Chess experts have repeatedly demonstrated exceptional recall of chessboards, which is weakened by disruption of the chessboard. However, chess experts still perform better than novices when recalling such disrupted chessboards, suggesting a somewhat generalized expertise effect. In the current study, we examined the extent of this generalized expertise effect on early processing of visuo-spatial working memory (VSWM), by comparing 14 chess experts (Elo rating > 2000) and 15 novices on a change-detection paradigm using disrupted chessboards, where attention had to be selectively deployed to either visual or spatial features, or divided across both features. The paradigm differed in the stimuli used (domain-specific chess pieces vs. novel visual shapes) to evaluate domain-general effects of chess expertise. Both experts and novices had greater memory discriminability for chess stimuli than for the unfamiliar stimuli, suggesting a salience advantage for familiar stimuli. Experts, however, demonstrated better memory discriminability than novices not only for chess stimuli presented on these disrupted chessboards, but also for novel, domain-general stimuli, particularly when detecting spatial changes. This expertise advantage was greater for chessboards with supra-capacity set sizes. For set sizes within the working-memory capacity, the expertise advantage was driven by enhanced selective attention to spatial features by chess experts when compared to visual features. However, any expertise-related VSWM advantage disappeared in the absence of the 8 × 8 chessboard display, which implicates the chessboard display as an essential perceptual aspect facilitating the “expert memory effect” in chess, albeit one that might generalize beyond strictly domain-relevant stimuli.

Voluminous research supports holistic processing of faces. However, little is known about how holistic processing affects recognition of newly learned faces, a question of importance for improving performance in police lineups and other real-world tasks. Drawing on cognitive and neuropsychological research, we suggest that holistic processing facilitates the formation of unitized representations that support discrimination between old and new faces-including new faces that contain old parts-through a unidimensional familiarity signal. In the absence of holistic processing, face recognition is based on relational representations that are relatively difficult to encode, but which allow flexible recognition decisions based on match-mismatch detection to be made. Unlike unitized representations, relational representations can support judgments that newly encountered faces match previously experienced faces in some respects (e.g., some of their features) and yet not in others (e.g., other features, global configuration). Four experiments clarified the relationship of holistic processing to the formation of unitized and relational representations of faces. By manipulating the extent of holistic processing while controlling for the overall level of recognition performance, we demonstrate qualitative effects of holistic processing on how recognition decisions are made with faces. Verbal facilitation occurs when describing a face improves its subsequent recognition; but there are several theoretical explanations debated in the literature. The results of the present studies support a relatively unrestricted, parsimonious theory that verbal facilitation occurs because describing a face supports recollection of several different facets of the face-viewing experience. This recollection is then demonstrated by flexibly responding to two competing types of recognition task demands. Participants studied a list of faces and, following each face, performed a nonverbalization task (Experiment 1) or described its features or traits (Experiment 2). Two subsequent recognition tests included intact faces, new faces, and conjunctions (each of which recombined features of two studied faces). Inclusion test instructions emphasized featural information: respond "yes" to both intact and conjunction faces (both of which contained studied features), but "no" to new faces. Exclusion test instructions emphasized configural information: respond "yes" only to intact faces (which were the only test items that matched studied configurations), and "no" to both conjunctions and new faces. Both yes/no responses and confidence ratings supported our hypothesis that verbalization improved discrimination between (a) conjunctions and new faces in the inclusion test, and (b) intact faces and conjunctions in the exclusion test. Additional secondary responses about face type elucidated that verbalization at study improves the ability to recollect either featural or configural information, depending on which type of response the recognition test required. We discuss these findings about practical applications of improved face memory in real-world contexts.

Roughly 26-32% of U. S. veterans who served in the 1991 Persian Gulf War report suffering from chronic health problems. Memory complaints are regularly reported by ill Gulf War veterans (GWV), but limited data verify their complaints. This study investigated episodic memory and brain function in a nationally representative sample of GWV, using a face-name memory task and functional magnetic resonance imaging during encoding. A syndrome classification system was used to subdivide ill GWV into the three major Gulf War Illness syndrome types, "impaired cognition" (GWV-1), "confusion ataxia" (GWV-2), and "central pain" (GWV-3). Memory and brain function of ill GWV were contrasted to deployed and nondeployed well GWV controls (GWV-C). Ill GWV exhibited impaired memory function relative to GWV-C but the patterns of functional brain differences varied. Brain activation differentiated the GWV-C from the ill GWV. The different syndrome types also differed from one another in several brain regions. Additionally, the current study was the first to observe differences in brain function between deployed and nondeployed GWV-C. These results provide (1) evidence of memory impairment in ill GWV and differentiate the syndrome types at a functional neurobiological level, and (2) the role of deployment in the war on brain function.

Roughly 26-32% of US veterans, who served in the first Gulf War, report suffering from chronic health problems ( Golomb, 2008 , Proceedings of the National Academies of Science, 105, 4295). The present study investigated the memory deficits reported by these ill Gulf War veterans (GWV) using a face-name associative memory paradigm administered during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The fMRI data confirmed memory performance on the memory task to be related to the amount of activation in the left hippocampus observed during the study. In addition, ill-GWV demonstrated decreased memory performance relative to unaffected GWV on this memory test, providing evidence of memory deficits using an objective measure of memory.

PurposeTo examine whether semantic access by speech requires attention in children.MethodChildren (N= 200) named pictures and ignored distractors on a cross-modal (distractors: auditory–no face) or multimodal (distractors: auditory–static face and audiovisual–dynamic face) picture word task. The cross-modal task had a low load, and the multimodal task had a high load (i.e., respectively naming pictures displayed on a blank screen vs. below the talker's face on his T-shirt). Semantic content of distractors was manipulated to be related vs. unrelated to the picture (e.g., picture “dog” with distractors “bear” vs. “cheese”). If irrelevant semantic content manipulation influences naming times on both tasks despite variations in loads, Lavie's (2005) perceptual load model proposes that semantic access is independent of capacity-limited attentional resources; if, however, irrelevant content influences naming only on the cross-modal task (low load), the perceptual load model proposes that semantic access is dependent on attentional resources exhausted by the higher load task.ResultsIrrelevant semantic content affected performance for both tasks in 6- to 9-year-olds but only on the cross-modal task in 4- to 5-year-olds. The addition of visual speech did not influence results on the multimodal task.ConclusionYounger and older children differ in dependence on attentional resources for semantic access by speech.

Older adults show elevated false alarm rates on recognition memory tests involving faces in comparison to younger adults. It has been proposed that this age-related increase in false facial recognition reflects a deficit in recollection and a corresponding increase in the use of familiarity when making memory decisions. To test this hypothesis, we examined the performance of 40 older adults and 40 younger adults on a face recognition memory paradigm involving three different types of lures with varying levels of familiarity. A robust age effect was found, with older adults demonstrating a markedly heightened false alarm rate in comparison to younger adults for "familiarized lures" that were exact repetitions of faces encountered earlier in the experiment, but outside the study list, and therefore required accurate recollection of contextual information to reject. By contrast, there were no age differences in false alarms to "conjunction lures" that recombined parts of study list faces, or to entirely new faces. Overall, the pattern of false recognition errors observed in older adults was consistent with excessive reliance on a familiarity-based response strategy. Specifically, in the absence of recollection older adults appeared to base their memory decisions on item familiarity, as evidenced by a linear increase in false alarm rates with increasing familiarity of the lures. These findings support the notion that automatic memory processes such as familiarity remain invariant with age, while more controlled memory processes such as recollection show age-related decline.

The human visual system responds to expertise, and it has been suggested that regions that process faces also process other objects of expertise including chess boards by experts. We tested whether chess and face processing overlap in brain activity using fMRI. Chess experts and novices exhibited face selective areas, but these regions showed no selectivity to chess configurations relative to other stimuli. We next compared neural responses to chess and to scrambled chess displays to isolate areas relevant to expertise. Areas within the posterior cingulate, orbitofrontal cortex, and right temporal cortex were active in this comparison in experts over novices. We also compared chess and face responses within the posterior cingulate and found this area responsive to chess only in experts. These findings indicate that the configurations in chess are not strongly processed by face-selective regions that are selective for faces in individuals who have expertise in both domains. Further, the area most consistently involved in chess did not show overlap with faces. Overall, these results suggest that expert visual processing may be similar at the level of recognition, but need not show the same neural correlates.

We describe some characteristics of persistent musical and verbal retrieval episodes, commonly known as "earworms." In Study 1, participants first filled out a survey summarizing their earworm experiences retrospectively. This was followed by a diary study to document each experience as it happened. Study 2 was an extension of the diary study with a larger sample and a focus on triggering events. Consistent with popular belief, these persistent musical memories were common across people and occurred frequently for most respondents, and were often linked to recent exposure to preferred music. Contrary to popular belief, the large majority of such experiences were not unpleasant. Verbal earworms were uncommon. These memory experiences provide an interesting example of extended memory retrieval for music in a naturalistic situation.

In three experiments, a dual-process approach to face recognition memory is examined, with a specific focus on the idea that a recollection process can be used to retrieve configural information of a studied face. Subjects could avoid, with confidence, a recognition error to conjunction lure faces (each a reconfiguration of features from separate studied faces) or feature lure faces (each based on a set of old features and a set of new features) by recalling a studied configuration. In Experiment 1, study repetition (one vs. eight presentations) was manipulated, and in Experiments 2 and 3, retention interval over a short number of trials (0-20) was manipulated. Different measures converged on the conclusion that subjects were unable to use a recollection process to retrieve configural information in an effort to temper recognition errors for conjunction or feature lure faces. A single process, familiarity, appears to be the sole process underlying recognition of conjunction and feature faces, and familiarity contributes, perhaps in whole, to discrimination of old from conjunction faces.

Principal-component analyses of 4 face-recognition studies uncovered 2 independent components. The first component was strongly related to false-alarm errors with new faces as well as to facial "conjunctions" that recombine features of previously studied faces. The second component was strongly related to hits as well as to the conjunction/new difference in false-alarm errors. The pattern of loadings on both components was impressively invariant across the experiments, which differed in age range of participants, stimulus set, list length, facial orientation, and the presence versus absence of familiarized lures along with conjunction and entirely new lures in the recognition test. Taken together, the findings show that neither component was exclusively related to discrimination, criterion, configural processing, featural processing, context recollection, or familiarity. Rather, the data are consistent with a neuropsychological model that distinguishes frontal and occipitotemporal contributions to face recognition memory. Within the framework of the model, findings showed that frontal and occipitotemporal contributions are discernible from the pattern of individual differences in behavioral performance among healthy young adults.

Eighty-one listeners defined by three age ranges (18-30, 31-59, and over 60 years) and three levels of musical experience performed an immediate recognition task requiring the detection of alterations in melodies. On each trial, a brief melody was presented, followed 5 sec later by a test stimulus that either was identical to the target or had two pitches changed, for a same-different judgment. Each melody pair was presented at 0.6 note/sec, 3.0 notes/sec, or 6.0 notes/sec. Performance was better with familiar melodies than with unfamiliar melodies. Overall performance declined slightly with age and improved substantially with increasing experience, in agreement with earlier results in an identification task. Tempo affected performance on familiar tunes (moderate was best), but not on unfamiliar tunes. We discuss these results in terms of theories of dynamic attending, cognitive slowing, and working memory in aging.

Conjunction errors occur when participants incorrectly identify as "old" novel test stimuli created by recombining parts of two study stimuli (parent items). Prior studies have reported that the conjunction error rate is higher when parent items are studied together than when they are studied apart (a parent proximity effect). In several experiments we attempted to obtain parent proximity effects with naturalistic faces or pairs of symbol strings. We also varied the type of facial conjunction (Experiments 1, 3A-3C), the presentation rate during study (Experiment 5), and the study list length across experiments (long lists in Experiments 1, 3A, 3B.. and 3C; short lists in Experiments 2, 4, and 5). Conjunction effects, but not parent proximity effects, occurred in each experiment. Eyewitness memory is vulnerable to information encountered prior to a lineup. Young (18-30 years) and older (60-80 years) witnesses viewed a crime video. Some witnesses were then exposed to mugshots of innocent suspects that included a critical foil. After a 48-h delay, all the witnesses took part in a target-absent lineup that included the critical foil and five new foils. Witnesses who picked one of the mugshots as the likely perpetrator showed inflated rates of choosing the critical foil from the lineup. Context reinstatement instructions did not reduce choices of innocent foils following mugshot exposure. Despite age-related increases in false choosing, age did not qualify other effects. The results are discussed in terms of commitment, source memory, and gist-based processing.

People of all ages enjoy listening to music, yet most research inmusical development has concentrated on infancy through childhood. Our recent research program examined various aspects of music cognition in younger (ages 18 through 30) and older adults (ages 60 through 80) with varying amounts of musical experience. The studies investigated the independent and combined influences of age and experience on a wide assortment of long and short-term memory tasks. Results showed that some musical tasks reflect the same age-related declines as seen in nonmusical tasks, and musical training does not reduce these age-related declines. In other tasks, experience differences were larger than age differences; in some cases, age differences were nonexistent. The analysis considers how aging and experience may affect different aspects of cognition, and the paper concludes by pointing out the many musical activities that even nonmusical seniors are well equipped to succeed at and enjoy. Why study age differences in memory for music? If shear neglect of a topic can justify it being studied, then surely our question is answered. The voluminous literature on age differences in memory includes only a handful of studies that use musical materials. Recent reviews of this Ii terature by Anderson and Craik (2000), Balota, Dolan, and Duchek (2000), and Backman, Small, and Wahlin (2001 ) do not mention music, and another review by Zacks, Hasher, & Li (2000) mentions only one relevant study. Similarly, only rarely do music cognition journals carry articles concerning age differences. It is clear that we know little about music cognition in old age. But neglect of the problem is only one reason why it needs to be addressed. Several additional reasons come readily to mind. First, everyday observation suggests that older adults enjoy and participate in musical activities. Musical activities have an overall positive effect among people suffering from dementia (Koger, Chapin, & Brotons, 1999) as well among their healthy peers (Darrough & Boswell, 1992). A survey by Gibbons ( 1982) found that 84% of a sample of 152 healthy elderly people wished to improve their musical skills. MUsiC therapists have published suggestions for music programs with the elderly (Bell, 1987; Clair, 1996; Glassman, 1983; Hintz, 2000). However, the dearth of research makes it difficult for therapists to really understand the musical capabilities of their elderly clients. Among the questions that basic research on music and aging can help answer is whether a person can maintain or even improve her or his skill level if given musical training, and to what extent musical programs for older adults should emphasize exposure to familiar vs. new pieces and styles. second, music may be an ideal domain to study the aging of domainspecific processes compared to the aging of general-purpose operations of learning and memory. For example, researchers currently are interested in changes in short-term, or working memory with age. Not only are investigators studying the nature of age differences in working memory itself, they also are examining whether deficits in working memory processes may underlie age differences in long-term memory, prose comprehension, and other cognitive domains. Yet tests of working memory almost always use verbal or visuospatial stimuli, and, for this reason, the dominant model of working memory (Baddeley, 1986) distinguishes only three basic components: a phonological loop, a visuospatial scratchpad, and a central executive. The familiar experience of having a tune "in our head" suggests the operation of a "melodic loop" (Berz, 1995) that might show age differences and have functional importance for a variety of music-related.activities including learning new tunes, recalling old tunes, and, perhaps most important, simply appreciating music. To examine this loop across the adult lifespan is certainly a task that is well worth our time. …

To explore the forensic implications of ‘verbal overshadowing’ in young and older eyewitnesses, we examined the effects of providing a verbal face description on subsequent performance in a lineup task. Young (18–30 years) and older (60–80 years) adults viewed a videotaped crime and performed some unrelated cognitive tasks. Participants in the experimental condition were then asked to supply a description of the target person in the event or to perform a control task. Upon completing the description/control task participants attempted to identify the target person from a target present photo-lineup presented in a sequential or simultaneous mode. Older participants made more false choices and sequential testing reduced correct choices. There was a weak trend consistent with verbal overshadowing that was unrelated to age as well as measures of verbal and face-matching expertise. Although overshadowing reduced performance only slightly, it appeared to affect the self-reported use of a feature-matching strategy linked to accurate decisions by young adults and inaccurate decisions by senior adults. Young (18-30 years) and older (62-79 years) adults (N = 96) engaged in a 20-min live interaction with the future target in a lineup task. One month later, participants were interviewed about the events in the prior encounter (with or without context reinstatement), and then they saw a target-present (TP) or target-absent (TA) lineup. The lineup was followed by the Benton Face Recognition Test (A. Benton, A. Sivan, K. Hamsher, N. Varney, & O. Spreen, 1994), which correlated positively with accuracy in TP, especially for young adults. False identification in TA was associated with (a) higher scores on a memory self-efficacy scale and (b) higher recall of information about the initial event, although only for seniors. Results suggested that age-related increases in false identification generalize to ecologically valid conditions and that seniors' performance on lineups is negatively related to verbal recall as well as to self-reports of satisfactory experiences with memory in life.

Purpose. Older individuals have been found to exceed young adults in false recognitions on line-up tasks. To explore factors involved in this deficit, this study compared effects of post-event information and sequential line-up presentation on false identification by young and elderly adults. Methods. Ninety-eight community-dwelling older adults (ages 57-83) and 97 college students (ages 19-33) saw a videotape of a simulated crime, then heard an auditory narrative. Some heard a review of the events of the crime (including some misinformation) and others heard a control narrative that was unrelated to the video. Participants recalled the crime and then saw either a simultaneous or sequential target-absent line-up. The study compared the relationship of the experimental variables and several individual difference measures to false identification rates on the line-up. Results. Sequential line-ups reduced false identification rates for young and elderly adults. Hearing a relevant post-event narrative increased false identifications, but only in the older group. For the elderly, high verbal recall of the perpetrator's characteristics was also associated with higher false identification rates. In addition, it was found that (1) misleading information in the post-event narratives influenced line-up choices, and (2) higher false identification rates were related to perseverative errors in the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, memory self-efficacy and low Belief in a Just World. Conclusions. Results suggest that reducing post-crime exposure to crime-relevant information, combined with sequential line-ups, can substantially reduce false identification by older witnesses. They also indicate the need to explore further the influence of post-event information, sequential line-up presentation, availability, and self-confidence upon older eyewitnesses.

We provide a description and interpretation of signal detection theory as applied to the analysis of an individual stimulus in a recognition experiment. Despite the common use of signal detection theory in this context, especially in the face recognition literature, the assumptions of the model have rarely been made explicit. In a series of simulations, we first varied the stability of d’ and C in face sampling distributions and report the pattern of correlations between the hit and false alarm rate components of the model across the simulated experiments. These kinds of correlation measures have been reported in recent face recognition papers and have been considered to be theoretically important. The simulation data we report revealed widely different correlation expectations as a function of the parameters of the face sampling distribution, making claims of theoretical importance for any particular correlation questionable. Next, we report simulations aimed at exploring the effects of face sampling distribution parameters on correlations between individual components of the signal detection model (i.e. hit and false alarm rates), and other facial measures such as typicality ratings. These data indicated that valid interpretations of such correlations need to make reference to the parameters of the relevant face sampling distribution.

Recent work in the psychological literature has indicated that attractive faces are in some ways “average” [J.H. Langlois, L.A. Roggman, Attractive faces are only average, Psychological Science, 1(2) (1990) 115–121] and that the apparent age of a face can be related to its proximity to the average of a computationally derived “face space” [A.J. O'Toole, T. Vetter, H. Volz, E.M. Salter, Three-dimensional caricatures of human heads: distinctiveness and the perception of facial age, Perception, 26 (1997) 719–732]. We examined the relationship between facial attractiveness, age, and “averageness”, using laser scans of faces that were put into complete correspondence with the average face [T. Vetter, V. Blanz, Estimating coloured 3D face models from single images: an example based approach, in: H. Burkhardt, B. Neumann (Eds.), Proceedings of the Fifth European Conference on Computer Vision, Freiburg, Germany, 1998, pp. 499–513]. This representation enabled selective normalization of the 3D shape versus the surface texture map of the faces. Shape-normalized faces, created by morphing the texture maps from individual faces onto the average head shape, and texture-normalized faces, created by morphing the average texture onto the shape of each individual face, were judged by human subjects to be both more attractive and younger than the original faces. The study shows that relatively global, psychologically meaningful attributes of faces can be modeled very simply in face spaces of this sort.

We explored the ability of older (60-80 years old) and younger (18-23 years old) musicians and nonmusicians to judge the similarity of transposed melodies varying on rhythm, mode, and/or contour (Experiment 1) and to discriminate among melodies differing only in rhythm, mode, or contour (Experiment 2). Similarity ratings did not vary greatly among groups, with tunes differing only by mode being rated as most similar. In the same/different discrimination task, musicians performed better than nonmusicians, but we found no age differences. We also found that discrimination of major from minor tunes was difficult for everyone, even for musicians. Mode is apparently a subtle dimension in music, despite its deliberate use in composition and despite people's ability to label minor as "sad" and major as "happy."

A classic finding in research on human expertise and knowledge is that of enhanced memory for stimuli in a domain of expertise as compared to either stimuli outside that domain, or within-domain stimuli that have been or degraded or distorted in some way. However, we do not understand how the expert brain processes within-domain stimuli that have been distorted enough to be perceived as impossible or wrong, and yet still are perceived as within the domain (e.g., a face with the eyes, nose and mouth in the wrong positions, or a chessboard with pieces placed randomly on the board). Focusing on the domain of chess, we present new fMRI evidence that when experts view such distorted/within-domain stimuli, they engage an active search for structure – a kind of exploratory chunking – that involves a component of a prefrontal-parietal network linked to consciousness, attention and working memory.

Toward the ultimate goal of enhancing human performance in cyber security, we attempt to understand the cognitive components of cyber security expertise. Our initial focus is on cyber security attackers - often called “hackers”. Our first aim is to develop behavioral measures of accuracy and response time to examine the cognitive processes of pattern-recognition, reasoning and decision-making that underlie the detection and exploitation of security vulnerabilities. Understanding these processes at a cognitive level will lead to theory development addressing questions about how cyber security expertise can be identified, quantified, and trained. In addition to behavioral measures our plan is to conduct a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study of neural processing patterns that can differentiate persons with different levels of cyber security expertise. Our second aim is to quantitatively assess the impact of attackers' thinking strategies - conceptualized by psychologists as heuristics and biases - on their susceptibility to defensive techniques (e.g., “decoys,” “honeypots”). Honeypots are an established method to lure attackers into exploiting a dummy system containing misleading or false content, distracting their attention from genuinely sensitive information, and consuming their limited time and resources. We use the extensive research and experimentation that we have carried out to study the minds of successful chess players in order to study the minds of hackers with the ultimate goal of enhancing the security of current systems. This paper outlines our approach.

Face processing has several distinctive hallmarks that researchers have attributed either to face-specific mechanisms or to extensive experience distinguishing faces. Here, we examined the face-processing hallmark of selective attention failure--as indexed by the congruency effect in the composite paradigm--in a domain of extreme expertise: chess. Among 27 experts, we found that the congruency effect was equally strong with chessboards and faces. Further, comparing these experts with recreational players and novices, we observed a trade-off: Chess expertise was positively related to the congruency effect with chess yet negatively related to the congruency effect with faces. These and other findings reveal a case of expertise-dependent, facelike processing of objects of expertise and suggest that face and expert-chess recognition share common processes.

If the mouth and eyes of a face are inverted, the altered construction appears grotesque when upright, but not when upside-down. Three studies of this "Thatcher illusion" employed faces that were grotesque when upright because: (a) their eyes and mouths had been inverted ("Thatcherized" faces), (b) their eyes and mouths had been moved (spatially distorted faces), or (c) they had grotesque posed expressions. Inversion reduced the apparent grotesqueness of both Thatcherized and spatially distorted faces, but not grotesque-expression faces. Moreover, Thatcherized and distorted faces, although not grotesque-expression faces, were judged as more similar to normal, smiling faces when face-pairs were inverted than when they were upright. Similarity ratings to inverted face-pairs were correlated with latencies of response to these pairs in a task that encouraged attention to components (e.g., mouths, eyes) rather than wholistic properties. Similarity ratings to upright face-pairs showed no such correlation, and this and other findings suggested that although similarity ratings to upright faces are based on wholistic information, similarity ratings to inverted faces are based largely on components. The Thatcher illusion reflects a disruption of encoding of wholistic information when faces are inverted.

Memory for music presents a paradox. On the one hand, memory for music that people have already learned can be astonishingly good, both in extent and longevity. On the former point, consider how many tunes an average person could recognize, or even recall. No one has even attempted to measure the limits of musical memory. Concerning longevity, older adults can show excellent retention of music learned decades previously (Bartlett and Snelus 1981; Rubin et al. 1998). Even early-stage Alzheimer’s disease patients can almost perfectly discriminate familiar tunes such as patriotic and holiday songs from musically similar but unfamiliar tunes (Bartlett et al. 1995). And this memory can persist not just for songs that have words, but also for purely melodic motives, and without much context. For instance, it is not uncommon to turn on the radio and hear just a few notes of a tune, and be able immediately to hum along or at least recognize the tune as familiar.

Objectives and Background. Pulmonary venous flows recorded by pulsed wave Doppler transesopnageal echocardiography examination can be used to assess the severity of mitral regurgitation. Pulmonary venous flows are also related to left atrial pressures; however, the determinants of these flows have yet to be characterized in the presence of mitral regurgitation. Methods. We simultaneously recorded intraoperative pulmonary venous flows by transesophageal echocardiography and left atrial pressures by direct left atrial puncture in 16 patients with different grades of mitral regurgitation: 2+ (n = 5), 3+ (n = 4) and 4+ (n = 7). Pulmonary venous peak systolic and diastolic flow velocities and peak reversed systolic flow velocities were compered with left atrial pressure aand vwaves, a-xand v-ydescent values and left atrial volumes. Results. Pulmonary venous systolic to diastolic flow ratios correlated with decreases in left atrial pressure av ratios and with increases in the vwaves of patients with higher grades of mitral regurgitation. Univariate analysis revealed that the best determinants of the pulmonary venous systolic to diastolic low ratio were the left atrial pressure vwave (r = −0.76), the v-ydescent value (r = −0.73) and the av ratio (r = 0.71). Lower correlations were found for left atrial end-systolic (r = −0.48) and end-diastolic (r = −0.42) volumes. Reversed systolic flow was present in patients with 4+ mitral regurgitation, despite left atrial enlargement. Conclusions. Pulmonary venous flow can be used to assess the severity of mitral regurgitation and reflects the effects of mitral regurgitation severity on the left atrial pressure aand vwaves.

Twenty-eight consecutive patients underwent aortic valvuloplasty for aortic insufficiency caused by leaflet prolapse. The technique involved triangular resection of the free edge of the prolapsing leaflet, annular plication at the commissure, and resection of a raphe when present in bicuspid valves. Mean age of the patients was 46.8 ± 14.4 years. Twenty-six (92.7%) were male. Seventy-five percent of the patients had a bicuspid aortic valve; the remaining valves were tricuspid. The extent of aortic insufficiency was 3.6 ± 0.8 by aortography, 3.1 ± 0.1 by preoperative Doppler echocardiography, and 3.4 ± 0.7 by intraoperative Doppler echocardiography. Elderly persons exceed young adults in false recognitions of new faces. One account claims there are age-related deficits in memory for context of encounter with faces. Because of these deficits, elderly persons frequently recognize faces on the basis of perceived familiarity (i.e., resemblance to face representations in memory), which is high for some new faces. To test this context-recollection hypothesis, we had young adult and elderly subjects judge whether faces: (1) had been seen previously in a test (though no face was repeated), and (2) were subjectively familiar (though no face was famous). The elderly exceeded the young subjects in seen-before judgements (false recognitions), and only the elderly showed a positive correlation between false recognitions and subjective familiarity. In Experiment 2, this finding was extended from false recognitions to correct recognitions, supporting the view that elderly persons, compared to young adults, rely more on resemblance in recognizing faces.

Studies of age differences in face recognition have shown age-related increases in false-alarm errors: elderly persons exceed young adults in judging new faces to be old. To distinguish among theoretical accounts of this finding, we compared young and elderly subjects in two recognition tasks: (1) that of judging whether faces were recent or nonrecent, and (2) that of judging whether faces were famous or nonfamous. The major independent variable was prior presentation of faces-including nonrecent and nonfamous foils-1 week before the test. False recent judgments in response to nonrecent faces and false famous judgments in response to nonfamous faces were higher among the elderly. Moreover, these age-related differences in false-alarm rates were larger for faces viewed 1 week previously than for entirely new faces. The findings suggest that, compared to young adults, older individuals rely relatively more on perceived familiarity, and relatively less on recollection of context, in making recognition decisions.

As a way to examine the nature of age-related differences in lineup identification accuracy, young (16-33 years) and older (60-82 years) witnesses viewed two similar videotaped incidents, one involving a young perpetrator and the other involving an older perpetrator. The incidents were followed by two separate lineups, one for the younger perpetrator and one for the older perpetrator. When the test delay was short (35 min), the young and older witnesses performed similarly on the lineups, but when the tests were delayed by 1 week, the older witnesses were substantially less accurate. When the target was absent from the lineups, the older witnesses made more false alarm errors, particularly when the faces were young. When the target was present in the lineups, correct identifications by both young and older witnesses were positively correlated with a measure of source recollection derived from a separate face-recognition task. Older witnesses scored poorly on this measure, suggesting that source-recollection deficits are partially responsible for age-related differences in performance on the lineup task.

Studies of aging and face recognition show age-related increases in false recognitions of new faces. To explore implications of this false alarm effect, we had young and senior adults perform (1) three eye-witness identification tasks, using both target present and target absent lineups, and (2) and old/new recognition task in which a study list of faces was followed by a test including old and new faces, along with conjunctions of old faces. Compared with the young, seniors had lower accuracy and higher choosing rates on the lineups, and they also falsely recognized more new faces on the recognition test. However, after screening for perceptual processing deficits, there was no age difference in false recognition of conjunctions, or in discriminating old faces from conjunctions. We conclude that the false alarm effect generalizes to lineup identification, but does not extend to conjunction faces. The findings are consistent with age-related deficits in recollection of context and relative age invariance in perceptual integrative processes underlying the experience of familiarity.

We tested normal young and elderly adults and elderly Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients on recognition memory for tunes. In Experiment 1, AD patients and age-matched controls received a study list and an old/new recognition test of highly familiar, traditional tunes, followed by a study list and test of novel tunes. The controls performed better than did the AD patients. The controls showed the "mirror effect" of increased hits and reduced false alarms for traditional versus novel tunes, whereas the patients false-alarmed as often to traditional tunes as to novel tunes. Experiment 2 compared young adults and healthy elderly persons using a similar design. Performance was lower in the elderly group, but both younger and older subjects showed the mirror effect. Experiment 3 produced confusion between preexperimental familiarity and intraexperimental familiarity by mixing traditional and novel tunes in the study lists and tests. Here, the subjects in both age groups resembled the patients of Experiment 1 in failing to show the mirror effect. Older subjects again performed more poorly, and they differed qualitatively from younger subjects in setting stricter criteria for more nameable tunes. Distinguishing different sources of global familiarity is a factor in tune recognition, and the data suggest that this type of source monitoring is impaired in AD and involves different strategies in younger and older adults.

Transthoracic echocardiography may be of limited value for patients in intensive care units because of suboptimal patient positioning, surgical wounds, and mechanical ventilation. By contrast, transesophageal echocardiography provides a new window for cardiac imaging, even in critically ill patients. We report our indications based on findings comparing transesophageal and transthoracic echocardiography in 112 studies in intensive care units. The transesophageal approach diagnosed 131 significant findings, compared to only 95 (73%) found transthoracically. Transesophageal echocardiography was superior to the transthoracic approach in patients with significant (higher than 2+) mitral regurgitation, with improved detection in 10 (9%) cases (p less than 0.05). Transesophageal echocardiography also provided additional information in the evaluation of vegetations, diseases of the aorta, visualization of the left ventricle, intracardiac masses, intracardiac thrombi, and congenital heart disease. Transesophageal echocardiography provides a useful diagnostic tool for evaluation of critically ill patients.
