Abstract

We report on a search for magnetic monopoles (MMs) produced in ultraperipheral Pb--Pb collisions during Run-1 of the LHC. The beam pipe surrounding the interaction region of the CMS experiment was exposed to 184.07 \textmu b$^{-1}$ of Pb--Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV center-of-mass energy per collision in December 2011, before being removed in 2013. It was scanned by the MoEDAL experiment using a SQUID magnetometer to search for trapped MMs. No MM signal was observed. The two distinctive features of this search are the use of a trapping volume very close to the collision point and ultra-high magnetic fields generated during the heavy-ion run that could produce MMs via the Schwinger effect. These two advantages allowed setting the first reliable, world-leading mass limits on MMs with high magnetic charge. In particular, the established limits are the strongest available in the range between 2 and 45 Dirac units, excluding MMs with masses of up to 80 GeV at 95\% confidence level., Comment: As accepted by PRL. 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

A search for highly electrically charged objects (HECOs) and magnetic monopoles is presented using 2.2 fb-1 of p - p collision data taken at a centre of mass energy (ECM) of 8 TeV by the MoEDAL detector during LHC's Run-1. The data were collected using MoEDAL's prototype Nuclear Track Detector array and the Trapping Detector array. The results are interpreted in terms of Drell-Yan pair production of stable HECO and monopole pairs with three spin hypotheses (0, 1/2 and 1). The search provides constraints on the direct production of magnetic monopoles carrying one to four Dirac magnetic charges (4gD) and with mass limits ranging from 590 GeV/c^2 to 1 TeV/c^2. Additionally, mass limits are placed on HECOs with charge in the range 10e to 180e, where e is the charge of an electron, for masses between 30 GeV/c^2 and 1 TeV/c^2.

Abstract

Schwinger showed that electrically-charged particles can be produced in a strong electric field by quantum tunnelling through the Coulomb barrier. By electromagnetic duality, if magnetic monopoles (MMs) exist, they would be produced by the same mechanism in a sufficiently strong magnetic field. Unique advantages of the Schwinger mechanism are that its rate can be calculated using semiclassical techniques without relying on perturbation theory, and the finite MM size and strong MM-photon coupling are expected to enhance their production. Pb-Pb heavy-ion collisions at the LHC produce the strongest known magnetic fields in the current Universe, and this article presents the first search for MM production by the Schwinger mechanism. It was conducted by the MoEDAL experiment during the 5.02 TeV/nucleon heavy-ion run at the LHC in November 2018, during which the MoEDAL trapping detectors (MMTs) were exposed to 0.235 nb$^{-1}$ of Pb-Pb collisions. The MMTs were scanned for the presence of magnetic charge using a SQUID magnetometer. MMs with Dirac charges 1$g_D$ $\leq$ $g$ $\leq$ 3$g_D$ and masses up to 75 GeV/c$^2$ were excluded by the analysis. Abstract

The MoEDAL trapping detector, consists of approximately 800 kg of aluminium volumes. It was exposed during Run-2 of the LHC program to 6.46 fb^-1 of 13 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHCb interaction point. Evidence for dyons (particles with electric and magnetic charge) captured in the trapping detector was sought by passing the aluminium volumes comprising the detector through a SQUID magnetometer. The presence of a trapped dyon would be signalled by a persistent current induced in the SQUID magnetometer. On the basis of a Drell-Yan production model, we exclude dyons with a magnetic charge ranging up to 5 Dirac charges, and an electric charge up to 200 times the fundamental electric charge for mass limits in the range 790 - 3130 GeV., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1903.08491

Abstract

MoEDAL is designed to identify new physics in the form of stable or pseudostable highly ionizing particles produced in high-energy Large Hadron Collider (LHC) collisions. Here we update our previous search for magnetic monopoles in Run 2 using the full trapping detector with almost four times more material and almost twice more integrated luminosity. For the first time at the LHC, the data were interpreted in terms of photon-fusion monopole direct production in addition to the Drell-Yan-like mechanism. The MoEDAL trapping detector, consisting of 794 kg of aluminum samples installed in the forward and lateral regions, was exposed to 4.0 fb$^{-1}$ of 13 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHCb interaction point and analyzed by searching for induced persistent currents after passage through a superconducting magnetometer. Magnetic charges equal to or above the Dirac charge are excluded in all samples. Monopole spins 0, 1/2 and 1 are considered and both velocity-independent and -dependent couplings are assumed. Abstract

We update our previous search for trapped magnetic monopoles in LHC Run 2 using nearly six times more integrated luminosity and including additional models for the interpretation of the data. The MoEDAL forward trapping detector, comprising 222~kg of aluminium samples, was exposed to 2.11~fb$^{-1}$ of 13 TeV proton-proton collisions near the LHCb interaction point and analysed by searching for induced persistent currents after passage through a superconducting magnetometer. Magnetic charges equal to the Dirac charge or above are excluded in all samples. The results are interpreted in Drell-Yan production models for monopoles with spins 0, 1/2 and 1: in addition to standard point-like couplings, we also consider couplings with momentum-dependent form factors. Abstract

MoEDAL is designed to identify new physics in the form of long-lived highly-ionising particles produced in high-energy LHC collisions. Its arrays of plastic nuclear-track detectors and aluminium trapping volumes provide two independent passive detection techniques. We present here the results of a first search for magnetic monopole production in 13 TeV proton-proton collisions using the trapping technique, extending a previous publication with 8 TeV data during LHC run-1. A total of 222 kg of MoEDAL trapping detector samples was exposed in the forward region and analysed by searching for induced persistent currents after passage through a superconducting magnetometer. Magnetic charges exceeding half the Dirac charge are excluded in all samples and limits are placed for the first time on the production of magnetic monopoles in 13 TeV $pp$ collisions. Abstract

Cognitive Reserve (CR) is a theoretical construct that influences the onset and course of cognitive and structural changes that occur with aging and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). There is a paucity of research that examines the relationship of CR and brain volumes in amnestic (aMCI) and nonamnestic (naMCI) separately. This study is a retrospective chart review of MCI patients who underwent neuropsychological evaluation and brain MRI with NeuroReader™ (NR). NR is an FDA-cleared software that standardizes MRI volumes to a control sample. Classifications of aMCI and naMCI were based on Petersen criteria. CR was measured as education, occupation, and word reading. Data analysis included bivariate correlations between CR, neuropsychological test scores, and NR-brain volumes by MCI subtype. The Benjamini–Hochberg method corrected for multiple comparisons. The sample included 91 participants with aMCI and 41 with naMCI. Within naMCI, positive correlations were observed between CR and whole brain volume, total gray matter, bifrontal, left parietal, left occipital, and bilateral cerebellum. Within aMCI, no significant correlations were observed between CR and brain volumes. Positive correlations with CR were observed in language, attention, and visual learning in both aMCI and naMCI groups. The current study adds to the minimal literature on CR and naMCI. Results revealed that CR is associated with volumetrics in naMCI only, though cognitive findings were similar in both MCI groups. Possible explanations include heterogeneous disease pathologies, disease stage, or a differential influence of CR on volumetrics in MCI. Abstract

Electrically charged particles can be created by the decay of strong enough electric fields, a phenomenon known as the Schwinger mechanism1. By electromagnetic duality, a sufficiently strong magnetic field would similarly produce magnetic monopoles, if they exist2. Magnetic monopoles are hypothetical fundamental particles that are predicted by several theories beyond the standard model3–7 but have never been experimentally detected. Searching for the existence of magnetic monopoles via the Schwinger mechanism has not yet been attempted, but it is advantageous, owing to the possibility of calculating its rate through semi-classical techniques without perturbation theory, as well as that the production of the magnetic monopoles should be enhanced by their finite size8,9 and strong coupling to photons2,10. Here we present a search for magnetic monopole production by the Schwinger mechanism in Pb–Pb heavy ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, producing the strongest known magnetic fields in the current Universe11. It was conducted by the MoEDAL experiment, whose trapping detectors were exposed to 0.235 per nanobarn, or approximately 1.8 × 109, of Pb–Pb collisions with 5.02-teraelectronvolt center-of-mass energy per collision in November 2018. A superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer scanned the trapping detectors of MoEDAL for the presence of magnetic charge, which would induce a persistent current in the SQUID. Magnetic monopoles with integer Dirac charges of 1, 2 and 3 and masses up to 75 gigaelectronvolts per speed of light squared were excluded by the analysis at the 95% confidence level. This provides a lower mass limit for finite-size magnetic monopoles from a collider search and greatly extends previous mass bounds.

Abstract

During LHC's Run-2 the MoEDAL experiment, the LHC's first dedicated search experiment, took over 6 fb^-1 of data at IP8, with p-p and Pb-Pb collisions, operating with 100% efficiency. The LHCC has endorsed the LoI of the MoEDAL Collaboration describing an exciting program to expand the search for Highly Ionizing Particles (HIPs) in p-p and heavy-ion collisions to include feebly ionizing and Long Lived Particle (LLP) messengers of new physics (NP) at LHC's RUN-3 and eventually HL-LHC. In 2021, as part of Phase-1 of the program, the baseline MoEDAL detector was approved by CERN for reinstallation for Run-3 with increased efficiency, lower threshold, a factor of 5 increase in instantaneous luminosity, and, a higher Ecm. MoEDAL will continue the search for HIP avatars of NP with an emphasis on the search for massive, single and multiply electrically charged avatars of BSM physics arising from, eg, supersymmetry, neutrino mass models, L-R symmetry, etc. As part of Phase-1 of the MoEDAL-MAPP project CERN also approved in 2021 the installation of the MoEDAL Apparatus for Penetrating Particles (MAPP) in the UA83 tunnel 100m away from IP8. The MAPP detector has sensitivity to feebly-interacting particles with charge, or effective charge, as low as 10^-3e. Additionally, the MAPP detector, in conjunction with MoEDAL's trapping detector, gives us a unique sensitivity to charged LLPs. MAPP also has some sensitivity to neutral LLPs. In Phase-2 of the project we will instal the MAPP-2 upgrade for the HL-LHC. We envisage that this detector will be deployed in the UGC1 gallery near to IP8. This phase of the experiment is designed to ensure that MoEDAL-MAPP's sensitivity to neutral LLP messengers of BSM physics is competitive and complementary to other planned projects in this arena. Abstract

During LHC’s Run-2 the MoEDAL experiment took 6.7 inv. fb of data at a centre-of-mass energy (Ecm) of 13 TeV with 100% efficiency. However, this was well short of the requested 10 inv. fb. In order to continue to push the search for highly ionizing avatars of new physics with the existing MoEDAL detector to higher Ecm (14 TeV) and significantly higher luminosity the MoEDAL Collaboration is requesting to take data as part of the LHC’s Run-3 program. This Technical Design Report is focused on the MoEDAL Program for Run-3 that involves the reinstallation of the MoEDAL Run-2 detector with minor changes required to improve the detector efficiency as well as adapt the detector for an upgraded LHCb-VELO region.

Abstract

We update our previous search for trapped magnetic monopoles in LHC Run 2 using nearly six times more integrated luminosity and including additional models for the interpretation of the data. The MoEDAL forward trapping detector, comprising 222 kg of aluminium samples, was exposed to 2.11 fb−1 of 13 TeV proton–proton collisions near the LHCb interaction point and analysed by searching for induced persistent currents after passage through a superconducting magnetometer. Magnetic charges equal to the Dirac charge or above are excluded in all samples. The results are interpreted in Drell–Yan production models for monopoles with spins 0, 1/2 and 1: in addition to standard point-like couplings, we also consider couplings with momentum-dependent form factors. The search provides the best current laboratory constraints for monopoles with magnetic charges ranging from two to five times the Dirac charge.

Abstract

MoEDAL is designed to identify new physics in the form of long-lived highly ionizing particles produced in high-energy LHC collisions. Its arrays of plastic nuclear-track detectors and aluminium trapping volumes provide two independent passive detection techniques. We present here the results of a first search for magnetic monopole production in 13 TeV proton-proton collisions using the trapping technique, extending a previous publication with 8 TeV data during LHC Run 1. A total of 222 kg of MoEDAL trapping detector samples was exposed in the forward region and analyzed by searching for induced persistent currents after passage through a superconducting magnetometer. Magnetic charges exceeding half the Dirac charge are excluded in all samples and limits are placed for the first time on the production of magnetic monopoles in 13 TeV pp collisions. The search probes mass ranges previously inaccessible to collider experiments for up to five times the Dirac charge.

Abstract

MoEDAL is designed to identify new physics in the form of stable or pseudostable highly ionizing particles produced in high-energy Large Hadron Collider (LHC) collisions. Here we update our previous search for magnetic monopoles in Run 2 using the full trapping detector with almost four times more material and almost twice more integrated luminosity. For the first time at the LHC, the data were interpreted in terms of photon-fusion monopole direct production in addition to the Drell-Yan-like mechanism. The MoEDAL trapping detector, consisting of 794 kg of aluminum samples installed in the forward and lateral regions, was exposed to 4.0 fb-1 of 13 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHCb interaction point and analyzed by searching for induced persistent currents after passage through a superconducting magnetometer. Magnetic charges equal to or above the Dirac charge are excluded in all samples. Monopole spins 0, and 1 are considered and both velocity-independent and-dependent couplings are assumed. This search provides the best current laboratory constraints for monopoles with magnetic charges ranging from two to five times the Dirac charge.

Abstract

MoEDAL is designed to identify new physics in the form of long-lived highly ionizing particles produced in high-energy LHC collisions. Its arrays of plastic nuclear-track detectors and aluminium trapping volumes provide two independent passive detection techniques. We present here the results of a first search for magnetic monopole production in 13 TeV proton-proton collisions using the trapping technique, extending a previous publication with 8 TeV data during LHC Run 1. A total of 222 kg of MoEDAL trapping detector samples was exposed in the forward region and analyzed by searching for induced persistent currents after passage through a superconducting magnetometer. Magnetic charges exceeding half the Dirac charge are excluded in all samples and limits are placed for the first time on the production of magnetic monopoles in 13 TeV pp collisions. The search probes mass ranges previously inaccessible to collider experiments for up to five times the Dirac charge.

Abstract

Glucose and its close metabolic derivatives were compared for their effectiveness in bringing about catabolite repression in Escherichia coli. The findings indicate that catabolite repression is established most rapidly when glucose-6-phosphate serves as source of carbon; they also demonstrate that regulation by catabolite repression is exerted at the level of transcription. Abstract

The components of pair distribution function in different directions with respect to the coordinate system defined by the simulation box are determined for Lennard-Jones fluid simulated using the Monte Carlo technique in cubic boxes of various size. The approach of Pratt and Haan is employed to analyze the distortion of isotropic fluid structure due to the periodic boundary conditions and qualitative agreement is found between the theoretical and simulated course of particular angular components of distribution function. The relation between the anisotropy of correlation functions and the system size dependency of residual energy and compressibility factor is analyzed. The finite size effects become significantly pronounced in systems with size lower than 5 particle diameters, especially if the length of the box-edge is equal to a non-integer multiple of molecular diameter. With increasing temperature the implicit finite size effects on fluid structure as well as on the thermodynamic properties become less important. The primary cause of the structure deformation lies in the short-range interparticle correlations and the long-range interactions are not important; therefore, the implicit finite size effects influence all kinds of atomistic simulations, including those using the interactions of finite range and in the molecular dynamics simulations. However, at present the simulated systems are usually of sufficiently large size and ignoring the implicit finite size does not lead to serious problems, except for the determination of surface properties using the inhomogeneous simulations which are more sensitive to the lateral dimension of simulation box. Nous avons déterminé les contributions directionnelles de la fonction de distribution par paire du fluide de Lennard-Jones, par simulation moléculaire de Monte Carlo dans des boîtes cubiques de différentes tailles. L’approche de Pratt et Haan est utilisée pour analyser la distorsion de la structure de fluide causée par les conditions périodiques; la théorie et les résultats de simulation sont en bon accord. Nous avons étudié la relation entre l’anisotropie des fonctions de corrélation et la dépendance vis-à-vis de la taille du système de l’énergie interne résiduelle et du facteur de compressibilité. Les effets de taille deviennent significatifs dans les systèmes dont la taille de la boîte est inférieure à 5 fois le diamètre des particules, en particulier si la longueur de la boîte est égale à un multiple non entier du diamètre moléculaire. Quand la température augmente, les effets de taille sur la structure du fluide et les propriétés thermodynamiques deviennent moins importants. La principale cause de la déformation de la structure réside dans les corrélations entre particules à courte portée, tandis que les interactions à longue portée n’ont pas d’influence. Les effets de taille du système affectent toutes les simulations atomistiques, y compris celles utilisant les interactions courtes portées et les simulations de dynamique moléculaire. Cependant, les systèmes simulés actuellement sont généralement de taille suffisamment grande, donc la taille finie n’engendre pas de problèmes, sauf pour la détermination des propriétés de surface par des simulations hétérogènes, qui sont sensibles à la dimension latérale de la boîte de simulation.

Abstract

The "Task Force Meeting on Decision Support Systems (DSS)" held at IIASA in June 1980 has stimulated some new thinking in this area of research in the MMT group (Management and Technology Research Area). The discussion pointed out the important role that DSS can play in assisting decision makers. DSS should be seen as a complicated socio-technical system for solving relevant problems in the wider social context. This paper is oriented towards technical aspects of DSS, but human factors have been taken into account as well. It contains some points of view of implementation; it reviews some basic functions which are to be performed by DSS and techniques which can simplify DSS design. A possible implementation structure based on computer network theory is presented, and in addition, some of the problems involved are discussed The author Jan Janecek participated in the IIASA Young Scientists Summer Program 1980. He was attached to the MMT Research Area for three months. This report is one of the results of his work during that period.
