Personal exposure PM samples aid in determining the sources and chemical composition of real-world exposures, particularly in settings with household air pollution. However, their use in toxicological research is limited, despite uncertainty regarding health effects in these settings and evidence of differential toxicity among PM2.5 sources and components. This study used women's PM2.5 exposure samples collected using personal exposure monitoring in rural villages in three Chinese provinces (Beijing, Shanxi, and Sichuan) during summer and winter. Water-soluble organic carbon, ions, elements, and organic tracers (e.g. levoglucosan and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAHs]) were quantified in water and organic PM2.5 extracts. Human lung epithelial cells (A549) were exposed to the extracts. Cell death, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and gene expression were measured. Biomass burning contributions were higher in Sichuan samples than in Beijing or Shanxi. Some PM characteristics (total PAHs and coal combustion source contributions) and biological effects of organic extract exposures (cell death, ROS, and cytokine gene expression) shared a common trend of higher levels and effects in winter than in summer for Shanxi and Beijing but no seasonal differences in Sichuan. Modulation of phase I/AhR-related genes (cyp1a1 and cyp1b1) and phase II/oxidative stress-related genes (HO-1, SOD1/2, NQO-1, and catalase) was either low or insignificant, without clear trends between samples. No significant cell death or ROS production was observed for water extract treatments among all sites and seasons, even at possible higher concentrations tested. These results support organic components, particularly PAHs, as essential drivers of biological effects, which is consistent with some other evidence from ambient PM2.5., Direct measurement with personal samplers captures the chemical complexity of PM2.5 exposures better than fixed monitors. To investigate biological effects, lung cells were exposed to extracts of exposure PM2.5 samples.

Cities in southern Chile are facing high levels of PM2.5 because of wood burning pollution. We quantify the contribution of wood smoke to fine particles in two mid-size cities: Molina and Valdivia, located in different climate zones. The sampling campaigns were carried out during austral winter (July to September) in 2018 (Molina) and 2019 (Valdivia). 24-h filter samples were analyzed for carbonaceous compounds, secondary ions, metals, and particle-phase organic molecular markers. Average winter concentrations of PM2.5 were 53 ± 32 μg/m3 (average ± standard deviation) in Molina and 89 ± 55 μg/m3 in Valdivia. The major component of fine particles was organic matter, representing more than 70% of PM2.5. Concentrations of organic molecular markers were used in a receptor model (US EPA CMB8.2) to identify and quantify primary sources of PM2.5. The major source of PM2.5 was wood smoke, which accounted for 41.55 ± 9.77 μg/m3 (62.9 ± 15.3%) in Molina and 43.65 ± 24.06 μg/m3 (51.7 ± 21.1%) in Valdivia. Secondary organic aerosols (SOA) generated from inefficient wood burning, contributed 20.4 ± 17.7% in Molina and 28.9 ± 27.6% in Valdivia. Secondary inorganic ions and dust are minor sources of PM2.5. The total contribution of wood smoke (adding primary wood smoke and SOA) could be as much as 83% in Molina and 81% in Valdivia, during the winter season.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) with a higher oxidative potential has been thought to be more detrimental to pulmonary health. We aim to investigate the associations between personal exposure to PM2.5 oxidative potential and pulmonary outcomes in asthmatic children. We measured each of the 43 asthmatic children 4 times for airway mechanics, lung function, airway inflammation, and asthma symptom scores. Coupling measured indoor and outdoor concentrations of PM2.5 mass, constituents, and oxidative potential with individual time-activity data, we calculated 24 h average personal exposures 0-3 days prior to a health outcome measurement. We found that increases in daily personal exposure to PM2.5 oxidative potential were significantly associated with increased small, large, and total airway resistance, increased airway impedance, decreased lung function, and worsened scores of individual asthma symptoms and the total symptom score. Among the PM2.5 constituents, organic matters largely of indoor origin contributed the greatest to PM2.5 oxidative potential. Given that the variability in PM2.5 oxidative potential was a stronger driver than PM2.5 mass for the variability in the respiratory health outcomes, it is suggested to reduce PM2.5 oxidative potential, particularly by reducing the organic matter constituent of indoor PM2.5, as a targeted source control strategy in asthma management.

Even though methane concentrations have contributed an estimated 23% of climate forcing, part of the recent increases in the global methane background concentrations remain unexplained. Satellite remote sensing has been used extensively to constrain emission inventories, for example with the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument which has been measuring methane since November 2017. We have identified enhancements of methane over 61 urban areas around the world and estimate their emissions using a two-dimensional Gaussian model. We show that methane emissions from urban areas may be underestimated by a factor of 3–4 in the Emissions Database for Global Atmospheric Research (EDGAR) greenhouse gas emission inventory. Scaling our results to the 385 urban areas with more than 2 million inhabitants suggests that they could account for up to 22% of global methane emissions. The emission estimates of the 61 urban areas do not correlate with the total or sectoral EDGAR emission inventory. They do however correlate with estimated rates of untreated wastewater, varying from 33 kg person−1 year−1 for cities with zero untreated wastewater to 138 kg person−1 year−1 for the cities with the most untreated wastewater. If this relationship were confirmed by higher resolution remote sensing or in situ monitoring, we estimate that reducing discharges of untreated wastewater could reduce global methane emissions by up to 5%–10% while at the same time yielding significant ecological and human co-benefits.

Each year, considerable levels of dust particles coming from arid regions of the earth contribute to the atmosphere. Because dust has serious environmental and human health effects, predictions of dust concentrations and their contribution to PM surface concentrations are essential for atmospheric research and the implementation of air quality programs and rules. This study aims to assess dust contributions to PM2.5 in Tehran in order to provide guidance for air quality management systems as well as validate the updated Dust Regional Atmospheric Model version 2 (BSC-DREAM8b) and the NMMB/BSC-Dust model using chemical speciation of ground-based measurements of PM2.5. Accurate and reliable measurements are necessary to determine the sources of pollutants as well as to confirm, validate, and improve models. For this purpose, dust concentration and contribution were calculated from chemical speciation of PM2.5 samples that were obtained on a 6 day basis for a whole year from February 2014 to February 2015. The comparison of the dust observations to the model products revealed that model outputs were in good agreement for the monthly averaged values. However, for the daily averaged values, models and ground observation showed a considerable difference. In order to understand possible reasons for the discrepancy, differences between neighboring grid cells were investigated, as well as the effect of sampling frequency. It is found that agreement between models and observations was sensitive to sampling duration and frequency but not to spatial variability between grid cells. This study is the first validation of model outputs with the calculated dust concentration from ground-based chemical speciation of PM2.5 rather than using total PM or aerosol optical depth measurements as a proxy for dust concentrations.

Background In highly polluted urban areas, personal exposure to PM2.5 and O3 occur daily in various microenvironments. Identifying which microenvironments contribute most to exposure can pinpoint effective exposure reduction strategies and mitigate adverse health impacts. Methods This work uses real-time sensors to assess the exposures of children with asthma (N = 39) in Shanghai, quantifying microenvironmental exposure to PM2.5 and O3. An air cleaner was deployed in participants' bedrooms where we hypothesized exposure could be most efficiently reduced. Monitoring occurred for two 48-h periods: one with bedroom filtration (portable air cleaner with HEPA and activated carbon filters) and the other without. Results Children spent 91% of their time indoors with the majority spent in their bedroom (47%). Without filtration, the bedroom and classroom environments were the largest contributors to PM2.5 exposure. With filtration, bedroom PM2.5 exposure was reduced by 75% (45% of total exposure). Although filtration status did not impact O3, the largest contribution of O3 exposure also came from the bedroom. Conclusions Actions taken to reduce bedroom PM2.5 and O3 concentrations can most efficiently reduce total exposure. As real-time pollutant monitors become more accessible, similar analyses can be used to evaluate new interventions and optimize exposure reductions for a variety of populations.

Portable air cleaners are increasingly used in polluted areas in an attempt to reduce human exposure; however, there has been limited work characterizing their effectiveness at reducing exposure. With this in mind, we recruited forty-three children with asthma from suburban Shanghai and deployed air cleaners (with HEPA and activated carbon filters) in their bedrooms. During both 2-week filtration and non-filtration periods, low-cost PM2.5 and O3 air monitors were used to measure pollutants indoors, outdoors, and for personal exposure. Indoor PM2.5 concentrations were reduced substantially with the use of air cleaners, from 34 ± 17 to 10 ± 8 µg/m3 , with roughly 80% of indoor PM2.5 estimated to come from outdoor sources. Personal exposure to PM2.5 was reduced from 40 ± 17 to 25 ± 14 µg/m3 . The more modest reductions in personal exposure and high contribution of outdoor PM2.5 to indoor concentrations highlight the need to reduce outdoor PM2.5 and/or to clean indoor air in multiple locations. Indoor O3 concentrations were generally low (mean = 8±4 ppb), and no significant difference was seen by filtration status. The concentrations of pollutants and the air cleaner effectiveness were highly variable over time and across homes, highlighting the usefulness of real-time air monitors for understanding individual exposure reduction strategies.

Biomass combustion for cooking and heating releases particulate matter (PM2.5 ) that contributes to household air pollution. Fuel and stove types affect the chemical composition of household PM, as does infiltration of outdoor PM. Characterization of these impacts can inform future exposure assessments and epidemiologic studies, but is currently limited. In this study, we measured chemical components of PM2.5 (water-soluble organic matter [WSOM], ions, black carbon, elements, organic tracers) in rural Chinese households using traditional biomass stoves, semi-gasifier stoves with pelletized biomass, and/or non-biomass stoves. We distinguished households using one stove type (traditional, semi-gasifier, or LPG/electric) from those using multiple stoves/fuels. WSOM concentrations were higher in households using only semi-gasifier or traditional stoves (31%-33%) than in those with exclusive LPG/electric stove (13%) or mixed stove use (12%-22%). Inorganic ions comprised 14% of PM in exclusive LPG/electric households, compared to 1%-5% of PM in households using biomass. Total PAH content was much higher in households that used traditional stoves (0.8-2.8 mg/g PM) compared to those that did not (0.1-0.3 mg/g PM). Source apportionment revealed that biomass burning comprised 27%-84% of PM2.5 in households using biomass. In all samples, identified outdoor sources (vehicles, dust, coal combustion, secondary aerosol) contributed 10%-20% of household PM2.5 .

Residents of polluted cities frequently use indoor air purifiers in an attempt to improve their health by reducing their exposure to air pollutants, despite the fact that few studies have assessed these devices under relevant field conditions. Low-cost air monitors are increasingly popular for monitoring air pollution exposure; however, they must be calibrated and evaluated in their deployment location first to ensure measurement accuracy and precision. In this study, we developed a 2-step calibration method in which a low-cost monitor is calibrated against a reference analyzer and is then used to calibrate other monitors, shortening the required calibration time and reducing measurement error. The monitors in our experiment measured indoor, outdoor, and personal exposure PM2.5 concentrations during 1 week each of true and sham filtration in 7 homes in Beijing, China. On average, filtration reduced the indoor and personal exposure relevant concentrations by 72% (std. err. = 7%) and 28% (std. err. = 5%), respectively. This study indicates that minimizing personal exposure, however, also requires reducing the infiltration of outdoor air in homes or decreasing PM2.5 pollution at the city or country level.

Heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) are carcinogenic and mutagenic compounds formed by the cooking of meat and combustion of biomass. There are relatively few data on HAAs in atmospheric particulate matter (PM). We developed an analytical method using high performance liquid chromatography – tandem mass spectrometry (tandem quadrupole, HPLC-MS/MS(QqQ)) to analyze PM samples for 12 HAAs. We applied this method to an urban air standard reference material and wildfire-impacted PM2.5 from the 2018 wildfire season in Northern California. The PM sample matrix adversely impacted the MS/MS response, with high levels of ion suppression for sample masses >4 mg and higher ion suppression in wildfire-impacted particulate matter compared with the standard reference material. Despite detection limits at the low ng level, no HAAs were detected in the standard reference material, but β-carboline norharman (0.34 ng/m3) was detected in one wildfire sample.

A simple method that reproducibly creates validation/reference materials for comparison of methods that measure the carbonaceous content of atmospheric particulate matter deposited on filter media at concentrations relevant to atmospheric levels has been developed and evaluated. Commonly used methods to determine the major carbonaceous components of particles collected on filters include optical attenuation for “Black” (BC) and “Brown” (BrC) carbon, thermal-optical analysis (TOA) for “Elemental” (EC) and “Organic” (OC) carbon, and total combustion for “Total” carbon (TC). The new method uses a commercial inkjet printer to deposit ink containing both organic and inorganic components onto filter substrates at programmable print densities (print levels, as specified by the printer–software combination). A variety of filter media were evaluated. The optical attenuation (ATN) of the deposited sample was determined at 880 nm and 370 nm. Reproducibility or precision (as standard deviation or in percent as coefficient of variation) in ATN for Teflon-coated glass-fiber, Teflon, and cellulose substrates was better than 5%. Reproducibility for other substrates was better than 15%. EC and OC measured on quartz-fiber filters (QFF) compared to ATN measured at 880 nm and 370 nm on either QFF or Teflon-coated glass-fiber yielded R2 > 0.92 and >0.97, respectively. In communities with household solid fuel use, transitioning to clean stoves/fuels often results in only moderate reductions in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposures; the chemical composition of those exposures may help explain why. We collected personal exposure (men and women) and outdoor PM2.5 samples in villages in three Chinese provinces (Shanxi, Beijing, and Guangxi) and measured chemical components, including water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), ions, elements, and organic tracers. Source contributions from chemical mass balance modeling (biomass burning, coal combustion, vehicles, dust, and secondary inorganic aerosol) were similar between outdoor and personal PM2.5 samples. Principal component analysis of organic and inorganic components identified analogous sources, including a regional ambient source. Chemical components of PM2.5 exposures did not differ significantly by gender. Participants using coal had higher personal/outdoor (P/O) ratios of coal combustion tracers (picene, sulfate, As, and Pb) than those not using coal, but no such trend was observed for biomass burning tracers (levoglucosan, K+, WSOC). Picene and most levoglucosan P/O ratios exceeded 1 even among participants not using coal and biomass, respectively, indicating substantial indirect exposure to solid fuel emissions from other homes. Contributions of community-level emissions to exposures suggest that meaningful exposure reductions will likely require extensive fuel use changes within communities., Exposure to household air pollution depends not only on an individual’s own fuel use but also on outdoor air pollution and their neighbors’ fuel use.

The development of infrastructure, a rapidly increasing population, and urbanization has resulted in increasing air pollution levels in the African city of Addis Ababa. Prior investigations into air pollution have not yet sufficiently addressed the sources of atmospheric particulate matter. This study aims to identify the major sources of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and its seasonal contribution in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Twenty-four-hour average PM2.5 mass samples were collected every 6th day, from November 2015 through November 2016. Chemical species were measured in samples and source apportionment was conducted using a chemical mass balance (CMB) receptor model that uses particle-phase organic tracer concentrations to estimate source contributions to PM2.5 organic carbon (OC) and the overall PM2.5 mass. Vehicular sources (28%), biomass burning (18.3%), plus soil dust (17.4%) comprise about two-thirds of the PM2.5 mass, followed by sulfate (6.5%). The sources of air pollution vary seasonally, particularly during the main wet season (June–September) and short rain season (February–April): From motor vehicles, (31.0 ± 2.6%) vs. (24.7 ± 1.2%), biomass burning, (21.5 ± 5%) vs. (14 ± 2%), and soil dust, (11 ± 6.4%) vs. (22.7 ± 8.4%), respectively, are amongst the three principal sources of ambient PM2.5 mass in the city. We suggest policy measures focusing on transportation, cleaner fuel or energy, waste management, and increasing awareness on the impact of air pollution on the public’s health.

The Tibetan Plateau is generally considered to be a significantly clean area owing to its high altitude; however, the transport of atmospheric pollutants from the Indian subcontinent to the Tibetan Plateau has infected the Tibetan environments. Nyingchi is located at the end of an important water vapor channel. In this study, continuous monitoring of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM), gaseous oxidized mercury (GOM), and particle-bound mercury (PBM) was conducted in Nyingchi from March 30 to September 3, 2019, to study the influence of the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) on the origin, transport and behavior of mercury. The atmospheric Hg concentrations during the preceding Indian summer monsoon (PISM) period (1.20 ± 0.35 ng m−3, 13.5 ± 7.3 pg m−3, and 11.4 ± 4.8 pg m−3 for GEM, GOM, and PBM, respectively) were relatively higher than those during the ISM period (0.95 ± 0.21 ng m−3, 12.7 ± 14.3 pg m−3 and 8.8 ± 6.0 pg m−3). The average annual total gaseous mercury concentration in the Nyingchi region was obtained using a passive sampler as 1.12 ± 0.28 ng m−3. The GEM concentration showed that the sampling area was very clean. The GEM has several patterns of daily variation during different periods. Stable high GEM concentrations occur at night during PISM, which may be related to the nocturnal boundary layer. High values occurring in the late afternoon during the ISM may be related to long-range transport. The results of the trajectory model demonstrate that the sources of pollutants at Nyingchi are different under the control of different airflow fields. During westerly circulation, pollutants mainly originate from northeast India or Nepal. During the ISM period, the pollutants mainly originate from northeast India, or the Bay of Bengal, and the Indian Ocean. The strong precipitation and vegetation effects on Hg during the ISM resulted in low Hg concentrations transmitted to Nyingchi during this period. Further, principal component analysis showed that long-distance transport, local emissions, meteorological factors, and snowmelt factors are the main factors affecting the local Hg concentration in Nyingchi.

The inorganic components of particulate matter (PM), especially transition metals, have been shown to contribute to PM toxicity. In this study, the spatial distribution of PM elements and their potential sources in the Greater Los Angeles area were studied. The mass concentration and detailed elemental composition of fine (PM2.5) and coarse (PM2.5-10) particles were assessed at 46 locations, including urban traffic, urban community, urban background, and desert locations. Crustal enrichment factors (EFs), roadside enrichments (REs), and bivariate correlation analysis revealed that Ba, Cr, Cu, Mo, Pd, Sb, Zn, and Zr were associated with traffic emissions in both PM2.5 and PM2.5-10, while Fe, Li, Mn, and Ti were affected by traffic emissions mostly in PM2.5. The concentrations of Ba, Cu, Mo, Sb, Zr (brake wear tracers), Pd (tailpipe tracer), and Zn (associated with tire wear) were higher at urban traffic sites than urban background locations by factors of 2.6–4.6. Both PM2.5 and PM2.5-10 elements showed large spatial variations, indicating the presence of diverse emission sources across sampling locations. Principal component analysis extracted four source factors that explained 88% of the variance in the PM2.5 elemental concentrations, and three sources that explained 86% of the variance in the PM2.5-10 elemental concentrations. Based on multiple linear regression analysis, the contribution of traffic emissions (27%) to PM2.5 was found to be higher than mineral dust (23%), marine aerosol (18%), and industrial emissions (8%). On the other hand, mineral dust was the dominant source of PM2.5-10 with 45% contribution, followed by marine aerosol (22%), and traffic emissions (19%). This study provides novel insight into the spatial variation of traffic-related elements in a large metropolitan area.

The severity of high atmospheric pollution has been a major social problem in northern China. To improve the air quality in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region and guarantee a suitable environment during the military parade and other celebrating activities for the 70th anniversary of the victory for anti-Fascist Warcraft in the year 2015, a series of strict air quality control policies were carried out. To analyze the reduction extents of PM2.5 and organic matter components during the control period and to examine the meteorological conditions in this region and their decisive influence on the air quality, PM2.5 samples were collected and the Lagrangian particle dispersion model FLEXPART was performed to calculate potential source locations within the BTH region. PM2.5, organic carbon (OC), elementary carbon (EC), and three species types were specifically analyzed. Although the results showed that PM2.5, OC, and EC reduced by 64.55%, 48.74%, and 60.75% during the control period, the air mass transport patterns showed great difference at certain periods, which altered the dominant transport direction of air mass and the potential source region of pollutants and organic matters. This alteration completely changed major atmospheric pollutants sources contribution and caused huge concentration changes. Parallel cases also showed that meteorological conditions could avoid massive atmospheric transported from a major emission source region to a receptor site. The meteorological conditions changed the main contribution source region in control and non-control periods and proved the air quality control measures were less necessary in some southern Hebei cities during special events periods.

The analysis of high-resolution changes in black carbon (BC) concentrations was examined to distinguish and quantify various spatial-scale contributions to BC concentrations from nearby sources within 1 km distance to ranges of emission sources distributed over a larger city scale spanning tens of kilometers. Our analysis illustrated that BC emissions on the neighborhood scale only contribute a minor fraction (~15%) to total BC concentrations in the megacity of Tehran. Approximately 62% of the total black carbon is part of the city emissions, and around 23% is transported into the city from local nearby surroundings. Our analysis in highly polluted areas, including industrial and traffic hotspots in Tehran, demonstrated that the contributions of the urban mixture were relatively smaller than the average (~56%) in highly polluted areas; however, larger local-scale (~30%) contributions were observed in these areas. Our analysis in traffic hotspot areas also demonstrated significantly smaller contributions of BC from neighborhood surroundings (~9%). These results imply that the city-scale BC emissions in Tehran are a major contributor to BC exposures even in locations with local high-emitting sources. Polar annulus analysis of BC from city-scales in Tehran showed a mixture of hotspot locations ranging from north to easterly directions implying that city-scale emissions contribute to wider pollution plume expansions and larger-scale transport and vertical mixing corresponding to mixtures of emitters located further away.

A common strategy to improve indoor air quality in households burning coal and biomass is the introduction of advanced combustion solid fuel stoves, which can use existing fuels yet emit fewer pollutants. Chemical composition of PM is affected by numerous combustion parameters, but is often not considered in energy transitions, despite varying toxicity among chemical components. We analyzed PM2.5 emissions from combustion of solid fuels (coal, wood, and straw; whole and pelletized) in a variety of stoves (cookstoves and heating stoves; traditional and semi-gasifier, including forced versus natural draft and fixed versus reciprocating grate). To assess the effects of fuel and stove type on PM2.5 composition, we measured elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC), water-soluble OC, water-soluble inorganic ions (e.g. SO42-, Cl-, K+), and organic molecular markers. PM2.5 emissions from traditional stoves were mostly carbonaceous: 76-90% organic matter (OM), 5-6% EC, and less than 2% inorganic ions. In contrast, semi-gasifier stoves emitted more inorganic PM2.5: on average, ions comprised 65%, 9% was OM, and 4% was EC. Within the semi-gasifier cookstoves, forced-draft cookstove emissions had lower OM (1-3%) and higher ion concentrations (84-88%) than the natural-draft cookstove (5-14% OM, 30-83% ions). Levoglucosan was detected in PM2.5 from combustion of wood in the traditional cookstove and biomass pellets in the natural-draft semi-gasifier cookstove, but not from wood pellets in the forced-draft semi-gasifier cookstove. Across a range of different fuels and stoves, stove type influenced emitted PM composition more than fuel type, underscoring the impact of combustion conditions on PM chemical composition.

Increased public awareness of the health impacts of atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has led to increased demand and deployment of indoor air cleaners. Yet, questions still remain about the effectiveness of indoor air cleaners on indoor PM2.5 concentrations and personal exposure to potentially hazardous components of PM2.5. Metals in PM2.5 have been associated with adverse health outcomes, so knowledge of their sources in urban indoor and outdoor areas and how exposures are influenced by indoor air cleaners would be beneficial for public health interventions. We collected 48-h indoor, outdoor, and personal PM2.5 exposure samples for 43 homes with asthmatic children in suburban Shanghai, China during the spring months. Two sets of samples were collected for each household, one set with a functioning air filter placed in the bedroom ("true filtration") and the other with a non-functioning ("sham") air cleaner. PM2.5 samples were analyzed for elements, elemental carbon, and organic carbon. The major sources of metals in PM2.5 were determined by Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) to be regional aerosol, resuspended dust, residual oil combustion, roadway emissions, alloy steel abrasion, and a lanthanum (La) and cerium (Ce) source. Under true filtration, the median indoor to outdoor percent removal across all elements increased from 31% to 78% and from 46% to 88% across all sources. Our findings suggest that indoor air cleaners are an effective strategy for reducing indoor concentrations of PM2.5 metals from most sources, which could translate into improved health outcomes for some populations.

Identifying the key chemical compounds and source contributions in ambient particles associated with the burden of cardiopulmonary disease is important to develop cost-effective air pollution mitigating strategies that maximize the protection of public health. To help address this need, we examined 109 daily ambient fine particulate matter samples (PM2.5) that were collected in Beijing in one year. The samples were analyzed for chemical composition including organic and elemental carbons, metals, ions, as well as organic molecular markers. In addition, the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were measured by exposing lung epithelial cells (A549) to water extracts of PM2.5 samples. Single pollutant and constituent-PM2.5 joint linear models were used to estimate the associations. Higher PM2.5 mass and measured chemical components were found in cold seasons than in warm seasons due to the greater contributions of secondary inorganic sources, biomass burning, and coal combustion. Water-soluble organic nitrogen (WSON) had the strongest associations with levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines compared to PM2.5 mass and other chemical species in both the one and constituent-PM2.5 joint linear models. Our study is the first to highlight that ambient WSON from diverse sources dominates the inflammatory potential of lung epithelial cells.
