Search

Deviations from unitarity of the CKM matrix in the quark sector are considered excellent windows to probe physics beyond the Standard Model. In its leptonic counterpart, the PMNS matrix, these searches are particularly motivated, as the new physics needed to generate neutrino masses often leads to non-unitary mixing among the standard neutrinos. It is then interesting to consider how neutrino oscillations are affected in such scenario. This simple question is, however, subject to several subtleties: What is the correct way to define oscillation probabilities for a non-unitary mixing matrix? Do these probabilities add up to one? Does a non-unitary mixing matrix lead to observable flavor transitions at zero distance? What is the interplay between unitarity constraints obtained from neutrino oscillations and from electroweak precision data? This work aims to shed light on these issues and to clarify the corresponding misconceptions commonly found in the literature. Correlative computational microscopy is accelerating the mapping of dynamic biological systems by integrating morphological and molecular measurements across spatial scales, from organelles to entire organisms. Visualization, measurement, and prediction of interactions among the components of biological systems can be accelerated by generalist computational imaging frameworks that relax the trade-offs imposed by multiplex dynamic imaging. This work reports a generalist framework for wave optical imaging of the architectural order (waveOrder) among biomolecules for encoding and decoding multiple specimen properties from a minimal set of acquired channels, with or without fluorescent labels. waveOrder expresses material properties in terms of elegant physically motivated basis vectors directly interpretable as phase, absorption, birefringence, diattenuation, and fluorophore density; and it expresses image data in terms of directly measurable Stokes parameters. We report a corresponding multi-channel reconstruction algorithm to recover specimen properties in multiple contrast modes. With this framework, we implement multiple 3D computational microscopy methods, including quantitative phase imaging, quantitative label-free imaging with phase and polarization, and fluorescence deconvolution imaging, across scales ranging from organelles to whole zebrafish. We analyze various problems related to the physics of hadrons under extreme conditions of temperature and chemical potentials. On the one hand, we show that the thermal resonances $f_0(500)$ and $K_0^*(700)$, generated in the framework of Unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory $\pi\pi$ and $K\pi$ scattering at finite temperature, play an essential role concerning chiral and $U(1)_A$ restoration. On the other hand, a low-energy effective Lagrangian has been constructed within ChPT at non-zero chemical potential, which we discuss here for an axial chemical potential., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. We present an analysis of two epochs of ACIS observations of the SA(s)c spiral galaxy NGC 3938 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The total exposure time of the observations was 95 ksec with a limiting unabsorbed luminosity of approximately 10^{38}$ ergs/sec assuming a distance of 22 Mpc. A total of 47 discrete merged sources from both epochs were detected at the 3sigma level or greater with the D25 radius. We demonstrate that at the time of the Chandra observations, the nucleus was not detected. We connect the detected sources to counterparts in other wavebands to the degree possible. Based on the two epochs, we identify three variable sources and an additional two that may have varied between the two observations. We do not formally detect any of the five historical supernovae that have occurred in NGC 3938. The luminosity function of NGC 3938 is compared to a recent compilation of 38 galaxies and we identify a potentially significant problem with the `known' distance to NGC 3938. Star formation rate and metallicity values are also computed; the star formation rate is highly dependent upon the adopted distance. The metallicity appears to lie in the range of 8.2-9.2, consistent with values from other work. We analyze how neutrino oscillation and coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering data impact the global SMEFT fit. We first review the mapping between the SMEFT parameters and the so-called NSI framework, commonly considered in the neutrino literature. We also present a detailed discussion of how the measurements for the normalization of neutrino fluxes and cross sections, that will also be affected by the new physics, indirectly impact the measured oscillation probabilities. We then analyze two well-motivated simplified scenarios. Firstly, we study a lepton flavour conserving case, usually assumed in global SMEFT analyses, showing the complementarity of neutrino oscillation and CE$\nu$NS experiments with other low-energy observables. We find that the inclusion of neutrino data allows to constrain previously unbounded SMEFT operators involving the tau flavour and confirm the improvement of the constraint on a combination of Wilson coefficients previously identified. Moreover, we find that neutrino oscillation constraints on NSI are improved when embedded in the global SMEFT framework. Secondly, we study a lepton flavour violating scenario and find that neutrino data also improves over previously derived global constraints thanks to its sensitivity to new combinations of Wilson coefficients., Comment: 25 pages + Appendix

RNA is the only known biopolymer that combines genotype and phenotype in a single molecular entity. This has suggested that the flow of genetic information DNA-RNA-proteins already operating in LUCA could have been preceded by a primordial era when RNA was the genetic and catalytic macromolecule. However, understanding how RNA could have polymerized and subsequently replicated in early Earth remains challenging. We present a theoretical and computational framework to model the non-enzymatic polymerization of ribonucleotides and the template-dependent replication of primordial RNA molecules, at the interfaces between the aqueous solution and a clay mineral supplied by its interlayers and channels. Our results demonstrate that efficient polymerization and accurate replication of single-stranded RNA polymers, sufficiently long to fold and acquire basic functions ($>15$ nt), were possible at clay-water interfaces in early Earth, provided the physico-chemical environment exhibited an oscillatory pattern of large amplitude and a period compatible with spring tide dynamics. Interestingly, the theoretical analysis presents rigorous evidence that RNA replication efficiency increases in oscillating environments compared to constant ones. Moreover, the versatility of our framework enables comparisons between different genetic alphabets, showing that a four-letter alphabet -- particularly when allowing non-canonical base pairs, as in current RNA -- represents an optimal balance of replication speed and sequence diversity in the pathway to life., Comment: This file contains the main manuscript (6 figures) and the Supplementary Information (4 sections and 7 Supplementary figures)

Web application pentesting is a crucial component in the offensive cybersecurity area, whose aim is to safeguard web applications and web services as the majority of the web applications are mounted in publicly accessible web environments. This method requires that the cybersecurity experts pretend and act as real attackers to identify all the errors and vulnerabilities in web applications with the objective of preventing and reducing damages. As this process may be quite complex and the amount of information pentesters need may be big, being able to automate it will help them to easily discover the vulnerabilities given. This project is the direct continuation of the previous initiative called PThelper: An open source tool to support the Penetration Testing process. This continuation is focused on expanding PThelper with the functionality to detect and later report web vulnerabilities in order to address emerging threats and strengthen the ability of the organizations to protect their web applications against potential cyber-attacks.

M-type stars are the most common stars in the universe. They are ideal hosts for the search of exoplanets in the habitable zone (HZ), as their small size and low temperature make the HZ much closer in than their solar twins. Harboring very deep convective layers, they also usually exhibit very intense magnetic fields. Understanding their environment, in particular their coronal and wind properties, is thus very important, as they might be very different from what is observed in the solar system. The mass loss rate of M-type stars is poorly known observationally, and recent attempts to estimate it for some of them (TRAPPIST-1, Proxima Cen) can vary by an order of magnitude. In this work, we revisit the stellar wind properties of M-dwarfs in the light of the latest estimates of $\dot{M}$ through Lyman-$\alpha$ absorption at the astropause and slingshot prominences. We outline a modeling strategy to estimate the mass loss rate, radiative loss and wind speed, with uncertainties, based on an Alfv\'en wave driven stellar wind model. We find that it is very likely that several TRAPPIST-1 planets lie within the Alfv\'en surface, which imply that these planets experience star-planet magnetic interactions (SPMI). In this paper, we study a recently discovered connection between scattering that minimally entangles and emergent symmetries. In a perturbative expansion, we have generalized the constraints of minimal entanglement scattering, beyond qubits, to general qudits of dimension $d.$ Interestingly, projecting on any qubit subspaces, the constraints factorize, so that it is consistent to analyze minimal entanglement by looking at all such subspaces. We start by looking at toy models with two scalar fields, finding that minimal entanglement only allows quartic couplings which have instabilities at large field values and no symmetries. For the two Higgs doublet model, by considering $H^+ H^-\to H^+ H^-$ scattering, we show that minimal entanglement in this channel does not allow an interacting parameter point with enhanced symmetries. These results show that the connection between minimal entanglement and symmetries depends strongly on the scattering channels analyzed and we speculate on the potential resolutions., Comment: v3, 19 pages. The field of artificial intelligence faces significant challenges in achieving both biological plausibility and computational efficiency, particularly in visual learning tasks. Current artificial neural networks, such as convolutional neural networks, rely on techniques like backpropagation and weight sharing, which do not align with the brain's natural information processing methods. To address these issues, we propose the Memory Network, a model inspired by biological principles that avoids backpropagation and convolutions, and operates in a single pass. This approach enables rapid and efficient learning, mimicking the brain's ability to adapt quickly with minimal exposure to data. Our experiments demonstrate that the Memory Network achieves efficient and biologically plausible learning, showing strong performance on simpler datasets like MNIST. However, further refinement is needed for the model to handle more complex datasets such as CIFAR10, highlighting the need to develop new algorithms and techniques that closely align with biological processes while maintaining computational efficiency., Comment: 2024

Standard natural language processing (NLP) pipelines operate on symbolic representations of language, which typically consist of sequences of discrete tokens. However, creating an analogous representation for ancient logographic writing systems is an extremely labor intensive process that requires expert knowledge. At present, a large portion of logographic data persists in a purely visual form due to the absence of transcription -- this issue poses a bottleneck for researchers seeking to apply NLP toolkits to study ancient logographic languages: most of the relevant data are images of writing. This paper investigates whether direct processing of visual representations of language offers a potential solution. We introduce LogogramNLP, the first benchmark enabling NLP analysis of ancient logographic languages, featuring both transcribed and visual datasets for four writing systems along with annotations for tasks like classification, translation, and parsing. Our experiments compare systems that employ recent visual and text encoding strategies as backbones. The results demonstrate that visual representations outperform textual representations for some investigated tasks, suggesting that visual processing pipelines may unlock a large amount of cultural heritage data of logographic languages for NLP-based analyses.

Several scenario-based frameworks exist to aid in vehicle system development and safety assurance. However, there is a need for approaches that combine different types of datasets that offer varying levels of case severity, data richness, and representativeness. This study presents an integrated scenario-based analysis approach that encompasses scenario definition, fusion, parametrization, and test case generation. For this process, ten years of fatal and non-fatal national crash data from the United States are combined with over 34 million miles of naturalistic driving data. An illustrative example scenario, "turns at intersection", is chosen to demonstrate this approach. First, scenario definitions are established from both record-based and continuous time series data. Second, a frequency analysis is performed to understand how often events from the same scenario occur at different severities across datasets. Third, an analysis is performed to show the key factors relevant to the scenario and the distribution of various parameters. Finally, a method to combine both types of data into representative test case scenarios is presented. These techniques improve scenario representativeness in two major ways: first, they populate an entire spectrum of cases ranging from routine events to fatal crashes; and second, they provide context-rich, multi-year data by combining large-scale national and naturalistic datasets., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 27th IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems

Data-driven model reduction methods provide a nonintrusive way of constructing computationally efficient surrogates of high-fidelity models for real-time control of soft robots. This work leverages the Lagrangian nature of the model equations to derive structure-preserving linear reduced-order models via Lagrangian Operator Inference and compares their performance with prominent linear model reduction techniques through an anguilliform swimming soft robot model example with 231,336 degrees of freedom. The case studies demonstrate that preserving the underlying Lagrangian structure leads to learned models with higher predictive accuracy and robustness to unseen inputs.

The nonlinear interaction of x-rays with matter is at the heart of understanding and controlling ultrafast molecular dynamics from an atom-specific viewpoint, providing new scientific and analytical opportunities to explore the structure and dynamics of small quantum systems. At increasingly high x-ray intensity, the sensitivity of ultrashort x-ray pulses to specific electronic states and emerging short-lived transient intermediates is of particular relevance for our understanding of fundamental multi-photon absorption processes. In this work, intense x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) pulses at the European XFEL (EuXFEL) are combined with a gas cell and grating spectrometer for a high-intensity transmission spectroscopy study of multiphoton-induced ultrafast molecular fragmentation dynamics in CF$_4$. This approach unlocks the direct intra-pulse observation of transient fragments, including neutral atoms, by their characteristic absorption lines in the transmitted broad-band x-ray spectrum. The dynamics with and without initially producing fluorine K-shell holes are studied by tuning the central photon energy. The absorption spectra are measured at different FEL intensities to observe nonlinear effects. Transient isolated fluorine atoms and ions are spectroscopically recorded within the ultrashort pulse duration of few tens of femtoseconds. An isosbestic point that signifies the correlated transition between intact neutral CF$_4$ molecules and charged atomic fragments is observed near the fluorine K-edge. The dissociation dynamics and the multiphoton absorption-induced dynamics encoded in the spectra are theoretically interpreted. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of high-intensity x-ray transmission spectroscopy to study ultrafast molecular dynamics with sensitivity to specific intermediate species and their electronic structure., Comment: 30 pages, with 7 figures, submitted to Phys. We here report on the progress of the HHH Workshop, that took place in Dubrovnik in July 2023. After the discovery of a particle that complies with the properties of the Higgs boson of the Standard Model, all Standard Model (SM) parameters are in principle determined. However, in order to verify or falsify the model, the full form of the potential has to be determined. This includes the measurement of the triple and quartic scalar couplings. We here report on ongoing progress of measurements for multi-scalar final states, with an emphasis on three SM-like scalar bosons at 125 GeV, but also mentioning other options. The bandwidth of timed automata characterizes the quantity of information produced/transmitted per time unit. We previously delimited 3 classes of TA according to the nature of their asymptotic bandwidth: meager, normal, and obese. In this paper, we propose a method, based on a finite-state simply-timed abstraction, to compute the actual value of the bandwidth of meager automata. The states of this abstraction correspond to barycenters of the faces of the simplices in the region automaton. Offensive security is one of the state of the art measures to protect enterprises and organizations. Penetration testing, broadly called pentesting, is a branch of offensive security designed to find, rate and exploit these vulnerabilities, in order to assess the security posture of an organization. This process is often time-consuming and the quantity of information that pentesters need to manage might also be difficult to handle. This project takes a practical approach to solve the automation of pentesting and proposes a usable tool, called PTHelper. This open-source tool has been designed in a modular way to be easily upgradable by the pentesting community, and uses state of the art tools and artificial intelligence to achieve its objective.

The habitability of exoplanets hosted by M-dwarf stars dramatically depends on their space weather. We present 3D magneto-hydrodynamic simulations to characterise the magneto-plasma environment and thus the habitability of the Earth-like planet Proxima b when it is subject to both calm and extreme (CME-like) space weather conditions. We study the role of the stellar wind and planetary magnetic field, and determine the radio emission arising from the interaction between the stellar wind of Proxima and the magnetosphere of its planet Proxima b. We find that if Prox b has a magnetic field similar to that of the Earth ($B_{\rm p} = B_\oplus \approx 0.32$ G) or larger, the magnetopause standoff distance is large enough to shield the surface from the stellar wind for essentially any planetary tilt but the most extreme values (close to $90^{\circ} $), under a calm space weather. Even if Proxima b is subject to more extreme space weather conditions, the planet is well shielded by an Earth-like magnetosphere ($B_{\rm p} \approx B_\oplus$; $ \approx 23.5^{\circ}$), or if it has tilt smaller than that of the Earth. For calm space weather conditions, the radio emission caused by the day-side reconnection regions can be as high as 7$\times10^{19}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in the super-Alfv\'enic regime, and is on average almost an order of magnitude larger than the radio emission in the sub-Alfv\'enic cases, due to the much larger contribution of the bow shock. We also find that the energy dissipation at the bow shock is independent of the angle between the planet's magnetic dipole and the incident stellar wind flow. If Prox b is subject to extreme space weather conditions, the radio emission is more than two orders of magnitude larger than under calm space weather conditions. Stellar rotation at early ages plays a crucial role in the survival of primordial atmospheres around Earth-mass exoplanets. Earth-like planets orbiting fast-rotating stars may undergo complete photoevaporation within the first few hundred Myr driven by the enhanced stellar XUV radiation, while planets orbiting slow-rotating stars are expected to experience difficulty to lose their primordial envelopes. Besides the action of stellar radiation, stellar winds induce additional erosion on these primordial atmospheres, altering their morphology, extent, and causing supplementary atmospheric losses. In this paper, we study the impact of activity-dependent stellar winds on primordial atmospheres to evaluate the extent at which the action of these winds can be significant in the whole planetary evolution at early evolutionary stages. We performed 3D magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of the interaction of photoevaporating atmospheres around unmagnetized Earth-mass planets in the time-span between 50 and 500 Myr, analyzing the joint evolution of stellar winds and atmospheres for both fast- and slow-rotating stars. Our results reveal substantial changes in the evolution of primordial atmospheres when influenced by fast-rotating stars, with a significant reduction in extent at early ages. In contrast, atmospheres embedded in the stellar winds from slow-rotating stars remain largely unaltered. The interaction of the magnetized stellar winds with the ionized upper atmospheres of these planets allows to evaluate the formation and evolution of different MHD structures, such as double-bow shocks and induced magnetospheres. This work will shed light to the first evolutionary stages of Earth-like exoplanets, that are of crucial relevance in terms of planet habitability.

The extreme velocities and high ionization states of ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) make them a promising candidate for AGN feedback on the evolution of the host galaxy. However, their exact underlying driving mechanism is not yet fully understood. Given that the variability of UFOs may be used to distinguish among different launching mechanisms, we aim to search for and characterize the responses of the UFO properties to the variable irradiating luminosity. We performed a high-resolution spectroscopy of archival XMM-Newton observations on six highly-accreting NLS1 galaxies. The state-of-the-art methods of the blind Gaussian line scan and photoionization model scan are used to identify UFO solutions. We search for ionized winds and investigate the structure of ionized winds and their responses to the luminosity variations. The powerful photoionization model scan reveals three previously unreported UFOs in RE J1034+396, PG 1244+026 and I ZW 1, and two new WAs in RE J1034+396. The entrained UFOs are discovered in 4 (66%) AGN, supporting the shocked outflow interpretation for AGN ionized winds. 2 out of 7 (28%) UFOs seem to respond to the continuum and 3 (43%) UFOs hint at a radiatively accelerated nature. Combined with published works, we do not find any correlations between UFO responses and AGN properties except for a tentative ($\sim1.8\sigma$) anti-correlation between the UFO acceleration and the Eddington ratio, to be confirmed by further observations and an enlarged sample. The kinetic energy of UFOs, mostly detected in soft X-rays, is found to have a large uncertainty. We, therefore, cannot conclude whether soft X-ray UFOs have sufficient energy to drive the AGN feedback, although they are very promising based on some reasonable assumptions., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables; 8 figures and 1 table in appendix; accepted for publication in A&A

We present the electrostatic control of photoluminescence of monolayer MoS$_2$ at room temperature via integration of free-standing BaTiO$_3$ (BTO), a ferroelectric perovskite oxide, layers. We show that the use of BTO leads to highly tunable exciton emission of MoS$_2$ in a minimal range of gate voltages, effectively controlling the neutral excitons to charged excitons (trions) conversion. Due to BTO's ferroelectric polarization-induced doping we observe large peak emission shifts as well as a large and tunable A trion binding energy in the range of 40-100 meV. To further investigate the efficacy of electrostatic control, we compared our measurements with those carried out when the BTO is replaced by a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) dielectric layer of comparable thickness, confirming BTO's superior gating properties and thus lower power consumption. Additionally, we take advantage of the ferroelectric switching of BTO by fabricating devices where the BTO layer is decoupled from the gate electrode with a SiO$_2$ layer. Choosing to isolate the BTO allows us to induce large remanent behavior of MoS$_2$'s excitonic features, observing hysteretic behavior in the peak energy ratio between A exciton and its trion, as well as hysteretic behavior in the doping-related trion energy shift. This study illustrates the rich physics involved in combining free-standing complex oxide layers with two-dimensional materials.

Using a Taylor rule amended with official reserves movements, we derive country-specific monetary shocks and employ a local projections-estimator for tracking gender-disaggregated labor-market responses in 99 developing economies from 2009 to 2021. Results show that women experience more negative post-shock employment responses than men, contributing to a deepening of the gender gaps on the labor market. After the shock, women leave the labor market more so than men, which results in an apparently intact or even improved unemployment outcome for women. We find limited evidence of sector-specific reaction to interest rates. Additionally, we identify an intense worsening of women-s position on the labor market in high-growth environments as well under monetary policy tightening. Developing Asia and Latin America experience the most significant detrimental effects on women's employment, Africa exhibits a slower manifestation of the monetary shocks-impact and developing Europe shows the mildest effects.
