One major research area in the empirical study of literature pertains to the role of foregrounding (i. e., stylistic deviations and parallelism) in the reading process. The associated phenomena are arguably key to understanding what distinguishes literary reading and essential for the investigation of its impact on readers’ interpretation and aesthetic appreciation. We trace the origins of the concept back to Aristotle and follow various theoretical elaborations in the works of twentieth-century literary scholars and linguists, right up to the moment when developments took an empirical turn. We will see that the original scholarly assumptions were inspiration for an impressive amount of qualitative (e. g., think-aloud studies and in-depth interviews) and quantitative (e. g., experiments, neurocognitive studies) research. The results have deepened our insights about the way textual foregrounding affects readers’ experiences and how these experiences may be associated with carry-over effects (e. g., critical thinking abilities). Besides the state of the art in all the relevant lines of research, we offer readers a comprehensive overview of the many remaining problems that require further (perhaps interdisciplinary) study.

Item does not contain fulltext, Readers experience a number of sensations during reading. They do not - or do not only - process words and sentences in a detached, abstract manner. Instead they "perceive" what they read about. They see descriptions of scenery, feel what characters feel, and hear the sounds in a story. These sensations tend to be grouped under the umbrella terms "mental simulation" and "mental imagery." This chapter provides an overview of empirical research on the role of mental simulation during literary reading. Our chapter also discusses what mental simulation is and how it relates to mental imagery. Moreover, it explores how mental simulation plays a role in leading models of literary reading and investigates under what circumstances mental simulation occurs during literature reading. Finally, the effect of mental simulation on the literary reader's experience is discussed, and suggestions and unresolved issues in this field are formulated.

We report the first (in)elastic scattering measurement of with the capability to select and measure in a broad energy range the proton resonances in contributing to the reaction at type I x-ray burst energies. Contains fulltext : 171850.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access), Background and purpose - Currently, Propionibacterium is frequently recognized as a causative microorganism of prosthetic joint infection (PJI). We assessed treatment success at 1- and 2-year follow-up after treatment of Propionibacterium-associated PJI of the shoulder, hip, and knee. Furthermore, we attempted to determine whether postoperative treatment with rifampicin is favorable. Patients and methods - We conducted a retrospective cohort study in which we included patients with a primary or revision joint arthroplasty of the shoulder, hip, or knee who were diagnosed with a Propionibacterium-associated PJI between November 2008 and February 2013 and who had been followed up for at least 1 year. Results - We identified 60 patients with a Propionibacterium-associated PJI with a median duration of 21 (0.1-49) months until the occurrence of treatment failure. 39 patients received rifampicin combination therapy, with a success rate of 93% (95% CI: 83-97) after 1 year and 86% (CI: 71-93) after 2 years. The success rate was similar in patients who were treated with rifampicin and those who were not. Interpretation - Propionibacterium-associated PJI treated with surgery in combination with long-term antibiotic administration had a successful outcome at 1- and 2-year follow-up irrespective of whether the patient was treated with rifampicin. Prospective studies are needed to determine whether the use of rifampicin is beneficial in the treatment of Propionibacterium-associated PJI.

Looking at possible influences of friends on adolescent delinquent behaviour is important as this behaviour is growing amongst adolescents. (Possible) gender differences and the influence of adolescents friends are the main focus of this study. 145 adolescents participated through questionnaires. Based on the differential association theory, the hypothesis was stated that spending more time with delinquent friends and having more delinquent friends results in more delinquency. A linear regression analyses was used in answering this question. Results indicate that boys show more delinquent behaviour, have more delinquent friends and spent more time with these friends then girls. Adolescents who maintain relationship with much delinquent friends have a higher potential of becoming delinquent themselves. This applies to boys more then to girls. All in all, these findings support the differential association theory.

A major role for visual word recognition has been attributed to the orthographic neighbors of a word, i.e., words that are orthographically similar to a target word. It has been demonstrated that the presence of orthographic neighbors facilitates the recognition of words, but hinders the rejection of nonwords. It is therefore assumed that representations of orthographic neighbors are at least partially activated during word recognition, and that they influence word recognition depending on the specific task context. In the present study, we used fMRI to examine the neural bases of the effect of orthographic neighborhood size on speeded lexical decisions to words and nonwords. Our results demonstrate lexicality X neighborhood size interactions in mid-dorsolateral and medial prefrontal cortex, suggesting the involvement of a domain-general, extra-lexical process for orthographic neighborhood effects on word and nonword processing. This result challenges computational models that offer purely lexical accounts of the orthographic neighborhood effect and suggests an important role for executive control functions during visual word recognition.

Lateral migration radiography (LMR) is a new form of Compton backscatter imaging (CBI) that utilizes both multiple-scatter and single-scatter photons. The LMR imaging modality uses two pairs of detectors. Each set has a detector that is uncollimated to predominantly image single-scatter photons and the other collimated to image predominantly multiple-scattered photons. This allows generation of two separate images, one containing primarily surface features and the other containing primarily subsurface features. These two images make LMR useful for imaging and identifying objects to a depth of several X-ray photon mean free paths even in the presence of unknown surface clutter or surface imperfections.

Contains fulltext : 54642.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access), The present study compared imitation performance in patients with ideomotor apraxia (IMA), eight right hemispheric-damaged patients, and eight control participants without neurological damage in three experiments. Experiment 1 confirmed in the Goldenberg test that IMA patients were particularly impaired in hand gestures and combined finger and hand gestures, but not in the imitation of finger gestures, compared to the other two groups. Experiment 2, however, demonstrated that finger selection is not per se preserved in imitative behaviour in patients with IMA. Experiment 3 confirmed this finding in an experiment under visual control. Together, the results add evidence to the idea that imitation should be viewed from a goal-directed rather than a body-mapping perspective, and that highest priority is given to more distal aspects of imitation as reaching for the correct object, rather than the means used to achieve the goal of a modelled action.
