1. A Critical Discussion of the Work-Life Experiences of Scholar Practitioners

Abstract

The ability to understand how our work-life experiences impact our pursuits as emerging scholars, parents, and individuals is critical to our successful performance in each role. We explore the intricacies of our work-life systems using collaborative autoethnography, a technique in which several autobiographical ethnographies are analyzed in a group. We use a critical lens to better understand our experiences as a consequence of socially acceptable norms and challenges to the status quo. It is our hope that by better understanding and discussing our work-life experiences as emerging scholars, others balancing these multiple identities will also find useful lessons. Self-reflection questions grounded in our findings and a free-write prompt from our initial data collection are shared as a starting point for others to begin their own autoethnographies.

11. The microstructural modelling of austempered ductile iron camshafts

Abstract

Austempered ductile iron (AD!) is a material which is receiving increasing interest from the manufacturers of automotive components such as camshafts due to its superior mechanical properties, and in particular excellent wear resistance, compared with other grades of cast iron. ADI is produced from a spheroidal graphite casting using a two-stage heattreatment process. During the first stage of the heat-treatment the matrix is transformed to austenite, and then in the second austempering stage, some of the austenite is transformed to bainitic ferrite. The final microstructure is therefore complex, consisting of graphite, bainitic ferrite, austenite, carbides and possibly martensite. The major focus of this work has been to develop a novel method of predicting the effect of composition and heat-treatment parameters on the major constituents of the microstructure. This has resulted in a single model which can predict a 'microstructural map' of ADI and will assist the foundry industry in reducing lead times for component manufacture. The high temperature equilibrium between graphite and austenite was investigated using Gibbs free energy minimisation in conjunction with critically assessed thermodynamic data. Having established the carbon concentration in austenite at the start of the austempering process, the volume fraction of bainitic ferrite was established from prediction of the limiting carbon content for the diffusionless transformation. The kinetics of the bainite transformation were determined by making modifications to a model which was originally developed for low alloy steels. The predictions were compared with experimental data obtained, both during the course of this research and available in the literature, using dilatometric and X-ray diffraction techniques. The kinetics of the austenitisation were investigated through consideration of a diffusion couple between graphite and austenite. The degree of segregation and formation of primary carbides, in the original ductile iron casting, was calculated using a Scheil approach to solidification. The effect of this segregation was subsequently accounted for by making microstructural predictions on a number of individual 'shells' of material between two graphite nodules. Finally, complete microstructure predictions were compared with reported mechanical properties for a range of compositions and heat treatments of austempered ductile irons.

18. Use of Video Directly Observed Therapy and Characteristics Associated With Use Among Patients Treated With Buprenorphine in an Office-based Setting.

Abstract

Objectives: Video directly observed therapy (video DOT) is a tool for confirming buprenorphine adherence that could complement the use of urine toxicology; research is needed to characterize the patients who are receptive and able to use this technology. We aimed to describe video DOT utilization and assess participant characteristics associated with use. Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of data from a pilot randomized controlled trial of adults who recently initiated sublingual buprenorphine in office-based programs, restricting to intervention arm participants, which consisted of 12 weeks of video DOT via a mobile health technology platform. Participants were instructed to record at least 1 daily video of buprenorphine self-administration. Poisson regression models with robust standard errors were used to measure associations between participant characteristics and frequency of submitted videos. Results: The sample included 39 participants. Of 3276 possible videos, 1002 (31%) were submitted. Age ≥40 years (relative risk [RR], 2.54 [95% confidence interval {CI}, 1.31–4.91]) and once-daily buprenorphine dosing (RR, 3.10 [95% CI, 1.76–5.48]) were positively associated with video submissions. Non-White race (RR, 0.43 [95% CI, 0.19–0.97]), less than high school education (RR, 0.27 [95% CI, 0.10–0.74]), history of previous buprenorphine treatment (RR, 0.50 [95% CI, 0.25–0.97]), and ≥3 previous treatment attempts (RR, 0.16 [95% CI, 0.07–0.37]) were negatively associated. Conclusions: Video DOT utilization resulted in about a third of expected videos, although there were differences in use according to age, race, buprenorphine treatment factors, and educational status. Such differences underscore that mobile-health interventions such as video DOT may not be equally used by all patients. 25. Interest in prescribing buprenorphine among resident and attending physicians at an urban teaching clinic

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Opioid use disorders are a major medical and public health concern. Buprenorphine is approved for the treatment of opioid use disorders; however, a shortage of physicians prescribing buprenorphine is a significant barrier to treatment access. The aims of this study were to evaluate opinions of internal medicine attending and resident physicians about buprenorphine and assess interest in becoming waivered to prescribe. Methods: Internal medicine resident and attending physicians at a primary care clinic in a large academic hospital were invited to complete surveys. The study sample was composed of physicians who were not waivered to prescribe buprenorphine. Survey data included demographic information, level of training, buprenorphine waiver status, interest in becoming waivered to prescribe buprenorphine, and beliefs about buprenorphine for treatment of opioid use disorders. High interest in becoming waivered was defined as a Likert response >3 (1 = No interest, 5 = Very interested). Results: Of the 44 physician respondents, 39 were not waivered to prescribe buprenorphine and constituted the sample; of those, 27 were residents and 12 were attending physicians. Twenty-six of the 39 nonwaivered respondents (66.7%) had high interest in becoming waivered. Those with high interest in becoming waivered were significantly more likely to be younger (P= .007) and to strongly believe in buprenorphine effectiveness (P= .023). Discussion: Most physicians in this academic training program showed high interest in prescribing buprenorphine, and belief in buprenorphine effectiveness was associated with high interest in becoming waivered.

Abstract

This study looks at some effects of five different styles of women's clothing: Formal Skirt, Formal Pants, Casual Skirt, Casual Pants, and Jeans. There were no significant differences in compliance to a request to fill out a questionnaire made by experimenters dressed in the five clothing styles, although experimenter age and sex effects were found. Ratings of photographs of the five dress styles indicate that a model was viewed by both male and female subjects as most happy, successful, feminine, interesting, attractive, intelligent, and wanted as a friend when wearing a Formal Skirt outfit and as least so when wearing Jeans. She was also seen as more active when wearing pants as compared with a skirt. Subjects' reasons for choosing what clothing to wear did not indicate that how one will appear to others is the major factor in clothing selection. It appears that clothing does communicate something about the wearer but may influence behavior toward her primarily in the absence of other information about her status. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
