We investigated assessments of calorie production and energy efficiencies of phytoplankton in Gwangyang, Jaran, and Geoje-Hansan bays in southern Korea, based on seasonal field measurements data for particulate organic carbon (POC), macromolecular compositions, calorie contents, and primary production. Our findings revealed that Geoje-Hansan Bay consistently exhibits higher POC concentrations compared to Gwangyang and Jaran bays, except during the summer season. The observed seasonal variations in POC concentrations and primary productions indicated distinct factors influencing POC distribution among the bays, which varies with the seasons. Macromolecular compositions displayed notable patterns, with Gwangyang Bay exhibiting pronounced seasonal variations, Jaran and Geoje-Hansan bays showing stable carbohydrate (CHO) dominance, and Gwangyang Bay displaying protein (PRT) dominance influenced by river-borne nutrients. Analysis of calorie content revealed that Geoje-Hansan Bay exhibited the highest calorie content, suggesting a more favorable physiological state of phytoplankton compared to Gwangyang and Jaran bays. Estimations of annual primary production and calorie production demonstrated regional variations, with Geoje-Hansan Bay having the highest values followed by Jaran Bay and Gwangyang Bay. These differences in primary production and calorie production reflect the diverse ecological conditions and nutrient availability specific to each bay. Interestingly, Gwangyang Bay demonstrated the highest energy efficiency, producing more calories per unit of carbon compared to the other two bays, potentially due to the influence of different dominant phytoplankton communities. This study enhances our understanding of ecosystem dynamics and ecological characteristics among the three bays, emphasizing the importance of considering seasonal variations and specific bay characteristics in investigating biogeochemical processes, energy flow, and ecosystem functioning. The findings contribute valuable insights for the sustainable management of coastal ecosystems and aquaculture practices.

PURPOSE This study was designed to propose a quantitative base training evaluation method through alpine ski training monitoring using a triaxial accelerometer. METHODS Twelve Korean alpine ski athletes, six each in France and New Zealand, participated in this study. Activity data during training and daily living were collected for 7 days via the Actigraph GT9X. The collected data were downloaded through ActiLife Ver 6.13.1. Energy expenditure was calculated with Freedson (2011), and the resting metabolic rate was corrected using the Harris & Benedict (1918) formula. Further, the physical activity intensity classification criteria and METs formula of Freedson (1998) were used to classify hourly activity intensity. The collected data were organized by date, time, intensity, and energy expenditure using Microsoft Excel 2016. Differences between weekdays vs. weekends and skiing vs. physical training were analyzed through a paired sample t-test using Windows SPSS 23 with a significance level of a=.05. RESULTS First, both groups showed repetitive on and off high-intensity activities during scheduled ski training and competition. AIM: To evaluate chorioretinal responses to intravitreal aflibercept injection (IAI) in patients with acute central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). METHODS: Seventy-one eyes from 71 patients with symptomatic CSC for less than six months were included. Thirty-five eyes received a single IAI and 36 eyes were observed without treatment. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central subfield foveal thickness (CSFT), and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) were assessed at baseline and at 1, 2, and 3mo. RESULTS: The mean SFCT in the IAI group decreased at 1mo, rebounded at 2mo and remained stable at 3mo compared to the baseline, while significant change was not noted in the observation group. Abstract Background This study aims to report a case of rapid progression of cataract to mature stage after intravitreal dexamethasone implantation for macular edema due to branch retinal vein occlusion. Case presentation A 59-year-old Korean male with complaints of sudden metamorphopsia and reduced visual acuity for three days in the left eye was referred to our clinic. Ophthalmological investigations included fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, and optical coherence tomography. In the left eye, branch retinal vein occlusion with macular edema was observed. We performed intravitreal dexamethasone implantation in the left eye three times within a period of one year. One week after the third intravitreal dexamethasone implantation, grade 1 posterior subcapsular opacity and raised intraocular pressure were observed in the left eye. Three weeks later, mature cataract was observed in the left eye. We performed cataract surgery along with intravitreal ranibizumab injection in the left eye. The procedure was uneventful, and the visual acuity improved postoperatively. Conclusions Posterior subcapsular cataract developed due to intravitreal dexamethasone implantation can progress rapidly to mature stage. Therefore, short-term follow-up examinations may be necessary for early diagnosis and treatment of this complication.

The current phytoplankton community structure is expected to change, with small phytoplankton becoming dominant under ongoing warming conditions. To understand and evaluate the ecological roles of small phytoplankton in terms of food quantity and quality, the carbon uptake rates and intracellular biochemical compositions (i.e., carbohydrates, CHO; proteins, PRT; and lipids, LIP) of phytoplankton of different sizes were analyzed and compared in two different regions of the western East/Japan Sea (EJS): the Ulleung Basin (UB) and northwestern East/Japan Sea (NES). The average carbon uptake rate by the whole phytoplankton community in the UB (79.0 ± 12.2 mg C m–2 h–1) was approximately two times higher than that in the NES (40.7 ± 2.2 mg C m–2 h–1), although the average chlorophyll a (chl a) concentration was similar between the UB (31.0 ± 8.4 mg chl a m–2) and NES (28.4 ± 7.9 mg chl a m–2). The main reasons for the large difference in the carbon uptake rates are believed to be water temperature, which affects metabolic activity and growth rate, and the difference in euphotic depths. The contributions of small phytoplankton to the total carbon uptake rate were not significantly different between the regions studied. However, the rate of decrease in the total carbon uptake with increasing contributions from small phytoplankton was substantially higher in the UB than in the NES. This result suggests that compared to other regions in the EJS, the primary production in the UB could decrease rapidly under ongoing climate change. The calorific contents calculated based on biochemical compositions were similar between the small (1.01 ± 0.33 Kcal m–3) and large (1.14 ± 0.36 Kcal m–3) phytoplankton in the UB, whereas the biochemical contents were higher in the large phytoplankton (1.88 ± 0.54 Kcal m–3) than in the small phytoplankton (1.06 ± 0.18 Kcal m–3) in the NES. The calorific values per unit of chl a were higher for the large phytoplankton than for the small phytoplankton in both regions, which suggests that large phytoplankton could provide a more energy efficient food source to organisms in higher trophic levels in the western EJS.

A rare gastric mucosal lesion characterized by Russell body-containing plasma cell infiltration is termed as Russell body gastritis. This lesion is highly suggested to be correlated with Helicobacter pylori-induced chronic gastritis, and often misdiagnosed as mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, signet ring cell carcinoma, plasmacytoma, or xanthoma. However, Russell body gastritis is easily discriminated by its polyclonal immunoreaction to immunoglobulin light chains contrary to monoclonal immunoreaction of neoplastic disease. We report here a case of Russell body gastritis associated with H. pylori infection, which disappeared after H. pylori eradication.

The recent dramatic decline in sea ice conditions in the Arctic Ocean has led to the ecophysiological changes in the phytoplankton community. Little is currently known about how the physiological status of phytoplankton has changed under rapidly changing environmental conditions in the Arctic Ocean. Using the 13C isotope tracer technique, the carbon allocation of phytoplankton into different photosynthetic end-products was determined in the northern Chukchi Sea on the basis of two Arctic expeditions conducted in 2011 and 2012 to identify the physiological status of phytoplankton. Lipids were the predominant photosynthetic biochemical fraction (42.5%) in 2011, whereas carbon allocation to proteins was most dominant under ice-free conditions in 2012 (47.7%). Based on a comparison of the photosynthetic carbon allocation of phytoplankton according to sea ice conditions, we found that photosynthetic carbon allocation to different macromolecular pools was significantly different depending on the sea ice conditions and that the light conditions caused by different sea ice conditions could be an important reason for the differences in carbon allocation to photosynthetic end-products. Different dominant phytoplankton groups related to size classes also could cause changes in the photosynthetic carbon allocation of phytoplankton related mainly to the lipid synthesis. Our results showed that the physiological status of Arctic phytoplankton could be changed by producing different photosynthetic end-products under current environmental changes. This change in photosynthetic end-products of phytoplankton as a basic food source could be further linked to higher trophic levels in regards to their nutritional and energetic aspects, which could have potential consequences for Arctic marine ecosystems.

The cellular macromolecular contents and energy value of phytoplankton as primary food source determine the growth of higher trophic levels, affecting the balance and sustainability of oceanic food webs. Especially, proteins are more directly linked with basic functions of phytoplankton biosynthesis and cell division and transferred through the food chains. In recent years, the East/Japan Sea (EJS) has been changed dramatically in environmental conditions, such as physical and chemical characteristics, as well as biological properties. Therefore, developing an algorithm to estimate the protein concentration of phytoplankton and monitor their spatiotemporal variations on a broad scale would be invaluable. To derive the protein concentration of phytoplankton in EJS, the new regional algorithm was developed by using multiple linear regression analyses based on field-measured data which were obtained from 2012 to 2018 in the southwestern EJS. The major factors for the protein concentration were identified as chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and sea surface nitrate (SSN) in the southwestern EJS. The coefficient of determination (r2) between field-measured and algorithm-derived protein concentrations was 0.55, which is rather low but reliable. The satellite-derived estimation generally follows the 1:1 line with the field-measured data, with Pearson’s correlation coefficient, which was 0.40 (p-value < 0.01, n = 135). No remarkable trend in the long-term annual protein concentration of phytoplankton was found in the study area during our observation period. However, some seasonal difference was observed in winter protein concentration between the 2003–2005 and 2017–2019 periods. The algorithm is developed for the regional East/Japan Sea (EJS) and could contribute to long-term monitoring for climate-associated ecosystem changes. For a better understanding of spatiotemporal variation in the protein concentration of phytoplankton in the EJS, this algorithm should be further improved with continuous field surveys.

As a part of Korean-Russian joint expeditions in the East/Japan Sea during 2012 and 2015, a set of total and small (3− and NH4+ uptake rate estimations were carried out. The study aimed to assess the spatio-temporal variations in dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) assimilation by the total and small phytoplankton. The results show that the total NO3− uptake rates during 2012 varied between 0.001 and 0.150 μmol NL−1h−1 (mean ± SD = 0.034 ± 0.033) and that the total NH4+ uptake rates ranged between 0.002 and 0.707 μmol NL−1h−1 (mean ± SD = 0.200 ± 0.158). The total uptake rates during 2015 were ranged from 0.003 to 0.530 (mean ± S.D. = 0.117 ± 0.120 μmol NL−1h−1) for NO3− and from 0.008 to 1.17 (mean ± S.D. = 0.199 ± 0.266 NL−1h−1) for NH4+. The small phytoplankton NO3− and NH4+ uptake rates during 2015 ranged between 0.001 and 0.164 (mean ± S.D. = 0.033 ± 0.036) μmol NL−1h−1 and 0.010–0.304 (mean ± S.D. = 0.101 ± 0.073) μmol NL−1h−1, respectively. Small phytoplankton’s contribution to the total depth-integrated NO3− and NH4+ uptake rates ranged from 10.24 to 59.36% and from 30.21 to 68.55%, respectively. The significant negative relationship observed between the depth-integrated total NO3− and NH4+ uptake rates and small phytoplankton contributions indicates a possible decline in the DIN assimilation rates under small phytoplankton dominance. The results from the present study highlight the possibility of a reduction in the total DIN assimilation process in the East/Japan Sea when small phytoplankton dominate under strong thermal stratification due to sea surface warming. The present study’s findings agree with the model projections, which suggested a decline in primary production in the global warming scenario.

There has been strong demand for the development of an accurate but simple method to assess the freshness of food. In this study, we demonstrated a system to determine food freshness by analyzing the spectral response from a portable visible/near-infrared (VIS/NIR) spectrometer using the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based machine learning algorithm. Spectral response data from salmon, tuna, and beef incubated at 25 °C were obtained every minute for 30 h and then categorized into three states of “fresh”, “likely spoiled”, and “spoiled” based on time and pH. Using the obtained spectral data, a CNN-based machine learning algorithm was built to evaluate the freshness of experimental objects. In addition, a CNN-based machine learning algorithm with a shift-invariant feature can minimize the effect of the variation caused using multiple devices in a real environment. The accuracy of the obtained machine learning model based on the spectral data in predicting the freshness was approximately 85% for salmon, 88% for tuna, and 92% for beef. Therefore, our study demonstrates the practicality of a portable spectrometer in food freshness assessment.

The most common cardiac cause of massive hemoptysis is mitral stenosis. Mitral regurgitation is rarely complicated by massive hemoptysis. A 48-year-old man with no significant medical history was admitted to our hospital with hemoptysis and production of 500 mL of blood within 24 hours. A pan-systolic murmur was found on chest examination. A chest computed tomography showed airspace consolidation in the right upper and middle lobes, with faint bilateral ground glass opacity. Echocardiography revealed mitral valve prolapse and grade IV mitral regurgitation. The patient was diagnosed with sporadic primary mitral valve prolapse. After mitral valve repair surgery, the patient recovered fully.

To evaluate the incidence and associated risk factors of massive subretinal hemorrhage (SRH) in patients with retinal angiomatous proliferation (RAP).A total of 187 eyes of 135 treatment-naıve patients diagnosed with RAP were evaluated retrospectively. Clinical records including the time between the initial visit, last anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment, last stable examination, and the date of massive SRH were reviewed. Imaging findings including indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) were analyzed.Massive SRH developed in 18 eyes (9.6%) a median of 20 months after the initial presentation. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis revealed that the incidence (2.8, 5.8, 13.1, and 21.0% after 1,2,5 and 10 years, respectively) continuously increased. Among 14 eyes with discernable vascular anastomosis on baseline ICGA, 13 (92.8%) showed retinal arteriole involvement. On spectral-domain OCT imaging of the last visit prior to the massive SRH, a layered lamellar tissue complex was noted under the retinal pigment epithelium in 9 of 13 eyes, which was significantly associated with massive SRH[hazard ratio(HR),5.883;P = .010]. The average time between the last stable examination/last injection and the massive SRH was 2 and 5 months, respectively. The patients were treated with anti-VEGF, gas and recombinant tissue plasminogen activator injection; however, all except one eye had visual acuity worse than 20/1000 at the final visit.Massive SRH can occur in RAP in the course of anti-VEGF treatment, resulting in severe vision loss. A proactive dosing regimen may be more appropriate for these RAP eyes.

The circadian clock, an internal time-keeping system orchestrates 24 hr rhythms in physiology and behavior by regulating rhythmic transcription in cells. Astrocytes, the most abundant glial cells, play crucial roles in CNS functions, but the impact of the circadian clock on astrocyte functions remains largely unexplored. In this study, we identified 412 circadian rhythmic transcripts in cultured mouse cortical astrocytes through RNA sequencing. Gene Ontology analysis indicated that genes involved in Ca2+ homeostasis are under circadian control. Notably, Herpud1 (Herp) exhibited robust circadian rhythmicity at both mRNA and protein levels, a rhythm disrupted in astrocytes lacking the circadian transcription factor, BMAL1. HERP regulated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) Ca2+ release by modulating the degradation of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptors (ITPRs). ATP-stimulated ER Ca2+ release varied with the circadian phase, being more pronounced at subjective night phase, likely due to the rhythmic expression of ITPR2. Correspondingly, ATP-stimulated cytosolic Ca2+ increases were heightened at the subjective night phase. This rhythmic ER Ca2+ response led to circadian phase-dependent variations in the phosphorylation of Connexin 43 (Ser368) and gap junctional communication. Given the role of gap junction channel (GJC) in propagating Ca2+ signals, we suggest that this circadian regulation of ER Ca2+ responses could affect astrocytic modulation of synaptic activity according to the time of day. Overall, our study enhances the understanding of how the circadian clock influences astrocyte function in the CNS, shedding light on their potential role in daily variations of brain activity and health.

Background and study aims: Many patients with acute gastrointestinal bleeding present with anemia and frequently require red blood cell (RBC) transfusion. A restrictive transfusion strategy and a low hemoglobin (Hb) threshold for transfusion had been shown to produce acceptable outcomes in patients with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding. However, most patients are discharged with mild anemia owing to the restricted volume of packed RBCs (pRBCs). We investigated whether discharge Hb influences the outcome in patients with acute nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Patients and methods: We retrospectively analyzed patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding who had received pRBCs during hospitalization between January 2012 and January 2014. Patients with variceal bleeding, malignant lesion, stroke, or cardiovascular disease were excluded. We divided the patients into 2 groups, low (8 g/dL ≤ Hb 10 g/dL. Patients in the low Hb group had a lower consumption of pRBCs and shorter hospital stay than did those in the high Hb group. The Hb levels were not fully recovered at outpatient follow-up until 7 days after discharge; however, most patients showed Hb recovery at 45 days after discharge. The rate of rebleeding after discharge was not significantly different between the 2 groups. Conclusions: In patients with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding, a discharge Hb between 8 and 10 g/dL was linked to favorable outcomes on outpatient follow-up. Most patients recovered from anemia without any critical complication within 45 days after discharge.

Background: The knowledge of 3-dimensional scapular kinematics is essential for understanding the pathological lesions of the shoulder and elbow in throwing athletes. Many studies about alterations of the resting scapular position, dynamic scapular motion, or scapular dyskinesis (SD) have been conducted, yet none of them have identified a consistent pattern of altered scapular kinematics in throwing athletes. Hypothesis/Purpose: To analyze the 3-dimensional scapular kinematics of dominant and nondominant arms in baseball players with a pathological condition of the shoulder or elbow. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Bilateral scapular positions, consisting of upward rotation (UR), superior translation (ST), internal rotation (IR), protraction (PRO), and anterior tilting (AT) with an arm at rest and at 150° forward elevation, were measured among 319 baseball players with SD using 3-dimensional computed tomography. Angular values of scapula were compared between dominant and nondominant arms with statistical analysis. Level of Evidence: Level III, diagnostic study. Results: The scapular position of dominant arms showed significantly more AT, less ST at rest and more UR and IR and less ST, PRO, and AT at 150° full forward elevation compared with the nondominant arms. The magnitude of mean change of UR, IR, PRO, and AT during arm elevation increased significantly between the paired arms (P value: UR, ST, PRO, and AT: <.001 and IR: .001). Conclusion: When compared with the nondominant arms, UR, AT, and PRO with the arm at 150° forward elevation of dominant symptomatic arms in baseball players tilted toward positive compensation, whereas IR altered toward negative decompensation.
