Aplastic anemia, mental retardation, and dwarfism (AMeD) syndrome, also known as aldehyde degradation deficiency (ADD) syndrome, is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the ALDH2 and ADH5 genes, leading to decreased activity of the aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) and alcohol dehydrogenase 5 (ADH5) enzymes, subsequently triggering enhanced cellular levels of formaldehyde and diverse multisystem manifestations. Herein, we present the case of a 7-year-old girl with AMeD syndrome, characterized by pancytopenia, developmental delay, microcephaly, epilepsy, and myelodysplastic syndrome. Whole-exome sequencing revealed compound heterozygous variants (c.832G>C and c.678delA) in the ADH5 gene and a heterozygous pathogenic variant (c.1510G>A) in the ALDH2 gene. This case underscores the complexity of AMeD syndrome, emphasizing the importance of genetic testing to ensure diagnosis and aid in the development of potential targeted therapeutic approaches.

Abstract This paper proposes a new method for predicting the stage of osteoporosis by estimating bone-density parameters using an ultrasonic-bone densitometer. Using the developed ultrasonic bone densitometer, the ultrasonic signal passing through the phalanx of the finger was measured, and the measured signal was preprocessed to generate input data for parameter estimation. The Nakagami probability-density function was used for modeling this data, and optimal bone-density parameters were estimated using an optimization problem – to predict the stage of osteoporosis. The proposed method was verified through in vitro and in vivo experiments. In phantom experiments, cubes with different materials (ABS plastic, PLA plastic, Nylon) were used, and each cube had a different density through internal density so that it could mimic bones. The experiments were conducted using them and the results were compared. The experimental results confirmed that there was a correlation between the density and estimated parameters for all three materials. In the in vivo experiment, the osteoporosis stages were classified as normal, osteopenia, and osteoporosis, and the bone-density parameters were estimated for the participants of each group. Thus, a basis for predicting the stage of osteoporosis was created, and data from new participants were collected and verified as test data. As a result, normal and abnormal groups (osteopenia and osteoporosis) were predicted.

Purpose Data regarding the association between metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) and preclinical atherosclerosis in childhood are lacking. Carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) is a noninvasive method used to assess cardiovascular risk. This study examined the relationships among cIMT, metabolic phenotypes, and cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRFs) in overweight and obese adolescents. Methods Anthropometric, biochemical, and cIMT data were collected. The study participants were categorized as MHO or metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO) based on insulin resistance. CMRFs were assessed using blood pressure (BP); levels of triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and fasting plasma glucose; or a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. Differences in cIMT values were evaluated according to the metabolic phenotype and factors associated with cIMT. Results Among the 111 participants (80 boys, 72.1%), 23 (20.7%) were classified as MHO and 88 (79.3%) as MUO. A multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) is a powerful global optimization tool, but its results are considerably affected by the crossover parameter ηc. Finding an appropriate ηc demands too much computing time because MOGA needs be run several times in order to find a good ηc. In this paper, a self-adaptive crossover parameter is introduced in a strategy to adopt a new ηc for every generation while running MOGA. This new scheme has also been adopted for a multi-generation Gaussian process optimization (MGGPO) when producing trial solutions. Compared with the existing MGGPO and MOGA, the MGGPO and MOGA with the new strategy show better performance in nonlinear optimization for the design of low-emittance storage rings.

Abstract Electroadhesive forces are crucial in various applications, including grasping devices, electro-sticky boards, electrostatic levitation, and climbing robots. However, the design of electroadhesive devices relies on speculative or empirical error approaches. Therefore, we present a theoretical model comprising predictive coplanar electrodes and protective layers for analyzing the electrostatic fields between an object and electroadhesive device. The model considers the role of protective layer and the air gap between the electrode surface and the object. To exert a higher electroadhesive force, the higher permeability of the protective layer is required. However, a high permeability of the protective layer is hard to withstand high applied voltage. To overcome this, two materials with different permeabilities were employed as protective layers—a low-permeability inner layer and a high-permeability outer layer—to maintain a high voltage and generate a large electroadhesive force. Because a low-permeability inner layer material was selected, a more permeable outer layer material was considered. A theoretical analysis revealed complex relationships between various design parameters. The impact of key design parameters and working environments on the electroadhesion behavior was further investigated. This study reveals the fundamental principles of electroadhesion and proposes prospective methods to enhance the design of electroadhesive devices for various engineering applications.

Abstract Neoantigens are ideal targets for cancer immunotherapy because they are expressed de novo in tumor tissue but not in healthy tissue and are therefore recognized as foreign by the immune system. Advances in next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics technologies have enabled the quick identification and prediction of tumor-specific neoantigens; however, only a small fraction of predicted neoantigens are immunogenic. To improve the predictability of immunogenic neoantigens, we developed the in silico neoantigen prediction workflows VACINUSpMHC and VACINUSTCR: VACINUSpMHC incorporates physical binding between peptides and MHCs (pMHCs), and VACINUSTCR integrates T cell reactivity to the pMHC complex through deep learning-based pairing with T cell receptors (TCRs) of putative tumor-reactive CD8 tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). We then validated our neoantigen prediction workflows both in vitro and in vivo in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and in a B16F10 mouse melanoma model. The predictive abilities of VACINUSpMHC and VACINUSTCR were confirmed in a validation cohort of 8 patients with HCC. Of a total of 118 neoantigen candidates predicted by VACINUSpMHC, 48 peptides were ultimately selected using VACINUSTCR. In vitro validation revealed that among the 48 predicted neoantigen candidates, 13 peptides were immunogenic. Assessment of the antitumor efficacy of the candidate neoepitopes using a VACINUSTCR in vivo mouse model suggested that vaccination with the predicted neoepitopes induced neoantigen-specific T cell responses and enabled the trafficking of neoantigen-specific CD8 + T cell clones into the tumor tissue, leading to tumor suppression. This study showed that the prediction of immunogenic neoantigens can be improved by integrating a tumor-reactive TIL TCR-pMHC ternary complex.

One dementia prevention strategy that is effective for older adults is frequent participation in leisure time physical activity. However, research gaps exist in our understanding of the longitudinal relationship between different levels of leisure time physical activity participation and the cognitive function of older adults with mild cognitive impairment. Thus, we investigated this relationship using Health and Retirement Study data from 2012 to 2020. Results from Repeated Measures Multivariate Analysis of Covariance indicated that both the mid (Mean Difference = −0.45) and high level (Mean Difference = −0.82) leisure time physical activity groups showed higher levels of memory function compared to the low-level leisure time physical activity group. Additionally, the mid (Mean Difference = −0.21) and high level (Mean Difference = −0.37) leisure time physical activity groups reported better working memory function, and the mid (Mean Difference = −0.02) and high level (Mean Difference = −0.02) leisure time physical activity groups showed higher levels of attention and processing speed than the low-level leisure time physical activity group. These findings suggest that older adults with mild cognitive impairment who engage either vigorously or moderately in leisure time physical activity (more than three times a week) experience improvements in cognitive function compared to those who do not. This study provides valuable insights for clinicians on the optimal level of leisure time physical activity required to mitigate cognitive decline in older adults with mild cognitive impairment.

Protein modification by the ubiquitin-like protein ISG15 (ISGylation) plays a crucial role in the immunological defense against viral infection. During severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, innate immune signaling proteins are ISGylated, facilitating innate immunity. However, whether SARS-CoV-2 proteins are direct substrates for ISGylation remains unclear. In this study, we investigated whether SARS-CoV-2 proteins undergo ISGylation and whether ISGylation affects viral protein function. Co-transfection ISGylation analysis of SARS-CoV-2 proteins showed that the nucleocapsid (N) protein is ISGylated at several sites. Herc5 promoted N ISGylation and interacted with N, indicating that Herc5 acts as an E3 ligase for N ISGylation. Lys-261 (K261) within the oligomerization domain of N was identified as a potential ISGylation site that is necessary for efficient ISGylation of N. K261 is positioned at the center of the dimer interface in the crystal structure of the C-terminal domain dimer and the ISGylated form of N showed reduced protein dimerization in pull-down analysis. Importantly, a recombinant virus expressing K261R mutant N showed enhanced resistance to interferon-β treatment compared to its parental virus. We also found that viral PLpro removes conjugated ISG15 from N. Our findings demonstrate that ISGylation of SARS-CoV-2 N inhibits protein dimerization, resulting in viral growth more susceptible to type I interferon responses, and that viral PLpro counteracts this ISG15-mediated antiviral activity by removing conjugated ISG15 from N.

Abstract Clinical translation of current cancer vaccine research has been hampered by limited antitumor immune responses due to inefficient antigen delivery and presentation, suboptimal DC and T cell activation. Biomaterial‐based nanovaccine offers targeted antigen delivery, protection from degradation in vivo, and prolonged tumor therapeutic efficacy. This study introduces a lipid‐coated deoxycholic acid‐survivin nanoassembly (DA‐L‐DSA). Survivin, overexpressed in several cancer cells and involved in cancer cell growth and immune evasion, is selected as a tumor‐associated antigen. An major histocompatibility complex class I binding epitope of survivin is engineered into the nanoassembly. R848, TLR 7/8 agonist, and SD‐208, TGF‐beta receptor1 kinase inhibitor, are coencapsulated into the nanoassembly as potent adjuvants to boost DC maturation and enhance antigen presentation. The DA‐L‐DSA effectively stimulates the maturation of dendritic cells, migrates into lymph nodes, and enhances T‐cell activation and Th1 response. A substantial influx of cytotoxic T lymphocytes into primary tumors is observed in a murine melanoma model and demonstrates anti‐metastatic effects in a spontaneous breast cancer metastasis model. Furthermore, DA‐L‐DSA exhibits a remarkable synergistic effect in the combination therapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors alleviating immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Taken together, these findings suggest DA‐L‐DSA as a promising immuno‐therapeutic platform that could be applicable to diverse intractable cancers.

Abstract The emergence of high-form-factor electronics has led to a demand for high-density integration of inorganic thin-film devices and circuits with full stretchability. However, the intrinsic stiffness and brittleness of inorganic materials have impeded their utilization in free-form electronics. Here, we demonstrate highly integrated strain-insensitive stretchable metal-oxide transistors and circuitry (442 transistors/cm2) via a photolithography-based bottom-up approach, where transistors with fluidic liquid metal interconnection are embedded in large-area molecular-tailored heterogeneous elastic substrates (5 × 5 cm2). Amorphous indium-gallium-zinc-oxide transistor arrays (7 × 7), various logic gates, and ring-oscillator circuits exhibited strain-resilient properties with performance variation less than 20% when stretched up to 50% and 30% strain (10,000 cycles) for unit transistor and circuits, respectively. The transistors operate with an average mobility of 12.7 ( ± 1.7) cm2 V−1s−1, on/off current ratio of > 107, and the inverter, NAND, NOR circuits operate quite logically. Moreover, a ring oscillator comprising 14 cross-wired transistors validated the cascading of the multiple stages and device uniformity, indicating an oscillation frequency of ~70 kHz.

The prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents has been gradually increasing in recent years and has become a major health problem. Childhood obesity can readily progress to adult obesity. It is associated with obesity-related comorbidities, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and the risk factor for cardiovascular disease. It is important to make an accurate assessment of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents with consideration of growth and development. Childhood obesity can then be prevented and treated using an appropriate treatment goal and safe and effective treatment strategies. This article summarizes the clinical practice guidelines for obesity in children and adolescents that are included in the 8th edition of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Obesity of the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity.

Abstract To attain a circular carbon economy and resolve CO2 electroreduction technology obstacles, single‐atom catalysts (SACs) have emerged as a logical option for electrocatalysis because of their extraordinary catalytic activity. Among SACs, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been recognized as promising support materials because of their exceptional ability to prevent metal aggregation. This study shows that atomically dispersed Ni single atoms on a precisely engineered MOF nanosheet display a high Faradaic efficiency of approximately 100% for CO formation in H‐cell and three‐compartment microfluidic flow‐cell reactors and an excellent turnover frequency of 23,699 h−1, validating their intrinsic catalytic potential. These results suggest that crystallographic variations affect the abundant vacancy sites on the MOF nanosheets, which are linked to the evaporation of Zn‐containing organic linkers during pyrolysis. Furthermore, using X‐ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, a comprehensive investigation of the unsaturated atomic coordination environments and the underlying mechanism involving CO* preadsorbed sites as initial states was possible and provided valuable insights.

Background Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) poses unique challenges due to its complex nature and the need for more effective treatments. Recent studies showed encouraging outcomes from combining paclitaxel (PTX) with programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) blockade in treating TNBC, although the exact mechanisms behind the improved results are unclear.Methods We employed an integrated approach, analyzing spatial transcriptomics and single-cell RNA sequencing data from TNBC patients to understand why the combination of PTX and PD-1 blockade showed better response in TNBC patients. We focused on toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), a receptor of PTX, and its role in modulating the cross-presentation signaling pathways in tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) within the tumor microenvironment. Leveraging insights obtained from patient-derived data, we conducted in vitro experiments using immunosuppressive bone marrow-derived macrophages (iBMDMs) to validate if PTX could augment the cross-presentation and phagocytosis activities. Subsequently, we extended our study to an in vivo murine model of TNBC to ascertain the effects of PTX on the cross-presentation capabilities of TAMs and its downstream impact on CD8+ T cell-mediated immune responses.Results Data analysis from TNBC patients revealed that the activation of TLR4 and cross-presentation signaling pathways are crucial for the antitumor efficacy of PTX. In vitro studies showed that PTX treatment enhances the cross-presentation ability of iBMDMs. In vivo experiments demonstrated that PTX activates TLR4-dependent cross-presentation in TAMs, improving CD8+ T cell-mediated antitumor responses. The efficacy of PTX in promoting antitumor immunity was elicited when combined with PD-1 blockade, suggesting a complementary interaction.Conclusions This study reveals how PTX boosts the effectiveness of PD-1 inhibitors in treating TNBC. We found that PTX activates TLR4 signaling in TAMs. This activation enhances their ability to present antigens, thereby boosting CD8+ T cell antitumor responses. These findings not only shed light on PTX’s immunomodulatory role in TNBC but also underscore the potential of targeting TAMs’ antigen presentation capabilities in immunotherapy approaches.

Background Early clinical experience with the Tenzing 7 delivery catheter (T7, Route 92 Medical, San Mateo, CA, USA) demonstrates high success rates for intracranial delivery of large bore aspiration catheters. Its soft, flexible, tapered tip mitigates the “ledge effect” that may cause resistance when navigating neurovascular devices through tortuous internal carotid arteries (ICAs) or other arterial branch origin variants. This study aims to characterize T7 performance across ICAs with varying tortuosities. Methods A retrospective analysis was performed of prospectively collected data from patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with aspiration thrombectomy using T7 between January 2020 and July 2022 at 3 stroke centers. The ICA tortuosity index (TI) was derived from the ratio of actual to straight length measurements from anterior‐posterior and lateral projections during digital subtraction angiography. T7 success is defined as delivering the aspiration catheter to the face of the occlusion. Regression analysis between TI and T7 success was performed. Correlations were calculated between TI, ICA grading, puncture‐to‐reperfusion time, number of passes, and final modified Treatment in Cerebral Infarction score. Significance was P ≤$ \le $ 0.05. Results Of 107 patients meeting inclusion, median age was 69 (interquartile range 60–81) years, and most occlusions were in the M1 segment (73/107; 68.2%). T7 rate of success was 95.3% (102/107), and there was no association between TI and T7 technical success (P = 0.23). Greater TIs and cavernous ICA tortuosity grades were not correlated with worse intraprocedural outcomes (P>0.24). Conclusion In our multicenter experience, T7 performed well even in highly tortuous extracranial vasculature. Successful aspiration catheter delivery and intraprocedural performance were consistent irrespective of ICA tortuosity. Our findings support the use of T7 in aspiration endovascular thrombectomy for acute stroke for patients with tortuous extracranial vasculature.

The rapid expansion of blockchain technology, particularly Ethereum, has driven widespread adoption of smart contracts. However, the security of these contracts remains a critical concern due to the increasing frequency and complexity of vulnerabilities. This paper presents a comprehensive approach to detecting vulnerabilities in Ethereum smart contracts using pre-trained Large Language Models (LLMs). We apply transformer-based LLMs, leveraging their ability to understand and analyze Solidity code to identify potential security flaws. Our methodology involves fine-tuning eight distinct pre-trained LLM models on curated datasets varying in types and distributions of vulnerabilities, including multi-class vulnerabilities. The datasets-SB Curate, Benmark Solidity Smart Contract, and ScrawID-were selected to ensure a thorough evaluation of model performance across different vulnerability types. We employed over-sampling techniques to address class imbalances, resulting in more reliable training outcomes. We extensively evaluate these models using precision, recall, accuracy, F1 score, and Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) curve metrics. Our results demonstrate that the transformer encoder architecture, with its multi-head attention and feed-forward mechanisms, effectively captures the nuances of smart contract vulnerabilities. The models show promising potential in enhancing the security and reliability of Ethereum smart contracts, offering a robust solution to challenges posed by software vulnerabilities in the blockchain ecosystem.

Purpose The association between appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) and cardiometabolic risk has been emphasized. We estimated reference values of the percentage of ASM (PASM) and investigated their association with metabolic syndrome (MS) in Korean adolescents. Methods Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey performed between 2009 and 2011 were used. Tables and graphs of reference PASM were generated using 1,522 subjects, 807 of whom were boys aged 10 to 18. The relationship between PASM and each component of MS in adolescents was further analyzed in 1,174 subjects, 613 of whom were boys. Moreover, the pediatric simple MS score (PsiMS), the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index were analyzed. Multivariate linear and logistic regressions adjusting for age, sex, household income, and daily energy intake were performed. Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between different types of leisure activities (e.g., Leisure-Time Physical Activity (LTPA), Intellectual activity, and Community-based activity) and coping strategies (e.g., problem-solving, social support, avoidance) among older Korean immigrants. Methods: This study collected survey data from older Korean immigrants (50 to 85 years old) living in Southern Californian cities in the United States (n = 51). We conducted a hierarchical regression analysis to investigate the relationship and the change of explained variances. Results: We found that LTPA and intellectual leisure were significantly associated with the increased use of support-seeking strategies by older immigrants. Community-based leisure was positively associated with their problem-solving and avoidance strategies. Discussion: The present study not only deepens the body of knowledge describing how particular leisure activities are associated with coping strategies but also provides practical implications for helping older immigrants cope with acculturation stress and life course challenges.

In May 2023, the Committee of Clinical Practice Guidelines of the Korean Diabetes Association published the revised clinical practice guidelines for Korean adults with diabetes and prediabetes. We incorporated the latest clinical research findings through a comprehensive systematic literature review and applied them in a manner suitable for the Korean population. These guidelines are designed for all healthcare providers nationwide, including physicians, diabetes experts, and certified diabetes educators who manage patients with diabetes or individuals at risk of developing diabetes. Based on recent changes in international guidelines and the results of a Korean epidemiological study, the recommended age for diabetes screening has been lowered. In collaboration with the relevant Korean medical societies, recently revised guidelines for managing hypertension and dyslipidemia in patients with diabetes have been incorporated into this guideline. An abridgment containing practical information on patient education and systematic management in the clinic was published separately.

Monitoring neural activity in the central nervous system often utilizes silicon-based microelectromechanical system (MEMS) probes. Despite their effectiveness in monitoring, these probes have a fragility issue, limiting their application across various fields. This study introduces flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) neural probes characterized by robust mechanical and electrical properties. The probes demonstrate low impedance after platinum coating, making them suitable for multiunit recordings in awake animals. This capability allows for the simultaneous monitoring of a large population of neurons in the brain, including cluster data. Additionally, these probes exhibit no fractures, mechanical failures, or electrical issues during repeated-bending tests, both during handling and monitoring. Despite the possibility of using this neural probe for signal measurement in awake animals, simply applying a platinum coating may encounter difficulties in chronic tests and other applications. Furthermore, this suggests that FPCB probes can be advanced by any method and serve as an appropriate type of tailorable neural probes for monitoring neural systems in awake animals.

Background : The prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents is increasing worldwide, which is of concern because obesity can lead to various complications such as metabolic syndrome (MS). Waist circumference (WC) and waist-height ratio (WHtR) are useful indicators of abdominal obesity and MS. In this study, we investigate trends in the prevalence of abdominal obesity and MS using two different references. Methods : Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007 to 2020) were used. In total, 21,652 participants aged 2 to 18 years and 9,592 participants aged 10 to 18 years were analyzed for abdominal obesity and MS, respectively. The prevalence of abdominal obesity and that of MS were compared using the Korean National Growth Chart in 2007 (REF2007) and the newly published WC and WHtR reference values in 2022 (REF2022). Results : Both WC and WHtR showed an increasing trend. The prevalence of abdominal obesity was 14.71% based on REF2022, 5.85% points higher than that of 8.86% based on REF2007. MS based on REF2022 had a higher prevalence for both the National Cholesterol Education Program definition (3.90% by REF2007, 4.78% by REF2022) and the International Diabetes Federation definition (2.29% by REF2007, 3.10% by REF2022). The prevalence of both abdominal obesity and MS increased over time. Conclusion : The prevalence of abdominal obesity and MS increased in Korean children and adolescents from 2007 to 2020. When analyzed by REF2022, both abdominal obesity and MS showed higher prevalence rates than when using REF2007, indicating that previous reports were underestimated. Follow-up for abdominal obesity and MS using REF2022 is needed.

Purpose Several definitions for severe obesity have been used, primarily the 99th percentile of the body mass index (BMI) and 120% of the 95th BMI percentile. This study aimed to establish a standardized definition for severe obesity in children and adolescents in Korea. Methods The 99th BMI percentile line and 120% of the 95th BMI percentile line were constructed using 2017 Korean National Growth Charts. To compare these 2 cutoff points for severe obesity, we included 9,984 individuals (5,289 males and 4,695 females) aged 10–18 years with anthropometric data available from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007–2018. Results Although 120% of the 95th percentile of BMI is widely used as a definition of severe obesity, the 99th percentile is almost identical to 110% of the 95th percentile in Korea, according to the latest national BMI growth chart for children and adolescents. Purpose Data regarding cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRFs) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) by body mass index (BMI) category in Korean youth are sparse. Methods Among the participants of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007–2018, 9,984 youth aged 10–18 years were included in the study. Participants were classified into 4 groups based on BMI status: normal weight, overweight, class I, and class II/III obesity. CMRF prevalence, including total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, fasting glucose, glycated hemoglobin, and MetS, were determined using the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and modified National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel (NCEP-ATP) III criteria based on BMI category. Results The prevalence of overweight, class I, class II, and class III obesity was 9.52%, 7.73%, 2.10%, and 0.32%, respectively. Mean CMRF values increased with BMI, except high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Age- and sex-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for prediction of CMRFs also increased with BMI. Background : Reduced handgrip strength (HGS) is associated with adverse cardiometabolic health outcomes. We examined HGS, metabolic syndrome (MetS), and insulin resistance (IR) in children and adolescents. Methods : The following population-based data from 2,797 participants (aged 10-18 years) of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2014-2018 were analyzed: complete anthropometric measures, HGS, MetS, and IR (subgroup with fasting insulin, n=555). HGS was analyzed as the combined HGS (CHGS) and the normalized CHGS (nCHGS=CHGS divided by body weight). Results : At a mean age of 14.4 years, 276 participants (9.9%) had abdominal obesity, 56 (2.0%) had MetS, and 118 (20.9%) had IR. Individual components of MetS and IR were inversely associated with the nCHGS. The odds ratios (ORs) for MetS and IR decreased significantly with higher nCHGS after adjustment for sex, age, physical activity, and sedentary times. The optimal cut-off values that predicted MetS were 0.80 kg/kg (males) and 0.71 kg/kg (females), with significant associations with MetS (OR: 7.4 in males; 5.7 in females) and IR (OR: 3.3 in males; 3.2 in females) observed when nCHGS values were lower than those cut-offs. Conclusion : HGS is associated with MetS and IR and might be a useful indicator of cardiometabolic risk factors in children and adolescents.

Background : Abdominal obesity, which is a strong indicator of cardiometabolic risk, is widely evaluated using waist circumference (WC) and waist–height ratio (WHtR). In Korea, the reference values for WC for children and adolescents were published in 2007 and need to be revised. Moreover, there is no reference for WHtR. The aim of this study was to establish new reference values for WC and WHtR in Korean children and adolescents. Methods : Data of 20,033 subjects from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007–2019) were used. Tables for reference values and the graphs of smoothed percentile curves of WC and WHtR for children and adolescents aged 2–18 years by sex were generated using the LMS method and locally estimated scatterplot smoothing regression analysis after removing extreme values. Results : Sex-specific reference tables and percentile curves for WC and WHtR were developed. In the new WC curves, the 10th, 50th, and 90th percentile lines were lower than the corresponding lines of the 2007 reference for both sexes. The WHtR curves showed sex-specific differences, although they demonstrated a relative plateau among those aged ≥10 years in both sexes. In the logistic regression analysis, the WC and WHtR z-scores showed higher odds ratios for predicting cardiometabolic risk factors than the body mass index z-score. Conclusion : New WC and WHtR reference values for Korean children and adolescents aged 2–18 years were developed using the latest statistical methods. These references will help monitor and track WC and WHtR for evaluating abdominal obesity among at-risk children and adolescents in Korea.

Abstract Hevin is a secreted extracellular matrix protein that is encoded by the SPARCL1 gene. Recent studies have shown that Hevin plays an important role in regulating synaptogenesis and synaptic plasticity. Mutations in the SPARCL1 gene increase the risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, the molecular basis of how mutations in SPARCL1 increase the risk of ASD is not been fully understood. In this study, we show that one of the SPARCL1 mutations associated with ASD impairs normal Hevin secretion. We identified Hevin mutants lacking the EF-hand motif through analyzing ASD-related mice with vulnerable spliceosome functions. Hevin deletion mutants accumulate in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), leading to the activation of unfolded protein responses. We also found that a single amino acid substitution of Trp647 with Arg in the EF-hand motif associated with a familial case of ASD causes a similar phenotype in the EF-hand deletion mutant. Importantly, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation revealed that this single amino acid substitution triggers exposure of a hydrophobic amino acid to the surface, increasing the binding of Hevin with molecular chaperons, BIP. Taken together, these data suggest that the integrity of the EF-hand motif in Hevin is crucial for proper folding and that ASD-related mutations impair the export of Hevin from the ER. Our data provide a novel mechanism linking a point mutation in the SPARCL1 gene to the molecular and cellular characteristics involved in ASD.

Abstract The development of sustainable energy technology has received considerable attention to meet the increasing energy demands and realize carbon neutrality. Hydrogen is a promising alternative energy source to replace fossil fuels and mitigate environmental issues. However, most hydrogen is produced by reforming fossil fuels, called gray hydrogen, and the production of gray hydrogen emits a large amount of carbon dioxide. As a sustainable approach, water electrolysis technology has been developed to produce high‐purity hydrogen, called green hydrogen. Among various technologies, water electrolysis equipped with an anion exchange membrane has been regarded as an attractive pathway for large‐scale H2 production at a low cost. The status of anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers is approaching toward megawatt‐scale H2 production by companies, which has the potential to become competitive technology for existing water electrolyzers (alkaline electrolyzer, proton exchange membrane electrolyser). This review article represents recent advances in the development of major components (membrane, catalyst, membrane electrode assembly) of anion exchange water electrolyzers. By recognizing the current water electrolysis performance and solving the remaining challenges, anion exchange membrane electrolysis can be a leading technology for green hydrogen production.

DesignRetrospective studyPurposeThe purpose of this retrospective study was to assess the changes in thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSH-R) antibody levels following treatment in patients with moderate-to-severe and active Graves’ orbitopathy (GO) and to investigate the correlation between these antibodies and treatment response.MethodsThe subjects of this study comprised of patients newly diagnosed with moderate-to-severe and active GO within the age range of 19 to 79 years. All participants underwent intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP) therapy for a duration of 12 weeks. Patients with a clinical activity score (CAS) decrease to or less than 3 and no symptom recurrence for at least 3months after the last dose of IVMP were classified as “Group 1”. Those with a CAS equal to or greater than 4 were classified as “Group 2”. TSH-R antibody levels were measured prior to and following IVMP treatment and treatment response was evaluated after the completion of IVMP therapy. All patients were monitored for a minimum of 6 months post-treatment, with ocular examinations and laboratory tests at the initial visit being included in the analysis.ResultsThe medical records of the 96 patients with GO were retrospectively reviewed. Seventy-five patients (78.1%) were response and 21 (21.9%) were non-responsive to IVMP treatment. A higher TSH-R antibody (TRAb) and thyroid-stimulating antibody (TSAb) following treatment were associated with a high risk of no treatment response (P = 0.017; P = 0.047, respectively). TRAb and TSAb levels before treatment were significantly related to TRAb and TSAb levels after treatment (P < 0.001, respectively). The cut-off values for the prediction of poor treatment response of the TRAb and TSAb before and after treatment were 8.305 IU/L, 5.035 IU/L and 449.5%, 361%, respectively (P = 0.027, P =0.001 and P = 0.136, P = 0.004, respectively).ConclusionIt was observed that elevated levels of TRAb and TSAb prior to IVMP treatment were positively correlated with post-treatment levels of these antibodies. Furthermore, in cases of non-response to IVMP therapy, a diminished decline in both antibodies was observed, and elevated levels of TRAb and TSAb post-treatment were found to be a significant predictor of poor treatment outcome. Measurement of TRAb and TSAb throughout the course of treatment in moderate-to-severe and active cases of GO may offer valuable insights into treatment prognosis and aid in the decision-making process regarding the potential need for increased IVMP dosage or alternative therapeutic strategies.

Abstract A cathode substrate with strong adsorption of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) has been preferred for lithium‐sulfur (Li‐S) batteries. However, the recent finding that controlled growth of lithium sulfides (Li2S) during discharge is crucial for S utilization stimulates improvement of this preference. Here, the Li2S growth and cell capacity in the LiPS binding energy landscape of cathode substrates are investigated. Specifically, Co‐based ternary oxides are employed to obtain binding energies in the range of 4.0–7.4 eV. Of these substrates, only the MnCo2O4 substrate with moderate LiPS affinity exhibits 3D Li2S growth. The MnCo2O4 cells achieve high sulfur utilization up to 84% at 0.2 C and excellent performance even under high sulfur loading/lean electrolyte conditions. In contrast, weak affinity substrates such as ZnCo2O4 and strong affinity substrates such as NiCo2O4 and CuCo2O4 exhibit low discharge capacity with 2D Li2S growth. For optimal LiPS affinity driving 3D growth, a balance between promoting LiPS adsorption and diffusion limitation in the LiPS adsorption layer is suggested.

Quinquelaophonte is a genus of laophontid harpacticoid, including 13 valid species around the world. Many of them are known to possess inter- and/or intra-individual variations in their swimming legs. During a survey of the meiofaunal biodiversity of Jeju Island in Korea, specimens of Quinquelaophonte were collected from an intertidal zone off the west coast of Jeju Island. This study examined the morphological characteristics and amplified partial sequence of four genes (18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, COX1, and CYTB). As with other Quinquelaophonte species, specimens of this new species showed variability in the chaetotaxy of their swimming legs in both sexes. There was a setal arrangement pattern in females that could be considered a standard, whereas male individuals showed two sets of the chaetotaxy on the fourth swimming legs. The molecular data confirmed that individuals belonged to a single species, regardless of morphological variations. The result of the morphological comparison showed that the new Quinquelaohponte species shared some characteristics with congeneric species but included some specific morphological characters different from its congeners. The new species was named Quinquelaophonte sominer sp. nov. and was presented with detailed descriptions, illustrations, and confocal micrographs. Furthermore, phylogenetic analyses were conducted using newly obtained data plus the sequences of other copepods and two Quinquelaophonte species. The result suggested that Q. sominer sp. nov. and two congeners were classified as branched lineages. This discovery brings the total number of species to three in the Northwest Pacific region.

Prokaryotes, the earliest forms of life on Earth, play crucial roles in global biogeochemical processes in virtually all ecosystems. The ever-increasing amount of prokaryotic genome sequencing data provides a wealth of information to examine fundamental and applied questions through systematic genome comparison. Genomic features, such as genome size and GC content, and taxonomy-centric genomic features of complete prokaryotic genomes (CPGs) are crucial for various fields of microbial research and education, yet they are often overlooked. Additionally, creating systematically curated datasets that align with research concerns is an essential yet challenging task for wet-lab researchers. In this study, we introduce CPGminer, a user-friendly tool that allows researchers to quickly and easily examine the genomic features and taxonomy of CPGs and curate genome datasets. We also provide several examples to demonstrate its practical utility in addressing descriptive questions.

A camera equipped with a transparent shield can be modeled using the pinhole camera model and residual error vectors defined by the difference between the estimated ray from the pinhole camera model and the actual three-dimensional (3D) point. To calculate the residual error vectors, we employ sparse calibration data consisting of 3D points and their corresponding 2D points on the image. However, the observation noise and sparsity of the 3D calibration points pose challenges in determining the residual error vectors. To address this, we first fit Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) operating robustly against data noise to the observed residual error vectors from the sparse calibration data to obtain dense residual error vectors. Subsequently, to improve performance in unobserved areas due to data sparsity, we use an additional constraint; the 3D points on the estimated ray should be projected to one 2D image point, called the ray constraint. Finally, we optimize the radial basis function (RBF)-based regression model to reduce the residual error vector differences with GPR at the predetermined dense set of 3D points while reflecting the ray constraint. The proposed RBF-based camera model reduces the error of the estimated rays by 6% on average and the reprojection error by 26% on average.

IntroductionThe primary treatment for active thyroid eye disease (TED) is immunosuppressive therapy with intravenous steroids. In this study, we attempted to predict responsiveness to steroid treatment in TED patients using eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost). Factors associated with steroid responsiveness were also statistically evaluated.MethodsClinical characteristics and laboratory results of 89 patients with TED who received steroid treatment were retrospectively reviewed. XGBoost was used to explore responsiveness to steroid treatment, and the diagnostic performance was evaluated. Factors contributing to the model output were investigated using the SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP), and the treatment response was investigated statistically using SPSS software.ResultsThe eXtra Gradient Boost model showed high performance, with an excellent accuracy of 0.861. Thyroid-stimulating hormone, thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol had the highest impact on the model. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that less extraocular muscle limitation and high TSI levels were associated with a high risk of poor intravenous methylprednisolone treatment response. As a result of analysis through SHAP, TSH, TSI, and LDL had the highest impact on the XGBoost modelConclusionTSI, extraocular muscle limitation, and LDL cholesterol levels may be useful in predicting steroid treatment response in patients with TED. In terms of machine learning, XGBoost showed relatively robust and reliable results for small datasets. The machine-learning model can assist in decision-making for further treatment of patients with TED.

Research on video anomaly detection has mainly been based on video data. However, many real-world cases involve users who can conceive potential normal and abnormal situations within the anomaly detection domain. This domain knowledge can be conveniently expressed as text descriptions, such as “walking” or “people fighting”, which can be easily obtained, customized for specific applications, and applied to unseen abnormal videos not included in the training dataset. We explore the potential of using these text descriptions with unlabeled video datasets. We use large language models to obtain text descriptions and leverage them to detect abnormal frames by calculating the cosine similarity between the input frame and text descriptions using the CLIP visual language model. To enhance the performance, we refined the CLIP-derived cosine similarity using an unlabeled dataset and the proposed text-conditional similarity, which is a similarity measure between two vectors based on additional learnable parameters and a triplet loss. The proposed method has a simple training and inference process that avoids the computationally intensive analyses of optical flow or multiple frames. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms unsupervised methods by showing 8% and 13% better AUC scores for the ShanghaiTech and UCFcrime datasets, respectively. Although the proposed method shows −6% and −5% than weakly supervised methods for those datasets, in abnormal videos, the proposed method shows 17% and 5% better AUC scores, which means that the proposed method shows comparable results with weakly supervised methods that require resource-intensive dataset labeling. These outcomes validate the potential of using text descriptions in unsupervised video anomaly detection.

Ion current rectification (ICR) is the ratio of ion current by forward bias to backward bias and is a critical indicator of diode performance. In previous studies, there have been many attempts to improve the performance of this ICR, but there is the intrinsic problem for geometric changes that induce ionic rectification due to fabrication problems. Additionally, the high ICR could be achieved in the narrow salt concentration range only. Here, we propose a multi-layered bipolar ionic diode based on an asymmetric nanochannel network membrane (NCNM), which is realized by soft lithography and self-assembly of homogenous-sized nanoparticles. Owing to the freely changeable geometry based on soft lithography, the ICR performance can be explored according to the variation of microchannel shape. The presented diode with multi-layered configuration shows strong ICR performance, and in a broad range of salt concentrations (0.1 mM~100 mM), steady ICR performance. It is interesting to note that when each anion-selective (AS) and cation-selective (CS) NCNM volume was similar to each optimized volume in a single-layered device, the maximum ICR was obtained. Multi-physics simulation, which reveals greater ionic concentration at the bipolar diode junction under forward bias and less depletion under backward in comparison to the single-layer scenario, supports this tendency as well. Additionally, under different frequencies and salt concentrations, a large-area hysteresis loop emerges, which indicates fascinating potential for electroosmotic pumps, memristors, biosensors, etc.

This paper proposes a near-central camera model and its solution approach. ’Near-central’ refers to cases in which the rays do not converge to a point and do not have severely arbitrary directions (non-central cases). Conventional calibration methods are difficult to apply in such cases. Although the generalized camera model can be applied, dense observation points are required for accurate calibration. Moreover, this approach is computationally expensive in the iterative projection framework. We developed a noniterative ray correction method based on sparse observation points to address this problem. First, we established a smoothed three-dimensional (3D) residual framework using a backbone to avoid using the iterative framework. Second, we interpolated the residual by applying local inverse distance weighting on the nearest neighbor of a given point. Specifically, we prevented excessive computation and the deterioration in accuracy that may occur in inverse projection through the 3D smoothed residual vectors. Moreover, the 3D vectors can represent the ray directions more accurately than the 2D entities. Synthetic experiments show that the proposed method can achieve prompt and accurate calibration. The depth error is reduced by approximately 63% in the bumpy shield dataset, and the proposed approach is noted to be two digits faster than the iterative methods.

PURPOSE Rapid urbanization has witnessed a dramatic decrease in physical activity. The purpose of this research was to explore the vulnerable inactivity group influenced by urbanization in China. METHODS Cross-sectional data from the 2015 China Health and Nutrition Survey were utilized. A total of 7,319 households, including 20,914 individuals within 12 provinces, were pooled. Seven types of physical activity were included in statistical testing. Commu-nity-level urbanization was measured on an urbanicity scale consisting of 12 dimensions. Cross-level logistic regression analysis was conducted to estimate the direct and interactive effects of individual socioeconomic statuses and community-level urbanization on a leisure time physical activity (LTPA). After removing incomplete responses, 8,617 samples were selected for the statistical analyses. RESULTS Community-level urbanization was positively related to participation probability in the LTPA. With an increase of one standard deviation (SD) in the level of urbanization, the odds of participating in the LTPA increased by approximately six times in the most urbanized areas compared with the least urbanized areas. The effect of employment status on the probability of participation in the LTPA differed across the levels of urbanization in each community. For white-collar workers who resided in the most urbanized communities, the odds of participating in the LTPA decreased by approximately 46% compared to their peers in the least urbanized communities. CONCLUSIONS Community-level urbanization should be addressed when developing interventions and health policies to promote physical activity during leisure time, especially for individuals who are white-collar workers living in urbanized communities.

Abstract To provide a unique opportunity for on‐chip scaled bioelectronics, a symmetrically gated metal‐oxide electric double layer transistor (EDLT) with ion‐gel (IG) gate dielectric and simple in‐plane Corbino electrode architecture is proposed. Using amorphous indium‐gallium‐zinc oxide (a‐IGZO) semiconductor and IG dielectric layers, low‐voltage driven EDLTs with high ionotronic effects can be realized. More importantly, in contrast to the conventional asymmetric rectangular EDLTs which can cause non‐uniform potential variation in the active channel layer and eventually degrade the sensing performance, the new symmetrical in‐plane type EDLTs achieve high and spatially uniform ion responsive behaviors. The symmetrically gated a‐IGZO EDLTs exhibited a responsivity of 129.4% to 5 ppm mercury (Hg2+) ions which are approximately three times higher than that with conventional electrode structure (responsivity of 38.5%). To confirm the viability of the new device architectures and the findings, the detailed mechanism of the symmetric gating effects in the in‐plane EDLTs with a variety of electrical characterization and 3D fine element analysis simulations is also discussed.

Background: Given the high prevalence of physical inactivity among Asian immigrants and its potential negative effects on health, more attention should be paid to identifying factors that might affect their participation in leisure time physician activity (LTPA). This study examined how perceived environmental characteristics are related to self-efficacy and LTPA among Asian immigrants in the United States. Methods: This cross-sectional study collected data from an on-line survey administered through Qualtrics, a web-based survey software company. In the data analysis, 512 Asian immigrants were included. As independent variables, we assessed perceived environmental characteristics with regard to the perceived accessibility of LTPA-related sites and neighborhood quality. As mediating and outcome variables, we measured self-efficacy and LTPA, respectively. Using AMOS version 22, a path analysis was conducted to measure model fit. Results: The perceived accessibility of the LTPA-related sites (b = 0.10, P = 0.04) and self-efficacy(b = 0.26, P = 0.001) were positively related to LTPA. Perceived neighborhood quality (b = 0.11,P = 0.012 was positively associated with self-efficacy, yet not directly associated with LTPA. Self-efficacy mediated the relationship between the perceived accessibility of LTPA-related sites and LTPA (estimate=0.036, 95% CI=0.015–0.067, P = 0.003). Conclusion: This study suggests that perceiving easy access to LTPA-related sites and living in quality neighborhoods can encourage people to participate in LTPA more often by increasing their self-efficacy toward LTPA. These findings highlight a need for public infrastructural investments to improve accessibility to LTPA-related resources and neighborhood quality, which can potentially increase self-efficacy and promote LTPA among Asian immigrants.

Background: It is well-documented that active coping strategies can lead to better positive adjustment and psycho-social outcomes among individuals with disabilities and illnesses. However, little information exists related to exploring how coping is related to health benefits such as personal growth and life satisfaction in an international context. Thus, this study examined how the use of coping strategies is associated with personal growth and life satisfaction among individuals with physical disabilities in non-Western settings. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we employed a nonprobability methodology, purposivesampling, to recruit 351 participants who adults over the age of 18 living with a physicaldisability and currently enrolled in the Korean Disability Association. A hierarchical linearregression analysis was conducted to determine which types of coping strategies predictedpersonal growth and life satisfaction, while controlling for the effects of the demographicvariables (i.e., gender and age). Results: With regard to personal growth, problem-solving coping strategy (β = 0.663, P < 0.001,95% CI [0.51, 0.70]) was the strongest predictor, followed by avoidance coping strategy(β = -0.263, P < 0.001, 95% CI [-0.37, -0.20]). As for life satisfaction, problem-solving copingstrategy (β = 0.268, P < 0.001, 95% CI [0.18, 0.70]) was the strongest predictor, followed bysocial support seeking coping strategy (β = 0.264, P < 0.001, 95% CI [-0.19, 0.10]). Conclusion: Our study suggests that problem-focused and social support coping strategies playimportant roles in improving the personal growth and life satisfaction among Korean individualswith physical disabilities. This study provides implications for health professionals seeking waysto facilitate the personal growth and enhance the life satisfaction of individuals with physicaldisabilities.

Background: People with cancer often report high levels of negative psychological symptoms and poor perception of health due to cancer treatment and activity limitations. Prior studies have suggested that participation in leisure time physical activity (LTPA) can reduce negative psychological symptoms and improve health perception. However, a few studies have examined the contribution of LTPA to health benefits among people with cancer. Thus, we aimed to examine how a different level of LTPA engagement contributed to mental health and health perceptions among people with cancer. Methods: Using the 2017 Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) data, cross sectional data of 504 respondents diagnosed with any types of 22 cancers listed in the survey questionnaire were analyzed. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used to test for mean differences in mental health and health perception among the three different LTPA groups(i.e., inactive, moderately active, and vigorously active groups). Results: Results indicated that people with cancer who reported higher levels of LTPA scored higher on mental health and health perception than those with lower levels of LTPA (Pillai’s trace= 0.060, F (4,944) = 15.06, P < 0.001). Conclusion: This finding suggests that individuals with cancer gained more health benefits through high engagement in LTPA. Moreover, we suggested that LTPA can be used as an important therapeutic intervention to promote health quality and wellbeing among people with cancer. Implications for practical suggestions are further discussed.
