Mathematics - Rings and Algebras ,15A23, 15B33, 16E30 - Abstract
Following O'Meara's result [Journal of Algebra and Its Applications Vol~\textbf{13}, No. 8 (2014)], it follows that the block matrix $A=\begin{pmatrix} B & 0 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix} \in M_{n+r}(R)$, $B\in M_n(R)$, $r\ge 1$, over a von Neumann regular separative ring $R$, is a product of idempotent matrices. Furthermore, this decomposition into idempotents of $A$ also holds when $B$ is an invertible matrix and $R$ is a GE ring (defined by Cohn [New mathematical monographs: {\bf 3}, Cambridge University Press (2006)]). As a consequence, it follows that if there exists an example of a von Neumann regular ring $R$ over which the matrix $ A=\begin{pmatrix} B & 0 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix} \in M_{n+r}(R) $ where $B\in M_n(R)$, $r\ge 1$ , cannot be expressed as a product of idempotents, then $R$ is not separative, thus providing an answer to an open question whether there exists a von Neumann regular ring which is not separative. The paper concludes with an example of an open question whether every totally nonnegative matrix is a product of nonnegative idempotent matrices., Comment: 8 pages

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are prime candidate sources of the high-energy, astrophysical neutrinos detected by IceCube. This is demonstrated by the real-time multi-messenger detection of the blazar TXS 0506+056 and the recent evidence of neutrino emission from NGC 1068 from a separate time-averaged study. However, the production mechanism of the astrophysical neutrinos in AGN is not well established which can be resolved via correlation studies with photon observations. For neutrinos produced due to photohadronic interactions in AGN, in addition to a correlation of neutrinos with high-energy photons, there would also be a correlation of neutrinos with photons emitted at radio wavelengths. In this work, we perform an in-depth stacking study of the correlation between 15 GHz radio observations of AGN reported in the MOJAVE XV catalog, and ten years of neutrino data from IceCube. We also use a time-dependent approach which improves the statistical power of the stacking analysis. No significant correlation was found for both analyses and upper limits are reported. When compared to the IceCube diffuse flux, at 100 TeV and for a spectral index of 2.5, the upper limits derived are $\sim3\%$ and $\sim9\%$ for the time-averaged and time-dependent case, respectively., Comment: 14 Pages 7 Figures

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We present a search for an eV-scale sterile neutrino using 7.5 years of data from the IceCube DeepCore detector. The analysis uses a sample of 21,914 events with energies between 5 and 150 GeV to search for sterile neutrinos through atmospheric muon neutrino disappearance. Improvements in event selection and treatment of systematic uncertainties provide greater statistical power compared to previous DeepCore sterile neutrino searches. Our results are compatible with the absence of mixing between active and sterile neutrino states, and we place constraints on the mixing matrix elements $|U_{\mu 4}|^2 < 0.0534$ and $|U_{\tau 4}|^2 < 0.0574$ at 90% CL under the assumption that $\Delta m^2_{41}\geq 1\;\mathrm{eV^2}$. These null results add to the growing tension between anomalous appearance results and constraints from disappearance searches in the 3+1 sterile neutrino landscape., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. A novel method to reconstruct the energy of hadronic showers in the CMS High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) is presented. The HGCAL is a sampling calorimeter with very fine transverse and longitudinal granularity. The active media are silicon sensors and scintillator tiles readout by SiPMs and the absorbers are a combination of lead and Cu/CuW in the electromagnetic section, and steel in the hadronic section. The shower reconstruction method is based on graph neural networks and it makes use of a dynamic reduction network architecture. It is shown that the algorithm is able to capture and mitigate the main effects that normally hinder the reconstruction of hadronic showers using classical reconstruction methods, by compensating for fluctuations in the multiplicity, energy, and spatial distributions of the shower's constituents. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using test beam data collected in 2018 prototype of the CMS HGCAL accompanied by a section of the CALICE AHCAL prototype. The capability of the method to mitigate the impact of energy leakage from the calorimeter is also demonstrated., Comment: Prepared for submission to JINST

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are promising candidate sources of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos since they provide environments rich in matter and photon targets where cosmic ray interactions may lead to the production of gamma rays and neutrinos. We searched for high-energy neutrino emission from AGN using the $\textit{Swift}$-BAT Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) catalog of hard X-ray sources and 12 years of IceCube muon track data. First, upon performing a stacked search, no significant emission was found. Second, we searched for neutrinos from a list of 43 candidate sources and found an excess from the direction of two sources, Seyfert galaxies NGC 1068 and NGC 4151. We observed NGC 1068 at flux $\phi_{\nu_{\mu}+\bar{\nu}_{\mu}}$ = $4.02_{-1.52}^{+1.58} \times 10^{-11}$ TeV$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ normalized at 1 TeV, with power-law spectral index, $\gamma$ = 3.10$^{+0.26}_{-0.22}$, consistent with previous IceCube results. The observation of a neutrino excess from the direction of NGC 4151 is at a post-trial significance of 2.9$\sigma$. If interpreted as an astrophysical signal, the excess observed from NGC 4151 corresponds to a flux $\phi_{\nu_{\mu}+\bar{\nu}_{\mu}}$ = $1.51_{-0.81}^{+0.99} \times 10^{-11}$ TeV$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ normalized at 1 TeV and $\gamma$ = 2.83$^{+0.35}_{-0.28}$.

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We present the first three-parameter fit to a 3+1 sterile neutrino model using 7.634 years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory on $\nu_\mu+\overline{\nu}_\mu$ charged-current interactions in the energy range 500--9976 GeV. Our analysis is sensitive to the mass-squared splitting between the heaviest and lightest mass state ($\Delta m_{41}^2$), the mixing matrix element connecting muon flavor to the fourth mass state ($|U_{\mu4}|^2$), and the element connecting tau flavor to the fourth mass state ($|U_{\tau4}|^2$). Predicted propagation effects in matter enhance the signature through a resonance as atmospheric neutrinos from the Northern Hemisphere traverse the Earth to the IceCube detector at the South Pole. The remaining sterile neutrino matrix elements are left fixed, with $|U_{e4}|^2= 0$ and $\delta_{14}=0$, as they have a negligible effect, and $\delta_{24}=\pi$ is set to give the most conservative limits. The result is consistent with the no-sterile neutrino hypothesis with a probability of 4.3%. Profiling the likelihood of each parameter yields the 90\% confidence levels: $ 2.4\,\mathrm{eV}^{2} < \Delta m_{41}^2 <9.6\,\mathrm{eV}^{2} $ , $0.0081 < |U_{\mu4}|^2 < 0.10$ , and $|U_{\tau4}|^2< 0.035$, which narrows the allowed parameter-space for $|U_{\tau4}|^2$. However, the primary result of this analysis is the first map of the 3+1 parameter space exploring the interdependence of $\Delta m_{41}^2$, $|U_{\mu4}|^2$, and $|U_{\tau4}|^2$., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. Genevois recently classified which graph braid groups on $\ge 3$ strands are word hyperbolic. In the $3$-strand case, he asked whether all such word hyperbolic groups are actually free; this reduced to checking two infinite classes of graphs: sun and pulsar graphs. We prove that $3$-strand braid groups of sun graphs are free. On the other hand, it was known to experts that $3$-strand braid groups of most pulsar graphs contain surface subgroups. We provide a simple proof of this and prove an additional structure theorem for these groups., Comment: Based on work from a Louisiana State University VIR (Vertically Integrated Research) course. In v2, we reworded the introduction to better reflect what was previously known in the pulsar case and corrected some typos

Background: Vaginal discharge (VD) is a common symptom in women during the reproductive period, especially during pregnancy. Pathological VD during pregnancy is an important public health concern because it has a sociopsychological impact on women and influences fetomaternal outcomes. Aims and Objectives: The study aims to estimate the prevalence of pathological discharge in pregnant women. The study also focuses on the demographic profile and various risk factors associated with pathological VDs and their consequences on fetal and maternal health. Materials and Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in a tertiary care center in Northern India. A total of 150 pregnant women with complaints of VD in the second and third trimesters with confirmation on speculum examination were recruited and evaluated for the etiology of discharge. Patients were followed until delivery and data regarding fetomaternal outcomes was collected. Results: The prevalence of pathological VD among enrolled women was 39.33% and various etiologies were candidiasis (15.33%), bacterial vaginosis (10.66%), aerobic vaginitis (8.67%), and trichomoniasis (4.67%). These infections were significantly related to pre-term delivery and pre-term pre-labor rupture of membranes. Furthermore, the incidence of prematurity, and low birth weight neonates requiring neonatal intensive care unit care was significantly high in babies born to mothers with pathological VD. Conclusion: Vaginal infections affect both maternal and neonatal health, thus, increasing the likelihood of poor perinatal outcomes. Hence, we propose that routine screening for pathological VD for all pregnant women should be introduced into standard antenatal care.

Nuclear Theory - Abstract
A comprehensive study of favoured and unfavoured $\alpha$-decay, cluster decay, weak-decay along with spontaneous fission in undetected superheavy nuclei within the range for proton number 111$\leq$Z$\leq$118 and neutron number 161$\leq$N$\leq$192 is performed. Half-lives for various mentioned decays are estimated with good accuracy on the basis of NUBASE2020 and are found in excellent match with the known half-lives. $\alpha$-decay mode is found most probable in this wide range and correspondingly potential $\alpha$-decay chains are reckoned. Peculiarly, the chances of cluster emission, as well as weak-decay, are also anticipated in this region of the periodic chart which open new pathways of detection of superheavy nuclei., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables, Accepted in Physica Scripta

Introduction: Despite recent advances, management of distal tibial fractures is challenging, with high rate of complications. Fibula pro tibia plating technique fixes fibula and tibia together, via laterally placed fibular plate without disturbing the tibial soft tissue sleeve. We contemplated this pilot study to assess effectiveness of fibula pro tibia plating in management of distal tibia fibula fractures. Materials and methods: A total of 30 patients with distal tibia fibula fractures with fracture line extending within 5cm from tibial plafond were managed with fibula pro tibia plating, with or without minimal articular fixation. Outcome evaluation was done by union, union time, alignment and functional outcome as assessed by AOFAS score. Results: Mean age in the series was 39.4 years with male to female ratio of 3:2. Mean duration of surgery, blood loss and C arm exposure were 79 minutes (range 52 to 98min), 80ml (range 62 to 102ml) and 48 shoots (range 36 to 81 shoots), respectively. All fractures united in mean union time of 10.2 weeks (range 9 to 14 weeks) with acceptable alignment in all the patients except one. Mean AOFAS score was 86.3 (range 70 to 93) with 29 patients having good to excellent outcome. One patient had varus malunion and in one case infection was seen. Conclusion: Fibula pro tibia plating can be successfully used to manage complex distal tibia fractures which leaves the soft tissue and periosteal sleeve undisturbed, thus avoiding wound related problems and leading to early union.

Nuclear Theory - Abstract
The possibility of cluster emission from trans-lead (86$\leq$Z$\leq$96) region of periodic chart has been explored comprehensively by employing few empirical formulas which are modified by adding angular momentum ($l$) or isospin-dependent ($I=(N-Z)/A$) or both terms for the calculation of cluster decay half-lives. These modified versions of the formulas are found with lesser ${\chi}^2$ per degree of freedom and root mean-square error, in addition to the smaller values of some other statistical parameters, while compared to their corresponding old versions on available 61 experimental data of cluster radioactivity. By applying the modified version of the formula given by Balasubramaniam \textit{et al.} [PRC 70 (2004) 017301], the most accurate formula among these, half-lives of several clusters i.e. isotopes of Be, B, C, N, O, F, Ne, Na, Mg, and Si are predicted systematically for the several isotopes in the trans-lead region. The contest of cluster emission with $\alpha$-decay has been investigated in form of branching ratio which brings several potential cluster emissions into the probable decay modes of these nuclei. The accurate prediction of half-lives of such clusters is expected to be crucial for the future experimental observations where $\alpha$-decay is observed dominantly., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, Accepted in Nuclear Physics A

We present a new approach to jet definition alternative to clustering methods, such as the anti-$k_T$ scheme, that exploit kinematic data directly. Instead the new method uses kinematic information to represent the particles in a multidimensional space, as in spectral clustering. After confirming its Infra-Red (IR) safety, we compare its performance in analysing $gg \rightarrow H_{125~\rm GeV} \rightarrow H_{40~\rm GeV}H_{40~\rm GeV} \rightarrow b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$, $gg \rightarrow H_{500~\rm GeV} \rightarrow H_{125~\rm GeV}H_{125~\rm GeV} \rightarrow b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$ and $gg, q\bar{q} \rightarrow t\bar{t} \rightarrow b\bar{b}W^+W^- \rightarrow b\bar{b}jjl\nu l$ events from Monte Carlo (MC) samples, specifically, in reconstructing the relevant final states, to that of the anti-$k_T$ algorithm. Finally, we show that the results for spectral clustering are obtained without any change in the parameter settings of the algorithm, unlike the anti-$k_T$ case, which requires the cone size to be adjusted to the physics process under study.

Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
The upgrade of the CMS experiment for the high luminosity operation of the LHC comprises the replacement of the current endcap calorimeter by a high granularity sampling calorimeter (HGCAL). The electromagnetic section of the HGCAL is based on silicon sensors interspersed between lead and copper (or copper tungsten) absorbers. The hadronic section uses layers of stainless steel as an absorbing medium and silicon sensors as an active medium in the regions of high radiation exposure, and scintillator tiles directly readout by silicon photomultipliers in the remaining regions. As part of the development of the detector and its readout electronic components, a section of a silicon-based HGCAL prototype detector along with a section of the CALICE AHCAL prototype was exposed to muons, electrons and charged pions in beam test experiments at the H2 beamline at the CERN SPS in October 2018. The AHCAL uses the same technology as foreseen for the HGCAL but with much finer longitudinal segmentation. The performance of the calorimeters in terms of energy response and resolution, longitudinal and transverse shower profiles is studied using negatively charged pions, and is compared to GEANT4 predictions. This is the first report summarizing results of hadronic showers measured by the HGCAL prototype using beam test data., Comment: Accepted for publication by JINST

ATHENA has been designed as a general purpose detector capable of delivering the full scientific scope of the Electron-Ion Collider. Careful technology choices provide fine tracking and momentum resolution, high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry, hadron identification over a wide kinematic range, and near-complete hermeticity. This article describes the detector design and its expected performance in the most relevant physics channels. It includes an evaluation of detector technology choices, the technical challenges to realizing the detector and the R&D required to meet those challenges.
