We report the charge-changing cross sections ($\sigma_{\text{cc}}$) of 24 $p$-shell nuclides on both hydrogen and carbon at about 900$A$ MeV, of which $^{8,9}$Li, $^{10\textendash12}$Be, $^{10,14,15}$B, $^{14,15,17\textendash22}$N and $^{16}$O on hydrogen and $^{8,9}$Li on carbon are for the first time. Benefiting from the data set,we found a new and robust relationship between the scaling factor of the Glauber model calculations and the separation energies of the nuclei of interest on both targets.This allows us to deduce proton radii ($R_p$) for the first time from the cross sections on hydrogen. Nearly identical $R_p$ values are deduced from both target data for the neutron-rich carbon isotopes, however, the $R_p$ from the hydrogen target is systematically smaller in the neutron-rich nitrogen isotopes.This calls for further experimental and theoretical investigations., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The root mean square radii of the proton density distribution in $^{16-24}$O derived from measurements of charge changing cross sections with a carbon target at $\sim$900$A$ MeV together with the matter radii portray thick neutron skin for $^{22 - 24}$O despite $^{22,24}$O being doubly magic. Imprints of the shell closures at $N$ = 14 and 16 are reflected in local minima of their proton radii that provide evidence for the tensor interaction causing them. The radii agree with it ab initio calculations employing the chiral NNLO$_{\mathrm{sat}}$ interaction, though skin thickness predictions are challenged. Growing interest in quantum computing for practical applications has led to a surge in the availability of programmable machines for executing quantum algorithms. Present day photonic quantum computers have been limited either to non-deterministic operation, low photon numbers and rates, or fixed random gate sequences. Here we introduce a full-stack hardware-software system for executing many-photon quantum circuits using integrated nanophotonics: a programmable chip, operating at room temperature and interfaced with a fully automated control system. It enables remote users to execute quantum algorithms requiring up to eight modes of strongly squeezed vacuum initialized as two-mode squeezed states in single temporal modes, a fully general and programmable four-mode interferometer, and genuine photon number-resolving readout on all outputs. Multi-photon detection events with photon numbers and rates exceeding any previous quantum optical demonstration on a programmable device are made possible by strong squeezing and high sampling rates. We verify the non-classicality of the device output, and use the platform to carry out proof-of-principle demonstrations of three quantum algorithms: Gaussian boson sampling, molecular vibronic spectra, and graph similarity.

A thick neutron skin emerges from the first determination of root mean square radii of the proton distributions for $^{17-22}$N from charge changing cross section measurements around 900$A$ MeV at GSI. Neutron halo effects are signaled for $^{22}$N from an increase in the proton and matter radii. The radii suggest an unconventional shell gap at $N$ = 14 arising from the attractive proton-neutron tensor interaction, in good agreement with shell model calculations. $Ab$ $initio$, in-medium similarity re-normalization group, calculations with a state-of-the-art chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon interaction reproduce well the data approaching the neutron drip-line isotopes but are challenged in explaining the complete isotopic trend of the radii., Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures

The FAIR facility is an international accelerator centre for research with ion and antiproton beams. It is being built at Darmstadt, Germany as an extension to the current GSI research institute. One major part of the facility will be the Super-FRS separator, which will be include in phase one of the project construction. The NUSTAR experiments will benefit from the Super-FRS, which will deliver an unprecedented range of radioactive ion beams (RIB). These experiments will use beams of different energies and characteristics in three different branches; the high-energy which utilizes the RIB at relativistic energies 300-1500 MeV /u as created in the production process, the low energy branch aims to use beams in the range of 0-150 MeV/u whereas the ring branch will cool and store beams in the NESR ring. The main tasks for the Super-FRS beam diagnostics chambers will be for the set up and adjustment of the separator as well as to provide tracking and event-by-event particle identification. The Helsinki Institute of Physics, the Comenius University, and the Detector Laboratory and Experimental electronics at GSI are in a joint R&D phase of a GEM-TPC detector which could satisfy the requirements of such diagnostics and tracking chambers in terms of tracking efficiency, space resolution, count rate capability and momenta resolution. The current status of the first prototype and the preliminary results from the test beam campaign S417 using the n-Xyter chips mounted on GEMEX cards will be shown.

The GEM-TPC detector will be part of the standard Super-FRS detection system, as tracker detectors at several focal stations along the separator and its three branches.

Proton radii of $^{12-19}$C densities derived from first accurate charge changing cross section measurements at 900$A$ MeV with a carbon target are reported. A thick neutron surface evolves from $\sim$ 0.5 fm in $^{15}$C to $\sim$ 1 fm in $^{19}$C. The halo radius in $^{19}$C is found to be 6.4$\pm$0.7 fm as large as $^{11}$Li. Production cross sections of nitrogen isotopes from high-energy carbon isotopes on hydrogen and carbon targets have been measured for the first time for a wide range of isotopes. The fragment separator FRS at GSI was used to deliver C isotope beams. The cross sections of the production of N isotopes were determined by charge measurements of forward going fragments. The cross sections show a rapid increase with the number of neutrons in the projectile. Since the production of nitrogen is mostly due to charge exchange reactions below the proton separation energies, the present data suggests a concentration of Gamow-Teller and Fermi transition strength at low excitation energies for neutron-rich isotopes. It was also observed that the cross sections were enhanced much more strongly for neutron rich isotopes in the C-target data., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, 30 references

The ALICE Collaboration has measured inclusive J/psi production in pp collisions at a center of mass energy sqrt(s)=2.76 TeV at the LHC. The results presented in this Letter refer to the rapidity ranges |y|<0.9 and 2.5

New measurements of the interaction cross sections of 22,23O at 900A MeV performed at the GSI, Darmstadt are reported that address the unsolved puzzle of the large cross section previously observed for 23O. The matter radii for these oxygen isotopes extracted through a Glauber model analysis are in good agreement with the new predictions of the ab initio coupled-cluster theory reported here. They are consistent with a 22O+neutron description of 23O as well., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

With a new detector setup and the high-resolution performance of the fragment separator FRS at GSI we discovered 57 new isotopes in the atomic number range of 60$\leq Z \leq 78$: \nuc{159-161}{Nb}, \nuc{160-163}{Pm}, \nuc{163-166}Sm, \nuc{167-168}{Eu}, \nuc{167-171}{Gd}, \nuc{169-171}{Tb}, \nuc{171-174}{Dy}, \nuc{173-176}{Ho}, \nuc{176-178}{Er}, \nuc{178-181}{Tm}, \nuc{183-185}{Yb}, \nuc{187-188}{Lu}, \nuc{191}{Hf}, \nuc{193-194}{Ta}, \nuc{196-197}{W}, \nuc{199-200}{Re}, \nuc{201-203}{Os}, \nuc{204-205}{Ir} and \nuc{206-209}{Pt}. The new isotopes have been unambiguously identified in reactions with a $^{238}$U beam impinging on a Be target at 1 GeV/u. The isotopic production cross-section for the new isotopes have been measured and compared with predictions of different model calculations. In general, the ABRABLA and COFRA models agree better than a factor of two with the new data, whereas the semiempirical EPAX model deviates much more. Projectile fragmentation is the dominant reaction creating the new isotopes, whereas fission contributes significantly only up to about the element holmium., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We derive a multiplication law for free non-hermitian random matrices allowing for an easy reconstruction of the two-dimensional eigenvalue distribution of the product ensemble from the characteristics of the individual ensembles. We define the corresponding non-hermitian S transform being a natural generalization of the Voiculescu S transform. In addition we extend the classical hermitian S transform approach to deal with the situation when the random matrix ensemble factors have vanishing mean including the case when both of them are centered. We use planar diagrammatic techniques to derive these results., Comment: 25 pages + 11 figures

The design, construction, and commissioning of the ALICE Time-Projection Chamber (TPC) is described. It is the main device for pattern recognition, tracking, and identification of charged particles in the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC. The TPC is cylindrical in shape with a volume close to 90 m^3 and is operated in a 0.5 T solenoidal magnetic field parallel to its axis. In this paper we describe in detail the design considerations for this detector for operation in the extreme multiplicity environment of central Pb--Pb collisions at LHC energy. The implementation of the resulting requirements into hardware (field cage, read-out chambers, electronics), infrastructure (gas and cooling system, laser-calibration system), and software led to many technical innovations which are described along with a presentation of all the major components of the detector, as currently realized. We also report on the performance achieved after completion of the first round of stand-alone calibration runs and demonstrate results close to those specified in the TPC Technical Design Report., Comment: 55 pages, 82 figures

We show that the eigenvalue density of a product X=X_1 X_2 ... X_M of M independent NxN Gaussian random matrices in the large-N limit is rotationally symmetric in the complex plane and is given by a simple expression rho(z,\bar{z}) = 1/(M\pi\sigma^2} |z|^{-2+2/M} for |z|<\sigma, and is zero for |z|> \sigma. The parameter \sigma corresponds to the radius of the circular support and is related to the amplitude of the Gaussian fluctuations. This form of the eigenvalue density is highly universal. It is identical for products of Gaussian Hermitian, non-Hermitian, real or complex random matrices. It does not change even if the matrices in the product are taken from different Gaussian ensembles. We present a self-contained derivation of this result using a planar diagrammatic technique for Gaussian matrices. The contribution presents a brief summary of the Gauge/Gravity approach to the study of hydrodynamic flow of the quark-gluon plasma formed in heavy-ion collisions, in a boost-invariant setting (Bjorken flow). Considering the ideal case of a supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory for which the AdS/CFT correspondence gives a precise form of the Gauge/Gravity duality, the properties of the strongly coupled expanding plasma are put in one-to-one correspondence with the metric of a 5-dimensional black hole with the horizon moving away in the 5th dimension and its deformations consistent with the relevant Einstein equations. Several recently studied aspects of this framework are recalled and put in perspective. New results in collaboration with G.Beuf and M.Heller on the early time expansion towards the hydrodynamical regime are provided giving a new insight on the far-from-equilibrium behavior of the fluid at strong coupling and the thermalization and isotropization problems., Comment: 4 pages,1 figure, Proceedings of the EPS 2009 conference, Cracow, July 2009

Using the coherent state formalism we calculate matrix elements of the one-loop non-planar dilatation operator of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM between operators dual to folded Frolov-Tseytlin strings and observe a curious scaling behavior. We comment on the {\it qualitative} similarity of our matrix elements to the interaction vertex of a string field theory. In addition, we present a solvable toy model for string splitting and joining. The scaling behaviour of the matrix elements suggests that the contribution to the genus one energy shift coming from semi-classical string splitting and joining is small., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures in 11 files

We propose a generalization of the Bjorken in-out Ansatz for fluid trajectories which, when applied to the (1+1) hydrodynamic equations, generates a one-parameter family of analytic solutions interpolating between the boost-invariant Bjorken picture and the non boost-invariant one by Landau. This parameter characterises the proper-time scale when the fluid velocities approach the in-out Ansatz. We discuss the resulting rapidity distribution of entropy for various freeze-out conditions and compare it with the original Bjorken and Landau results., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

We derive two coupled non-linear evolution equations corresponding to the truncation of the Balitsky infinite hierarchy of saturation equations after inclusion of dipole-dipole correlations, i.e. one step beyond the Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation. We exhibit an exact solution for maximal correlation which still satisfies the same asymptotic geometric scaling as BK but with the S-matrix going to 1/2 (instead of 0) in the full saturation region., Comment: 4 pages, no figure. We consider a class of non-supersymmetric gauge theories obtained by orbifolding the N=4 super-Yang-Mills theories. We focus on the resulting quiver theories in their deconstructed phase, both at small and large coupling, where a fifth dimension opens up. In particular we investigate the r\^ole played by this extra dimension when evaluating the rectangular Wilson loops encoding the interaction potential between quarks located at different points in the orbifold. The large coupling potential of the deconstructed quiver theory is determined using the AdS/CFT correspondence and analysing the corresponding minimal surface solution for the dual gravitational metric. At small coupling, the potential between quarks decreases with their angular distance while at strong coupling we find a linear dependence at large distance along the (deconstructed) fifth dimension., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures

We consider the exact superpotential of N=1 super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SO(N) and arbitrary tree-level polynomial superpotential of one adjoint Higgs field. A field-theoretic derivation of the glueball superpotential is given, based on factorization of the N=2 Seiberg-Witten curve. Following the conjecture of Dijkgraaf and Vafa, the result is matched with the corresponding SO(N) matrix model prediction. We address the conjecture that at the tachyonic vacuum open strings get transformed into closed strings. We show that it is possible in the context of boundary string field theory to interpolate between the conventional open string theory, characterized by having the D25 brane as the boundary state, and an off-shell (open) string theory where the boundary state is identified with the closed string vacuum, where holomorphic and antiholomorphic modes decouple and where bulk vertex operator correlation functions are identical to those of the closed string., Comment: 13 pages;v2: references added;v3: version to appear in Phys. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence in a confining backgroundand the worldline formalism of gauge field theories,we compute scattering amplitudes with an exchange of quark andantiquark in the $t$-channel corresponding to Reggeon exchange. Itrequires going beyond the eikonal approximation, which was used when studying Pomeron exchange. The wordline path integral is evaluated through the determination of minimal surfaces and their boundaries by the saddle-point method at large gauge coupling g^2N_c. We find a Regge behaviour with linear Regge trajectories. The slope is related to the $q\bar q$ static potential and is four times the Pomeronslope obtained in the same framework. A contribution to the intercept, related to the L\"uscher term, comes from the fluctuations around the minimal surface., Comment: 11 pages, 1 eps figure

Using the theory of free random variables (FRV) and the Coulomb gas analogy, we construct stable random matrix ensembles that are random matrix generalizations of the classical one-dimensional stable L\'{e}vy distributions. We show that the resolvents for the corresponding matrices obey transcendental equations in the large size limit. We solve these equations in a number of cases, and show that the eigenvalue distributions exhibit L\'{e}vy tails. For the analytically known L\'{e}vy measures we explicitly construct the density of states using the method of orthogonal polynomials. We show that the L\'{e}vy tail-distributions are characterized by a novel form of microscopic universality., Comment: 5 pages

We propose the Wilson discretization of the supersymmetric Yang-Mills Quantum Mechanics as a lattice version of the matrix model of M-theory. An SU(2) model is studied numerically in the quenched approximation for D=4. A clear signal for the existence of two different phases is found and the continuum pseudocritical temperature is determined. The Wilson discretization of the dimensionally reduced supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is constructed. This gives a lattice version of the matrix model of M-theory. An SU(2) model is studied numerically in the quenched approximation for D=4. The system shows canonical scaling in the continuum limit. A clear signal for a prototype of the "black hole to strings" phase transition is found. The pseudocritical temperature is determined and the temperature dependence of the total size of the system is measured in both phases. We address the problem of computing scattering amplitudes related to the correlation function of two Wilson lines and/or loops elongated along light-cone directions in strongly coupled gauge theories. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence in the classical approximation, the amplitudes are shown to be related to minimal surfaces generalizing the {\em helicoid} in various $AdS_5$ backgrounds. Infra-red divergences appearing for Wilson lines can be factorized out or can be cured by considering the IR finite case of correlation functions of two Wilson loops. In non-conformal cases related to confining theories, reggeized amplitudes with linear trajectories and unit intercept are obtained and shown to come from the approximately flat metrics near the horizon, which sets the scale for the Regge slope. In the conformal case the absence of confinement leads to a different solution. We consider small angle and large impact parameter high energy scattering of colourless states in SYM using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The gauge theory scattering amplitude is linked with a correlation function of tilted Wilson loops, which can be calculated by the exchange of bulk supergravity fields between the two corresponding string worldsheets. We identify the dominant contributions, which all correspond to real phase shifts. In particular, we find a contribution of the bulk graviton which gives an unexpected `gravity-like' $s^1$ behaviour of the gauge theory phase shift in a specific range of energies and (large) impact parameters., Comment: 22p, 2 figures

We establish a general relation between the diagonal correlator of eigenvectors and the spectral Green's function for non-hermitian random-matrix models in the large-N limit. We apply this result to a number of non-hermitian random-matrix models and show that the outcome is in good agreement with numerical results., Comment: 10 pages with 4 EPS figures included

Using the dipole framework for QCD at small x in the 1/N_c limit, we derive the expression of the 1 -> p dipole multiplicity density in momentum space. This gives an analytical expression for the 1 -> p QCD Pomeron amplitudes in terms of one-loop integration of effective vertices in transverse momentum. Conformal invariance and a Hilbert space construction for dipole correlation functions are the main tools of the derivation. The fragment separator FRS at GSI was used as an energy-loss spectrometer to measure the longitudinal momentum distributions of {16,18}C fragments after one-neutron removal reactions in {17,19}C impinging on a carbon target at about 910 MeV/u. The distributions in the projectile frames are characterized by a FWHM of 141+-6 MeV/c for {16}C and 69+-3 MeV/c for {18}C. Recent progress on the event-by-event analysis of intermittent data by R. A. Janik and myself is reported. The intermittency analysis of single event data (particle moments) in multiparticle production is improved, taking into account corrections due to the reconstruction of history of a particle cascade. We show that at the critical point of chiral random matrix models, novel scaling laws for the inverse moments of the eigenvalues are expected. We evaluate explicitly the pertinent microscopic spectral density, and found it in agreement with numerical calculations. Using the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner (GOR) relation and semi-classical arguments, we show that the bulk quark spectrum in QCD exhibits a variety of regimes including the ergodic one described by random matrix theory. We analyze the quark spectral form-factor in the diffusive and ballistic regime. We suggest that a class of chiral transitions in QCD is possibly of the metal-insulator type, with a universal spectral statistics at the mobility edge.

The intercept of the odderon trajectory is derived, by finding the spectrum of the second integral of motion of the three reggeon system in high energy QCD. When combined with earlier solution of the appropriate Baxter equation, this leads to the determination of the low lying states of that system. In particular, the energy of the lowest state gives the intercept of the odderon alpha_O(0)=1-0.2472 alpha_s N_c/pi., Comment: 11 pages, 2 Postscript figures

A new method is applied to solve the Baxter equation for the one dimensional system of noncompact spins. Dynamics of such an ensemble is equivalent to that of a set of reggeized gluons exchanged in the high energy limit of QCD amplitudes.
