We examined the relations between parental interpersonal sensitivity and youth social problems and explored the mediational role of child emotion dysregulation. Mothers (N = 42; M age = 39.38) and fathers (N = 41; M age = 39.38) of youth aged 7-12 (N = 42; M age = 9.12) completed measures of their own interpersonal sensitivity and reported on their child's emotion regulation skills and social functioning. Maternal interpersonal sensitivity was positively associated with child social problems, and this relationship was fully mediated by child emotion dysregulation. A bootstrapping technique provided evidence for the significance of the mediation. For fathers, only the association between child emotion dysregulation and child social problems was significant. Our findings suggest one potential mechanism through which maternal behaviors relate to youth psychosocial functioning. Identification of such mechanisms contributes to the development of conceptual models of youth functioning and suggests specific targets for prevention and intervention efforts. Obsessive--compulsive disorder (OCD) in children and adults is a heterogeneous disorder associated with significant psychosocial impairment. Although factor analytic studies have identified symptom dimensions, these analyses do not capture the varied miscellaneous symptoms that fail to load on a specific dimension despite being functionally related. The present study sought to extend the findings of previous research in adults to a sample of youth with OCD (n = 131). Logistic regression analyses were used to examine the predictive value of each of the four symptom factors (contamination symptoms, obsessions and checking, symmetry and ordering, and hoarding) to the miscellaneous OCD symptoms. The vast majority of miscellaneous symptoms (17 of the 18 symptoms) were associated with one or more symptoms factors (i.e., contamination symptoms, obsessions and checking, symmetry, and ordering). Hoarding was not related to any miscellaneous symptom. In addition to improving our understanding about the clinical presentation of pediatric OCD, findings also have important assessment (e.g., understanding which miscellaneous symptoms relate to certain dimensions) and treatment implications (e.g., hierarchy development). Barth syndrome is a rare, x-linked genetic disorder. Few studies have examined psychosocial functioning in this population. The current study examined the psychosocial adjustment in individuals with Barth syndrome, as well as their parents. A secondary aim was to examine demographic as well as psychological correlates and predictors of poorer adjustment in order to identify relevant areas for intervention. Individuals with Barth syndrome completed measures of psychosocial functioning, health-related quality of life, and attitudes toward their illness. Parents completed measures relating to their child’s psychosocial functioning and reported on their own psychological functioning and coping. Results indicated that the majority of individuals and parents reported normative levels of psychological functioning. Younger age was associated with poorer health-related quality of life in some domains. Increased levels of internalizing symptoms were associated with poorer psychosocial functioning in individuals with Barth syndrome. Having a child with externalizing symptoms was associated with increased emotional symptoms for parents, as were certain maladaptive coping strategies. Clinical implications are discussed.
