The evolution of nuclear spin state populations is investigated for the case of a 13C2-labeled triyne in solution, for which the near-equivalent coupled pairs of 13C nuclei experience cross-correlated relaxation mechanisms. Inversion-recovery experiments reveal different recovery curves for the main peak amplitudes, especially when the conversion of population imbalances to observable coherences is induced by a radio frequency pulse with a small flip angle. Measurements are performed over a range of magnetic fields by using a sample shuttle apparatus. In some cases, the time constant TS for decay of nuclear singlet order is more than 100 times larger than the time constant T1 for the equilibration of longitudinal magnetization. The results are interpreted by a theoretical model incorporating cross-correlated relaxation mechanisms, anisotropic rotational diffusion, and an external random magnetic field. A Lindbladian formalism is used to describe the dissipative dynamics of the spin system in an environment of finite temperature. Good agreement is achieved between theory and experiment. Surfers both cooperate and compete around a scarce natural resource – ocean waves suited for surfing – often with a fraught mix of motives and feelings, pro-social and anti-social. Much as surfers constantly adapt to a dynamic wave environment, their pro- and anti-social motives readily mix and shift, based on their interpretation of quickly changing context. What we learn from surfers is something materialistic focus on self-interest and realities of scarcity or abundance might de-emphasize or miss: a culture of interpretation and reasoning (e.g. 'localism') is as important in the formation of shifting pro- and anti-social attitudes as the material reality of wave scarcity or abundance itself. Understanding the daily energy expenditure of athletes during training is important to support recovery, adaptation, and the maintenance of performance. The aim of the current research was to assess the total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) and the acute energy expenditure (EE) of tennis training sessions during habitual training of elite tennis players. Using a cohort study design, 27 (n = 10, male; age; 22.3 ± 3.2 years and n = 17, female; age: 23.8 ± 3.5 years) elite singles tennis players were assessed for TDEE and tennis training EE. Using Actiheart activity monitors during a 2- to 5-day training period, male players were analyzed for 26 days and 33 (1.3 ± 0.5 sessions/day) tennis training sessions, and female players for 43 days and 58 (1.2 ± 0.4 sessions/day) tennis training sessions. Male TDEE (4,708 ± 583 kcal/day) was significantly higher than female (3,639 ± 305 kcal/day). Male absolute and relative tennis training EEs (10.2 ± 2.3 kcal/min and 7.9 ± 1.4 kcal·hr−1·kg−1) were significantly higher than those of females (7.6 ± 1.0 kcal/min and 6.8 ± 0.9 kcal·hr−1·kg−1). The resting metabolic rate was assessed via indirect calorimetry. The physical activity level for both groups was 2.3 AU. The TDEE of male and female players during habitual training now highlights the continual cycle of high energy demands experienced by the elite tennis player. Gaussian Approximation Potentials (GAPs) are a class of Machine Learned Interatomic Potentials routinely used to model materials and molecular systems on the atomic scale. The software implementation provides the means for both fitting models using ab initio data and using the resulting potentials in atomic simulations. Details of the GAP theory, algorithms and software are presented, together with detailed usage examples to help new and existing users. We review some recent developments to the GAP framework, including Message Passing Interface parallelisation of the fitting code enabling its use on thousands of central processing unit cores and compression of descriptors to eliminate the poor scaling with the number of different chemical elements. Recent years have seen an explosion of interest in organic radicals due to their promise for highly efficient organic light-emitting diodes and molecular qubits. However, accurately and inexpensively computing their electronic structure has been challenging, especially for excited states, due to the spin-contamination problem. Furthermore, while alternacy or "pseudoparity" rules have guided the interpretation and prediction of the excited states of closed-shell hydrocarbons since the 1950s, similar general rules for hydrocarbon radicals have not to our knowledge been found yet. In this article, we present solutions to both of these challenges. First, we combine the extended configuration interaction singles method with Pariser–Parr–Pople (PPP) theory to obtain a method that we call ExROPPP (Extended Restricted Open-shell PPP) theory. We find that ExROPPP computes spin-pure excited states of hydrocarbon radicals with comparable accuracy to experiment as high-level general multi-configurational quasi-degenerate perturbation theory calculations but at a computational cost that is at least two orders of magnitude lower. We then use ExROPPP to derive widely applicable rules for the spectra of alternant hydrocarbon radicals, which are completely consistent with our computed results. One of the most reactive intermediates for oxidative reactions is the oxyl radical, an electron-deficient oxygen atom. The discovery of a new vibration upon photoexcitation of the oxygen evolution catalysis detected the oxyl radical at the SrTiO3 surface. The vibration was assigned to a motion of the sub-surface oxygen underneath the titanium oxyl (Ti–O●−) created upon hole transfer to (or electron extraction from) a hydroxylated surface site. Evidence for such an interfacial mode is derived from its spectral shape, which exhibited a Fano resonance—a coupling of a sharp normal mode to continuum excitations. Here, this Fano resonance is utilized to derive precise formation kinetics of the oxyl radical and its associated potential energy surface (PES). From the Fano lineshape, the formation kinetics are obtained from the anti-resonance (the kinetics of the coupling factor), the resonance (the kinetics of the coupled continuum excitations), and the frequency integrated spectrum (the kinetics of the normal mode's cross-section). All three perspectives yield logistic function growth with a half-rise of 2.3 ± 0.3 ps and a time constant of 0.48 ± 0.09 ps. A non-equilibrium transient associated with photoexcitation is separated from the rise of the equilibrated PES. The logistic function characterizes the oxyl coverage at the very initial stages (t ∼ 0) to have an exponential growth rate that quickly decreases toward zero as a limiting coverage is reached. Such time-dependent reaction kinetics identify a dynamic activation barrier associated with the formation of a PES and quantify it for oxyl radical coverage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context: The Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) is a commonly used clinical tool to evaluate postural control that is traditionally performed through visual assessment and subjective evaluation of balance errors. The purpose of this study was to evaluate an automated computer-based scoring system using an instrumented pressure mat compared to the traditional human-based manual assessment. Design: A descriptive cross-sectional study design was used to evaluate the performance of the automated versus human BESS scoring methodology in healthy individuals. Methods: Fifty-one healthy active participants performed BESS trials following standard BESS procedures on an instrumented pressure mat (MobileMat, Tekscan Inc). Trained evaluators manually scored balance errors from frontal and sagittal plane video recordings for comparison to errors scored using center of force measurements and an automated scoring software (SportsAT, version 2.0.2, Tekscan Inc). A linear mixed model was used to determine measurement discrepancies across the 2 methods. Bland–Altman analyses were conducted to determine limit of agreement for the automated and manual scoring methods. Results: Significant differences between the automated and manual errors scored were observed across all conditions (P <.05), excluding bilateral firm stance. The greatest discrepancy between scoring methods was during the tandem foam stance, while the smallest discrepancy was during the tandem firm stance. Conclusion: The 2 methods of BESS scoring are different with wide limits of agreement. The purpose of this study was to identify the supports and barriers women coaches experience at the organizational level and to determine how those factors influence interpersonal- and individual-level factors within their coaching context. Nine women who coach high school basketball were interviewed at two time points and asked to reflect on organizational-level factors relative to their coaching position and how those factors have shaped their coaching experience over time. Based on the results of the interviews, two organizational-level factors were identified as barriers for participants: navigating inconsistent hiring practices and hypermasculine culture within school sport. The participants described organizational-level factors as influencing their experiences at both interpersonal (e.g., support from mentors, barriers related to the athletic directors) and individual (e.g., age, experience, sexual orientation) levels. The findings provide empirical support for specific organizational factors that contribute to interpersonal- and individual-level coach experiences. In this study, we obtain an exact time-dependent solution of the chemical master equation (CME) of an extension of the two-state telegraph model describing bursty or non-bursty protein expression in the presence of positive or negative autoregulation. Using the method of spectral decomposition, we show that the eigenfunctions of the generating function solution of the CME are Heun functions, while the eigenvalues can be determined by solving a continued fraction equation. Our solution generalizes and corrects a previous time-dependent solution for the CME of a gene circuit describing non-bursty protein expression in the presence of negative autoregulation [Ramos et al., Phys. Rev. E 83, 062902 (2011)]. In particular, we clarify that the eigenvalues are generally not real as previously claimed. Chain adsorption to nanofiller interfaces creating bound layers has become central to understanding property changes in polymer nanocomposites. We determine the impact different kinds of adsorbed layers can have on the local glass transition temperature Tg of polymer matrices in a model film system using a localized fluorescence method. This work compares the adsorption and desorption of adsorbed layers grown in solution with the solution washing characteristics of adsorbed layers formed in the melt, leveraging knowledge about polymer adsorption in solution to infer the structure of adsorbed layers formed in the melt. In the limit of zero concentration after a long time in solution, we find that both kinds of adsorbed layers reach the same limiting adsorbed amount h∞(c → 0) ≈ 1 nm, appearing to evolve to the same thermodynamic equilibrium state of a near monolayer of surface coverage. We propose that melt annealing leads to a coarsening of polymer segment–surface contacts, increasing the length of trains and shrinking loops and tails, slowing the subsequent kinetics of these adsorbed chains in solution. Considering how the pyrene-labeled chains intermix with the adsorbed layer enables us to discriminate between the impact of tails, loops, and trains as threading of loops takes longer. We find that large fluffy loops, tails, and trains have little to no impact on the local Tg. A large 30 K increase in local Tg is observed for 30-min solvent washed well-annealed films at long intermixing times that we attribute to the threading of small tight loops. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A systematic review and meta-analysis of sputter yield data for xenon ions normally incident on graphite at energies below 2000 eV was undertaken to identify systematic errors, determine the best model parameter values to represent yield as a function of energy, quantify uncertainty, and determine if the data support differences in yields for different types of graphite. A critical examination of the 11 published data sets for high density graphite, pyrolytic graphite, and amorphous carbon showed that, in general, they were carefully controlled to minimize errors. The most significant quantifiable systematic errors were those caused by the neglect of doubly charged ions, chemical erosion, and the impact of secondary electron emission on ion flux measurements. The effects of gas uptake and outgassing on mass loss measurements and unrepresentative surface textures may have biased other experiments, but these effects could not be quantified. The semi-empirical Eckstein model for yield as a function of energy was fit to data for the three graphite types using a hierarchical Bayesian statistical model, producing recommended fit parameters and probability distributions representing uncertainty in yields. The results showed that differences in yield for high density graphite and pyrolytic graphite were not statistically significant. Apparent differences in yield for amorphous carbon disappeared when the single data set available for energies below 150 eV was corrected for reasonable values of double ion content. Electromagnetic shielding is a critical function in various technologies, which is ideally achieved using a metal that reflects all incident radiation below its plasma frequency. Using high-resolution finite difference frequency domain simulations at microwave/RF frequencies, we show that the same efficacy can be achieved using a disordered collection of metal nanoparticles embedded in a flexible material. The mechanism underlying the reflection in the composite material is wave localization, disallowing the propagation of radiation up to the plasma frequency of the metal that constitutes the particles. We realize such a biopolymer composite using DNA–CTMA (deoxyribonucleic acid–cetyltrimethylammonium complex) as a support structure for Ag nanoparticles. This biopolymer composite exhibits an extremely high shielding effectiveness, close to that of a metal slab, because of Anderson localization of the electromagnetic waves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The reactions of Cl, Br, and I with Nan=2,3 produced in a supersonic expansion form Na2* and Na* excited states extending across the visible and ultraviolet regions. Emission in the region extending from 410 to 600 nm indicates selectively formed excited state Na2 emission features. Experimental evidence suggests that this emission is associated with Na3 + X reactions. Broadband (0.5 cm−1) laser measurements demonstrate gain (population inversion) for select features at∼524–528(1%), ∼492(0.3%), and ∼458.7–461(0.8%) nm. Single mode (0.007 cm−1) measurements extending from 528.03 to 527.63 nm demonstrate amplification involving five to six individual rovibronic levels with a maximum gain close to 3% recorded at 527.9 nm. The observed gain is associated with select transitions from levels of the Na2 11Πu state populated, via identified curve crossings, through collision induced transfer from long-lived Na2 21Σg+ and 11Πg reservoir states. Collision induced population buildup in the lowest vibrational levels of these reservoir states and collision induced transfer to the Na2 11Πu state create a population inversion in transitions to the X 1Σg+ state of Na2. The observed amplification is aided by rapid vibrational and rotational relaxation in both the Na2 ground and excited reservoir states producing amplifiers in the visible region like the HF amplifier in the infrared. This study suggests the importance of reaction populated and energy storing long-lived reservoir states in small sodium molecule combustion processes and indicates the potential for providing new short wavelength visible and ultraviolet amplifiers for future laser-based chemical propulsion concepts. It has been assumed that the negative divergence of all stress tensors in common use yields the same force. This work finds that this is untrue, and, in fact, can vary wildly. We demonstrate this for the hydrogen atom, the one-particle isotropic harmonic oscillator, and a particle in an infinite spherical well where the exact density, pair-density, and the first order reduced density matrix are known for ground and excited states without any approximation. The Ehrenfest stress-tensor is introduced as any stress-tensor whose negative divergence will yield the corresponding Ehrenfest force for the same system when the exact wave-function is utilized. Stress-tensors within the literature are examined to show those that are Ehrenfest stress-tensors. Those that differ are demonstrated by how they differ within an exact formulation. Women have historically been underrepresented in positions of power within athletic administration. Stereotype threat, or the realization that there is a possibility that one is being judged as confirming or being reduced to a stereotype, can negatively impact the recruitment and retention of woman leaders in sport. This study developed and validated a new scale, the Gender Stereotype Threat in Athletic Administration, and elicited responses from high school athletic directors in two U.S. states. Using multiple analysis of variance, correlation analysis, and structure equation modeling, five hypotheses were tested and supported based on the respondents' feelings of group identification, belonging uncertainty, extra pressure to succeed, and group reputation threat. There is an ever increasing use of local density dependent potentials in the mesoscale modeling of complex fluids. Questions remain, though, about the dependence of the thermodynamic and structural properties of such systems on the cutoff distance used to calculate these local densities. These questions are particularly acute when it comes to the stability and structure of the vapor/liquid interface. In this article, we consider local density dependent potentials derived from an underlying van der Waals equation of state. We use simulation and density functional theory to examine how the bulk thermodynamic and interfacial properties vary with the cutoff distance, rc, used to calculate the local densities. We show quantitatively how the simulation results for bulk thermodynamic properties and vapor–liquid equilibrium approach the van der Waals limit as rc increases and demonstrate a scaling law for the radial distribution function in the large rc limit. We show that the vapor–liquid interface is stable with a well-defined surface tension and that the interfacial density profile is oscillatory, except for temperatures close to critical. Finally, we show that in the large rc limit, the interfacial tension is proportional to rc and, therefore, unlike the bulk thermodynamic properties, does not approach a constant value as rc increases. We believe that these results give new insights into the properties of local density dependent potentials, in particular their unusual interfacial behavior, which is relevant for modeling complex fluids in soft matter. We present a novel diagnostic system, based on the principle of capacitive sensing, capable of detecting the conduction zone of detonating explosives. The method relies on measuring the change in the capacitive coupling between a printed circuit and its surroundings, induced by an increase in local conductivity. A high frequency wave generator provides the driving signal, which is modified by the change in coupling. This method boasts greater sensitivity than existing conductivity-based techniques, with comparable spatial and temporal resolution. The subject material was pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) powder, pressed into low density (50%–85% theoretical maximum density) cylindrical columns. Previous attempts to measure the reaction zone of low density PETN have faced difficulties because of its short length and low conductivity compared to other explosives. The PETN was initiated using a laser flyer detonator in order to reach detonation promptly and with a minimum of electrical noise. Application of the capacitive sensor diagnostic and subsequent analysis yielded a density dependent steady-state reaction zone length of between 45 and 78 μ m. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite its simplicity and relatively low computational cost, second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) is well-known to overbind noncovalent interactions between polarizable monomers and some organometallic bonds. In such situations, the pairwise-additive correlation energy expression in MP2 is inadequate. Although energy-gap dependent amplitude regularization can substantially improve the accuracy of conventional MP2 in these regimes, the same regularization parameter worsens the accuracy for small molecule thermochemistry and density-dependent properties. Recently, we proposed a repartitioning of Brillouin-Wigner perturbation theory that is size-consistent to second order (BW-s2), and a free parameter (α) was set to recover the exact dissociation limit of H2 in a minimal basis set. Alternatively α can be viewed as a regularization parameter, where each value of α represents a valid variant of BW-s2, which we denote as BW-s2(α). In this work, we semi-empirically optimize α for noncovalent interactions, thermochemistry, alkane conformational energies, electronic response properties, and transition metal datasets, leading to improvements in accuracy relative to the ab initio parameterization of BW-s2 and MP2. We demonstrate that the optimal α parameter (α = 4) is more transferable across chemical problems than energy-gap-dependent regularization parameters. This is attributable to the fact that the BW-s2(α) regularization strength depends on all of the information encoded in the t amplitudes rather than just orbital energy differences. While the computational scaling of BW-s2(α) is iterative O ( N 5 ) , this effective and transferable approach to amplitude regularization is a promising route to incorporate higher-order correlation effects at second-order cost. The dihedral group of order 8, D 4 , realized as a subgroup of the group S 2 n of 2 n × 2 n blocked permutation matrices, acts via conjugation on the set of triangular patterns Δ. Patterns P and Q in Δ are D 4 -equivalent if there is a permutation Φ ∈ D 4 such that Φ P Φ T = Q. The objective of this paper is to examine the action of D 4 on Δ. The radius valley, i.e. a dearth of planets with radii between 1.5 and 2 Earth radii, provides insights into planetary formation and evolution. Using homogenously revised planetary parameters from Kepler 1-min short cadence light curves, we remodel transits of 72 small planets mostly orbiting low-mass stars, improving the precision and accuracy of planet parameters. By combining this sample with a similar sample of planets around higher mass stars, we determine the depth of the radius valley as a function of stellar mass. We find that the radius valley is shallower for low-mass stars compared to their higher mass counterparts. Upon comparison, we find that theoretical models of photoevaporation underpredict the number of planets observed inside the radius valley for low-mass stars: with decreasing stellar mass, the predicted fraction of planets inside the valley remains approximately constant whereas the observed fraction increases. We argue that this provides evidence for the presence of icy planets around low-mass stars. Alternatively, planets orbiting low-mass stars undergo more frequent collisions and scatter in the stars' high-energy output may also cause planets to fill the valley. We predict that more precise mass measurements for planets orbiting low-mass stars would be able to distinguish between these scenarios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the prevalence and severity of psychiatric disorders among sexual and gender diverse (SGD) young people was greater than in their heterosexual/cisgender peers. We systematically reviewed literature examining the prevalence, severity, and risk factors for psychiatric disorders among SGD young people aged 25 and under during the pandemic. Four databases (MEDLINE, PsycInfo, Scopus and Web of Science) were searched. Eligibility criteria were studies assessing prevalence rates, mean symptomology scores and risk factors of psychiatric disorders using contemporaneous screening measures or diagnosis. Thirteen studies of mixed quality were identified. Most studies indicated SGD young people were at high risk of experiencing several psychiatric disorders including depressive and generalised anxiety disorder compared to the general population. This group also experienced more severe symptomology of various psychiatric disorders compared to their heterosexual/cisgender peers. Risk factors included those specific to the pandemic along with factors that led to greater risk before the pandemic. This systematic review has indicated evidence of heightened risk of psychiatric disorders among SGD young people during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is important for clinicians to acknowledge the needs of SGD young people, working with them to co-develop more inclusive care as they deal with the pandemic's fallout. Using transcriptomic profiling combined with physiological and genetic dissection of nociceptor signalling, we identify angiotensin II as a putative mediator of nociception in colitis. Visceral pain is a leading cause of morbidity in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), contributing significantly to reduced quality of life. Currently available analgesics often lack efficacy or have intolerable side effects, driving the need for a more complete understanding of the mechanisms causing pain. Whole transcriptome gene expression analysis was performed by bulk RNA sequencing of colonic biopsies from patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) reporting abdominal pain and compared with noninflamed control biopsies. Potential pronociceptive mediators were identified based on gene upregulation in IBD biopsy tissue and cognate receptor expression in murine colonic sensory neurons. Pronociceptive activity of identified mediators was assessed in assays of sensory neuron and colonic afferent activity. RNA sequencing analysis highlighted a 7.6-fold increase in the expression of angiotensinogen transcripts, Agt , which encode the precursor to angiotensin II (Ang II), in samples from UC patients (P = 3.2 × 10−8). Consistent with the marked expression of the angiotensin AT1 receptor in colonic sensory neurons, Ang II elicited an increase in intracellular Ca2+ in capsaicin-sensitive, voltage-gated sodium channel subtype NaV1.8-positive sensory neurons. Ang II also evoked action potential discharge in high-threshold colonic nociceptors. These effects were inhibited by the AT1 receptor antagonist valsartan. Findings from our study identify AT1 receptor-mediated colonic nociceptor activation as a novel pathway of visceral nociception in patients with UC. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) binds to angiotensin‐converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) on host cells, via its spike protein, and transmembrane protease, serine 2 (TMPRSS2) cleaves the spike‐ACE2 complex to facilitate virus entry. As rate‐limiting steps for virus entry, modulation of ACE2 and/or TMPRSS2 may decrease SARS‐CoV‐2 infectivity and COVID‐19 severity. In silico modeling suggested the natural bioactive flavonoid quercetin can bind to ACE2 and a recent randomized clinical trial demonstrated that oral supplementation with quercetin increased COVID‐19 recovery. A range of cultured human cells were assessed for co‐expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2. Immortalized Calu‐3 lung cells, cultured and matured at an air–liquid interface (Calu‐3‐ALIs), were established as the most appropriate. Primary bronchial epithelial cells (PBECs) were obtained from healthy adult males (N = 6) and cultured under submerged conditions to corroborate the outcomes. Upon maturation or reaching 80% confluence, respectively, the Calu‐3‐ALIs and PBECs were treated with quercetin, and mRNA and protein expression were assessed by droplet digital PCR and ELISA, respectively. SARS‐CoV‐2 infectivity, and the effects of pre‐ and co‐treatment with quercetin, was assessed by median tissue culture infectious dose assay. Quercetin dose‐dependently decreased ACE2 and TMPRSS2 mRNA and protein in both Calu‐3‐ALIs and PBECs after 4 h, while TMPRSS2 remained suppressed in response to prolonged treatment with lower doses (twice daily for 3 days). Quercetin also acutely decreased ADAM17 mRNA, but not ACE, in Calu‐3‐ALIs, and this warrants further investigation. Calu‐3‐ALIs, but not PBECs, were successfully infected with SARS‐CoV‐2; however, quercetin had no antiviral effect, neither directly nor indirectly through downregulation of ACE2 and TMPRSS2. Calu‐3‐ALIs were reaffirmed to be an optimal cell model for research into the regulation of ACE2 and TMPRSS2, without the need for prior genetic modification, and will prove valuable in future coronavirus and respiratory infectious disease work. However, our data demonstrate that a significant decrease in the expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 by a promising prophylactic candidate may not translate to infection prevention. Amorphous solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) play a pivotal role as fundamental components within all‐solid‐state lithium batteries, yet their understanding lags behind that of crystalline materials. In this work, a novel amorphous SSE 5Li2S‐3SiS2 (mol %) with a high ionic conductivity of 1.2 mS cm−1 is first reported. The silicon and sulfur atoms in the edge‐sharing Si2S64− are less attracted to lithium compared to the SiS44− anion, which is expected to facilitate the lithium ions conduction in SSEs. More importantly, the relationship between the material properties and local structure in the amorphous thiosilicate SSEs is revealed, particularly highlighting the desirable edge‐sharing local structure. The Si2S64− presents better stability with Li metal. Background: Reports of technical success, adverse events, and long-term outcome of percutaneous cecostomy in children are limited. Objective: To characterize technical success, 30-day severe adverse events, and long-term outcome of percutaneous cecostomy at two centers. Materials and methods: A retrospective review of hospital course and long-term follow-up (through May 2022) of percutaneous cecostomy tubes placed May 1997 to August 2011 at two children's hospitals was used. Outcomes assessed included technical success (defined as successful tube placement into the colon allowing antegrade colonic enemas), length of stay, 30-day severe adverse events, surgery consults, surgical repair, VP shunt infection, ongoing flushes, tube removal, duration between maintenance tube exchanges, and deaths. Results: A total of 215 procedures were performed in 208 patients (90 institution A, 125 institution B). Tubes were placed for neurogenic bowel (72.1%, n = 155) and functional constipation (27.9%, n = 60). Technical success was 98.1% (211/215) and did not differ between centers (p = 0.74). Surgical repair was required for bowel leakage in 5.1% (11/215) and VP shunt infection was managed in 2.1% (2/95). Compared to functional constipation, patients with neurogenic bowel had higher % tube remaining (65.3% [96/147] versus 25.9% [15/58], p < 0.001) and higher ongoing flushes at follow-up (42.2% [62/147] versus 12.1% [7/58], p < 0.001). Tube removal for dissatisfaction occurred in 15.6% [32/205] and did not differ between groups (p = 0.98). Eight deaths due to co-morbidity occurred after a median of 7.4 years (IQR 9.3) of tube access. Conclusion: Percutaneous cecostomy is technically successful in the vast majority of patients and provided durable access in most. For cryo‐electron tomography (cryo‐ET) of beam‐sensitive biological specimens, a planar sample geometry is typically used. As the sample is tilted, the effective thickness of the sample along the direction of the electron beam increases and the signal‐to‐noise ratio concomitantly decreases, limiting the transfer of information at high tilt angles. In addition, the tilt range where data can be collected is limited by a combination of various sample‐environment constraints, including the limited space in the objective lens pole piece and the possible use of fixed conductive braids to cool the specimen. Consequently, most tilt series are limited to a maximum of ±70°, leading to the presence of a missing wedge in Fourier space. The acquisition of cryo‐ET data without a missing wedge, for example using a cylindrical sample geometry, is hence attractive for volumetric analysis of low‐symmetry structures such as organelles or vesicles, lysis events, pore formation or filaments for which the missing information cannot be compensated by averaging techniques. Irrespective of the geometry, electron‐beam damage to the specimen is an issue and the first images acquired will transfer more high‐resolution information than those acquired last. There is also an inherent trade‐off between higher sampling in Fourier space and avoiding beam damage to the sample. Finally, the necessity of using a sufficient electron fluence to align the tilt images means that this fluence needs to be fractionated across a small number of images; therefore, the order of data acquisition is also a factor to consider. Here, an n‐helix tilt scheme is described and simulated which uses overlapping and interleaved tilt series to maximize the use of a pillar geometry, allowing the entire pillar volume to be reconstructed as a single unit. Three related tilt schemes are also evaluated that extend the continuous and classic dose‐symmetric tilt schemes for cryo‐ET to pillar samples to enable the collection of isotropic information across all spatial frequencies. Pharmacists and physicians play key roles in antimicrobial stewardship. This commentary on a case describes these health professionals' need to collaborate to optimize therapeutic use of antimicrobials in clinical settings. Prescription preauthorization is one antimicrobial stewardship strategy that can meet with some physicians' frustration and generate conflict between pharmacists and prescribing physicians, particularly when pharmacists make alternative treatment recommendations. Objective: To describe the relationships between different methods of measuring functional fibrinogen levels in severely injured, bleeding trauma patients across multiple timepoints during hospitalisation. Methods: In 100 adult trauma patients enrolled in the FEISTY pilot randomised clinical trial at four tertiary trauma centres in Australia, blood samples were collected prospectively. Consistency of agreement was calculated, comparing functional fibrinogen levels measured by four methods – ROTEM® Delta and Sigma FIBTEM A5, TEG® 6s CFF MA, and gold‐standard Clauss Fibrinogen. Results: Comparing the ROTEM® Delta and new‐generation ROTEM® Sigma machine, consistency of agreement for FIBTEM A5, measured by calculating intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), was ≥0.73 across all analysed timepoints, with mean differences (Sigma minus Delta) of 0.10–3.57 mm. Corresponding values comparing the ROTEM® Sigma FIBTEM A5 and TEG® 6s CFF MA were ICC = 0.55–0.82 and ICC = 4.69–7.97 (CFF MA minus A5). Comparing ROTEM® Sigma FIBTEM A5 and Clauss Fibrinogen Analysis (CFA), among statistically significant simple linear regression models, R2 was 0.25–0.67, and comparing TEG® 6s CFF MA and CFA (CFA) 0.65–0.82, although not all differences were significant with the latter comparison. Relationships across all timepoints combined were Clauss Fibrinogen (CF) (g/L) = 0.21푥 + 0.004 (where 푥 = ROTEM® Sigma FIBTEM A5 in mm) and (g/L) = 0.16푥 − 0.06 (where 푥 = TEG® 6s CFF MA in mm). Conclusions: The present study revealed acceptable agreement between four different assays measuring functional fibrinogen, with current‐ and previous‐generation ROTEM® machines (Sigma, Delta) performing similarly measuring functional fibrinogen via FIBTEM assay. Warming temperatures are altering communities and trophic networks across Earth's ecosystems. While the overall influence of warming on food webs is often context‐dependent, increasing temperatures are predicted to change communities in two fundamental ways: (1) by reducing average body size and (2) by increasing individual metabolic rates. These warming‐induced changes have the potential to influence the distribution of food web fluxes, food web stability, and the relative importance of deterministic and stochastic ecological processes shaping community assembly. Here, we quantified patterns and the relative distribution of organic matter fluxes through stream food webs spanning a broad natural temperature gradient (5–27°C). We then related these patterns to species and community trait distributions of mean body size and population biomass turnover (P:B) within and across streams. We predicted that (1) communities in warmer streams would exhibit smaller body size and higher P:B and (2) organic matter fluxes within warmer communities would increasingly skew toward smaller, higher P:B populations. Across the temperature gradient, warmer communities were characterized by smaller body size (~9% per °C) and higher P:B (~7% faster turnover per °C) populations on average. Additionally, organic matter fluxes within warmer streams were increasingly skewed toward higher P:B populations, demonstrating that warming can restructure organic matter fluxes in both an absolute and relative sense. With warming, the relative distribution of organic matter fluxes was decreasingly likely to arise through the random sorting of species, suggesting stronger selection for traits driving high turnover with increasing temperature. Our study suggests that a warming world will favor energy fluxes through "smaller and faster" populations, and that these changes may be more predictable than previously thought. Describing the microbial community within the tumour has been a key aspect in understanding the pathophysiology of the tumour microenvironment. In head and neck cancer (HNC), most studies on tissue samples have only performed 16S rRNA short-read sequencing (SRS) on V3-V5 region. SRS is mostly limited to genus level identification. In this study, we compared full-length 16S rRNA long-read sequencing (FL-ONT) from Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT) to V3-V4 Illumina SRS (V3V4-Illumina) in 26 HNC tumour tissues. Further validation was also performed using culture-based methods in 16 bacterial isolates obtained from 4 patients using MALDI-TOF MS. We observed similar alpha diversity indexes between FL-ONT and V3V4-Illumina. However, beta-diversity was significantly different between techniques (PERMANOVA - R2 = 0.131, p < 0.0001). At higher taxonomic levels (Phylum to Family), all metrics were more similar among sequencing techniques, while lower taxonomy displayed more discrepancies. At higher taxonomic levels, correlation in relative abundance from FL-ONT and V3V4-Illumina were higher, while this correlation decreased at lower levels. Finally, FL-ONT was able to identify more isolates at the species level that were identified using MALDI-TOF MS (75% vs. 18.8%). Azetidines are valuable nitrogenous heterocycles. Herein, we disclose a strategy for the modular assembly of 3‐azetidines and related spirocyclic congeners featuring all‐carbon quaternary centers. This approach leverages titanacyclobutanes generated from ketones or alkenes. Halogenation of these organotitanium species gives rise to functionalized alkyl dihalides that can be subsequently captured by amines to afford azetidine building blocks. This strategy facilitated the synthesis of a small molecule anti‐tuberculosis drug. It also enabled access to carbon‐13 isotopologs of diazaspiro[3.3]heptane fragments that are challenging to prepare by any other means. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Persistent pain is a common yet debilitating complication after breast cancer surgery. Given the pervasive effects of this pain disorder on the patient and healthcare system, post-mastectomy pain syndrome (PMPS) is becoming a larger population health problem, especially as the prognosis and survivorship of breast cancer increases. Interventions that prevent persistent pain after breast surgery are needed to improve the quality of life of breast cancer survivors. An intraoperative intravenous lidocaine infusion has emerged as a potential intervention to decrease the incidence of PMPS. We aim to determine the definitive effects of this intervention in patients undergoing breast cancer surgery. Methods: PLAN will be a multicenter, parallel-group, blinded, 1:1 randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 1,602 patients undergoing breast cancer surgery. Adult patients scheduled for a lumpectomy or mastectomy will be randomized to receive an intravenous 2% lidocaine bolus of 1.5 mg/kg with induction of anesthesia, followed by a 2.0 mg/kg/h infusion until the end of surgery, or placebo solution (normal saline) at the same volume. The primary outcome will be the incidence of persistent pain at 3 months. Secondary outcomes include the incidence of pain and opioid consumption at 1 h, 1–3 days, and 12 months after surgery, as well as emotional, physical, and functional parameters, and cost-effectiveness. Discussion: This trial aims to provide definitive evidence on an intervention that could potentially prevent persistent pain after breast cancer surgery. If this trial is successful, lidocaine infusion would be integrated as standard of care in breast cancer management. This inexpensive, widely available, and easily administered intervention has the potential to reduce pain and suffering in an already afflicted patient population, decrease the substantial costs of chronic pain management, potentially decrease opioid use, and improve the quality of life in patients. This study investigates the sensitivity of the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) to changes to the bulk flux parameterization and the role of ocean surface waves in air–sea coupling using a fully coupled ocean–atmosphere–wave model. The atmospheric and ocean model components of the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) are coupled to a spectral wave model, WAVEWATCH III (WW3). Two experiments with wind speed–dependent bulk algorithms (NCAR and COARE3.0a) and one experiment with wave-state-dependent flux (COR3.0a-WAV) were conducted. We modify COARE3.0a to include surface roughness calculated within WW3 and also account for the buffering effect of waves on the relative difference between air-side and ocean-side momentum flux. Differences in surface fluxes, primarily caused by discrepancies in drag coefficients, result in significant differences in MJO's properties. While COARE3.0a has better convection–circulation coupling than NCAR, it exhibits anomalous MJO convection east of the date line. The wave-state-dependent flux (COR3.0-WAV) improves the MJO representation over the default COARE3.0 algorithm. Strong easterlies over the Pacific Ocean in COARE3.0a enhance the latent heat flux (LHFLX). This is responsible for the anomalous MJO propagation after the date line. In COR3.0a-WAV, waves reduce the anomalous easterlies, leading to a decrease in LHFLX and MJO dissipation after the date line. These findings highlight the role of surface fluxes in MJO simulation fidelity. Background: The Brief Educational Workshops in Secondary Schools Trial (BESST) is an England-wide school-based cluster randomised controlled trial assessing the clinical and cost-effectiveness of an open-access psychological workshop programme (DISCOVER) for 16–18-year-olds. This baseline paper describes the self-referral and other recruitment processes used in this study and the baseline characteristics of the enrolled schools and participants. Method: We enrolled 900 participants from 57 Secondary schools across England from 4th October 2021 to 10th November 2022. Schools were randomised to receive either the DISCOVER day-long Stress workshop or treatment as usual which included signposting information. Participants will be followed up for 6 months with outcome data collection at baseline, 3-month, and 6-month post randomisation. Results: Schools were recruited from a geographically and ethnically diverse sample across England. To reduce stigma, students were invited to self-refer into the study if they wanted help for stress. Their mean age was 17.2 (SD = 0.6), 641 (71%) were female and 411 (45.6%) were from ethnic minority groups. The general wellbeing of our sample measured using the Mood and Feelings Questionnaire (MFQ) found 314 (35%) of students exhibited symptoms of depression at baseline. Eighty percent of students reported low wellbeing on the Warwick Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS) suggesting that although the overall sample mean is below the cut-off for depression, the self-referral approach used in this study supports distressed students in coming forward. Conclusion: The BESST study will continue to follow up participants to collect outcome data and results will be analysed once all the data have been collected. Introduction: A key element of advance care planning (ACP) is the goals of care (GOC) conversation between the provider and the patient. The value of meaningful GOC conversations for the patient, provider, and health care institution is well documented. However, if the GOC documentation is buried in the medical record, not well defined, or poorly documented, that value is squandered. The Improvement Process: Interventions were implemented with oncology physicians and nurse practitioners (NPs). These included education, system reform including improving the ease and consistency of documentation of ACP, and regular feedback. Results: Participants reported increased confidence in communication skills about GOC conversations postworkshops. Data results for the tracked metrics, health care power of attorney, code status, and GOC, all showed improvement. Conclusion: Physicians and NPs recognized the importance of GOC conversations as part of ACP. Considerable progress was made by focusing on GOC conversations, maximizing information technology, participating in coaching, and ongoing data monitoring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an Artificial Intelligence‐Large Language Model (AI‐LLM) at improving the readability of knee radiology reports. Methods: Reports of 100 knee X‐rays, 100 knee computed tomography (CT) scans and 100 knee magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were retrieved. The following prompt command was inserted into the AI‐LLM: 'Explain this radiology report to a patient in layman's terms in the second person:[Report Text]'. The Flesch–Kincaid reading level (FKRL) score, Flesch reading ease (FRE) score and report length were calculated for the original radiology report and the AI‐LLM generated report. Any 'hallucination' or inaccurate text produced by the AI‐LLM‐generated report was documented. Results: Statistically significant improvements in mean FKRL scores in the AI‐LLM generated X‐ray report (12.7 ± 1.0–7.2 ± 0.6), CT report (13.4 ± 1.0–7.5 ± 0.5) and MRI report (13.5 ± 0.9–7.5 ± 0.6) were observed. Statistically significant improvements in mean FRE scores in the AI‐LLM generated X‐ray report (39.5 ± 7.5–76.8 ± 5.1), CT report (27.3 ± 5.9–73.1 ± 5.6) and MRI report (26.8 ± 6.4–73.4 ± 5.0) were observed. Superior FKRL scores and FRE scores were observed in the AI‐LLM‐generated X‐ray report compared to the AI‐LLM‐generated CT report and MRI report, p < 0.001. The hallucination rates in the AI‐LLM generated X‐ray report, CT report and MRI report were 2%, 5% and 5%, respectively. Conclusions: This study highlights the promising use of AI‐LLMs as an innovative, patient‐centred strategy to improve the readability of knee radiology reports. The clinical relevance of this study is that an AI‐LLM‐generated knee radiology report may enhance patients' understanding of their imaging reports, potentially reducing the responder burden placed on the ordering physicians. However, due to the 'hallucinations' produced by the AI‐LLM‐generated report, the ordering physician must always engage in a collaborative discussion with the patient regarding both reports and the corresponding images. Baseline information about declining North American shorebird populations is essential to determine the effects of global warming at low-lying coastal areas of the Arctic and subarctic, where numerous taxa breed, and to assess population recovery throughout their range. We estimated population sizes on the Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) in western Alaska on the eastern edge of the Bering Sea. We conducted ground-based surveys during 2015 and 2016 at 589 randomly selected plots from an area of 35,769 km2. We used stratified random sampling in 8 physiographic strata and corrected population estimates using detection ratios derived from double sampling on a subset of plots. We detected 11,110 breeding individuals of 21 taxa. Western Sandpiper (Calidris mauri), Red-necked Phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus), Dunlin (subspecies C. alpina pacifica), and Wilson's Snipe (Gallinago delicata) were the most abundant taxa. We estimated that ~7 million individual shorebirds were breeding on the entire YKD in 2015 and 2016. Our surveys of this region provided robust population estimates (coefficient of variations ≤ 0.35) for 14 species. Our results indicate that the YKD supports a large proportion of North America's breeding populations of the Pacific Golden-Plover (Pluvialis fulva), the western population of a Whimbrel subspecies (Numenius phaeopus hudsonicus), a Bar-tailed Godwit subspecies (Limosa lapponica baueri), Black Turnstone (Arenaria melanocephala), a Dunlin subspecies (C. alpina pacifica), and Western Sandpiper. Our study highlights the importance of breeding shorebirds of this relatively pristine but climatically sensitive deltaic system. Estuaries and deltaic systems worldwide are rapidly being degraded by anthropogenic activities. Our population estimates can be used to refine prior North American population estimates, determine the effects of global warming, and evaluate conservation success by measuring population change over time. Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine head acceleration event (HAE) propensity and incidence during elite-level men's and women's rugby union matches. Methods: Instrumented mouthguards (iMGs) were fitted in 92 male and 72 female players from nine elite-level clubs and three international teams. Data were collected during 406 player matches (239 male, 167 female) using iMGs and video analysis. Incidence was calculated as the number of HAEs per player hour and propensity as the proportion of contact events resulting in an HAE at a range of linear and angular thresholds. Results: HAE incidence above 10 g was 22.7 and 13.2 per hour in men's forwards and backs and 11.8 and 7.2 per hour in women's forwards and backs, respectively. Propensity varied by contact event, with 35.6% and 35.4% of men's tackles and carries and 23.1% and 19.6% of women's tackles and carries producing HAEs above 1.0 krad/s2. Tackles produced significantly more HAEs than carries, and incidence was greater in forwards compared with backs for both sexes and in men compared with women. Women's forwards were 1.6 times more likely to experience a medium-magnitude HAE from a carry than women's backs. Propensity was similar from tackles and carries, and between positional groups, while significantly higher in men than women. The initial collision stage of the tackle had a higher propensity than other stages. Conclusion: This study quantifies HAE exposures in elite rugby union players using iMGs. Most contact events in rugby union resulted in lower-magnitude HAEs, while higher-magnitude HAEs were comparatively rare. An HAE above 40 g occurred once every 60–100 min in men and 200–300 min in women. Future research on mechanisms for HAEs may inform strategies aimed at reducing HAEs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Robust methods to predict heat transfer are vital to accurately control the blade-tip clearance in compressors and the radial growth of the disks to which these blades are attached. Fundamentally, the flow in the cavity between the co-rotating disks is a conjugate problem: the temperature gradient across this cavity drives large-scale buoyant structures in the core that rotate asynchronously to the disks, which in turn governs the heat transfer and temperature distributions in the disks. The practical engine designer requires expedient computational methods and low-order modeling. A conjugate heat transfer (CHT) methodology that can be used as a predictive tool is introduced here. Most simulations for rotating cavities only consider the fluid domain in isolation and typically require known disk temperature distributions as the boundary condition for the solution. This paper presents a novel coupling strategy for the conjugate problem, where unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) simulations for the fluid are combined with a series of steady simulations for the solid domain in an iterative approach. This strategy overcomes the limitations due to the difference in thermal inertia between fluid and solid; the method retains the unsteady flow features but allows a prediction of the disk temperature distributions, rather than using them as a boundary condition. This approach has been validated on the fundamental flow configuration of a closed co-rotating cavity. Wastewater treatment plants release complex mixtures of chemicals into the aquatic environment as wastewater effluent (WWE); however, the effects of these mixtures are still poorly understood. Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) are a culturally important species in the Pacific Northwest and are a vital food resource for southern resident killer whales (Orcinus orca) that are listed as 'critically endangered' under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA). Chinook populations have declined drastically in this region and have failed to show significant recovery despite regional-to-federal efforts, resulting in many populations being listed as threatened under the ESA. One source of stress to juvenile Chinook is chemical pollution from WWE during their outmigration along river corridors and residency in estuaries. In this study, we investigated effects of WWE on juvenile Chinook health in a ten-day exposure to dilutions of WWE from 0.1% to 20%. At the end of the exposure, we measured endpoints associated with endocrine disruption, brain function, osmoregulation, stress, and metabolism. Exposure to WWE significantly (a = 0.1 for all analyses) induced vitellogenesis, indicating endocrine system disruption. We saw significant reductions in plasma glucose, an indication of stress, and brain Na+/K+-ATPase (NKA) activity, an enzyme essential for neuronal signaling. Lastly, metabolism was affected as evidenced by altered total protein, cholesterol, and albumin in plasma, a drastic decrease in whole body lipid content, and a significant increase in visible liver anomalies. We compared contaminant concentrations in exposure water with effects concentrations from the literature for chemicals known to induce vitellogenin or inhibit brain NKA. For most contaminants, concentrations in exposure waters were several orders of magnitude below effects concentrations in the literature. The exception was estrogenic hormones, which were detected at similar concentrations in this study compared to concentrations in other studies that induced vitellogenin. Based on comparisons to the literature, contaminants measured in this study could not explain the inhibition of brain NKA; however, WWE mixtures contain many quantified and undetected compounds that are likely acting together to cause harmful effects in Chinook. Targeted metabolomic analysis was conducted on juvenile Chinook salmon exposed for 10 days to wastewater effluent (WWE) from a large urban treatment plant. Exposures included five dilutions of WWE (20%, 5.3%, 1.4%, 0.4%, and 0.1%) and a control with 7 replicates per treatment. Liver was extracted from fish and analyzed via liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry (LC-MS) for 361 endogenous metabolites, of which 185 were detected. Control-versus-treatment comparisons identified several metabolites that were associated with altered biochemical pathways observed for all treatments, including several that are important for energy generation and utilization. These altered pathways are crucial for fish health and may be an early indicator of potential adverse effects on growth, reproduction, behavior, and immune function. Juvenile ocean-type Chinook salmon spend several days to weeks in the nearshore estuary where they may encounter high concentrations of WWE contaminants. They are exposed to a wide range of potent pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and industrial compounds from WWE that have the potential to affect physiological homeostasis and disrupt their normal life cycle. Using critical race theory (CRT) as both our theory and analytical framework, we interrogated vocational, career, and technical education (VCTE) policy as a racial instrument. We applied key CRT themes to examine both primary sources; including historical and contemporary VCTE Acts (e.g., Perkins I-V) and Congressional reports; and secondary sources, including academic analyses of VCTE, its history, and related legislation. Findings demonstrate that VCTE policy upholds race-neutrality, which we argue is problematic because without being designated a special population, racially oppressed students stand to miss out on important funding opportunities that could dramatically alter and improve their lives. ScanNav TM Anatomy Peripheral Nerve Block (ScanNav™) is an artificial intelligence (AI)-based device that produces a colour overlay on real-time B-mode ultrasound to highlight key anatomical structures for regional anaesthesia. This study compares consistency of identification of sono-anatomical structures between expert ultrasonographers and ScanNav™. Nineteen experts in ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia (UGRA) annotated 100 structures in 30 ultrasound videos across six anatomical regions. These annotations were compared with each other to produce a quantitative assessment of the level of agreement amongst human experts. The AI colour overlay was then compared with all expert annotations. Differences in human–human and human–AI agreement are presented for each structure class (artery, muscle, nerve, fascia/serosal plane) and structure. Clinical context is provided through subjective assessment data from UGRA experts. For human–human and human–AI annotations, agreement was highest for arteries (mean Dice score 0.88/0.86), then muscles (0.80/0.77), and lowest for nerves (0.48/0.41). Wide discrepancy exists in consistency for different structures, both with human–human and human–AI comparisons; highest for sartorius muscle (0.91/0.92) and lowest for the radial nerve (0.21/0.27). Human experts and the AI system both showed the same pattern of agreement in sono-anatomical structure identification. The clinical significance of the differences presented must be explored; however the perception that human expert opinion is uniform must be challenged. Elements of this assessment framework could be used for other devices to allow consistent evaluations that inform clinical training and practice.
