A new perforated beam screen which optimises the beam aperture and provides enough shielding to adsorb at 60-80 K the collision debris produced at the interaction point in order to protect the superconducting magnets are in production. To comply with machine requirements in terms of beam physics, vacuum and machine protection the new beam screen is designed with tungsten shielding, octagonal aperture and amorphous carbon coating. The insulation vacuum system of the new cryostats will follow the LHC standards.

The funding of FASER (ForwArd Search ExpeRiment) from the Heising-Simons Foundation and the Simons Foundation made it largely possible for FASER to perform its experiments on the LHC. The FASER detector sits in the underground LHC tunnel about 500 meters away from the ATLAS detector. It takes data from the collisions which happen as proton beams pass to collide inside the ATLAS detector. These collisions may create new particles that will go through concrete in the LHC tunnel and thus into the FASER instrument, which will track and measure the progress of their decay. FASER will collect data any time ATLAS is operating. FASER is part of one of the smaller experiments on the LHC.

The dump block core is made of several graphite grades assembled following different manufacturing procedures. The six isostatic Sigrafine blocks are shrink-fitted into the vessel (with a nominal interference of 750 𝜇m), whilst the low density sector (made of Sigraflex® sheets) is loose-fitted and sits inside the vessel with the only contact forces due to gravity. The Sigraflex® sheets are held in place by two HLM Sigrafine® plates which are retained longitudinally by two steel locking rings. These details and the pre-stress generated by the shrink-fitting are important in the dynamics of the dump block and are therefore included in the model.

The LHC's two pilot proton beams were accelerated for the first time to the record energy of 6.8 TeV per beam today during the morning. The operation is part of the beam commissioning of LHC Run 3, scheduled this summer.

Benjamin Moeling, Chargé d’Affaires, is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service. The Vacuum Assembly for eXperimental area, called VAX, are modules composed of different vacuum and instrumentation components that will be installed on the experimental side of ATLAS and CMS after the TAXS absorber, a high radiation area, in the context of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). The mechanisms on each module with new and enhanced remote handling capability of the VAX mock-up, installed in building 186, will be tested there. Here visiting the VAX mock-up are Oliver Bruning, HL-LHC Project Leader, with his deputy Markus Zerlauth, and several other people involved in this part of HL-LHC project.

Particle physicists propose stripped-down ventilator to help combat COVID-19. High Energy Ventilator (HEV) prototype in production in building 21. The design for this novel ventilator was proposed by the LHCb collaboration. The HEV ventilator can be easily manufactured and integrated into the hospital environment to support COVID-19 patients. The unit is designed to support standard ventilator modes of operation, most importantly PRVC (Pressure Regulated Volume Control) and SIMV-PC (Synchronised Intermittent Mandatory Ventilation) modes. The HEV ventilator design is not intended to replace the high-end devices needed for the most intense phase of treatment, but should be appropriate and useful in the hospital environment for milder symptoms or long term care and recovery. HEV will be available as an open source design. The ventilator’s schematics, PCB layout, mechanics and software can be downloaded, used and commercialised for free. The unit is not yet an approved medical device and is in the concept and prototyping stage.

The beam dump is transported from UX65 to its cavern UD62 where the beam dump is located (U = underground and D = dump). Views of the dump as it leaves UX65, its installation in the LHC tunnel, in sector UJ62, and 64) - in the TD tunnel, a transfer tunnel to the beam dump's cavern.

This note proposes the development of a CERN-wide Virtual Visit Service. Such a service would build upon the experience of the LHC Experiments, CERN DG EDU and DG COM, and the expertise of CERN IT CIS, to develop a world-leading communication and educational programme designed to serve the entire community in an effective and economical manner. Administration and Operation of the service would be modelled on the highly successful CERN Visits and Collaboration Services, and would extend the reach of Education, Outreach, and Communication to audiences around the globe, many of who might not have the opportunity to visit the laboratory in person.

SUMMARY In this paper we present a finite element method for the numerical solution of axisymmetric flows. The governing equations of the flow are the axisymmetric Euler equations. We use a streamfunction angular velocity and vorticity formulation of these equations, and we consider the non-stationary and the stationary problems. For industrial applications we have developed a general model which computes the flow past an annular aerofoil and a duct propeller. It is able to take into account jumps of angular velocity and vorticiy in order to model the flow in the presence of a propeller. Moreover, we compute the complete flow around the after-body of a ship and the interaction between a ducted propeller and the stern. In the stationary case we have developed a simple and efficient version of the characteristics/finite element method. Numerical tests have shown that this last method leads to a very fast solver for the Euler equations. The numerical results are in good agreement with experimental data.
