Deneb, the prototype alpha Cygni variable, is a blue-white supergiant that shows irregular variability with quasi-period around 12 days in brightness and radial velocity. Abt et al. (2023) found that larger amplitude 12-day variations appear to resume abruptly and at an arbitrary phase and damp out after several cycles, with an interval of around 70 days between these resumptions. Here we make use of an 8.6-year photometric data set for Deneb from the Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI) to better characterize this behavior. We find that the interval between pulsation resumptions is not exact, with the most common intervals between 100 and 120 days. Sometimes one or more intervals are skipped. We also examine AAVSO and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) light curves for alpha Cyg variables Rigel, Saiph, and Alnilam in Orion, Aludra in Canis Major, and 6 Cas to compare with the behavior of alpha Cyg. Except for 6 Cas, the time series are too short, or the observations too infrequent to draw any conclusions about similarities between the behavior of these stars and alpha Cyg. We also summarize results of evolution and pulsation modeling for Deneb and alpha Cyg variables from the literature. The alpha Cyg variables may not be a homogenous group with a common mechanism for their variability. It has not been determined whether they are on the first crossing of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram toward the red supergiant phase or are on their second crossing after having been red supergiants. Deneb (alpha Cygni) is a bright (V magnitude 1.25) blue-white supergiant (spectral type A2 Ia) which shows variability in both radial velocity and photometric measurements. H. Abt reviewed radial velocity measurements by Paddock (1935) using the Lick observatory 36-inch telescope spectrograph during 1927-1935. Abt noticed resumptions of pulsations with a dominant quasi-period of around 12 days that occur at intervals of around 70 days, and damp out after a few cycles. These resumptions appear to happen at arbitrary phase. Perhaps another event like this was captured in a shorter series of radial velocity measurements by Abt in 1956. We examined subsequent radial velocity and photometric data available in the literature, along with photometric measurements by the TESS spacecraft and V-magnitude observations by AAVSO observers. We find some evidence for periodic resumptions of larger-amplitude pulsations in these data. However, longer contiguous data sets combined with more frequent sampling are needed to confirm this periodicity in resumption of pulsations, and to help answer many more questions about Deneb and the alpha Cygni variables., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures. We present three-dimensional (3D) maps of Jupiter's atmospheric circulation at cloud-top level from Doppler-imaging data obtained in the visible domain with JIVE, the second node of the JOVIAL network, which is mounted on the Dunn Solar Telescope at Sunspot, New Mexico. We report on 12 nights of observations between May 4 and May 30, 2018, representing a total of about 80 hours. Firstly, the average zonal wind profile derived from our data is compatible with that derived from cloud-tracking measurements performed on Hubble Space Telescope images obtained in April 2018 from the Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program. Secondly, we present the first ever two-dimensional maps of Jupiter's atmospheric circulation from Doppler measurements. The zonal velocity map highlights well-known atmospheric features, such as the equatorial hot spots and the Great Red Spot (GRS). In addition to zonal winds, we derive meridional and vertical velocity fields from the Doppler data. The motions attributed to vertical flows are mainly located at the boundary between the equatorial belts and tropical zones, which could indicate active motion in theses regions. Qualitatively, these results compare well to recent Juno data that have unveiled the three-dimensional structure of Jupiter's wind field. To the contrary, the motions attributed to meridional circulation are very different from what is obtained by cloud tracking, except at the GRS. Because of limitations with data resolution and processing techniques, we acknowledge that our measurement of vertical or meridional flows of Jupiter are still to be confirmed.

Mapping the large-scale subsurface plasma flow profile within the Sun has been attempted using various methods for several decades. One such flow in particular is the meridional circulation, for which numerous studies have been published. However, such studies often show disagreement in structure. In an effort to constrain the flow profile from the data, a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo framework has been developed to take advantage of the advances in computing power that allow for the efficient exploration of high-dimensional parameter spaces. This study utilizes helioseismic travel-time difference data covering a span of twenty-one years and a parametrized model of the meridional circulation to find the most likely flow profiles. Tests were carried out on artificial data to determine the ability of this method to recover expected solar-like flow profiles as well as a few extreme cases. We find the method capable of recovering the input flows of both single- and double-cell flow structures. Some inversion results indicate potential differences in meridional circulation between the two solar cycles in terms of both magnitude and morphology, in particular in the mid convection zone. Of these, the most likely solutions show that solar cycle 23 has a large, single-celled profile, while cycle 24 shows weaker flows in general and hints towards a double-celled structure., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Cepheids have long been used as standard candles to determine distances around the Milky Way and to nearby galaxies. A discrepancy still remains for Hubble Constant determinations using Cepheids vs. the cosmic microwave background or calibrations to the tip of the red-giant branch. Therefore, refinement of Cepheid period-luminosity relations continues to be an active topic of research. Cepheids are also important laboratories for testing stellar physics. This paper explores outstanding questions in Cepheid evolution and pulsation modeling. We examine the discrepancy between Cepheid masses determined from pulsation properties and binary orbital dynamics and those determined using stellar evolution models. We review attempts to resolve the discrepancy by including rotation, convective overshooting, and mass loss. We review the impact of uncertainties in nuclear reaction rates on Cepheid evolution and the extent of blue loops in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We consider implications for Cepheids of stellar opacity revisions suggested in light of findings for the Sun and other types of variable stars. We apply the 1-D open-source MESA stellar evolution code and the MESA radial stellar pulsation (RSP) nonlinear hydrodynamics code to investigate changes in input physics for Cepheid models. We touch on progress in 2-D and 3-D stellar modeling applied to Cepheids. Additional areas in which Cepheid models are being tested against observations include: predicting the edges of the Cepheid pulsation instability strip; predicting period-change rates and implications for instability strip crossings; explaining period and amplitude modulations and periodicities that may be non-radial pulsation modes; discovering what can be learned from Cepheid observations in X-ray, ultraviolet, and radio wavelengths. Atmospheric gravity waves (AGWs) are low-frequency, buoyancy-driven waves that are generated by turbulent convection and propagate obliquely throughout the solar atmosphere. Their proposed energy contribution to the lower solar atmosphere and sensitivity to atmospheric parameters (e.g. magnetic fields and radiative damping) highlight their diagnostic potential. We investigate AGWs near a quiet Sun disk center region using multi-wavelength data from the Interferometric BIdimensional Spectrometer (IBIS) and the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). These observations showcase the complex wave behavior present in the entire acoustic-gravity wave spectrum. Using Fourier spectral analysis and local helioseismology techniques on simultaneously observed line core Doppler velocity and intensity fluctuations, we study both the vertical and horizontal properties of AGWs.Propagating AGWs with perpendicular group and phase velocities are detected at the expected temporal and spatial scales throughout the lower solar atmosphere. We also find previously unobserved, varied phase difference distributions among our velocity and intensity diagnostic combinations. Time-distance analysis indicates that AGWs travel with an average group speed of 4.5 kms$^{-1}$, which is only partially described by a simple simulation suggesting that high-frequency AGWs dominate the signal. Analysis of the median magnetic field (4.2 G) suggests that propagating AGWs are not significantly affected by quiet Sun photospheric magnetic fields. Our results illustrate the importance of multi-height observations and the necessity of future work to properly characterize this observed behavior.

NGC 6819 is an open cluster of age 2.4 Gyr that was in the NASA Kepler spacecraft field of view from 2009 to 2013. The central part of the cluster was observed in a 200 x 200 pixel `superstamp' during these four years in 30-minute cadence photometry, providing a unique long time-series high-precision data set. The cluster contains 'blue straggler' stars, i.e., stars on the main sequence above the cluster turnoff that should have left the main sequence to become red giants. We present light curves and pulsation frequency analyses derived from custom photometric reductions for five confirmed cluster members--four blue stragglers and one star near the main-sequence turnoff. Two of these stars show a rich spectrum of $\delta$ Scuti pulsation modes, with 236 and 124 significant frequencies identified, respectively, while two stars show mainly low-frequency modes, characteristic of $\gamma$ Doradus variable stars. The fifth star, a known active x-ray binary, shows only several harmonics of two main frequencies. For the two $\delta$ Scuti stars, we use a frequency separation--mean-density relation to estimate mean density, and then use this value along with effective temperature to derive stellar mass and radius. For the two stars showing low frequencies, we searched for period-spacing sequences that may be representative of gravity-mode or Rossby-mode sequences, but found no clear sequences. The polar regions of Jupiter host a myriad of dynamically interesting phenomena including vortex configurations, folded-filamentary regions (FFRs), and chaotic flows. Juno observations have provided unprecedented views of the high latitudes, allowing for more constraints to be placed upon the troposphere and the overall atmospheric energy cycle. Moist convective events are believed to be the primary drivers of energetic storm behavior as observed on the planet. Here, we introduce a novel single layer shallow water model to investigate the effects of polar moist convective events at high resolution, the presence of dynamical instabilities over long timescales, and the emergence of FFRs at high latitudes. We use a flexible, highly parallelizable, finite-difference hydrodynamic code to explore the parameter space set up by previous models. We study the long term effects of deformation length (Ld), injected pulse size, and injected geopotential. We find that models with Ld beyond 1500 km (planetary Burger number, Bu$=4.4\times10^{-4}$) tend to homogenize their potential vorticity (PV) in the form of dominant stable polar cyclones, while lower Ld cases tend to show less stability with regards to Arnol'd-type flows. We also find that large turbulent forcing scales consistently lead to the formation of high latitude FFRs. Our findings support the idea that moist convection, occurring at high latitudes, may be sufficient to produce the dynamical variety seen at the Jovian poles. Metallic-line A (Am) stars are main-sequence stars of around twice the mass of the Sun that show element abundance peculiarities in their spectra. The radiative levitation and diffusive settling processes responsible for these abundance anomalies should also deplete helium from the region of the envelope that drives delta Scuti pulsations. Therefore, these stars are not expected to be delta Scuti stars, which pulsate in multiple radial and nonradial modes with periods of around 2 hours. As part of the NASA TESS Guest Investigator Program, we proposed photometric observations in 2-minute cadence for samples of bright (visual magnitudes around 7-8) Am stars. Our 2020 SAS meeting paper reported on observations of 21 stars, finding one delta Scuti star and two delta Scuti / gamma Doradus hybrid candidates, as well as many stars with photometric variability possibly caused by rotation and starspots. Here we present an update including 34 additional stars observed up to February 2021, among them three delta Scuti stars and two delta Scuti / gamma Doradus hybrid candidates. Confirming the pulsations in these stars requires further data analysis and follow-up observations, because of possible background stars or contamination in the TESS CCD pixels with scale 21 arc sec per pixel. During the last two years we have received long time-series photometric observations of bright (V mag < 8) main-sequence A- and B-type stars observed by the NASA TESS spacecraft and the Austria-Poland-Canada BRITE satellites. Using TESS observations of metallic-line A (Am) stars having peculiar element abundances, our goal is to determine whether and why these stars pulsate in multiple radial and non-radial modes, as do the delta Scuti stars in the same region of the H-R diagram. The BRITE data were requested to investigate pulsations in bright (V around 6 mag) A- and B-type stars in the Cygnus-Lyra field of view that had been proposed for observations during the now-retired NASA Kepler mission. Of the 21 (out of 62 proposed) Am stars observed by TESS so far, we find one delta Sct star and two delta Sct / gamma Dor hybrid candidates. Of the remaining stars, we find three gamma Dor candidates, six stars showing photometric variations that may or may not be associated with pulsations, and eight stars without apparent significant photometric variability. For the A- and B-type stars observed by BRITE, one star (HR 7403) shows low amplitude low frequency modes that likely are associated with its B(emission) star properties; one star (HR 7179) shows SPB variability that is also found in prior Kepler data, and two stars (HR 7284 and HR 7591) show no variability in BRITE data, although very low amplitude variability was found in TESS or Kepler data. Time-distance helioseismology is a set of powerful tools to study features below the Sun's surface. Inverse methods are needed to interpret time-distance measurements, with many examples in the literature. However, techniques that utilize a more statistical approach to inferences, and broadly used in the astronomical community, are less-commonly found in helioseismology. This article aims to introduce a potentially powerful inversion scheme based on Bayesian probability theory and Monte Carlo sampling that is suitable for local helioseismology. We describe the probabilistic method and how it is conceptually different from standard inversions used in local helioseismology. Several example calculations are carried out to compare and contrast the setup of the problems and the results that are obtained. The examples focus on two important phenomena studied with helioseismology: meridional circulation and supergranulation. Numerical models are used to compute synthetic observations, providing the added benefit of knowing the solution against which the results can be tested. For demonstration purposes, the problems are formulated in two and three dimensions, using both ray- and Born-theoretical approaches. The results seem to indicate that the probabilistic inversions not only find a better solution with much more realistic estimation of the uncertainties, but they also provide a broader view of the range of solutions possible for any given model, making the interpretation of the inversion more quantitative in nature. Unlike the progress being made in fundamental measurement schemes in local helioseismology that image the far side of the Sun, or have detected signatures of global Rossby waves, among many others, inversions of those measurements have had significantly less success. The objective of this work is to determine what fraction of red-giant (RG) stars shows photometric rotational modulation, and understand its origin. One of the underlying questions is the role of close binarity in this population, standing upon the fact that RGs in short-period binary systems (<150 days or so) have been observed to display strong rotational modulation. We select a sample of about 4500 relatively bright RGs observed by Kepler, and show that 370 of them (8%) display rotational modulation. Almost all have oscillation amplitudes below the median of the sample, while 30 of them are not oscillating at all. Of the 85 of these RGs with rotational modulation chosen for follow-up radial-velocity observation and analysis, 34 show clear evidence of spectroscopic binarity. Surprisingly, 26 of the 30 non-oscillators are in this group of binaries. To the contrary, about 85% of the active RGs with detectable oscillations are not part of close binaries. With the help of stellar masses and evolutionary states computed from the oscillation properties, it appears that low-mass red-giant branch stars tend to be magnetically inactive, while intermediate-mass ones tend to be highly active. The opposite trends are true for helium-core burning (red clump) stars, whereby the lower-mass clump stars are comparatively more active and the higher-mass ones less so. In other words, we find that low-mass red-giant branch stars gain angular momentum as they evolve to clump stars, while higher-mass ones lose angular momentum. The trend observed with low-mass stars leads to possible scenarios of planet engulfment or other merging events during the shell-burning phase. Spectroscopic Eclipsing Binaries (SEBs) are fundamental benchmarks in stellar astrophysics and today are observed in breathtaking detail by missions like TESS, Kepler, and APOGEE. We develop a methodology for simultaneous analysis of high precision Kepler light curves and high resolution near-IR spectra from APOGEE and present orbital solutions and evolutionary histories for a subset of SEBs within this overlap. Radial velocities extracted from APOGEE spectra using the Broadening Function technique are combined with Kepler light curves and to yield binary orbital solutions. The Broadening Function approach yields more precise radial velocities than the standard Cross-Correlation Function, which in turn yields more precise orbital parameters and enables the identification of tertiary stars. The orbital periods of these seven SEBs range from 4 to 40 days. Four of the systems (KIC 5285607, KIC 6864859, KIC 6778289, and KIC 4285087) are well-detached binaries. The remaining three systems have apparent tertiary companions, but each exhibits two eclipses along with at least one spectroscopically varying component (KIC 6449358, KIC 6131659, and KIC 6781535). Gaia distances are available for four targets which we use to estimate temperatures of both members of these SEBs. We explore evolutionary histories in H-R diagram space and estimate ages for this subset of our sample. Finally, we consider the implications for the formation pathways of close binary systems via interactions with tertiary companions. Asteroseismology is the only observational tool in astronomy that can probe the interiors of stars, and is a benchmark method for deriving fundamental properties of stars and exoplanets. Over the coming decade, space-based and ground-based observations will provide a several order of magnitude increase of solar-like oscillators, as well as a dramatic increase in the number and quality of classical pulsator observations, providing unprecedented possibilities to study stellar physics and galactic stellar populations. Recent observations of Jupiter have suggested the existence of global oscillatory modes at millihertz frequencies, yet the source mechanism responsible for driving these modes is still unknown. However, the energies necessary to produce observable surface oscillations have been predicted. Here we investigate if moist convection in Jupiter's upper atmosphere can be responsible for driving the global oscillations and what moist convective energy requirements are necessary to achieve these theoretical mode energies and surface amplitudes. We begin by creating a one-dimensional moist convective cloud model and find that the available kinetic energy of the rising cloud column falls below theoretical estimates of oscillations energies. That is, mode excitation cannot occur with a single storm eruption. We then explore stochastic excitation scenarios of the oscillations by moist convective storms. We find that mode energies and amplitudes can reach theoretical estimates if the storm energy available to the modes is more than just kinetic. In order for the modes to be excited, we find that they require $5 \times 10^{27}$ to 10$^{28}$ erg per day. However, even for a large storm eruption each day, the available kinetic energy from the storms falls two orders of magnitude short of the required driving energy. Although our models may oversimplify the true complexity of the coupling between Jovian storms and global oscillations, our findings reveal that enough thermal energy is associated with moist convection to drive the modes, should it be available to them.

The solar meridional flow is a crucial ingredient in modern dynamo theory. Seismic estimates of this flow have, however, been contradictory in deeper layers below about $0.9\,R_\odot$. Results from time-distance helioseismology have so far been obtained using the ray approximation. Here, we perform inversions using the Born approximation. The initial result is similar to the result previously obtained by Jackiewicz et al. (2015) using ray kernels while using the same set of GONG data and the SOLA inversion technique. However, we show that the assumption of uncorrelated measurements used in earlier studies may lead to inversion errors being underestimated by a factor of about two to four. In a second step, refined inversions are performed using the full covariance matrix and a regularization for cross-talk. As the results are found to depend on the threshold used in the singular value decomposition, they were obtained for a medium threshold ($10^{-7}-10^{-5}$, about 50% of the values used) and a threshold lower by a factor of 10 (about 70% of the values used). The result obtained with the medium threshold is again similar to the original, with less latitudinal variation. However, using the lower threshold, the inverted flow in the southern hemisphere shows two or three cells stacked radially depending on the associated radial flows. Both the single-cell and the multi-cell profiles are consistent with the measured travel times. Sequential chromospheric brightenings (SCBs) are often observed in the immediate vicinity of erupting flares and are associated with coronal mass ejections. Since their initial discovery in 2005, there have been several subsequent investigations of SCBs. These studies have used differing detection and analysis techniques, making it difficult to compare results between studies. This work employs the automated detection algorithm of Kirk et al. (Solar Phys. 283, 97, 2013) to extract the physical characteristics of SCBs in 11 flares of varying size and intensity. We demonstrate that the magnetic substructure within the SCB appears to have a significantly smaller area than the corresponding H-alpha emission. We conclude that SCBs originate in the lower corona around 0.1 R_sun above the photosphere, propagate away from the flare center at speeds of 35 - 85 km/s, and have peak photosphere magnetic intensities of 148 +/- 2.9 G. The chromosphere is a complex region that acts as an intermediary between the magnetic flux emergence in the photosphere and the magnetic features seen in the corona. Large eruptions in the chromosphere of flares and filaments are often accompanied by ejections of coronal mass off the sun. Several studies have observed fast-moving progressive trains of compact bright points (called Sequential Chromospheric Brightenings or SCBs) streaming away from chromospheric flares that also produce a coronal mass ejection (CME). In this work, we review studies of SCBs and search for commonalties between them. We place these findings into a larger context with contemporary chromospheric and coronal observations. SCBs are fleeting indicators of the solar atmospheric environment as it existed before their associated eruption. Accurate measurements of deep solar meridional flow are of vital interest for understanding the solar dynamo. In this paper, we validate a recently developed method for obtaining sensitivity functions (kernels) for travel-time measurements to solar interior flows using the Born approximation in spherical geometry, which is expected to be more accurate than the classical ray approximation. Furthermore, we develop a numerical approach to efficiently compute a large number of kernels based on the separability of the eigenfunctions into their horizontal and radial dependence. The validation is performed using a hydrodynamic simulation of linear wave propagation in the Sun, which includes a standard single-cell meridional flow profile. We show that, using the Born approximation, it is possible to accurately model observational quantities relevant for time-distance helioseismology such as the mean power spectrum, disc-averaged cross-covariance functions, and travel times in the presence of a flow field. In order to closely match the model to observations, we show that it is beneficial to use mode frequencies and damping rates which were extracted from the measured power spectrum. Furthermore, the contribution of the radial flow to the total travel time is found to reach 20% of the contribution of the horizontal flow at travel distances over $40^\circ$. Using the Born kernels and a 2D SOLA inversion of travel times, we can recover most features of the input meridional flow profile. The $\kappa$-mechanism has been successful in explaining the origin of observed oscillations of many types of "classical" pulsating variable stars. Here we examine quantitatively if that same process is prominent enough to excite the potential global oscillations within Jupiter, whose energy flux is powered by gravitational collapse rather than nuclear fusion. Additionally, we examine whether external radiative forcing, i.e. starlight, could be a driver for global oscillations in hot Jupiters orbiting various main-sequence stars at defined orbital semimajor axes. Using planetary models generated by the Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA) and nonadiabatic oscillation calculations, we confirm that Jovian oscillations cannot be driven via the $\kappa$-mechanism. However, we do show that in hot Jupiters oscillations can likely be excited via the suppression of radiative cooling due to external radiation given a large enough stellar flux and the absence of a significant oscillatory damping zone within the planet. This trend seems to not be dependent on the planetary mass. Given the potential of ensemble asteroseismology for understanding fundamental properties of large numbers of stars, it is critical to determine the accuracy of the scaling relations on which these measurements are based. From several powerful validation techniques, all indications so far show that stellar radius estimates from the asteroseismic scaling relations are accurate to within a few percent. Eclipsing binary systems hosting at least one star with detectable solar-like oscillations constitute the ideal test objects for validating asteroseismic radius and mass inferences. By combining radial-velocity measurements and photometric time series of eclipses, it is possible to determine the masses and radii of each component of a double-lined spectroscopic binary. We report the results of a four-year radial-velocity survey performed with the \'echelle spectrometer of the Astrophysical Research Consortium's 3.5-m telescope and the APOGEE spectrometer at Apache Point Observatory. We compare the masses and radii of 10 red giants obtained by combining radial velocities and eclipse photometry with the estimates from the asteroseismic scaling relations. We find that the asteroseismic scaling relations overestimate red-giant radii by about 5% on average and masses by about 15% for stars at various stages of red-giant evolution. Systematic overestimation of mass leads to underestimation of stellar age, which can have important implications for ensemble asteroseismology used for Galactic studies. The NASA Kepler spacecraft data revealed a large number of multimode nonradially pulsating gamma Dor and delta Sct variable star candidates. The high precision long time-series photometry makes it possible to study amplitude variations of the frequencies. We summarize recent literature on amplitude and frequency variations in pulsating variables. We are searching for amplitude variability in several dozen faint gamma Doradus or delta Scuti variable-star candidates observed as part of the Kepler Guest Observer program. We apply several methods, including a Matlab-script wavelet analysis developed by J. Jackiewicz, and the wavelet technique of the VSTAR software (http://www.aavso.org/vstar-overview). Here we show results for two stars, KIC 2167444 and KIC 2301163. We discuss the magnitude and timescale of the amplitude variations, and the presence or absence of correlations between amplitude variations for different frequencies of a given star. Amplitude variations may be detectable using Kepler data even for stars with Kepler magnitude >14 with low-amplitude frequencies (around 100 ppm) using only one or a few quarters of long-cadence data. We combine Kepler photometry with ground-based spectra to present a comprehensive dynamical model of the double red giant eclipsing binary KIC 9246715. While the two stars are very similar in mass (M1 = 2.171 [+0.006 / -0.008], M2 = 2.149 [+0.006 / -0.008] Msun) and radius (R1 = 8.37 [+0.03 / -0.07], R2 = 8.30 [+0.04 / -0.03] Rsun), an asteroseismic analysis finds one main set of solar-like oscillations with unusually low-amplitude, wide modes. A second set of oscillations from the other star may exist, but this marginal detection is extremely faint. Because the two stars are nearly twins, KIC 9246715 is a difficult target for a precise test of the asteroseismic scaling relations, which yield M = 2.17 +/- 0.14 Msun and R = 8.26 +/- 0.18 Rsun. Both stars are consistent with the inferred asteroseismic properties, but we suspect the main oscillator is Star 2 because it is less active than Star 1. We find evidence for stellar activity and modest tidal forces acting over the 171-day eccentric orbit, which are likely responsible for the essential lack of solar-like oscillations in one star and weak oscillations in the other. Mixed modes indicate the main oscillating star is on the secondary red clump (a core-He-burning star), and stellar evolution modeling supports this with a coeval history for a pair of red clump stars. The light curves of 2768 stars with effective temperatures and surface gravities placing them near the gamma Doradus/delta Scuti instability region were observed as part of the Kepler Guest Observer program from Cycles 1 through 5. The light curves were analyzed in a uniform manner to search for gamma Doradus, delta Scuti, and hybrid star pulsations. The gamma Doradus, delta Scuti, and hybrid star pulsations extend asteroseismology to stars slightly more massive (1.4 to 2.5 solar masses) than our Sun. We find 207 gamma Doradus, 84 delta Scuti, and 32 hybrid candidate stars. Many of these stars are cooler than the red edge of the gamma Doradus instability strip as determined from ground-based observations made before Kepler. A few of our gamma Doradus candidate stars lie on the hot side of the ground-based gamma Doradus instability strip. The hybrid candidate stars cover the entire region between 6200 K and the blue edge of the ground-based delta Scuti instability strip. None of our candidate stars are hotter than the hot edge of the ground-based delta Scuti instability strip. Our discoveries, coupled with the work of others, shows that Kepler has discovered over 2000 gamma Doradus, delta Scuti, and hybrid star candidates in the 116 square degree Kepler field of view. In our 2013 Astronomical Review article, we discussed the statistics of variability for 633 faint spectral type A-F stars observed by the Kepler spacecraft during Quarters 6-13. We found six stars that showed no variability with amplitude 20 ppm or greater in the range 0.2 to 24.4 cycles/day, but whose positions in the log g--Teff diagram place them in the delta Sct or gamma Dor pulsation instability regions established from pre-Kepler ground-based observations. Here we present results for 2137 additional stars observed during Quarters 14-17, and find 34 stars that lie within the instability regions. In Paper I, we included a +229 K offset to the Kepler Input Catalog Teff to take into account an average systematic difference between the KIC values and the Teff derived from SDSS color photometry for main-sequence F stars (Pinsonneault et al. 2012). Here we compare the KIC Teff value and the Teff derived from spectroscopy taken by the LAMOST instrument (Molenda-Zakowicz et al. 2013, 2014) for 54 stars common to both samples. We find no trend to support applying the offset, but instead find that a small average temperature decrease relative to the KIC Teff may be more appropriate for the stars in our spectral-type range. If the offset is omitted, only 17 of our 34 `constant' stars fall within the instability regions. For the two `constant' stars also observed by LAMOST, the LAMOST Teff values are cooler than the KIC Teff by several hundred K, and would move these stars out of the instability regions. It is possible that a more accurate determination of their Teff and log g would move some of the other `constant' stars out of the instability regions. However, if average (random) errors in Teff are taken into account, 15 to 52 stars may still persist within the instability regions. Chromospheric flare ribbons observed in H-alpha appear well-organized when first examined: ribbons impulsively brighten, morphologically evolve, and exponentially decay back to pre-flare levels. Upon closer inspection of H-alpha flares, there is often a significant number of compact areas brightening in concert with the flare eruption but are spatially separated from the evolving flare ribbon. One class of these brightenings is known as sequential chromospheric brightenings (SCBs). SCBs are often observed in the intimidate vicinity of erupting flares and are associated with coronal mass ejections. In the past decade there have been several previous investigations of SCBs. These studies have exclusively relied upon H-alphaimages to discover and analyze these ephemeral brightenings. This work employs the automated detection algorithm of Kirk et al. (2011) to extract the physical qualities of SCBs in observations of ground-based H-alpha images and complementary AIA images in HeII, Civ, and 1700 \AA. The meta-data produced in this tracking process are then culled using complementary Doppler velocities to isolate three distinguishable types of SCBs. From a statistical analysis, we find that the SCBs at the chromospheric H-alpha layer appear earlier, and last longer than their corresponding signatures measured in AIA. From this multi-layer analysis, we infer that SCBs are spatially constrained to the mid-chromosphere. Seismology applied to giant planets could drastically change our understanding of their deep interiors, as it has happened with the Earth, the Sun, and many main-sequence and evolved stars. The study of giant planets' composition is important for understanding both the mechanisms enabling their formation and the origins of planetary systems, in particular our own. Unfortunately, its determination is complicated by the fact that their interior is thought not to be homogeneous, so that spectroscopic determinations of atmospheric abundances are probably not representative of the planet as a whole. Instead, the determination of their composition and structure must rely on indirect measurements and interior models. Giant planets are mostly fluid and convective, which makes their seismology much closer to that of solar-like stars than that of terrestrial planets. Hence, helioseismology techniques naturally transfer to giant planets. In addition, two alternative methods can be used: photometry of the solar light reflected by planetary atmospheres, and ring seismology in the specific case of Saturn. The current decade has been promising thanks to the detection of Jupiter's acoustic oscillations with the ground-based imaging-spectrometer SYMPA and indirect detection of Saturn's f-modes in its rings by the NASA Cassini orbiter. This has motivated new projects of ground-based and space-borne instruments that are under development. We study the transport properties of a Fermi gas with strong attractive interactions close to the unitary limit. In particular, we compute the spin diffusion lifetime of the Fermi gas due to superfluid fluctuations above the BCS transition temperature $T_c$. To calculate the spin diffusion lifetime we need the scattering amplitudes. The scattering amplitudes are dominated by the superfluid fluctuations at temperatures just above $T_c$. The normal scattering amplitudes are calculated from the Landau parameters. These Landau parameters are obtained from the local version of the induced interaction model for computing Landau parameters. We also calculate the leading order finite temperature correction to the diffusion lifetime. A calculation of the spin diffusion coefficient is presented in the end. Upon choosing a proper value of $F_0^a$, we are able to present a good match between the theoretical result and the experimental measurement which indicates the presence of the superfluid fluctuations near $T_c$., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Large-scale plasma flows in the Sun's convection zone likely play a major role in solar dynamics on decadal timescales. In particular, quantifying meridional motions is a critical ingredient for understanding the solar cycle and the transport of magnetic flux. Because the signal of such features can be quite small in deep solar layers and be buried in systematics or noise, the true meridional velocity profile has remained elusive. We perform time-distance helioseismology measurements on several years worth of GONG Doppler data. A spherical harmonic decomposition technique is applied to a subset of acoustic modes to measure travel-time differences to try to obtain signatures of meridional flows throughout the solar convection zone. Center-to-limb systematics are taken into account in an intuitive, yet ad hoc manner. Travel-time differences near the surface that are consistent with a poleward flow in each hemisphere and are similar to previous work are measured. Additionally, measurements in deep layers near the base of the convection zone suggest a possible equatorward flow, as well as partial evidence of a sign change in the travel-time differences at mid-convection zone depths. This analysis on an independent data set using different measurement techniques strengthens recent conclusions that the convection zone may have multiple "cells" of meridional flow. The results may challenge the common understanding of one large conveyor belt operating in the solar convection zone. Further work with helioseismic inversions and a careful study of systematic effects are needed before firm conclusions of these large-scale flow structures can be made.

Among 19 red-giant stars belonging to eclipsing binary systems that have been identified in Kepler data, 15 display solar-like oscillations. We study whether the absence of mode detection in the remaining 4 is an observational bias or possibly evidence of mode damping that originates from tidal interactions. A careful analysis of the corresponding Kepler light curves shows that modes with amplitudes that are usually observed in red giants would have been detected if they were present. We observe that mode depletion is strongly associated with short-period systems, in which stellar radii account for 16-24 % of the semi-major axis, and where red-giant surface activity is detected. We suggest that when the rotational and orbital periods synchronize in close binaries, the red-giant component is spun up, so that a dynamo mechanism starts and generates a magnetic field, leading to observable stellar activity. Red-giant stars are an incredible source of information for testing models of stellar evolution, as asteroseismology has opened up a window into their interiors. Such insights are a direct result of the unprecedented data from space missions Kepler and CoRoT as well as recent theoretical advances. Eclipsing binaries are also fundamental astrophysical objects, and when coupled with asteroseismology, binaries would provide two independent methods to obtain masses and radii and exciting opportunities to develop highly constrained stellar models. The possibility of discovering pulsating red giants in eclipsing binary systems is therefore an important goal that could potentially offer very robust characterization of these systems. Hitherto, only 1 case has been discovered with Kepler. We cross-correlated the detected red-giant and eclipsing-binary catalogs from Kepler data to find candidate systems. Light-curve modeling and mean asteroseismic properties are combined to yield measurements of periods, masses, radii, temperatures, eclipse timing variations, core rotation rates, and red-giant evolutionary state. After elimination of false positives, out of the 70 systems common to the red-giant and eclipsing-binary catalogs we find 13 new strong candidates that are pulsating red giants in eclipsing binaries, and 10 more that are pulsating red giants in hierarchical triple systems. The systems span a range of orbital eccentricities, periods, and spectral types for the red-giant companion. One case even suggests a system composed of two red-giants. We make a comparison between small scale chromospheric brightenings and energy release processes through examining the temporal evolution of sequential chromospheric brightenings (SCBs), derive propagation velocities, and propose a connection of the small-scale features to solar flares. Our automated routine detects and distinguishes three separate types of brightening regularly observed in the chromosphere: plage, flare ribbon, and point brightenings. By studying their distinct dynamics, we separate out the flare-associated bright points commonly known as SCBs and identify a propagating Moreton wave. Superimposing our detections on complementary off-band images, we extract a Doppler velocity measurement beneath the point brightening locations. Using these dynamic measurements, we put forward a connection between point brightenings, the erupting flare, and overarching magnetic loops. We report on the physical properties of solar sequential chromospheric brightenings (SCBs) observed in conjunction with moderate-sized chromospheric flares with associated CMEs. To characterize these ephemeral events, we developed automated procedures to identify and track subsections (kernels) of solar flares and associated SCBs using high resolution H-alpha images. Following the algorithmic identification and a statistical analysis, we compare and find the following: SCBs are distinctly different from flare kernels in their temporal characteristics of intensity, Doppler structure, duration, and location properties. We demonstrate that flare ribbons are themselves made up of subsections exhibiting differing characteristics. Flare kernels are measured to have a mean propagation speed of 0.2 km/s and a maximum speed of 2.3 km/s over a mean distance of 5 x 10^3 km. Within the studied population of SCBs, different classes of characteristics are observed with coincident negative, positive, or both negative and positive Doppler shifts of a few km/s. The appearance of SCBs precede peak flare intensity by ~12 minutes and decay ~1 hour later. They are also found to propagate laterally away from flare center in clusters at 41 km/s or 89 km/s. Given SCBs distinctive nature compared to flares, we suggest a different physical mechanism relating to their origin than the associated flare. The light curves of 252 B-star candidates in the Kepler data base are analyzed in a similar fashion to that done by Balona et al. (2011) to further characterize B star variability, increase the sample of variable B stars for future study, and to identify stars whose power spectra include particularly interesting features such as frequency groupings. Stars are classified as either constant light emitters, $\beta$ Cep stars, slowly pulsating B stars, hybrid pulsators, binaries or stars whose light curves are dominated by rotation (Bin/Rot), hot subdwarfs, or white dwarfs. One-hundred stars in our sample were found to be either light contants or to be variable at a level of less than 0.02 mmag. We increase the number of candidate B-star variables found in the Kepler data base by Balona et al. (2011) in the following fashion: $\beta$ Cep stars from 0 to 10, slowly pulsating B stars from 8 to 54, hybrid pulsators from 7 to 21, and Bin/Rot stars from 23 to 82. For comparison purposes, approximately 51 SPBs and 6 hybrids had been known prior to 2007. The number of $\beta$ Cep stars known prior to 2004 was 93. A secondary result of this study is the identification of an additional 11 pulsating white dwarf candidates, four of which possess frequency groupings., Comment: Accepted to Astronomical Journal

Based on the results obtained in a previous paper (S. Gaudio et al., cond-mat/0505309}, we derive the thermodynamic properties of a Fermi gas, deep into the quantum degenerate regime. We show that, if Luttinger's theorem holds, a first order phase transition occurs in the normal phase as a function of the interaction strength, U. We also show that a volume change occurs at finite temperatures from the BEC to the BCS side of a diverging s-wave scattering length, in the normal phase. The transition has an end point above the BCS critical temperature. Also we show that a paramagnetic system in equilibrium, close to the divergence of the scattering length, on the negative side, screens out any applied magnetic field., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We study the nuclear relaxation rate 1/T1 as a function of temperature for a superconducting-ferromagnetic coexistent system using a p-wave triplet model for the superconducting pairing symmetry. This calculation is contrasted with a singlet s-wave one done previously, and we see for the s-wave case that there is a Hebel-Slichter peak, albeit reduced due to the magnetization, and no peak for the p-wave case. We then compare these results to a nuclear relaxation rate experiment on UGe2 to determine the possible pairing symmetry signatures in that material. It is seen that the experimental data is inconclusive to rule out the possibility of s-wave pairing in $UGe_{2}$., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We suggest that the exchange fluctuations close to a Feshbach resonance in a two-component Fermi gas can result in an effective p-wave attractive interaction. On the BCS side of a Feshbach resonance, the magnitude of this effective interaction is comparable to the s-wave interaction, therefore leading to a possible spin-triplet superfluid in the range of temperatures of actual experiments. We also show that the particle-hole exchange fluctuations introduce an effective scattering length which does not diverge, as the standard mean-field one does. In a local Fermi liquid (LFL), we show that there is a line of weak first order phase transitions between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases due to purely quantum fluctuations. We predict that an instability towards superconductivity is only possible in the ferromagnetic state. At T=0 we find a point on the phase diagram where all three phases meet and we call this a quantum triple point (QTP). A simple application of the Gibbs phase rule shows that only these three phases can meet at the QTP. This provides a natural explanation of the absence of superconductivity at this point coming from the paramagnetic side of the phase diagram, as observed in the recently discovered ferromagnetic superconductor, $UGe_{2}$., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We explore various temperature dependencies and thermodynamic quantities of a mean field model of a ferromagnetic-superconducting system. The starting point for this model is based on an s-wave pairing scheme in the singlet channel of the superconducting state and a spontaneously broken symmetry phase in the ferromagnetic state. We show numerically and analytically that a state of coexistence reveals itself and is favored energetically over other possible states, and a simple phase diagram is developed.
