Background Surgery is the mainstay of treatment for meningioma, the most common primary intracranial tumor, but improvements in meningioma risk stratification are needed and current indications for postoperative radiotherapy are controversial. Recent studies have proposed prognostic meningioma classification systems using DNA methylation profiling, copy number variants, DNA sequencing, RNA sequencing, histology, or integrated models based on multiple combined features. Targeted gene expression profiling has generated robust biomarkers integrating multiple molecular features for other cancers, but is understudied for meningiomas. Methods Targeted gene expression profiling was performed on 173 meningiomas and an optimized gene expression biomarker (34 genes) and risk score (0 to 1) was developed to predict clinical outcomes. Clinical and analytical validation was performed on independent meningiomas from 12 institutions across 3 continents (N = 1856), including 103 meningiomas from a prospective clinical trial. Gene expression biomarker performance was compared to 9 other classification systems. Results The gene expression biomarker improved discrimination of postoperative meningioma outcomes compared to all other classification systems tested in the independent clinical validation cohort for local recurrence (5-year area under the curve [AUC] 0.81) and overall survival (5-year AUC 0.80). The increase in area under the curve compared to the current standard of care, World Health Organization 2021 grade, was 0.11 for local recurrence (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.07–0.17, P

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of two-way, computer-mediated communication on investigator perceptions of whistleblower credibility.Design/methodology/approachInvestigators were recruited to participate in an online experiment that tasked subjects with evaluating simulated two-way, computer-mediated communication between an investigator and whistleblower. Several rival explanations were also examined to account for potential confounds.FindingsWhile anonymous whistleblowers were perceived to be less credible than identified whistleblowers when reporting via one-way communication, perceived whistleblower credibility was not statistically different when using two-way communication. Further, investigators allocated statistically similar amounts to investigate anonymous and identified reports.Research limitations/implicationsBased upon the results of this study, several new research directions can be explored with respect to maintaining anonymity, assessing credibility and designing reporting systems.Practical implicationsThe results support the use of anonymous, two-way communication in whistleblowing reporting systems. Anonymous whistleblowers would benefit from the ability to maintain an active dialogue with investigators without jeopardizing their safety or the investigation.Social implicationsThis study provides empirical support for strengthening whistleblowing reporting channels through the adoption of anonymous, two-way, computer-mediated communication. Doing so can better preserve the anonymity of those willing to report wrongdoing and better protect them from potential retaliation.Originality/valueThis study is among the first to empirically test the longstanding theory that anonymous reports are perceived by investigators as less credible than those from identified individuals. This study is also among the first to consider and incorporate anonymous, two-way communication in whistleblowing reporting.

BACKGROUND Resection of brain metastases (BMs) can help with local disease control, yet predictors of leptomeningeal disease (LMD) after surgery are not well defined. This study examined rates and predictors of LMD in patients who underwent resection of a BM. METHODS A retrospective, single-center study was conducted examining LMD risk for adult patients with a BM that underwent resection with postoperative adjuvant radiation. Logistic regression analyses and a supervised machine learning algorithm (Random forest) were implemented to identify factors within the cohort that were associated with LMD. RESULTS Of the 182 patients in the cohort, 43 patients (23.6%) developed LMD in the postoperative setting with 18 cases of classical LMD (9.9%) and 25 cases of nodular LMD (13.7%). Median censored time to LMD was not reached, and 6-, 12-, and 24-month LMD-free rates from surgery were 93%, 86.3%, and 71.8%, respectively. Median time from surgery to classical and nodular LMD were 13.1 and 9.5 months, respectively (Log-rank p=0.71). Patients diagnosed with classical LMD had worse survival outcomes from LMD diagnosis compared to nodular LMD (2.6 vs 9.7 mo, Log-rank p=0.02), and LMD-subtype was significantly associated with overall survival from the date of surgery (classical vs nodular vs none: 16.1 vs 20 vs 36.7 mo, p CONCLUSIONS Classical-type LMD is associated with worse prognosis compared to nodular-type LMD. Absence of extracranial disease at the time of surgery was the most consistent factor associated with LMD on follow-up.

The oxidation kinetics of silicon hexaboride (SiB6) was studied at different partial pressures of oxygen. The specific weight gain was measured at 1173 K, 1223 K, and 1273 K for $$ P_{{{\text{O}}_{2} }} $$ = 0.1, 0.23, and 0.33 atm using thermogravimetric analysis. The conventional empirical expressions for oxidation were observed at all selected oxygen partial pressures and temperatures. The structural characterization of the oxidation product was characterized using XRD and FT-IR, with SiB6, SiO2, B, and amorphous B2O3 observed after oxidation for 25 hours. The oxidation surface morphology was also characterized to obtain the oxidation product size, ranging from 4.54 to 24.69 µm with increasing $$ P_{{{\text{O}}_{2} }} $$ and temperature. The diffusional activation energy for the oxidation process was also calculated from the empirical constant, obtained from the mathematical fitting of the specific weight gain with time. The oxidation activation energies for SiB6 are 250.72, 235.64, and 232.65 kJ/mol at $$ P_{{{\text{O}}_{2} }} $$ = 0.1, 0.23, and 0.33 atm, respectively.

The half-Heusler alloy TiNiSn is a promising material for high-temperature thermoelectric applications due to its good thermal stability and semiconductor-like electrical properties. Numerous synthesis techniques have been utilized to make TiNiSn, but a comparative study on its thermoelectric properties with respect to processing parameters has not been reported. Based on published experimental data, primary melting methods, such as arc melting or induction levitation melting, do not have a noticeable effect on the final thermoelectric properties, although choice of densification technique and annealing parameters correlate with each thermoelectric property. Thermal conductivity (2.47-6.08 W/m K), governed by lattice scattering effects, was maximized with high density from the spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique as well with low inclusions of metallic impurities and interstitial Ni defects from low-temperature, non-densified processes. Electrical resistivity (4.75-30 µΩ m), inversely related to thermal conductivity, is minimized when density is maximized and chemical defects are favorable from using SPS. All reported TiNiSn alloys contain intermetallic impurities, imparting a global trend of lowered electrical resistivity. Seebeck coefficient (− 273.20 to − 50.71 µV/K), proportional to electrical resistivity, is maximized when charge carrier concentration is minimized by eliminating phase impurities and Ni defects. Porosity has been observed to scatter low-energy electrons, which can increase Seebeck coefficient and electrical resistivity, although no statistical significance is found. An ideal TiNiSn alloy should have intermediate values of all interconnected thermoelectric properties to maximize ZT. Future research work should strive to include quantitative phase analysis to better characterize the contributions of Ni defects and impurity phases toward thermoelectric properties.

Background: Impaired neuromuscular function after concussion has recently been linked to increased risk of lower extremity injuries in athletes. Purpose: To determine if National Football League (NFL) athletes have an increased risk of sustaining an acute, noncontact lower extremity injury in the 90-day period after return to play (RTP) and whether on-field performance differs pre- and postconcussion. Study Design: Cohort study, Level of evidence, 3. Methods: NFL concussions in offensive players from the 2012-2013 to the 2016-2017 seasons were studied. Age, position, injury location/type, RTP, and athlete factors were noted. A 90-day RTP postconcussive period was analyzed for lower extremity injuries. Concussion and injury data were obtained from publicly available sources. Nonconcussed, offensive skill position NFL athletes from the same period were used as a control cohort, with the 2014 season as the reference season. Power rating performance metrics were calculated for ±1, ±2, and ±3 seasons pre- and postconcussion. Conditional logistic regression was used to determine associations between concussion and lower extremity injury as well as the relationship of concussions to on-field performance. Results: In total, 116 concussions were recorded in 108 NFL athletes during the study period. There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of an acute, noncontact lower extremity injury between concussed and control athletes (8.5% vs 12.8%; P = .143), which correlates with an odds ratio of 0.573 (95% CI, 0.270-1.217). Days (66.4 ± 81.9 days vs 45.1 ± 69.2 days; P = .423) and games missed (3.67 ± 3.0 vs 2.9 ± 2.7 games; P = .470) were similar in concussed athletes and control athletes after a lower extremity injury. No significant changes in power ratings were noted in concussed athletes in the acute period (±1 season to injury) when comparing pre- and postconcussion. Conclusion: Concussed, NFL offensive athletes did not demonstrate increased odds of acute, noncontact, lower extremity injury in a 90-day RTP period when compared with nonconcussed controls. Immediate on-field performance of skill position players did not appear to be affected by concussion.

When collaborating on virtual content within 360° mixed reality environments it is often desirable for collaborators to fully immerse themselves within the task space, usually by means of a head-mounted display. However, these socially isolate any co-located collaborators, removing the ability to communicate through important gestural, facial, and body language cues. We present TeleGate, a system that instead utilises a shared immersive display to allow collaboration within remote environments between an arbitrary number of users, keeping collaborators visible while allowing immersive and interactive collaboration within remote environments.

The mobility and ubiquity of mobile head-mounted displays make them a promising platform for telepresence research as they allow for spontaneous and remote use cases not possible with stationary hardware. In this work we present a system that provides immersive telepresence and remote collaboration on mobile and wearable devices by building a live spherical panoramic representation of a user's environment that can be viewed in real time by a remote user who can independently choose the viewing direction. The remote user can then interact with this environment as if they were actually there through intuitive gesture-based interaction. Each user can obtain independent views within this environment by rotating their device, and their current field of view is shared to allow for simple coordination of viewpoints. We present several different approaches to create this shared live environment and discuss their implementation details, individual challenges, and performance on modern mobile hardware; by doing so we provide key insights into the design and implementation of next generation mobile telepresence systems, guiding future research in this domain. The results of a preliminary user study confirm the ability of our system to induce the desired sense of presence in its users.

In the management of diffuse gliomas, the identification and removal of tumor at the infiltrative margin remains a central challenge. Prior work has demonstrated that fluorescence labeling tools and radiographic imaging are useful surgical adjuvants with macroscopic resolution, however they lose sensitivity at the tumor margin and have limited clinical utility for lower grade histologies. Fiber-laser based stimulated Raman histology (SRH) is an optical imaging technique that provides microscopic tissue characterization of unprocessed tissues. It remains unknown whether SRH of tissues taken from the infiltrative glioma margin will identify microscopic residual disease. Here we acquired glioma margin specimens for SRH, histology, and tumor specific tissue characterization. Generalized linear mixed models were used to evaluate agreement. We find that SRH identified residual tumor in 82 of 167 margin specimens (49%), compared to IHC confirming residual tumor in 72 of 128 samples (56%), and H&E confirming residual tumor in 82 of 169 samples (49%). Intraobserver agreements between all 3 modalities were confirmed. These data demonstrate that SRH detects residual microscopic tumor at the infiltrative glioma margin and may be a promising tool to enhance extent of resection.

Body-worn cameras (BWCs) are being deployed in police departments at unprecedented rates according to empirical research. In trying to catch up, research into the technology is now rapidly growing. Especially in the beginning, the technology presented various potential positives, such as increasing police legitimacy and accountability as well as aiding with reports. Research into BWCs is split into seven main themes: General Overviews, Standalone Empirical Works, Police-Citizen Interactions, Perceptions of BWCs, Officer Compliance with BWCs and Impacts on Reports, Organizational Effects, and Costs and Benefits of BWCs. To start, general overviews provides articles and reports which investigate the literature as a whole and identify common themes. Many of these articles entail extensive literature reviews. Standalone Empirical Works includes research that approaches BWCs from new angles and perspectives. The sections Police-Citizen Interactions and Perceptions of BWCs have received the largest amount of attention. Police-Citizen Interactions includes material that examines how BWCs influence citizen cooperation or compliance with the police, citizen complaints of the police, reports of police use of force, and use of procedural justice. Perceptions of BWCs includes research on attitudes held by both citizens and police, though the majority of articles investigate officer beliefs. Officer Compliance with BWCs and Impacts on Reports examines how the beliefs of officers impact usage and subsequent use of footage. Then the article moves into examining how BWCs and organizations reciprocally impact each other. The article ends with presenting reports and articles that weigh the costs and benefits of deploying BWCs.

This study establishes the thermodynamic properties of the Si-B binary alloy system. The electromotive force (emf) as a function of temperature (823 K to 923 K) was measured using solid-state electrochemical cells, represented as $$(-)\,{\text{Pt}},{\text{Ar}}/\{\text{Si}\|{\text{CaF}}_{2}\|\;\{{\text{Si}} - {\text{B}}({\text{alloy}})\}/{\text{Ar}},{\text{Pt}}( + )$$ Using the experimental emf data obtained from the solid-state heterogeneous phase equilibrium, the activities of Si and B in Si-B alloys were calculated. The integral Gibbs energy of mixing $$ (\Delta G^{\text{M}} ) $$ of alloys were calculated from the activity of Si and B. A large negative deviation from ideality was found for the integral Gibbs energy of mixing $$ (\Delta G^{\text{M}} ) $$ of the binary Si-B system. From the activities of Si and B, the Gibbs energies of formation $$ \left( {\Delta G_f^{0 } } \right) $$ of phases present were calculated. The $$ \Delta G_{f}^{ 0 } $$ of SiB3, the most thermodynamically stable phase, was calculated as − 13.13 ± 0.19 kJ/mole-atoms at 923 K. The heterogeneous phases and microstructure after the equilibrium study of the electrode were characterized using XRD, SEM, and EDS analyses.

Objectives To examine associations between parent-reported child sleep walking or talking, nightmares, and trouble sleeping at age eight and psychiatric problems in adulthood (age 30–35) in extremely low birth weight (ELBW; 2500 g) control participants. Methods At age eight, parents of ELBW survivors and NBW control participants completed sleep items on the Child Behavior Checklist assessing the presence of sleep walking/talking, nightmares, or trouble sleeping. At age 30–35, 98 ELBW and 94 NBW individuals completed the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Analyses were conducted in each birth weight group independently. Results In NBW participants, sleep walking/talking in childhood predicted higher BAI and BDI scores, as well as more than three times the odds of having a mood or anxiety disorder (OR = 3.48; 95% CI, 1.26–9.60) at age 30–35. Sex and childhood sleep problem interactions revealed that females who manifested sleep walking/talking as children had higher BAI scores than males. Nightmares in children born at NBW predicted higher BAI scores. These associations persisted despite adjustment for child mental health, sex, socioeconomic status, sexual or physical abuse, and family functioning. Trouble sleeping in childhood did not predict adult mental health problems. Childhood sleep problems did not predict psychopathology in ELBW adults. Conclusions Children born at NBW who manifest sleep walking or talking appear to be at increased risk for developing mood or anxiety disorders in adulthood. No associations between child sleep and adult mental illness were noted in those with ELBW surviviors. Childhood sleep walking/talking may be a unique risk factor for mental health problems later in life.

Bone metastases, the migration of cancers to bone, occur in 65-80% of patients with advanced breast cancer. Metastasized cancer cells interact with cells such as the bone-resorbing osteoclasts to alter bone remodeling. Exercise, often suggested as an intervention for cancer patients, regulates bone remodeling via osteocytes. Osteocytes also signal to endothelial cells, which may affect cancer cell extravasation. Therefore, we hypothesize that mechanically stimulated osteocytes can regulate processes in breast cancer bone metastasis. To test this, we exposed osteocytes to oscillatory fluid flow in vitro using parallel-plate flow chambers. We observed that conditioned medium from flow-stimulated osteocytes increased migration (by 45%) and reduced apoptosis (by 12%) of breast cancer cells. Conditioned medium from osteoclasts conditioned in flowed osteocytes' conditioned medium reduced migration (by 47%) and increased apoptosis (by 55%) of cancer cells. Cancer cell trans-endothelial migration was reduced by 34% toward flowed osteocytes' conditioned medium. This difference was abolished with ICAM-1 or IL-6 neutralizing antibodies. Conditioned medium from endothelial cells conditioned in flowed osteocytes' conditioned medium increased cancer cell apoptosis by 29%. To summarize, this study demonstrated mechanically stimulated osteocytes' potential to affect breast cancer cells not only through direct signaling, but also through osteoclasts and endothelial cells. The anti-metastatic potential of the indirect signalings is particularly exciting since osteocytes are further away from metastasizing cancer cells than osteoclasts and endothelial cells. Future studies into the effect of bone mechanical loading on metastases and its mechanism will assist in designing cancer intervention programs that lowers the risk for bone metastases.

Background: The extent to which patellar tendinopathy affects National Basketball Association (NBA) athletes has not been thoroughly elucidated. Purpose: To assess the impact patellar tendinopathy has on workload, player performance, and career longevity in NBA athletes. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: NBA players diagnosed with patellar tendinopathy between the 2000-2001 and 2018-2019 seasons were identified through publicly available data. Characteristics, return to play (RTP), player statistics, and workload data were compiled. The season of diagnosis was set as the index year, and the statistical analysis compared post- versus preindex data acutely and in the long term, both within the injured cohort and with a matched healthy NBA control cohort. Results: A total of 46 NBA athletes were included in the tendinopathy group; all 46 players returned to the NBA after their diagnosis. Compared with controls, the tendinopathy cohort had longer careers (10.50 ± 4.32 vs 7.18 ± 5.28 seasons; P < .001) and played more seasons after return from injury (4.26 ± 2.46 vs 2.58 ± 3.07 seasons; P = .001). Risk factors for patellar tendinopathy included increased workload before injury (games started, 45.83 ± 28.67 vs 25.01 ± 29.77; P < .001) and time played during the season (1951.21 ± 702.09 vs 1153.54 ± 851.05 minutes; P < .001) and during games (28.71 ± 6.81 vs 19.88 ± 9.36 minutes per game; P < .001). Players with increased productivity as measured by player efficiency rating (PER) were more likely to develop patellar tendinopathy compared with healthy controls (15.65 ± 4.30 vs 12.76 ± 5.27; P = .003). When comparing metrics from 1 year preinjury, there was a decrease in games started at 1 year postinjury (−12.42 ± 32.38 starts; P = .028) and total time played (−461.53 ± 751.42 minutes; P = .001); however, PER at 1 and 3 years after injury was unaffected compared with corresponding preinjury statistics. Conclusion: NBA players with a higher PER and significantly more playing time were more likely to be diagnosed with patellar tendinopathy. Player performance was not affected by the diagnosis of patellar tendinopathy, and athletes were able to RTP without any impact on career longevity.

Maternal thyroid problems during pregnancy have been linked to neurocognitive impairments in children. While studies suggest that disorders of maternal thyroid function during pregnancy are associated with symptoms of mental health problems in children, little is known about the risk of clinically significant psychiatric disorders in adolescence. A sample of 2451 Canadian adolescents enrolled in the Ontario Child Health Study completed the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview for Children and Adolescents at 12–17 years of age. Their mothers self-reported thyroid problems during pregnancy. Gestational thyroid problems were associated with offspring oppositional defiant disorder (ODD; OR 3.73; 95% CI 1.69–8.24), conduct disorder (CD; OR 12.95; 95% CI 5.12–32.75), and social anxiety disorder (SAD; OR 6.25; 95% CI 2.53–15.47). Neither sex nor gestational age moderated associations between prenatal thyroid dysfunction and the majority of outcomes. School performance mediated 8% of the association between thyroid problems and SAD, 21% for CD and 53% for ODD.

Zinc alloys are proposed as suitable biodegradable materials due to an intermediate corrosion rate, non-toxicity, and good mechanical properties. The novel ternary Zn–Li–Cu alloy system is explored in this study as a potential biodegradable material for stent and other temporary medical device applications, utilizing pure Zn, Zn–Li, and Zn–Cu as control materials. After casting and hot-rolling, the chemistry, microstructure, mechanical properties, and immersion corrosion behavior of Zn-0.3Li-xCu (x = 2, 3.5, and 5 wt%) are investigated. The simulated Zn–Li–Cu ternary phase diagram compares well with experimental chemistry and phase fractions. Zn–Li–Cu alloys demonstrated excellent ultimate tensile strength (333–428 MPa) and hardness (125–134HV), with acceptable elongation (18–26%) compared to general stent design criteria and similar materials. In vitro corrosion rates of approximately 0.01 mm yr−1 were observed after 21 days of immersion in Hank’s Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS), where depletion of metal ions is slowed by the formation of a dense corrosion product layer that partially breaks down after 100 days. The current study highlights that the novel Zn–Li–Cu alloys are promising candidates for medical device applications by exceeding stent design criteria.

The ternary Zn–Li–Cu alloy system is investigated as a potential biodegradable metal for orthopaedic and cardiovascular applications. The phase composition, microstructure, hardness, and in vitro corrosion rate of hot-rolled Zn, Zn–0.3Li, Zn–0.3Li–3.5Cu, and Zn–0.3Li–5Cu are examined. The addition of Li and Cu produce LiZn4 and CuZn5 binary phases within the Zn matrix, while there is no interaction between Li and Cu. Hot rolling induces grain refinement and a rolling texture with the addition of Li and Cu. The hardness substantially increases from 39.16 ± 1.49 Hv (pure Zn) to 133.85 ± 4.38 Hv (Zn–0.3Li–5Cu). Immersion-based corrosion rate in Hanks’ solution increases with small additions of Li and Cu content due to microgalvanic behavior. Large addition of Cu promotes a lower corrosion rate due to the noble contribution of CuZn5 phase. The outcome of this study promotes further analysis of the Zn–Li–Cu ternary system for biodegradable metal applications.

The aim of this study was to examine the link between suicidal ideation in adolescence (age 12-16) and symptoms of psychopathology in adulthood (age 22-26) in a birth cohort of extremely low birth weight (ELBW;1000g) survivors and matched normal birth weight (NBW;2500 g) control participants. This study utilized data from a longitudinally followed cohort of 129 ELBW survivors and 116 NBW individuals born in Ontario, Canada between the years 1977 and 1982. Participants self-reported suicidal ideation via questionnaire during adolescence (age 12-16). The depression, anxiety, inattention, and antisocial behavior subscales of the Young Adult Self Report (YASR) were used to assess symptoms of psychopathology during adulthood (age 22-26). Associations were examined in each birth weight group separately prior to and after adjustment for covariates. Before and after adjustment for covariates, suicidal ideation in NBW adolescents predicted symptoms of depression, anxiety, inattention, and antisociality in adulthood. Suicidal ideation among ELBW adolescents predicted inattentive and depressive symptoms, and antisocial behavior only before adjustment. Adolescents born at NBW who endorse suicidal ideation are at elevated risk for developing symptoms of anxiety, depression, inattention, and antisocial problems in adulthood even after adjustment. Among ELBW survivors, the risks were lower and appear to be due to confounding factors.
