Recognizing the deviation in an animal's behavior from a population mean is not only necessary to understand the evolution and stability of the whole system but also to predict the future of a population in a changing environment. Arctic seabirds are expected to exhibit high synchronization in timing of breeding at the population level, due to highly seasonal and harsh environmental conditions. Nevertheless, even in such a highly synchronized system, there are always some earlier and later breeders, and the drivers of inter-pair variation remain largely unknown. Using an 8-year dataset on Alle alle (Dovekie), a small Arctic seabird, we examined potential drivers of breeding phenology. We found that A. alle pairs were quite repeatable in their phenology, and preserved their phenological status, with their chicks hatching consistently before, during, or after the population median date for hatching, despite that the calendar position of the median shifted between years. This would suggest that timing of breeding is associated with some pair characteristics, either via properties of the nest and/or some partner's traits. However, breeding phenology of the pair was not dependent on nest location, pair bond duration or morphological similarity of the partners. Importantly, timing of breeding was negatively associated with chick growth rate, indicating fitness consequences of phenology. A simulation in our study further suggests that the chance of fledgling survival in the context of predation may be the highest for the chicks that hatched during the peak of the hatching period. While our results suggest that the timing of the breeding is important for the reproductive outcome, further research is required to determine the drivers of the consistent breeding phenology within A. alle pairs. Alternative hypotheses have been proposed regarding how the hormone corticosterone (CORT) mediates energy expenditure during reproduction. Elevated baseline CORT (CORTb) could support daily energy expenditure (DEE), promoting reproductive effort or downregulate costly behaviours in low quality individuals facing allostatic overload.We investigated relationships between CORTb, time activity budgets (TABs), DEE and diving behaviour across 2 years and colonies of little auk (Alle alle), an Arctic seabird in which elevating DEE may support reproduction in the face of climate change.We also explored whether mercury (Hg) contamination might suppress DEE by affecting the hypothalamus‐pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis and CORT production.Furthermore, we performed phylogenetically controlled analysis across breeding seabird species to build broader understanding of CORT‐DEE relationships.CORTb positively correlated with little auk activity, DEE and dive duration during a cold year in East Greenland, when CORTb was elevated in the population, but not during a warmer year, or at Svalbard. CORTb did not predict chick provisioning nor did Hg suppress CORTb.Across breeding seabird species, CORTb and DEE were uncorrelated. Rather, contrary to predictions, CORTb was higher in species breeding at lower latitudes.Intraspecific results suggest environment‐dependent relationships between CORTb, behaviour and DEE, with implications for understanding CORTb's role in climate change resiliency.Interspecific analyses suggest absence of correlational selection between CORTb and DEE during reproduction, and that DEE thresholds that induce changes in CORTb might differ between species. Currently, parental care is becoming increasingly perceived as male and female cooperation, instead of being primarily shaped by sexual conflict. Most studies examining cooperating performance consider coordination of parental activities, and doing so focuses on a short time-window including only one stage of breeding (i.e., incubation or chick rearing period). Here, we considered the cooperation of breeding partners, investigating the coordination of parental care in a long-lived seabird species with long and extensive biparental care, the Dovekie (or Little Auk), Alle alle, and looked at the issue throughout the breeding season. Previous studies on this species revealed coordinated chick provisioning, but parental coordination during incubation remains unstudied. Using video recordings collected over the course of two breeding seasons, we tested whether coordination was subject to small-scale changes within each stage and whether there was a relationship between coordination levels across the two stages. We found that the level of parental coordination is overall high and increases during the incubation period but decreases through the chick rearing phases. There were some inter-annual differences in the coordination level both at the incubation and chick rearing stages. We also found some dependency between the coordination during the incubation and chick rearing periods. All these results suggest that coordination is not a fixed behavior but breeding-phase dependent. The present study thus provides insights into how parental care and parents' cooperation is shaped by brood needs and conditions. It also highlights a relationship between coordination levels during chick rearing and incubation periods, suggesting some extent of temporal dependence in coordination of parental performance within the breeding season. Simple Summary: In this study, we investigated differences in the non-fish diet components of the Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) at both regional and local scales. We found significant inter-regional and inter-colony differences, not only in the diet but also in the habitat composition of foraging areas. We also identified significant relationships between some prey items and different habitats. This study shows that the opportunistic character of the diet of the Grey Heron is adapted to the local foraging habitat and the availability of non-fish prey. Habitat structure on foraging ground is one of the crucial factors determining diet diversity in colonially breeding avian predators. Quantifying the habitat and diet composition at different spatial scales (regional and local inter-colonial) can help provide understanding of the drivers of diet composition. In this study, we examined the composition of the non-fish diet of an opportunistic predator, the Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), based on pellets. We compared pellets from 21 colonies in two different regions of Poland that differing in composition of foraging habitats. Multivariate statistical techniques were used to analyze the relationship between diet and habitat compositions in a 20 km radius around these colonies. Significant inter-regional and inter-colony differences in Grey Heron diet and habitat composition were detected in foraging areas. However, some prey were present in the diet only from one of the regions. Around the heronries with a predominance of farmland habitats, the European water vole (Arvicola amphibius) and terrestrial invertebrates were present in relatively low frequencies, and the striped field mouse (Apodemus agrarius) was present in high frequencies. Voles (Microtus sp.) were more frequent in colonies with prevalence of non-irrigated arable land around the colony, in contrast to the bank vole (Myodes glareolus), which was less common in heronries with a higher contribution of this habitat type. Remains of aquatic invertebrates were less abundant in colonies surrounded by extensive forests. The results of our research indicate the opportunistic character of the non-fish part of the diet of the Grey Heron adapted to the local foraging habitat and prey availability. The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) plays a key role in the adaptive immune system of vertebrates, and is known to influence mate choice in many species. In birds, the MHC has been extensively examined but mainly in galliforms and passerines while other taxa that represent specific ecological and evolutionary life-histories, like seabirds, are underexamined. Here, we characterized diversity of MHC Class II B exon 2 in a colonial pelagic seabird, the Little Auk (or Dovekie Alle alle). We further examined whether MHC variation could be maintained through balancing selection and disassortative mating. We found high polymorphism at the genotyped MHC fragment, characterizing 99 distinct alleles across 140 individuals from three populations. The alleles frequencies exhibited a similar skewed distribution in both sexes, with the four most commonly occurring alleles representing approximately 35% of allelic variation. The results of a Bayesian site-by-site selection analysis suggest evidence of balancing selection and no direct evidence for MHC-dependent disassortative mating preferences in the Little Auk. The latter result might be attributed to the high overall polymorphism of the examined fragment, which itself may be maintained by the large population size of the species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polymorphism has been described in many avian taxa including Ardeidae. This study investigated the spatio-temporal distribution of color polymorphic forms (with regard to the color of the unfeathered parts (legs/lores)) of the Great White Egret Ardea alba alba in internet images from Europe. In total, 140 images of presumed polymorphs from 16 countries (from 2006 to 2021) have been collected and examined. Eight coloration schemes of visible unfeathered parts were distinguished. Since some polymorphs may represent the subspecies Eastern Great Egret Ardea alba modesta, the ratio of beak length to total head length was compared among individuals representing the nominal and Eastern Great Egret subspecies. The ratio distributions were similar in all compared groups; thus, polymorph egrets may represent both of these subspecies. Most polymorph images originate from the Netherlands and the southwestern Norwegian coast. This may have resulted from specific local diets and contact with hormone-disrupting compounds. Nevertheless, some observation biases, such as the presence of local breeding population or high numbers of nature photographers, could have affected our observation pattern. Some analyzed features also followed temporal patterns. Most polymorphs were observed during the breeding season, suggesting disruptions of sex hormones as a possible cause. Studies of spatio-temporal patterns of polymorph occurrence may allow us to obtain insights into the causes of large variation in coloration schemes in polymorphic species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
