Search

A complete census of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is a prerequisite for understanding the growth of supermassive black holes across cosmic time. A significant challenge toward this goal is the whereabouts of heavily obscured AGN that remain uncertain. This paper sets new constraints on the demographics of this population by developing a methodology that combines X-ray spectral information with priors derived from multiwavelength observations. We select X-ray AGN in the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey and fit their $2.2-500\mu m$ spectral energy distributions with galaxy and AGN templates to determine the mid-infrared ($6\mu m$) luminosity of the AGN component. Empirical correlations between X-ray and $6\mu m$ luminosities are then adopted to infer the intrinsic accretion luminosity at X-rays for individual AGN. This is used as prior information in our Bayesian X-ray spectral analysis to estimate physical properties, such as line-of-sight obscuration. Our approach breaks the degeneracies between accretion luminosity and obscuration that affect X-ray spectral analysis, particularly for the most heavily obscured (Compton-Thick) AGN with low photon counts X-ray spectra. The authors wish to thank J.M. Torrejón for the organization of the Athena-multi-messenger Workshops, held on November 27 - 29, 2018, in Alicante, Spain and on 5 May 2020 - 6 May 2020 in videoconference., In this paper we explore the scientific synergies between Athena and some of the key multi-messenger facilities that should be operative concurrently with Athena. These facilities include LIGO A+, Advanced Virgo+ and future detectors for ground-based observation of gravitational waves (GW), LISA for space-based observations of GW, IceCube and KM3NeT for neutrino observations, and CTA for very high energy observations. These science themes encompass pressing issues in astrophysics, cosmology and fundamental physics such as: the central engine and jet physics in compact binary mergers, accretion processes and jet physics in Super-Massive Binary Black Holes (SMBBHs) and in compact stellar binaries, the equation of state of neutron stars, cosmic accelerators and the origin of Cosmic Rays (CRs), the origin of intermediate and high-Z elements in the Universe, the Cosmic distance scale and tests of General Relativity and the Standard Model. Observational strategies for implementing the identified science topics are also discussed. A significant part of the sources targeted by multi-messenger facilities is of transient nature. We have thus also discussed the synergy of Athena with wide-field high-energy facilities, taking THESEUS as a case study for transient discovery. Using recent empirical constraints on the dark matter halo--galaxy--supermassive black hole (SMBH) connection from $z=0-7$, we infer how undermassive, typical, and overmassive SMBHs contribute to the quasar luminosity function (QLF) at $z=6$. We find that beyond $L_\mathrm{bol} = 5 \times 10^{46}$ erg/s, the $z=6$ QLF is dominated by SMBHs that are at least 0.3 dex above the $z=6$ median $M_\bullet-M_*$ relation. The QLF is dominated by typical SMBHs (i.e., within $\pm 0.3$ dex around the $M_\bullet-M_*$ relation) at $L_\mathrm{bol} \lesssim 10^{45}$ erg/s. At $z\sim 6$, the intrinsic $M_\bullet-M_*$ relation for all SMBHs is slightly steeper than the $z=0$ scaling, with a similar normalization at $M_* \sim 10^{11} M_\odot$. We also predict the $M_\bullet-M_*$ relation for $z=6$ bright quasars selected by different bolometric luminosity thresholds, finding very good agreement with observations. For quasars with $L_\mathrm{bol} > 3 \times 10^{46}$ ($10^{48}$) erg/s, the scaling relation is shifted upwards by $\sim0.35$ (1.0) dex for $10^{11} M_\odot$ galaxies. To accurately measure the intrinsic $M_\bullet-M_*$ relation, it is essential to include fainter quasars with $L_\mathrm{bol} \lesssim 10^{45}$ erg/s. We present the Extragalactic Serendipitous Swift Survey (ExSeSS), providing a new well-defined sample constructed from the observations performed using the Swift X-ray Telescope. The ExSeSS sample consists of 79,342 sources detected in the medium (1-2 keV), hard (2-10 keV) or total (0.3-10 keV) energy bands, covering 2086.6 deg$^{2}$ of sky across a flux range of $f_\mathrm{0.3-10keV}\sim10^{-15}-10^{-10}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. Using the new ExSeSS sample we present measurements of the differential number counts of X-ray sources as a function of 2-10 keV flux that trace the population of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in a previously unexplored regime. We find that taking the line-of-sight absorption column density into account has an effect on the differential number count measurements and is vital to obtain agreement with previous results. In the hard band, we obtain a good agreement between the ExSeSS measurements and previous, higher energy data from NuSTAR and Swift/BAT when taking into account the varying column density of the ExSeSS sample as well as the X-ray spectral parameters of each of the samples we are comparing to. We also find discrepancies between the ExSeSS measurements and AGN population synthesis models, indicating a change in the properties of the AGN population over this flux range that is not fully described by current models at these energies, hinting at a larger, moderately obscured population at low redshifts ($z\lesssim0.2$) that the models are not currently taking into account., 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS. We present a detailed study of a galaxy merger taking place at $z=1.89$ in the GOODS-S field. Here we analyze Keck/MOSFIRE spectroscopic observations from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey along with multi-wavelength photometry assembled by the 3D-HST survey. The combined dataset is modeled to infer the past star-formation histories (SFHs) of both merging galaxies. They are found to be massive, with log$_{10}(M_{\ast}/M_{\odot}) > 11$, with a close mass ratio satisfying the typical major-merger definition. We aim at characterizing the hot phase of the Circum-Galactic Medium in a large sample of galaxies. We stack X-ray events from the SRG/eROSITA eFEDS survey around central galaxies in the GAMA 9hr field to construct radially projected soft X-ray luminosity profiles as a function of their stellar mass and specific star formation rate. We consider samples of quiescent (star-forming) galaxies in the stellar mass range $2\times 10^{10}$ -- $10^{12}$ M$_\odot$ ($3\times 10^9$ -- $6\times10^{11}$ M$_\odot$). For quiescent galaxies, the X-ray profiles are clearly extended throughout the available mass range; however, the measured profile is likely biased high due to projection effects, as these galaxies tend to live in dense and hot environments. For the most massive star forming samples ($\geq10^{11}$ M$_\odot$), there is a hint of detection of extended emission. For star-forming galaxies with $< 10^{11}$ M$_\odot$ the X-ray stacked profiles are compatible with unresolved sources and consistent with the expected emission from faint Active Galactic Nuclei and X-ray binaries. We measure for the first time the mean relation between average X-ray luminosity and stellar mass separately for quiescent and star-forming galaxies. High-mass ($\geq 10^{11}$ M$_\odot$) star-forming or quiescent galaxies follow the expected scaling of virialized hot haloes, while lower mass star-forming galaxies show a less prominent luminosity and a weaker dependence on stellar mass, consistent with empirical models of the weak AGN population. When comparing our results with state-of-the art numerical simulations, we find an overall consistency on large ($>80$ kpc) scales at masses $\geq 10^{11}$ M$_\odot$, but disagreement on the small scales, where brighter than observed compact cores are predicted. In large-scale hydrodynamical cosmological simulations, the fate of massive galaxies is mainly dictated by the modeling of feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN). The amount of energy released by AGN feedback is proportional to the mass that has been accreted onto the BHs, but the exact sub-grid modeling of AGN feedback differs in all simulations. In this work we present a robust quantification of X-ray selected AGN in local ($z \leq 0.25$) dwarf galaxies ($M_\mathrm{*} \leq 3 \times 10^9 \mathrm{M_\odot}$). We define a parent sample of 4,331 dwarf galaxies found within the footprint of both the MPA-JHU galaxy catalogue (based on SDSS DR8) and 3XMM DR7, performed a careful review of the data to remove misidentifications and produced a sample of 61 dwarf galaxies that exhibit nuclear X-ray activity indicative of an AGN. We examine the optical emission line ratios of our X-ray selected sample and find that optical AGN diagnostics fail to identify 85% of the sources. We then calculated the growth rates of the black holes powering our AGN in terms of their specific accretion rates ($\propto L_\mathrm{X}/M_\mathrm{*}$, an approximate tracer of the Eddington ratio). Within our observed sample, we found a wide range of specific accretion rates. After correcting the observed sample for the varying sensitivity of 3XMM, we found further evidence for a wide range of X-ray luminosities and specific accretion rates, described by a power law. Using this corrected AGN sample we also define an AGN fraction describing their relative incidence within the parent sample. We found the AGN fraction increases with host galaxy mass (up to $\approx$ 6%) for galaxies with X-ray luminosities between $10^{39} \mathrm{erg/s}$ and $10^{42} \mathrm{erg/s}$, and by extrapolating the power law to higher luminosities, we found evidence to suggest the fraction of luminous AGN ($L_\mathrm{X} \geq 10^{42.4} \mathrm{erg/s}$) is constant out to $z \approx 0.7$., 19 pages, 12 figures, 1 table. It is widely reported, based on clustering measurements of observed active galactic nuclei (AGN) samples, that AGN reside in similar mass host dark matter halos across the bulk of cosmic time, with log $M/M_\odot$~12.5-13.0 to z~2.5. We show that this is due in part to the AGN fraction in galaxies rising with increasing stellar mass, combined with AGN observational selection effects that exacerbate this trend. Here, we use AGN specific accretion rate distribution functions determined as a function of stellar mass and redshift for star-forming and quiescent galaxies separately, combined with the latest galaxy-halo connection models, to determine the parent and sub-halo mass distribution function of AGN to various observational limits. We find that while the median (sub-)halo mass of AGN, $\approx10^{12}M_\odot$, is fairly constant with luminosity, specific accretion rate, and redshift, the full halo mass distribution function is broad, spanning several orders of magnitude. We show that widely used methods to infer a typical dark matter halo mass based on an observed AGN clustering amplitude can result in biased, systematically high host halo masses. While the AGN satellite fraction rises with increasing parent halo mass, we find that the central galaxy is often not an AGN. Our results elucidate the physical causes for the apparent uniformity of AGN host halos across cosmic time and underscore the importance of accounting for AGN selection biases when interpreting observational AGN clustering results. We map the co-eval growth of galaxies and their central supermassive black holes in detail by measuring the incidence of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in galaxies as a function of star formation rate (SFR) and redshift (to z~4). We combine large galaxy samples with deep Chandra X-ray imaging to measure the probability distribution of specific black hole accretion rates (LX relative to stellar mass) and derive robust AGN fractions and average specific accretion rates. First, we consider galaxies along the main sequence of star formation. We find a linear correlation between the average SFR and both the AGN fraction and average specific accretion rate across a wide range in stellar mass ($M_* \sim 10^{8.5-11.5}M_\odot$) and to at least z~2.5, indicating that AGN in main-sequence galaxies are driven by the stochastic accretion of cold gas. We also consider quiescent galaxies and find significantly higher AGN fractions than predicted, given their low SFRs, indicating that AGN in quiescent galaxies are fuelled by additional mechanisms (e.g. stellar winds). Next, we bin galaxies according to their SFRs relative to the main sequence. We find that the AGN fraction is significantly elevated for galaxies that are still star-forming but with SFRs below the main sequence, indicating further triggering mechanisms enhance AGN activity within these sub-main-sequence galaxies. We also find that the incidence of high-accretion-rate AGN is enhanced in starburst galaxies and evolves more mildly with redshift than within the rest of the galaxy population, suggesting mergers play a role in driving AGN activity in such high-SFR galaxies., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures. We investigate the mean star formation rates (SFRs) in the host galaxies of ~3000 optically selected QSOs from the SDSS survey within the Herschel-ATLAS fields, and a radio-luminous sub-sample, covering the redshift range of z = 0.2-2.5. Using WISE & Herschel photometry (12 - 500��m) we construct composite SEDs in bins of redshift and AGN luminosity. We perform SED fitting to measure the mean infrared luminosity due to star formation, removing the contamination from AGN emission. We find that the mean SFRs show a weak positive trend with increasing AGN luminosity. However, we demonstrate that the observed trend could be due to an increase in black hole (BH) mass (and a consequent increase of inferred stellar mass) with increasing AGN luminosity. We compare to a sample of X-ray selected AGN and find that the two populations have consistent mean SFRs when matched in AGN luminosity and redshift. On the basis of the available virial BH masses, and the evolving BH mass to stellar mass relationship, we find that the mean SFRs of our QSO sample are consistent with those of main sequence star-forming galaxies. Similarly, the radio-luminous QSOs have mean SFRs that are consistent with both the overall QSO sample and with star-forming galaxies on the main sequence. We present a new modeling of the X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) out to z$\sim$3, dissecting the contribution of main-sequence (MS) and starburst (SB) galaxies. For each galaxy population, we convolved the observed galaxy stellar mass (M$_{\star}$) function with a grid of M$_{\star}$-independent Eddington ratio ($\lambda_{\rm EDD}$) distributions, normalised via empirical black hole accretion rate (BHAR) to star formation rate (SFR) relations. Our simple approach yields an excellent agreement with the observed XLF since z$\sim$3. We find that the redshift evolution of the observed XLF can only be reproduced through an intrinsic flattening of the $\lambda_{\rm EDD}$ distribution, and with a positive shift of the break $\lambda^{*}$, consistent with an anti-hierarchical behavior. The AGN accretion history is predominantly made by massive (10$^{10}$44.36 + 1.28$\cdot$(1+z). We infer that the probability of finding highly-accreting ($\lambda_{\rm EDD}>$ 10%) AGN significantly increases with redshift, from 0.4% (3.0%) at z=0.5 to 6.5% (15.3%) at z=3 for MS (SB) galaxies, implying a longer AGN duty cycle in the early Universe. Our results strongly favor a M$_{\star}$-dependent ratio between BHAR and SFR, as BHAR/SFR $\propto$ M$_{\star}^{0.73[+0.22,-0.29]}$, supporting a non-linear BH buildup relative to the host. In order to answer some of the major open questions in the fields of supermassive black hole (SMBH) and galaxy evolution, a complete census of SMBH growth, i.e., active galactic nuclei (AGN), is required. Thanks to deep all-sky surveys, such as those by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) missions, this task is now becoming feasible in the nearby Universe. Here, we present a new survey, the Local AGN Survey (LASr), with the goal of identifying AGN unbiased against obscuration and determining the intrinsic Compton-thick (CT) fraction. First, we construct the most complete all-sky sample of galaxies within 100 Mpc from astronomical databases (90% completeness for log M_star/M_sun ~9.4), four times deeper than the current local galaxy reference, the Two Micron All-Sky Survey Redshift Survey (2MRS), which turns out to miss 20% of known luminous AGN. These 49k galaxies serve as parent sample for LASr, called LASr-GPS. It contains 4.3k already known AGN, >=82% of these are estimated to have L(12um) < 10^42.3 erg/s, i.e., are low-luminosity AGN. As a first method for identifying Seyfert-like AGN, we use WISE-based infrared colours, finding 221 galaxies at L(12um) >= 10^42.3 erg/s to host an AGN at 90% reliability, This includes 61 new AGN candidates and implies and optical type 2 fraction of 50 to 71%. We quantify the efficiency of this technique and estimate the total number of AGN with L_int(2-10 keV) >= 10^42 erg/s in the volume to be 362^+145_-116 (8.6^+3.5_-2.8 10^-5 Mpc^-3). X-ray brightness estimates indicate the CT fraction to be 40-55% to explain the Swift non-detections of the infrared selected objects. Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are tightly correlated with their hosts but the origin of such connection remains elusive. To explore the cosmic build-up of this scaling relation, we present an empirically-motivated model that tracks galaxy and SMBH growth down to z=0. Starting from a random mass seed distribution at z=10, we assume that each galaxy evolves on the star-forming "main sequence" (MS) and each BH follows the recently-derived stellar mass (M$_{\star}$) dependent ratio between BH accretion rate and star formation rate, going as BHAR/SFR$\propto$M$_{\star}^{0.73[+0.22,-0.29]}$. Our simple recipe naturally describes the BH-galaxy build-up in two stages. At first, the SMBH lags behind the host that evolves along the MS. Later, as the galaxy grows in M$_{\star}$, our M$_{\star}$-dependent BHAR/SFR induces a super-linear BH growth, as M$_{\rm BH}$$\propto$M$_{\star}^{1.7}$. According to this formalism, smaller BH seeds increase their relative mass faster and earlier than bigger BH seeds, at fixed M$_{\star}$, thus setting along a gradually tighter M$_{\rm BH}$-M$_{\star}$ locus towards higher M$_{\star}$. Assuming reasonable values of the radiative efficiency $\epsilon \sim$0.1, our empirical trend agrees with both high-redshift model predictions and intrinsic M$_{\rm BH}$-M$_{\star}$ relations of local BHs. We speculate that the observed non-linear BH-galaxy build-up is reflected in a twofold behavior with dark matter halo mass (M$_{\rm DM}$), displaying a clear turnover at M$_{\rm DM}\sim$2$\times$10$^{12}$M$_{\odot}$. A semi-empirical model is presented that describes the distribution of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) on the cosmic web. It populates dark-matter halos in N-body simulations (MultiDark) with galaxy stellar masses using empirical relations based on abundance matching techniques, and then paints accretion events on these galaxies using state-of-the-art measurements of the AGN occupation of galaxies. The explicit assumption is that the large-scale distribution of AGN is independent of the physics of black-hole fueling. The model is shown to be consistent with current measurements of the two-point correlation function of AGN samples. It is then used to make inferences on the halo occupation of the AGN population. Mock AGN are found in halos with a broad distribution of masses with a mode of $\approx 10^{12}\,h^{-1} \, M_{\odot}$ and a tail extending to cluster-size halos. The clustering properties of the model AGN depend only weakly on accretion luminosity and redshift. The fraction of satellite AGN in the model increases steeply toward more massive halos, in contrast with some recent observational results. Using data from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey, we present a census of AGN-driven ionized outflows in a sample of 159 AGNs at $1.4 \le z \le 3.8$. The sample spans AGN bolometric luminosities of $10^{44-47} \mathrm{~erg~s}^{-1}$ and includes both quiescent and star-forming galaxies extending across three orders of magnitude in stellar mass. We identify and characterize outflows from the \hbeta, [OIII], \halpha ~and [NII] emission line spectra. We detect outflows in $17\%$ of the AGNs, seven times more often than in a mass-matched sample of inactive galaxies in MOSDEF. The outflows are fast and galaxy-wide, with velocities of $\sim 400-3500 ~\mathrm{km~s}^{-1}$ and spatial extents of $0.3-11.0$ kpc. The incidence of outflows among AGNs is independent of the stellar mass of the host galaxy, with outflows detected in both star-forming and quiescent galaxies. This suggests that outflows exist across different phases in galaxy evolution. We investigate relations between outflow kinematic, spatial, and energetic properties and both AGN and host galaxy properties. Our results show that AGN-driven outflows are widespread in galaxies along the star-forming main sequence. The mass-loading factors of the outflows are typically $0.1-1$ and increase with AGN luminosity, capable of exceeding unity at $L_\mathrm{AGN} \gtrsim 10^{46.3} \mathrm{~erg~s}^{-1}$. We present catalogs of calibrated photometry and spectroscopic redshifts in the Extended Groth Strip, intended for studies of photometric redshifts (photo-z's). The data includes ugriz photometry from CFHTLS and Y-band photometry from the Subaru Suprime camera, as well as spectroscopic redshifts from the DEEP2, DEEP3 and 3D-HST surveys. These catalogs incorporate corrections to produce effectively matched-aperture photometry across all bands, based upon object size information available in the catalog and Moffat profile point spread function fits. We test this catalog with a simple machine learning-based photometric redshift algorithm based upon Random Forest regression, and find that the corrected aperture photometry leads to significant improvement in photo-z accuracy compared to the original SExtractor catalogs from CFHTLS and Subaru. The deep ugrizY photometry and spectroscopic redshifts are well-suited for empirical tests of photometric redshift algorithms for LSST. The resulting catalogs are publicly available. The Cosmic X-ray Background (CXB) is the total emission from past accretion activity onto supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and peaks in the hard X-ray band (30 keV). In this paper, we identify a significant selection effect operating on the CXB and flux-limited AGN surveys, and outline how they must depend heavily on the spin distribution of black holes. We show that, due to the higher radiative efficiency of rapidly-spinning black holes, they will be over-represented in the X-ray background, and therefore could be a dominant contributor to the CXB. Using a simple bimodal spin distribution, we demonstrate that only 15 per cent maximally-spinning AGN can produce 50 per cent of the CXB. We also illustrate that invoking a small population of maximally-spinning black holes in CXB synthesis models can reproduce the CXB peak without requiring large numbers of Compton-thick AGN. The spin bias is even more pronounced for flux-limited surveys: 7 per cent of sources with maximally-spinning black holes can produce half of the source counts. The detectability for maximum spin black holes can be further boosted in hard (>10 keV) X-rays by up to ~60 per cent due to pronounced ionised reflection, reducing the percentage of maximally spinning black holes required to produce half of the CXB or survey number counts further. A host of observations are consistent with an over-representation of high-spin black holes. Future NuSTAR and ASTRO-H hard X-ray surveys will provide the best constraints on the role of spin within the AGN population., 13 pages, 1 table, 7 figures. We combine deep X-ray survey data from the Chandra observatory and the wide-area/shallow XMM-XXL field to estimate the AGN X-ray luminosity function in the redshift range z=3-5. The sample consists of nearly 340 sources with either photometric (212) or spectroscopic (128) redshift in the above range. The combination of deep and shallow survey fields provides a luminosity baseline of three orders of magnitude, Lx(2-10keV)~1e43-1e46erg/s at z>3. We follow a Bayesian approach to determine the binned AGN space density and explore their evolution in a model-independent way. Our methodology accounts for Poisson errors in the determination of X-ray fluxes and uncertainties in photometric redshift estimates. We demonstrate that the latter is essential for unbiased measurement of space densities. We find that the AGN X-ray luminosity function evolves strongly between the redshift intervals z=3-4 and z=4-5. There is also suggestive evidence that the amplitude of this evolution is luminosity dependent. The space density of AGN with Lx1e45erg/s. The faint-end slope of UV/optical luminosity functions however, is steeper than for X-ray selected AGN. This implies that the type-I AGN fraction increases with decreasing luminosity at z>3, opposite to trends established at lower redshift. We also assess the significance of AGN in keeping the hydrogen ionised at high redshift. Our X-ray luminosity function yields ionising photon rate densities that are insufficient to keep the Universe ionised at redshift z>4. Using data from the All Wavelength Extended Groth Strip International Survey (AEGIS) we statistically detect the extended X-ray emission in the interstellar medium (ISM)/intracluster medium (ICM) in both active and normal galaxies at 0.3 ≤ z ≤ 1.3. For both active galactic nuclei (AGN) host galaxy and normal galaxy samples that are matched in restframe color, luminosity, and redshift distribution, we tentatively detect excess X-ray emission at scales of 1-10'' at a few σ significance in the surface brightness profiles. The exact significance of this detection is sensitive to the true characterization of Chandra's point-spread function. The observed excess in the surface brightness profiles is suggestive of lower extended emission in AGN hosts compared to normal galaxies. This is qualitatively similar to theoretical predictions of the X-ray surface brightness profile from AGN feedback models, where feedback from AGN is likely to evacuate the gas from the center of the galaxy/cluster. We propose that AGN that are intrinsically underluminous in X-rays, but have equivalent bolometric luminosities to our sources will be the ideal sample to study more robustly the effect of AGN feedback on diffuse ISM/ICM gas.

We use deep Chandra X-ray imaging to measure the distribution of specific black hole accretion rates ($L_X$ relative to the stellar mass of the galaxy) and thus trace AGN activity within star-forming and quiescent galaxies, as a function of stellar mass (from $10^{8.5}-10^{11.5} M_\odot$) and redshift (to $z \sim 4$). We adopt near-infrared selected samples of galaxies from the CANDELS and UltraVISTA surveys, extract X-ray data for every galaxy, and use a flexible Bayesian method to combine these data and to measure the probability distribution function of specific black hole accretion rates, $\lambda_{sBHAR}$. We identify a broad distribution of $\lambda_{sBHAR}$ in both star-forming and quiescent galaxies---likely reflecting the stochastic nature of AGN fuelling---with a roughly power-law shape that rises toward lower $\lambda_{sBHAR}$, a steep cutoff at $\lambda_{sBHAR} \gtrsim 0.1-1$ (in Eddington equivalent units), and a turnover or flattening at $\lambda_{sBHAR} \lesssim 10^{-3}-10^{-2}$. We find that the probability of a star-forming galaxy hosting a moderate $\lambda_{sBHAR}$ AGN depends on stellar mass and evolves with redshift, shifting toward higher $\lambda_{sBHAR}$ at higher redshifts. This evolution is truncated at a point corresponding to the Eddington limit, indicating black holes may self-regulate their growth at high redshifts when copious gas is available. The probability of a quiescent galaxy hosting an AGN is generally lower than that of a star-forming galaxy, shows signs of suppression at the highest stellar masses, and evolves strongly with redshift. The AGN duty cycle in high-redshift ($z\gtrsim2$) quiescent galaxies thus reaches $\sim$20 per cent, comparable to the duty cycle in star-forming galaxies of equivalent stellar mass and redshift., Comment: 20 pages + 3 appendices (27 pages total) with 15 figures. We discuss the spectral analysis of a sample of 63 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) detected above a limiting flux of $S(8-24$ keV$)=7\times10^{-14}$ erg/s/cm$^2$ in the multi-tiered NuSTAR Extragalactic Survey program. The sources span a redshift range z=0-2.1 (median $\langle$z$\rangle=$0.58). The spectral analysis is performed over the broad 0.5-24 keV energy range, combining NuSTAR with Chandra and/or XMM-Newton data and employing empirical and physically motivated models. This constitutes the largest sample of AGN selected at $ >10$ keV to be homogeneously spectrally analyzed at these flux levels. We study the distribution of spectral parameters such as photon index, column density ($N_{\rm H}$), reflection parameter ($R$) and 10-40 keV luminosity ($L_{X}$). Heavily obscured ($\log [N_{\rm H}/cm^{-2}]\ge23$) and Compton Thick (CT; $\log [N_{\rm H}/cm^{-2}]\ge24$) AGN constitute $\sim$25% (15-17 sources) and $\sim$2-3% ( 1-2 sources) of the sample, respectively. The observed $N_{\rm H}$ distribution fairly agrees with predictions of Cosmic X-ray Background population synthesis models (CXBPSM). We estimate the intrinsic fraction of AGN as a function of $N_{H}$, accounting for the bias against obscured AGN in a flux-selected sample. The fraction of CT AGN relative to $\log [N_{\rm H}/cm^{-2}]=20-24$ AGN is poorly constrainted, formally in the range 2-56% (90% upper limit of 66%). We derived a fraction ($f_{abs}$) of obscured AGN ($\log [N_{\rm H}/cm^{-2}]=22-24$) as a function of $L_{X}$ in agreement with CXBPSM and previous z < 1 X-ray determinations. Furthermore $f_{abs}$ at z=0.1-0.5 and $\log (L_{X}/erg$ $s^{-1})\approx43.6-44.3$ agrees with observational measurements/trends obtained over larger redshift intervals. We report a significant anti-correlation of $R$ with $L_{X}$ (confirmed by our companion paper on stacked spectra) with considerable scatter around the median $R$ values., Comments: 38 pages, 17 figures, 8 tables. The NuSTAR serendipitous survey has already uncovered a large number of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), providing new information about the composition of the Cosmic X-ray Background. For the AGN off the Galactic plane, it has been possible to use the existing X-ray archival data to improve source localizations, identify optical counterparts, and classify the AGN with optical spectroscopy. However, near the Galactic Plane, better X-ray positions are necessary to achieve optical or near-IR identifications due to the higher levels of source crowding. Thus, we have used observations with the Chandra X-ray Observatory to obtain the best possible X-ray positions. With eight observations, we have obtained coverage for 19 NuSTAR serendips within 12 deg of the plane. One or two Chandra sources are detected within the error circle of 15 of the serendips, and we report on these sources and search for optical counterparts. For one source (NuSTAR J202421+3350.9), we obtained a new optical spectrum and detected the presence of hydrogen emission lines. The source is Galactic, and we argue that it is likely a Cataclysmic Variable. For the other sources, the Chandra positions will enable future classifications in order to place limits on faint Galactic populations, including high-mass X-ray binaries and magnetars., Comment: 16 pages, accepted by ApJ

We present the X-UDS survey, a set of wide and deep Chandra observations of the Subaru-XMM Deep/UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (SXDS/UDS) field. The survey consists of 25 observations that cover a total area of 0.33 deg$^{2}$. The observations are combined to provide a nominal depth of ~600 ksec in the central 100 arcmin$^{2}$ region of the field that has been imaged with Hubble/WFC3 by the CANDELS survey and $\sim$200 ksec in the remainder of the field. In this paper, we outline the survey's scientific goals, describe our observing strategy, and detail our data reduction and point source detection algorithms. Our analysis has resulted in a total of 868 band-merged point sources detected with a false-positive Poisson probability of $, 15 pages, 11 figures, published in the Astrophysics Journal Supplement Series

The lack of a strong correlation between AGN X-ray luminosity ($L_X$; a proxy for AGN power) and the star formation rate (SFR) of their host galaxies has recently been attributed to stochastic AGN variability. Studies using population synthesis models have incorporated this by assuming a broad, universal (i.e. does not depend on the host galaxy properties) probability distribution for AGN specific X-ray luminosities (i.e. the ratio of $L_X$ to host stellar mass; a common proxy for Eddington ratio). However, recent studies have demonstrated that this universal Eddington ratio distribution fails to reproduce the observed X-ray luminosity functions beyond z$\sim$1.2. Furthermore, empirical studies have recently shown that the Eddington ratio distribution may instead depend upon host galaxy properties, such as SFR and/or stellar mass. To investigate this further we develop a population synthesis model in which the Eddington ratio distribution is different for star-forming and quiescent host galaxies. We show that, although this model is able to reproduce the observed X-ray luminosity functions out to z$\sim$2, it fails to simultaneously reproduce the observed flat relationship between SFR and X-ray luminosity. We can solve this, however, by incorporating a mass dependency in the AGN Eddington ratio distribution for star-forming host galaxies. Overall, our models indicate that a relative suppression of low Eddington ratios ($\lambda_{\rm Edd}\lesssim$0.1) in lower mass galaxies (M, Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS (fixed: issues with some figures not up-to-date)

We present an analysis using the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey on the nature of "MIR-excess" galaxies, which have star formation rates (SFR) inferred from mid-infrared (MIR) data that is substantially elevated relative to that estimated from dust-corrected UV data. We use a sample of $\sim$200 galaxies and AGN at $1.40

We identify sources with extremely hard X-ray spectra (i.e., with photon indices of Gamma10 keV. Eight extreme NuSTAR sources are identified, and we use the NuSTAR data in combination with lower energy X-ray observations (from Chandra, Swift XRT, and XMM-Newton) to characterize the broad-band (0.5-24 keV) X-ray spectra. We present the first spectroscopic measurement of multiple rest-frame optical emission lines at $z>4$. During the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey, we observed the galaxy GOODSN-17940 with the Keck I/MOSFIRE spectrograph. The K-band spectrum of GOODSN-17940 includes significant detections of the [OII]$\lambda\lambda 3726,3729$, [NeIII]$\lambda3869$, and H$\gamma$ emission lines and a tentative detection of H$\delta$, indicating $z_{\rm{spec}}=4.4121$. GOODSN-17940 is an actively star-forming $z>4$ galaxy based on its K-band spectrum and broadband spectral energy distribution. A significant excess relative to the surrounding continuum is present in the Spitzer/IRAC channel 1 photometry of GOODSN-17940, due primarily to strong H$\alpha$ emission with a rest-frame equivalent width of $\mbox{EW(H}\alpha)=1200$ \AA. Based on the assumption of $0.5 Z_{\odot}$ models and the Calzetti attenuation curve, GOODSN-17940 is characterized by $M_*=5.0^{+4.3}_{-0.2}\times 10^9 M_{\odot}$. The Balmer decrement inferred from H$\alpha$/H$\gamma$ is used to dust correct the H$\alpha$ emission, yielding $\mbox{SFR(H}\alpha)=320^{+190}_{-140} M_{\odot}\mbox{ yr}^{-1}$. These $M_*$ and SFR values place GOODSN-17940 an order of magnitude in SFR above the $z\sim 4$ star-forming "main sequence." Finally, we use the observed ratio of [NeIII]/[OII] to estimate the nebular oxygen abundance in GOODSN-17940, finding $\mbox{O/H}\sim 0.2 \mbox{ (O/H)}_{\odot}$. Combining our new [NeIII]/[OII] measurement with those from stacked spectra at $z\sim 0, 2, \mbox{ and } 3$, we show that GOODSN-17940 represents an extension to $z>4$ of the evolution towards higher [NeIII]/[OII] (i.e., lower $\mbox{O/H}$) at fixed stellar mass. Objective Initial report on establishment of a hip service in Phnom Penh, Cambodia at Children's Surgical Centre. We describe indications for total hip replacement (THR) and initial results. Methods A database was established to collect data and track patients for follow up. Initial data collected included; diagnosis, implant used, post-operative complications. As the service developed, pre- and postoperative Harris hip scores were included. Results High rate of avascular necrosis (AVN) as the initial diagnosis. Five years post initiation of the hip service, 95 patients have received 116 THRs; including 10 revisions, 12 bilateral procedures. Complications/failures requiring revision involved four prosthetic femoral neck fractures, two aseptic acetabular component, two late infections, one instability. One failure, a periprosthetic acetabular fracture, required removal of all prosthetics. Complications not requiring revision, included three post-op foot drops, three superficial wound infections, one Vancouver B1 periprosthetic femur fracture. Average age was 41. Overall implant survival is 85% at three years. Discussion AVN was the most common indication for THR: many patients had a history of hip trauma, and/or prolonged steroids from traditional healers for pain. Problems with specific implants were addressed by the company. A different stem is now routinely used, no further fractures have been reported. Acetabular loosening, thought to be due to poor technique, has been addressed by focused training. Infection rate is monitored, and microbiology resources are improving. Conclusion Developing an affordable hip arthroplasty service in a country like Cambodia is challenging. Developing a local registry has helped to identify complications and modify techniques.

We present the results from an X-ray spectral analysis of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the Chandra Deep Field-South, AEGIS-XD and Chandra-COSMOS surveys, focussing on the identification and characterisation of the most heavily obscured, Compton thick (CT, $N_{H}>10^{24} cm^{-2}$) sources. Our sample is comprised of 3184 X-ray selected extragalactic sources, which has a high rate of redshift completeness (97.6 %), and includes improved photometric redshifts over previous studies. We use spectral models designed for heavily obscured AGN which self consistently include all major spectral signatures of heavy absorption. We identify CT sources not selected through our spectral fitting method using X-ray colours, validate our spectral fitting method through simulations, and take considerations for the constraints on $N_{H}$ given the low count nature of many of our sources. After these considerations we identify a total of 100 CT AGN with best-fit $N_{H}>10^{24} cm^{-2}$ and $N_{H}$ constrained to be above $10^{23.5} cm^{-2}$ at 90% confidence. These sources cover an intrinsic $L_{X}$ range of $10^{42}-3x10^{45}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ and a redshift range of z=0.1-4. This sample will enable characterisation of these heavily obscured AGN across cosmic time and to ascertain their cosmological significance. Furthermore, by using the torus models to test different covering factor scenarios, and by investigating the inclusion of the soft scattered emission, we find evidence that the covering factor of the obscuring material decreases with $L_{X}$ for all redshifts, consistent with the receding torus model, and that this factor increases with redshift, consistent with an increase in the obscured fraction towards higher redshifts. Population synthesis models predict that high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) populations produced in low metallicity environments should be more X-ray luminous, a trend supported by studies of nearby galaxies. This trend may be responsible for the observed increase of the X-ray luminosity ($L_{\mathrm{X}}$) per star formation rate (SFR) with redshift due to the decrease of metallicity ($Z$) at fixed stellar mass as a function of redshift. To test this hypothesis, we use a sample of 79 $z\sim2$ star-forming galaxies with oxygen abundance measurements from the MOSDEF survey, which obtained rest-frame optical spectra for $\sim1500$ galaxies in the CANDELS fields at $1.37, Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables

Chandra data in the COSMOS, AEGIS-XD and 4Ms CDFS are combined with optical/near-IR photometry to determine the rest-frame U-V vs V-J colours of X-ray AGN hosts at mean redshifts 0.40 and 0.85. This combination of colours (UVJ) provides an efficient means of separating quiescent from star-forming, including dust reddened, galaxies. Morphological information emphasises differences between AGN split by their UVJ colours. AGN in quiescent galaxies are dominated by spheroids, while star-forming hosts are split between bulges and disks. The UVJ diagram of AGN hosts is then used to set limits on the accretion density associated with evolved and star-forming systems. Most of the black hole growth since z~1 is associated with star-forming hosts. Nevertheless, ~15-20% of the X-ray luminosity density since z~1, is taking place in the quiescent region of the UVJ diagram. For the z~0.40 subsample, there is tentative evidence (2sigma significance), that AGN split by their UVJ colours differ in Eddington ratio. AGN in star-forming hosts dominate at high Eddington ratios, while AGN in quiescent hosts become increasingly important as a fraction of the total population toward low Eddington ratios. At higher redshift, z~0.8, such differences are significant at the 2sigma level only at Eddington ratios >1e-3. These findings are consistent with scenarios in which diverse accretion modes are responsible for the build-up of SMBHs at the centres of galaxies. We compare our results with the GALFORM semi-analytic model, which postulates two black hole fuelling modes, the first linked to star-formation and the second occuring in passive galaxies. We use a combination of the XMM-Newton serendipitous X-ray survey with the optical SDSS, and the infrared WISE all-sky survey in order to check the efficiency of the low X-ray to infrared luminosity selection method in finding heavily obscured AGN. We select sources in the 2-8 keV X-ray band which have a redshift determination in the SDSS catalogue. We match this sample with the WISE catalogue, and fit the SEDs of the 2844 sources which have three, or more, photometric data-points in the infrared. We then select the heavily obscured AGN candidates by comparing their 12 micron AGN luminosity to the observed 2-10 keV X-ray luminosity and their expected intrinsic relation. With this approach we find 20 candidates, and we examine their X-ray and optical spectra. Of the 20 initial candidates, we find nine (64%; out of the 14, for which X-ray spectra could be fit) based on the X-ray spectra, and seven (78%; out of the nine detected spectroscopically in the SDSS) based on the [OIII] line fluxes. Combining all criteria, we determine the final number of heavily obscured AGN to be 12-19, and the number of Compton-thick AGN to be 2-5, showing that the method is reliable in finding obscured AGN, but not Compton-thick. However those numbers are smaller than what would be expected from X-ray background population synthesis models, which demonstrates how the optical-infrared selection and the scatter of the L_x-L_MIR relation introduced by observational constraints limit the efficiency of the method. Finally, we test popular obscured AGN selection methods based on mid-infrared colours, and find that the probability of an AGN to be selected by its mid-infrared colours increases with the X-ray luminosity. However, a selection scheme based on a relatively low X-ray luminosity and mid-infrared colours characteristic of QSOs would not select ~25% of the heavily obscured AGN of our sample. Telemedicine has the potential to increase access to both clinical consultation and continuing medical education in Cambodia. We present a Cambodian surgical centre's experience with a collaboration in which complicated orthopaedic cases were presented to a panel of consultants using free online videoconferencing software, providing a combined opportunity for both continuing education and the enhancement of patient care. Effects of the case conference on patient care were examined via a retrospective review and clinician perspectives were elicited via a qualitative survey. The case conference altered patient care in 69% of cases. All Cambodian staff reported learning from the conference and 78% reported changes in their care for patients not presented at the conference. Real-time videoconferencing between consultants in the developed world and physicians in a developing country may be an effective, low-cost and easily replicable means of combining direct benefits to patient care with continuing medical education.

We use deep Chandra imaging to measure the distribution of X-ray luminosities (L_X) for samples of star-forming galaxies as a function of stellar mass and redshift, using a Bayesian method to push below the nominal X-ray detection limits. Our luminosity distributions all show narrow peaks at L_X < 10^{42} erg/s that we associate with star formation, as opposed to AGN that are traced by a broad tail to higher L_X. Tracking the luminosity of these peaks as a function of stellar mass reveals an "X-ray main sequence" with a constant slope ~0.63 +/- 0.03 over 8.5 < log M*/Msun < 11.5 and 0.1 < z < 4, with a normalization that increases with redshift as (1+z)^{3.79+/-0.12}. We also compare the peak X-ray luminosities with UV-to-IR tracers of star formation rates (SFRs) to calibrate the scaling between L_X and SFR. We find that L_X \propto SFR^{0.83} x (1+z)^{1.3}, where the redshift evolution and non-linearity likely reflect changes in high-mass X-ray binary populations of star-forming galaxies. Using galaxies with a broader range of SFR, we also constrain a stellar-mass-dependent contribution to L_X, likely related to low-mass X-ray binaries. Using this calibration, we convert our X-ray main sequence to SFRs and measure a star-forming main sequence with a constant slope ~0.76+/-0.06 and a normalization that evolves with redshift as (1+z)^{2.95+/-0.33}. Based on the X-ray emission, there is no evidence for a break in the main sequence at high stellar masses, although we cannot rule out a turnover given the uncertainties in the scaling of L_X to SFR., 18 pages + 4 appendices (27 pages total) with 13 figures. We obtain rest-frame optical spectra of galaxies and AGNs and use the BPT diagram to identify optical AGNs. We examine the uniqueness and overlap of the AGNs identified at different wavelengths. There is a strong bias against identifying AGNs at any wavelength in low-mass galaxies, and an additional bias against identifying IR AGNs in the most massive galaxies. AGN hosts span a wide range of star formation rates (SFRs), similar to inactive galaxies once stellar mass selection effects are accounted for. However, we find (at ∼ 2-3σ significance) that IR AGNs are in less dusty galaxies with relatively higher SFR and optical AGNs in dusty galaxies with relatively lower SFR. X-ray AGN selection does not display a bias with host galaxy SFR. These results are consistent with those from larger studies at lower redshifts. Within star-forming galaxies, once selection biases are accounted for, we find AGNs in galaxies with similar physical properties as inactive galaxies, with no evidence for AGN activity in particular types of galaxies. This is consistent with AGNs being fueled stochastically in any star-forming host galaxy. We do not detect a significant correlation between SFR and AGN luminosity for individual AGN hosts, which may indicate the timescale difference between the growth of galaxies and their supermassive black holes.

We present a study of the average X-ray spectral properties of the sources detected by the NuSTAR extragalactic survey, comprising observations of the E-CDFS, EGS and COSMOS fields. The sample includes 182 NuSTAR sources (64 detected at 8-24 keV), with 3-24 keV fluxes ranging between $f_{\rm 3-24 keV}\approx10^{-14}$ and $6\times10^{-13}$ erg/cm$^2$/s ($f_{\rm 8-24 keV}\approx3\times10^{-14}-3\times10^{-13}$ erg/cm$^2$/s) and redshifts of $z=0.04-3.21$. We produce composite spectra from the Chandra+NuSTAR data ($E\approx2-40$ keV, rest frame) for all the sources with redshift identifications (95%) and investigate the intrinsic, average spectra of the sources, divided into broad-line (BL) and narrow-line (NL) AGN, and also in different bins of X-ray column density and luminosity. The average power-law photon index for the whole sample is $\Gamma=1.65_{-0.03}^{+0.03}$, flatter than $\Gamma\approx1.8$ typically found for AGN. While the spectral slope of BL and X-ray unabsorbed AGN is consistent with typical values ($\Gamma=1.79_{-0.01}^{+0.01}$), a significant flattening is seen in NL AGN and heavily-absorbed sources ($\Gamma=1.60_{-0.05}^{+0.08}$ and $\Gamma=1.38_{-0.12}^{+0.12}$, respectively), likely due to the effect of absorption and to the contribution from Compton reflection to the high-energy flux (E>10 keV). We find that the typical reflection fraction in our spectra is $R\approx0.5$ (for $\Gamma=1.8$), with a tentative indication of an increase of the reflection strength with column density. While there is no significant evidence for a dependence of the photon index with X-ray luminosity in our sample, we find that $R$ decreases with luminosity, with relatively high levels of reflection ($R\approx1.2$) for $L_{\rm 10-40 keV}10^{44}$ erg/s AGN, assuming $\Gamma=1.8$., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, 4 tables. Purpose: The aim of this study is to use a defined population of patients with meningococcal septicaemia to calculate the incidence of orthopaedic complications. Methods: Medical records and radiographs were analysed retrospectively for all patients admitted to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children from 01/01/2001 to 31/12/2012 with a primary diagnosis of meningococcal septicaemia. Results: Of the 130 patients with meningococcal septicaemia alive at discharge, 10 developed orthopaedic sequelae, representing an overall incidence in this patient population of 7.7%. 9 patients required an amputation, 8 patients had growth plate abnormalities with 6 having documented angular deformity. Clinical relevance: This study highlights the underestimation of orthopaedic complications following meningococcal septicaemia. Close follow up of at risk patients should be considered to reduce the potential impact of these debilitating injuries.

This paper estimates the specific accretion-rate distribution of AGN using a sample of 4821 X-ray sources from both deep and shallow surveys. The specific accretion-rate distribution is defined as the probability of a galaxy with a given stellar mass and redshift hosting an active nucleus with a certain specific accretion rate. We find that the probability of a galaxy hosting an AGN increases with decreasing specific accretion rate. We present the first full catalog and science results for the NuSTAR serendipitous survey. The catalog incorporates data taken during the first 40 months of NuSTAR operation, which provide ~20Ms of effective exposure time over 331 fields, with an areal coverage of 13 sq deg, and 497 sources detected in total over the 3-24 keV energy range. There are 276 sources with spectroscopic redshifts and classifications, largely resulting from our extensive campaign of ground-based spectroscopic followup. We characterize the overall sample in terms of the X-ray, optical, and infrared source properties. The sample is primarily comprised of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), detected over a large range in redshift from z = 0.002 - 3.4 (median of = 0.56), but also includes 16 spectroscopically confirmed Galactic sources. There is a large range in X-ray flux, from log( f_3-24keV / erg s^-1 cm^-2 ) ~ -14 to -11, and in rest-frame 10-40 keV luminosity, from log( L_10-40keV / erg s^-1 ) ~ 39 to 46, with a median of 44.1. Approximately 79% of the NuSTAR sources have lower energy ( 10^44 erg s^-1) to ~80% at the lowest luminosities (Lx < 10^43 erg s^-1). Our optical spectroscopic analysis finds that the observed fraction of optically obscured AGNs (i.e., the Type 2 fraction) is F_Type2 = 53(+14-15)%, for a well-defined subset of the 8-24 keV selected sample. This is higher, albeit at a low significance level, than the Type 2 fraction measured for redshift- and luminosity-matched AGNs selected by, 49 pages, 23 figures, 8 tables. We present the 3-8 keV and 8-24 keV number counts of active galactic nuclei (AGN) identified in the NuSTAR extragalactic surveys. NuSTAR has now resolved 33-39% of the X-ray background in the 8-24 keV band, directly identifying AGN with obscuring columns up to approximately 1e25 /cm2. In the softer 3-8 keV band the number counts are in general agreement with those measured by XMM-Newton and Chandra over the flux range 5e-15 < S(3 - 8 keV)/(erg/cm2/s) < 1e-12 probed by NuSTAR. In the hard 8-24 keV band NuSTAR probes fluxes over the range 2e-14 < S(8-24 keV)/(erg/cm2/s) < 1e-12, a factor of approximately 100 fainter than previous measurements. The 8-24 keV number counts match predictions from AGN population synthesis models, directly confirming the existence of a population of obscured and/or hard X-ray sources inferred from the shape of the integrated cosmic X-ray background. The measured NuSTAR counts lie significantly above simple extrapolation with a Euclidian slope to low flux of the Swift/BAT 15-55 keV number counts measured at higher fluxes S(15-55 keV) > 1e-11 erg/cm2/s, reflecting the evolution of the AGN population between the Swift/BAT local (z, 8 pages; accepted by the Astrophysical Journal
