31. Schooling Experiences and Educational Outcomes of Latinx Secondary School Students Living at the Intersections of Multiple Social Constructs

Abstract

Based on the critical quantitative intersectionality framework, this study examined the relationships between Latinx students' multiple intersecting social categorizations (i.e., gender, ethnicity, home language, socioeconomic status [SES], immigration status), their diverse schooling experiences, and educational outcomes. This study found that specific ethnic backgrounds for Latinxs were significantly associated with both their schooling experiences and educational outcomes. Latinxs' SES was a critical factor in creating the intersectional effects associated with other social constructs for schooling experiences and educational outcomes. Living in poverty created greater challenges in experiencing school suspension for Latinos compared with their Latina counterparts.

38. The Schooling Experiences and Aspirations of Students Belonging to Intersecting Marginalisations Based on Race or Ethnicity, Sexuality, and Socioeconomic Status

Abstract

This study examined how social constructs of race or ethnicity, sexuality, and socioeconomic status (SES) are multiplicatively associated with high school students' schooling experiences and aspirations. Using a critical quantitative intersectionality framework to analyse data from the 2016 Minnesota Student Survey, this study found that the estimated perceptions of care from adults among American Indian/Alaska Native students who are both LGBTQ and free or reduced lunch (FRL)-eligible were the lowest across different groups, and that these students were also the most likely to experience exclusion by their peers. Among Asian/Pacific Islander students, sexuality was found to be a moderating factor in the influence of higher SES on plans to pursue post-secondary education. Implications for policy, leadership, and practice are discussed.

44. The Efficacy of Different Types of Metalinguistic Information in L2 Written Corrective Feedback

Abstract

The study investigates whether differences in metalinguistic information contained in written corrective feedback (CF) mediate its effectiveness for second language (L2) development. To address this, metalinguistic CF was distinguished into three types in terms of how specific its metalinguistic information was. They were then compared among themselves and with non-metalinguistic direct CF in their efficacy for short-and long-term development of explicit and implicit L2 knowledge. The target features for written CF were the English articles, and explicit and implicit knowledge were measured by the error correction test and dictogloss writings by 93 EFL learners respectively. The results suggest that, for both explicit and implicit L2 knowledge, metalinguistic CF was beneficial for short-term development only when it had high levels of specific information while it was effective for long-term development regardless of its type. The findings are discussed from the perspective of SLA theory, and their pedagogical implications and suggestions for future research are put forth.

45. Belongingness and National Belonging among Youth in Hong Kong

Abstract

This study examined the multiplicative associations of the social categories of ethnicity (Hong Kong Chinese, mainland Chinese, or ethnic minorities), gender, and socioeconomic status (SES) with overall belongingness (to one's self, personal networks, and society) and national belonging to China among youth (aged 18-24 years) in Hong Kong. Our analysis revealed similar levels of overall belongingness and national belonging among ethnic minority youth relative to Hong Kong Chinese youth. The intersectionality of mainland Chinese female youth determined a higher degree of belongingness compared with their male counterparts and Hong Kong Chinese female youth. Although SES was positively associated with belongingness, it was not significantly associated with national belonging to China. We provided explanations of these patterns and recommends policy strategies to strengthen individual and national belongingness.
