Shock wave visual detection was traditionally performed using streak cameras, limited to homogeneous shock wave emission, with the corresponding shock wave pressure measurements available at rather large distances or numerically estimated through equation of state for water. We demonstrate a multi-frame multi-exposure shock wave velocity measurement technique for all in-plane directions of propagation, based on custom-built illumination system allowing multiple illumination pulses within each frame at multi-MHz frame rates and at up to 200 MHz illumination pulse repetition frequency at sub-nanosecond pulse durations. The measurements are combined and verified using a fiber-optic probe hydrophone, providing independent shock wave pressure and time-of-flight measurements, creating a novel all-optical measurement setup. The measured pressures at distances around 100 µm from the plasma center exceed 500 MPa, while camera-based measurements at even shorter distances indicate pressures above 1 GPa.

In this manuscript we present a true pulse-on-demand laser design concept using two different approaches. First, we present a fiber master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) based quasi-continuous wave (CW) laser, working at high modulation bandwidths, for generation of nanosecond pulses. Second, we present a hybrid chirped pulse amplification (CPA)-based laser, combining a chirped-pulse fiber amplifier and an additional solid-state amplifier, for generation of femtosecond pulses. The pulse-on-demand operation is achieved without an external optical modulator/shutter at high-average powers and flexible repetition rates up to 40 MHz, using two variants of the approach for near-constant gain in the amplifier chain. The idler and marker seed sources are combined in the amplifier stages and separated at the out using either wavelength-based separation or second harmonic generation (SHG)-generation-based separation. The nanosecond laser source is further applied to high throughput processing of thin film materials. The laser is combined with a resonant scanner, using the intrinsic pulse-on-demand operation to compensate the scanner’s sinusoidal movement. We applied the setup to processing of indium tin oxide (ITO) and metallic films on flexible substrates.

The nucleation and growth of cavitation bubbles few micrometers in size in water generated by a 60 ps 515 nm fiber laser is observed and visualized near nucleation threshold. The study is performed by monitoring the plasma size, the cavitation bubble size and the emitted shock waves. The latter two aspects are supported by the Gilmore model using a Noble-Abel-stiffened-gas (NASG) equations of state. For the first time, two types of cavitation events are identified and visualized that exhibit a difference of more than two orders of magnitude in the excitation energy converted to mechanical effects with minimal change in excitation laser pulse energy. The result is localized cavitation and reduced mechanical stress on water-based media with potentially positive implications for laser treatments of biological tissue.

The collapse of microbubbles near a fiber is an example often encountered in water treatment situations and cavitation fibrillation processes. However, due to the broken symmetry conditions, this process has not been studied in detail experimentally or numerically, making it difficult to precisely measure or simulate the rapid bubble evolution during collapse. In this work, we present a novel experimental method, allowing for precisely repeatable cavitation events observation, combined with numerical simulations offering insight into pressure and velocity fields distribution developments in time. Both experimental and numerical works focused on small distances between the bubble and the fiber, where the physical interaction between subjects is the strongest. Four different bubble offsets were considered within the scope of this work, and very good agreement of numerical simulations with experiments was found in all cases. Two modes of bubble collapse were identified, leading to mushroom-shaped bubbles at positions closest to the fiber and a pear-shaped bubble at the farthest position. It is noteworthy that in all four cases, a planar jet formation toward the fiber was observed. The formed jet initially assumes an elongated shape, whereas its stability depends on the mode of bubble collapse. Numerical analysis of the planar jet as the defining feature of the collapse defined lower bounds for the actual values of peak jet velocities, ranging between 250 and 330 m/s, and the resulting impact pressures, which range from 100to 500 MPa.

Precise excitation of cavitation is a promising mechanism for microsurgery procedures and targeted drug delivery enhancement. The underlying phenomenon of interest, jetting behaviour of oscillating cavitation bubbles, occurs due to near-surface interactions between the boundary, liquid, and bubble. Within this study we measured boundary effects on the cavitation bubble dynamics and morphology, with an emphasis on observation and measurement of jetting behaviour near tissue-phantom biointerfaces. An important mechanism of boundary poration has been observed using time-resolved optical microscopy and explained for different tissue-phantom surface densities and Young’s modulus. Below a critical distance to the boundary, around γ = 1.0, the resulting jets penetrated the tissue-phantom, resulting in highly localized few micrometer diameter jets.

Laser operation in bursts of pulses has recently attracted a lot of attention, as high average powers and pulse energies have become available. Bursts of pulses have become a mean to achieve different laser-matter interaction regimes with a single laser source. We have used an ultra-short pulse laser source in combination with an external array of birefringent crystals to generate near-THz bursts of single-picosecond pulses. Variability of the setup and high single pulse energy were exploited to generate bursts of up to 16 pulses at different delays between consecutive pulses. The experimental setup was applied for surface processing of different industrially relevant materials, including metals, ceramics, and polyimides. The goal of this study was to find out if the reduced ablation thresholds using near-THz bursts of pulses as reported in previous studies of other group could be utilized for increased ablation efficiency. Our findings show that near-THz bursts of pulses interact with materials in a similar fashion as a single, albeit longer, pulse would. We observed a clear trend on all the tested materials, showing a declining ablation efficiency with increasing total burst duration at a fixed pulse repetition frequency. Findings contradict the results of other groups concluding on an improved efficiency of laser to material energy transfer using bursts at near-THz intra-burst repetition rates. A simple model describing ablation efficiency decline with pulse prolongation was used to compare the experimental data with theoretical predictions. Detailed analysis of surface ablation effects on metallic materials also revealed a presence of melting processes typically associated with laser pulses above 10 ps in duration as opposed to original 1.5 ps pulses.

To avoid a devastating effect of eye vision impairment on the information flow from the eye to our brain, enormous effort is being put during the last decades into the development of more sensitive diagnostics and more efficient therapies of retinal tissue. While morphology can be impressively imaged by optical coherence tomography, molecular-associated pathology information can be provided almost exclusively by auto-fluorescence-based methods. Among the latter, the recently developed fluorescence lifetime imaging ophthalmoscopy (FLIO) has the potential to provide both structural information and interacting pictures at the same time. The requirements for FLIO laser sources are almost orthogonal to the laser sources used in phototherapy that is expected to follow up the FLIO diagnostics. To make theranostics more effective and cheaper, the complete system would need to couple at least the modalities of low-power high-repetition-rate FLIO and precision high-pulse energy-adjustable repetition rate phototherapy. In addition, the intermediate-power high repetition rate for two-photon excitation would also be desired to increase the depth resolution. In our work, compact fiber-laser based on high-speed gain-switched laser diode has been shown to achieve adaptable/independently tunable repetition rate and energy per pulse allowing coupled fluorescence lifetime diagnostics via two-photon excitation and phototherapy via laser-induced photodisruption on a local molecular environment in a complex ex vivo retinal tissue.

Modern electronics facilitate the need for fast, efficient, and reliable methods for direct laser-based surface engineering of conductive thin film materials on flexible substrates. Recent advances in pulsed laser source development only incrementally increased the processing speeds, as those are limited by the available scanning systems. Our goal was to combine a high pulse repetition frequency high-power pulse-on-demand fiber laser source with an ultra-fast resonant scanner to achieve high throughput surface engineering. The enabling factor to compensate a resonant scanner’s sinusoidal movement were the laser’s intrinsic pulse-on-demand capabilities beyond simple pulse picking solutions. The high temporal resolution at full laser power was exploited for spatially controlled surface texturing, allowing a minimally 3 μm positioning accuracy throughout the scanner’s range at up to 60 m/s scan speed with a 10 μm laser spot size. We applied the setup to processing of ITO and metallic films on flexible substrates for touchscreens, position sensors, or EM shielding. Surface modification and patterning of the conductive layer was successfully demonstrated while keeping the underlying surface intact. We employed a simple laser ablation model in comparison to the experimental data to improve the understanding of the ablation process. The resulting surface topography was observed and analysed.

Tissue diseases and related disorders need to be first recognized using diagnostic methods and then later treated by therapeutic methods–a joint procedure called theranostics. One of the main challenges in the field of retinal therapies remains in the success of the treatment, typically improving the local metabolism, by sparing the surrounding tissue and with the immediate information of the laser effect. In our study, we present a concept for real-time controlled tissue theranostics on a proof-of-concept study capable of using a single tunable ps laser source (in terms of irradiance, fluence, and repetition rate), done on ex-vivo human retinal pigment epithelium. We have found autofluorescence intensity and lifetime imaging diagnostics very promising for the recognition and quantification of laser effects ranging from selective non-destructive molecular tissue modification to complete tissue ablation. The main novelty of our work presents the developed algorithm for optimized theranostics based on the model function used to quantify laser-induced tissue changes through the diagnostics descriptors, fluorescence lifetime and fluorescence intensity parameters. This approach, together with the operation of the single adaptable laser source, can serve as a new theranostics method in personalized medicine in the future not only limited to treat retinal diseases.

The intermediate pulse duration regime between typical ultra-short and nanosecond pulses has been investigated using MHz-range bursts of 70 ps pulses emitted from a custom-made fiber laser source. The goal of this study was to observe and understand the processes involved during laser ablation on the timescales from picoseconds to nanoseconds, relevant due to pulses in bursts. We developed material processing approaches that enable similar behaviour as single 70 ps pulse ablation to ultra-short pulses in terms of quality and burst-mode behaviour like nanosecond pulses in terms of efficiency. The variability of the fiber laser operation modes was studied and compared to both ultra-short and nanosecond pulses from standard laser sources.

We have developed an efficient, high precision system for direct laser microstructuring using fiber laser generated bursts of picosecond pulses. An advanced opto-mechanical system for beam deflection and sample movement, precise pulse energy control, and a custom built fiber laser with the pulse duration of 65 ps have been combined in a compact setup. The setup allows structuring of single-micrometer sized objects with a nanometer resolution of the laser beam positioning due to a combination of acousto-optical laser beam deflection and tight focusing. The precise synchronization of the fiber laser with the pulse burst repetition frequency of up to 100 kHz allowed a wide range of working parameters, including a tuneable number of pulses in each burst with the intra-burst repetition frequency of 40 MHz and delivering exactly one burst of pulses to every chosen position. We have demonstrated that tightly focused bursts of pulses significantly increase the ablation efficiency during the microstructuring of a copper layer and shorten the typical processing time compared to the single pulse per spot regime. We have used a simple short-pulse ablation model to describe our single pulse ablation data and developed an upgrade to the model to describe the ablation with bursts. Bursts of pulses also contribute to a high quality definition of structure edges and sides. The increased ablation efficiency at lower pulse energies compared to the single pulse per spot regime opens a window to utilize compact fiber lasers designed to operate at lower pulse energies, reducing the overall system complexity and size.

We have investigated the process of copper layer ablation with a tightly focused Q-switched 532 nm laser. Focusing 40 ns long laser pulses to a micrometer-sized spot results in high energy density and gives rise to ablation phenomena not seen during laser processing with larger beam diameters. Use of acousto-optic deflectors (AODs) enabled us to test different laser beam steering approaches in terms of choosing the position for each laser pulse independently of the previous pulses. Random addressing of desired positions across a microstructure proved to be the most efficient method compared to various scanning approaches. Assigning a random order to the spatial sequence of laser pulses resulted in the fastest microstructuring process and featured lowest residual heating of the substrate.

Pulsed laser sources facilitate various applications, including efficient material removal in different scientific and industrial applications. Commercially available laser systems in the field typically use a focused laser beam of 10-20 [micro] m in diameter. In line with the ongoing trends of miniaturization, we have developed a picosecond fiber laser-based system combining fast beam deflection and tight focusing for material processing and optical applications. We have predicted and verified the system's precision, resolution, and minimum achievable feature size for material processing applications. The analysis of the laser's performance requirements for the specific applications of high-precision laser processing is an important aspect for further development of the technique. We have predicted and experimentally verified that maximal edge roughness of single-micrometer-sized features was below 200 nm, including the laser's energy and positioning stability, beam deflection, the effect of spot spacing, and efficient isolation of mechanical vibrations. We have demonstrated that a novel fiber laser operating regime in bursts of pulses increases the laser energy stability. The results of our research improve the potential of fiber laser sources for material processing applications and facilitate their use through enabling the operation at lower pulse energies in bursts as opposed to single pulse regimes.

Laser ablation and modification using bursts of picosecond pulses and a tightly focused laser beam are used to manufacture structures in the bulk silicon. We demonstrate precise control of the surface crystallinity as well as the structure depth and topography of the processed areas, achieving homogeneous surface properties. The control is achieved with a combination of a well-defined pulse energy, systematic pulse positioning on the material, and the number of pulses in a burst. A custom designed fiber laser source is used to generate bursts of 1, 5, 10, and 20 pulses at a pulse repetition rate of 40 MHz and burst repetition rate of 83.3 kHz allowing for a fast and stable processing of silicon. We show a controlled transition through different laser-matter interaction regimes, from no observable changes of the silicon at low pulse energies, through amorphization below the ablation threshold energy, to the ablation with either complete, partial or nonexistent amorphization. Single micrometer-sized areas of desired shape and crystallinity were defined on the silicon surface with submicron precision, offering a promising tool for applications in the field of optics.

Novel fluorescence microscopy techniques and two-color laser direct imaging photolithography methods that enable resolution an order of magnitude beyond the diffraction limit require Laguerre-Gaussian beams and a fast and precise laser beam steering device to obtain images and produce microstructures. An acousto-optic deflector (AOD) is a suitable choice and provides high-speed random access beam positioning with subnanometer precision as well as beam intensity control in a single element. In high-resolution applications, the impact of an AOD on beam quality plays a major role. We study the transfer function of an AOD for a fundamental Gaussian and a doughnut-shaped Laguerre-Gaussian beam by measuring the beam quality as a function of the diffraction angle after passing through the device. It is demonstrated that an AOD introduces negligible distortion and degradation to the beam profile and is therefore highly suitable for use in super-resolution imaging and photolithography techniques where manipulation of Laguerre-Gaussian doughnut-shaped beams is required.
