Background and Aim: Head-and-neck cancers (HNCs) are significant causes of morbidity and mortality in both the developed and developing worlds. One of the most common types of HNC is oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The rationale behind the present study is to analyze the effectiveness of nuclear proliferative markers in comparison to the various grades of OSCC. This study utilizes Anneroth's histopathological multifactorial grading system for squamous cell carcinoma and further tends to compare this histological grading with nuclear proliferative indices of p53 and argyrophilic nucleolar organizer region (AgNOR). The aim of this study was to establish and develop a correlation between the proliferative markers, AgNOR and p53, and the histologic grade of the tumor (Anneroth's grading). Materials and Methods: A total of 60 cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma were taken from October 2020 to September 2022. The histological grading was done according to Anneroth's grading, and a score was given. P53 expression was graded according to the percentage of cells showing p53-positive immunostaining, and scoring was done from 0 to 3. The AgNOR score was calculated by examining 100 nuclei and calculating the mean AgNOR score per nucleus. Results: A significant linear correlation was obtained between the histological grading of OSCC and the proliferative markers (p53 and AgNOR). Conclusion: The analysis of the NOR count provides invaluable assistance in determining tumor aggressiveness and cellular proliferation rates. They can prove to be efficient tools to procure information on the malignant potential of different premalignant lesions. Elevated p53 expression implies greater clinical severity, a higher histological grade, and a poor prognosis for oral squamous cell carcinoma. The burden of cardiovascular disease has steadily increased in India. The aim of this study was to examine the veins when they are harvested in patients undergoing CABG (coronary artery bypass grafting), prior to grafting, to look for early evidences of damage due to inflammatory processes & also for immunohistochemical evidence of inflammatory markers and to compare the findings in diabetic patients and non-diabetic patients. Materials And Methods: This study was as part of an Extramural Ad-Hoc ICMR funded project. After obtaining an informed consent, a total of 154 patients were enrolled. All patients underwent CABG & saphenous vein (SV) was harvested, sent to the lab for evaluation. The characteristic histopathological features were observed, the findings compared in both groups. Immunohistochemical evidence of inflammatory markers in the SV wall was looked for and staining for MMP-9, COX-2 and iNOS was evaluated. Florescent staining of the SV for alterations in the basement membrane was also done. Results: A predominant male population was observed with 61.68% diabetics, hypertension and hypercholestraemia were the major risk factors along with smoking. Subendothelial edema was the major histopathological finding seen. IHC staining for inflammatory markers MMP-9 and COX-2 was done and showed positive findings for both the inflammatory markers, Examination florescent staining was carried out to delineate the basement membrane. Fragmentation of the basement membrane with disruption and a fibrillary appearance was seen in patients with smoking and hypertension. A fragmented & homogenous / afibrillar basement membrane was seen in the saphenous vein of patients with diabetes. Conclusion: We inferred that quicker attrition of the vein grafts may be anticipated in individuals with significant histological findings. Endometriosis is a prevalent benign condition arising from the female reproductive system and affects about 7%–10% of females. The association of endometriosis with serous borderline ovarian tumors has been a matter of interest in gynecology. Sampson first described the association between endometriosis and carcinoma. The endometriosis-associated ovarian malignancies are clear cell adenocarcinoma and endometrioid adenocarcinoma, whereas serous and mucinous are rare malignancies associated with endometriosis. Here, we present the case report of a 45-year-old female in which endometriosis was associated with borderline serous tumor, since there is a lack of enough confident criteria for diagnosing endometriosis-associated ovarian tumors. Background: A laboratory requisition form (LRF) is the main communication link between the laboratories and the clinicians. In a cytopathology laboratory, incomplete forms with inadequate information significantly impact the quality of the results and waste precious time of the lab. Aims: The aim of this study was to audit the LRFs for adequacy of demographic and clinical data and to analyze the reasons for the same. Settings and Design: A retrospective study was conducted in the cytopathology laboratory of a tertiary care center. Materials and Methods: All the original LRFs received for Pap smears and FNACs of 1-month duration were retrieved. The forms were scrutinized for the presence of specific parameters which were classified as patient information, clinician information and clinical information. In addition to the completeness of the form, clarity of the data was also noted. Statistical Analysis: The data were entered on excel worksheets and percentage of Pap smear and FNAC forms lacking information of various parameters was calculated. Results: A total of 431 LRFs were received in the month of January 2020. These included 274 Pap smear LRFs and 157 FNAC LRFs. Patient information was mentioned in predominantly all the forms, however, clinician and clinical information, which is indispensible for reporting, was missing in a significant proportion of the Pap smear and fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) forms. Conclusions: Receiving inadequately filled LRFs has been an age-old problem in all medical laboratories. Audit of inadequacy of LRFs helped in assessing the prevailing practices in the hospital and gave an insight into the quality of information available to the cytologists for reporting. Many clinicians withhold information out of ignorance about its importance or due to lack of time to fill up the details on the LRF. Also, filling out a LRF is a task usually delegated to the junior doctor in the OPD and the significance of filling the LRF correctly and comprehensively is often not emphasized upon adequately by the senior clinicians. This audit helped us taking preventive action by giving feedback to the clinicians and emphasizing to them the importance of clinical data on the LRF and in improvising the LRF using a more objective and user-friendly format. BACKGROUND : The histological response to chemotherapy is regarded as an independent prognostic variable in bone tumours. The surgical pathologist, thus has an important role in the management of primary malignant bone tumors like osteosarcomas and Ewing′s sarcoma subsequent to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: We report a short series of fifteen cases of osteosarcoma and three cases of Ewing′s sarcoma in which the histological response of the tumor after giving neoadjuvant chemotherapy to the patient of bone tumours was assessed and graded. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Bone tumours was assessed and graded by Huvos grading. The correlation of this histopathologic tumor response with clinical outcome is a well-established routine investigation in patients with bone sarcomas and the grading of the tumor response is based on definable histopathologic criteria. RESULT: Fifteen out of eighteen cases in this study showed a response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy, which was categorized as Huvos Grade 1 (%50%) and Huvos Grade 2 (50% to 90%). One case of osteosarcoma showed a Grade 4 response with a total absence of tumor cells in all the sections. One case of osteosarcoma and Ewing′s sarcoma each were categorized as Grade 3, showing tumor foci. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that necrosis of tumor area when greater than 90%, is regarded as a powerful positive prognostic indicator for survival in patients of high grade bone sarcomas. Background and Objectives: Oral verrucous hyperplasia and verrucous carcinoma are two clinicopathologically distinctive oral verrucous lesions, current understanding of these lesions is perplexing hence it is important to investigate the clinicopathological features of the two verrucous lesions and estimate their relationship. The present study was undertaken with the aim of identifying the pathological features in an attempt to differentiate both lesions. Materials and Methods: Archives of the department were retrieved for verrucous lesions. 20 cases were included in the study. Each patient was reviewed for clinical details like age, sex, habits, clinical features like site of lesion, clinical diagnosis, presence of associated lesions. Pathological details including both gross and microscopic features were analyzed. Results: A total of 20 patients included in the study showed a male preponderance with a significant association with tobacco consumption and size of lesion. Majority of the lesions were localized to the buccal mucosa, histopathological features were characteristic of each lesion. Expression of Ki-67, a proliferative marker showed, a statistically significant association between the mean LI of both the lesions. Conclusions: VH and VC are closely related lesions difficult to clinically differentiate, hence histopathological evaluation plays a pivotal role in establishing a diagnosis. Differentiating the two is essential and it should be kept in mind that VH may transform into VC hence, acting as a potential precancerous lesion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pitavastatin inhibits 3 hydroxy 3 methyl glutaryl coenzyme A (HMGCoA) reductase enzyme, preventing cholesterol synthesis along with elevating high density apolipoprotein A1 (Apo-A1). The present study was designed to evaluate cardioprotective potential of pitavastatin at 1 mg/kg/day and 3 mg/kg/day dose for 14 days in low dose isoproterenol (ISO) (5 mg/kg/day for 7 consecutive days) induced myocardial damage. ISO administration induced significant reduction in endogenous antioxidant enzymes like reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and raised thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) indicating activated lipid peroxidation. Along with this, a significant increase in level of cardiac injury biomarkers vie, creatine kinase (CK-MB), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), aspartate amino transferase (AST), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) and transforming growth factor (TGF-β) as well as brain natriuretic peptide (BNP). Histological examination also revealed marked myocardial tissue damage in ISO treated rats. However, pretreatment with pitavastatin (3 mg/kg/day) significantly maintained nearly normal levels of cardiac biomarkers and oxidant antioxidant status as well as lipid peroxidation in ISO induced MI rats. Cardiac histological assessment and infarct size assessment also showed marked reduction in myocardial architecture alteration including infarct size as well as collagen deposition by pitavastatin that strongly supported biochemical findings. These observations strongly corroborate that pitavastatin prevents myocardial damages via up regulation of endogenous oxidants along with its hypocholesterolemic activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Early detection of oral cancer is one of the most efficient ways to reduce the high mortality from this disease because of the ready accessibility of the oral cavity. We need to devise urgent diagnostic tools to detect early oral premalignant and malignant lesions. Aim: The aim of the present study was to grade the oral lesions in an attempt toward developing a novel cytological grading system. Further, morphometric analysis of cellular parameters was also performed to compare their significance in differentiating benign from malignant lesions. Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital catering to the low socioeconomic population. Patients presenting in the various Out Patient Departments with suspicious oral lesions were evaluated by cytology in the Department of Pathology. Results: A total of 72 patients were evaluated with a mean age of 43.54 ± 10.35 years. The involvement of the buccal mucosa was the most common site of oral lesions. Cytologically, the lesions were graded according to the oral/oro-pharyngeal cytology grading system into grades A to F. Cyto-morphometric analysis showed an increasing trend in mean nuclear diameter from benign to malignant cases while the mean cytoplasmic diameter decreased, value of P < 0.05 was observed indicating a statistically significant difference between the two groups. Conclusions: Cytological features of pleomorphism are a unique feature in oral carcinoma reflecting intracellular alterations in cells. Grading of lesions according to cytological characteristics can be helpful in standardizing the reporting of the oral lesion. However, our study was restricted by limited data; we emphasize more extensive studies to assess the usefulness and applicability of such a grading system. Background: Amyloidosis is characterized by the deposition of polymeric fibrillar proteins in the extracellular compartment in tissues and organs ultimately leading to damage with functional compromise. Cutaneous amyloidosis is clinically classified into more common macular, papular and the rarer nodular form. The present study was undertaken with the aim to histopathologically analyze and characterize clinically diagnosed amyloid cases. Methods:The present study was a retrospective analysis of skin biopsies conducted over a one year period. Data on the age and presenting clinical features were retrieved from the accompanying laboratory request forms or patients records wherever available. All skin biopsies with a histologic diagnosis of amyloid were retrieved and reviewed, the pattern of amyloid deposition identified and classified. Special stains including Congo Red stain was done in all the cases. Results: Histopathological confirmation of cutaneous amyloidosis was seen in nine out of fourteen cases and was confirmed by positive Congo-red stain under polarized light. Out of this seven were females and two were males. Majority of the lesions were of macular type. In all the nine cases, family history was negative and no evidence of systemic involvement was noted, either clinically or based upon the lab investigations. Conclusions: In this pilot study of 9 cases, histologically diagnosed as cutaneous amyloidosis we noted a female preponderance in young and middle-aged persons. Introduction: Gallbladder diseases are very common in Northern India, most common of which is Chronic Cholecystitis. Rarely, histopathological diagnosis of Eosinophilic Cholecystitis (EC) is given when transmural cellular infiltrate consists of more than 90% eosinophils. Aim: To determine the prevalence and clinicopathological profile of eosinophilic cholecystitis at a tertiary care hospital of New Delhi. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective clinicopathological study done on twenty two cases of eosinophilic cholecystitis over a period of five years from January 2011-December 2015. In cases diagnosed histopathologically as eosinophilic cholecystitis, clinical details were obtained from hospital records and slides were retrieved. Various histologic features, pattern of the inflammatory infiltrate and association of EC with other medical diseases, drugs and allergic states were evaluated. results: Out of a total of 1370 cholecystectomy specimens received during five year period, Eosinophilic cholecystitis was diagnosed in 22 (1.6%) of the specimens. Clinically, seven of these patients had a clinical diagnosis of acute cholecystitis. Patient's age ranged from 25-64 years and male to female ratio was 1:2.7. Most common symptom reported was abdominal pain. Most of the cases showed gallstones radiologically (90%) while only two cases showed peripheral eosinophilia (9%). Histologically, mucosal and muscular eosinophilic infiltrate was seen in 72.6% of the cases. No association with drug therapy, allergies or other pre-existing medical conditions was noted. conclusion: EC is a relatively uncommon entity in which histopathology remains the main stay of diagnosis. Although the presentation may be similar to general cholecystitis, if a postoperative histopathological diagnosis of EC is made, then the patient must be investigated thoroughly to rule out other associated disease conditions, which may have a worse prognosis than cholecystitis itself. Tuberculosis (TB) and malignancy are among the most important current global health problems. Many authors suggest that their coexistence is a chance association owing to their high prevalence. There is, however, enough evidence that one condition may predispose the other. In our retrospective report of two cases, TB in draining lymph nodes was discovered incidentally on histopathology, following surgical resection for malignancy. The possibility of coexistent lesions, especially in regions endemic for TB, mandate a detailed histopathological examination to prevent the chances of diagnostic failure and thus therapeutic error. Heterotopic or ectopic tissue is a congenital anomaly, which is defined as the presence of the tissue outside its normal location, without neural, vascular, or anatomic connection with the main body of an organ in which it normally exists. This tissue is usually discovered incidentally and may be asymptomatic or may present with nonspecific gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. Pancreatic and gastric heterotopia are the two predominantly occurring heterotopic tissues in the GI tract.[1],[2] The prevalence of ectopic pancreatic tissue in the GI tract ranges from 0.6% to 13.7% of autopsy series and it can be present anywhere in the GI tract with the most common localizations being stomach (27.5%), duodenum (25.5%), colon (15.9%), esophagus, and Meckel's diverticulum.[3],[4],[5] It is a rare finding in the gallbladder and its prevalence has not been ascertained due to lack of large-scale studies and systematic review of literature. Similarly, heterotopic gastric tissue is common throughout the GI tract from the tongue to the rectum,[6],[7] but it is extremely rare in the gallbladder with only around 34 cases reported in literature so far, while other cases of different types of heterotopic tissues in the gallbladder such as liver tissue and others such as adrenal and thyroid tissues have been described.[8] The most common presentation of ectopic tissue in the gallbladder is colicky pain in the epigastrium or right upper quadrant sometimes associated with nausea and vomiting.
