Search

A quarter of a century has passed since the observing technique of integral field spectroscopy (IFS) was first applied to planetary nebulae (PNe). Progress after the early experiments was relatively slow, mainly because of the limited field-of-view (FoV) of first generation instruments.With the advent of MUSE at the ESO Very Large Telescope, this situation has changed. MUSE is a wide field-of-view, high angular resolution, one-octave spanning optical integral field spectrograph with high throughput. Its major science mission has enabled an unprecedented sensitive search for Ly{\alpha} emitting galaxies at redshift up to z=6.5. This unique property can be utilized for faint objects at low redshift as well. It has been demonstrated that MUSE is an ideal instrument to detect and measure extragalactic PNe with high photometric accuracy down to very faint magnitudes out to distances of 30 Mpc, even within high surface brightness regions of their host galaxies. When coupled with a differential emission line filtering (DELF) technique, MUSE becomes far superior to conventional narrow-band imaging, and therefore MUSE is ideal for accurate Planetary Nebula Luminosity Function (PNLF) distance determinations. Thanks to the MUSE integral field spectrograph on the VLT, extragalactic distance measurements with the [O III] 5007 A planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF) are now possible out to approx. 40 Mpc. Here we analyze the VLT/MUSE data for 20 galaxies from the ESO public archive to identify the systems' planetary nebulae (PNe) and determine their PNLF distances. Three of the galaxies do not contain enough PNe for a robust measure of the PNLF, and the results for one other system are compromised by the galaxy's internal extinction. However, we obtain robust PNLF distances for the remaining 16 galaxies, two of which are isolated and beyond 30 Mpc in a relatively unperturbed Hubble flow. From these data, we derive a Hubble Constant of 74.2 +/- 7.2 (stat) +/-3.7 (sys) km/s/Mpc, a value that is very similar to that found from other quality indicators (e.g., Cepheids, the tip of the red giant branch, and surface brightness fluctuations). At present, the uncertainty is dominated by the small number of suitable galaxies in the ESO archival and their less than ideal observing conditions and calibrations. Based on our experience with these systems, we identify the observational requirements necessary for the PNLF to yield a competitive value for H0 that is independent of the SN Ia distance scale, and help resolve the current tension in the Hubble constant., Comment: 60 pages, 65 figures, published at ApJS 271, 40. Planetary nebula (PN) surveys in systems beyond ~10 Mpc often find high-excitation, point-like sources with [O III] $\lambda 5007$ fluxes greater than the apparent bright-end cutoff of the planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF). Here we identify PN superpositions as one likely cause for the phenomenon and describe the proper procedures for deriving PNLF distances when object blends are a possibility. We apply our technique to two objects: a model Virgo-distance elliptical galaxy observed through a narrow-band interference filter, and the Fornax lenticular galaxy NGC 1380 surveyed with the MUSE integral-field unit spectrograph. Our analyses show that even when the most-likely distance to a galaxy is unaffected by the possible presence of PN superpositions, the resultant value will still be biased towards too small a distance due to the asymmetrical nature of the error bars. We discuss the future of the PNLF in an era where current ground-based instrumentation can push the technique to distances beyond ~35 Mpc.

We report initial results from an ongoing spectroscopic survey of central stars of faint planetary nebulae (PNe), obtained with the Low-Resolution Spectrograph on the Hobby-Eberly Telescope. The six PN nuclei (PNNi) discussed here all have strong emission at the O VI 3811-3834 A doublet, indicative of very high temperatures. Five of them--the nuclei of Ou 2, Kn 61, Kn 15, Abell 72, and Kn 130--belong to the hydrogen-deficient PG 1159 class, showing a strong absorption feature of He II and C IV at 4650-4690 A. Based on exploratory comparisons with synthetic model-atmosphere spectra, and the presence of Ne VIII emission lines, we estimate them to have effective temperatures of order 170,000 K. The central star of Kn 15 has a Wolf-Rayet-like spectrum, with strong and broad emission lines of He II, C IV, N V, and O V-VI. We classify it [WO2], but we note that the N V 4604-4620 A emission doublet is extremely strong, indicating a relatively high nitrogen abundance. Several of the emission lines in Kn 15 vary in equivalent width by factors as large as 1.5 among our four observations from 2019 to 2022, implying significant variations in the stellar mass-loss rate. We encourage spectroscopic monitoring. Follow-up high-time-resolution photometry of these stars would be of interest, given the large fraction of pulsating variables seen among PG 1159 and [WO] PNNi., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

We perform a deep survey of planetary nebulae (PNe) in the spiral galaxy NGC 300 to construct its planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF). We aim to derive the distance using the PNLF and to probe the characteristics of the most luminous PNe. We analyse 44 fields observed with MUSE at the VLT, covering a total area of $\sim11$ kpc$^2$. We find [OIII]5007 sources using the differential emission line filter (DELF) technique. We identify PNe through spectral classification using the aid of the BPT-diagram. The PNLF distance is derived using the maximum likelihood estimation technique. For the more luminous PNe, we also measure their extinction using the Balmer decrement. We estimate the luminosity and effective temperature of the central stars of the luminous PNe, based on estimates of the excitation class and the assumption of optically thick nebulae. We identify 107 PNe and derive a most-likely distance modulus $(m-M)_0 = 26.48^{+0.11}_{-0.26}$ ($d = 1.98^{+0.10}_{-0.23}$ Mpc). We find that the PNe at the PNLF cut-off exhibit relatively low extinction, with some high extinction cases caused by local dust lanes. We present the lower limit luminosities and effective temperatures of the central stars for some of the brighter PNe. We also identify a few Type I PNe that come from a young population with progenitor masses $>2.5 \, M_\odot$, however do not populate the PNLF cut-off. The spatial resolution and spectral information of MUSE allow precise PN classification and photometry. These capabilities also enable us to resolve possible contamination by diffuse gas and dust, improving the accuracy of the PNLF distance to NGC 300., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures. A long-term (1995-2016) survey for novae in the nearby Andromeda galaxy (M31) was conducted as part of the Research-Based Science Education initiative. During the course of the survey 180 nights of observation were completed at Kitt Peak, Arizona. A total of 262 novae were either discovered or confirmed, 40 of which have not been previously reported. Of these, 203 novae form a spatially-complete sample detected by the KPNO/WIYN 0.9-m telescope within a $20'\times20'$ field centered on the nucleus of M31. An additional 50 novae are part of a spatially-complete sample detected by the KPNO 4-m telescope within a larger $36'\times36'$ field. Consistent with previous studies, it is found that the spatial distribution of novae in both surveys follows the bulge light of M31 somewhat more closely than the overall background light of the galaxy. After correcting for the limiting magnitude and the spatial and temporal coverage of the surveys, a final nova rate in M31 is found to be $R=40^{+5}_{-4}$ yr$^{-1}$, which is considerably lower than recent estimates. When normalized to the $K$-band luminosity of M31, this value yields a luminosity-specific nova rate, $\nu_K = 3.3\pm0.4$ yr$^{-1} [10^{10} L_{\odot,K}]^{-1}$. By scaling the M31 nova rate using the relative infrared luminosities of M31 and our Galaxy, a nova rate of $R_\mathrm{G}=28^{+5}_{-4}$ is found for the Milky Way., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures. The [O III ] 5007 Planetary Nebula Luminosity Function (PNLF) is an established distance indicator that has been used for more than 30 years to measure the distances of galaxies out to ~15 Mpc. With the advent of the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer on the Very Large Telescope (MUSE) as an efficient wide-field integral field spectrograph, the PNLF method is due for a renaissance, as the spatial and spectral information contained in the instrument's datacubes provides many advantages over classical narrow-band imaging. Here we use archival MUSE data to explore the potential of a novel differential emission-line filter (DELF) technique to produce spectrophotometry that is more accurate and more sensitive than other methods. We show that DELF analyses are superior to classical techniques in high surface brightness regions of galaxies and we validate the method both through simulations and via the analysis of data from two early-type galaxies (NGC 1380 and NGC 474) and one late-type spiral (NGC 628). We demonstrate that with adaptive optics support or under excellent seeing conditions, the technique is capable of producing precision (< 0.05 mag) [O III ] photometry out to distances of 40 Mpc while providing discrimination between planetary nebulae and other emission-line objects such as H II regions, supernova remnants, and background galaxies. These capabilities enable us to use MUSE to measure precise PNLF distances beyond the reach of Cepheids and the tip of the red giant branch method, and become an additional tool for constraining the local value of the Hubble constant., Comment: 59 pages, 36 figures. We present the identification of 34 likely binary central stars (CSs) of planetary nebulae (PNe) from {\it Kepler/K2} data, seven of which show eclipses. Of these, 29 are new discoveries. Two additional CSs with more complicated variability are also presented. We examined the light curves of all `possible', `likely' and `true' PNe in every {\it Kepler/K2} campaign (0 through 19) to identify CS variability that may indicate a binary CS. For Campaigns 0, 2, 7, 15, and 16 we find 6 likely or confirmed variables among 21 PNe. Our primary effort, though, was focused on Campaign 11 which targeted a Galactic bulge field containing approximately 183 PNe, in which we identified 30 candidate variable CSs. The periods of these variables range from 2.3~h to 30~d, and based on our analysis, most are likely to be close binary star systems. We present periods and preliminary classifications (eclipsing, double degenerate, or irradiated systems) for the likely binaries based on light curve shape. From our total sample of 204 target PNe, with a correction for incompleteness due to magnitude limits, we calculate a binary fraction of PN central stars to be 20.7 percent for all the observed PNe, or 23.5 percent if we limit our sample only to `true' PNe. However these fractions are almost certainly lower limits due to the large angular size of the \emph{Kepler} pixels, which leads to reduced sensitivity in detecting variability, primarily as a result of dilution and noise from the nebula and neighbouring stars. Eight planetary nebulae have been identified as `born-again', a class of object typified by knotty secondary ejecta having low masses ($\sim$$10^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$) with nearly no hydrogen. Abell 30, the archetype of the class, also belongs to a small subset of planetary nebulae that exhibit extreme abundance discrepancy factors (where Abell 30 is the most extreme), a phenomenon strongly linked to binary star interactions. We report the presence of light curve brightness variations having a period of 1.060 days that are highly suggestive of a binary central star in Abell 30. We use imaging and spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to examine the properties of a bright planetary nebula (PN) projected within M31's young open cluster B477-D075. We show that the probability of a chance superposition of the PN on the cluster is small, ${\lesssim}2\%$. Moreover, the radial velocity of the PN is the same as that of the cluster within the measurement error of ${\sim}10$ km s$^{-1}$. Given the expected ${\sim}70$ km s$^{-1}$ velocity dispersion in this region, ${\sim}$8 kpc from M31's nucleus, the velocity data again make it extremely likely that the PN belongs to the cluster. Applying isochrone fitting to archival color-magnitude photometric data from the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys, we determine the cluster age and metallicity to be 290 Myr and $Z = 0.0071$, respectively, implying an initial mass of $3.38^{+0.03}_{-0.02} \, M_{\odot}$ for any PN produced by the cluster. From HST's Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph observations and Cloudy photoionization modeling, we find that the PN is likely a Type I planetary, with a nitrogen abundance that is enhanced by ${\sim}$5-6 times over the solar value scaled to the cluster metallicity. If the PN is indeed a cluster member, these data present strong empirical evidence that hot-bottom burning occurs in AGB stars with initial masses as low as $3.4 \, M_{\odot}$., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables

We present a unique method that allows the LSST to scan the sky for stellar variability on short timescales. The operational component of the strategy requires LSST to take star trail images. The image processing component uses deep learning to sift for transient events on timescales down to 10 ms. We advocate for enabling this observing mode with LSST, as coupling this capability with the LSST's tremendous 319.5 m$^2$deg$^2$ etendue will produce the first wide area optical survey of the universe on these timescales. We explain how these data will advance both planned lines of investigation and enable new research in the areas of stellar flares, cataclysmic variables, active galactic nuclei, Kuiper Belt objects, gamma-ray bursts, and fast radio bursts.

We measure the Balmer decrements of 23 of the brightest planetary nebulae (PNe) in the inner bulge ($r \lesssim 3$ arcmin) of M31 and de-redden the bright end of the region's [O III] $\lambda 5007$ planetary nebula luminosity function. We show that the most luminous PNe produce $\gtrsim 1{,}200 \, \rm{L}_{\odot}$ of power in their [O III] $\lambda 5007$ line, implying central star luminosities of at least $\sim 11{,}000 \, \rm{L}_{\odot}$. Even with the most recent accelerated-evolution post-AGB models, such luminosities require central star masses in excess of $0.66 \, \rm{M}_{\odot}$, and main sequence progenitors of at least $\sim 2.5 \, \rm{M}_{\odot}$. Since M31's bulge has very few intermediate-age stars, we conclude that conventional single-star evolution cannot be responsible for these extremely luminous objects. We also present the circumstellar extinctions for the region's bright PNe and demonstrate that the distribution is similar to that found for PNe in the Large Magellanic Cloud, with a median value of $A_{5007} = 0.71$. Finally, we compare our results to extinction measurements made for PNe in the E6 elliptical NGC 4697 and the interacting lenticular NGC 5128. We show that such extinctions are not unusual, and that the existence of very high-mass PN central stars is a general feature of old stellar populations. Our results suggest that single-star population synthesis models significantly underestimate the maximum luminosities and total integrated light of AGB stars., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures

The planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF) has been used as an extragalactic distance indicator since the 1980's, but there are still unsolved problems associated with its use. One of the most serious involves PNLF distances beyond ~ 10 Mpc, which tend to be slightly smaller than those of other methods. We consider the implications of previous spectroscopic investigations that found that several of the brightest planetary nebula (PN) candidates in M74 are actually compact supernova remnants (SNRs). Using narrow-band imaging data from the KPNO 4-m telescope, we measure the [O III] $\lambda$5007 and H$\alpha$ fluxes of all the known SNRs in M31 and M33, and test whether those objects could be misidentified as bright PNe at distances beyond ~ 10 Mpc. Our results suggest that compact SNRs are not an important source of contamination in photometric surveys for extragalactic PNe., Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure

The globular cluster (GC) system of our Galaxy contains four planetary nebulae (PNe): K 648 (or Ps 1) in M15, IRAS 18333-2357 in M22, JaFu 1 in Pal 6, and JaFu 2 in NGC 6441. Because single-star evolution at the low stellar mass of present-epoch GCs was considered incapable of producing visible PNe, their origin presented a puzzle. We imaged the PN JaFu 1 with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to obtain photometry of its central star (CS) and high-resolution morphological information. We imaged IRAS 18333-2357 with better depth and resolution, and we analyzed its archival HST spectra to constrain its CS temperature and luminosity. All PNe in Galactic GCs now have high-quality HST data, allowing us to improve CS mass estimates. We find reasonably consistent masses between 0.53 and 0.58 Msun for all four objects, though estimates vary when adopting different stellar evolutionary calculations. The CS mass of IRAS 18333-2357, though, depends strongly on its temperature, which remains elusive due to reddening uncertainties. For all four objects, we consider their CS and nebular masses, their morphologies, and other incongruities to assess the likelihood that these objects formed from binary stars. Although generally limited by uncertainties (~0.02 Msun) in post-AGB tracks and core mass vs. luminosity relations, the high-mass CS in K 648 indicates a binary origin. The CS of JaFu 1 exhibits compact bright [O III] and Halpha emission, like EGB 6, suggesting a binary companion or disk. Six planetary nebulae (PN) are known in the Kepler space telescope field of view, three newly identified. Of the 5 central stars of PN with useful Kepler data, one, J193110888+4324577, is a short-period, post common envelope binary exhibiting relativistic beaming effects. A second, the central star of the newly identified PN Pa5, has a rare O(He) spectral type and a periodic variability consistent with an evolved companion, where the orbital axis is almost aligned with the line of sight. The third PN, NGC~6826 has a fast rotating central star, something that can only be achieved in a merger. Fourth, the central star of the newly identified PN Kn61, has a PG1159 spectral type and a mysterious semi-periodic light variability which we conjecture to be related to the interplay of binarity with a stellar wind. Finally, the central star of the circular PN A61 does not appear to have a photometric variability above 2 mmag. With the possible exception of the variability of Kn61, all other variability behaviour, whether due to binarity or not, would not easily have been detected from the ground. We conclude, based on very low numbers, that there may be many more close binary or close binary products to be discovered with ultra-high precision photometry. With a larger number of high precision photometric observations we will be able to determine how much higher than the currently known 15 per cent, the short period binary fraction for central stars of PN is likely to be., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures

We report the results of an [O III] 5007 spectroscopic survey for planetary nebulae (PNe) located within the star clusters of M31. By examining R ~ 5000 spectra taken with the WIYN+Hydra spectrograph, we identify 3 PN candidates in a sample of 274 likely globular clusters, 2 candidates in objects which may be globular clusters, and 5 candidates in a set of 85 younger systems. The possible PNe are all faint, between ~2.5 and ~6.8 mag down the PN luminosity function, and, partly as a consequence of our selection criteria, have high excitation, with [O III] 5007 to H-beta ratios ranging from 2 to ~12. We discuss the individual candidates, their likelihood of cluster membership, and the possibility that they were formed via binary interactions within the clusters. Our data are consistent with the suggestion that PN formation within globular clusters correlates with binary encounter frequency, though, due to the small numbers and large uncertainties in the candidate list, this study does not provide sufficient evidence to confirm the hypothesis., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. 54 pages, including 9 figures and 4 tables

We present [OIII]{\lambda}5007 fluxes and angular diameters for 435 Planetary Nebulae (PN) in the central 10' x 10' region towards the Galactic bulge. Our sample is taken from the new discoveries of the MASH PN surveys as well as previously known PN. This sample accounts for 80% of known PN in this region. Fluxes and diameters are measured from narrow-band imaging with the MOSAIC-II camera on the 4-m Blanco telescope at the Cerro-Tololo Inter-American Observatory. This is the largest (~60 square degrees), uniform [OIII]{\lambda}5007 survey of the inner Galactic bulge ever undertaken. 104 of the objects have measured [OIII]{\lambda}5007, [OIII]{\lambda}4959, H{\alpha} or H{\beta} fluxes from the literature, which we use to undertake a detailed comparison to demonstrate the integrity of our new fluxes. Our independent measurements are in excellent agreement with the very best literature sources over two orders of magnitude, while maintaining good consistency over five orders of magnitude. The excellent resolution and sensitivity of our data allows not only for a robust set of homogenous PN fluxes, but provides greater detail into their intricate, otherwise undetermined [OIII]{\lambda}5007 morphologies. These new, extensive measurements significantly increase the sample of reliable [OIII]{\lambda}5007 fluxes for Galactic bulge PN making it a valuable resource and a prelude to the construction of our new Galactic bulge Planetary Nebula luminosity function (Paper II)., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Recent Halpha surveys such as SHS and IPHAS have improved the completeness of the Galactic planetary nebula (PN) census. We now know of ~3,000 PNe in the Galaxy, but this is far short of most estimates, typically ~25,000 or more for the total population. The size of the Galactic PN population is required to derive an accurate estimate of the chemical enrichment rates of nitrogen, carbon, and helium. In addition, a high PN count (~20,000) is strong evidence that most 1-8 Msun main sequence stars will go through a PN phase, while a low count (<10,000) argues that special conditions (e.g., a close binary interaction) are required to form a PN. We present high resolution FLAMES/VLT spectroscopy of intracluster planetary nebula (ICPN) candidates, targeting three new fields in the Virgo cluster core with surface brightness down to mu_B = 28.5. Based on the projected phase space information we separate the old and 12 newly-confirmed PNs into galaxy and intracluster components. The M87 PNs are confined to the extended stellar envelope of M87, within a projected radius of ~ 160 kpc, while the ICPNs are scattered across the whole surveyed region between M87 and M86. The velocity dispersions determined from the M87 PNs at projected radii of 60 kpc and 144 kpc show that the galaxy's velocity dispersion profile decreases in the outer halo, down to 78 +/- 25 km/s. A Jeans model for the M87 halo stars in the gravitational potential traced by the X-ray emission fits the observed velocity dispersion profile only if the stellar orbits are strongly radially anisotropic (beta ~= 0.4 at r ~= 10 kpc increasing to 0.8 at the outer edge), and if additionally the stellar halo is truncated at ~= 150 kpc average elliptical radius. From the spatial and velocity distribution of the ICPNs we infer that M87 and M86 are falling towards each other and that we may be observing them just before the first close pass. The inferred luminosity-specific PN numbers for the M87 halo and the ICL are in the range of values observed for old (> 10 Gyr) stellar populations (abridged)., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. 16 pages, 14 figures and 4 tables

The line-of-sight velocities and [OIII] 5007 AA expansion velocities are measured for 11 planetary nebulae (PNs) in the Virgo cluster core, at 15 Mpc distance, with the FLAMES spectrograph on the ESO VLT. These PNs are located about halfway between the two giant ellipticals M87 and M86. From the [OIII] 5007 AA line profile widths, the average half-width at half maximum expansion velocity for this sample of 11 PNs is v_HWHM = 16.5 km/s (RMS=2.6 km/s). We use the PN subsample bound to M87 to remove the distance uncertainties, and the resulting [OIII] 5007 AA luminosities to derive the central star masses. We find these masses to be at least 0.6 M_sun and obtain PN observable life times t_PN < 2000 yrs, which imply that the bright PNs detected in the Virgo cluster core are compact, high density nebulae. We describe a search for H-alpha emission-lined stars in M31, M33, and seven dwarfs in or near the Local Group (IC 10, NGC 6822, WLM, Sextans B, Sextans A, Pegasus and the Phoenix dwarf) using interference filter imaging with the KPNO and CTIO 4-m telescope and Mosaic cameras. The survey is aimed primarily at identifying new Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs) from their spectroscopic similarity to known LBVs, avoiding the bias towards photometric variability, which may require centuries to manifest itself if LBVs go through long quiescent periods. Followup spectroscopy with WIYN confirms that our survey detected a wealth of stars whose spectra are similar to the known LBVs. We "classify" the spectra of known LBVs, and compare these to the spectra of the new LBV candidates. We demonstrate spectacular spectral variability for several of the new LBV candidates, such as AM2, previously classified as a Wolf-Rayet star, which now shows FeI, FeII and Balmer emission lines but neither the NIII 4634,42 nor HeII 4686 emission that it did in 1982. Profound spectral changes are also noted for other suspected and known LBVs. Several of the LBV candidates also show >0.5 mag changes in V over the past 10-20 years. The number of known or suspected LBVs is now 24 in M31, 37 in M33, 1 in NGC 6822, and 3 in IC 10. We estimate that the total number of LBVs in M31 and M33 may be several hundred, in contrast to the 8 known historically through large-scale photometric variability. We have obtained UBVRI images with the Kitt Peak and Cerro Tololo 4-m telescopes and Mosaic cameras of seven dwarfs in (or near) the Local Group, all of which have known evidence of recent star formation: IC10, NGC 6822, WLM, Sextans B, Sextans A, Pegasus,and Phoenix. We construct color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of these systems, as well as neighboring regions that can be used to evaluate the degree of foreground contamination by stars in the Milky Way. Inter-comparison of these CMDs with those of M31, M33, the LMC, and the SMC permits us to determine improved reddening values for a typical OB star found within these galaxies. All of the CMDs reveal a strong or modest number of blue supergiants. All but Pegasus and Phoenix also show the clear presence of red supergiants in the CMD, although IC10 appears to be deficient in these objects given its large WR population. The bright stars of intermediate color in the CMD are badly contaminated by foreground stars (30-100%), and considerable spectroscopy is needed before statistics on the yellow supergiants in these systems will be known. We report the results of an [O III] lambda 5007 survey for planetary nebulae (PN) in five galaxies that were hosts of well-observed Type Ia supernovae: NGC 524, NGC 1316, NGC 1380, NGC 1448 and NGC 4526. The goals of this survey are to better quantify the zero-point of the maximum magnitude versus decline rate relation for supernovae Type Ia and to validate the insensitivity of Type Ia luminosity to parent stellar population using the host galaxy Hubble type as a surrogate. We detected a total of 45 planetary nebulae candidates in NGC 1316, 44 candidates in NGC 1380, and 94 candidates in NGC 4526. From these data, and the empirical planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF), we derive distances of 17.9 +0.8/-0.9 Mpc, 16.1 +0.8/-1.1 Mpc, and 13.6 +1.3/-1.2 Mpc respectively. Our derived distance to NGC 4526 has a lower precision due to the likely presence of Virgo intracluster planetary nebulae in the foreground of this galaxy. In NGC 524 and NGC 1448 we detected no planetary nebulae candidates down to the limiting magnitudes of our observations. We present a formalism for setting realistic distance limits in these two cases, and derive robust lower limits of 20.9 Mpc and 15.8 Mpc, respectively. After combining these results with other distances from the PNLF, Cepheid, and Surface Brightness Fluctuations distance indicators, we calibrate the optical and near-infrared relations for supernovae Type Ia and we find that the Hubble constants derived from each of the three methods are broadly consistent, implying that the properties of supernovae Type Ia do not vary drastically as a function of stellar population. We determine a preliminary Hubble constant of H_0 = 77 +/- 3 (random) +/- 5 (systematic) km/s/Mpc for the PNLF, though more nearby galaxies with high-quality observations are clearly needed., Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures. We report on the discovery of a faint (M_V ~ -10.6 +/- 0.2) dwarf spheroidal galaxy on deep F606W and F814W Hubble Space Telescope images of a Virgo intracluster field. The galaxy is easily resolved in our images, as our color magnitude diagram (CMD) extends > 1 magnitude beyond the tip of the red giant branch (RGB). Thus, it is the deepest CMD for a small dwarf galaxy inside a cluster environment. Using the colors of the RGB stars, we derive a metal abundance for the dwarf of [M/H]= -2.3 +/- 0.3, and show that the metallicity dispersion is less than 0.6 dex at 95% confidence. We also use the galaxy's lack of AGB stars and the absence of objects brighter than M_bol ~ -4.1 +/- 0.2 to show that the system is old (t >~10 Gyr). Finally, we derive the object's structural parameters, and show that the galaxy displays no obvious evidence of tidal threshing. Since the tip of the red giant branch distance ((m-M)_0 = 31.23 +/- 0.17 or D = 17.6 +/- 1.4 Mpc) puts the galaxy near the core of the Virgo cluster, one might expect the object to have undergone some tidal processing. Yet the chemical and morphological similarity between the dwarf and the dSph galaxies of the Local and M81 Group demonstrates that the object is indeed pristine, and not the shredded remains of a much larger galaxy. We have used the Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) to detect and measure ~5300 stars in a single intracluster field in the Virgo Cluster. By performing F606W and F814W photometry on these stars, we have determined their metallicity distribution function, and constrained the types of stars present in this portion of Virgo's intracluster space. Based on the small number of stars detected brighter than the red giant branch (RGB) tip, we suggest that in this region, Virgo's intracluster stars are mostly old (>~10 Gyr). Through analysis of the RGB stars themselves, we determine that the population contains the full range of metallicities probed (-2.3<[M/H]<0.0). We also present evidence that the younger (<10 Gyr) component of the population is more metal-rich, with [M/H]>-0.5. The spatial distribution of the most metal-poor stars in the field shows significantly more structure than that of the metal-rich stars, indicating that the intracluster population is not well-mixed. We report the discovery of 4 candidate intracluster globular clusters (IGCs) in a single deep HST ACS field of the Virgo Cluster. We show that each cluster is roughly spherical, has a magnitude near the peak of the Virgo globular cluster luminosity function, has a radial profile that is best-fit by a King model, and is surrounded by an excess of point sources which have the colors and magnitudes of cluster red giant stars. Despite the fact that two of our IGC candidates have integrated colors redder than the mean of the M87 globular cluster system, we propose that all of the objects are metal-poor with [M/H] < -1. We show that the tidal radii of our intracluster globulars are all larger than the mean for Milky Way clusters, and suggest that the clusters have undergone less tidal stress than their Galactic counterparts. Finally, we normalize our globular cluster observations to the luminosity of intracluster stars, and derive a value of S_N ~ 6 for the specific frequency of Virgo intracluster globular clusters. We use these data to constrain the origins of Virgo's intracluster population, and suggest that globular clusters in our intracluster field have a different origin than globular clusters in the vicinity of M87. We present UBVRI photometry obtained from Mosaic images of M31 and M33 using the KPNO 4-m telescope. The survey covers 2.2 sq degrees of M31, and 0.8 sq degrees of M33, chosen so as to include all of the regions currently active in forming massive stars. The catalog contains 371,781 and 146,622 stars in M31 and M33, respectively, where every star has a counterpart (at least) in B, V, and R. We compare our photometry to previous studies. We provide cross references to the stars confirmed as members by spectroscopy, and compare the location of these to the complete set in color-magnitude diagrams. While follow-up spectroscopy is needed for many projects, we demonstrate the success of our photometry in being able to distinguish M31/M33 members from foreground Galactic stars. We also present the results of newly obtained spectroscopy, which identifies 34 newly confirmed members, including B-A supergiants, the earliest O star known in M31, and two new Luminous Blue Variable candidates whose spectra are similar to that of P Cygni., Comment: Accepted by the Astronomical Journal. We investigate the possible progenitors of the planetary nebulae (PNs) which populate the top 0.5 mag of the [O III] 5007 planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF). We show that the absolute luminosity of the PNLF cutoff demands that the central stars of these most luminous planetaries be greater than 0.6 Msun, and that such high-mass PN cores must exist in every galaxy. We also use the bolometric-luminosity specific PN number density to show that in early-type galaxies, [O III]-bright planetaries are relatively rare, with only about 10% of stars evolving to these bright magnitudes. We demonstrate that the combination of these two facts implies that either all early-type systems contain a small, smoothly distributed component of young (< 1 Gyr old) stars, or another mechanism exists for creating high-core mass planetaries. We argue that binary-star evolution is this second mechanism, and demonstrate that blue stragglers have the appropriate core properties and number density to explain the observations. We discuss the implications of this alternative mode of stellar evolution, and speculate on how coalesced binaries might affect the use of PNs for measuring a galaxy's star-formation history and chemical evolution., Comment: 24 pages, including 3 figures; accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

(Abridged) We present the results of variable star searches of the M31 dwarf spheroidal companions Andromeda I and Andromeda III using the Hubble Space Telescope. A total of 100 variable stars were found in Andromeda I, while 56 were found in Andromeda III. One variable found in Andromeda I and another in Andromeda III may be Population II Cepheids. In addition to this variable in Andromeda III, another four variables are anomalous Cepheids. We found 72 fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars and 26 first-overtone mode RR Lyrae stars in Andromdea I giving mean periods of 0.575 day and 0.388 day, respectively. One likely RR Lyrae was not classified. For Andromeda III, 39 RR Lyrae stars are pulsating in the fundamental mode with a mean period of 0.657 day and 12 are in the first-overtone mode with a mean period of 0.402 day. While Andromeda I has a mean period that is consistent with its metallicity, the mean period of the fundamental mode RR Lyrae in Andromeda III is larger than expected. In Andromeda I, we found two RR Lyrae stars which are noticeably fainter than the horizontal branch. We discuss the possibility that these stars are associated with the recently discovered stellar stream in the halo of M31. We find =25.14+/-0.04 mag for Andromeda I resulting in a distance of 765+/-25 kpc. For Andromeda III, =25.01+/-0.04 mag giving a distance of 740+/-20 kpc. We present kinematics of 135 planetary nebulae in M31 from a survey covering 3.9 square degrees and extending out to 15 kpc from the southwest major axis and more than 20 kpc along the minor axis. The majority of our sample, even well outside the disk, shows significant rotational support (mean line-of-sight velocity 116 km/s). We argue that these PN belong to the outer part of M31's large de Vaucouleurs bulge. Only five PN have velocities clearly inconsistent with this fast rotating bulge. All five may belong to tidal streams in M31's outer halo. One is projected on the Northern Spur, and is counter-rotating with respect to the disk there. Two are projected along the major axis at X=-10 kpc and have M32-like velocities; they could be debris from that galaxy. The remaining two halo PN are located near the center of the galaxy and their velocities follow the gradient found by Ibata et al. (2004), implying that these PN could belong to the Southern Stream. Intracluster planetary nebulae are a useful tracer of the evolution of galaxies and galaxy clusters. We analyze our catalog of 318 intracluster planetary nebulae candidates found in 0.89 square degrees of the Virgo cluster. We give additional evidence for the great depth of the Virgo cluster's intracluster stellar population, which implies that the bulk of the intracluster stars come from late-type galaxies and dwarfs. We also provide evidence that the intracluster stars are clustered on the sky on arcminute scales, in agreement with tidal-stripping scenarios of intracluster star production. Although significant systematic uncertainties exist, we find that the average fraction of intracluster starlight in the Virgo is 15.8% +/- 3.0% (statistical) +/- 5.0% (systematic), and may be higher if the intracluster stars have a large spatial line-of-sight depth. We find that the intracluster star density changes little with radius or projected density over the range surveyed. We report the results of a photometric and spectroscopic survey for planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Local Group spiral galaxy M33. We use our sample of 152 PNe to derive an [O III] planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF) distance of (m-M)_0 = 24.86^+0.07-0.11 (0.94^+0.03-0.05 Mpc). Although this value is ~ 15% larger than the galaxy's Cepheid distance, the discrepancy likely arises from differing assumptions about the system's internal extinction. Our photometry (which extends >3 mag down the PNLF), also reveals that the faint-end of M33's PN luminosity function is non-monotonic, with an inflection point ~2 mag below the PNLF cutoff. We argue that this feature is due to the galaxy's large population of high core-mass planetaries, and that its amplitude may eventually be useful as a diagnostic for studies of stellar populations. Fiber-coupled spectroscopy of 140 of the PN candidates confirms that M33's PN population rotates along with the old disk, with a small asymmetric drift of \~ 10km/s. Remarkably, the population's line-of-sight velocity dispersion varies little over ~4 optical disk scale lengths, with sigma_{rad}~20km/s. We show that this is due to a combination of factors, including a decline in the radial component of the velocity ellipsoid at small galactocentric radii, and a gradient in the ratio of the vertical to radial velocity dispersion. We use our data to show that the mass scale length of M33's disk is ~2.3 times larger than that of the system's IR luminosity and that the disk's V-band mass-to-light ratio changes from M/L_V ~0.3 in the galaxy's inner regions to M/L_V ~2.0 at ~9 kpc. Models in which the dark matter is distributed in the plane of the galaxy are excluded by our data. We surveyed the central 4 x 4 degrees of the Galactic center for planetary nebulae in the light of [S III] 9532 A and found 94 PNe that were not previously known, plus 3 that were previously identified as possible candidates. For 63 of these 97 objects, we obtained spectra that are consistent with highly reddened PN while the other 34 could not be recovered spectroscopically and remain unverified. Of the 94 candidates, 54 and 57 were detected via radio at 3 and 6 cm, respectively. An additional 20 PNe candidates were found during follow-up Halpha imaging but have not yet been verified spectroscopically. Based on the properties of IRAS sources in this region of the Galaxy, and on the total luminosity of the Galactic bulge, the expected number of PNe is ~250, only 50 % more than the 160 PNe candidates now known. We present the results from multiple surveys for intracluster planetary nebulae (IPNe) in nearby galaxy clusters and groups. We find that in the case of clusters, our observations imply: 1) the amount of intracluster starlight is significant, up to 20% of the total starlight, 2) the Virgo Cluster is elongated along our line of sight, and 3) the intracluster light is clustered on the sky, implying ongoing tidal stripping. In contrast, searches for IPNe in groups have found little or no intra-group population, implying there may be something in the cluster environment that significantly enhances intracluster star production. (abridged) We present the results of a variable star search in Andromeda II, a dwarf spheroidal galaxy companion to M31, using HST/WFPC2 observations. Seventy-three variables were found, one of which is an anomalous Cepheid while the others are RR Lyrae stars. The anomalous Cepheid has properties consistent with those found in other dwarf spheroidal galaxies. For the RR Lyrae stars, the mean periods are 0.571 day and 0.363 day for the fundamental mode and first-overtone mode stars, respectively. With this fundamental mode mean period and the mean metallicity determined from the red giant branch (<[Fe/H]>=-1.49), Andromeda II follows the period-metallicity relation defined by the Galactic globular clusters and other dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We also find that the properties of the RR Lyrae stars themselves indicate a mean abundance that is consistent with that determined from the red giants. There is, however, a significant spread among the RR Lyrae stars in the period-amplitude diagram, which is possibly related to the metallicity spread in Andromeda II indicated by the width of the red giant branch in Da Costa et al. In addition, the abundance distribution of the RR Lyrae stars is notably wider than the distribution expected from the abundance determination errors alone. The mean magnitude of the RR Lyrae stars, =24.87+/-0.03, implies a distance d=665+/-20 kpc to Andromeda II. We also demonstrate that the specific frequency of anomalous Cepheids in dwarf spheroidal galaxies correlates with the mean metallicity of their parent galaxy, and that the Andromeda II and Andromeda VI anomalous Cepheids appear to follow the same relation as those in the Galactic dwarf spheroidals., Comment: 16 pages, including 10 figures and 5 tables, emulateapj5/apjfonts style. We report the detection of a new satellite of M31, projected close to M32. And VIII is tidally distorted, with length ~10 kpc and width a few kpc. It contains 5-12 planetary nebulae (PNe) and 1-3 globular clusters, and has a velocity of -204 km/s with respect to M31, some 350 km/s away from M32's velocity. There are also about 4 x 10^5 solar masses of HI, well-separated from the disk, at the same position and velocity. The satellite has luminosity of 1.2-2.4 x 10^8 solar luminosities, and a central surface brightness of order \mu_V=24. Both these values are typical of Local Group dwarf galaxies. Its surface brightness is some 6 magnitudes brighter than any of the stellar streams found in the Milky Way or M31. The three associated globular clusters have reddening consistent with foreground reddening from the Milky Way only, making it likely that the satellite is in front of M31, unlike the giant tidal stream of Ibata et al.(2001), which is behind M31 in the SE quadrant. However, the major axis of And VIII is aligned with the western edge of this giant stream, and we suggest that its unusual fan shape is caused by superposition of two streams, the westernmost of which was tidally stripped from And VIII., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures. We report the results of a radial velocity survey of planetary nebulae (PNe) located in the tidal features of the well-known interacting system NGC 5194/95 (M51). We find clear kinematic evidence that M51's northwestern tidal debris consists of two discrete structures which overlap in projection -- NGC 5195's own tidal tail, and diffuse material stripped from NGC 5194. We compare these kinematic data to a new numerical simulation of the M51 system, and show that the data are consistent with the classic ``single passage'' model for the encounter, with a parabolic satellite trajectory and a 2:1 mass ratio. We also comment on the spectra of two unusual objects: a high-velocity PN which may be associated with NGC 5194's halo, and a possible interloping high-redshift galaxy., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures. SBS 1150+599A is a blue stellar object at high galactic latitude discovered in the Second Byurakan Survey. New high-resolution images of SBS 1150+599A are presented, demonstrating that it is very likely to be an old planetary nebula in the galactic halo, as suggested by Tovmassian et al (2001). An H-alpha image taken with the WIYN 3.5-m telescope and its "tip/tilt" module reveals the diameter of the nebula to be 9.2", comparable to that estimated from spectra by Tovmassian et al. Lower limits to the central star temperature were derived using the Zanstra hydrogen and helium methods to determine that the star's effective temperature must be > 68,000K and that the nebula is optically thin. New spectra from the MMT and FLWO telescopes are presented, revealing the presence of strong [Ne V] lambda 3425, indicating that the central star temperature must be > 100,000K. With the revised diameter, new central star temperature, and an improved central star luminosity, we can constrain photoionization models for the nebula significantly better than before. Because the emission-line data set is sparse, the models are still not conclusive. Nevertheless, we confirm that this nebula is an extremely metal-poor planetary nebula, having a value for O/H that is less than 1/100 solar, and possibly as low as 1/500 solar., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures. We report the results of [OIII] lambda 5007 surveys for planetary nebulae (PNe) in NGC 2403, 3115, 3351, 3627, 4258, and 5866. Using on-band/off-band [OIII] and H-alpha images, we identify samples of PNe in these galaxies and derive distances using the planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF). We then combine these measurements with previous data to compare the PNLF, Cepheid, and surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) distance scales. We use a sample of 13 galaxies to show that the absolute magnitude of the PNLF cutoff is fainter in small, low-metallicity systems, but the trend is well modelled theoretically. When this dependence is removed, the scatter between the Cepheid and PNLF distances becomes consistent with the internal errors of the methods and independent of any obvious galaxy parameter. We then use the data to recalibrate the zero point of the PNLF distance scale. We use a sample of 28 galaxies to show that the scatter between the PNLF and SBF distance measurements agrees with that predicted from the techniques' internal errors, and that no systematic trend exists between the distance residuals and stellar population. However, we find the PNLF and SBF methods have a significant scale offset: Cepheid-calibrated PNLF distances are, on average, ~0.3 mag smaller than Cepheid-calibrated SBF distances. We discuss the possible causes of this offset, and suggest that internal extinction in the bulges of the SBF calibration galaxies is the principle cause of the discrepancy. If this is correct, the SBF-based Hubble Constant must be increased by ~7%. We use our distance to NGC 4258 to argue that the short distance scale to the LMC is correct, and that the global Hubble Constant inferred from the HST Key Project should be increased by 8 +/- 3% to H_0 = 78 +/- 7 km/s/Mpc. We have surveyed Andromeda VI, a dwarf spheroidal galaxy companion to M31, for variable stars using F450W and F555W observations obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. A total of 118 variables were found, with 111 being RR Lyrae, 6 anomalous Cepheids, and 1 variable we were unable to classify. We find that the Andromeda VI anomalous Cepheids have properties consistent with those of anomalous Cepheids in other dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We revise the existing period-luminosity relations for these variables. Further, using these and other available data, we show that there is no clear difference between fundamental and first-overtone anomalous Cepheids in a period-amplitude diagram at shorter periods, unlike the RR Lyrae. For the Andromeda VI RR Lyrae, we find that they lie close to the Oosterhoff type I Galactic globular clusters in the period-amplitude diagram, although the mean period of the RRab stars, = 0.588 d, is slightly longer than the typical Oosterhoff type I cluster. The mean V magnitude of the RR Lyrae in Andromeda VI is 25.29+/-0.03, resulting in a distance 815+/-25 kpc on the Lee, Demarque, & Zinn distance scale. This is consistent with the distance derived from the I magnitude of the tip of the red giant branch. Similarly, the properties of the RR Lyrae indicate a mean abundance for Andromeda VI which is consistent with that derived from the mean red giant branch color., Comment: 23 pages, including 13 figures and 6 tables, emulateapj5/apjfonts style. We have used the WFPC2 camera of the Hubble Space Telescope to obtain deep F814W images of a blank field in the Virgo Cluster located 41 arcmin northwest of M87. We perform star counts in that field, and in another Virgo field observed by Ferguson, Tanvir & von Hippel (1998), and show that, when compared to the Hubble Deep Field North and South, the Virgo Cluster contains an excess of objects with magnitudes I > 27. We attribute this excess to a population of intracluster red-giant branch (IC-RGB) stars. By modeling the luminosity function of these stars, we show that the tip of the Virgo RGB is at I = 27.31 +0.27/-0.17 and that the cluster contains a small, but significant, excess of stars that are up to ~1 mag brighter than this tip. If this luminous component is due entirely to stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB), it implies an age for the population of > 2 Gyr; if foreground RGB stars contribute to the luminous tail, then the derived age for the stars is older still. The luminosity function also suggests that most of the intracluster stars are moderately metal-rich (-0.8 < [Fe/H] <-0.2), a result consistent with that expected from stars that have been tidally stripped from intermediate luminosity galaxies. Additionally, a comparison with the planetary nebulae in our field also supports this view, although the existence of a more metal-poor population (from stripped dwarfs) cannot be ruled out. Our derived average surface brightness, mu_I = 27.9 +0.3/-0.5 mag/arcsec^2 for Virgo's diffuse component suggests that intracluster stars contribute 10% to 20% of the cluster's total I-band luminosity., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures included, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present the initial results from an [O III] lambda 5007 survey for intra-group planetary nebulae in the M 81 group of galaxies. A total of 0.36 square degrees of the survey have been analyzed thus far, and a total of four intra-group candidates have been detected. These data allow us to probe the physics of galaxy interactions in small groups, and give us an upper limit for the density of intracluster starlight. We find that the M 81 group has less than 3% of its stars in an intra-group component; this is much less than the fraction found in richer galaxy clusters., Comment: 2 pages, To be published in IAU Symposium 209, Planetary Nebulae. The galaxy pair NGC 5194/95 (M 51) is one of the closest and best known interacting systems. Despite its notoriety, however, many of its features are not well studied. Extending westward from NGC 5195 is a low surface brightness tidal tail, which can only be seen in deep broadband exposures. Our previous [O III] lambda 5007 planetary nebulae (PN) survey of M 51 recovered this tidal tail, and presented us with a opportunity to study the kinematics of a galaxy interaction in progress. We report the results of a spectroscopy survey of the PN, aimed at determining their kinematic properties. We present two pieces of evidence supporting the hypothesis that the bright [OIII] lambda 5007 sources found in Virgo's intracluster space are intracluster planetary nebulae, rather than [OII] lambda 3727 galaxies at z ~ 0.35 or Ly-alpha sources at z ~ 3.13. First, we confirm the nature of five ``overluminous'' [OIII] sources that are postulated to lie in front of M87: by examining the composite spectrum of these objects, we show that the weaker [OIII] line at lambda 4959 is definitely present at a strength ~ 1/3 that of [OIII] lambda 5007. The ratio demonstrates that, at most, only one of the five objects is a background galaxy. We then estimate the surface density of background emission-line objects by conducting a wide-field (0.13 deg^2) search at lambda 5019 for faint emission line sources in a ``blank field'' located well away from any galaxy or cluster. We show that the density of blank field emission-line sources is significantly lower than the density of sources detected between the galaxies of Virgo, but in good agreement with the density of Ly-alpha galaxies found by Hu, Cowie, & McMahon(1998). We observed 64 newly identified galactic bulge planetary nebulae in the radio continuum at 3 and 6 cm with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We present their radio images, positions, flux densities, and angular sizes. The survey appears to have detected a larger ratio of more extended planetary nebulae with low surface brightness than in previous surveys. We calculated their distances according to Van de Steene & Zijlstra (1995). We find that most of the new sample is located on the near side around the galactic center and closer in than the previously known bulge PNe. Based on H-alpha images and spectroscopic data, we calculated the total H-alpha flux. We compare this flux value with the radio flux density and derive the extinction. We confirm that the distribution of the extinction values around the galactic center rises toward the center, as expected., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A
