This paper details the design and implementation of an efficient 4-kW bidirectional converter with a wide load range, based on a three-phase LCC resonant converter operated in a continuous conduction model, which has a number of advantages pertaining to a bidirectional power supply. The voltage boost-up function yields a high voltage gain without increasing the transformer turn ratio. The high switching frequency, which is achievable by using the soft-switching condition and multiphase operation, decreases the output ripple and helps minimize the size of the output filter, as the requirement for a filter changes after the power flow. Moreover, this reduction in the size of the filters yields economic advantages. In addition, because of the synchronous rectifier operation employed during switching, the conduction loss in the rectifier diode of the proposed converter is low. The direction of the output power can be changed easily, using phase control. The implemented power converter is connected to a 320-V rated generator on one side and 28-V lead-acid batteries on the other side. The functionality of the proposed converter is verified in experiments. We confirmed the high performance of the developed converter in terms of efficiency (92.2%), operable load range (0–12.5 A in step-up, and 0–142 A in step-down), and voltage ripple (0.05%). In this paper, the detailed design of an ion pump power supply is presented. The ion pump power supply was designed based on an LCC resonant topology with high switching frequency to take advantage of a smaller transformer for isolation. Because the proposed ion pump power supply has a 7-kV, 50-mA specification, high-voltage insulation is required. In order to secure insulation reliability, the power supply was designed with eight separate transformers that share primary turns. The spacing between the primary turns and secondary turns allows for increases in the leakage inductance and parasitic capacitance of the transformer. A compact design can be achieved using the parasitic component generated by the proposed design as the resonant parameters of the LCC resonant converter. In addition, based on a trapezoidal approximation of the LCC resonant converter, the resonant parameters are designed to have trapezoidal shapes of the resonant current in order to reduce conduction loss. This paper describes the circuit of a capacitor charger for a solid-state Marx modulator. A high-efficiency LCC resonant inverter is proposed for the simultaneous charging of many capacitors in parallel using a multistage transformer and rectifier. Using a high-voltage insulation cable, the charging loop, which represents the primary winding of transformer, is implemented to transfer the power from the resonant inverter to each stage. In addition to the simultaneous charging of separate capacitors, the advantages of the proposed circuit and structure include compact design and reliable insulation performance against high-voltage pulses. Based on the relevant approximation, the simplified analysis of an LCC resonant converter with a trapezoidal shape of resonant current is provided and a 50-kW high-voltage capacitor charger is designed for a 40-kV solid-state Marx modulator. The power stage, which consists of a transformer with four voltage-doubled rectifiers, is designed, and six power stages are configured for generating a pulse output of 40 kV. The detailed implementation of the multistage transformer and rectifier is presented in accordance with the design requirements of a high voltage modulator. Finally, the developed charger achieves 96% of the maximum efficiency and 0.96 of the maximum power factor. This study presents a simplified design for a solid state pulsed power modulator (SSPPM) based on a power cell structure. Similar to the Marx generator, the power cell structure has advantages such as reliability and modularity. In addition, the proposed SSPPM includes a capacitor charger that is simple and compact. The operating principle of, and the design considerations taken for, the SSPPM are discussed from a practical viewpoint. Based on a reasonable approximation, simplified design equations are developed for a capacitor charger and a high-voltage pulse-switching part, which are comprised of an LCC resonant converter and a power stage, respectively. Accordingly, detailed design procedures are proposed to develop the SSPPM with the following specifications: 40 kV, 20 A, 300 μs, 200 Hz, and 50 kW. The experimental results verify the specifications at the rated operating condition with an efficiency of 92.4%, and also confirm reliable arc-protection performance. Finally, the proposed design methodology, which utilizes simplified equations, can be used for designing an SSPPM based on the power cell structure for extensive applications. This paper proposes a new gate driving circuit for the solid-state pulsed power modulator (SSPPM) based on semiconductor devices. The proposed circuit can be easily implemented by applying a short gate signal to the bypass insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT), i.e., switches connected in parallel with the load instead of a pull-down resistor. The IGBT_BPs are turned on at the end-point of the pulse. It can quickly discharge the pulse voltage applied to the load. In addition, it can operate as bypass diode, which is used to protect the semiconductor switches when the gate signal malfunctions, by using the antiparallel diode of the IGBT. Moreover, power loss in the pull-down resistor used to achieve fast falling pulses can be eliminated by turning off the IGBT while applying the pulse state. Thus, the proposed circuit can be used for implementing SSPPM with small values of falling time and high efficiency. This paper describes a high-frequency pulsed-power generator for various industrial applications such as water treatment, food and medical apparatus for sterilization, or polluted gas treatment. The system is made of silicon-controlled rectifier as a main trigger switch, capacitors, two-stage magnetic pulse compression stages, and a linear transformer to generate a maximum of 120-kV, 5-kA pulse. The parameters obtained through the development are: output voltage: 120 kV (maximum), pulse repetition ration: 300 pulse per second, pulsewidth: 0.25~\mu \texts , and mean power: 30 kW. This paper describes the development of a 50-kV 100-kW cathode power supply (CPS) for the operation of a 30-kW 95-GHz gyrotron. For stable operation of the gyrotron, the requirements of CPS include low output voltage ripple and low arc energy less than 1% and 10 J, respectively. Depending on required specifications, a three-phase series-parallel resonant converter (SPRC) is proposed for designing CPS. In addition to high-efficiency performance of SPRC, three-phase operation provides the reduction of the output voltage ripple through a minimized output filter component that is closely related to the arc energy. For allowing symmetrical resonant current from three-phase resonant inverter, the high-voltage transformers are configured as star connection with floated neutral node. This facilitates balanced voltage on each secondary winding. In addition, distinctive design of the high-voltage rectifier is introduced, taking into consideration the effective series stacking of diodes by means of the parallel resonant capacitor. In particular, the implementation of the high-voltage part including transformer and rectifier is presented in detail. For providing high power density and high reliability, effective methods for winding the high-voltage transformer and stacking rectifier diodes are discussed. Finally, the developed CPS achieves 95.5% of maximum efficiency, 0.92 of maximum power factor, 500 W/liter of power density, 0.6% of output voltage ripple, with 8.3-J arc energy. This paper describes the design and analysis of a 42-kW (14 kV, 3 A) high-voltage power supply for a 30-kW industrial magnetron drive. The design is based on a series resonant converter in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) to take advantage of both the superior arc protection stemming from the current source characteristics and the high power density owing to the use of parasitic elements such as the leakage inductance in the high-voltage transformer. The detailed design procedure for the resonant tank and high-voltage transformer with respect to the input and output specifications is described on the basis of a simplified analysis of the DCM series resonant converter. Special considerations for designing high-power high-voltage power supplies are provided, such as series stacking of diodes for a voltage doubling rectifier and insulation between each winding of the high-voltage transformer. In addition, a comparative study using theoretical equations, simulation, and experimental results was carried out. This study yielded the output voltage and current characteristics at different switching frequencies and verified the advantages of this topology, such as arc protection without an additional protection circuit and high efficiency due to zero-current or zero-voltage switching. Moreover, the parallel operation of two converters with phase shifted gating signal is proposed to reduce the output current ripple and increase power capability for higher power magnetron drive. Additionally, the design considerations of two auxiliary power supplies (a filament power supply: 15 V, 150 A and a magnet power supply: 50 V, 5 A) are also provided and optimized for effective driving industrial magnetron. This paper proposes a solid-state pulsed power modulator (PPM) with fast rising/falling time and high repetition rates to drive pockels cells. Since the proposed circuit is based on the modular structure using silicon carbide (SiC) metal–oxide silicon field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) for bypass devices as well as for main switches, it can achieve fast switching speed and high reliability. In addition, by a control scheme employing the voltage difference, the proposed circuit can accomplish a high repetition rate and short pulsewidth. Design and implementation of 1.8-kV PPMs with repetition rate of 1 MHz and rising/falling time below 6 ns are presented. This article describes the compact solid-state Marx modulator (SSMM) with a fast rising time and a short pulsewidth based on the modular structure. By stacking of the TO-263-7 packaged silicon carbide mosfets having high voltage and fast switching capabilities, the designed circuit consists of three components, including the Marx capacitor, an on switch for applying pulse to the load, and an off switch to pull down the pulse. The off switch connected in parallel with load is chosen as a mosfet instead of a diode that is used in the conventional Marx generator. Because the off switch provides a discharging path for the stored energy on the parasitic capacitance, it is highly related to the fast falling time. In order to provide complementary driving signal and power for on/off switches, the simple control algorithm with a minimum component count and a reliable drive circuit against the noise are proposed. In addition, the synchronization of all the gate signals and a compact configuration for minimizing the stray inductance are essential to shorten the rising, falling, and pulsewidth. Based on the proposed circuit, the following specifications of the developed SSMM are achieved: the output voltage of 10 kV, the pulsewidth of less than 50 ns, and the rising and falling times of less than 15 ns. This letter proposes a high output voltage dc–dc converter topology with series stacked converter modules. To implement the proposed modular dc–dc converter structure, output voltage balancing of the modules and simplification of the control circuitry were considered the major design objectives. To achieve voltage balancing between the modules, we proposed a split-secondary transformer winding structure and distributed connections to the rectifier circuit blocks. Each transformer includes two secondary windings, with each wire pair connected to a different rectifier circuit. Consequently, one rectifier receives ac power simultaneously by sharing the secondary windings fed from two different transformers. The proposed method was verified using a modular LCC resonant converter, which is widely employed in high-voltage applications. As a result, the control circuit was simplified by using a single controller to regulate the total output voltage and by applying a compact sensing circuit referenced to the output voltage of the module placed at the lowest grounding point. This article describes a modification and an experiment conducted on a solid-state pulsed power modulator (SSPPM) for medical linear particle accelerator (LINAC) applications. Depending on the operating condition of the magnetron, an existing design of an insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT)-based modulator is modified, from a positive pulse generator to a negative pulse generator. The design of the gate driver circuit of the pulse discharging IGBTs is also slightly changed to secure reliability against the arc condition. The developed modulator has the following maximum output—pulse voltage of −40 kV, pulse current of −100 A, pulsewidth of 5 μs, and pulse repetition rate of 250 Hz. By adapting the proposed design to the pulsed power modulator for driving the magnetron, high peak and average power densities of 43 kW/L and 48.9 W/L, respectively, can be achieved. The experimental results from various tests conducted using a resistor load, including a rated operation and an arc protection, verify the robustness and utility of the developed SSPPM for medical LINAC applications. An experiment using a 9.3-GHz 1.7-MW X-band magnetron is also conducted. In this paper, a 25-kW bipolar pulsed-power supply for strategic mineral exploration has been described. A 500-V, 12.5-A unit module consisting of a highly efficient LCC resonant converter and a full-bridge-based bipolar pulse-switching unit is designed. The LCC resonant converter has a trapezoidal-shaped resonant current for reduced conduction loss. For achieving high power density, the leakage inductance of the transformer is used as resonant inductance without an external inductor. Moreover, the designed gate drive circuit based on the repetitive short pulse is proposed to operate the frequency range from dc to 8 kHz and reduce the size of the gate transformer. Four modules are connected in series and parallel in order to operate the power supply in either loop mode or grounded dipole mode. Depending on the load condition, the pulse power source capable of delivering the required high voltage and low current (2 kV, 12.5 A) or low voltage and high current (500 V, 50 A) is operated either in grounded dipole mode or loop mode, respectively. In order to satisfy the output voltage balancing of the four modules, the third wire is wound to compensate for the transformer of the LCC resonant converter. This paper proposes a flyback-circuit-based design of a trigger circuit for a high-power gas switch. By incorporating a flyback circuit in a high-power gas switch, it is possible to generate a high step-up ratio and high-voltage pulse by using a transformer. Furthermore, simple trigger circuit having the minimum possible number of components (transformer and switch) can be realized. When an inductor is used as an energy storage element, energy is stored as a current source, and thus, the element can operate reliably when low impedance exists between the trigger node of the switch after triggering. According to the fundamental operating principle of a flyback circuit, the proposed trigger circuit is designed considering the maximum trigger voltage and energy required for a high-power gas switch. To verify the proposed design procedure and feasibility of the trigger circuit, a compact trigger circuit (7.5 kV, 1.3 mJ/pulse) is simulated using the PSpice program and implemented. Based on this compact circuit, a trigger circuit (20 kV, 100 mJ/pulse) for a triggered vacuum switch (TVS) is developed, and the tests with an actual TVS (3.3 kJ) are carried out. This paper describes a bipolar pulsed power supply for strategic mineral exploration. Depending on the operating conditions, the bipolar pulsed power supply is capable of delivering the required high voltage and low current or low voltage and high current when operated, respectively, in either the grounded dipole mode or the loop mode. Based on a 500-V 12.5-A unit module, series and parallel connections of four modules are configured to satisfy both the grounded dipole mode (2000 V) and the loop mode (50 A), respectively. A unit module comprising an LCC resonant converter and a full-bridge-based bipolar pulse-switching unit is designed. In order to achieve high power density, the leakage inductance of the transformer is used as a resonant inductor in place of an external inductor. Accordingly, the resonant tank parameters are designed to give the resonant current a trapezoidal shape to reduce conduction loss and provide high efficiency. In addition, a simple gate-driving algorithm that uses the repetitive short pulse to cover the frequency range from dc to 8 kHz is proposed to allow the compact design of a minimized gate transformer. In this paper, the detailed design of the resonant circuit and the transformer of a unit module is described, and the operation is verified through simulation and experimental results. Conventional power supply systems for xenon lamps have only limited applicability in sintering, because sintering needs to drive the lamp itself as well as enable instantaneous and strong discharge of voltage and current for generating intense light. This implies that, for sintering applications, a method should be developed that would enable instantaneous and strong discharge of energy. In this paper, we propose a new xenon lamp sintering system with an additional capacitor charger and bank. The proposed system features three power supplies. Two power supplies, called the trigger and the simmer, ionize gaseous xenon using a 23-kV trigger pulse output and sustain the ionized xenon gas using a 2.5-kW simmer power supply. The used trigger is also specially designed to conduct high current through its transformer, and it makes the proposed system an outstanding high voltage blocking capability. Another 36-kW power supply charges a 130-mF capacitor bank with a high-efficiency resonant converter. In addition, some components such as the simmer blocking diode and the trigger output capacitor are introduced, because combining different power supplies causes operational problems. These components are analyzed with some circuits that show its features, and finally, the validity of the suggested system was confirmed in two steps. First, the simmer power supply and the capacitor charger were tested for the rated operating performance by using a resistive load condition. As a result, the rated operation of the simmer power supply was confirmed under the 2.5-kW output condition, and the efficiency of the capacitor charger was found to be greater than 96% at the rated 36-kW rated load condition. In addition, a pulse discharge current of 900 A was also observed with the equivalent resistor load through a pulsed discharge experiment of the capacitor bank, which was charged at 1500 V. The trigger power supply, whose equivalent resistive load was difficult to realize, was experimented directly using the real xenon lamp to check the stable trigger operation of the xenon lamp at its 23-kV output pulse voltage. After the verification using the resistive load condition, the real operation and performance of the combined xenon lamp power supply system that includes three kinds of power supplies were finally tested and verified by using the actual xenon lamp as a total system. This paper presents the design and experimental results of the 36-kW pulsed-power supply for the xenon flash lamp. The continuous conduction mode series-parallel resonant converter is modified. This means that not only the few hundred kilohertz of high switching frequency is introduced to replace the resonant inductor with the leakage inductor of transformer but also the high output current is accomplished by using three-phase delta-connected transformers. In addition, the snubber capacitor of the inverter switches and the power factor correction module is both omitted in the compact structure. Although these main components have changed, the efficiency and power factor of the rated dummy load reach 96% and 0.96%, respectively. Within 36-kW average power, the proposed pulsed-power supply can generate as versatile combination of output pulse. For example, it can generate 20-ms pulse with 1-Hz repetition rate or generate 1-ms pulse with 20-Hz repetition rate. The used insulated gate bipolar transistor is protected from the turn-OFF peak voltage by the snubber circuit, and the effect of the snubber circuit is shown at the actual load condition. This paper presents the design and implementation of a 40-kV, 20-kJ/s high-voltage capacitor charger based on a series/parallel resonant converter. The inclusion of the parallel resonant capacitor component in this circuit results in the production of a trapezoidal resonant current, which reduces conduction loss. This capacitor is practically realized as a part of the balancing network of the high-voltage rectifiers in the secondary side of the circuit. Particular attention in this paper is paid to the high-voltage transformer, which must be carefully designed to provide the required functionality without negative impact on the resonant circuit. A PSpice simulation has been used to prove that the proposed control method for the circuit is valid. This is supported with the experimental results, which verify that the operation of the circuit is as expected and that the converter is able to meet all the design criteria with an efficiency of up to 96%. This paper describes the design and implementation of a three-phase resonant converter with low ripple and high control accuracy. Based on a three-phase LCC-type resonant converter—which has advantages of low ripple, high-efficiency, and high-power density compared with a single-phase converter—a high-voltage power supply with low ripple (<0.1%) was designed. In addition to the general merits of an LCC-type resonant converter operating at continuous conduction mode—including soft switching, low conduction loss, and current source characteristics—the proposed scheme uses only one phase under a light-load condition by having different leg designs of the gate drive circuit and snubber parameters. This allows the design to overcome the operational constraints of the general LCC-type resonant converter. The distinctive design of the three-phase converter structure provides high efficiency and low ripple not only during rated operation, but also under light-load conditions. In order to analyze the high performance of the proposed scheme from no load to rated load, a PSPICE simulation was carried out. Comparison results with a conventional LCC-type resonant converter based on a single-phase structure are analyzed from the viewpoints of output ripple, losses, and operable load range. Using the proposed converter, a 20-kV, 20-kW high-voltage dc power supply design and implementation was presented with a superior gate drive circuit. Finally, the superiority of the proposed converter was verified through a simulation and experimental results. This paper describes the design, implementation, and comparison of high-voltage capacitor chargers for a solid-state pulsed power modulator (SSPPM). The three different converter topologies are a series resonant converter operating at a discontinuous conduction mode with switching frequency control (SRC_DCM_SFC), a series resonant converter operating at a continuous conduction mode with phase shifted pulse width modulation control (SRC_CCM_PSPWMC), and a series–parallel resonant converter operating at the CCM with SFC (SPRC_CCM_SFC). On the basis of these converter topologies, 10\-kW\rm{average} high-voltage capacitor chargers are designed for the three types of SSPPMs, which have the following maximum output specifications: 1) SRC_DCM_SFC: 60 kV, 300 A, 3 kpps, and 50 \mus; 2) SRC_CCM_PSPWMC: 10 kV, 50 A, 50 kpps, and 10 \mus; and 3) SPRC_CCM_SFC: 40 kV, 150 A, 7 kpps, and 10 \mus. Although the pulse output specifications are different, it is worth comparing the resonant inverter topologies and the control methods from the viewpoint of the losses, control characteristics, and merits and demerits of the high-voltage capacitor chargers. From the analysis and investigation of the three resonant inverters, the design procedure, including the determination of the resonant tank parameters, is provided, which considers the design of the high-voltage capacitor charger. PSPICE simulation is used to elucidate the effects of the resonant tank structure and its parameters, and the resonant current waveform and losses of the Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor are compared. Finally, experiments for each charger are performed under various load conditions, and the comparison results of the three capacitor chargers, including the conduction and switching losses, control characteristics, and overall efficiency, are discussed in this paper. This paper reviews the research and development results achieved in the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) in a decade. KERI develops pulsed power technology and its applications are mostly based on power electronics. KERI's research and development activity covers components, military systems, and industry applications. High-voltage switching means developed in KERI are a rotary arc gap (RAG) switch (11 kV and 400 kAp), a vacuum RAG (20 kV and 150 kAp), an inverse pinch switch (20 kV and 150 kAp), and 10-kV semiconductor switch stacks made of thyristors and Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs). The IGBT and thyristor stacks consist of 10 or 12 1.2-kV discrete devices and are operated by only one active drive circuit installed in the groundside. Some ferromagnetic opening switch schemes are also researched on trial bases. Some of KERI's research and development works from devices to application systems will be described.
