without support for at least 30 s, to stand alone, and to walk alone, as assessed by the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, third edition gross motor subscale. Abstract

Introduction: The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a variable worldwide impact, likely related to country-level characteristics. In this ecological study, we explored the association of COVID-19 case rates (per 100,000 people) and death rates (per 100,000 people) with country-level population health characteristics, economic and human development indicators, and habitat-related variables. Methods: To calculate country-level COVID-19 case and death rates, the number of cases and deaths were extracted from the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center for 2020. Country-level population health characteristics, economic and human development indicators, and habitat-related variables were extracted from several publicly available online sources of international organizations. Results were tabulated according to world zones and country economies. Univariate and multivariable linear regression analyses were performed to examine determinants of COVID-19 case rates and death rates. Results: A total of 187 countries and territories were analyzed, with an aggregate COVID-19 case rate of 779 per 100,000 people, a death rate of 19 per 100,000 people, and a case-fatality rate of 2.4%. For country-level population health characteristics, a higher percentage rate of adults with obesity and a higher percentage rate of adults with high blood pressure was independently associated with a higher COVID-19 case rate, and a higher percentage rate of adults with obesity was associated with a higher COVID-19 death rate. For country-level economic and human development indicators, only a higher gross domestic product percentage rate spent on total health expenditure and a higher human development index was independently associated with a higher COVID-19 case rate and death rate. A higher percentage of urban population was independently associated with a higher COVID-19 death rate, whereas a higher income per capita was independently associated with a lower COVID-19 death rate. For country-level habitat-related variables, a higher average household size and a higher percentage rate of population with primary reliance on polluting fuels and technologies was independently associated with a lower COVID-19 case rate and death rate whereas a higher percentage rate of households with at least one-member age 65 years or over was associated with a higher case rate and death rates. Conclusion: This ecological study informs the need to develop country-specific public health interventions to better target populations at high risk for COVID-19, and test environmental interventions to prevent indoor transmission of SARS-CoV-2, taking into consideration population health characteristics, economic and human development indicators, and habitat-related variables that are unique to each country.

Abstract

Over the last decade there has been considerable progress in the discovery and development of biomarkers of kidney disease, and several have now been evaluated in different clinical settings. While there is a growing literature on the performance of various biomarkers in clinical studies, there is limited information on how these biomarkers would be utilized by clinicians to manage patients with acute kidney injury (AKI). Recognizing this gap in knowledge, we convened the 10th Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative (ADQI) meeting to review the literature on biomarkers in AKI and their application in clinical practice. We asked an international group of experts to assess four broad areas for biomarker utilization for AKI: risk assessment, diagnosis and staging; differential diagnosis; prognosis and management and novel physiological techniques including imaging. This article provides a summary of the key findings and recommendations of the group, to equip clinicians to effectively use biomarkers in AKI.
