openaire: EC/H2020/681311/EU//QUESS The urgent need for reliable simulation tools to match the extreme accuracy needed to control tailored quantum devices highlights the importance of understanding open quantum systems and their modeling. To this end, we compare here the commonly used Redfield and Lindblad master equations against numerically exact results in the case of one and two resonant qubits transversely coupled at a single point to a Drude-cut ohmic bath. All the relevant parameters are varied over a broad range, which allows us to give detailed predictions about the validity and physically meaningful applicability of the weak-coupling approaches. We characterize the accuracy of the approximate approaches by comparing the maximum difference of their system evolution superoperators with numerically exact results. After optimizing the parameters of the approximate models to minimize the difference, we also explore if and to what extent the weak-coupling equations can be applied at least as phenomenological models. Optimization may lead toan accurate reproduction of experimental data, but yet our results are important to estimate the reliability of the extracted parameter values such as the bath temperature. Our findings set general guidelines for the range of validity of the usual Born-Markov master equations and indicate that they fail to accurately describe the physics in a surprisingly broad range of parameters, in particular, at low temperatures. Since quantum-technological devices operate there, their accurate modeling calls for a careful choice of methods.

We investigate the driven quantum phase transition between the oscillating motion and the classical nearly free rotations of the Josephson pendulum coupled to a harmonic oscillator in the presence of dissipation. We refer to this as the Josephson-Rabi model. This model describes the standard setup of circuit quantum electrodynamics, where typically a transmon device is embedded in a superconducting cavity. We find that by treating the system quantum mechanically this transition occurs at higher drive powers than expected from an all-classical treatment, which is a consequence of the quasiperiodicity originating in the discrete energy spectrum of the bound states. We calculate the photon number in the resonator and show that its dependence on the drive power is nonlinear. In addition, the resulting multi-photon blockade phenomenon is sensitive to the truncation of the number of states in the transmon, which limits the applicability of the standard Jaynes-Cummings model as an approximation for the pendulum-oscillator system. We calculate the nth order correlation functions of the blockaded microwave photons and observe the differences between the rotating-wave approximation and the full multilevel Josephson-Rabi Hamiltonian with the counter-rotating terms included. Finally, we compare two different approaches to dissipation, namely the Floquet-Born-Markov and the Lindblad formalisms., 18 pages, 9 figures

Superconducting microwave circuits show great potential for practical quantum technological applications such as quantum information processing. However, fast and on-demand initialization of the quantum degrees of freedom in these devices remains a challenge. Here, we experimentally implement a tunable heat sink that is potentially suitable for the initialization of superconducting qubits. Our device consists of two coupled resonators. The first resonator has a high quality factor and a fixed frequency whereas the second resonator is designed to have a low quality factor and a tunable resonance frequency. We engineer the low quality factor using an on-chip resistor and the frequency tunability using a superconducting quantum interference device. When the two resonators are in resonance, the photons in the high-quality resonator can be efficiently dissipated. We show that the corresponding loaded quality factor can be tuned from above 105 down to a few thousand at 10 GHz in good quantitative agreement with our theoretical model.

Coupling electromagnetic waves in a cavity and mechanical vibrations via the radiation pressure of photons is a promising platform for investigations of quantum–mechanical properties of motion. A drawback is that the effect of one photon tends to be tiny, and hence one of the pressing challenges is to substantially increase the interaction strength. A novel scenario is to introduce into the setup a quantum two-level system (qubit), which, besides strengthening the coupling, allows for rich physics via strongly enhanced nonlinearities. Here we present a design of cavity optomechanics in the microwave frequency regime involving a Josephson junction qubit. We demonstrate boosting of the radiation–pressure interaction by six orders of magnitude, allowing to approach the strong coupling regime. We observe nonlinear phenomena at single-photon energies, such as an enhanced damping attributed to the qubit. This work opens up nonlinear cavity optomechanics as a plausible tool for the study of quantum properties of motion., Radiation pressure can control the motion of a nanoscale resonator, but pushing this to the quantum limit is difficult because the influence of a single photon is tiny. We study numerically the onset of higher-level excitations and resonance frequency shifts in the generalized multilevel Rabi model with dispersive coupling under strong driving. The response to a weak probe is calculated using the Floquet method, which allows us to calculate the probe spectrum and extract the resonance frequency. We test our predictions using a superconducting circuit consisting of transmon coupled capacitively to a coplanar waveguide resonator. This system is monitored by a weak probe field, and at the same time driven at various powers by a stronger microwave tone. We show that the transition from the quantum to the classical regime is accompanied by a rapid increase of the transmon occupation and, consequently that the qubit approximation is valid only in the extreme quantum limit., 12 pages, 4 figures

We review the physical phenomena that arise when quantum mechanical energy levels are modulated in time. The dynamics resulting from changes in the transition frequency is a problem studied since the early days of quantum mechanics. It has been of constant interest both experimentally and theoretically since, with the simple two-state model providing an inexhaustible source of novel concepts. When the transition frequency of a quantum system is modulated, several phenomena can be observed, such as Landau-Zener-St\"uckelberg-Majorana interference, motional averaging and narrowing, and the formation of dressed states with the presence of sidebands in the spectrum. Adiabatic changes result in the accumulation of geometric phases, which can be used to create topological states. In recent years, an exquisite experimental control in the time domain was gained through the parameters entering the Hamiltonian, and high-fidelity readout schemes allowed the state of the system to be monitored non-destructively. These developments were made in the field of quantum devices, especially in superconducting qubits, as a well as in atomic physics, in particular in ultracold gases. As a result of these advances, it became possible to demonstrate many of the fundamental effects that arise in a quantum system when its transition frequencies are modulated. We show that the counter-rotating terms of the dispersive qubit-cavity Rabi model can produce relatively large and nonmonotonic Bloch-Siegert shifts in the cavity frequency as the system is driven through a quantum-to-classical transition. Using a weak microwave probe tone, we demonstrate experimentally this effect by monitoring the resonance frequency of a microwave cavity coupled to a transmon and driven by a microwave field with varying power. In the weakly driven regime (quantum phase), the Bloch-Siegert shift appears as a small constant frequency shift, while for strong drive (classical phase) it presents an oscillatory behaviour as a function of the number of photons in the cavity. We have studied the transmission of transverse oscillations through a thin Fermi liquid film, using Landau's Fermi liquid theory. Fermi liquid theory describes the dynamics of interacting, degenerate fermion systems, for example non-superfluid, i.e.\ normal state \textsuperscript{3}He at millikelvin temperatures. The response of a Fermi liquid to the transverse oscillations of a planar substrate has previously been calculated for a fluid layer of infinite thickness. We have modified these calculations for application to a film of finite thickness, either with a free surface, or as confined between two parallel substrates. The equations take into account contributions to the acoustic impedance from both the collective transverse zero sound mode, as well as the incoherent single-quasiparticle excitations and are solved using numerical methods., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures. When the level separation of a qubit is modulated periodically across an avoided crossing, tunneling to the excited state - and consequently Landau-Zener-St\"uckelberg interference - can occur. The types of modulation studied so far correspond to a continuous change of the level separation. Here we study periodic latching modulation, in which the level separation is switched abruptly between two values and is kept constant otherwise. In this case, the conventional approach based on the asymptotic Landau-Zener (LZ) formula for transition probabilities is not applicable. We develop a novel adiabatic-impulse model for the evolution of the system and derive the resonance conditions. Additionally, we derive analytical results based on the rotating-wave approximation (RWA). The adiabatic-impulse model and the RWA results are compared with those of a full numerical simulation. These theoretical predictions are tested in an experimental setup consisting of a transmon whose flux bias is modulated with a square wave form. A rich spectrum is observed, with distinctive features correspoding to two regimes: slow-modulation and fast-modulation. These experimental results are shown to be in very good agreement with the theoretical models. Cavity optomechanics is showing promise for studying quantum mechanics in large systems. However, smallness of the radiation-pressure coupling is a serious hindrance. Here we show how the charge tuning of the Josephson inductance in a single-Cooper-pair transistor (SCPT) can be exploited to arrange a strong radiation pressure -type coupling $g_0$ between mechanical and microwave resonators. In a certain limit of parameters, such a coupling can also be seen as a qubit-mediated coupling of two resonators. We show that this scheme allows reaching extremely high $g_0$. Contrary to the recent proposals for exploiting the non-linearity of a large radiation pressure coupling, the main non-linearity in this setup originates from a cross-Kerr type of coupling between the resonators, where the cavity refractive index depends on the phonon number. We study the novel nonlinear phenomena that emerge in a charge qubit due to the interplay between a strong microwave flux drive and a periodic Josephson potential. We first analyze the system in terms of the linear Landau-Zener-St\"uckelberg model, and show its inadequacy in a periodic system with several Landau-Zener crossings within a drive period. Experimentally, we probe the quasienergy levels of the driven qubit with an LC-cavity, which requires the use of linear response theory. The present qubit technology, in particular in Josephson qubits, allows an unprecedented control of discrete energy levels. This motivates a new study of the old pump-probe problem, where a discrete quantum system is driven by a strong drive and simultaneously probed by a weaker one. The strong drive is included by the Floquet method and the resulting quasienergy states are then studied with the probe. We study a qubit where the harmonic drive has a significant longitudinal component relative to the static equilibrium state of the qubit. Both analytical and numerical methods are used to solve the problem. We present calculations with realistic parameters and compare the results with recent experimental results. A superconducting qubit was driven in an ultrastrong fashion by an oscillatory microwave field, which was created by coupling via the nonlinear Josephson energy. The observed Stark shifts of the `atomic' levels are so pronounced that corrections even beyond the lowest-order Bloch-Siegert shift are needed to properly explain the measurements. The quasienergies of the dressed two-level system were probed by resonant absorption via a cavity, and the results are in agreement with a calculation based on the Floquet approach., Comment: 4+ pages

We investigate phase-sensitive interference effects in a periodically $\sin(2\pi f_{\rm rf} t)$-driven, artificial two-state system connected to a microwave resonator at $f_{LC} \simeq 800$ MHz. We observe two kinds of multiphoton transitions in the two-state system, accompanied by: 1) Several quanta from the drive at $f_{\rm rf}$ and 2) one quantum at $f_{\rm rf}$ and several at $f_{LC}$. The former are described using phase-sensitive Landau-Zener transitions, while the latter are discussed in terms of vibronic transitions in diatomic molecules. With advanced fabrication techniques it is possible to make nanoscale electronic structures that have discrete energy levels. Such structures are called artificial atoms because of analogy with true atoms. Examples of such atoms are quantum dots in semiconductor heterostructures and Josephson-junction qubits. It is also possible to have artificial atoms interacting with each other. This is an artificial molecule in the sense that the electronic states are analogous to the ones in a molecule. In this letter we present a different type of artificial molecule that, in addition to electronic states, also includes the analog of nuclear vibrations in a diatomic molecule. Some of the earlier experiments could be interpreted using this analogy, including qubits coupled to oscillators and qubits driven by an intense field. In our case the electronic states of the molecule are represented by a Josephson-junction qubit, and the nuclear separation corresponds to the magnetic flux in a loop containing the qubit and an LC oscillator. We probe the vibronic transitions, where both the electronic and vibrational states change simultaneously, and find that they are analogous to true molecules. The vibronic transitions could be used for sideband cooling of the oscillator, and we see damping up to sidebands of order 10., 5 pages, 4 figures

We analyze a superconducting charge qubit that is dispersively coupled to an electric resonator. The system is connected to a transmission line that allows a reflection measurement. In this paper we derive the equations of motion of the system by using the quantum network theory. We assume that the measurement signal is so strong that the resonator behaves classically. The time evolution of the qubit is calculated with the Bloch equations. We have simulated the system in the adiabatic eigenbasis of the qubit to bring out the effects of the changing band curvatures under strong driving. We use circuit theory to calculate the energy flow in different parts of the circuit.

The impressive progress in fabricating and controlling superconducting devices for quantum information processing has reached a level where reliable theoretical predictions need to account for quantum correlations that are not captured by the conventional modeling of contemporary quantum computers. This applies particularly to the qubit initialization as the process which crucially limits typical operation times. Here we employ numerically exact methods to study realistic implementations of a transmon qubit embedded in electromagnetic environments focusing on the most important system-reservoir correlation effects such as the Lamb shift and entanglement. For the qubit initialization we find a fundamental trade-off between speed and accuracy which sets intrinsic constraints in the optimization of future reset protocols. Instead, the fidelities of quantum logic gates can be sufficiently accurately predicted by standard treatments. Our results can be used to accurately predict the performance of specific set-ups and also to guide future experiments in probing low-temperature properties of qubit reservoirs., 15 pages, 5 figures.
