In multilayer organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), 70% of the generated light is lost due to differences in the refractive indices, resulting in total internal reflection. Therefore, external light-extraction films that can easily enhance efficiency are being researched. However, most of these films use petroleum-based polymers, raising waste disposal concerns. Additionally, ultraviolet (UV) light degrades organic materials. Hence, UV protection is essential for mitigating this damage. This study fabricated an eco-friendly external light-extraction film with UV-blocking capabilities using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and sodium lignosulfonate (LS) extracted from plants. The phenolic groups in LS absorb UV light, while the sulfonate groups enhance its hydrophilicity, rendering it soluble in water. Therefore, a simple process was employed by casting a CMC-LS solution onto a microlens-array (MLA) template to fabricate a CMC-LS MLA film. The CMC-LS MLA film achieved 90% transmittance in the visible light range and exhibited excellent UV-blocking capabilities, simultaneously enhancing the lifespan of the OLED and improving the light-extraction efficiency by 30%.

This study utilized cellulose-based external light extraction films to enhance the outcoupling efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). These films were created through a straightforward fabrication employing the biopolymers hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) and tannic acid (TA). We observed that the hydrogen bonding between HEC and TA could spontaneously generate a random microtextured surface on the HEC: TA films. Furthermore, the surface morphology of the HECTA film can be adjusted by varying the TA content. When applying the HECTA films as an external light-extraction layer for OLEDs, we noticed a remarkable improvement in the external quantum efficiency and current efficiency of the OLEDs up to 54% compared to those without the HECTA film. Additionally, the HECTA film displayed an outstanding ability to absorb ultraviolet light. Therefore, it is anticipated that the HECTA film can significantly contribute to prolonging the stability of OLEDs.

Abstract Ensuring a strong bond between chairside autopolymerized acrylic resin to denture base is essential for denture repair and reline procedures. However, there is no established protocol to enhance bond strength between autopolymerizing resin and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) denture base materials. The purpose of this study was to determine shear bond strength of CAD-CAM denture bases and autopolymerizing acrylic resin after mechanical and chemical surface treatments compared with heat-polymerized acrylic resin. Heat-polymerized, milled, and 3-dimensional (3D) printed denture bases were divided into 4 surface treatment protocols: none (control), airborne-particle abrasion (APA), tetrahydrofuran, and Vitacoll application. Autopolymerizing acrylic resin cylinders were bonded to denture surface. Shear bond strength and failure modes were determined after thermocycling. Denture base surfaces were assessed for surface roughness, surface morphology, and microhardness before and after surface treatment. Data was analyzed using two-way ANOVA and multiple comparison tests. The results showed that APA significantly increased shear bond strength and surface roughness of all denture base materials. Tetrahydrofuran and Vitacoll application improved shear bond strength of heat-polymerized acrylic resin, but did not reach the level achieved by APA. Conversely, tetrahydrofuran application improved bond strength of 3D-printed denture to the level of APA. Tetrahydrofuran and Vitacoll application significantly reduced denture base hardness, compared with control and APA. In conclusion, mechanical surface treatment using APA enhances the adhesion of autopolymerizing acrylic resin to heat-polymerized and CAD-CAM denture bases. Tetrahydrofuran and Vitacoll chemical surface treatment improved adhesion to heat-polymerized acrylic resin, with only tetrahydrofuran enhancing bond strength of 3D-printed denture to the level of APA. Without surface treatment, the highest bond strength was shown in 3D-printed denture base material.

PURPOSE Limited studies have analyzed exercise protocols for cognitive improvement in older adults. Therefore, we closely examined the composition, content, and operation methods of these exercise programs to identify current trends. METHODS We searched the Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases for studies published between 2019 and 2024. The search terms used included “older adults”, “cognitive function”, “mild cognitive impairment”, “dementia”, “exercise”, “physical activity”, and other related terms, in both Korean and English. RESULTS Aerobic exercises primarily comprised step-based exercises (walking and stepping) and dance routines, typically lasting 15-60 minutes per session, 1-3 times per week for 6-24 weeks, regardless of the individual's cognitive level. Assistant instructors often participated, and in cases of severe cognitive impairment, patients’ caregivers also participated. Resistance exercises were most often performed using body weight and elastic bands, along with other tools and equipment, such as balls, water bottles, or specialized equipment. The exercises commonly involved 8-12 repetitions, 2-3 sets, with 1-minute rest between sets. Several programs included functional exercises to improve daily living performance. Other activities that were incorporated into the exercise programs included exergames and balance, mind-body, peripheral, and eye exercises. CONCLUSIONS Recent cognitive exercise programs for older adults typically last three months and use a variety of tools or digital technologies within the scope of older adult exercise guidelines. Exercises for people with severe cognitive impairment tend to be more individualized, gradual, and flexible in their approach.

Background: The diagnosis of the culprit allergen depends on exposure, symptoms at exposure, and the presence of specific IgE (sIgE). Pet allergens are sticky and can sensitize individuals without adoption history. Exclusive dog owners frequently exhibit both dog (e5) and cat dander sIgE (e1). We assessed whether the measurement of Fel d 1 sIgE (e94) can discriminate true cat sensitization from false positivity by cross-reactivity in the exclusive dog owners. Methods: Thirty-one patients with respiratory allergies who exclusively owned dogs were enrolled for this study. e5, e1, and e94 were measured with ImmunoCAP. ELISA inhibition was performed to assess cross-reactivity. Results: About 81% of patients (25/31) were both e5 and e1 positive, and 8 were also positive for e94. In the e94 positive, cat dander exhibited higher maximum inhibition of cat sIgE (94% vs 88%) and demonstrated lower IC50 (6.5 vs 737.9 BAU/mL) compared to dog dander. Conversely, in the e94 negative, dog dander demonstrated higher maximum inhibition of cat dander sIgE (71.9% vs 56.2%) and lower IC50 (172 vs 1947 BAU/mL) compared to cat dander. In the e94 positive, dog dander exhibited higher maximal inhibition for dog sIgE (91.5 vs 76.1%) and lower IC50 (10.6 vs 1679 BAU/mL) compared to cat dander, whereas in the e94 negative, the IC50 for cat dander could not be determined. Conclusions: Genuine co-sensitization to cats is notable even in individuals who exclusively own dogs. Positive e94 results could discriminate authentic cat sensitization from false positivity by cross-reactivity in these patients, underscoring the importance of comprehensive allergy assessment.

This study investigates single and multilayer TiAlN/CrN nanocomposite thin films developed using an RF magnetron sputtering system. The TiAlN and CrN layers showed a high degree of orientation, with the (200) peak being the strongest peak in both layers, and a multilayer structure was clearly observed. The surface roughness analysis using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that the TiAlN/CrN coatings had a smoother surface than the single-layer coatings and minimal intermixing between the two layers. Depth-sensing indentation measurements were used to measure the hardness and Young’s modulus of the coatings, demonstrating that TiAlN/CrN coating had the highest hardness (~16.38 GPa) and elastic modulus (~3.82 GPa) among all the coatings studied. This indicates that the TiAlN/CrN multilayer coating possesses superior mechanical properties due to its interface strength. Our findings suggest that these multilayer coatings have potential applications in tribological and decorative coatings.

Abstract Background Obesity is associated with airway hyperresponsiveness and lung fibrosis, which may reduce the effectiveness of standard asthma treatment in individuals suffering from both conditions. Statins and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin-9 inhibitors not only reduce serum cholesterol, free fatty acids but also diminish renin-angiotensin system activity and exhibit anti-inflammatory effects. These mechanisms may play a role in mitigating lung pathologies associated with obesity. Methods Male C57BL/6 mice were induced to develop obesity through high-fat diet for 16 weeks. Conditional TGF-β1 transgenic mice were fed a normal diet. These mice were given either atorvastatin or proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin-9 inhibitor (alirocumab), and the impact on airway hyperresponsiveness and lung pathologies was assessed. Results High-fat diet-induced obesity enhanced airway hyperresponsiveness, lung fibrosis, macrophages in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and pro-inflammatory mediators in the lung. These lipid-lowering agents attenuated airway hyperresponsiveness, macrophages in BALF, lung fibrosis, serum leptin, free fatty acids, TGF-β1, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-17a in the lung. Furthermore, the increased RAS, NLRP3 inflammasome, and cholecystokinin in lung tissue of obese mice were reduced with statin or alirocumab. These agents also suppressed the pro-inflammatory immune responses and lung fibrosis in TGF-β1 over-expressed transgenic mice with normal diet. Conclusions Lipid-lowering treatment has the potential to alleviate obesity-induced airway hyperresponsiveness and lung fibrosis by inhibiting the NLRP3 inflammasome, RAS and cholecystokinin activity. Background: Several biologics have been developed and used to treat severe asthma. However, commercialized biologics have limitations in treating T2-low asthma because their main target is the T2 inflammation marker. Therefore, there is an unmet need for treating T2-low severe asthma. Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase-interacting multifunctional protein 1 (AIMP1) is an auxiliary protein in the mammalian multi-aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase complex. AIMP1 also acts as a cytokine and induces the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines. Since anti-AIMP1 has been shown to reduce interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, and IL-17A levels in a mouse model, it could be effective in the treatment of T2-low severe asthma. Methods: Wild-type BALB/c mice were sensitized and challenged with intranasal inoculation of a crude HDM extract. Atliximab, a chimeric AIMP1 antibody, was administered once (20 μg, 40 μg, 100 μg) on Day 14. We evaluated airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), performed cellular analyses of the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), measured inflammatory cytokine levels, and examined peribronchial histological features. Results: Atliximab reduced AIMP1 levels in asthmatic mice in a dose-dependent manner. AHR and Inflammatory cells such as neutrophils and eosinophils in the BALF decreased in asthmatic mice treated with atliximab. The levels of IL-6, IL-13, and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) in the lung tissue decreased in asthmatic mice treated with a high dose of atliximab (100 μg). Atliximab also reduced goblet cell hyperplasia and peribronchial fibrosis. Conclusions: Atliximab improved asthmatic airway inflammation including neutrophilic inflammation in HDM-induced asthma mice. These data suggest that anti-AIMP1 plays an important role in the treatment of severe T2-low asthma.

This study investigated the charge injection and accumulation characteristics of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) generated by spontaneous orientation polarization (SOP) of organic molecules. SOP enhances the electrical characteristics of OLED devices, such as charge injection and transport, by adjusting the interfacial charge density between the organic layers within the device. An OLED device with a mixed co-host emitting layer was fabricated to examine the degradation effect of SOP after electrical aging. Impedance spectroscopy (IS) revealed the presence of interfacial charges originating from the SOP of small molecules within the electron transport layer (ETL), in both pristine and aged devices. Furthermore, the IS simulation results using equivalent circuits were successfully interpreted based on the electrical properties of each organic layer in the pristine and aged devices. The electrical properties of the ETL, which contained 1,3,5-tris(N-phenyl benzimidazole-2-yl)benzene (TPBi), were degraded, reducing hole accumulation and electron injection.

Abstract Semi-infinite single-atom-thick graphene is an ideal reinforcing material that can simultaneously improve the mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of matrix. Here, we present a float-stacking strategy to accurately align the monolayer graphene reinforcement in polymer matrix. We float graphene-poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) membrane (GPM) at the water–air interface, and wind-up layer-by-layer by roller. During the stacking process, the inherent water meniscus continuously induces web tension of the GPM, suppressing wrinkle and folding generation. Moreover, rolling-up and hot-rolling mill process above the glass transition temperature of PMMA induces conformal contact between each layer. This allows for pre-tension of the composite, maximizing its reinforcing efficiency. The number and spacing of the embedded graphene fillers are precisely controlled. Notably, we accurately align 100 layers of monolayer graphene in a PMMA matrix with the same intervals to achieve a specific strength of about 118.5 MPa g−1 cm3, which is higher than that of lightweight Al alloy, and a thermal conductivity of about 4.00 W m−1 K−1, which is increased by about 2,000 %, compared to the PMMA film.

Abstract Current soft neural probes are still operated by bulky, rigid electronics mounted to a body, which deteriorate the integrity of the device to biological systems and restrict the free behavior of a subject. We report a soft, conformable neural interface system that can monitor the single-unit activities of neurons with long-term stability. The system implements soft neural probes in the brain, and their subsidiary electronics which are directly printed on the cranial surface. The high-resolution printing of liquid metals forms soft neural probes with a cellular-scale diameter and adaptable lengths. Also, the printing of liquid metal-based circuits and interconnections along the curvature of the cranium enables the conformal integration of electronics to the body, and the cranial circuit delivers neural signals to a smartphone wirelessly. In the in-vivo studies using mice, the system demonstrates long-term recording (33 weeks) of neural activities in arbitrary brain regions. In T-maze behavioral tests, the system shows the behavior-induced activation of neurons in multiple brain regions.

Abstract BackgroundAcute kidney injury (AKI) is a marker of clinical deterioration and renal toxicity. While there are many studies offering prediction models for the early detection of AKI, those predicting AKI occurrence using distributed research network (DRN)–based time series data are rare. ObjectiveIn this study, we aimed to detect the early occurrence of AKI by applying an interpretable long short-term memory (LSTM)–based model to hospital electronic health record (EHR)–based time series data in patients who took nephrotoxic drugs using a DRN. MethodsWe conducted a multi-institutional retrospective cohort study of data from 6 hospitals using a DRN. For each institution, a patient-based data set was constructed using 5 drugs for AKI, and an interpretable multivariable LSTM (IMV-LSTM) model was used for training. This study used propensity score matching to mitigate differences in demographics and clinical characteristics. Additionally, the temporal attention values of the AKI prediction model’s contribution variables were demonstrated for each institution and drug, with differences in highly important feature distributions between the case and control data confirmed using 1-way ANOVA. ResultsThis study analyzed 8643 and 31,012 patients with and without AKI, respectively, across 6 hospitals. When analyzing the distribution of AKI onset, vancomycin showed an earlier onset (median 12, IQR 5-25 days), and acyclovir was the slowest compared to the other drugs (median 23, IQR 10-41 days). Our temporal deep learning model for AKI prediction performed well for most drugs. Acyclovir had the highest average area under the receiver operating characteristic curve score per drug (0.94), followed by acetaminophen (0.93), vancomycin (0.92), naproxen (0.90), and celecoxib (0.89). Based on the temporal attention values of the variables in the AKI prediction model, verified lymphocytes and calcvancomycin ium had the highest attention, whereas lymphocytes, albumin, and hemoglobin tended to decrease over time, and urine pH and prothrombin time tended to increase. ConclusionsEarly surveillance of AKI outbreaks can be achieved by applying an IMV-LSTM based on time series data through an EHR-based DRN. This approach can help identify risk factors and enable early detection of adverse drug reactions when prescribing drugs that cause renal toxicity before AKI occurs.

Background: Few studies have evaluated the comparative efficacy of biologics for asthma. This network meta-analysis aimed to compare the efficacy of biologics. Methods: This study included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the efficacy of a biologic compared to a placebo or another biologic in patients with inadequately controlled asthma despite high-intensity treatment, published by January 6, 2022. Two researchers independently searched the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus and assessed the risk of bias using the Cochrane tool. The outcomes of interest were the annual asthma exacerbation rate (AER), forced expiratory volume per second before bronchodilator use (preBD FEV1), the asthma control questionnaire (ACQ), and asthma quality of life questionnaire (AQLQ) results. A frequentist network meta-analysis was conducted, and a random effects model was used to draw pooled incidence rate ratio or standardized mean differences. Results: Twenty-three RCTs with 8376 participants were retrieved. All biologics included in this study were associated with significantly better effects than placebo in AER, preBD FEV1, and ACQ outcomes. Although there were no significant differences between the biologics in the overall study population, patients with eosinophil levels ≥300 cells/μL or eosinophilic asthma showed that dupilumab and tezepelumab were significantly better than anti-IL-5 biologics in improving preBD FEV1. Additionally, in patients with eosinophil levels ≥300 cells/μL, benralizumab, unlike reslizumab, performed significantly better than placebo in improving ACQ and AQLQ outcomes. Conclusion: The comparative effects of biologics can be considered with phenotypes and biomarkers to help clinicians select an appropriate treatment for inadequately controlled asthma.

The chemical and structural characteristics of solution-processed polymer with intrinsic microporosity (PIM) based on 9, 9-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) fluorene (BHPF) film is investigated. A fully flexible and transparent PIM film exhibiting uniform and high transmittance of more than 90% within the visible light range is demonstrated. The stability of the PIM film is further demonstrated with relatively stable coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) characteristics. Additionally, the film has high heat resistance that can withstand high-temperature processes at 250 °C. The PIM film exhibits a remarkably high glass transition temperature ([Formula: see text] of 294.7 °C, indicating the thermal stability of the film at elevated temperatures. The PIM film also exhibits relatively high surface energy, low surface roughness ([Formula: see text]), and peak-to-valley values of 0.45 and 4.4 nm, respectively. This surface morphology confirms the PIM film’s superior characteristic in preventing short circuits or leakage in current paths in an organic electronic device. Finally, the PIM film is successfully tested as a substrate for a bottom-emitting organic light-emitting diode (OLED). The investigation has proven PIM film to be a good candidate to be adopted as a substrate in fabricating advanced organic electronic devices and next-generation displays.

Abstract Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the antibacterial effect and biocompatibility of silver coatings via aerosol deposition on titanium and zirconia surfaces. Methods The surfaces of titanium and zirconia specimens were polished and coated with silver via aerosol deposition. After silver coating, the elemental composition, surface roughness and amount of silver released from the coated surfaces were measured. The bacterial growth on the silver-coated surfaces was investigated via crystal violet assay after incubation with Streptococcus gordonii for 24 h, Fusobacterium nucleatum for 72 h and Porphyromonas gingivalis for 48 h. Human gingival fibroblasts and mouse preosteoblasts were also cultured on the silver-coated specimens to examine the biocompatibility of the coating. Results After silver coating via aerosol deposition, the surface roughness increased significantly, and the released silver ranged from 0.067 to 0.110 ppm. The tested bacteria formed significantly less biofilm on the silver-coated titanium surfaces than on the uncoated titanium surfaces. In contrast, biofilm formation on the silver-coated zirconia surfaces was greater than that on the uncoated zirconia surfaces. Human gingival fibroblasts and mouse preosteoblasts proliferated on the silver-coated surfaces without significant differences from the uncoated surfaces. Conclusions Silver coating via aerosol deposition provided an antibacterial effect against oral bacteria on titanium surfaces, whereas it promoted more bacterial growth on zirconia surfaces. The proliferation of fibroblasts and osteoblasts was not significantly affected by the silver coating on both titanium and zirconia surfaces.

Abstract Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may be linked with oral health issues. This study evaluated the associations between OSA, dental pain, and chewing discomfort. Big data from a nationwide survey involving 6984 participants aged ≥ 40 years were analyzed. The STOP-Bang questionnaire was used to assess the OSA risk, categorizing the participants into low-, intermediate-, and high-risk groups. The associations of OSA risk with dental pain and chewing discomfort were evaluated using multivariate logistic regression analyses (α = 0.05). Results revealed that 50.33%, 37.50%, and 12.17% of the population belonged to the low-, intermediate-, and high-risk groups, respectively. After adjusting for covariates, a significant association emerged between OSA risk and dental pain, with adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of 1 (reference), 1.208 (1.003–1.455), and 1.472 (1.131–1.916) for the low-, intermediate-, and high-risk groups, respectively (p = 0.0156). The adjusted odds ratio for chewing discomfort in the high-risk OSA group was 1.307 (0.977–1.748), although not significantly different from that of the low-risk group (p > 0.05). A high risk of OSA was associated with 1.472-fold increased risk of dental pain compared to those at low risk, implicating OSA as a potential risk indicator of poor oral health.

Objectives The objective of this study was to develop and validate a multicenter-based, multi-model, time-series deep learning model for predicting drug-induced liver injury (DILI) in patients taking angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). The study leveraged a national-level multicenter approach, utilizing electronic health records (EHRs) from six hospitals in Korea. Methods A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted using EHRs from six hospitals in Korea, comprising a total of 10,852 patients whose data were converted to the Common Data Model. The study assessed the incidence rate of DILI among patients taking ARBs and compared it to a control group. Temporal patterns of important variables were analyzed using an interpretable time-series model. Results The overall incidence rate of DILI among patients taking ARBs was found to be 1.09%. The incidence rates varied for each specific ARB drug and institution, with valsartan having the highest rate (1.24%) and olmesartan having the lowest rate (0.83%). The DILI prediction models showed varying performance, measured by the average area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, with telmisartan (0.93), losartan (0.92), and irbesartan (0.90) exhibiting higher classification performance. The aggregated attention scores from the models highlighted the importance of variables such as hematocrit, albumin, prothrombin time, and lymphocytes in predicting DILI. Conclusions Implementing a multicenter-based time-series classification model provided evidence that could be valuable to clinicians regarding temporal patterns associated with DILI in ARB users. This information supports informed decisions regarding appropriate drug use and treatment strategies.

Background/purpose: Dental implants are inevitably exposed to bacteria in oral cavity. Understanding the colonization of bacteria on implant surface is necessary to prevent bacteria-related inflammation surrounding dental implants. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of surface properties on biofilm formation on the implant surface. Materials and methods: One early colonizer, Streptococcus gordonii (S. gordonii), and two late colonizers, Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) and Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis), were grown on the titanium and zirconia surfaces with two types of surface roughness for 24 and 72 h. Each bacterial biofilm on specimens was quantified using crystal violet assay and observed by scanning electron microscopy. Results: S. gordonii formed more biofilm on the titanium surface than zirconia at the same roughness and more biofilm on the rough surface than smooth one of the same materials at 24 and 72 h of incubation. F. nucleatum adhered on all the surfaces at 24 h and proliferated actively on the surfaces except smooth zirconia at 72 h. P. gingivalis proliferated vigorously on the surfaces at 72 h while it scarcely adhered at 24 h. There was no consistent correlation between contact angle and biofilm formation of the three bacteria. Conclusion: The three bacteria proliferated most on the rough titanium surface and least on the smooth zirconia surface. In addition, the proliferation was affected by the bacterial species as well as the surface properties.

Abstract Background Particulate matter10 (PM10) can induce airway inflammation and fibrosis. Recently, chitinase-1 has been shown to play key roles in inflammation and fibrosis. We aimed to investigate the effects of chitinase-1 inhibitor in PM10-treated murine mice models. Methods In female BALB/c mice, PM10 was intranasally administered six times over 3 weeks, and ovalbumin (OVA) was intraperitoneally injected and then intranasally administered. Chitinase-1 inhibitor (CPX) 6 times over 3 weeks or dexamethasone 3 times in the last week were intraperitoneally administered. Two days after the last challenges, mice were euthanized. Messenger RNA sequencing using lung homogenates was conducted to evaluate signaling pathways. Results PM10 and/or OVA-induced airway inflammation and fibrosis murine models were established. CPX and dexamethasone ameliorated PM10 or PM10/OVA-induced airway hyper-responsiveness, airway inflammation, and fibrosis. CPX and dexamethasone also reduced levels of various inflammatory markers in lung homogenates. PM10 and OVA also induced changes in mRNA expression across an extreme range of genes. CPX and dexamethasone decreased levels of mRNA expression especially associated with inflammation and immune regulation. They also significantly regulated asthma and asthma-related pathways, including the JACK-STAT signaling pathway. Conclusions Chitinase-1 suppression by CPX can regulate PM10- and OVA-induced and aggravated airway inflammation and fibrosis via an asthma-related signaling pathway.

In this paper, we propose the application of an optical property-enhancement film that complements the angular dependence and total reflection of top-emitting organic light-emitting diodes (TEOLEDs). The optical property-enhancement film is composed of a porous pyramid arrangement applied on a thin-film encapsulation layer of TEOLEDs and is applied to distribute the transmitted light evenly. The results confirm that the change in the electroluminescence spectrum for each angle was effectively reduced because the TEOLEDs demonstrated uniform light distribution. In addition, reducing the total internal reflection in the film structure made it possible to improve the external quantum efficiency by approximately 35% and current efficiency by 38%.

We present an n-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) polymer and its application in n-type oxide thin-film transistors (OxTFTs) as a source and drain electrode material. A reduced molecule of a cationic dye, methyl red (MR), was used as an effective solution-processed n-type dopant. The sequential de-doping and doping of the initially p-doped PEDOT:PSS polymer with the reduced MR (r-MR) effectively removed positive charges via cancellation by the added electrons. As a result, the electron conductivity of PEDOT:PSS increased from 3.4 S/cm to ∼51 S/cm, while its work function decreased from 4.8 eV to 3.5 eV. This is one of the lowest values of the work function reported for PEDOT:PSS. The n-doped PEDOT:PSS films were eventually applied as a suitable material to fabricate the contact electrodes of solution-processed bottom-gate top-contact amorphous indium-gallium-zinc oxide-based OxTFTs. The resultant devices exhibited electron mobility over ten times better compared to those with undoped PEDOT:PSS electrodes. Therefore, we suggest this method as a highly suitable and low-cost technique for improving electron transport in PEDOT:PSS and all solution-processed conductors. Further investigations with this method are expected to expand the application of PEDOT:PSS to other sectors of optoelectronics.

Abstract Upon withdrawal of propacetamol, an injectable formulation of the paracetamol prodrug, in Europe due to safety concerns, South Korea’s regulatory body requested a post-marketing surveillance study exploring its safety profile. We characterized regional disparities in adverse events (AE) associated with propacetamol between Asia and Europe using the World Health Organization’s pharmacovigilance database, VigiBase. We performed disproportionality analyses using reporting odds ratios (rOR) and information component (IC) to determine whether five AEs (anaphylaxis, Stevens–Johnson syndrome, thrombosis, contact dermatitis/eczema, injection site reaction [ISR]) were associated with propacetamol versus non-propacetamol injectable antipyretics in Asia and Europe, separately. In Asia, there was a high reporting ratio of propacetamol-related ISR (rOR 5.72, 95% CI 5.19–6.31; IC025 1.27), satisfying the signal criteria; there were no reports of thrombosis and contact dermatitis/eczema. Two signals were identified in Europe, with higher reporting ratios for thrombosis (rOR 7.45, 95% CI 5.19–10.71; IC025 1.92) and contact dermatitis/eczema (rOR 16.73, 95% CI 12.48–22.42; IC025 2.85). Reporting ratios of propacetamol-related anaphylaxis were low for Asia and Europe. While signals were found for thrombosis and contact dermatitis/eczema in Europe, these were not detected in Asia. These findings suggest potential ethnic differences in propacetamol-related AEs between Asia and Europe, which could serve as supportive data for future decision-making.

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have attracted intense interest; however, despite the considerable effort of researchers, a universal manufacturing method that can guarantee both high material quality and throughput has not been realized to date. Herein, a universal approach to producing high‐quality monolayer TMDCs on a large scale via germanium (Ge)‐mediated atomic spalling is presented. Through the modified analytic model, the study verifies that the thin Ge film could be a suitable stressor that effectively reduces the crack propagation depth at the sub‐nanometer range. In particular, an acid‐etching process is not required in the overall atomic spalling process due to the water‐soluble nature of the Ge, enabling it widely applicable to various TMDCs. Under the optimized spalling conditions, a millimeter‐sized monolayer of stable MoS2, as well as unstable MoTe2, is successfully achieved. Through detailed spectroscopic and electrical characterizations, it is confirmed that the proposed methodology for obtaining large‐area atomic layers does not introduce any significant structural defects or chemical contaminations.

We present the fluorinated hexaazatrinaphthylene derivative, 1,2,3,4,7,8,9,10,13,14,15,16-dodecafluoro-5,6,11,12,17,18-hexaazatrinaphthylene (HATNA-F12), as a new material to replace another hexaazatrinaphthylene molecule, 1,4,5,8,9,11-hexaazatriphenylene-hexacarbonitrile (HAT-CN), which is widely used as an intermediate connector and charge generation layer (CGL) in tandem organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Upon comparison with the reference single emitting layer unit OLED, the tandem device with HATNA-F12 CGL had improved current efficiency and external quantum efficiency of 42.1% and 41.7%, respectively. Our results show that HATNA-F12 is an excellent substitute for HAT-CN and has more promising characteristics as a CGL material for applications in tandem OLEDs. When compared to devices with HAT-CN CGL, the green tandem OLEDs with CGL consisting of HATNA-F12 demonstrated improved current efficiency, power efficacy, and external quantum efficiency values, while the change of the CGL material had almost no effect on the operating voltage, current density, and color coordinates of the OLEDs. We confirm that using the newly suggested HATNA-F12 molecule as a CGL in these OLEDs can enhance device efficiency.

Background: The craniocervical flexion test (CCFT) was developed for the activation and en-durance of deep cervical flexors. However, the muscle thickness and muscle thickness chang-ing ratio of the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and deep cervical flexor (DCF) muscles in subjects with and without forward head posture (FHP) have not been reported.Objects: To determine the difference in thickness of the SCM and DCF muscles and the differ-ence in the muscle thickness changing ratio between SCM, DCF, and DCF/SCM 20 mmHg and DCF/SCM 30 mmHg between subjects with and without FHP.Methods: Thirty subjects with and without FHP were enrolled. The muscle thickness of the SCM and DCF was measured when maintained at a baseline pressure of 20 mmHg and a maxi-mum pressure of 30 mmHg using a pressure biofeedback unit during the CCFT. Ultrasonog-raphy was used to capture images of SCM and DCF muscle thickness during the CCFT, which was calculated using the picture archiving and communication system (PACS). Results: We observed a significant difference within the pressure main effect between SCM and DCF at a baseline pressure of 20 mmHg and a maximum pressure of 30 mmHg (p < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the muscle thickness and muscle thickness changing ratio for SCM and DCF during CCFT between subjects with and without FHP.Conclusion: There was no significant difference in the muscle thickness recruitment pattern during CCFT in posture changes between subjects with and without FHP.

Summary: Here, we present a protocol for preparing layer-engineered van der Waals (vdW) materials via an atomic spalling process. We describe steps for fixing bulk crystals and introduce the appropriate stressor materials. We then detail a deposition technique for internal stress regulation of stressor film, followed by layer-engineered atomic-scale spalling to exfoliate vdW materials with a controlled number of layers from bulk crystals. Background: Rapid advancements in research and development related to nanomedical technology raise various ethical and legal challenges in areas relevant to disease detection, diagnosis, and treatment. This study aims to outline the existing literature, covering issues associated with emerging nanomedicine and related clinical research, and identify implications for the responsible advancement and integration of nanomedicine and nanomedical technology throughout medical networks in the future.Methods: A scoping review, designed to cover scientific, ethical, and legal literature associated with nanomedical technology, was conducted, generating and analyzing 27 peer-reviewed articles published between 2007–2020.Results: Results indicate that articles referencing ethical and legal issues related to nanomedical technology were concerned with six key areas: 1) harm exposure and potential risks to health, 2) consent to nano-research, 3) privacy, 4) access to nanomedical technology and potential nanomedical therapies, 5) classification of nanomedical products in relation to the research and development of nanomedical technology, and 6) the precautionary principle as it relates to the research and development of nanomedical technology.Conclusion: This review of the literature suggests that few practical solutions are comprehensive enough to allay the ethical and legal concerns surrounding research and development in fields related to nanomedical technology, especially as it continues to evolve and contribute to future innovations in medicine. It is also clearly apparent that a more coordinated approach is required to ensure global standards of practice governing the study and development of nanomedical technology, especially as discussions surrounding the regulation of nanomedical research throughout the literature are mainly confined to systems of governance in the United States.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have received more interest for their potential role in future electronic and optoelectronic applications. Unlike other TMDs, Rhenium diselenide (ReSe _2 ) stands out for its distinctive anisotropic growth characteristics. These unique features arise from its low lattice symmetry and interlayer decoupling, this has sparked significant interest among researchers. Previous research has indicated the presence of various growth patterns, including dendritic formations and structures resembling flowers. In this study, we effectively produced ReSe _2 using the ‘Tilting Boat’ method to achieve growth on a 21 μ m scale. Through precise manipulation of the growth conditions, we successfully attained flakes of 21 μ m scale in comparison to prior findings. Moreover, we successfully produced a variety of shapes, including triangles, diamonds, and hexagons, on 1 × 1 cm ^2 Si/SiO _2 substrates. Furthermore, we achieved the successful production of a continuous ReSe _2 film on a 1 × 3 cm ^2 Al _2 O _3 substrate. We verified the distinct anisotropic properties of ReSe _2 via Raman Spectroscopy. Furthermore, we acquired three-dimensional visual representations of ReSe _2 flakes and continuous films via SEM measurements. By employing EDS data and analysing x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra, we have established a compositional ratio of 1:2 for Re and Se, which aligns with the MX _2 structure. This confirmation indicates the successful synthesis of high-quality ReSe _2 flakes.

In this paper, we demonstrate the use of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) imprinted with a microlens array (MLA) via solution process to improve the outcoupling efficiency of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). The PDLC, well known for its scattering effect, is an excellent technology for improving the outcoupling efficiency of OLEDs. Additionally, we introduce a simple spin-coating process to fabricate PDLC which is adaptable for future solution-processed OLEDs. The MLA-imprinted PDLC applied OLED shows an enhancement factor of 1.22 in outcoupling efficiency which is a 37.5% increase compared to the existing PDLC techniques without changing the electrical properties of the OLED. Through this approach, we can expect the roll-to-roll based extremely flexible OLED, and with further research on pattering PDLC by various templates, higher outcoupling efficiency is achievable through a simple UV irradiation process.

Abstract CRISPR/Cas systems offer a powerful sensing mechanism to transduce sequence‐specific information into amplified analytical signals. However, performing multiplexed CRISPR/Cas assays remains challenging and often requires complex approaches for multiplexed assays. Here, a hydrogel‐based CRISPR/Cas12 system termed CLAMP (Cas‐Loaded Annotated Micro‐Particles) is described. The approach compartmentalizes the CRISPR/Cas reaction in spatially‐encoded hydrogel microparticles (HMPs). Each HMP is identifiable by its face code and becomes fluorescent when target DNA is present. The assay is further streamlined by capturing HMPs inside a microfluidic device; the captured particles are then automatically recognized by a machine‐learning algorithm. The CLAMP assay is fast, highly sensitive (attomolar detection limits with preamplification), and capable of multiplexing in a single‐pot assay. As a proof‐of‐concept clinical application, CLAMP is applied to detect nucleic acid targets of human papillomavirus in cervical brushing samples.

A straightforward digital method of evaluating wear volume loss is described. This method allows the measurement of the wear by analyzing only the three-dimensional scan dataset of the worn specimen without needing a separate baseline scan. Compared to the conventional method, involving superimposition of the two datasets scanned before and after the wear test, this method can reduce labor and accuracy errors caused by repeated scans and superimposition procedures. Further, this analysis can be conducted using free computer-aided design software, which makes it more efficient for the analysis of wear volume loss of restorative materials.

Abstract Effects of implant angulation on digital implant impression accuracy remain controversial. Therefore, this in vitro study aimed to compare the digital implant impression trueness among models with different implant angulations and scan body materials. Six partially edentulous mandibular models with dental implants on the right second premolar and second molar areas were categorized according to the implant angulation of the distal implant (parallel, or 15° mesially or lingually tilted compared to the mesial implant) and scan body materials (polyetheretherketone or titanium). After scanning each model with intraoral scanners, the root mean square and within-tolerance values were calculated with respect to the reference, and nonparametric statistical tests were performed (α = .05). Background: Tiotropium, a long-acting muscarinic antagonist, is recommended for add-on therapy to inhaled corticosteroids (ICS)-long-acting beta 2 agonists (LABA) for severe asthma. However, real-world studies on the predictors of response to tiotropium are limited. We investigated the real-world use of tiotropium in asthmatic adult patients in Korea and we identified predictors of positive response to tiotropium add-on. Methods: We performed a multicenter, retrospective, cohort study using data from the Cohort for Reality and Evolution of Adult Asthma in Korea (COREA). We enrolled asthmatic participants who took ICS-LABA with at least 2 consecutive lung function tests at 3-month intervals. We compared tiotropium users and non-users, as well as tiotropium responders and non-responders to predict positive responses to tiotropium, defined as 1) increase in forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) ≥ 10% or 100 mL; and 2) increase in asthma control test (ACT) score ≥3 after 3 months of treatment. Results: The study included 413 tiotropium users and 1756 tiotropium non-users. Tiotropium users had low baseline lung function and high exacerbation rate, suggesting more severe asthma. Clinical predictors for positive response to tiotropium add-on were 1) positive bronchodilator response (BDR) [odds ratio (OR) = 6.8, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.6–47.4, P = 0.021] for FEV1 responders; 2) doctor-diagnosed asthma-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease overlap (ACO) [OR = 12.6, 95% CI: 1.8–161.5, P = 0.024], and 3) initial ACT score

Nicotine, an abundant molecule in tobacco, has immunomodulatory effects on inflammatory diseases, primarily due to the activation of alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7 nAChR). We aim to evaluate the expression of the α7 nAChR+ cells in joint tissue and the effect of smoking on immune cells and peripheral arthritis in curdlan-administered SKG mice, a murine model of spondyloarthropathy (SpA). The SKG mice were injected with curdlan two times at 2-week intervals and were divided into two groups; one exposed to cigarette smoke and the other not exposed. We found that the α7 nAChR+ cells increased in the joint tissue of curdlan-administered SKG mice compared to in the wild type. Furthermore, the peripheral arthritis scores and histological scores for synovial inflammation were lower in smoke-exposed curdlan-administered SKG mice than in mice not exposed to smoke. Immunofluorescence staining of the α7 nAChR+ and IL-17A+ cells was lower in the synovia of smoke-exposed mice than the control mice. The proportions of α7 nAChR+IL-17A+ and α7 nAChR+IL-17A+FOXP3+ cells also decreased in the synovia of smoke-exposed mice compared with the controls. We observed an increase in the α7 nAChR+ cells within the joint tissue of curdlan-administered SKG mice and that cigarette smoke had an influence on both peripheral arthritis and immune cell population, especially α7 nAChR+ cells. Thus, exposure to cigarette smoke after arthritogenic stimuli may have an anti-arthritogenic effect in curdlan-administered SKG mice.

The transmittance of the p-doped hole transporting layer (p-HTL) and the charge generation layer (p-CGL) corresponding to the photoluminescence (PL) of blue dopants in an emitting layer decreases as the ratio of the p-dopant increases due to the absorption of the p-dopant. However, there was little difference in the luminous efficiency of blue top-emitting organic light-emitting diodes using p-HTL or p-CGL at a maximum doping ratio of 20%. p-HTL for a single structure required a 5% doping ratio to ensure sufficient electrical characteristics, but p-CGL for the two-stack tandem structure required more than a 10% doping ratio. The optical simulation showed that the device was affected by the specific absorbance of the p-dopant depending on the doping ratio and thickness. Although there was no significant difference in efficiency depending on the doping ratio at a thickness of 10 nm, the reduction rate of the external quantum efficiency increased from over 20 nm due to the doping ratio.

Abstract Background The Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) has launched the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Quality Assessment Program (CQAP) since 2014. We aimed to reveal the influence of this national program on clinical outcomes and the burden of COPD in Korea. Methods The CQAP is conducted annually. We used healthcare claims data linked with the results of the program provided by HIRA between May 2014 and April 2017. Patients were considered to have COPD if they visited a hospital for COPD management during the assessment term. Those who visited a medical institution for COPD and were prescribed COPD medications at least twice were assessed by the CQAP (assessed subjects, AS; not-assessed subjects, NAS). CQAP evaluated the pulmonary function test conduction rate, regular visitation rate, and prescription rates of COPD medications. Results Among the 560,000 patients with COPD, about 140,000 were assessed by the CQAP annually. In both groups, the pulmonary function test conduction rate and inhaled bronchodilator prescription rate improved since 2014. Compared to the NAS group, the risk of admission and all-cause mortality rate in the AS group were significantly reduced by 21.2% and 40.7%, respectively. In patients who were assessed for 3 consecutive years, all of the above variables were high at baseline and were not improved much from implementation of CQAP. In matching analysis, we observed this improvement to be limited in the COPD quality assessment year. Conclusions The CQAP by the health insurance bureau has improved the management protocol and prognosis of COPD.

Reported herein are solution-processed polymer anode electrodes for blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs). The highly conductive anodes were made from 10-wt%-methyl-red-(MR)-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) (PH1000) films. The red-colored and uniform polymer films demonstrated electrical conductivity values that significantly increased from 0.25 to 50 S·cm−1 after doping. The more than 200-fold enhancement in conductivity indicates that the doped films have a lower sheet resistance and better hole injection and transport properties than the pristine films. The resultant PhOLEDs based on the doped polymer anodes exhibited stable, broad, and intense blue emission at 468 nm with a 2616 cd·m−2 maximum luminance and a 4 V turn-on voltage. The obtained study results confirmed the effectiveness of the MR dye as a dopant for the significant enhancement of the conductivity and effective hole injection of PEDOT:PSS. Efficient future flexible optoelectronic applications can be built using this highly conductive polymer electrode obtained via a simple, solution-processed, and cost-effective doping approach.

Simplified modeling of a spacecraft power system is proposed to predict the conducted electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) environment. A key element of the spacecraft conducted environment is the electrical power subsystem, which corresponds to the power source. Since the impedance of the power source has a significant effect on conducted interference, the assessment of power bus impedance is essential to control and manage spacecraft EMC. In the proposed model, all components inside the power system were modeled as simple equivalent circuits with lumped elements. The advantage is that it simplifies the complex power system so that its impedance can be quickly obtained at the early stage of spacecraft system design and development. The model is validated by comparing the calculated results with experimental data. The comparison results between simulation and experiment showed good agreements.

Nonlinear optics: When graphene ‘does the twist’ Modifying the angle between the two layers of twisted bilayer graphene can considerably improve how photons interact with it to generate higher-energy photons. Dong-Il Yeom of Ajou University and colleagues in Korea shined laser light onto twisted bilayer graphene stacked at various angles, and measured the outcoming optical signals. Twisted bilayer graphene is made by stacking two monolayer graphenes at an angle. The interlayer interaction in this material leads to intriguing properties. The scientists found that changing the angle could enhance a nonlinear optical property, called third-harmonic generation, by 60 times compared to monolayer graphene. The team then conducted Raman measurements and modeling calculations to understand how this process occurs. They say their findings could pave the way towards novel designs for enhancing optical nonlinearity in two-dimensional stacked materials.

Abstract Introduction Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease, and AD patients are commonly sensitized to house dust mite (HDM). Of the several treatment options available, allergen‐specific immunotherapy (AIT) has been recognized as an effective treatment modality that is directed toward the immunoglobulin E (IgE)‐mediated nature of AD, and subcutaneous administration using HDM is most commonly used for AIT in AD. For patients sensitized to animal (dog or cat) dander, the treatment may not be easy, especially when avoiding the allergen is not possible. Methods This study enrolled patients with AD who were sensitized to cat and/or dog dander and underwent AIT (n = 19). Patients’ medical information was obtained, including past treatment history, treatment duration of AIT, and the progress of treatment. Also, the specific IgE levels and IgG4 levels were measured before and after AIT. Results A total of 19 patients with AD underwent AIT using cat and/or dog dander. The patients consisted of 4 males and 15 females with an average age of 31.74 ± 9.71. Only two patients had AD only, and the other 17 patients had one or more concomitant allergic diseases, such as allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma, or allergic conjunctivitis. Seven patients were not sensitized to HDMs and only sensitized to cat and/or dog dander. The duration of AIT ranged from 2 to 58 months. The symptoms of 17 patients were well‐controlled, requiring only topical treatment and/or oral antihistamines. One patient required systemic cyclosporine, but only of low dose (25 mg/day). The specific IgE levels were decreased (P = .005) and IgG4 levels showed the tendency of increasing after AIT. No adverse events were observed in these patients. Conclusion Although a larger number of patients for a longer follow‐up period are needed to precisely assess the treatment efficacy, AIT using cat and/or dog dander may be an effective treatment option for AD patients, especially for severe AD patients with other respiratory allergic comorbidities who cannot completely avoid the exposure to animal dander.

An organic conductive polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), is an attractive candidate for a low-cost, low-temperature, and solution-processed electrode material for achieving high-performance flexible and stretchable thin-film devices. Unlike most organic materials, this water-soluble conjugated polymer is highly stable against chemical and physical exposure. It exhibits the most superior mechanical flexibility and the highest optical transparency and electrical conductivity among all organic conductors. Therefore, this conductive polymer is among the most promising alternatives to the expensive, rigid, and brittle metal oxide- and even metal-based electrode materials, such as indium tin oxide (ITO) and gold, in the future solution-processed electronic devices. Nevertheless, the intrinsic conductivity of PEDOT:PSS is typically below 1 S cm−1, which is too low for such devices. Fortunately, the material properties of PEDOT:PSS, including its conductivity, are easily tuned by employing a large number of simple approaches. In this paper, the reports on the successful application of PEDOT:PSS to a wide range of solution-processed organic devices, such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs), and organic photovoltaics (OPVs), are reviewed. The recent progress in the development of highly conductive PEDOT:PSS-based films for electrode applications in the field of organic electronics is the main focus of the discussion herein.

Photolithography is an established microfabrication technique but commonly uses costly shortwavelength light sources to achieve high resolution. Here the authors use metal patterns embedded in a flexible elastomer photomask with mechanical robustness for generation of subdiffraction patterns as a cost effective near-field optical printing approach.

Background/Aims Accurate diagnosis and the effects of allergen-specific immunotherapy for pollinosis are greatly dependent on the potency and stability of the extract. This study aimed to examine factors, such as temperature and storage buffer composition, that affect the stability of allergen extracts from pollens of allergenic importance in Korea. Methods We prepared four pollen allergen extracts from ragweed, mugwort, Japanese hop, and sawtooth oak, which are the most important causes of seasonal rhinitis in Korea. Changes of protein and major allergen concentration were measured over 1 year by Bradford assay, two-site enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis after reconstitution of the lyophilized allergen extract in various buffers and stored at room temperature (RT, 18°C to 26°C) or refrigerated (4°C). Results More than 90% of the original protein concentration in all four extracts examined was detected over 1 year when 50% glycerol was added and refrigerated, whereas 57.9% to 94.5% remained in the extracts at RT. The addition of 50% glycerol to the storage buffer was found to prevent protein degradation at RT. Amb a 1, a major allergen of ragweed, was almost completely degraded in 9 weeks at RT when reconstituted in a buffer without 50% glycerol. However, 55.6% to 92.8% of Amb a 1 content was detected after 1 year of incubation at 4°C in all buffer conditions except 0.3% phenol. Conclusions Addition of 50% glycerol as well as refrigeration was found to be important in increasing the shelf-life of allergen extracts from pollens of allergenic importance.

Obesity: A trigger for asthma onset Insulin resistance may be an important causative factor underlying the increased risk of asthma and other respiratory issues in obese individuals. Obesity doubles the likelihood of developing asthma, with symptoms that are more difficult to control than in non-obese patients. The connection between these conditions is poorly understood, but researchers led by Jung-Won Park, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, South Korea, have identified a potential mechanism. They demonstrated that a signaling molecule called TGF-β1 contributes to airway sensitivity and tissue scarring in a mouse model of diet-induced obesity. Subsequent experiments showed that treatment with insulin also gives rise to increased TGF-β1 production in the mouse lung. Since insulin resistance is a common feature of obesity, resulting in abnormally high levels of circulating insulin, this could also account for the increased risk of respiratory problems.

Titanium nitride (TiN) is a material of interest for electrodes owing to its high-temperature stability, robustness, low-cost, and suitable electrical properties. Herein, we studied the surface morphology and electrical properties of TiN thin film deposited onto an Si/SiO2 substrate through direct current (DC) sputtering with a high-purity TiN target in an argon-gas environment. The electrical properties and surface morphology of TiN thin film significantly improved with increased source power and decreased working pressure. The improved electrical properties could be attributed to the suppressed secondary phase (Ti2N) formation and the reduced electron scattering on smoother surface. Consequently, high-quality TiN thin film with the lowest resistivity (ρ = 0.1 mΩ·cm) and the smallest surface roughness (RMS roughness, Rq = 0.3 nm) was obtained under the optimized condition. The TiN film was further used as the bottom electrode for a metal–insulator–metal (MIM) capacitor. Results demonstrated that the electrical properties of TiN film were comparable to those of noble-metal thin films. Therefore, the TiN thin film fabricated by DC sputtering method had excellent electrical properties and good Rq, indicating its potential applications in MIM capacitors and Si technology.

Background: Cetuximab (chimeric monoclonal antibody to human epidermal growth factor receptor) is used to treat colorectal and head and neck cancers. Due to cross-reactivity with galactose-α-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal), it can induce hypersensitivity even at first administration. We aimed to determine the incidence and clinical manifestation of cetuximab-induced anaphylaxis, and to establish a means of predicting its incidence in patients ahead of treatment. Methods: Nationwide and single-center pharmacovigilance data from 2010 to 2017 were collected from the Korea Institute of Drug Safety-Korea Adverse Event Reporting System and Severance Regional Pharmacovigilance Center. Patients scheduled for cetuximab administration were enrolled prospectively. A skin prick test was carried out and serum IgE specific to cetuximab and cross-reactive allergens were measured. Reactions were monitored after cetuximab infusion. Results: Over 8 years, there were 23 reports of anaphylaxis nationwide. In a single-center study, incidence of cetuximab-induced anaphylaxis was 1.1%. Most anaphylaxis occurred at first injection (93.3%), even under pretreatment with anti-allergic drugs. Four of 64 patients (6.3%) experienced severe anaphylaxis. The median cetuximab-specific IgE titer was 6.9 kUA/L in patients experiencing anaphylaxis and 0 kUA/L in those who did not (P
