Objective The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between dynapenia and metabolic risk factors in obese and nonobese older adults. Methods A total of 1453 men and women (age ≥70 years) from the Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders (LIFE) Study were categorized as (1) nondynapenic/nonobese (NDYN-NO), (2) dynapenic/nonobese (DYN-NO), (3) nondynapenic/obese (NDYN-O), or (4) dynapenic/obese (DYN-O), based on muscle strength (Foundation for the National Institute of Health criteria) and body mass index. Dependent variables were blood lipids, fasting glucose, blood pressure, presence of at least 3 metabolic syndrome (MetS) criteria, and other chronic conditions. Results A significantly higher likelihood of having abdominal obesity criteria in NDYN-NO compared with DYN-NO groups (55.6 vs 45.1%, P ≤ .01) was observed. Waist circumference also was significantly higher in obese groups (DYN-O = 114.0 ± 12.9 and NDYN-O = 111.2 ± 13.1) than in nonobese (NDYN-NO = 93.1 ± 10.7 and DYN-NO = 92.2 ± 11.2, P ≤ .01); and higher in NDYN-O compared with DYN-O ( P = .008). Additionally, NDYN-O demonstrated higher diastolic blood pressure compared with DYN-O (70.9 ± 10.1 vs 67.7 ± 9.7, P ≤ .001). No significant differences were found across dynapenia and obesity status for all other metabolic components ( P > .05). The odds of having MetS or its individual components were similar in obese and nonobese, combined or not with dynapenia (nonsignificant odds ratio [95% confidence interval]). Conclusion Nonobese dynapenic older adults had fewer metabolic disease risk factors than nonobese and nondynapenic older adults. Moreover, among obese older adults, dynapenia was associated with lower risk of meeting MetS criteria for waist circumference and diastolic blood pressure. Additionally, the presence of dynapenia did not increase cardiometabolic disease risk in either obese or nonobese older adults.

Answering questions before learning something ("prequestions") enhances learning. However, these benefits usually occur for information that was asked in the prequestions (i.e. prequestioned material), and not for non-prequestioned material. We reasoned that this narrow benefit may be due to the fact that studies typically use fairly simple prequestions that have a clear answer within one part of the learning material

The objectives of this study were to replicate age-related decrements in recollection and source memory, and to determine if repetition lag training improves recollection and whether these effects maintain and transfer to other tasks. Sixteen young adults and 46 healthy older adults participated, the latter of whom comprised hi-old (n = 16) and lo-old (n = 30) based on neuropsychological memory tests. All participants completed memory tests and questionnaires at baseline, and then half of the lo-old underwent nine days of repetition lag training while the other half engaged in a 9-day active control program. The memory tests and questionnaires were repeated immediately after the training or control program, and again three months later. The baseline data replicated well-established age-related decrements in recollection. Repetition lag training improved objective measures of recollection, eliminated the age-related recollection decrement, and these improvements maintained over three months. However, training did not transfer to any other objective test of memory thought to rely on recollection, or to any subjective memory measure. The results demonstrate for the first time that repetition lag training improves objective measures of recollection, eliminates recollection differences between younger and older adults, and that these gains maintain over a 3-month period posttraining. The lack of transfer to other tasks, however, indicates that training one type of recollection (for the studied modality in this case) does not affect other types of recollection (e.g., of an item's recency). Background Data are sparse regarding the value of physical activity ( PA ) surveillance among older adults—particularly among those with mobility limitations. The objective of this study was to examine longitudinal associations between objectively measured daily PA and the incidence of cardiovascular events among older adults in the LIFE (Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders) study. Methods and Results Cardiovascular events were adjudicated based on medical records review, and cardiovascular risk factors were controlled for in the analysis. Home‐based activity data were collected by hip‐worn accelerometers at baseline and at 6, 12, and 24 months postrandomization to either a physical activity or health education intervention. LIFE study participants (n=1590; age 78.9±5.2 [ SD ] years; 67.2% women) at baseline had an 11% lower incidence of experiencing a subsequent cardiovascular event per 500 steps taken per day based on activity data (hazard ratio, 0.89; 95% confidence interval, 0.84–0.96; P =0.001). At baseline, every 30 minutes spent performing activities ≥500 counts per minute (hazard ratio, 0.75; confidence interval, 0.65–0.89 [ P =0.001]) were also associated with a lower incidence of cardiovascular events. Throughout follow‐up (6, 12, and 24 months), both the number of steps per day (per 500 steps; hazard ratio, 0.90, confidence interval, 0.85–0.96 [ P =0.001]) and duration of activity ≥500 counts per minute (per 30 minutes; hazard ratio, 0.76; confidence interval, 0.63–0.90 [ P =0.002]) were significantly associated with lower cardiovascular event rates. Conclusions Objective measurements of physical activity via accelerometry were associated with cardiovascular events among older adults with limited mobility (summary score >10 on the Short Physical Performance Battery) both using baseline and longitudinal data. Background Computer-administered assessment of cognitive function is being increasingly incorporated in clinical trials; however, its performance in these settings has not been systematically evaluated. Design The Seniors Health and Activity Research Program pilot trial (N = 73) developed a computer-based tool for assessing memory performance and executive functioning. The Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders investigators incorporated this battery in a full-scale multicenter clinical trial (N = 1635). We describe relationships that test scores have with those from interviewer-administered cognitive function tests and risk factors for cognitive deficits and describe performance measures (completeness, intraclass correlations [ICC]). Results Computer-based assessments of cognitive function had consistent relationships across the pilot and full-scale trial cohorts with interviewer-administered assessments of cognitive function, age, and a measure of physical function. In the Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders cohort, their external validity was further demonstrated by associations with other risk factors for cognitive dysfunction: education, hypertension, diabetes, and physical function. Repetition-lag memory training was developed to increase individuals' use of recollection as opposed to familiarity in recognition memory. The goals of this study were to examine the feasibility of repetition-lag training in patients with chronic stroke and to explore whether the training might show suggestions of transfer to non-trained tasks.Quasi-experimental.Patients (n = 17) took part in six repetition-lag training sessions and their gains on the training and non-trained tasks were compared to those of age-matched healthy controls (n = 30).All but two patients completed the training, indicating that the method is feasible with a wide range of patients with stroke. The amount patients gained on the training task was similar to that of healthy controls (that is, the Group × Time interactions were by-and-large not significant), suggesting that patients with stroke might benefit to the same degree as healthy adults from this training. Both groups showed some indication of transfer to the non-trained backward digit span task and visuospatial memory.These findings show that repetition-lag memory training is a possible approach with patients with stroke to enhance recollection. Further research on the method's efficacy and effectiveness is warranted.

To evaluate the extent of variability in functional responses in participants in the Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders (LIFE) study and to identify the relative contributions of intervention adherence, physical activity, and demographic and health characteristics to this variability.Secondary analysis.Multicenter institutions.A volunteer sample (N=1635) of sedentary men and women aged 70 to 89 years who were able to walk 400m but had physical limitations, defined as a Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) score of ≤9.Moderate-intensity physical activity (n=818) consisting of aerobic, resistance, and flexibility exercises performed both center-based (2times/wk) and home-based (3-4times/wk) sessions or health education program (n=817) consisting of weekly to monthly workshops covering relevant health information.Physical function (gait speed over 400m) and lower extremity function (SPPB score) assessed at baseline and 6, 12, and 24 months.Greater baseline physical function (gait speed, SPPB score) was negatively associated with change in gait speed (regression coefficient β=-.185; P.001) and change in SPPB score (β=-.365; P.001), whereas higher number of steps per day measured by accelerometry was positively associated with change in gait speed (β=.035; P.001) and change in SPPB score (β=.525; P.001). Other baseline factors associated with positive change in gait speed and/or SPPB score include younger age (P.001), lower body mass index (P.001), and higher self-reported physical activity (P=.002).Several demographic and physical activity-related factors were associated with the extent of change in functional outcomes in participants in the LIFE study. These factors should be considered when designing interventions for improving physical function in older adults with limited mobility.

Normal aging holds negative consequences for memory, in particular for the ability to recollect the precise details of an experience. With this in mind, Jennings and Jacoby (2003) developed a recollection training method using a single-probe recognition memory paradigm in which new items (i.e., foils) were repeated during the test phase at increasingly long intervals. In previous reports, this method has appeared to improve older adults’ performance on several non-trained cognitive tasks. We aimed to further examine potential transfer effects of this training paradigm and to determine which cognitive functions might predict training gains. Fifty-one older adults were assigned to either recollection training (n = 30) or an active control condition (n = 21) for six sessions over two weeks. Afterward, the recollection training group showed a greatly enhanced ability to reject the repeated foils. Surprisingly, however, the training and the control groups improved to the same degree as one another in recognition accuracy (d’) on their respective training tasks. Further, despite the recollection group’s significant improvement in rejecting the repeated foils, we observed little evidence of transfer to non-trained tasks (including a temporal source memory test). Age and higher baseline scores on a measure of global cognitive function (as measured by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment tool) and working memory (as measured by Digit Span Backward) predicted gains made by the recollection training group members.

The repetition-lag training procedure developed by Jennings and Jacoby (2003 , Neuropsychological Rehabilitation, 14, 417) has been shown to improve older adults' performance in the recognition memory task used for training, and to improve performance in a variety of other memory and executive function tasks ( Jennings, Webster, Kleykamp, & Dagenbach, 2005 , Aging, Neuropsychology, and Cognition, 12, 278). The present study examined the effects of concurrent interference tasks during the study or test phases of training to localize the source of gains. Overall, the results suggest that training is resilient and resistant to interference, but also that the processes used during the test phases of training are more important to the gains seen in the primary task and in the transfer tasks than those used in the study phases.

Poor blood flow and hypoxia/ischemia contribute to many disease states and may also be a factor in the decline of physical and cognitive function in aging. Nitrite has been discovered to be a vasodilator that is preferentially harnessed in hypoxia. Thus, both infused and inhaled nitrite are being studied as therapeutic agents for a variety of diseases. In addition, nitrite derived from nitrate in the diet has been shown to decrease blood pressure and improve exercise performance. Thus, dietary nitrate may also be important when increased blood flow in hypoxic or ischemic areas is indicated. These conditions could include age-associated dementia and cognitive decline. The goal of this study was to determine if dietary nitrate would increase cerebral blood flow in older adults.In this investigation we administered a high vs. low nitrate diet to older adults (74.7±6.9 years) and measured cerebral perfusion using arterial spin labeling magnetic resonance imaging. We found that the high nitrate diet did not alter global cerebral perfusion, but did lead to increased regional cerebral perfusion in frontal lobe white matter, especially between the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex.These results suggest that dietary nitrate may be useful in improving regional brain perfusion in older adults in critical brain areas known to be involved in executive functioning.

Little is known about the cognitive mechanisms of the memory impairment associated with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). We explored recollection and familiarity in 27 healthy young adults, 45 healthy older adults, and 17 individuals with aMCI. Relative to the younger adults, recollection was reduced in the older adults, especially among those with aMCI. Familiarity did not differ among groups. In the healthy younger and older adults, better performance on a set of clinical memory measures that are sensitive to medial temporal lobe functioning was associated with greater recollection. In addition, among the healthy older adults better executive functioning was also associated with greater recollection. These results are consistent with the notion that recollection is a product of strategic processes mediated by the prefrontal cortex that suppport the retrieval of context-dependent memories from the hippocampus. Hippocampal atrophy associated with aMCI may disrupt this brain network, and thereby interfere with recollection.

Transdermal nicotine (TN) is an efficacious smoking cessation pharmacotherapy thought to work, in part, by attenuating the effects of tobacco/nicotine abstinence and the effects of concurrently smoked cigarettes. Clinical trials suggest that TN may be less efficacious for women. This study explored the possibility of TN-related gender differences in > or = 8 hour abstinent smokers (54 women, 70 men) who completed four within-subject, double-blind, placebo-controlled sessions corresponding to 0, 7, 14, and 21 mg TN. In each approximately 6.5-hr long session participants smoked an own-brand cigarette 4 hours after TN administration and physiological and subjective outcomes were examined throughout each session. Results revealed that TN suppressed some signs and symptoms of tobacco abstinence and attenuated some effects of smoking, and these effects were not dependent on gender. Women were more sensitive to the direct effects of nicotine (e.g., ratings of Nauseous) and, independent of TN dose, self-administered less nicotine when smoking and rated smoking as less rewarding. Thus, although this study does not shed light on clinical observations that TN is less effective for women, results suggest that TN might need to be combined with other interventions to supplement its effects on tobacco/nicotine abstinence and concurrent smoking.

We explore a novel theory‐guided approach for training memory in older adults that distinguishes between recollection and automatic influences. Participants were given multiple trials of a continuous recognition task in which they had to use recollection to identify repeated items. After each correct trial, the number of intervening items between repetitions was gradually increased (incremented‐difficulty approach). Initially, accurate identification only occurred with two intervening items, which increased to 28 items following 6 hours of training. A second group of participants was given an equal amount of practice with the task but the number of intervening items was varied randomly across trials, independent of accuracy. These individuals showed significantly smaller gains in recollection. Results suggest that an incremented‐difficulty approach can enhance the ability to recollect information across increasing delay intervals. Implications for future training efforts are discussed.

Young adults and older elderly individuals rated the importance of various factors (e.g., age, motivation) and daily activities for effective memory functioning. Correlations between these ratings with cognitive lab performance, everyday memory errors, and behavior were then calculated for the older group. Results showed that different factors were associated with the two cognitive domains. Specifically, the perceived importance of age and strategy use correlated with everyday errors; whereas motivation, mental activity and routines correlated with lab scores. Inaddition, a belief in the importance of physical activity, social activity, and strategy use for memory did not correlate with the likelihood of engaging in those behaviors. Implications for memory efficacy training are discussed.

Some clinical trials have also demonstrated improvements in cognitive function in response to moderate–high intensity aerobic exercise; however, these have been limited by relatively small sample sizes and short durations. The Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders (LIFE) Study is the largest and longest randomized controlled clinical trial of physical activity with cognitive outcomes, in older sedentary adults at increased risk for incident mobility disability. One LIFE Study objective is to evaluate the effects of a structured physical activity program on changes in cognitive function and incident all-cause mild cognitive impairment or dementia. Here, we present the design and baseline cognitive data. At baseline, participants completed the modified Mini Mental Status Examination, Hopkins Verbal Learning Test, Digit Symbol Coding, Modified Rey–Osterrieth Complex Figure, and a computerized battery, selected to be sensitive to changes in speed of processing and executive functioning. During follow up, participants completed the same battery, along with the Category Fluency for Animals, Boston Naming, and Trail Making tests. The description of the mild cognitive impairment/dementia adjudication process is presented here. Participants with worse baseline Short Physical Performance Battery scores (prespecified at ≤7) had significantly lower median cognitive test scores compared with those having scores of 8or 9 with modified Mini Mental Status Examination score of 91versus (vs) 93, Hopkins Verbal Learning Test delayed recall score of 7.4vs 7.9, and Digit Symbol Coding score of 45vs 48, respectively (all P

We examined an approach aimed at training consciously-controlled recollection, introduced by Jennings and Jacoby (2003) , for its ability to replicate and generalize. A continuous recognition task, requiring recollection to identify the occurrence of repeated items over gradually increasing lag intervals (number of intervening items between the first and second presentation of a repeated word), was given to a group of older adults twice a week for three weeks. Pre-and-post training performance was assessed on multiple measures and compared with a recognition practice and no contact control group. Recollection training proved successful; accurate identification of repeated items increased across a lag interval of 2 to 18 intervening items. Post-training gains following recollection training were found on n-back, self-ordered pointing, source discrimination and digit symbol substitution, but not with reading span or the CVLT-II. No changes were identified in the other groups. Gains from recollection training seem to transfer successfully in older adults.

Neuroimaging studies of cognition have typically been designed to identify brain regions that are active during a cognitive process. However, identifying how brain regions interact may be equally important. In a recent study we found that the pattern of activation associated with a semantic task differed depending on how subjects made a response, suggesting that there was an interaction between the neural systems underlying response mode and semantic processing (J. M. Jennings et al., 1997, NeuroImage 5, 229-239). This result raises two important questions, which we examined here: (1) How did the regions underlying semantic performance influence one another, or interact, to produce a different pattern of activation in each case? (2) What can be learned about the neurobiology of semantic processing when different regions are identified as a function of response? We addressed these questions using structural equation modeling. This technique produced functional network models representing the effect of different regions on each other during the semantic task for each response. A common network of regions associated with semantic processing was observed and included the left inferior frontal and left superior temporal cortices, with other regions brought into that network depending on response (e.g., right middle frontal). Moreover, changes in the influences among these regions across response condition predicted the pattern of activation found previously. These results show how an arbitrary response can affect the neural pathways associated with a cognitive process, likely due to the parallel and reentrant organization of the brain, and emphasize the importance of examining functional connections when studying cognition.

During the last 25 years, dissociations in performance on indirect and direct tests of memory have typically been used to describe memory ability in amnesics. Unfortunately, these tests are not pure measures of processes. Rather than identifying processes with tasks, we use the “process dissociation procedure” (Jacoby, 1991) to separate contributions of automatic and consciously controlled memory processes in a brain-damaged population. Our results show that brain damage impairs consciously controlled processing, however, automatic uses of memory remain unaffected. In the discussion, we describe the advantages of using this procedure as a sensitive diagnostic memory test, as well as implications for memory retraining.

All cognitive measures loaded onto the first principal component (global cognitive function), which accounted for 40% of the overall variance.Our results support the use of computer-based tools for assessing cognitive function in multicenter clinical trials of older individuals.

International audience; Objective: This study was designed to extend the use of a memory training technique, known as the repetition-lag procedure, to Alzheimer patients. The specificity of this procedure is to target the process of recollection for improvement.Method: A group of 12 patients were trained individually for 6 h. The training procedure consisted of a series of yes/no recognition tasks in which some words were repeated throughout the test list across gradually increasing delays. Their performance was evaluated on pre-and-post tests and compared with a recognition practice group and a no contact control group.Results: Initially, recollection training patients only performed accurately when the delay between repetitions consisted of one intervening word, but by the end of training their performance increased up to four-word intervals. Interestingly, these benefits generalized to other measures of memory, such as working memory, visual memory and source recognition.Conclusions: Effectiveness of the repetition-lag procedure in Alzheimer’s disease is discussed.

Background The efficacy of non-pharmacological intervention approaches such as physical activity, strength, and cognitive training for improving brain health has not been established. Before definitive trials are mounted, important design questions on participation/adherence, training and interventions effects must be answered to more fully inform a full-scale trial. Methods SHARP-P was a single-blinded randomized controlled pilot trial of a 4-month physical activity training intervention (PA) and/or cognitive training intervention (CT) in a 2 × 2 factorial design with a health education control condition in 73 community-dwelling persons, aged 70-85 years, who were at risk for cognitive decline but did not have mild cognitive impairment. Results Intervention attendance rates were higher in the CT and PACT groups: CT: 96%, PA: 76%, PACT: 90% (p=0.004), the interventions produced marked changes in cognitive and physical performance measures (p≤0.05), and retention rates exceeded 90%. There were no statistically significant differences in 4-month changes in composite scores of cognitive, executive, and episodic memory function among arms. Four-month improvements in the composite measure increased with age among participants assigned to physical activity training but decreased with age for other participants (intervention*age interaction p = 0.01). Depending on the choice of outcome, two-armed full-scale trials may require fewer than 1,000 participants (continuous outcome) or 2,000 participants (categorical outcome). Conclusions Good levels of participation, adherence, and retention appear to be achievable for participants through age 85 years. Care should be taken to ensure that an attention control condition does not attenuate intervention effects. Depending on the choice of outcome measures, the necessary sample sizes to conduct four-year trials appear to be feasible. Trial Registration Clinicaltrials.gov Identifier: NCT00688155

Smokers experience cognitive decrements during tobacco abstinence and boosts in performance upon resumption of smoking. Few studies have examined whether smoking cessation treatments such as transdermal nicotine ameliorate these decrements and/or attenuate the cognitive effects of smoking. Identifying the effects of nicotine on these tobacco-related changes in performance could guide the development of more efficacious treatments. The purpose of this double-blind, randomized, laboratory study was to use process-specific cognitive tasks to examine the effects of transdermal nicotine (TN) and tobacco smoking on attention and working memory in overnight-abstinent smokers (N=124; 54 women). Each participant completed four, 6.5-hour sessions corresponding to 0, 7, 14, or 21 mg TN doses, and smoked a single cigarette four hours after TN administration. Outcome measures were administered before and after smoking, and included tasks measuring attention (alerting, orienting, and executive function), working memory (verbal and spatial), and psychomotor function. Analysis of variance (p < .05) revealed that TN improved verbal and spatial working memory performance, as well as psychomotor function. Smoking, independent of TN dose, improved alerting, verbal working memory, and psychomotor function. Lastly, TN partially attenuated the effects of smoking on some working memory outcomes. These findings lend evidence to the idea that TN ameliorates some abstinence-related cognitive decrements and suggest that TN does not completely attenuate the cognitive effects of a concurrently smoked cigarette. Consequently, TN’s efficacy as a smoking cessation treatment might be improved should these limitations be better addressed by either modifying or supplementing existing treatments.

To examine the performance of the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status (TICS) for identifying participants appropriate for trials of physical activity and cognitive training interventions.Volunteers (N=343), ages 70-85 years, who were being recruited for a pilot clinical trial on approaches to prevent cognitive decline, were administered TICS and required to score ≥ 31 prior to an invitation to attend clinic-based assessments. The frequencies of contraindications for physical activity and cognitive training interventions were tallied for individuals grouped by TICS scores. Relationships between TICS scores and other measures of cognitive function were described by scatterplots and correlation coefficients.Eligibility criteria to identify candidates who were appropriate candidates for the trial interventions excluded 51.7% of the volunteers with TICS31. TICS scores above this range were not strongly related to cognition or attendance at screening visits, however overall enrollment yields were approximately half for participants with TICS=31 versus TICS=41, and increased in a graded fashion throughout the range of scores.Use of TICS to define eligibility criteria in trials of physical activity and cognitive training interventions may not be worthwhile in that many individuals with low scores would already be eliminated by intervention-specific criteria and the relationship of TICS with clinic-based tests of cognitive function among appropriate candidates for these interventions may be weak. TICS may be most useful in these trials to identify candidates for oversampling in order to obtain a balanced cohort of participants at risk for cognitive decline.

To determine if nicotine's effects are influenced by caffeine in nonsmoking, moderate-caffeine consuming individuals (N=20).The first 3 sessions included one of 3 randomly ordered, double-blind caffeine doses (0, 75, or 150 mg, oral [po]) and 2 single-blind nicotine gum doses (2 and 4 mg) in ascending order. The fourth session (single blind) repeated the 0 mg caffeine condition.Nicotine increased heart rate and subjective ratings indicative of aversive effects, and decreased reaction times. These effects were independent of caffeine dose and reliable across sessions.In nonsmokers, nicotine effects are not influenced by moderate caffeine doses.

The subjective and physiological effects of nicotine in nicotine-naive individuals are consistent across studies, though the cognitive effects are variable: Positive, negative, or no effects have been reported. Assessing specific cognitive processes (e.g., alerting, orienting, executive function, and phonological and visuospatial working memory) may help reduce this variability. This within-subject study (N = 20) was designed to assess the effect of nicotine gum (0, 2, or 4 mg) on subjective, physiological, and cognitive measures. Dose-dependent increases in dysphoria and heart rate were observed, though nicotine did not influence any aspect of attention or working memory. Future studies should take into account the difference in effect sizes for cognitive versus physiological/subjective measures and maximize power (e.g., increase sample size) accordingly.

clinics completed: 3 English and 3 Spanish. 32 participants completed 6month follow up. Phase 2 (nZ59) and formative evaluation are in progress. Conclusions: HEALS Phase 1 suggests that a six week lifestyle management program consisting of a 2-hour small group format, healthy lifestyle content, and led by an occupational therapist may be feasible for the proposed population. Phase 2 will confirm these notions.

Determining the areas of brain activity associated with cognitive processing has typically relied on the use of a subtraction paradigm, which is based on the premise that the neural processes underlying behavior are additive. If the additivity assumption is valid then brain regions associated with a semantic processing task should be the same regardless of how participants make a response. To investigate this proposition, participants underwent six PET scans, in which they made semantic or letter word judgments, responding “yes” or “no” in three different modes: mouse-clicking, spoken response, or silent thought. Analyses showed an increase in regional cerebral blood flow associated with semantic processing in the left inferior frontal cortex, anterior cingulate, and right cerebellum for all three response conditions. However, there was a significant interaction: the greatest increase was observed in the mouse-click condition and the weakest change seen with silent thought. Moreover, other areas of the brain were uniquely activated for each response mode. The results indicate that different areas of the brain were recruited for semantic processing depending on how participants had to organize their responses. Implications for the additivity assumption and methods of analysis to be used in conjunction with the subtraction technique are discussed.

Positron emission tomography (PET) was used to compare regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in young (mean 26 years) and old (mean 70 years) subjects while they were encoding, recognizing, and recalling word pairs. A multivariate partial-least-squares (PLS) analysis of the data was used to identify age-related neural changes associated with (1) encoding versus retrieval and (2) recognition versus recall. Young subjects showed higher activation than old subjects (1) in left prefrontal and occipito-temporal regions during encoding and (2) in right prefrontal and parietal regions during retrieval. Old subjects showed relatively higher activation than young subjects in several regions, including insular regions during encoding, cuneus/precuneus regions during recognition, and left prefrontal regions during recall. Frontal activity in young subjects was left-lateralized during encoding and right-lateralized during recall [hemispheric encoding/retrieval asymmetry (HERA)], whereas old adults showed little frontal activity during encoding and a more bilateral pattern of frontal activation during retrieval. In young subjects, activation in recall was higher than that in recognition in cerebellar and cingulate regions, whereas recognition showed higher activity in right temporal and parietal regions. In old subjects, the differences in blood flow between recall and recognition were smaller in these regions, yet more pronounced in other regions. Taken together, the results indicate that advanced age is associated with neural changes in the brain systems underlying encoding, recognition, and recall. These changes take two forms: (1) age-related decreases in local regional activity, which may signal less efficient processing by the old, and (2) age-related increases in activity, which may signal functional compensation.
