Introduction: The lack of knowledge about denture hygiene can negatively affect their maintenance. On the other hand, good oral hygiene can reduce the chances of plaque accumulation. Objetive: To determine if there is a relationship between knowledge of hygiene and denture maintenance. Material and Methods: A questionnaire was applied to 67 patients who wore partial and/or total removable prostheses daily to evaluate their knowledge of denture hygiene. For the evaluation of denture maintenance, clinical inspection of the removable prosthesis was carried out using the Vigild criterion to observe the amount of plaque that was adhered to it. Data were statistically processed with Spearman's correlation test to determine the relationship between hygiene knowledge and denture maintenance. Resumen Objetivo Evaluar la diferencia del trazado cefalométrico manual con el digital en radiografías laterales de cráneo. Materiales y métodos Inicialmente se realizó un piloto para calibrar al investigador principal, en donde se analizaron 10 radiografías pertenecientes a cinco pacientes del Servicio de Radiología del Centro Odontológico de nuestra institución para evaluar la concordancia entre los dos evaluadores y establecer el tamaño de la muestra. Finalmente, se analizaron 78 radiografías cefalométricas de 39 pacientes, en las que se realizó el trazado cefalométrico de Steiner manual y digital. Esas radiografías se analizaron en una escala 1:1 y posteriormente se evaluó la diferencia de las mediciones mediante el análisis univariado, se determinó en mediana e intervalo intercuartil por separado. En el análisis bivariado, se aplicó la prueba de signo de rangos de Wilcoxon y muestras pareadas para determinar la diferencia de las mediciones cefalométricas de Steiner entre el tipo del análisis cefalométrico. El nivel de significancia se fijó en p Resultados No hubo diferencia significativa en la mayoría de las mediciones hechas de manera manual y digital, siendo el ángulo interincisal la única medición angular en la cual hubo diferencia significativa al obtener un resultado de p = 0,002. Mientras tanto, en las mediciones lineales, la única medición en la que hubo diferencia significativa fue en el segmento incisivo inferior – NB con p = 0,005. Conclusión No se encuentran diferencias significativas entre el trazado cefalométrico manual y el digital. No obstante, es importante tener en cuenta que la muestra o población evaluada es reducida para definir conclusiones.

AIM: To determine predictive indicators for dental health management of patients with different abilities, according to a new screening protocol. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was an observational, analytical, retrospective, cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of all patients with different abilities, diagnosed with autism, Down syndrome, cognitive deficit, cerebral palsy and others, who received care between 1999 and 2019 at the Oral Health Service of the Centro Ann Sullivan del Peru and met the inclusion criteria. Data were obtained from the clinical histories to determine the predictive indicators for managing dental care in these patients. A multivariate statistical analysis was performed using binary logistic regression test. The research project was evaluated by the Research Project Reviewing Committee and then referred to the Human Ethics Committee from a university, securing the relevant approvals. RESULTS: Of the 589 cases evaluated, mean age was 14.5 years, 67.9% were male; systemic diagnosis of different abilities was autism in 62%, the most frequent treatment was caries (52.1%); and final management of these patients was conscious in 96.4% of the cases. With regard to type of classification and horizon, 67.1% of the cases corresponded to classification A, with 35.95% of these in horizon I. With regard to diagnosis of different abilities, autism presented 40.2% of the cases in classification A and horizon I. A predictive equation of 97.1% probability of whether or not sedation was used was obtained. Regression analysis showed that this model has high sensitivity (100%) and low specificity (15%). CONCLUSION: Results show that the type of management for dental care was conscious in nearly all the cases dealt with. This was significantly influenced by the Classification and Horizon Screening Protocol indicator, which established the best predictive model for whether or not to use sedation. The model adequately classifies patients who do not require sedation.

espanolObjetivo: Describir la prevalencia de las manifestaciones bucales del raquitismo hipofosfatemico de pacientes atendidos en un hospital pediatrico de referencia peruano durante los anos 2012-2016. Material y Metodos: Se realizo un estudio tipo observacional, descriptivo, retrospectivo, transversal. Para la seleccion de la muestra se considero a los pacientes que acudieron a la consulta externa del Servicio de Odontoestomatologia y el Servicio de Genetica del Instituto Nacional de Salud del Nino, Lima, Peru; en el periodo comprendido entre los anos 2012-2016 y que presentaron como diagnostico Raquitismo Hipofosfatemico. El proyecto de investigacion fue evaluado por un Comite de Etica en Investigacion del servicio de salud. Se solicitaron las historias clinicas consignadas en una base de datos de la institucion de salud con el Codigo CIE E83.3, que corresponde a este diagnostico. Resultados: Fueron atendidos 15 ninos, de los cuales solo 10 fueron tratados en el Servicio Odontoestomatologia;siendo de estos 10 pacientes la distribucion de los datos obtenidos segun el objetivo propuesto. Se encontro mayor frecuencia de lesiones a nivel de tejido blando de gingivitis con 41.18%, a nivel de tejido oseo solo se presento un caso de quiste dentigero; y a nivel de tejido dental el 90% de los pacientes presento caries dental. Conclusion: Las manifestaciones bucales mas frecuentes del raquitismo hipofosfatemico de pacientes pediatricos atendidos en el Instituto Nacional de Salud del Nino (2012-2016), fueron la gingivitis y caries dental. EnglishObjective: To describe the prevalence of oral manifestations of hypophosphatemic rickets in patients treated in a Peruvian referral pediatric hospital during the years 2012-2016. Material and methods: An observational, descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study was carried out. The sample consisted of patients diagnosed with hypophosphatemic rickets who attended the outpatient clinic of the Stomatology Service and the Genetics Service of the National Institute of Child Health (INSN), Lima, Peru, between the years 2012-2016. The research project was assessed and approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Health Service. Medical records stored in a database of the health institution with the Code CIE E83.3, which corresponds to the diagnosis of Hypophosphatemic Rickets, were requested for the study. Results: Fifteen children received health care, of which only 10 were treated at the Stomatology Service. The distribution of the data was obtained from these 10 patients according to the proposed objective. A higher frequency of gingival lesions was found at the soft tissue level (41.18%); at the bone tissue level, only one case of dentigerous cyst was observed; and at the dental level, 90% of the patients had dental caries. Conclusion: The most frequent oral manifestations of hypophosphatemic rickets in pediatric patients treated at the National Institute of Child Health (2012-2016) were gingivitis and dental caries.

Objetive: To determine if the use of learning strategies and motivation influence the level of research skills in postgraduate students in dentistry of the Universidad de San Martin de Porres. Materials and Methods: 130 students were surveyed with a non-response rate of 16.07% which belong to the programs of masters and specialities, which were randomly selected. We used two questionnaires 1) learning strategies and motivation and 2) questionnaire to evaluate the rsearch skills which was previously validated. Oralantral comunication is a surgical complication that manifests itself with the connection of the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus . Its etiology is related multiple factors. For its diagnosis and treatment it is necessary evaluate clinical caracteristics like the symtoms associated with the oralantral communication, onset and the size it manifests itself. If the oralantral comunication is not corrected , inflamatory and infectuos conditions can occur in the maxillary sinus .

Second Life (SL) is an online virtual world with a social environment that may serve as a valuable learning supplement to traditional preclinical teaching methods. The educational advantages of this virtual world include immersion and interactivity. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of using 3-dimensional interactive platforms (3DIPs) designed in SL to that of traditional teaching methods for developing students' understanding of dental clinical situations that are difficult to simulate in real life. For this study, 3DIPs were developed to compare the acquisition of 3 learning objectives: understanding concepts, procedural aspects of interaction with the patient, and spatial interpretation of anatomical structure interactions. A representative dental topic, the use of a semiadjustable articulator, was selected. A quasi-experimental design with 2 groups and pretest-posttest comparison was used. The students in the control group received the conventional teaching established for the subject, which does not include SL experiences. The students in the experimental group received conventional instruction and had access to all 3DIPs for 4 weeks without limitation. The pretest and posttest consisted of a multiple-choice test with 20 questions. A Student t test was used to compare the test results of the groups (significance level α = 0.05). The posttest scores for the understanding of concepts and spatial interpretation were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group (P0.05). However, there was no statistically significant difference between groups in posttest scores on the topic of procedural aspects. Students who used cooperative methods for acquisition of knowledge were observed to be highly motivated. The results suggest that the SL environment helps students to understand anatomical interactions that are difficult to observe in real life, is attractive to students, and contains tools with high didactic potential.

To determine whether self-perceived oral health impact and satisfaction measure oral health in the same way as do clinical indicators in adults and older adults.The population consisted of adult patients aged 20 to 59 years receiving care at "Juan Pablo II" Health Care Centre and older adult patients aged 60 or more years from the home for the elderly "Virgen del Amor Hermoso", Lima, Peru. The indices Oral Impacts on Daily Performance (OIDP) and Oral Satisfaction Scale of 0-10 (OSS 0-10) were used to evaluate perceived impact of and satisfaction with oral health. In addition, the following internationally validated criteria established by the World Health Organization (WHO) were used as clinical indicators: Decayed-Missing-Filled Teeth (DMFT) Index, O'Leary's Hygiene Index, Community Periodontal Index, Motivation to Hygiene Index, Denture Situation Index, Need for Denture Index, Denture Hygiene Index and Oral Mucosal Lesion Index.Forty-four adults and 53 older adults participated. OIDP showed that the greatest perceived difficulty in daily performance was "eating and enjoying food" (adults: 77.3% and older adults: 79.2%). The OSS 0-10 showed that among adults, 43.1% were dissatisfied, 20.5% were neutral and 36.4% were satisfied, while among older adults, 45.3% were dissatisfied, 22.6% were neutral and 32.1% were satisfied. A statistically significant association was found between OSS 0-10 and 1. DMFT index in adults; 2. upper denture situation in older adults; and 3. denture hygiene in older adults. A highly significant inverse linear correlation was found between OIDP and OSS 0-10 in adults and older adults.The perceived impact of oral health does not have a demonstrable association with oral health problems when used as an instrument for measuring oral health status, whereas perceived satisfaction with oral health has a better association with the clinical indicators.

The aim of this study was to identify the prognostic factors related to the survival of patients with sarcomas of the jaw treated in the Dr. Eduardo Caceres Graziani National Institute for Neoplastic Diseases, Lima, Peru. Age, gender, delay in consultation, diagnostic delay, therapeutic delay, tumor size, tumor location, facial asymmetry, pain, treatment type, and histopathological diagnosis were all evaluated as possible prognostic factors that would influence survival in those with jaw sarcomas. In the analysis, the following was used: mortality tables, Kaplan-Meier's product-limit method, log-rank, and Breslow and Tarone-Ware tests; for the prognostic factors, Cox's Regression Model was used. The overall survival rate, with the patient being free from disease at two years, was 55%, and that at five years was 45%. In the independent analysis of the prognostic factors, four variables were statistically significant in influencing survival: gender (p = 0.043), histopathologic diagnosis (p = 0.019), tumor location (p = 0.019), and treatment type (p = 0.030). According to Cox's Regression Model for the multivariate analysis, statistically significant prognostic factors were: gender (p = 0.086), tumor location (p = 0.020), and treatment type (p = 0.092). Thus, the variables of gender, tumor location, and treatment type were determined to be predictive factors for prognosis of survival.

Aims and Objectives: This study aims to compare the remineralizing effect of casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) and fluoride varnish (FV) on the body of carious lesions in surface enamel. Materials and Methods: Two 3 mm × 3 mm areas on 37 samples of recently extracted human tooth enamel were demineralized to create artificial early carious lesions on the enamel following the methodology described by ten Cate and Duijsters. The areas were assigned randomly to two groups on which either CPP-ACP or FV were applied, after which they were subjected to a pH-cycling model to simulate intraoral conditions. Then samples were prepared for evaluation under a polarized light microscope. Data were analyzed using Student's t-test for related groups, with the SPSS statistical package. Results: No statistically significant difference was found in the depth of the body of the lesions between groups following 10 days of pH cycling. Conclusion: It was concluded that both therapeutic systems provide preventive and ultrastructural restorative treatment options which could be included in health-care policies for preventing early carious lesions.

La enfermedad de manos, pies y boca es una infección enteroviral producida por el Coxsackie virus, generalmente serotipo A16, que afecta principalmente a niños, caracterizada por la aparición de vesículas en las zonas palmoplantares y en la mucosa oral. Se reporta el caso de una paciente mujer de 25 años de edad que presentaba erupciones vesiculares típicas en la piel y en boca, úlceras dolorosas en lengua, mucosa de carrillo y labio superior. Se discute el diagnóstico diferencial y se enfatiza la necesidad de establecer un diagnóstico temprano así como la importancia de educar al paciente y sus familiares para evitar el desarrollo de brotes epidémicos.

PURPOSE To assess the long-term behavior of wedge-shaped implants and evaluate the influence of the associated risk factors on implant survival rates. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective review of clinical records of patients treated with wedge-shaped implants between 1992 and 2011 was conducted. Data on patient sex, age, smoking habits, and history of periodontitis; details of implant length, diameter, angle, and location; and data on surgical, reconstructive, and prosthetic procedures, and systemic disease were selected for analysis. RESULTS A total of 1,169 implants placed in 154 patients (mean age 55.17 ± 11.33 years) were evaluated. Women received 637 implants, and men received 532 implants; 60.4% were placed in patients who were undergoing periodontal maintenance care, 17.9% in smokers, 17.7% in hypertensive patients, 5.7% in diabetic patients, and 4.4% in cardiac patients. The mean overall survival for implants was 194.26 ± 9.91 months. Seventy-three implants were lost: 3 before implant loading and 70 after loading. The cumulative survival rates at 5 and 10 years were 96.6% (confidence interval [CI]: 95.5% to 97.7%) and 91.8% (CI: 90.1% to 94.1%), respectively. Univariate analysis indicated tobacco smoking (P = .014) and implant location (P < .001) as significant risk factors for implant failure. The multivariate analysis showed tobacco smoking (P = .016), location (P = .001), and male sex (P = .038) as significant, and the latter factor was associated with previous periodontal disease. CONCLUSIONS Overall survival of the wedge-shaped implant showed good long-term results. Male sex, tobacco smoking, and posterior maxillary location were associated with a greater risk of implant failure.

The purpose of this study was to determine the survival and prognostic factors of patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) of the oral cavity and maxillofacial region. Retrospectively, the clinical records of patients with a primary diagnosis of DLBCL of the oral cavity and maxillofacial region treated at the A.C. Camargo Hospital for Cancer, São Paulo, Brazil, between January 1980 and December 2005 were evaluated to determine (A) overall survival (OS) at 2 and 5 years and the individual survival percentage for each possible prognostic factor by means of the actuarial technique (also known as mortality tables), and the Kaplan Meier product limit method (which provided the survival value curves for each possible prognostic factor); (B) prognostic factors subject to univariate evaluation with the log-rank test (also known as Mantel-Cox), and multivariate analysis with Cox's regression model (all the variables together). The data were considered significant at p ≤ 0.05. From 1980 to 2005, 3513 new cases of lymphomas were treated, of which 151 (4.3%) occurred in the oral cavity and maxillofacial region. Of these 151 lesions, 48 were diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, with 64% for OS at 2 years and 45% for OS at 5 years. Of the variables studied as possible prognostic factors, multivariate analysis found the following variables have statistically significant values: age (p = 0.042), clinical stage (p = 0.007) and performance status (p = 0.031). These data suggest that patients have a higher risk of mortality if they are older, at a later clinical stage, and have a higher performance status.

Objective: To identify the overall survival and prognostic factors of malignant lymphoma of the oral cavity and the maxillofacial region. Study Design: Clinical records data were obtained in order to determine overall survival at 2 and 5 years, the individual survival percentage of each possible prognostic factor with the actuarial technique, and the survival regarding the possible prognostic factors with the actuarial technique and the Log-rank and Cox's regression tests. Results: Of 151 subjects, an overall survival was 60% at 2 years, and 45% at 5 years. The multivariate analysis demonstrated statistically significant differences for clinical stage (p=0.002), extranodal involvement (p=0.030), presence of human immunodeficiency virus (p=0.032), and presence of Epstein-Barr virus (p=0.010). Conclusion: The advanced clinical stage and the larger number of involved extranodular sites are related to a lower overall survival, as well as, the presence of previous infections such as the human immunodeficiency and the Epstein-Barr virus.

Objective: To determine the epidemiological profile of malignant melanoma cases treated at the National Institute for Neoplastic Diseases “Dr. Eduardo Caceres Graziani” (INEN) over the period 1952 to 2008. Study Design: All clinical records with complete data of patients presenting a histopathological diagnosis of malignant melanoma of the oral cavity were reviewed. Data such as age, gender, location, tumor size, disease length, presence of metastasis, treatment received and year of admission were recorded. Results: During the study period 97 cases were found. The average age of patients was 52.85±1.6 years old mostly between 50 and 59 years old; the predominant gender was the female. The most common location was the palate and there was 58.8% of cases with a tumor size bigger than or equal to 4 cm. The length of the disease in 38.1% of the cases was longer than a year and in great part of the cases (69.1%) there was no metastasis. The treatment of choice was the surgery plus radiotherapy in 38.1% of the cases. According to the admission date it was also noted that the number of cases is increasing. Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate a late diagnosis and an increasing frequency of this neoplasia in the oral cavity. Key words: Melanoma, oral cavity, epidemiology.

Objective: Analysis of the clinical characteristics of patients with Sarcomas of the Jaws treated in the “Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplasicas. Dr. Eduardo Caceres Graziani” from 1952-2007. Study Design: Review of 155 clinical records of patients with Sarcomas of the Jaws and record of age, gender, size, location, clinical symptoms and signs, histopathological diagnoses and type of treatment. The data obtained were analyzed by means of Student’s statistical t-test, Fisher and Friedman’s test. Results: Analysis of 155 Sarcomas of the Jaws. The average age of patients was 36.8 years old (range: 1-80 years); the female gender was the most frequent (52.9%); the average tumor size was 5.5 cm; in upper jaw 54.84% occurred and 45.16% in the lower jaw; the predominant sign was facial asymmetry (87.74%) and the predominant symptom: pain (63.23%). The most frequent diagnosis was Osteosarcoma 50.3% followed by Chondrosarcoma 18%. Surgery plus radiation therapy was the treatment type of choice with 21.94% of cases. Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate the delayed diagnosis and facial asymmetry and pain appear as the most important events for the diagnosis of Sarcomas of the Jaws. Rev Estomatol Herediana. 2007; 17(2):76-83. RESUMEN El granuloma central de celulas gigantes (GCCG) es una lesion osea benigna de los maxilares. Debido a su naturaleza localmente destructiva y a su alta recurrencia su tratamiento es muy complejo, requiriendo de procedimientos quirurgicos repetitivos cuyos beneficios han sido cuestionados por que dejan secuelas esteticas y funcionales importantes. Una alternativa de tratamiento efectivo no quirurgico es la administracion intralesional de corticoide. Se presenta un caso de GCCG en un nino de 9 anos, localizado en la sinfisis mandibular, tratado exitosamente con triamcinolona intralesional. Se muestran la secuencia de cambios radiograficos que ocurren durante la administracion del corticoide y se discute la importancia del control periodico del cortisol plasmatico, con la finalidad de detectar y tratar oportunamente la hipofuncion del eje hipotalamo-hipofisis-suprarrenal producida por esta terapia.
