A high quantity of waste is generated from industrial activities by manufacturers across metropolitan cities compared to smaller cities with fewer industrial activities. Adopting Circular Economy principles in waste management has the potential for sustainable waste management to reduce the quantity of waste at dumpsites and harmful emissions from wastes. The study was conducted to assess circularity status and challenges for attaining higher circularity by Kigali’s manufacturing, waste collection, and waste recycling companies using the 10-R framework. The study also sought to build estimates for industrial solid waste quantity and methane emissions for the next 10 years (2020–2030) in Rwanda. A mixed method approach was utilized where primary data was collected from manufacturing, waste collection, and waste recycling companies using a validated questionnaire and an in-depth interview guide. Thematic, descriptive analysis and First Order Decay methods were used to analyze the qualitative, quantitative, and secondary data. Results show that adopting the 10-R principles of circular economy was low and varies across manufacturing, waste collection and recycling companies. There were instances of high adoption of R3-Reuse and R8-Recycle with a mean score of 7.17 and 7.21 among manufacturing companies. R7-Repurpose (8.80) recorded a high adoption rate among waste collection companies and a medium level of adoption for R7-Repurpose (3.50) and R9-Recover (3.00) among recycling companies. The overall low adoption toward attaining circularity was attributed to various economic, institutional, infrastructural, operational, attitudinal, and technological challenges. In 2030, it is projected that 922 Gg of industrial waste will be deposited in solid waste disposal sites in Rwanda; with an estimated methane emission of 157 Gg Carbon dioxide equivalence. It was recommended among others, that human resource capacity development should be prioritized to drive the adoption of the 10-R principles across manufacturing, waste collection, and waste recycling companies in Kigali, which can reduce the quantity of wastes that ends at dumpsites and methane emissions that contribute significantly to global warming.

Despite the rise of plastic waste regulation and rising trends in the adoption of circular economy (CE) policies globally, investigations of their impact on businesses remain limited. Research on adoption of CE policies in Africa is particularly limited despite African countries leading the uptake of plastic ban laws and CE-related policies. This paper examines how the 10-R principles of CE feature in Rwanda's sustainability policies, and provides the experiences of Rwandan manufacturers following the implementation of the plastic ban. A qualitative review of key environmental sustainability policies in Rwanda shows alignment to different levels of 10-R principles of the circular economy. Meanwhile, field interviews with leading manufacturers comprising producers and users of single-use plastics in Rwanda indicate that businesses have faced internal and external challenges complying with the plastic ban and CE-related policies. These challenges range from limited capital to acquire new industrial technology, lack of expertise to develop circular business models, lack of alternative packaging to plastics, to loss in market competition since Rwanda's competitors in the international market still use cheap plastic packaging. Consequently, our findings indicate that insufficient government support such as lack of finance and capacity development to develop new business models, ambiguous regulatory framework, and inadequate stakeholder consultations impedes business uptake of CE and other sustainability policies. In addition to providing policy and managerial implications, we conclude by underscoring the importance of continued collaboration between government in terms of regulation, innovation from businesses, and consumer actions, in tackling environmental challenges caused by plastic waste and implementation of CE and other green policies.

Accurate classification of cancer plays an important role for cancer treatment. The advancement of microarray technologies improves the accuracy of cancer diagnosis. Recently, scientists identify more informative genes from thousands of genes for accurate cancer detection. In this paper, Genetic Algorithm (GA) with bagging is developed for DeoxyriboNucleic Acid (DNA) classification. To remove the noise and data integrity, GA is applied to find the informative genes from the microarray data. It uses Backward Selection (BS), Forward Selection (FS) and Branch and Bound Selection (BBS) algorithms to select the sub-set of genes. Then bagging is employed to classify the selected genes to normal or abnormal. The evaluation of DNA classification system is performed on five cancers; colon, Central Nervous System (CNS), ovarian, leukemia and breast. Results show that the accuracy of GA-BBS with bagging algorithm is better than GA-BS and GA-FS with bagging. For all datasets, GA-BBS with bagging provides no misclassification and gives the highest performance (100%) in terms of sensitivity, accuracy and specificity. Based on results, it is concluded that ‘best’ prediction system is GA-BBS with bagging classifier.

Mercury (Hg) concentrations and their associated toxicological effects in terrestrial ecosystems of the Gulf of Mexico are largely unknown. Compounding this uncertainty, a large input of organic matter from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill may have altered Hg cycling and bioaccumulation dynamics. To test this idea, we quantified blood concentrations of total mercury (THg) in Seaside Sparrows (Ammospiza maritima) and Marsh Rice Rats (Oryzomys palustris) in marshes west and east of the Mississippi River in 2015 and 2016. We also tested for a difference in THg concentrations between oiled and non-oiled sites. To address the potential confounding effect of diet variation on Hg transfer, we used stable nitrogen (δ 15 N) and carbon (δ 13 C) isotope values as proxies of trophic position and the source of primary production, respectively. Our results revealed that five to six years after the spill, THg concentrations were not higher in sites oiled by the spill compared to non-oiled sites. In both species, THg was higher at sites east of the Mississippi River compared to control and oiled sites, located west. In Seaside Sparrows but not in Marsh Rice Rats, THg increased with δ 15 N values, suggesting Hg trophic biomagnification. Overall, even in sites with the most elevated THg, concentrations were generally low. In Seaside Sparrows, THg concentrations were also lower than previously reported in this and other closely related passerines, with only 7% of tested birds exceeding the lowest observed effect concentration associated with toxic effects across bird species (0.2 µg/g ww). Due to global climate change resulting in extreme temperature fluctuations, it becomes increasingly necessary to explore the natural genetic variation in model crops such as rice to facilitate the breeding of climate-resilient cultivars. To uncover genomic regions in rice involved in managing cold stress tolerance responses and to identify associated cold tolerance genes, two inbred line populations developed from crosses between cold-tolerant and cold-sensitive parents were used for quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping of two traits: degree of membrane damage after 1 week of cold exposure quantified as percent electrolyte leakage (EL) and percent low-temperature seedling survivability (LTSS) after 1 week of recovery growth. This revealed four EL QTL and 12 LTSS QTL, all overlapping with larger QTL regions previously uncovered by genome-wide association study (GWAS) mapping approaches. Within the QTL regions, 25 cold-tolerant candidate genes were identified based on genomic differences between the cold-tolerant and cold-sensitive parents. Of those genes, 20% coded for receptor-like kinases potentially involved in signal transduction of cold tolerance responses; 16% coded for transcription factors or factors potentially involved in regulating cold tolerance response effector genes; and 64% coded for protein chaperons or enzymes potentially serving as cold tolerance effector proteins. The pigmented flavonoids, anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins, have health promoting properties. Previous work determined that the genes Pb and Rc turn on and off the biosynthesis of anthocyanins (purple) and proanthocyanidins (red), respectively. Not yet known is how the concentrations of these pigmented flavonoids are regulated in grain pericarps. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis in a population of rice (Oryza sativa L.) F5 recombinant inbred lines from white pericarp "IR36ae" x red+purple pericarp "242" revealed three QTLs associated with grain concentrations of anthocyanins (TAC) or proanthocyanidins (PA). Both TAC and PA independently mapped to a 1.5 Mb QTL region on chromosome 3 between RM3400 (at 15.8 Mb) and RM15123 (17.3 Mb), named qPR3. Across 2 years, qPR3 explained 36.3% of variance in TAC and 35.8% in PA variance not attributable to Pb or Rc. The qPR3 region encompasses Kala3, a MYB transcription factor previously known to regulate purple grain characteristics. Study of PbPbRcrc progeny showed that TAC of RcRc near isogenic lines (NILs) was 2.1-4.5x that of rcrc. Similarly, study of PbPbRcRc NILs, which had 70% higher PA than pbpbRcRc NILs, revealed a mutual enhancement, not a trade-off between these compounds that share precursors. This suggests that Pb and Rc upregulate genes in a shared pathway as they activate TAC and PA synthesis, respectively. This study provides molecular markers for facilitating marker-assisted selection of qPR3, qPR5, and qPR7 to enhance grain concentrations of pigmented flavonoids and documented that stacking Rc and Pb genes further increases both flavonoid compounds., (Published 2023. Background: Sheath blight (ShB) disease caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kühn, is one of the most economically damaging rice (Oryza sativa L.) diseases worldwide. There are no known major resistance genes, leaving only partial resistance from small-effect QTL to deploy for cultivar improvement. Many ShB-QTL are associated with plant architectural traits detrimental to yield, including tall plants, late maturity, or open canopy from few or procumbent tillers, which confound detection of physiological resistance., Results: To identify QTL for ShB resistance, 417 accessions from the Rice Diversity Panel 1 (RDP1), developed for association mapping studies, were evaluated for ShB resistance, plant height and days to heading in inoculated field plots in Arkansas, USA (AR) and Nanning, China (NC). Inoculated greenhouse-grown plants were used to evaluate ShB using a seedling-stage method to eliminate effects from height or maturity, and tiller (TN) and panicle number (PN) per plant. Potted plants were used to evaluate the RDP1 for TN and PN. Genome-wide association (GWA) mapping with over 3.4 million SNPs identified 21 targeted SNP markers associated with ShB which tagged 18 ShB-QTL not associated with undesirable plant architecture traits. Ten SNPs were associated with ShB among accessions of the Indica subspecies, ten among Japonica subspecies accessions, and one among all RDP1 accessions. Across the 18 ShB QTL, only qShB4-1 was not previously reported in biparental mapping studies and qShB9 was not reported in the GWA ShB studies. All 14 PN QTL overlapped with TN QTL, with 15 total TN QTL identified. Allele effects at the five TN QTL co-located with ShB QTL indicated that increased TN does not inevitably increase disease development; in fact, for four ShB QTL that overlapped TN QTL, the alleles increasing resistance were associated with increased TN and PN, suggesting a desirable coupling of alleles at linked genes., Conclusions: Nineteen accessions identified as containing the most SNP alleles associated with ShB resistance for each subpopulation were resistant in both AR and NC field trials. There is global concern that rice grains and foods can contain harmful amounts of arsenic (As), motivating breeders to produce cultivars that restrict As accumulation in grains to protect human health. Arsenic is also toxic to plants, with straighthead disorder (StHD), causing panicle sterility, being observed in rice. The genetic variation in StHD resistance suggests that plants have evolved mechanisms that reduce As toxicity, possibly via regulation of As uptake, transport, or detoxification/sequestration. Because these mechanisms could also underlie the wide (3- to 100-fold) differences in grain As concentration (grain-As) observed among diverse rice genotypes, it was hypothesized that some genes reduce both grain-As content and StHD susceptibility and may be detectable as co-located StDH and As quantitative trait loci (QTL). We used a machine-learning Bayesian network approach plus high-resolution genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify QTL for grain-As and StHD resistance within the USDA Rice Minicore Collection (RMC). Arsenic enters roots through phosphorus (P) and silica (Si) transporters, As detoxification involves sulfur (S), and cell signaling to activate stress tolerance mechanisms is impacted by Si, calcium (Ca), and copper (Cu). Therefore, concentrations of Si, P, S, Ca, and Cu were included in this study to elucidate physiological mechanisms underlying grain-As and StHD QTL. Multiple QTL (from 9 to 33) were identified for each of the investigated As-associated traits. Although the QTL for StHD, Si, and grain-As did not overlap as heavily as our hypothesis predicted (4/33 StHD and 4/15 As QTL co-located), they do provide useful guidance to future research. Furthermore, these are the first StHD and Si QTL to be identified using high-density mapping, resulting in their being mapped to shorter, more precise genomic regions than previously reported QTL. The candidate genes identified provide guidance for future research, such as gene editing or mutation studies to further investigate the role of antioxidants and ROS scavenging to StHD resistance, as indicated by candidate genes around the commonly reported qStHD8-2 QTL. Cross-ecosystem subsidies move substantial amounts of nutrients between ecosystems. Emergent aquatic insects are a particularly important prey source for riparian songbirds but may also move aquatic contaminants, such as mercury (Hg), to riparian food webs. While many studies focus on species that eat primarily emergent aquatic insects, we instead study riparian songbirds with flexible foraging strategies, exploiting both aquatic and terrestrial prey sources. The goal in this study is to trace reliance on aquatic prey sources and correlate it to Hg concentrations in common riparian arachnids (Families Tetragnathidae, Opiliones, and Salticidae) and songbirds (Common Yellowthroat Geothlypis trichas , Spotted Towhee Pipilo maculatus , Swainson's Thrush Catharus ustulatus , Song Sparrow Melospiza melodia , and Yellow Warbler Setophaga petechia ). We used stable isotopes of δ 13 C and δ 15 N and Bayesian mixing models in MixSIAR to determine the reliance of riparian predators on aquatic prey sources. Using mixed effects models, we found that arachnid families varied in their reliance on aquatic prey sources. While songbird species varied in their reliance on aquatic prey sources, songbirds sampled earlier in the season consistently relied more on aquatic prey sources than those sampled later in the season. For both arachnids and songbirds, we found a positive correlation between the amount of the aquatic prey source in their diet and their Hg concentrations. While the seasonal pulse of aquatic prey to terrestrial ecosystems is an important source of nutrients to riparian species, our results show that aquatic prey sources are linked with higher Hg exposure. Study Objective: Reporting systems are designed to identify patient care issues so changes can be made to improve safety. However, a culture of blame discourages event reporting, and reporting seen as punitive can inhibit individual and system performance in patient safety. This study aimed to determine the frequency and factors related to punitive patient safety event report submissions, referred to as Patient Safety Net reports, or PSNs., Methods: Three subject matter experts reviewed 513 PSNs submitted between January and June 2019. If the PSN was perceived as blaming an individual, it was coded as punitive. The experts had high agreement (κ=0.84 to 0.92), and identified relationships between PSN characteristics and punitive reporting were described., Results: A total of 25% of PSNs were punitive, 7% were unclear, and 68% were designated nonpunitive. Punitive (vs nonpunitive) PSNs more likely focused on communication (41% vs 13%), employee behavior (38% vs 2%), and patient assessment issues (17% vs 4%). Nonpunitive (vs punitive) PSNs were more likely for equipment (19% vs 4%) and patient or family behavior issues (8% vs 2%). Punitive (vs nonpunitive) PSNs were more common with adverse reactions or complications (21% vs 10%), communication failures (25% vs 16%), and noncategorized events (19% vs 8%), and nonpunitive (vs punitive) PSNs were more frequent in falls (5% vs 0%) and radiology or laboratory events (17% vs 7%)., Conclusion: Punitive reports have important implications for reporting systems because they may reflect a culture of blame and a failure to recognize system influences on behaviors. Nonpunitive wording better identifies factors contributing to safety concerns. Purpose: To evaluate the effects of topical castor oil application to the eyelids on ocular surface and tear film parameters in patients with blepharitis., Methods: Twenty-six participants (14 females, 12 males; mean ± SD age, 38 ± 21 years) with clinical signs of blepharitis were enrolled in a prospective, investigator-masked, randomized, paired-eye trial. A 100% cold pressed castor oil formulation (Lotus Garden Botanicals, Biddeford, ME, USA) was applied to the eyelids of one eye (randomized), twice daily for 4 weeks. Ocular surface characteristics, symptoms, and tear film parameters were assessed at baseline and day 28., Results: Baseline measurements did not differ between treated and control eyes (all p > 0.05). A significant reduction in OSDI symptomology score was observed following the four-week treatment period (p = 0.001). Clinical improvements in eyelid margin thickening, telangiectasia, eyelash matting, madarosis, cylindrical dandruff, and lid wiper epitheliopathy were limited to treated eyes (all p < 0.01), while greater decreases in staphylococcal and seborrheic eyelash crusting were observed in treated than control eyes (both p < 0.05). No adverse events were reported during the treatment period., Conclusion: Topical castor oil application effected significant improvements in ocular surface signs and symptoms in patients with blepharitis. Although feathers are commonly used to monitor mercury (Hg) in avian populations, their reliability as a sampling matrix has not been thoroughly assessed for many avian species, including most songbirds (Order Passeriformes). To better understand relationships between total Hg (THg) concentrations in feathers and other tissues for birds in the thrush and sparrow families, we (1) examined variation in THg concentrations among tissues, including feathers from six different tracts, nails, liver, and muscle; (2) tested relationships between THg concentrations in the various feather tracts and those in internal tissues from the same birds, to assess the predictive power of feather THg, and; (3) compared these relationships to those between THg concentrations in nails and internal tissues, to assess the viability of nails as a non-lethal sampling alternative. THg concentrations in all feather tracts and nails were consistently higher than those in the liver and muscle, and THg was higher in the thrushes than the sparrows. When comparing feather tracts, we observed high variation within some individuals, suggesting that estimates of Hg exposure could vary depending on which feather was sampled. Despite this variation, feather type had little effect on the predictive power of feather THg concentrations, which ranged from extremely weak in the sparrows (0.09 ≤ R 2  ≤ 0.16) to moderate (0.29 ≤ R 2  ≤ 0.42) in the thrushes. Alternatively, we found that nail samples better predicted internal tissue THg concentrations in both the thrushes (0.44 ≤ R 2  ≤ 0.48) and sparrows (0.70 ≤ R 2  ≤ 0.78). Nails have been used to monitor Hg in mammals and reptiles, but their reliability as a sampling matrix for monitoring Hg in avian populations has yet to be assessed for most taxa. While nails exhibit stronger relationships to internal tissue THg concentrations, they may not be an effective sampling option for all avian species because the collection of sizable nail samples could harm living birds, particularly small songbirds. However, this method may be reasonable for retrospective museum studies. Overall, our results suggest that, despite their current use in the literature, feathers are not a suitable sampling matrix for Hg monitoring in some songbird species.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a global environmental contaminant that poses significant risks to the health of humans, wildlife, and ecosystems. Assessing MeHg exposure in biota across the landscape and over time is vital for monitoring MeHg pollution and gauging the effectiveness of regulations intended to reduce new mercury (Hg) releases. We used MeHg concentrations measured in museum specimen feathers (collected between 1869 and 2014) and total Hg concentrations (as a proxy for MeHg) of feathers sampled from wild birds (collected between 2008 and 2017) to investigate temporal patterns in exposure over approximately 150 years for North American songbirds. For individual species, we found greater concentrations for samples collected post-2000 compared to those collected during historic times (pre-1900) for six of seven songbird species. Mean feather concentrations measured in samples collected post-2000 ranged between 1.9 and 17 times (mean 6.6) greater than historic specimens. The proportion of individual songbirds with feather concentrations that exceeded modeled toxicity benchmarks increased in samples collected after 1940. Only 2% of individual songbirds collected prior to 1940 had feather concentrations greater than 2.4 μg/g (a toxicity benchmark related to a 10% decrease in nest success) compared to 35% of individuals collected post-1940. Many species included in this study have a vulnerable or near-threatened conservation status, suggesting recovery actions are needed to address mercury pollution.

Mercury (Hg) loading and methylation in aquatic systems causes a variety of deleterious effects for fish and wildlife populations. Relatively little research has focused on Hg movement into riparian food webs and how this is modulated by habitat characteristics. This study characterized differences in Hg exposure in aquatic invertebrates and riparian songbirds across a large portion of the Willamette River system in western Oregon, starting at a Hg-contaminated Superfund site in the headwaters (Black Butte Hg Mine) and including a reservoir known to methylate Hg (Cottage Grove Reservoir), all downstream reaches (Coast Fork and Willamette River) and off-channel wetland complexes (Willamette Valley National Wildlife Refuge Complex). After accounting for year, date, and site differences in a mixed effects model, MeHg concentrations in aquatic invertebrates varied spatially among habitat categories and invertebrate orders. Similarly, THg in songbird blood varied by among habitat categories and bird species. The highest Hg concentrations occurred near the Hg mine, but Hg did not decline linearly with distance from the source of contamination. Birds were consistently elevated in Hg in habitats commonly associated with enhanced MeHg production, such as backwater or wetlands. We found a positive but weak correlation between aquatic invertebrate MeHg concentrations and songbird THg concentrations on a site-specific basis. Our findings suggest that Hg risk to riparian songbirds can extend beyond point-source contaminated areas, highlighting the importance of assessing exposure in surrounding habitats where methylmercury production may be elevated, such as reservoirs and wetlands.

Salt stress is a major constraint to rice acreage and production worldwide. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the natural genetic variation available in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) rice mini-core collection (URMC) for early vigor traits under salt stress and identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for seedling-stage salt tolerance via a genome-wide association study (GWAS). Using a hydroponic system, the seedlings of 162 accessions were subjected to electrical conductivity (EC) 6.0 dS m -1 salt stress at the three-to-four leaf stage. After completion of the study, 59.4% of the accessions were identified as sensitive, 23.9% were identified as moderately tolerant, and 16.7% were identified as highly tolerant. Pokkali was the most tolerant variety, while Nerica-6 was the most sensitive. Adapting standard International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) protocols, eight variables associated with salt tolerance were determined. The GWAS of the URMC, using over three million single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), identified nine genomic regions associated with salt tolerance that were mapped to five different chromosomes. Of these, none were in the known Saltol QTL region, suggesting different probable genes and mechanisms responsible for salt tolerance in the URMC. The study uncovered genetic loci that explained a large portion of the variation in salt tolerance at the seedling stage. Fourteen highly salt-tolerant accessions, six novel loci, and 16 candidate genes in their vicinity were identified that may be useful in breeding for salt stress tolerance. Identified QTLs can be targeted for fine mapping, candidate gene verification, and marker-assisted breeding in future studies.

Timber harvest has many effects on aquatic ecosystems, including changes in hydrological, biogeochemical, and ecological processes that can influence mercury (Hg) cycling. Although timber harvest's influence on aqueous Hg transformation and transport are well studied, the effects on Hg bioaccumulation are not. We evaluated Hg bioaccumulation, biomagnification, and food web structure in 10 paired catchments that were either clear-cut in their entirety, clear-cut except for an 8-m wide riparian buffer, or left unharvested. Average mercury concentrations in aquatic biota from clear-cut catchments were 50% higher than in reference catchments and 165% higher than in catchments with a riparian buffer. Mercury concentrations in aquatic invertebrates and salamanders were not correlated with aqueous THg or MeHg concentrations, but rather treatment effects appeared to correspond with differences in the utilization of terrestrial and aquatic basal resources in the stream food webs. Carbon and nitrogen isotope data suggest that a diminished shredder niche in the clear-cut catchments contributed to lower basal resource diversity compared with the reference of buffered treatments, and that elevated Hg concentrations in the clear-cut catchments reflect an increased reliance on aquatic resources in clear-cut catchments. In contrast, catchments with riparian buffers had higher basal resource diversity than the reference catchments, indicative of more balanced utilization of terrestrial and aquatic resources. Further, following timber harvest THg concentrations in riparian songbirds were elevated, suggesting an influence of timber harvest on Hg export to riparian food webs. These data, coupled with comparisons of individual feeding guilds, indicate that changes in organic matter sources and associated effects on stream food web structure are important mechanisms by which timber harvest modifies Hg bioaccumulation in headwater streams and riparian consumers., (Published by Elsevier Ltd.)

Cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation (c-tDCS) enhances motor adaptation, skill acquisition, and learning in relatively simple motor tasks. The purpose was to examine the influence of c-tDCS on motor learning in a complex overhand throwing task. Forty-two young adults were randomized to a c-tDCS group or a SHAM group and completed a practice session and a retention session. The practice session involved an overhand throwing task to a small target (6 m away) in a pre-test block, 6 practice blocks, a post-test block, and a retention-test block (24 h later). c-tDCS or SHAM was applied during overhand throwing in the practice blocks. The decline in endpoint error was greater for the tDCS group compared to SHAM at the end of practice (P = 0.019) and at retention (P = 0.003). The findings indicate that a single application of c-tDCS enhances motor learning in a complex overhand throwing task.

The Rice Diversity Panel 1 (RDP1) was developed for genome-wide association (GWA) studies to explore five rice ( L.) subpopulations (, , , , and ). The RDP1 was evaluated for over 30 traits, including agronomic, panicle architecture, seed, and disease traits and genotyped with 700,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Most rice grown in the southern United States is and thus the diversity in this subpopulation is interesting to U.S. breeders. Among the RDP1 accessions, 'Estrela' and 'NSFTV199' are both phenotypically and genotypically diverse, thus making them excellent parents for a biparental mapping population. The objectives were to (i) ascertain the GWA QTLs from the RDP1 GWA studies that overlapped with the QTLs uncovered in an Estrela × NSFTV199 recombinant inbred line (RIL) population evaluated for 15 yield traits, and (ii) identify known or novel genes potentially controlling specific yield component traits. The 256 RILs were genotyped with 132 simple sequence repeat markers and 70 QTLs were found. Perl scripts were developed for automatic identification of the underlying candidate genes in the GWA QTL regions. Approximately 100 GWA QTLs overlapped with 41 Estrela × NSFTV199 QTL (RIL QTL) regions and 47 known genes were identified. Two seed trait RIL QTLs with overlapping GWA QTLs were not associated with a known gene. Segregating SNPs in the overlapping GWA QTLs for RIL QTLs with high values will be evaluated as potential DNA markers useful to breeding programs for the associated yield trait., (Copyright © 2019 Crop Science Society of America.)

Rice ( L.) end-use cooking quality is vital for producers and billions of consumers worldwide. Grain quality is a complex trait with interacting genetic and environmental factors. Deciphering the complex genetic architecture associated with grain quality provides essential information for improved breeding strategies to enhance desirable traits that are stable across variable climatic and environmental conditions. In this study, genome-wide association (GWA) analysis of three rice diversity panels, the USDA rice core subset (1364 accessions), the minicore (MC) (173 accessions after removing non-), and the high density rice array-MC (HDMC) (383 accessions), with simple sequence repeats, single nucleotide polymorphic markers, or both, revealed large- and small-effect loci associated with known genes and previously uncharacterized genomic regions. Clustering of the significant regions in the GWA results suggests that multiple grain quality traits are inherited together. The 11 novel candidate loci for grain quality traits and the seven candidates for grain chalk identified are involved in the starch biosynthesis pathway. This study highlights the intricate pleiotropic relationships that exist in complex genotype-phenotypic associations and gives a greater insight into effective breeding strategies for grain quality improvement., (Copyright © 2019 Crop Science Society of America.)

Mercury (Hg) exposure has been extensively studied in aquatic and piscivorous wildlife, but, historically, less attention has been directed towards terrestrial species. However, it has become apparent that aquatic Hg crosses ecosystem boundaries along with beneficial subsidies, thereby entering the terrestrial food chain. It is still not known how far from contaminated waterways Hg exposure remains a risk. We examined the spatial extent of exposure in terrestrial songbirds breeding in the floodplain along a 40-km stretch of Hg-contaminated river in Virginia, USA. Four songbird species were chosen that readily occupied artificial nest cavities placed at known distances from the river; Carolina chickadees (Poecile carolinensis), Carolina wrens (Thryothorus ludovicianus), eastern bluebirds (Sialia sialis), and house wrens (Troglodytes aedon). We examined Hg exposure at varying distances from the edge of the river for three endpoints: 1) adult bird blood, 2) nestling bird feather and 3) spider whole body (collected in pitfall traps and directly from the mouths of nestling birds). We used mixed effects models to understand 1) how total Hg (i.e., inorganic and organic, THg) concentrations differed between contaminated and reference sites and 2) how THg concentrations declined with distance away from the river on contaminated sites. Adult bird blood THg indicated that a species-by-distance interaction was significant, after accounting for site and year. Importantly, despite the decline with distance, we found that THg levels in some songbird species and their invertebrate prey remained elevated above reference levels for up to 400m away from the river. Our results predict a spatial extent of contamination that is an order of magnitude greater than similar studies investigating the lateral impact of other aquatically derived contaminants. To our knowledge, this study is the first to indicate that exposure to legacy aquatic Hg is possible for terrestrial wildlife across the entire floodplain, rather than being confined to narrow riparian corridors., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Mercury (Hg) stable isotope analysis is an emerging technique that has contributed to a better understanding of many aspects of the biogeochemical cycling of Hg in the environment. However, no study has yet evaluated its usefulness in elucidating the sources of methylmercury (MeHg) in songbird species, a common organism for biomonitoring of Hg in forested ecosystems. In the present pilot study, we examined stable mercury isotope ratios in blood of 4 species of songbirds and the invertebrates they are likely foraging on in multiple habitats in a small watershed of mixed forest and wetlands in Acadia National Park in Maine (USA). We found distinct isotopic signatures of MeHg in invertebrates (both mass-dependent fractionation [as δ 202 Hg] and mass-independent fractionation [as Δ 199 Hg]) among 3 interconnected aquatic habitats. It appears that the Hg isotopic compositions in bird blood cannot be fully accounted for by the isotopic compositions of MeHg in lower trophic levels in each of the habitats examined. Furthermore, the bird blood isotope results cannot be simply explained by an isotopic offset as a result of metabolic fractionation of δ 202 Hg (e.g., internal demethylation). Our results suggest that many of the birds sampled obtain MeHg from sources outside the habitat they were captured in. Our findings also indicate that mass-independent fractionation is a more reliable and conservative tracer than mass-dependent fractionation for identifying sources of MeHg in bird blood. The results demonstrate the feasibility of Hg isotope studies of songbirds but suggest that larger numbers of samples and an expanded geographic area of study may be required for conclusive interpretation. Rice ( Oryza sativa L.) is often exposed to cool temperatures during spring planting in temperate climates. A better understanding of genetic pathways regulating chilling tolerance will enable breeders to develop varieties with improved tolerance during germination and young seedling stages. To dissect chilling tolerance, five assays were developed; one assay for the germination stage, one assay for the germination and seedling stage, and three for the seedling stage. Based on these assays, five chilling tolerance indices were calculated and assessed using 202 O. sativa accessions from the Rice Mini-Core (RMC) collection. Significant differences between RMC accessions made the five indices suitable for genome-wide association study (GWAS) based quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping. For young seedling stage indices, japonica and indica subspecies clustered into chilling tolerant and chilling sensitive accessions, respectively, while both subspecies had similar low temperature germinability distributions. Indica subspecies were shown to have chilling acclimation potential. GWAS mapping uncovered 48 QTL at 39 chromosome regions distributed across all 12 rice chromosomes. Interestingly, there was no overlap between the germination and seedling stage QTL. Also, 18 QTL and 32 QTL were in regions discovered in previously reported bi-parental and GWAS based QTL mapping studies, respectively. Two novel low temperature seedling survivability (LTSS)-QTL, qLTSS3-4 and qLTSS4-1 , were not in a previously reported QTL region. QTL with strong effect alleles identified in this study will be useful for marker assisted breeding efforts to improve chilling tolerance in rice cultivars and enhance gene discovery for chilling tolerance.

Fish represent high quality protein and nutrient sources, but Hg contamination is ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems and can pose health risks to fish and their consumers. Potential health risks posed to fish and humans by Hg contamination in fish were assessed in western Canada and the United States. A large compilation of inland fish Hg concentrations was evaluated in terms of potential health risk to the fish themselves, health risk to predatory fish that consume Hg contaminated fish, and to humans that consume Hg contaminated fish. The probability that a fish collected from a given location would exceed a Hg concentration benchmark relevant to a health risk was calculated. These exceedance probabilities and their associated uncertainties were characterized for fish of multiple size classes at multiple health-relevant benchmarks. The approach was novel and allowed for the assessment of the potential for deleterious health effects in fish and humans associated with Hg contamination in fish across this broad study area. Exceedance probabilities were relatively common at low Hg concentration benchmarks, particularly for fish in larger size classes. Specifically, median exceedances for the largest size classes of fish evaluated at the lowest Hg concentration benchmarks were 0.73 (potential health risks to fish themselves), 0.90 (potential health risk to predatory fish that consume Hg contaminated fish), and 0.97 (potential for restricted fish consumption by humans), but diminished to essentially zero at the highest benchmarks and smallest fish size classes. Exceedances of benchmarks are likely to have deleterious health effects on fish and limit recommended amounts of fish humans consume in western Canada and the United States. Western North America is a region defined by extreme gradients in geomorphology and climate, which support a diverse array of ecological communities and natural resources. The region also has extreme gradients in mercury (Hg) contamination due to a broad distribution of inorganic Hg sources. These diverse Hg sources and a varied landscape create a unique and complex mosaic of ecological risk from Hg impairment associated with differential methylmercury (MeHg) production and bioaccumulation. Understanding the landscape-scale variation in the magnitude and relative importance of processes associated with Hg transport, methylation, and MeHg bioaccumulation requires a multidisciplinary synthesis that transcends small-scale variability. The Western North America Mercury Synthesis compiled, analyzed, and interpreted spatial and temporal patterns and drivers of Hg and MeHg in air, soil, vegetation, sediments, fish, and wildlife across western North America. This collaboration evaluated the potential risk from Hg to fish, and wildlife health, human exposure, and examined resource management activities that influenced the risk of Hg contamination. This paper integrates the key information presented across the individual papers that comprise the synthesis. The compiled information indicates that Hg contamination is widespread, but heterogeneous, across western North America. The storage and transport of inorganic Hg across landscape gradients are largely regulated by climate and land-cover factors such as plant productivity and precipitation. Importantly, there was a striking lack of concordance between pools and sources of inorganic Hg, and MeHg in aquatic food webs. Additionally, water management had a widespread influence on MeHg bioaccumulation in aquatic ecosystems, whereas mining impacts where relatively localized. These results highlight the decoupling of inorganic Hg sources with MeHg production and bioaccumulation. Together the findings indicate that developing efforts to control MeHg production in the West may be particularly beneficial for reducing food web exposure instead of efforts to simply control inorganic Hg sources., (Published by Elsevier B.V.)

Methylmercury contamination of the environment is an important issue globally, and birds are useful bioindicators for mercury monitoring programs. The available data on mercury contamination of birds in western North America were synthesized. Original data from multiple databases were obtained and a literature review was conducted to obtain additional mercury concentrations. In total, 29219 original bird mercury concentrations from 225 species were compiled, and an additional 1712 mean mercury concentrations, representing 19998 individuals and 176 species, from 200 publications were obtained. To make mercury data comparable across bird tissues, published equations of tissue mercury correlations were used to convert all mercury concentrations into blood-equivalent mercury concentrations. Blood-equivalent mercury concentrations differed among species, foraging guilds, habitat types, locations, and ecoregions. Piscivores and carnivores exhibited the greatest mercury concentrations, whereas herbivores and granivores exhibited the lowest mercury concentrations. Bird mercury concentrations were greatest in ocean and salt marsh habitats and lowest in terrestrial habitats. Bird mercury concentrations were above toxicity benchmarks in many areas throughout western North America, and multiple hotspots were identified. Additionally, published toxicity benchmarks established in multiple tissues were summarized and translated into a common blood-equivalent mercury concentration. Overall, 66% of birds sampled in western North American exceeded a blood-equivalent mercury concentration of 0.2 μg/g wet weight (ww; above background levels), which is the lowest-observed effect level, 28% exceeded 1.0 μg/g ww (moderate risk), 8% exceeded 3.0 μg/g ww (high risk), and 4% exceeded 4.0 μg/g ww (severe risk). Mercury monitoring programs should sample bird tissues, such as adult blood and eggs, that are most-easily translated into tissues with well-developed toxicity benchmarks and that are directly relevant to bird reproduction. Exposure to environmental contaminants has been implicated as a factor in global amphibian decline. Mercury (Hg) is a particularly widespread contaminant that biomagnifies in amphibians and can cause a suite of deleterious effects. However, monitoring contaminant exposure in amphibian tissues may conflict with conservation goals if lethal take is required. Thus, there is a need to develop non-lethal tissue sampling techniques to quantify contaminant exposure in amphibians. Some minimally invasive sampling techniques, such as toe-clipping, are common in population-genetic research, but it is unclear if these methods can adequately characterize contaminant exposure. We examined the relationships between mercury (Hg) concentrations in non-lethally sampled tissues and paired whole-bodies in five amphibian species. Specifically, we examined the utility of three different tail-clip sections from four salamander species and toe-clips from one anuran species. Both tail and toe-clips accurately predicted whole-body THg concentrations, but the relationships differed among species and the specific tail-clip section or toe that was used. Tail-clips comprised of the distal 0-2 cm segment performed the best across all salamander species, explaining between 82 and 92% of the variation in paired whole-body THg concentrations. Toe-clips were less effective predictors of frog THg concentrations, but THg concentrations in outer rear toes accounted for up to 79% of the variability in frog whole-body THg concentrations. These findings suggest non-lethal sampling of tails and toes has potential applications for monitoring contaminant exposure and risk in amphibians, but care must be taken to ensure consistent collection and interpretation of samples.

Mercury (Hg) is a globally distributed environmental contaminant with a variety of deleterious effects in fish, wildlife, and humans. Breeding songbirds may be useful sentinels for Hg across diverse habitats because they can be effectively sampled, have well-defined and small territories, and can integrate pollutant exposure over time and space. We analyzed blood total Hg concentrations from 8,446 individuals of 102 species of songbirds, sampled on their breeding territories across 161 sites in eastern North America [geometric mean Hg concentration = 0.25 μg/g wet weight (ww), range <0.01-14.60 μg/g ww]. Our records span an important time period-the decade leading up to implementation of the USEPA Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, which will reduce Hg emissions from coal-fired power plants by over 90 %. Mixed-effects modeling indicated that habitat, foraging guild, and age were important predictors of blood Hg concentrations across species and sites. Blood Hg concentrations in adult invertebrate-eating songbirds were consistently higher in wetland habitats (freshwater or estuarine) than upland forests. Generally, adults exhibited higher blood Hg concentrations than juveniles within each habitat type. We used model results to examine species-specific differences in blood Hg concentrations during this time period, identifying potential Hg sentinels in each region and habitat type. Our results present the most comprehensive assessment of blood Hg concentrations in eastern songbirds to date, and thereby provide a valuable framework for designing and evaluating risk assessment schemes using sentinel songbird species in the time after implementation of the new atmospheric Hg standards.

Although recent and projected increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide can alter plant phenological development, these changes have not been quantified in terms of floral outcrossing rates or gene transfer. Could differential phenological development in response to rising CO(2) between genetically modified crops and wild, weedy relatives increase the spread of novel genes, potentially altering evolutionary fitness? Here we show that increasing CO(2) from an early 20(th) century concentration (300 µmol mol(-1)) to current (400 µmol mol(-1)) and projected, mid-21(st) century (600 µmol mol(-1)) values, enhanced the flow of genes from wild, weedy rice to the genetically altered, herbicide resistant, cultivated population, with outcrossing increasing from 0.22% to 0.71% from 300 to 600 µmol mol(-1). The increase in outcrossing and gene transfer was associated with differential increases in plant height, as well as greater tiller and panicle production in the wild, relative to the cultivated population. In addition, increasing CO(2) also resulted in a greater synchronicity in flowering times between the two populations. The observed changes reported here resulted in a subsequent increase in rice dedomestication and a greater number of weedy, herbicide-resistant hybrid progeny. Overall, these data suggest that differential phenological responses to rising atmospheric CO(2) could result in enhanced flow of novel genes and greater success of feral plant species in agroecosystems.

Mercury (Hg) is a persistent environmental contaminant found in many freshwater and marine ecosystems. Historical Hg contamination in rivers can impact the surrounding terrestrial ecosystem, but there is little known about how far downstream this contamination persists. In 2009, we sampled terrestrial forest songbirds at five floodplain sites up to 137 km downstream of an historical source of Hg along the South and South Fork Shenandoah Rivers (Virginia, USA). We found that blood total Hg concentrations remained elevated over the entire sampling area and there was little evidence of decline with distance. While it is well known that Hg is a pervasive and long-lasting aquatic contaminant, it has only been recently recognized that it also biomagnifies effectively in floodplain forest food webs. Rhizoctonia solani is a necrotrophic fungal pathogen that causes disease on many crop-plant species. Anastomosis group 1-IA is the causal agent of sheath blight of rice (Oryza sativa L.), one of the most important rice diseases worldwide. R. solani AG1-IA produces a necrosis-inducing phytotoxin and rice cultivar's sensitivity to the toxin correlates with disease susceptibility. Unlike genetic analyses of sheath blight resistance where resistance loci have been reported as quantitative trait loci, phytotoxin sensitivity is inherited as a Mendelian trait that permits high-resolution mapping of the sensitivity genes. An F(2) mapping population derived from parent cultivars 'Cypress' (toxin sensitive) and 'Jasmine 85' (toxin insensitive) was used to map Rsn1, the necrosis-inducing locus. Initial mapping based on 176 F(2) progeny and 69 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers located Rsn1 on the long arm of chromosome 7, with tight linkage to SSR marker RM418. A high-resolution genetic map of the region was subsequently developed using a total of 1,043 F(2) progeny, and Rsn1 was mapped to a 0.7 cM interval flanked by markers NM590 and RM418. Analysis of the corresponding 29 Kb genomic sequences from reference cultivars 'Nipponbare' and '93-11' revealed the presence of four putative genes within the interval. Two are expressed cytokinin-O-glucosyltransferases, which fit an apoptotic pathway model of toxin activity, and are individually being investigated further as potential candidates for Rsn1.

The Rc locus regulates pigmentation of the rice bran layer, and selection for the rc allele (white pericarp) occurred during domestication of the crop. White bran is now ubiquitous among cultivated varieties throughout rice growing regions of the world. We identified a new allele that arose by natural mutation within the rc pseudogene of the cultivar 'Wells'. The mutation restored the reading frame of the gene, and reverted the bran layer pigmentation to red (wild-type). By sequencing the Rc locus in plants derived from red seeds, and linkage analysis in a segregating population, we were able to demonstrate that mutation within rc resulted in the new, dominant, wild-type allele Rc-g.

The aim of this research study is to explore health visitors' beliefs, knowledge and practice in cultural competence. A baseline survey was undertaken with all health visitors working within a West Midlands primary care trust (PCT) which served a significant population of minority ethnic communities. The results show that half the respondents were themselves members of a minority ethnic community. Caribbean origins predominated, with little representation from those of Asian descent. Non-parametric testing indicated that respondents showed there was a significant difference in their ability to meet the needs of minority ethnic communites as opposed to their ability to meet the white population needs. Respondents were able to identify factors which promote, and barriers which hamper use of health visiting services by minority ethnic communities, for example, the standard yet important factors of language and culture. However, racism was not recognised as a significant issue. The need for cultural competence training was seen as a key outcome.This training must reflect the diverse cultural needs of staff and service users.

Background: The potential risks for and implications of black community practitioners working in racist areas is the subject of this article. It provides an overview of the risk of racial harassment and discusses the legal and ethical implications for NHS employees. This article has been written as a result of the author being confronted with the possibility of being sent to work in an area known to be racist. The British National Party's (BNP) recent gains in local elections demonstrate that such areas exist in the UK's towns and cities (BBC News 2003)., Conclusion: The author argues that employers should do all in their power to benefit their employees and this means protecting them from working in racist areas or with racist clients who pose a potential risk.

In patients with unstable angina and non-ST segment myocardial infarction treated with aspirin, heparin, and tirofiban, an early invasive strategy with routine angiography and appropriate revascularization has better clinical outcomes, at a relatively minimal increase in cost.

A foot-operated diluter/dispenser and a projection viewer were developed for use with a rapid bacterial counting technique employing agar droplets. The equipment allows the advantages of the technique to be properly realized and assists many conventional bacteriological tests which may be made at the same time. Significant cost and labor savings are made, with reductions in incubation time, incubator space, and preparative work.

An entirely new mixing device, particularly suitable for preparing bacterial suspensions from foods, fabrics, swabs, and other fairly soft materials, has been developed. With this technique the sample and diluent are put into an inexpensive, sterile plastic bag which is vigorously pounded on its outer surfaces by paddles when placed inside the machine. The resulting compression and shearing forces effectively remove even deep-seated bacteria. After samples are taken for analysis the bag and its remaining contents are thrown away. Labor involved in cleaning and sterilizing reusable homogenizer cups or probes is eliminated, and the device is immediately ready for reuse. Running costs are thus drastically reduced, compared with conventional homogenizers. Additional advantages of this device, which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture, are low noise level, negligible temperature rise, and the small storage space required for bags.
