Patients and methods: A total of 184 patients suspected with urolithiasis who had undergone NCCT and US radiologic investigation from 2015 to 2017 were enrolled in this study. The sensitivity, specificity, and stone size measured in US were validated by NCCT. Data of the stone size in US were classified into four groups (0–3.5, 3.6–5, 5.1–10, >10 mm) and then compared with NCCT data. Results: In 184 patients, NCCT detected 276 (97.2%) stones, while US could identify 213 (75.5%) stones. Overall sensitivity and specificity of US were 75.4% and 16.7%, respectively. Detection rate of mid and distal ureteral stone was lower than that at other locations. The detection rate increased with the stone size. About 73% concordance was obtained for the stone size measured by US and NCCT (Pearson’s correlation coefficient was 0.841). Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common oral disorder that despite extensive"nresearches, the etiology of this phenomenon is still unknown. Because this phenomenon has been observed"nmore often in families than in individual cases, genetic influence has been investigated in most researches."nPurpose: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between Human Leukocyte Antigen"n(HLA) and aphthous stomatitis more precisely."nMaterials and Methods: in this study, 60 patients with RAS were examined for HLA-A and HLA- B types"nand 37 of them were examined for HLA- DR and HLA-DQ types. The results were compared through Fisher"ntest with those of 25 healthy control subjects, aged more than 30 years."nResults: A significant decrease in the frequency of some antigens such as HLA-DQW 3 and HLA-A 26 in"nsubjects with RAS was observed. Therefore, according to the results of this study, these antigens were"nconsidered as resistant antigens to recurrent aphthous stomatitis. In contrast, there was no significant increase"nin the frequency of any HLA antigens in the test group, compared to the control group. This finding is in"ncontrast with the multiple reports about Behcet's disease. (Because a high frequency of HLA-B 51 has been"nfound in Behcet's syndrome.)"nConclusion: According to the findings of this study, it is suggested that the pathogenicity of aphthous"nulcerations in Behcet's disease and recurrent aphthous stomatitis is not the same. However, further studies are"nnecessary to prove this theory.

Helicobacter pylori infection causes gastric and duodenal ulcer. However recurrence of"ninfection after eradication would suggest the existence of other reinfecting sources in the gastrointestinal"ntract (Gl). The aim of this study was to assess the existence ofhelicobacter pylori in dental plaques of"npatients harboring Helicobacter pylori in their GI tract. Antral biopsies were taken from 40 patients with"nGl problems and cultured. Samples were also taken from dental plaques of patients with positive"nHelicobacter pylori culture under microaerophilic conditions and evaluated by polymerase chain reaction"n(PCR) reamplification. The mean age of patients was 40 years; 24 (60%) male and 16 (40%) female. The"nresults obtained from dental plaque cultures, which analysed by PCR were all negative, however 7"n(17.5%) cases were found positive by PCR reamplification. The results showed that Helicobacter pylori"ncould exist in dental plaque and PCR reamplification could be used for its detection as a more sensitive"ntechnique. More research should be conducted to examine any relation between the existence of"nHelicobacter pylori in dental plaques and recurrent GI disorders.

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic and common disease of the oral mucosa, which its"netiology, phathogenesis and exact treatment is not definitely known. T-cell mediated immunity is the"nmost probable factor in pathogenesis of OLP. Since TNF-a primarily, as a cytokine, interfers T-Cell"nmediated immunopathologic reactions, it may also interfere with pathogenesis of OLP."nIn an observational case- control study, the values of TNF-a in serum of OLP patients were measured"nand compared with the values of healthy cases. 30 OLP patients and 30 healthy controls have examined"nwith ELISA technique. Data was obtained by observation questionnaire and examination."nThe mean value of TNF-a in case and control groups were 26.2 and 7.9 pg/ml, respectively, which"nshowed significant difference (PO.005)."nConsidering the TNF-a values with respect to sex and age did not show any significant difference,"nhowever the lower TNF-a value was obtained with increasing the age, and higher value observed in"nfemales. Higher values of TNF-a found in OLP patients compared with control group. It means TNF-a is"nan effective factor in OLP. Due to these findings new treatment protocols have been suggested.

Objective (s): The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of HCV and high-risk behaviors in drug addiction inmates.Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional prevalence study of HCV infection in drug addiction inmates who were admitted to a prison in Guilan province, north of Iran, between September 2003 and October 2003. Subjects were asked questions regarding risk behaviors for HCV, and blood was drawn for HCV antibody testing using an enzyme- linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA III) and positive samples rechecked.Results: Four hundred sixty inmates participated in this seroprevalence study. The mean age of respondents was 34.7± 8.9 SD, (range from 18 to 65) years. Duration of addict was 9.6 ± 8 SD years and 51.7% were opium addict, 18.3% heroin addict, 12.4% cannabis addict and others had addiction to more than one substance. The HCV risk behaviors were common in this population: intravenous drug use (18.6%), intranasal drug use (56.2%) and tattoos (56.1%). Two- hundred nine study subjects (45.4%) were HCV antibody positive that this rate was 88.9% among IV drug abusers. Advancements in bone tissue engineering critically depend on the development of specialized scaffolds that promote effective bone regeneration. This study introduces innovative scaffolds composed of poly (glycerol azelaic acid) (PGAz) and poly (caprolactone) (PCL), enhanced with varying concentrations of phosphate modified cellulose (PMC) nanofibers. Utilizing citric acid as a green cross-linker enhances the eco-friendliness and biocompatibility of these scaffolds. The molecular structures were verified using Hydrogen 1 H NMR and Carbon 13 CNMR spectroscopy. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy confirmed successful integration of vital phosphate groups for biological functionality. Morphological and compositional analysis through Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Energy-Dispersive X-ray (EDX) mapping revealed homogeneous phosphate distribution and increased porosity across the scaffolds. Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) demonstrated that higher PMC concentrations improve thermal stability, enhancing scaffold resilience. Mechanical testing showed that scaffolds with 5 % PMC provide an optimal balance of compressive strength, compressive modulus, and compressive strain, suitable for bone tissue engineering. Dynamic water contact angle studies highlighted significant hydrophilic enhancements, crucial for cell attachment and proliferation. Hydrolytic degradation tests indicated that increased PMC accelerates degradation rates, aligning with tissue regeneration timelines. Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining and MTT assays, along with FESEM imaging of L929 mouse fibroblast cells cultured on the scaffolds, confirmed biocompatibility and cellular proliferation, particularly with 5 % PMC. Pancreatic cancer (PaC) incidence is increasing, but our current screening and diagnostic strategies are not very effective. However, screening could be helpful in the case of PaC, as recent evidence shows that the disease progresses gradually. Unfortunately, there is no ideal screening method or program for detecting PaC in its early stages. Conventional imaging techniques, such as abdominal ultrasound, CT, MRI, and EUS, have not been successful in detecting early-stage PaC. On the other hand, biomarkers may be a more effective screening tool for PaC and have greater potential for further evaluation compared to imaging. Recent studies on biomarkers and artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced imaging have shown promising results in the early diagnosis of PaC. In addition to proteins, non-coding RNAs are also being studied as potential biomarkers for PaC. This review consolidates the current literature on PaC screening modalities to provide an organized framework for future studies. While conventional imaging techniques have not been effective in detecting early-stage PaC, biomarkers and AI-enhanced imaging are promising avenues of research. Background and Aims: Before performing any surgical or endovascular procedure, the anatomical classification of the patient is essential for treatment planning. Computed Tomographic Angiography (CTA) is a standard method to evaluate thoracic aortic anatomy and associated variations., Methods: This cross-sectional, descriptive study was performed among adult participants without any peripheral vascular diseases undergoing thoracic CTA. Demographic data were collected along with factors retrieved from the patients CTA, such as the type of aortic arch, length, and diameter of ascending and descending aorta, the diameter of the main branches and the distance between branches, the angles by which the main arteries rise from their origins, and left anterior oblique angle of the aortic arch., Results: 164 patients, with a mean age of 57 ± 19.3 years, entered the study. 53 (33.8%) had a bovine arch, which was mostly observed among males. A decrease in the frequency of type I arch and also an increase in the frequency of type 2 and 3 arches was observed with the increase in age ( p  < 0.001). The BCT diameter had a direct association with both left common carotid artery diameter ( r  = 0.478, p  < 0.001) and left subclavian artery diameter ( r  = 0.470, p  < 0.001). The length of the descending aorta had a direct correlation ( r  = 0.294, p  < 0.001) with the length of the ascending aorta., Conclusion: Complex endovascular interventions are vital method in treating aorta, head, and neck pathologies. Purpos: The location of infraorbital foramen (IOF) and the prevalence of accessory IOF vary among different populations. It may lead to infraorbital nerve (ION) blockage during surgery. This study aimed to assess the IOF location and AIOF frequency in Iranian people., Method: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, 500 paranasal sinus computed tomography scans of adults were examined using the INFINITT PACS system., Result: The distance from IOF to infraorbital margin (IOM), mid-pupillary line (MPL), midsagittal line (MSL), canine eminence (CE), and skin thickness (ST) was 8.97 ± 1.79, 5.73 ± 1.84, 24.86 ± 2.23, 20.39 ± 3.47, and 10.90 ± 2.59 mm, respectively. The vertical and transverse diameters of the foramen were 3.03 ± 0.65 and 3.71 ± 0.76 mm, respectively. In addition, the shape of 63.5% of the foramina was oval. The prevalence of AIOF was 9%, and its most common location was superomedial to IOF., Conclusion: We believe that in this study, landmarks like IOM, MPL, MSL, CE and ST could help the clinicians localize IOF and improve the ION anesthesia success rate. Furthermore, the occurrence of AIOF should be considered by physicians to reduce the chance of injuries to the infraorbital neurovascular complex., (© 2024. Key Clinical Message: This case highlights the diagnostic pitfalls that can occur when evaluating complex cystic renal masses. Distinguishing epidermoid cysts from renal cell carcinoma is difficult but imperative to guide conservative management when appropriate, avoiding unnecessary nephrectomy., Abstract: Renal epidermoid cysts are extremely rare, with only 12 cases reported in the literature. Their radiographic features often resemble cystic renal cell carcinoma, frequently prompting unnecessary nephrectomy. A 64-year-old man with a history of nephrolithiasis presented with left flank pain and hematuria. Imaging revealed a complex cystic renal mass suspicious for renal cell carcinoma. Following left radical nephrectomy, histopathology examination revealed a benign epidermoid cyst. Renal presentation of epidermoid cyst poses unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Possible pathogenesis includes ectopic epidermal implantation during embryogenesis or squamous metaplasia following chronic irritation or deficiency. Radiographic distinction from concerning entities like renal cell carcinoma is difficult but imperative to avoid extensive surgery. This case highlights the diagnostic pitfalls and management considerations for renal epidermoid cysts. Background: This study aimed to determine the therapeutic efficacy of curcumin nanoemulsion (CUR-NE) in mice infected with Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto protoscoleces., Methods: Forty-two inbred BALB/c mice were divided into seven groups of six animals each. Six groups were inoculated intra-peritoneally with 1500 viable E. granulosus protoscoleces, followed for six months and used as infected groups. The infected groups were named as: CEI1 to CEI6 accordingly. The 7th group was not inoculated and was named cystic echinococcosis noninfected group (CENI7). CEI1 and CEI2 groups received 40 mg/kg/day and 20 mg/kg/day curcumin nanoemulsion (CUR-NE), respectively. CEI3 received nanoemulsion without curcumin (NE-no CUR), CEI4 received curcumin suspension (CUR-S) 40 mg/kg/day, CEI5 received albendazole 150 mg/kg/day and CEI6 received sterile phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). CENI7 group received CUR-NE 40 mg/kg/day. Drugs administration was started after six months post-inoculations of protoscoleces and continued for 60 days in all groups. The secondary CE cyst area was evaluated by computed tomography (CT) scan for each mouse before treatment and on the days 30 and 60 post-treatment. The CT scan measurement results were compared before and after treatment. After the euthanasia of the mice on the 60th day, the cyst area was also measured after autopsy and, the histopathological changes of the secondary cysts for each group were observed. The therapeutic efficacy of CUR-NE in infected groups was evaluated by two methods: CT scan and autopsied cyst measurements., Results: Septal calcification in three groups of infected mice (CEI1, CEI2, and CEI4) was revealed by CT scan. The therapeutic efficacy of CUR-NE 40 mg/kg/day (CEI1 group) was 24.6 ± 26.89% by CT scan measurement and 55.16 ± 32.37% by autopsied cysts measurements. The extensive destructive effects of CUR-NE 40 mg/kg/day (CEI1 group) on the wall layers of secondary CE cysts were confirmed by histopathology., Conclusion: The current study demonstrated a significant therapeutic effect of CUR-NE (40 mg/kg/day) on secondary CE cysts in BALB/c mice. An apparent septal calcification of several cysts revealed by CT scan and the destructive effect on CE cysts observed in histopathology are two critical key factors that suggest curcumin nanoemulsion could be a potential treatment for cystic echinococcosis., (© 2024. Applying sewage sludge in agricultural soils is an interesting source of organic matter. This study aimed to monitor concentrations of heavy elements in soil and guar plants, which can pose a risk to the health of humans and animals if they enter the food chain through the soil-plant system. The experiment revealed that applying sludge increased the amount of organic matter, total nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus in the soil. Additionally, the concentration of heavy metals such as Pb, Co, Cr, Ni, Cu, and Zn in all treatments remained below the permissible limits for soil. The highest plant height and plant dry weight were recorded in the sludge and sludge + fertilizer treatments. The dry weight of the guar varied from 629 g m -1 in the control treatment to 1050 g m -1 in the sludge + fertilizer plots. The use of sludge increased the accumulation of heavy metals in the above-ground parts of the guar plant compared to the control. However, the level of heavy metal remained within the normal range and below the toxic concentration. Our results also showed that the application of sludge along with fertilizer improved the quality of the guar forage by increasing the levels of crude protein, digestible dry matter and water-soluble carbohydrates. Overall, the results indicated that using sludge as organic fertilizer can improve soil properties, reduce the use of inorganic fertilizers, and decrease the harmful effects of heavy metals on the environment and health in the research area., (© 2024. Introduction and Importance: Osteoma is a benign, and usually asymptomatic bone tumor normally found in the skull and facial bones, although it can occasionally occur in the long bones and spine., Case Presentation: In this article, we present a 49-year-old male patient who experienced progressive neck pain accompanied by left-sided radicular pain symptoms. Clinical investigation using various imaging techniques confirmed a bone-forming lesion located within the C1 vertebrae region. Treatment involved performing hemilaminectomy of C1 along with resection for complete removal of this extradural bone lesion, ultimately achieving symptom relief. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen leads to the diagnosis of osteoma. Along with reporting this case, we conducted a comprehensive literature review of the previously reported spinal osteoma cases., Clinical Discussion: Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of osteoma. A comprehensive literature review was conducted, revealing 16 previously reported cases of spinal osteoma. Among these, only one case involved the C1 vertebra and presented similar neurological symptoms. The review underscores the rarity of spinal osteomas and the importance of surgical intervention for symptom relief., Conclusion: Spinal osteomas are rare but should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with neck pain and radicular symptoms. Surgical removal of the lesion is often necessary for symptom relief, as highlighted by our case and supported by the literature review. Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is one of the most important helminthic diseases in the world with different genotypes distribution. The application of specific genotype antigens together with sera from patients with specific cyst genotypes have not been reported, so far. The present study aimed to apply and evaluate native AgB from Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto (Eg) and Echinococcus canadensis (Ec) alone or mixture for serodiagnosis of human G1-G3 and G6/G7 genotypes cystic echinococcosis sera, using ELISA and Western blotting. A total of 47 human sera along with 47 human CE cysts were collected. CE genotypes were determined. Native AgB were prepared from E. granulosus s.s and E. canadensis genotypes. ELISA and Western blot were performed on human specific G1-G3 and G6/G7 genotypes sera. Species specific native AgB were used alone or mixed. The sensitivity of ELISA using alone and mixed 1Eg-1Ec, 1Eg-2Ec, and 2Eg-1Ec of native AgB from E. granulosus s.s and E. canadensis genotypes for human G1-G3 sera were 92.10, 89.47, 97.37, 100, and 100%, respectively; while using AgBs, alone and mixed for human G6/G7 sera were 100%. The sensitivity of Western blotting using native AgB of E. granulosus s.s and E. canadensis genotypes alone and mixed 2Eg-1Ec were 78.95% and 100% for human G1-G3 and G6/G7 genotypes sera, respectively. The mixture of AgB from Echinoccus granulosus sensu stricto and Echinococcus canadensis genotypes increased ELISA sensitivity for the diagnosis of human CE. Background: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is an important zoonotic parasitic disease caused by the larval stage or metacestode of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. Due to treatment protocols for different liver cysts, diagnosis of cyst stages is very important. Different antigens have been used for CE diagnosis. However, each one is more sensitive and effective for the diagnosis of specific CE stages is not known well. We aimed to compare Native Hydatid Cyst Fluid (HCF), Lyophilized Hydatid Cyst Fluid (LHCF), antigen B (AgB) and Lyophilized antigen B (LAgB) originated from E. granulosus sensu stricto (G1-G3) genotype, for sero- diagnosis of active, transitional and inactive human liver CE using ELISA technique., Methods: The HCF was collected aseptically from liver CE cysts of sheep slaughtered from 2018 to 2019 in Shiraz slaughterhouse, Southern, Iran. The cysts were characterized by PCR and sequencing for genotype specification. Four types of antigens were used: HCF, LHCF, AgB and LAgB originated from E. granulosus sensu stricto (G1-G3) genotype. Thirty-three serum samples from active, transitional, and inactive human cysts were collected. Overall, 48 samples from other parasitic diseases and 60 samples from healthy subjects as negative controls were checked using four antigens by ELISA method., Results: The best diagnostic sensitivity with 96.97% was observed by anti-LHCF IgG ELISA test. The best specificity with 95.37% was observed in ELISA test using LAgB., Conclusion: Simultaneous test of sera with anti-LHCF IgG ELISA and anti-LAgB IgG ELISA would be the best in the diagnosis of human liver cystic echinococcosis., (Copyright © 2023 Sadjjadi et al. Poly (glycerol sebacate citrate) (PGSC) has potential applications in tissue engineering due to its biodegradability and suitable elasticity. However, its applications are restricted owing to its acidity and high degradation rate. In this study, a new bio-nanocomposite based on PGSC has been synthesized by incorporating chitosan (CS) and various concentrations of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (n-HA). It is assumed that the basicity of a CS and hydroxyl groups of n-HA will reduce the acidity of PGSC and control the rate of degradation. Also, the biocompatibility of n-HA and inherent hydrophilicity of CS can improve cell adhesion and proliferation of PGSC-based scaffolds. FTIR, XRD, FESEM, and EDX tests confirmed the synthesis of these nanocomposites and the interaction between each of the components. The results of the DMTA test also indicated the elastic behavior of the samples embedded with n-HA. The hydrophilicity assay demonstrated that the water contact angle of the scaffolds decreased as the concentration of n-HA augmented, and it reached the value of 44 ± 0.9° for nanocomposite containing 5 wt.% n-HA. The degradation rate of all PGSC nanocomposites was reduced due to the anionic groups of n-HA and CS. TGA assay indicated that the incorporation of n-HA led to the enhancement of scaffolds' thermal stability. Furthermore, the synergistic effect of CS and n-HA on the enhancement of protein adsorption and cell proliferation was confirmed through protein adhesion and MTT assay, respectively. Consequently, the addition of n-HA and CS perform the new bio-nanocomposites scaffolds based on PGSC with sufficient hydrophilicity, flexibility, and thermal stability in tissue engineering applications.

This study has attempted to systematically investigate the influence of nanoclay and graphene oxide (GO) on thermal, mechanical, hydrophobic, and, most importantly, biological properties of poly(glycerol sebacate)/gelatin (PGS/gel) nanocomposites. The PGS/gel copolymer nanocomposites were successfully synthesized via in situ polymerization, approved by rudimentary characterization methods. The nanofillers were appropriately dispersed within the elastomeric matrix according to morphological studies. Also, the fillers posed as a hydrophobic entity that slightly decreased the hydrophilic properties of PGS/gel. This could be sensed clearly in hybrid composite due to the robust network of GO and clay. Water contact angle values for gelatin-contained nanocomposites were reported in the range of 38.42° to 66.7°, indicating the hydrophilic nature of the prepared samples. Thermal and mechanical studies of nanocomposites displayed rather contradicting results as the former improved while a slight decrease in the latter was noticed compared to the pristine specimens. In dry conditions, their storage modulus was in the range of 0.94-6.4 MPa, making them suitable for mimicking some soft tissues. The swelling ratio for nanocomposites containing nanoparticles was associated with an ascending trend so that GO improved the swelling rate by up to 45%. Biological analyses, such as Ames and in vitro cell viability tests, exhibited promising outcomes. As for the mutagenesis effect, the PGS and hybrid samples showed negative results. The presence of functional groups on the nanofillers' surface positively influenced the cells' metabolic activity as well as its attachment to the matrix. After 7 days, the cell proliferation rate resulted in an 82% improvement for the GO-containing nanocomposite, significantly higher than its neat counterpart (65%). Background: Metastasis is an important factor in the survival estimate of patients with breast cancer. The present study aimed to examine the frequency of epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), estrogen receptor (ER), and progesterone receptor (PR) expression in relation to the metastatic site, pattern, and tumor size in patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC)., Methods: In this retrospective study, the medical records of patients diagnosed with MBC at Motahari Clinic (Shiraz, Iran) during 2017-2019 were examined. Metastasis was confirmed using computed tomography, and a total of 276 patients were included in the study. Based on the expression of receptors, the patients were categorized into luminal A, luminal B, HER2, and TNBC groups. The frequency and percentage of receptors in relation to the metastatic site, size, and pattern were compared using the Chi square test. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant., Results: The frequency of receptor positivity in the 276 selected medical records were of the subtype HER2-enriched (n=48), luminal A (n=43), luminal B (n=146), and TNBC (n=39). The most common metastatic sites were the bones (47.1%), lungs (34.4%), liver (27.9%), brain (20.3%), and other organs (12.7%). The first site of metastasis occurred in the bones (36.6%), lungs (17.4%), liver (15.6%), brain (10.5%), and other organs (7.6%). The frequency of receptor expression was different in relation to the first metastatic site (P=0.024). There was a statistically significant difference between the frequency of receptor expression in patients with bone (P=0.036), brain (P=0.031), and lung (P=0.020) metastases. The frequency of receptor expression was also significantly different in relation to the size of liver metastasis (P=0.009). In-out surface modification of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) has been successfully performed by taking advantage of 8-hydroxyquinolines in the lumen of HNTs and precisely synthesized aniline oligomers (AO) of different lengths (tri- and pentamer) anchored on the external surface of the HNTs. Several analyses, including FTIR, H-NMR, TGA, UV-visible spectroscopy, and SEM, were used to establish the nature of the HNTs' surface engineering. Nanoparticles were incorporated into epoxy resin at 0.1 wt.% loading for investigation of the contribution of surface chemistry to epoxy cure behavior and kinetics. Nonisothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) data were fed into home-written MATLAB codes, and isoconversional approaches were used to determine the apparent activation energy ( E α ) as a function of the extent of cure reaction (α). Compared to pristine HNTs, AO-HNTs facilitated the densification of an epoxy network. Pentamer AO-HNTs with longer arms promoted an Excellent cure; with an E α value that was 14% lower in the presence of this additive than for neat epoxy, demonstrating an enhanced cross-linking. The model also predicted a triplet of cure ( m , n , and ln A ) for autocatalytic reaction order, non-catalytic reaction order, and pre-exponential factor, respectively, by the Arrhenius equation. The enhanced autocatalytic reaction in AO-HNTs/epoxy was reflected in a significant rise in the value of m, from 0.11 to 0.28. Kinetic models reliably predict the cure footprint suggested by DSC measurements.

Purpose: We aim to review our experience of transperitoneal laparoscopic ureterolithotomy (TPLU) for proximal ureteric stone more than 15 mm., Patients and Methods: Between June 2017 to December 2020, sixty patients with a history of unsuccessful Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) and/or failed ureteroscopy for impacted ureteral calculi more than 15 mm who accepted TPLU were enrolled in our study. The patients' demographic information and post-treatment results were gathered and analyzed, retrospectively., Results: The patients' mean age was 46.25 ± 12.56 years. The mean size of the stone was 20.11 ± 4.76 mm. 37 (61.7%) patients had severe hydronephrosis (HDN) and 46 (76.7%) stones were radio-opaque. Almost all of the patients underwent TPLU by a single urologist. The mean operation time was 72.86 ± 6.07 minutes without intraoperative complication (only 3 stones had upward migration to the pyelocaliceal system). The main operative blood loss was 88.86 ml. The average length of stay in the hospital was 45.8 ± 8.11 hours. The stone free rate (SFR) at discharge was 57 (95%). The overall complication rate was 27 (45%). Regarding early complications, fever was found in 8 (13.3%) patients, and 3 patients (5%) had paralytic ileus. The rate of urine leak was 8.3%, and 8 (13.3%) patients required blood transfusions. In multivariate analysis, the multiple stones, bigger stone in size, incomplete SFR, longer duration of hospital admission, and severe HDN were associated with a high early complication rate (p = 0.05, 0.04, < 001, 0.03, and 0.01, respectively)., Conclusions: TPLU is a harmless option for managing proximal ureteric stone as a primary procedure or salvage procedure with good outcomes and acceptable complication rates.

Introduction: Rapid diagnosis of maxillofacial abscess with the odontogenic origin is effective in the treatment of patients. This study aimed to check the clinical evaluation, head, and neck computed tomography (CT) scan, and microbial sensitivity of hospitalized patients diagnosed with maxillofacial abscess admitted to the Maxillofacial Surgery Ward Shaheed Rajaie Surgical Acute Care Center of Shiraz, Iran from 2019-2021., Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted. The sample included patients diagnosed with the abscess of odontogenic origin. Data collection tools included personal profile registration form, chief complainant and clinical evaluation, laboratory test results, pus culture, antibiogram results, and head and neck CT scan changes form. Data was reported with descriptive statistics by SPSS-16 software., Results: The majority of patients were male; infection duration was 10 days; maximum mouth opening size was less than 20 mm in more than half of patients. The scan revealed 41.8% abscess, 36.4% cellulite, and 21.8% mixed abscess and cellulitis. There was 29.1% involvement of salivary glands. The majority of abscesses were unifocal involved in the submandibular space, and the least involvement was in peri mandibular space and carotid sheath. The most common organism causing was staphylococcal abscess coagulase-negative., Conclusion: In patients with maxillofacial abscess requiring hospitalization, the most common clinical features were trismus, toxic appearance, and dysphagia, and the most common source of abscess in scanning patients with mandibular molars was the most involved submandibular space and pterygomandibular space. The treatments for multiple sclerosis (MS) have improved over the past 25 years, but now the main question for physicians is deciding who should receive treatment, for how long, and when to switch to other options. These decisions are typically based on treatment tolerance and a reasonable expectation of long-term efficacy. A significant unmet need is the lack of accurate laboratory measurements for diagnosis, and monitoring of treatment response, including deterioration and disease progression. There are few validated biomarkers for MS, and in practice, physicians employ two biomarkers discovered fifty years ago for MS diagnosis, often in combination with MRI scans. These biomarkers are intrathecal IgG and oligoclonal bands in the CSF (cerebrospinal fluid). Neurofilament light chain (NfL) is a relatively new biomarker for MS diagnosis and follow up. Neurofilaments are neuron-specific cytoskeleton proteins that can be measured in various body compartments. NfL is a new biomarker for MS that can be measured in serum samples, but this still needs further study to specify the laboratory cut-off values in clinical practice. In the present review we discuss the evidence for NfL as a reliable biomarker for the early detection and management of MS. Oculocerebrocutaneous syndrome (OCCS), also known as Delleman syndrome (DS), is a rare congenital anomaly featuring focal skin defects, orbital anomalies, and central nervous system malformations. Diagnosis of Delleman syndrome is based on the triad of eye, central nervous system (CNS), and cutaneous defects and confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging. A 23-day-old girl was referred to our department for brain imaging. The infant had multiple cutaneous appendages on the right side of her face. There also was a fleshy mass measuring about 12 mm over her right eye. Brain MRI demonstrated the evidence of colpocephaly, agenesis of the corpus callosum, nodular subependymal heterotopias adjacent to the right lateral ventricle, aplasia of the cerebellar vermis, hypoplasia of the right cerebellar hemisphere, and widening of CSF space in the posterior fossa. There was also an exophytic skin lesion on her right cheek, measuring about 13 × 12 mm in size. In the orbital MRI, there was a mixed cystic solid mass measuring about 25 × 20 mm in her right orbital cavity. The orbital content was abnormal and suggestive of rudimentary orbit. Considering the findings, diagnosis of oculocerebrocutaneous syndrome (Delleman syndrome) was established for the patient. Glioblastoma is a primary brain tumor with the most metastatic effect in adults. Despite the wide range of multidimensional treatments, tumor heterogeneity is one of the main causes of tumor spread and gives great complexity to diagnostic and therapeutic methods. Therefore, featuring noble noninvasive prognostic methods that are focused on glioblastoma heterogeneity is perceived as an urgent need. Imaging neuro-oncological biomarkers including MGMT (O 6 -methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase) promoter methylation status, tumor grade along with other tumor characteristics and demographic features (e.g., age) are commonly referred to during diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic processes. Therefore, the use of new noninvasive prognostic methods focused on glioblastoma heterogeneity is considered an urgent need. Some neuronal biomarkers, including the promoter methylation status of the promoter MGMT, the characteristics and grade of the tumor, along with the patient's demographics (such as age and sex) are involved in diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Among the wide array of imaging techniques, magnetic resonance imaging combined with the more physiologically detailed technique of H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy can be useful in diagnosing neurological cancer patients. In addition, intracranial tumor qualitative analysis and sometimes tumor biopsies help in accurate diagnosis. Background: Diagnosis of COVID-19 can be challenging in trauma patients, especially those with chest trauma and lung contusion., Methods: We present a case series of patients from February and March 2020 who were admitted to our trauma center at Rajaee Hospital Trauma Center, in Shiraz, Iran and had positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR test or chest CT scan suggestive of COVID-19 and were admitted to the specific ICU for COVID-19., Results: Eight COVID-19 patients (6 male) with mean age of 40 (SD = 16.3) years old, were presented. All patients were cases of trauma injuries, with multiple injuries including chest trauma and lung contusion, admitted to our trauma center for management of their injuries, but they were diagnosed with COVID-19 as well. Two of them had coinfection of influenza type-B and SARS-CoV-2. All patients were treated for COVID-19 and three of them died; the rest were discharged from hospital., Conclusion: Since PCR for SARS-CoV-2 is not always sensitive enough to confirm the cause of pneumonia, chest CT manifestations can be helpful, though, they are not always differentiable from lung contusion. The entities of real-world networks are connected via different types of connections (i.e., layers). The task of link prediction in multiplex networks is about finding missing connections based on both intra-layer and inter-layer correlations. Our observations confirm that in a wide range of real-world multiplex networks, from social to biological and technological, a positive correlation exists between connection probability in one layer and similarity in other layers. Accordingly, a similarity-based automatic general-purpose multiplex link prediction method-SimBins-is devised that quantifies the amount of connection uncertainty based on observed inter-layer correlations in a multiplex network. Moreover, SimBins enhances the prediction quality in the target layer by incorporating the effect of link overlap across layers. Applying SimBins to various datasets from diverse domains, our findings indicate that SimBins outperforms the compared methods (both baseline and state-of-the-art methods) in most instances when predicting links. Furthermore, it is discussed that SimBins imposes minor computational overhead to the base similarity measures making it a potentially fast method, suitable for large-scale multiplex networks.

Regenerative medicine offers the potential to repair or substitute defective tissues by constructing active tissues to address the scarcity and demands for transplantation. The method of forming 3D constructs made up of biomaterials, cells, and biomolecules is called bioprinting. Bioprinting of stem cells provides the ability to reliably recreate tissues, organs, and microenvironments to be used in regenerative medicine. 3D bioprinting is a technique that uses several biomaterials and cells to tailor a structure with clinically relevant geometries and sizes. This technique's promise is demonstrated by 3D bioprinted tissues, including skin, bone, cartilage, and cardiovascular, corneal, hepatic, and adipose tissues. Several bioprinting methods have been combined with stem cells to effectively produce tissue models, including adult stem cells, embryonic stem cells (ESCs), induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), and differentiation techniques. In this review, technological challenges of printed stem cells using prevalent naturally derived bioinks (e.g., carbohydrate polymers and protein-based polymers, peptides, and decellularized extracellular matrix), recent advancements, leading companies, and clinical trials in the field of 3D bioprinting are delineated.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) aerogel owing to its porous and 3D structure, poses a suitable matrix for embedding nanomaterials and polymers. Herein, BC composites comprising nano-clay/polyaniline (PANI) were synthesized via a two-step procedure. Clay nanoplatelets were dispersed in the BC membrane to form a nanofibrillated template for aniline in-situ polymerization leading to formation of a double interconnected network of electrically conductive path within the aerogel. Deposition of PANI particles on BC/clay nanocomposite was confirmed by FTIR, XRD, FESEM, and EDX techniques. The surface electrical conductivity of 0.49 S/cm was obtained for the composite aerogel comprising 5 wt% nano-clay which is 16 folds higher than that of the sample without nano-clay. Thermal stability and storage modulus of the aerogels was improved by inclusion of PANI and nano-clay. Synergistic effect of clay and polyaniline on biocompatibility and cell adhesion was obtained with no mutagenic or carcinogenic effects. HIV coinfected with other parasitic diseases may cause a serious problem for the patients. A few case reports describing echinococcosis with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection have been reported in the world; however, it has not been reported in Iran, so far. Here, the first case of liver hydatid cyst coinfected with HIV in Iran is reported. The patient is a 46-year-old female HIV-positive based on the laboratory report. Her clinical symptoms included abdominal pain, abdominal enlargement, and anorexia. Ultrasound showed three large hepatic hydatid cysts with hundreds of daughter cysts. Ultrasonography of the cyst revealed it as a CE2 stage according to the WHO classification. The patient went under complete anesthesia followed by complete cyst removal by surgery. Observation of the hydatid cyst fluid using eosin 0.1% revealed more than 70% viable protoscoleces. Histopathology examination, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and viable protoscoleces confirmed the diagnosis of echinococcosis. The IgG ELISA test with native AgB for E. granulosus infection was also positive. mtDNA amplification using PCR and sequencing showed the cyst as E. granulosus sensu stricto genotype. Our observations show that huge, large, and high-pressure cysts with hundreds of daughter cysts are difficult to be completely removed, and drug treatment has not been able to reduce their size. The hippocampus, a critical cerebral region involved in learning and memory formation, is especially vulnerable to ischemic defect. Here, we developed an injectable electroactive hydrogel based on pluronic-chitosan/aniline-pentamer with proper conductivity around 10 -4  S/cm to achieve the functional repair of the hippocampus following the ischemic defect. FTIR, DSC, and TGA measurements were performed to assess the chemical structure and thermal stability of the synthesized hydrogel. Aniline pentamer decreased the swelling capacity, degradation, and drug release rate. Further, contact angle, melting point, and gelation time of hydrogels were enhanced by addition of aniline oligomer. Moreover, it endowed the on-demand electro-responsive drug release. Injectability of hydrogel was evaluated by rheometry, exhibiting proper gelling time at the body temperature. The ionic/electrical conductivity and desired in vitro biocompatibility with PC12 cells were also achieved. Injection of VEGF-loaded electroactive hydrogel in the hippocampal ischemic animal model resulted in decreased infarction volume, improved hippocampal dependent learning, and memory performance. The rapid global spread as well as the mortality and morbidity associated with COVID-19 has raised increasing concern around the globe. Studies have reported that patients infected with the novel coronavirus are prone to coagulopathy. However, information on portal vein thrombosis in patients with COVID-19 is scarce. In this case report, we depict the abdominal CT findings of a 26-year-old male patient with COVID-19 who developed severe abdominal pain during hospitalization and was later diagnosed with portal vein thrombosis. We also demonstrate the chest CT findings of the same patient, which revealed bilateral pleural effusion, a less common imaging finding, and multifocal patchy consolidations. Extramedullary haematopoiesis (EMH) is defined as haematopoiesis occurring in organs outside the bone marrow. The liver is one of the rare sites of EMH, and to the best of our knowledge, a few cases of adult EMH of the liver have been reported in the last 20 years. Here, we reported the case of a 68-year-old man with a known history of myelofibrosis presented with vague abdominal pain. An abdominal CT scan showed a hypoattenuating periportal mass encasing the portal vein. The final diagnosis of EMH was made through the histopathological examination. This is a rare presentation of EMH, which may be easily mistaken for other pathologies such as metastases. Networks are invaluable tools to study real biological, social and technological complex systems in which connected elements form a purposeful phenomenon. A higher resolution image of these systems shows that the connection types do not confine to one but to a variety of types. Multiplex networks encode this complexity with a set of nodes which are connected in different layers via different types of links. A large body of research on link prediction problem is devoted to finding missing links in single-layer (simplex) networks. In recent years, the problem of link prediction in multiplex networks has gained the attention of researchers from different scientific communities. Although most of these studies suggest that prediction performance can be enhanced by using the information contained in different layers of the network, the exact source of this enhancement remains obscure. Here, it is shown that similarity w.r.t. structural features (eigenvectors) is a major source of enhancements for link prediction task in multiplex networks using the proposed layer reconstruction method and experiments on real-world multiplex networks from different disciplines. Designing novel biomaterials for tissue engineering purpose is an obvious necessary considering ever increasing need for appropriate biocompatibility and properties to achieve the maximum regeneration. In this research, a new type of biomaterial based on poly (phenylene sulfide) (PPS) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was synthesized and applied within chitosan based hydrogel to evaluate its performance as a wound dressing potentially. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction spectrometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and compression tests were performed to assess suitability of composite biomaterial. Thermal behavior of the PPS/rGO composite was evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The PPS/rGO composition of 90: 10 (w/w) was selected because of having the highest biocompatibility and utilized in chitosan hydrogel. Chitosan hydrogel swelling ratio was declined from 800 to 200% by PPS/rGO addition; likewise, water vapor transition rate (WVTR) was dropped. A proper biocompatibility and cell attachment was confirmed, where porosity of ca. 80% appeared promising for tissue engineering uses. Introduction: Owing to nonspecific clinical symptoms, Wilson disease (WD) diagnosis is often missed or delayed; hence, many patients reach end-stage liver disease. When cirrhosis takes place, it is difficult to distinguish between WD and other causes of cirrhosis by imaging alone. This study outlines abdominal computed tomography (CT) imaging findings that occur more frequently in patients with WD cirrhosis., Material and Methods: Fifty-seven patients with WD who had referred for liver transplantation took part in this study and underwent dynamic liver CT examination before transplantation. Qualitative and quantitative parameters including liver density, contour irregularity, dysmorphia, hypertrophy of caudate lobe, presence of focal parenchymal lesion, thickness of perihepatic fat layer, periportal thickness, lymphadenopathy, and other associated findings were recorded and evaluated., Results: Among these patients, 85.9% had contour irregularity, 28% had hepatic dysmorphia, and periportal thickening and cholelithiasis were found in 25.5% and 12.3% of patients, respectively. Splenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, and portosystemic shunting were observed in all patients. Also, hyperdense nodules (>20 mm) and honeycomb pattern were detected in 65.2% and 15.2% of patients, respectively, in the arterial phase. In the portal phase, these findings were detected only in 13% and 4.3% of patients. Hypertrophy of caudate lobe was seen only in 12.2% of patients., Conclusion: WD-associated cirrhosis has many CT imaging findings, although most of them are nonspecific. Biomedical engineering seeks to enhance the quality of life by developing advanced materials and technologies. Chitosan-based biomaterials have attracted significant attention because of having unique chemical structures with desired biocompatibility and biodegradability, which play different roles in membranes, sponges and scaffolds, along with promising biological properties such as biocompatibility, biodegradability and non-toxicity. Therefore, chitosan derivatives have been widely used in a vast variety of uses, chiefly pharmaceuticals and biomedical engineering. It is attempted here to draw a comprehensive overview of chitosan emerging applications in medicine, tissue engineering, drug delivery, gene therapy, cancer therapy, ophthalmology, dentistry, bio-imaging, bio-sensing and diagnosis. The use of Stem Cells (SCs) has given an interesting feature to the use of chitosan so that regenerative medicine and therapeutic methods have benefited from chitosan-based platforms. The impact of sample orientation on the poling of single-sided multilayer silica structures is studied. The results show that the presence of a multilayer stack near the cathode creates a nonlinear region where it otherwise would not have formed. It is shown that field orientation impacts the location and magnitude of the induced nonlinearity. A nonlinearity is always present in the stack independent of whether the stack is on the anode or cathode side of the sample unlike the nonlinearity in bulk silica, which is always located on the anode side.

Breast cancer is a complex disease which is found as the second cause of cancer-associated death among women. Accumulating of evidence indicated that various factors (i.e., gentical and envirmental factors) could be associated with initiation and progression of breast cancer. Diagnosis of breast cancer patients in early stages is one of important aspects of breast cancer treatment. Among of various diagnosis platforms, imaging techniques are main diagnosis approaches which could provide valuable data on patients with breast cancer. It has been showed that various imaging techniques such as mammography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron-emission tomography (PET), Computed tomography (CT), and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) could be used for diagnosis and monitoring patients with breast cancer in various stages. Beside, imaging techniques, utilization of biochemical biomarkers such as proteins, DNAs, mRNAs, and microRNAs could be employed as new diagnosis and therapeutic tools for patients with breast cancer. Here, we summarized various imaging techniques and biochemical biomarkers could be utilized as diagnosis of patients with breast cancer. Sebaceous lymphadenomas are rare and account for less than 1% of primary salivary gland tumors. These rare tumors are mostly found in men older than 50 years. The clinicopathological features of these tumors are poorly understood and no definite causative factor has been reported for them till now. They are not often diagnosed prior to surgery, which could be due to their rarity and lack of enough preop radiological and cytological findings. Few case reports have been published in literature about their pathogenesis and accompanying malignant lesions. The cytological and imaging findings have been dealt with in some articles. Here we describe the histologic, cytologic, and radiologic findings of sebaceous lymphadenomas of parotid gland, all together, and discuss their differential diagnoses in various diagnostic methods.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the diagnostic accuracy of a modified Bragard test compared with the straight leg raise (SLR) test in patients presenting with electrodiagnostic evidence of L5 and S1 nerve root compression., Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted on 506 consecutive patients with signs and symptoms consistent with lumbosacral radiculopathy confirmed by electrodiagnostic study. Patients were evaluated from September 2013 to September 2015 in the physical medicine and rehabilitation outpatient clinic of Shahid Faghihi Teaching Hospital, Shiraz, Iran. The SLR test was investigated concomitantly to determine the sensitivity and specificity., Results: Electrodiagnostic study findings indicated lumbosacral radiculopathy in 312 patients. Of these participants, 198 were positive on SLR testing, and of 114 SLR-negative patients, 79 were positive on Modified Bragard testing. Sensitivity of the Modified Bragard test was 69.3%, and specificity was 67.42%. Positive and negative predictive values were 73.15% and 63.16%, respectively. Positive likelihood ratio was 2.13, and negative likelihood ratio was 0.46. Diagnostic odds ratio was 4.63. In patients with symptom duration of less than 3 weeks, SLR sensitivity and specificity decreased as the Modified Bragard test diagnostic accuracy increased., Conclusions: The Modified Bragard test is easy to perform and has an acceptable test performance, which can help to increase the discriminative power of clinical examination in patients with L5 or S1 nerve root compression who exhibit a negative SLR test result, especially in the acute phase of disease.

A novel binary homogeneous catalyst system based on (I): rac -Me₂Si(2-Me-4-PhIn)₂ZrCl₂ and (II): (2-PhIn)₂ZrCl₂ catalysts at various molar ratios was utilized for the synthesis of polypropylene (PP) reactor blends with bimodal molecular weight distribution (MWD). The results of gel permeation chromatography analyses revealed that the catalyst (I) was responsible for the production of i -PP with high molecular weight (MW) while the individual use of catalyst (II) led to the production of an elastomeric PP with relatively low MW. However, application of the binary catalyst system led to high MW bimodal MWD products being highly dependent on the catalysts' molar ratios. Increasing the molar ratio of catalyst (II) to catalyst (I) resulted in a notable enhancement of the products' complex viscosity due to the increased MW, a higher level of chains' entanglements and formation of amorphous blocks along the polymer chains. All products exhibited a single relaxation that shifted towards longer times upon changing the catalysts' molar ratios. Scanning electron microscopy results revealed that the fracture surface of the blends, synthesized by the binary catalyst system, became more heterogeneous in comparison with the products obtained by the individual use of the catalyst (I). The observed heterogeneity was found to increase by increasing the amount of catalyst (II). Such morphological change was further corroborated by the dynamic rheological data, indicating a promising correlation between the linear rheological results and the morphological features of the synthesized PP reactor blends.

Fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces from hydrophilic polymers has always been regarded as a challenge. In this study, to achieve superhydrophobic polyurethane (PU) surfaces, silica nanoparticles and ethanol as non-solvent were simultaneously utilized during a solution casting-based process. Such modified version of phase separation process was found to be highly efficient, and also it required much lower concentration of nanoparticles to achieve superhydrophobicity as compared to the previously reported methods in the literature. According to the proposed mechanism, non-solvent induces a more profound aggregation of silica nanoparticles at the surface's top layer causing the surface energy to be highly diminished, and thus, the water repellency is improved. Morphology and topography results showed that a unique "triple-sized" structure was formed on the surface of superhydrophobic samples. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results proved that both PU macromolecules and silica nanoparticles were concurrently present at the surface layer of the superhydrophobic sample. It was concluded that surface composition and roughness could be regarded as competing factors in achieving superhydrophobicity. Based on the obtained results, the proposed method exhibits a promising potential in large-scale fabrication of surface layers with superhydrophobic property. The Fourier-Bessel space conversion of Maxwell's wave equations into an eigenvalue formulation is a useful numerical tool for computing the steady states of cylindrically symmetric dielectric structures. The relative dielectric profile, inverse (1/ε r ) present in wave equations, is split into a constant offset and corresponding spatially dependent residue and greatly reduces the matrix building time (and thus computation time) when alternate dielectric configurations are considered with identical spatial distributions. Such a process significantly speeds up the theoretical analysis of numerous optical designs, such as index of refraction sensors, hole infiltration sensors and resonator tuning. The theoretical steps involved are presented along with examples of the technique applied to the well-known Bragg resonator and central defect containing hexagonal array.

The main aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of different topographical features on the biological performance of polypropylene (PP)/silica coatings. To this end, a novel method including combined use of nanoparticles and non-solvent was used for preparation of superhydrophobic PP coatings. The proposed method led to a much more homogeneous appearance with a better adhesion to the glass substrate. Moreover, a notable reduction was observed in the required contents of nanoparticles (100-20 wt% with respect to the polymer) and non-solvent (35.5-9 vol%) for achieving superhydrophobicity. Surface composition and morphology of the coatings were also investigated via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Based on both qualitative and quantitative evaluations, it was found that the superhydrophobic coatings with only nano-scale roughness strongly prevented adhesion and proliferation of 4T1 mouse mammary tumor cells as compared to the superhydrophobic surfaces with micro-scale structure. Such results demonstrate that the cell behavior could be controlled onto the polymer and nanocomposite-based surfaces via tuning the surface micro/nano structure., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a neoplasm usually arising in a cirrhotic liver by a multistep carcinogenesis process. Early detection of HCC and accurate assessment of tumor burden are crucial to successful treatment planning and long-term survival., Objectives: In this study, we compared the accuracy of diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) combined with limited sequence magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) set as a potentially quick and practical MR candidate with ultrasonography (US) for screening of HCC in patients with cirrhosis., Patients and Methods: Of 96 patients with cirrhosis, 30 who had concomitant HCC proved by pathology were selected. MRI, DWI, and US of the liver were performed for the patients. Sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of DWI alone, limited sequences MRI alone, a combination of them, and US were calculated for the detection of HCC in these patients and then comparison between these modalities was performed., Results: Combination of limited sequences MRI and DWI had the highest accuracy (94.79%) followed by DWI alone followed by limited sequence MRI alone. The least accuracy was for US (78.12%) with a statistically significant difference., Conclusion: Due to the significant improvement in the treatment of early stage of HCC compared to the previous decade, we suggest a fast, non-invasive, more accurate, but more expensive method (HASTE, OP/IP T1W sequences MRI combined with DWI) rather than US for the screening of HCC in liver cirrhosis.

Transthoracic ultrasound (US) is useful in the evaluation of a wide range of peripheral parenchymal, pleural, and chest wall diseases. Furthermore, it is increasingly used to guide interventional procedures of the chest and pleural space. The role of chest US in the diagnosis of pneumothorax has been established, but comparison with lung computed tomography (CT) scanning has not yet been completely performed. The purpose of this study is to prospectively compare the accuracy of US with that of chest radiography in the detection of pneumothorax, with CT as the reference standard. One hundred ninety-seven patients who were evaluated by spiral chest CT scan for various clinical indications were prospectively evaluated. Ultrasonography was performed by a radiologist, blinded to the chest CT findings. Sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of ultrasound in the detection of pneumothorax were then compared with chest CT scan. CT scan showed pneumothorax in 92 patients. Sonography and plain X-ray of the chest revealed 74 and 56 cases of pneumothorax, respectively. Statistical analysis disclosed the US to be 80.4 % sensitive and 89 % specific in the detection of pneumothorax with an overall accuracy of 85 %. In this study, US was more sensitive than chest radiography in the detection of pneumothorax. The results of this study suggest that thoracic US, when performed by trained individuals, can be helpful for the detection of pneumothorax.
