Taiwan Photon Source (TPS) is a synchrotron radiation facility of medium energy, 3 GeV, and low emittance, under construction at National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC). The multipole errors of lattice magnets were rigorously examined and corrected so as to maintain the dynamic aperture of the electron beam in the storage ring. The lattice magnets were fully inspected at both the vendor and vendee sites. The multipole errors of the lattice magnets were tested and corrected. In particular, the sextupole magnets have the pole position adjusted to correct the multipole errors so as to conform to the specification. The yoke cutting is to correct the octupole error of the long-quadrupole magnets. The shimming of the magnetic center and the final examination of the magnets will be undertaken at NSRRC. This work develops an augmented particle swarm optimization (AugPSO) algorithm using two new strategies,:boundary-shiftingandparticle-position-resetting. The purpose of the algorithm is to optimize the design of truss structures. Inspired by a heuristic, theboundary-shiftingapproach forces particles to move to the boundary between feasible and infeasible regions in order to increase the convergence rate in searching. The purpose of theparticle-position-resettingapproach, motivated by mutation scheme in genetic algorithms (GAs), is to increase the diversity of particles and to prevent the solution of particles from falling into local minima. The performance of the AugPSO algorithm was tested on four benchmark truss design problems involving 10, 25, 72 and 120 bars. The convergence rates and final solutions achieved were compared among the simple PSO, the PSO with passive congregation (PSOPC) and the AugPSO algorithms. The numerical results indicate that the new AugPSO algorithm outperforms the simple PSO and PSOPC algorithms. The AugPSO achieved a new and superior optimal solution to the 120-bar truss design problem. Numerical analyses showed that the AugPSO algorithm is more robust than the PSO and PSOPC algorithms. Taiwan Photon Source (TPS) is a low-emittance synchrotron radiation factory. The lattice magnets are located compactly within the limited space in the storage ring. The mutual proximity of the magnets induces field crosstalk and influences the dynamic aperture of the electron beam. The field becomes distorted, induced by the crosstalk within not only the iron yoke but also the edges of the magnets. Precise measurements with rotating-coil systems were conducted to characterize the integral field quality of the magnets; a new method to detect the center of magnets is presented. Simulation with TOSCA software was undertaken for comparison with these experimental results. We report the field distortions induced by crosstalk on the basis of our measurements and simulations. This paper presents the design of magnets for the storage ring of the 3-GeV Taiwan Photon Source project. Detailed calculations of the field were performed according to a three-dimensional model, and the magnetic geometry was determined in transverse and longitudinal planes to conform to highly precise magnetic fields. The final tolerances of the pole profiles of the magnets within 20 \mum were manufactured and measured in all prototype magnets. The characteristics of the magnetic fields were measured with Hall-probe and rotating-coil systems to verify the quality of the magnetic fields. The centers of the magnets will be aligned on the girder with precisely machined rails within 20 \mum, and the magnets have no provision for shimming on the girder. A 130-pole superconducting undulator with NbTi wires was wound and tested at National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC). The magnetic field was measured with a cryogenic mini-Hall sensor in a vertical dewar. The difference of total length between the nominal design and that measured experimentally with the Hall probe is approximately 1.2 mm; this discrepancy arises from the thermal contribution during the field measurement in the test dewar. The reliability of the measurement system is confirmed, and is discussed in terms of the field-mapping spectrum. The measurement of the field strength revealed a non-uniform distribution of the field in the 1 m long arrays. An iron pole piece was used to shim the on-axis field strength of the undulators. Extraction of crude oil from oil sand produces solid (sand) and liquid (water with suspended fine particles) tailings materials, called oil sands process-affected materials (OSPM). These waste materials are stored on the mine site due to a “zero discharge” policy and must be reclaimed when operations end. The liquid tailings materials are known to contain naphthenic acids and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and have high pH and salinity. One method of reclamation is the “wet landscape” approach, which involves using oil sands tailings materials to form wetlands that would mimic natural wetland ecological function. This study investigated the effects of wetlands formed with oil sands tailings materials on the survival and growth of wood frog (Rana sylvatica) larvae. In spring 2007, in-situ caging studies were completed in 14 wetlands that were of four different classes; young or old, reference or reclaimed. Tadpole survival was different between types of wetlands, with young tailings-affected wetlands (≤7 years old) having 41.5%, 62.6%, and 54.7% higher tadpole mortality than old tailings-affected (>7 years old), young reference, and old reference wetlands, respectively. Since old wetlands created from OSPM showed effects on tadpoles similar to those of reference wetlands, which had markedly lower toxicity than young tailings-affected wetlands, we provide evidence that wetlands, at least 7 years old, can sustain amphibian life. The wire windings and magnetic performance of the mini-pole superconducting undulator (SCU) at the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC) are being improved. NbTi superconducting (SC) wire with a rectangular cross section 0.51 mm x 0.77 mm was wound on a racetrack iron pole. The designed field strength was 1.4 T at excitation current 510 A. The bath LHe-cryostat cools the SC wire directly and uniformly using LHe. A stainless-steel (SS) beam duct (thickness 0.3 mm) is designed to separate the ultra-high vacuum (UHV) from the storage ring and the LHe. The SS beam duct is glued to the dummy arrays with resin epoxy. The dummy arrays provide a strong support for the beam duct, providing against deformity from a pressure differential. A vacuum test was performed with a short version of a beam duct (length 400 mm) at low temperature. A cryogen-free cryostat for a superconducting undulator with a period of 15 mm (SU15) was developed at the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC). A 0.44 mm-thin superconducting NbTi wire was wound on iron pole with a racetrack profile. The design field strength of SU15 was 1.4 T and the coil had 148 turns/pole at 230 A; the magnet gap was 5.6 mm. The liquid helium (LHe) recondensation cryostat was designed for SU15. The cryostat provides the advantage of uniform cooling and reduces the amount of LHe consumed. A 0.3 mm-thick stainless steel (SS) beam duct was formed to separate the vacuum in the storage ring from the magnet. Therefore, all of dirty material is produced out of storage ring vacuum. Most of the heat leaked from the LHe vessel leaks from the LHe-fill port heat leak and the 300 K-4.2 K beam duct or was associated with image current power dissipation (ICPD) and bending magnet power dispersion (BMPD). The leaking of heat from the main coil was prevented by the high-temperature superconducting current leads (HTSC). The beam duct was coated with a copper layer with a high-RRR ratio to reduce image current heating. The heat loads on the magnet were cooled using two 1.5 W Gifford-MacMahon (GM) type cryocoolers via LHe medium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A mini-pole planar vertically-wound racetrack coil undulator was studied to determine its potential for use as a hard X-ray source in a 3 GeV storage ring. A field strength of 1.4 T can be obtained for a superconducting undulator with a periodic length of 1.5 cm and a fixed magnetic gap of 5.6 mm. The magnetic circuit was optimized and a current density of 1090 A/mm², at 80% of the critical current, meets the field strength requirement. A prototype with 40 poles was constructed to verify the design of the magnet and the performance of NbTi superconductor. Additionally, the magnetic field shimming method was developed for spectrum shimming. We investigate the electronic structures of hole-doped, La0.7Ca0.3MnO3, and electron-doped, La0.7Ce0.3MnO3, manganites by x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy at the O and Mn K-edges. While, the O K-edge XANES results indicate that Ca and Ce doping induce holes in O 2 p derived states, the Mn K-edge XANES do not give any evidence for creation of the Mn4+ (or Mn2+) ions by Ca (or Ce) dopants. BACKGROUND Antiplatelet treatment with aspirin and oral anticoagulants reduces reoccurrence of ischaemic events after myocardial infarction. We aimed to investigate which of these drugs is more effective in the long term after acute coronary events, and whether the combination of aspirin and oral anticoagulants offers greater benefit than either of these agents alone, without excessive risk of bleeding. METHODS In a randomised open-label trial in 53 sites, we randomly assigned 999 patients to low-dose aspirin, high-intensity oral anticoagulation, or combined low-dose aspirin and moderate intensity oral anticoagulation. Patients were followed up for a maximum of 26 months. The primary composite endpoint was first occurrence of myocardial infarction, stroke, or death. FINDINGS The primary endpoint was reached in 31 (9%) of 336 patients on aspirin, in 17 (5%) of 325 on anticoagulants (hazard ratio 0.55 [95% CI 0.30-1.00], p=0.0479), and in 16 (5%) of 332 on combination therapy (0.50 [0.27-0.92], p=0.03). Major bleeding was recorded in three (1%) patients on aspirin, three (1%) on anticoagulants (1.03 [0.21-5.08], p=1.0), and seven (2%) on combination therapy (2.35 [0.61-9.10], p=0.2). Frequency of minor bleeding was 5%, 8% (1.68 [0.92-3.07], p=0.20), and 15% (3.13 [1.82-5.37], p=<0.0001), in the three groups, respectively. 164 patients permanently discontinued the study drug. Analyses were done by intention to treat. INTERPRETATION In patients recently admitted with acute coronary events, treatment with high-intensity oral anticoagulants or aspirin with medium-intensity oral anticoagulants was more effective than aspirin on its own in reduction of subsequent cardiovascular events and death. In this study we measured the Fe, Mn, and Ni L[sub 2,3]-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) of the ferromagnetic (FM) NiFe and antiferromagnetic (AFM) FeMn bilayer films prepared with various annealing temperatures. The branching ratios of the white-line intensities in the Fe, Mn, and Ni L[sub 2,3]-edges XANES spectra and consequently the magnetic properties of these exchange-biased FM NiFe — AFM FeMn bilayers are found to depend strongly on the annealing temperature. We find that the first peak in the Fe, Mn, and Ni K-edge EXAFS Fourier transform spectra are very similar, which suggests that the nearest-neighbor bond lengths among Fe, Mn, and Ni atoms are essentially the same in the NiFe-FeMn bilayers. However, the peaks at distances greater than ∼ 3 Å appear to be sensitive to the annealing temperature especially for the Fe and Mn K-edge spectra, which suggests that annealing alters the atomic structures of the next-nearest-neighbor and more distant shells surrounding the Fe and Mn atoms in the NiFe-FeMn bilayers. Applying neural network computing to structural engineering problems has received increasing interest, with particular emphasis placed on a supervised neural network with the backpropagation (BP) learning algorithm. In this article, we present an integrated fuzzy neural network (IFN) learning model by integrating a newly developed unsupervised fuzzy neural network (UFN) reasoning model with a supervised learning model in structural engineering. The UFN reasoning model is developed on the basis of a single-layer laterally connected neural network with an unsupervised competing algorithm. The IFN learning model is compared with the BP learning algorithm as well as with a counterpropagation learning algorithm (CPN) using two engineering analysis and design examples from the recent literature. This comparison indicates not only a superior learning performance in solved instances but also a substantial decrease in computational time for the IFN learning model. In addition, the IFN learning model is applied to a complicated engineering design problem involving steel structures. This work presents the O K- and Ti L3,2-edge x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra of PbxSr1-xTiO3 (PxSTO) and BaxSr1-xTiO3 (BxSTO) compounds with various Pb and Ba concentrations. The result provides direct evidence that the Pb–O bonding strongly affects O 2p–Ti 3d hybridization in the TiO6 octahedron of PxSTO. In contrast, the Ba–O bonding does not substantially affect O 2p–Ti 3d hybridization in BxSTO. The Ti L3-edge XANES spectra show the splitting of the eg band for PxSTO with x>=0.5, which provides an evidence of Pb-induced tetragonal distortion in the TiO6 octahedron. This work presents N, O K-edge x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and Ta L3-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) studies of amorphous Ta(N,O) films prepared with various flow rate ratios of N2/O2. The N and O K-edge XANES and Ta L3-edge EXAFS spectra demonstrate the presence of N2 molecules. These spectra also show that Ta(N,O) films have similar local atomic structure as that of Ta2O5. No evidence of the formation of Ta–N bond was obtained. The intensities of the π* feature in the N K-edge spectra and the features of O 2p–Ta 5d hybridized states were found to correlate with the residual stress and the refractive index, respectively. The electronic and atomic structures of quasi-one-dimensional blue bronze K0.3MoO3 were investigated by polarization-dependent O K-edge x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and Mo K-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements at various temperature and applied voltages. The O K-edge XANES spectra suggest that the number of unoccupied O 2p–Mo 4d hybridized states increases and decreases with temperature, respectively, below and above a critical temperature of 180 K. The along b-axis electric current measurements show a threshold applied voltage, beyond which the current increases rapidly. The Mo K-edge EXAFS measurements show that the Mo–O bond lengths are insensitive to the temperature even beyond 180 K. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study performs O K- and Ti L[sub 3,2]-edge x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) measurements and first-principles pseudopotential calculations for the electronic structures of ABO[sub 3]-type Pb[sub 1-x]Ca[sub x]TiO[sub 3] (x=0–1) perovskites. The features in the O K-edge XANES spectra are found to be contributed primarily by hybridization between O 2p and Ti 3d, Pb 6p, and Ca 3d orbitals. The O K-edge XANES spectra reveal that partial substitution of A cations, Pb, by Ca not only decreases O 2p–Pb 6p but also O 2p–Ti 3d hybridization. The Ti L[sub 3,2]-edge measurements find that the off-center displacement of Ti, and hence, ferroelectricity persist up to a Ca concentration between 0.3 and 0.4. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM) measurements have been employed to obtain information on the electronic structures of the GaN nanowires and thin film. The comparison of the XANES spectra revealed that the nanowires have a smaller (larger) N (Ga) K edge XANES intensity than that of the thin film, which suggests an increase (decrease) of the occupation of N 2p (Ga 4p) orbitals and an increase of the N (Ga) negative (positive) effective charge in the nanowires. The SPEM spectra showed that the Ga 3d band for the nanowires lies about 20.8 eV below the Fermi level and has a chemical shift of about -0.9 eV relative to that of the thin film. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. Using x-ray absorption and valence-band photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) we investigated the electronic structures of icosahedral (i)-Al[SUB70]Pd[SUB22.5]Re[SUB7.5] quasicrystals (QCs) with a 4.2 K/300 K resistivity ratio, r, ranging from 8.3 to 107 obtained under various annealing conditions. Our Al K-and Pd L[SUB3]-edge x-ray absorption results show that the density of states, N(E), near the Fermi level, E[SUBF], jumps to a larger value when r decreases down to below about 20.6. The valence-band PES results show that N(E) near E[SUBF] is greatly reduced in i-Al[SUB70]Pd[SUB22.5]Re[SUB7.5] QCs relative to that of the pure metal, which confirms the existence of the pseudogap. The PES spectrum has a sharp cutoff at E[SUBF] for r = 8.3 QC, while it decreases smoothly down to zero at E[SUBF] for larger r's. The combined results suggest the occurrence of metal-insulator transition at an r between 13 and 20.6. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

X-ray-absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements have been performed to investigate the local electronic structures of the Fe-catalyzed and stabilized carbon nanotubes (CNT) with various diameters. The intensities of the π[sup *]- and σ[sup *]-band and the interlayer-state features in the C K-edge XANES spectra of these CNTs vary with the diameter of the CNT. The white-line features at the C K- and Fe L[sub 3]-edges suggest a strong hybridization between the C 2p and Fe 3d orbitals, which lead to an enhancement of the C K- and reduction of the Fe L[sub 3]-edge features, respectively, indicative of a charge transfer from C 2p to Fe 3d orbitals. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra of hard amorphous a-Si–C–N thin films with various compositions were measured at the C and N K-edge using sample drain current and fluorescent modes. The C K-edge XANES spectra of a-Si–C–N contain a relatively large 1s→π[sup *] peak, indicating that a substantial percentage of carbon atoms in the a-Si–C–N films have sp[sup 2] or graphite-like bonding. Both the observed sp[sup 2] intensity and the Young’s modulus decrease with an increase in the carbon content. For N K-edge XANES spectra of the a-Si–C–N films we find the emergence of a sharp peak near the threshold when the carbon content is larger than between 9% and 36%, which indicates that carbon and nitrogen atoms tend to form local graphitic carbon nitride. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. X-ray absorption spectroscopy has been used to investigate the electronic structure of as-deposited and oxidized Ni/Au contacts on p-GaN. The Ni K-, L[sub 2,3]-, and O K-edges x-ray absorption spectra clearly show the formation of NiO in the annealed contacts. Annealing in air increases Ni-site hole concentration and slightly shortens the nearest-neighbor Ni-O bond length, which enhances p-d hybridization and charge transfer from Ni to O. The observed very low specific contact resistance in the oxidized contacts is found to be due to the enhanced hole concentration at the Ni site. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. We measured x-ray absorption near-edge-structure (XANES) spectra of nanocrystalline- (nc-) and amorphous- (a-) Fe[sub 73.5]Cu[sub 1]Nb[sub 3]Si[sub 13.5]B[sub 9] (nc-FCNSB and a-FCNSB) and Fe[sub 78]Si[sub 13]B[sub 9] (a-FeSiB) alloys at the Fe L[sub 3,2] edge using the sample drain current mode and at the Cu L[sub 3,2], and Nb L[sub 3] edge and Si K edge using the fluorescence mode. The features in the Fe L[sub 3]-edge XANES spectrum of nc-FCNSB changed shape significantly with the addition of Cu and Nb to the Fe-Si-B alloy under the optimum annealing conditions, indicating that Cu and Nb strongly influence the Fe 3d local electronic structure. Closely examining the Cu L[sub 3,2]-edge XANES spectrum of nc-FCNSB reveals that the Cu clusters essentially have a body-centered-cubic structure. The white-line features at the Nb L[sub 3] edge suggest a slight increase in delocalization of Nb 4d orbits when a-FCNSB is crystallized into nc-FCNSB. The use of HTS (high-temperature superconductor) coils for accelerator magnets decreases significantly the power consumption and operating cost. Therefore, a preliminary study was launched and a prototype of a dipole magnet with HTS coils has been designed and fabricated by NSRRC and HTS-110 Ltd. Although 2G YBCO wire is expected to be used in future HTS applications, it currently requires more joints to form the completed coils. For this reason, we chose 1G BSCCO wires for the HTS coils. Two single-stage pulse-tube refrigerators with one compressor serve to cool the HTS coils of the magnet, but we shall use LN2 to replace the pulse-tube refrigerators in the future. The HTS magnet is designed to provide a stable field of strength 1.19 T with field homogeneity better than 1.5\times 10^-4 in the range of the transverse direction -20\leq x\leq 20\ mm when it operates at 50 K with a current of 110 A. To compare with the field features of copper-coil dipole magnets, a Hall-probe measurement system was used to measure the detailed magnetic field and B-I characteristics of the HTS dipole magnet at NSRRC. For the study of high-temperature superconductors and for the application of superconductivity, a superconducting high-field magnetization system with a hybrid superconducting coil was designed. This coil is composed of superconducting wires of three kinds—HTS YBCO 2G-wire, high-field and low-field NbTi wires. Three principal purposes of building this system are to inspect the characteristics of disk-shape bulk YBCO, to develop a HTS-bulk undulator, and to magnetize a portable HTS-bulk high-field magnet for application to a resonant X-ray scattering experiment. With four steps of temperature decrease, a two-stage GM-type cryocooler and liquid nitrogen provide cooling for the magnetization system. The hybrid superconducting coil, two cryogenic systems for the magnetization system and the portable HTS-bulk magnet, and the control and monitor systems that were designed are discussed. Electronic structures of hole-doped and electron hole-doped manganites, La[sub 0.7]Ca[sub 0.3]MnO[sub 3] and La[sub 0.7]Ce[sub 0.3]MnO[sub 3], have been elucidated by X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra of O K- and Mn L[sub 3,2]-edges. In the electron-doped system, La[sub 0.7]Ce[sub 0.3]MnO[sub 3], the spectral features of O K-edge spectra are shifted by ∼ 1 eV towards the higher energy side and reduction of Mn valency from 4[sup +] and 3[sup +] to 3[sup +] and 2[sup +] is expected when compared to hole-doped manganite. The XANES of Ce M[sub 5,4]-edges indicates a tetravalent state for Ce, similar to that in CeO[sub 2]. Ce[sup 4+] is incorporated into the lattice of LaMnO[sub 3], resulting in the modification of MnO[sub 6] octahedra and also indicating strong hybridization of Ce 5d and/or Ce 4f states with O 2p states. The electronic properties of amorphous carbon nitride were studied by x-ray-absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and valence-band photoelectron spectroscopy (PES). The nitrogen incorporation was found to induce graphitization, as evidenced by an increase of the sp2 cluster in C and N K-edge XANES spectra. The structure is found to be similar to pyridine. Hybridized C–N bond lengths were determined from the position of the σ* resonance of XANES spectra and the obtained results suggest sp2 hybridization. A valence-band PES spectrum showed that the p-π band became more intense than the p-σ band upon higher at. % nitrogen addition, which confirmed the role played by the π bonds in controlling the electronic structure of a-CNx films. O K-, Zn L3, and K-edges x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra and scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM) spectra were obtained for ZnO nanorods with various diameters. The analysis of the XANES spectra revealed increased numbers of O 2p and Zn 4p unoccupied states with the downsizing of the nanorods, which reflects the enhancement of surface states when the diameter is decreased. Valence-band photoemission spectra show a significant narrowing of the valence band for the 45 nm diameter nanorod. The Zn 3d intensities in the Zn 3d SPEM spectra are drastically diminished for all nanorods as compared to the ZnO reference film, which can be interpreted as a reduction in density of itinerant final states or in transition probability. Angle-dependent x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM) measurements have been performed to differentiate local electronic structures of the tips and sidewalls of highly aligned carbon nanotubes. The intensities of both &pi*- and σ*-band C K-edge XANES features are found to be significantly enhanced at the tip. SPEM results also show that the tips have a larger density of states and a higher C 1s binding energy than those of sidewalls. The increase of the tip XANES and SPEM intensities are quite uniform over an energy range wider than 10 eV in contrast to earlier finding that the enhancement is only near the Fermi level. A strong field and short period undulator can be a desirable light source device in a storage ring or a free-electron laser. Bulk YBCO can be used to construct a high-temperaturesuperconducting undulator in a staggered array structure. The YBCO material in form of 32 mm diameter and 2.5 mm thick was used to assemble a staggered magnet array. The period length is 5 mm and the magnet gap is 4 mm. To estimate the strength of a sinusoidal field and to optimize the end-pole design to minimize the first (i.e., electron angle) and second field integral (electron position), an energy-minimization method (EM-method) based on Bean's model to simulate the field trapped in the HTS-Block is introduced. In this paper, we focus on promoting the practical value of the EM-method simulation. Combining the experimental experience of a YBCO staggered undulator and the simulation experience based on the EM-method, we address some issues to enhance the efficacy of this undulator design. Pulsed magnets were characterized for use for injection in the top-up mode for Taiwan Photon Source (TPS). Two kicker magnets in vacuum were implemented to inject and to extract electron beams for the booster ring. Five septum and four kicker magnets of in-air type were provided for injection into a 3-GeV storage ring. All pulsed magnets are of home design, manufactured and assembled in National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center. To verify the quality of a magnetic field and its distribution, measurement systems including long-coil and search-coil systems were installed. The pulsed power supply was improved to gain exact stability. We report that through our shielding design, the maximum leakage field of the septum along the beam trajectory is less than 0.02% of the main field. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The septum magnet bends the injection beam before the kicker magnet. The septum magnet is located near the storage ring in the Taiwan Photon Source (TPS). As the space from the magnet wall to the vacuum chamber of the ring is less than 3 mm, the leakage field of the septum magnet thus influences the stability of the electron beam in the storage ring. The main field and the leakage field of a septum of the direct-drive type are compared to one of the eddy-current type. The effects of the vacuum chamber and \mu-metal are simulated with full-sine and half-sine current pulses with the OPERA-2D TR analysis module; measurement results are presented in this paper. In material research, the characteristics of novel materials vary greatly with the environment. A magnet with a strong field will be developed for an experimental station for resonant X-ray scattering to investigate the magnetic properties of materials. This magnet will be developed with high-temperature superconductor (HTS) bulk YBa2Cu3O7 and magnetized with a HTS coil magnet wound with 2G HTS wire. HTS (RE) BCO will be selected to construct the coil of this magnet. Both the bulk and coil magnets will be assembled on the same movable system. The bulk HTS magnet will provide flux density greater than 4 T with a gap 34 mm that can accommodate the sample holder of the experimental station. The bulk magnet will be cooled with cryocoolers to 29 K and the coil magnet to 4.2 K; the coil magnet is separable from the bulk magnet after the field is trapped. This study describes the design and testing of a superconducting solenoid magnet for soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (SXMCD) experiments at the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC). The superconducting solenoid magnet provides an uniform field of up to 8 T in a bore of 55 mm in diameter and 0.5 m long. The superconducting solenoid is operated in a 4.5-K liquid helium bath for reducing the vibration level during the experiments. The magnet and its cryostat are optimized to prevent magnet quenching and lower liquid helium consumption. The magnet quench test and magnetic field measurements are also performed. A compact three-pole superconducting magnet with an aluminum warm beam duct was designed and fabricated as an X-ray source in a 1.5 GeV Taiwan Light Source (TLS) or the 3 GeV Taiwan Photon Source (TPS). Three pairs of racetrack NbTi superconducting coils were connected to one main power supply to create a central field of over 6.5 T. Two low current trim power supplies were connected in parallel to the two side pairs of the coil to eliminate the first and second field integrals. The wavelength shifter magnet was cooled in a pool boiling helium bath. Helium boils off at 1.3 L/hr. The vapor-cooled current lead is used to pass the 350 A excitation current. The magnetic field strength was measured at room temperature using a Hall probe and a stretched wire system. The magnet was tested successfully to 308 A, at which the central field exceeded 6.5 T, and the peak field on coil was 8.2 T. Abstract: A 3.2T superconducting wiggler with a periodic length of 6cm and 32 poles was designed and fabricated as an X-ray source. The beam duct of this magnet is a semi-cold, ultra-high vacuum chamber that consists of an aluminum and stainless steel taper. The number of poles in this magnet design is even, to minimize the integral strengths of the multipole components. Two measurement systems—involving room-temperature and cryogenic Hall probes—were set up to measure the field of the superconducting wiggler. A cryogenic plant that supplied liquid helium and nitrogen to the superconducting wiggler has already been established. The performance of magnet construction is good and the commissioning of the superconducting wiggler in the storage ring has been successful. No trim coil compensation on the magnet is required to adjust the electron beam orbit. Furthermore, the electron beams exhibit no loss and remain highly stable after the superconducting wiggler has been quenched. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We have investigated the electronic and bonding structure using Fourier-transform infra-red (FT-IR) spectra and studied photoluminescence (PL) from micro-Raman spectra analysis of a-C:H:Si (Si:DLC) thin films deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) method. Tetramethylsilane [Si(CH3)4, TMS] vapour was used as Silicon precursor and a bias voltage of 400V was applied during deposition. It is observed from FT-IR spectra that with increasing TMS flow rate, the intensity of Si–Hn and C–Hn modes is increased significantly. PL study indicates that the PL is increased and that the PL peak position is shifted towards lower energy when the TMS flow rate increases gradually during deposition. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Electronic structures of the nanorods of RuO2 and IrO2 metallic oxides were investigated by x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM). O K-, Ru, and Ir L3-edge XANES results reveal that hybridization between O 2p and metal t2g orbitals is weaker in IrO2 than in RuO2. The enhancement of the tip-region SPEM intensities relative to those in the sidewall regions for both RuO2 and IrO2 nanorods is found to extend over a large energy range in contrast to those of carbon nanotubes and ZnO nanorods, which are confined to deep below and near the Fermi level, respectively. A 0.96 m with 16 poles superconducting wiggler is fabricated in-house at NSRRC. The wiggler produced a magnetic field of 3.1 T for a 61 mm period with a pole gap of 19 mm. Three 5-pole prototype magnets using various pole materials from low carbon steel, vanadium permendure steel and holmium are tested and measured to verify the magnetic field performance in the testing dewar. This work describes the design and construction of a magnet and cryostat system. The electronic structure and magnetic properties of Al-doped Fe3O4 films at various Al concentrations were investigated by Al and O K-edge x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and Fe L3,2-edge magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) measurements. The O K-edge XANES spectra reveal that the intensity of O 2p–Fe 3d hybridized states decreases linearly as the Al concentration increases, suggesting that nonmagnetic Al substitution reduces couplings of the O 2p with Fe 3d orbitals. The Fe L3-edge MCD spectra show that the intensities of MCD features decrease as the Al concentration increases, which suggests that Al substitution reduces the magnetic moments of Fe ions. Ni and Fe L[sub 3,2]-edge magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and Cr K-edge x-ray absorption near-edge structure measurements have been performed for the Py/Cr(t[sub Cr])/Py (Py=Ni[sub 80]Fe[sub 20]) trilayers with t[sub Cr]=5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 Å. The MCD asymmetry ratios in the Ni and FeL[sub 3]-edges spectra are found strongly affected by the thickness of the Cr layer. The moments of the Fe and Ni 3d states are found, respectively, to decrease and increase suddenly when t[sub Cr] increases beyond 20 Å. The measured magneto-optical Kerr effect hysteresis loops show a ferromagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic phase transition at about the same Cr-layer thickness. The transition of the magnetic property is found to correlate with the structural transition of the Cr spacer layer from a pseudomorphic fcc-like structure to a bcc structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As-grown and Zn-implanted wurtzite GaN samples have been studied by angle-dependent x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements at the N and Ga K-edges and the Ga L[SUB3]-edge. The angle dependence of the XANES spectra shows that the Ga-N bonds lying in the bilayer have lower energies than bonds along the c-axis, which can be attributed to the polar nature of the GaN film. The comparison of the Ga L[SUB3]-edge XANES spectra of as-grown and Zn-doped GaN reveals significant dopant induced enhancement of near-edge Ga d-derived states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
