Oxygen is a critical gas in numerous industries and is produced globally on a gigatonne scale, primarily through energy-intensive cryogenic distillation of air. The realization of large-scale adsorption-based air separations could enable a significant reduction in associated worldwide energy consumption and would constitute an important component of broader efforts to combat climate change. Certain small-scale air separations are carried out using N2-selective adsorbents, although the low capacities, poor selectivities, and high regeneration energies associated with these materials limit the extent of their usage. In contrast, the realization of O2-selective adsorbents may facilitate more widespread adoption of adsorptive air separations, which could enable the decentralization of O2 production and utilization and advance new uses for O2. Here, we present a detailed evaluation of the potential of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to serve as O2-selective adsorbents for air separations. Drawing insights from biological and molecular systems that selectively bind O2, we survey the field of O2-selective MOFs, highlighting progress and identifying promising areas for future exploration. As a guide for further research, the importance of moving beyond the traditional evaluation of O2 adsorption enthalpy, ΔH, is emphasized, and the free energy of O2 adsorption, ΔG, is discussed as the key metric for understanding and predicting MOF performance under practical conditions. Based on a proof-of-concept assessment of O2 binding carried out for eight different MOFs using experimentally derived capacities and thermodynamic parameters, we identify two existing materials and one proposed framework with nearly optimal ΔG values for operation under user-defined conditions. While enhancements are still needed in other material properties, the insights from the assessments herein serve as a guide for future materials design and evaluation. Computational approaches based on density functional theory with periodic boundary conditions are also discussed as complementary to experimental efforts, and new predictions enable identification of additional promising MOF systems for investigation.

Developing O2-selective adsorbents that can produce high-purity oxygen from air remains a significant challenge. Here, we show that chemically reduced metal-organic framework materials of the type AxFe2(bdp)3 (A = Na+, K+; bdp2- = 1,4-benzenedipyrazolate; 0 < x ≤ 2), which feature coordinatively saturated iron centers, are capable of strong and selective adsorption of O2 over N2 at ambient (25 °C) or even elevated (200 °C) temperature. A combination of gas adsorption analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and a range of spectroscopic methods, including 23Na solid-state NMR, Mössbauer, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, are employed as probes of O2 uptake. Significantly, the results support a selective adsorption mechanism involving outer-sphere electron transfer from the framework to form superoxide species, which are subsequently stabilized by intercalated alkali metal cations that reside in the one-dimensional triangular pores of the structure. We further demonstrate O2 uptake behavior similar to that of AxFe2(bdp)3 in an expanded-pore framework analogue and thereby gain additional insight into the O2 adsorption mechanism. The chemical reduction of a robust metal-organic framework to render it capable of binding O2 through such an outer-sphere electron transfer mechanism represents a promising and underexplored strategy for the design of next-generation O2 adsorbents.

Background: Asthma is the leading source of unscheduled hospitalisation in Australian children, with a high burden placed upon children, their parents/families, and the healthcare system. In Australia, there are widening disparities in paediatric asthma care including inequitable access to comprehensive ongoing and planned asthma care for children. Methods: The Asthma Care from Home Project is a comprehensive virtually enabled asthma model of care that aims to a. supports families, communities and healthcare providers, b. flexible and locally acceptable, and c. allow for adoption of innovations such as digital technologies so that asthma care can be provided "from home", reduce potentially preventable asthma hospitalisation, and ensure satisfaction at a patient, family, and healthcare provider level. The model of care includes standardisation of discharge care through provision of an asthma discharge resource pack containing individual asthma action plan, follow-up letters for the child's general practitioner (GP) and school/child care, and access to online asthma educational sessions and resource; post-discharge care coordination through text message reminders for families for regular GP review, email correspondence with their child's GP and school/childcare; and virtual home visits to discuss home environmental triggers, provide personalised asthma education and respond to parental concerns relating to their child's asthma. This study is comprised of three components: 1) a quasi-experimental pre/post impact evaluation assessing the impact of the model on healthcare utilisation and asthma control measures; 2) a mixed-methods implementation evaluation to understand how and why our intervention was effective or ineffective in producing systems change; 3) an economic evaluation to assess the cost-effectiveness of the proposed model of care from a family and health services perspective. Discussion: This study aims to improve access to asthma care for children in rural and remote areas. Implementation evaluation and economic evaluation will provide insights into the sustainability and scalability of the asthma model of care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Students with chronic illness generally have higher school needs than their healthy peers. The research to date examining school support for these needs has been limited to qualitative methods. We collected quantitative data to compare the school needs and supports received by 192 students with chronic illness and 208 students without chronic illness using parent-completed surveys. We assessed school experiences and receipt of school support across academic, social-emotional, and medical domains and school attendance. We analyzed the data using logistic regression. Students with chronic illness were 3.8 times more likely to have repeated a grade, 3.6 times more likely to have parent-reported academic challenges, and 4.9 times more likely to have recent illness-related school absenteeism than healthy students. Parents of students with chronic illness were 2.2 times more likely to report their child to have moderate-high emotional distress, and 4.6 times more likely to report that their child had low social confidence compared with parents of healthy students. Students with chronic illness did not receive more school-based tutoring, home-based tutoring, or support from a teacher's aide or school psychologist than healthy students. Students with chronic illness receive insufficient support to address their academic and social-emotional needs or high rates of school absenteeism. Evidence-based educational services must be developed and delivered to meet the needs of students with chronic illness at school and while recovering at home.

Students with chronic illness may disengage from school, adversely affecting their school outcomes. Positive education targets students' social-emotional well-being (school well-being), which can increase engagement with school. We compared the relationship among positive educational practices, school well-being, and engagement with school as reported by parents of students with and without chronic illness. We used a convergent mixed-methods cross-sectional design. We collected data from 215 parents of school-age children with chronic illness and 212 parents of children without chronic illness. Data assessed positive educational practices, school well-being, and engagement with school, which we analyzed using regression and structural equation models. Forty-nine parents of students with chronic illness completed a telephone interview about their child's school experiences, which we analyzed using content analysis. School well-being was significantly lower among students with chronic illness, compared with students without chronic illness (p = 0.05). Higher student well-being (p = 0.001) and higher levels of positive educational practices (p = 0.002) were associated with higher engagement with school. School well-being mediated the relationship between positive educational practices and engagement with school for students with chronic illness but not students without chronic illness. Parents of children with chronic illness described how positive educational practices and their child's school well-being promoted their child's engagement with school. Parents also reported the negative consequences of low school well-being. Positive educational practices alone may not be sufficient to increase engagement with school in students with low school well-being. Combined preventative and early intervention psychosocial support may best promote engagement with school in students with chronic illness.

This scoping review investigated the existing literature and identified the evidence gaps related to diagnosis and management in children aged 2–18 years presenting to hospitals with a co-diagnosis of asthma and community-acquired pneumonia. We designed a scoping review following Arksey and O'Malley's scoping review framework and PRISMA extension for a scoping review. We searched literature using five electronic databases: PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase from 2003 to June 2023. A total of 1599 abstracts with titles were screened and 12 abstracts were selected for full review. Separate guidelines including Modified Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines; modified Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) guidelines; and a consensus guideline developed by the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (PIDS) and Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) were used for diagnosing asthma and CAP individually. Chest X-rays were used in 83.3% (10/12) of studies to establish the co-diagnosis of asthma-CAP in children. Variations were observed in using different laboratory investigations across the studies. Infectious etiologies were detected in five (41.7%) studies. In 75% (9/12) of studies, children with asthma-CAP co-diagnosis were treated with antimicrobials, however, bacterial etiology was not reported in 44.4% (4/9) of the studies. Our scoping review suggests that chest X-rays are commonly used to establish the co-diagnosis of asthma-CAP and antibiotics are often used without laboratory confirmation of a bacterial etiology. Clinical practice guidelines for the management of asthma and pneumonia in children who present with co-diagnosis may standardize clinical care and reduce variation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
