Abstract: Background: Trial recruitment of Black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) is key for interventions that interact with socioeconomic factors and cultural norms, preferences, and values. We report on our experience enrolling BIPOC participants into a multicenter trial of a shared decision-making intervention about anticoagulation to prevent strokes, in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Methods: We enrolled patients with AF and their clinicians in 5 healthcare systems (three academic medical centers, an urban/suburban community medical center, and a safety-net inner-city medical center) located in three states (Minnesota, Alabama, and Mississippi) in the United States. Clinical encounters were randomized to usual care with or without a shared decision-making tool about anticoagulation. Analysis: We analyzed BIPOC patient enrollment by site, categorized reasons for non-enrollment, and examined how enrollment of BIPOC patients was promoted across sites. Results: Of 2247 patients assessed, 922 were enrolled of which 147 (16%) were BIPOC patients. Eligible Black participants were significantly less likely (p < .001) to enroll (102, 11%) than trial-eligible White participants (185, 15%). The enrollment rate of BIPOC patients varied by site. The inclusion and prioritization of clinical practices that care for more BIPOC patients contributed to a higher enrollment rate into the trial. Specific efforts to reach BIPOC clinic attendees and prioritize their enrollment had lower yield. Conclusions: Best practices to optimize the enrollment of BIPOC participants into trials that examined complex and culturally sensitive interventions remain to be developed. This study suggests a high yield from enrolling BIPOC patients from practices that prioritize their care.

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic (and its aftermath) highlights a critical need to communicate health information effectively to the global public. Given that subtle differences in information framing can have meaningful effects on behavior, behavioral science research highlights a pressing question: Is it more effective to frame COVID-19 health messages in terms of potential losses (e.g., “If you do not practice these steps, you can endanger yourself and others”) or potential gains (e.g., “If you practice these steps, you can protect yourself and others”)? Collecting data in 48 languages from 15,929 participants in 84 countries, we experimentally tested the effects of message framing on COVID-19-related judgments, intentions, and feelings. Loss- (vs. gain-) framed messages increased self-reported anxiety among participants cross-nationally with little-to-no impact on policy attitudes, behavioral intentions, or information seeking relevant to pandemic risks. These results were consistent across 84 countries, three variations of the message framing wording, and 560 data processing and analytic choices. Thus, results provide an empirical answer to a global communication question and highlight the emotional toll of loss-framed messages. Critically, this work demonstrates the importance of considering unintended affective consequences when evaluating nudge-style interventions.

5. Nitric oxide and TNF-[alpha] trigger colonic inflammation and carcinogenesis in Helicobacter hepaticus-infected, Rag2-deficient mice

Abstract: Recombinase-activating gene-2-deficient ([Rag2.sup.-/-]) mice lacking functional lymphocytes provide a useful model of chronic inflammatory bowel disease-emulating events in human colon cancer. Infection of [Rag2.sup.-/-] mice with Helicobacter hepaticus led to accumulation of macrophages and neutrophils in the colon, a process temporally related to up-regulation of tissue inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression at the site of infection and increased nitric oxide (NO) production, as evidenced by urinary excretion of nitrate. Progressive development of increasingly severe inflammation, hyperplasia, dysplasia, and cancer accompanied these changes. Concurrent administration of an iNOS inhibitor prevented NO production and abrogated epithelial pathology and inhibited the onset of cancer. The presence of [Gr-1.sup.+] neutrophils and elevated tumor necrosis factor-[alpha] (TNF-[alpha]) expression in colon were required for increased iNOS expression and cancer, whereas interleukin-10 (IL-10) down-regulated TNF-[alpha] and iNOS expression and suppressed cancer. Anti-inflammatory [CD4.sup.+] regulatory lymphocytes also down-regulated iNOS and reduced cancer formation. Collectively, these results confirm essential roles for inflammation, increased TNF-[alpha] expression, and elevated NO production in colon carcinogenesis. colorectal cancer | IBD | innate immunity

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion-regulation strategy that modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries and regions (n = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vesus both control conditions) consistently reduced negative emotions and increased positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing interventions had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. The findings demonstrate the viability of creating scalable, low-cost interventions for use around the world. Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion-regulation strategy that modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries and regions (n = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vesus both control conditions) consistently reduced negative emotions and increased positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing interventions had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. The findings demonstrate the viability of creating scalable, low-cost interventions for use around the world.

The use of static capacitors to achieve significant improvement in energy conservation in some industries in Kumasi has been studied. Abstract: A direct transfer technique which allows samples of airborne dust collected on membrane filters (Millipore MF-series) to be transferred to TEM grids for estimation of asbestos content is described. The technique has been shown by direct observation to give quantitative transfer with no apparent fibre breakage. It has also been demonstrated that the overall procedure for estimation of fibre mass on the filter gives acceptable accuracy for analysis of standard samples. Abstract: This paper finds the reliability of the average of examination marks, calculated to two decimal places, as a criterion for the ranking and classification of students. The marks are in percentages, and the paper examines the importance of a difference of one point in the unit, the first or the second decimal place. It is seen from the reliability in marking, even the mathematical courses, that the probability of obtaining a re-liable percentage average calculated to one or two decimal places is very low . Thus it is only fair to limit the average marks calculated only up to the units.

Abstract: The purpose of this report is to determine the comparative costs of packing apples in modern North Carolina plants for a range of output capacities, lengths of season and technologies. Information on investment and operating costs was obtained from packinghouse operators, equipment manufacturers and published research reports. These data are used to derive fixed and variable costs per unit of output for the different plants. Building, equipment for either manual or mechanical dwnping systems, and operating costs are determined for packinghouses with hourly output capacities of 100, 200, 300, 400, 600 and 800 boxes of 40 pounds each. Total season costs are provided for the 200- and 400-box capacities for 300- and 400-hour seasons to illustrate length of season effects and procedure. Results of the study indicate that output increased 100 percent by increasing capacity from 200 tp 400 boxes/hour, with a 50 percent increase in capital investment. Annual costs per box decrease $ .09 when capacity is increased from 200 to 400 boxes per hour for a 300-hour season and $ .06 when length of season is increased from 300 to 400 hours for the 400-box plant. The cost decrease when both length of season and size of plant are increased is $ .15 per box. This information should benefit the N. C. packing industry as it considers future organization of resources for the purpose of maintaining or increasing its competitive position.

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion-regulation strategy that modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries and regions (n = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vesus both control conditions) consistently reduced negative emotions and increased positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing interventions had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. The findings demonstrate the viability of creating scalable, low-cost interventions for use around the world.

Abstract: The presence of non-hexagonal rings in the honeycomb carbon arrangement of graphene produces rippled graphene layers with valuable chemical and physical properties. In principle, a bottom-up approach to introducing distortion from planarity of a graphene sheet can be achieved by careful insertion of curved polyaromatic hydrocarbons during the growth of the lattice. Corannulene, the archetype of such non-planar polyaromatic hydrocarbons, can act as an ideal wrinkling motif in 2D carbon nanostructures. Herein we report an electrochemical bottom-up method to obtain egg-box shaped nanographene structures through a polycondensation of corannulene that produces a new conducting layered material. Characterization of this new polymeric material by electrochemistry, spectroscopy, electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), scanning probe microscopy, and laser desorption-ionization time of flight mass spectrometry provides strong evidence that the anodic polymerization of corannulene, combined with electrochemically induced oxidative cyclodehydrogenations (Scholl reactions), leads to polycorannulene with a wavy graphene-like structure., A bottom-up synthesis of wavy graphene structures obtained through an anodic polymerization process, combined with an electrochemically triggered oxidative cyclodehydrogenation, of the bowl-shaped polyaromatic hydrocarbon corannulene.

Abstract: Electrochemiluminescence of corannulene in acetonitrile by the use of coreactants is reported here for the first time. The investigation has been carried out utilizing both benzoyl peroxide as a sacrificial coreactant and arylamine derivatives as nonsacrificial species to perform mixed-annihilation processes. The electrochemiluminescence produces an intense blue light. The use of different tris(arylamines) as mixed-annihilation coreactants gives rise to exciplexes with corannulene that emit at different wavelengths, thus allowing the emission color to be tuned by changing the coreactant molecule. This opens a potential pathway to exploitation of such an intriguing carbon structure for building efficient blue-light emitting devices.

Abstract: The voltammetric generation of corannulene anions was investigated over a large range of experimental conditions comprising either "traditional" electrochemical solvents, such as dimethylformamide, acetonitrile, and tetrahydrofuran, or "unconventional" solvents, such as liquid ammonia, liquid methylamine, or liquid dimethylamine, and several different supporting electrolytes. Strong ion pairing effects were found to dominate the electrochemical generation of corannulene higher anions, and through the suitable choice of the solvent/electrolyte system, we observed, for the first time, the reversible electrochemical generation of up to the triply reduced corannulene. The standard potentials obtained experimentally compared rather well with the theoretical values calculated by ab initio and density functional methods, in which solvation and ion pairing effect were explicitly taken into account. In particular, the calculations considered the effect of the electrolyte cation size on ion pairing in order to rationalize the occurrence of the third reduction within the experimental potential window.
