The InSight mission landed in the Elysium Planitia province on Mars on November 26, 2018. Since 2019, thanks to the deployment of the SEIS seismometer on the surface of the planet, more than a thousand seismic events, the "marsquakes", have been recorded, proving that Mars is seismically active. The analysis of these quakes allowed to probe for the first time the internal structure of Mars, from the crust to the core. The event catalogs allowed to study the seismicity of the planet, and to list the earthquakes according to their characteristics. Thus, marsquakes are divided into several categories, two of which, qualified as low-frequency (LF) and broadband (BB), are of particular interest to us in this thesis. Indeed, LF and BB events are qualified as "tectonic", i.e. they would certainly have been generated by seismic sources such as faults or fractures. Moreover, the selected LF/BB marsquakes are characterized by high quality data and a high signal-to-noise ratio. A dozen of them were located on structures of interest, in particular in the vicinity of Cerberus Fossae, and at the level of the Martian dichotomy. In order to understand the potential involvement of Cerberus Fossae in the triggering of LF/BB marsquakes, and to discuss whether Mars has a current tectonic activity, we study the seismic sources of the region. To do this, we first perform a detailed analysis of the morphology of the Cerberus Fossae system. We use very high-resolution images to finely map the fractures and we compute digital terrain models. The mapping reveals a range of morphologies associated with volcanic dike activity at depth. Measurements of fossae widths and throws decrease eastward, indicating the long-term direction of propagation of the dike-induced fracture system. They also provide insight into the depth geometry and rooting of possible faults and fractures in the Martian crust. The exceptional preservation of the fossae allows us to detect four segmentation scales, where each segmentation scale is formed by a similar number of 3-4 segments. We also estimate that higher stress should exist the intersegment zones and at the ends of grabens, where marsquakes would thus potentially be triggered. We then explore other seismic sources in the region, through a method of seismic moment tensor inversion. The tensors allow us to interpret the nature and the depth of the seismic sources at the origin of the LF/BB marsquakes. In our approach, we invert the body waveforms and the maximum amplitudes of secondary phases from InSight seismograms. We moreover look for solutions with surface waves weaker than the Martian noise. From our moment tensor results, we determined that all our Martian events were triggered at moderate depths of 15-36 km. We infer that the seismic events located on Cerberus Fossae have geometries in agreement with those of the fractures in the system (i.e., similar direction, slope, and motion). We also deduce that they were certainly generated by tectonics. This activity is supposed to be mainly related to the mechanical weakness resulting from the propagation of volcanic dikes at depth. Two events further south, at the level of the Martian dichotomy, are certainly due to compressive fracturing under surface wrinkles. They would thus be indirectly triggered by the planetary thermal contraction., La mission InSight s'est posée dans la province d'Elysium Planitia sur Mars le 26 novembre 2018. Depuis 2019, grâce au déploiement du sismomètre SEIS à la surface de la planète, plus d'un millier d'événements sismiques, les "marsquakes", ont été enregistrés, prouvant que Mars est active sismiquement. L'analyse de ces séismes a alors permis de sonder pour la première fois la structure interne de Mars, de la croûte au noyau. Les catalogues d'événements ont permis d'étudier la sismicité de la planète, et de répertorier les séismes en fonction de leurs caractéristiques. Ainsi, les marsquakes sont divisés en plusieurs catégories, dont deux, qualifiées de basses fréquences (low-frequency, LF) et à large bande (broadband, BB), qui nous intéressent particulièrement dans cette thèse. En effet, les événements LF et BB sont qualifiés de "tectoniques", c'est-à-dire qu'ils auraient certainement été générés par des sources sismiques telles que des failles ou fractures. De plus les marsquakes LF/BB sélectionnés sont caractérisés par des données de haute qualité et un fort rapport signal à bruit. Une dizaine d'entre eux ont été localisés sur des structures d'intérêt, notamment aux alentours de Cerberus Fossae, et au niveau de la dichotomie martienne. Afin de comprendre la potentielle implication de Cerberus Fossae dans le déclenchement des marsquakes, et de discuter si Mars a une activité tectonique actuelle, nous étudions les sources sismiques de la région. Pour cela, tout d'abord nous d'effectuons une analyse fine de la morphologie du système de Cerberus Fossae. Nous utilisons des images très hautes résolutions afin de cartographier finement les fractures et nous calculons des modèles numériques de terrain. La cartographie révèle une gamme de morphologies associées à l'activité des dikes volcaniques en profondeur. Les mesures de largeurs et de rejets des fossés diminuent vers l'est, indiquant la direction de propagation à long terme du système de fractures induit par les dikes. Ils donnent également un aperçu de la géométrie en profondeur et de l'enracinement des éventuelles failles et fractures dans la croûte martienne. La préservation exceptionnelle des fossés nous permet de détecter quatre échelles de segmentation, où chaque échelle de segmentation est formée par un nombre similaire de 3-4 segments. Nous estimons également qu'une contrainte plus élevée devrait exister les zones d'intersegments et aux extrémités des grabens, là où les marsquakes seraient ainsi potentiellement déclenchés. Nous explorons ensuite les autres sources sismiques de la région, au travers d'une méthode d'inversion des tenseurs des moments sismiques. Les tenseurs nous permettent d'interpréter la nature et la profondeur des sources sismiques à l'origine des séismes. Dans notre approche, nous inversons les formes d'onde des ondes de volume et les amplitudes maximales des phases secondaires des sismogrammes d'InSight. Nous recherchons des solutions avec des ondes de surface plus faibles que le bruit martien. A partir de nos résultats sur les tenseurs de moments, nous avons déterminé que tous nos événements ont été déclenchés à des profondeurs modérées de 15-36 km. Nous avons déduit que les événements situés sur Cerberus Fossae ont des géométries en accord avec celles des fractures du système (c'est-à-dire, de direction, pente et mouvement similaires). Nous en déduisons qu'ils ont certainement été générés par de la tectonique. Cette activité est supposée être principalement liée à la faiblesse mécanique résultant de la propagation des dikes volcaniques en profondeur. Deux événements plus au sud, au niveau de la dichotomie martienne, sont quant à eux, certainement dus à la fracturation compressive sous des rides de surface. Ils seraient donc indirectement déclenchés par la contraction thermique planétaire.

On the 26th of November 2018, NASA’s InSight lander successfully touched down on the Martian ground in Elysium Planitia. The lander transported among other instruments a single three-component broadband seismometer to measure seismic events and subsequently determine the seismic activity level and eventually the internal structure of Mars. In this study we focus on characterizing the source mechanisms of the highest-quality marsquakes detected so far: The events with highest SNR occurred on sols 173 (S0173a, May 23rd 2019) and 235 (S0235b, July 27th 2019) with Mw > 3.5, showing clearly polarized P and S waves. The InSight MarsQuake Service has estimated their distances to be around 27 degrees, nearby the Cerberus Fossae Graben system. Two more events, S0183a and S0325b have less clear body wave phases and locations, but are also interpreted to be related to it.We have developed a grid-search based method to fit synthetic waveforms to the observed first arriving P and S wave trains. The four source parameters we invert for in this study are the three unique orientation angles of the source mechanism, strike (φ), dip (δ) and rake (λ), and the depth of the event. Synthetic seismograms are generated by computing Green’s functions based on the epicentral distance determined by the InSight MarsQuake Service (MQS) and radially symmetric velocity models. These Green’s function are then convolved with a source time function including an estimated global body wave attenuation to obtain realistic seismograms. The two high-quality event recordings originating from the Cerberus Fossae (CF) fault system were analyzed. Multiple velocity models, frequency bands and window lengths around the arriving phases were used to explore the non-uniqueness in the inverse problem of the inherently ambiguous single-station data. We found that using plausible structural models based on geophysical modeling, the first 10-15 seconds of the waveforms can be fit, constraining the source mechanism and depth, but that the estimation of the uncertainty remains challenging.
