2. Numerical and Experimental Analysis of Buckling and Post-Buckling Behaviour of TWCFS Lipped Channel Section Members Subjected to Eccentric Compression.

Abstract

The paper presents a static analysis of the buckling and post-buckling state of thin-walled cold-formed steel (TWCFS) lipped channel section beam-columns subjected to eccentric compression. Eccentricity is taken into consideration relative to both major and minor principal axes. An analytical–numerical solution to the buckling and post-buckling problems is described. The solution is based on the theory of thin plates. Equations of equilibrium of section walls are derived from the principle of stationary energy. Then, to solve the problem, the finite difference (FDM) and Newton–Raphson methods are applied. Linear (buckling) and nonlinear (post-buckling) analyses are performed. As a result, pre- and post-buckling equilibrium paths are determined. Comparisons of the obtained numerical results, FE simulation results, and experimental test results are carried out and presented in comparative load-shortening diagrams. Additionally, a comparison of the buckling forces and buckling modes obtained from theoretical analysis and experiments is presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

International audience; Various interaction techniques have been developed for interactive 3D environments. This paper presents an up-to-date and comprehensive review of the state of the art of non-immersive interaction techniques for Navigation, Selection & Manipulation, and System Control, including a basic introduction to the topic, the challenges, and an examination of a number of popular approaches. We hope that this survey can aid both researchers and developers of interactive 3D applications in having a clearer overview of the topic and in particular can be useful for practitioners and researchers that are new to the field of interactive 3D graphics.

32. Hypertextualized Virtual Environments: Dual-Mode User Interface Design

Abstract

This thesis develops a novel strategy for accessing Hypertextualized Virtual Environments (HiVEs), integrated information spaces where symbolic (hypertext) and visual (3D graphics) data are simultaneously available and linked (e.g., 3D content on the Web). The work focuses on user interface design. It begins with the introduction of hypertext and the Web as well as 3D computer graphics and virtual environments; we present arguments for combining these mediums and outline our research and design approach to this topic. As a prerequisite to the effective user interface design is an understanding of the users and their tasks, we then focus on an understanding of the fundamental tasks users may engage in while exploring Web-based 3D virtual environments. We introduce a "taskonomy of 3D Web use", a simple taxonomy we use later to identify the tasks that the user interface for HiVEs must support. We then introduce a Dual-Mode user interface, an interface that has two modes between which a user can switch anytime: the driven by simple hypertext-based interactions hypertext "don't-make-me-think" mode, where a 3D scene is embedded in hypertext and the more immersive 3D "take-me-to-the-Wonderland" mode, which immerses the hypertextual annotations into the 3D scene; we also describe the interface's support for hypermedia and virtual environment tasks described in our taskonomy. Furthermore, we describe Copernicus, a wiki-type authoring environment allowing the rapid development of HiVEs, a testbed allowing for the experimentation and for the assessment of both hypertext and 3D modes of the Dual-Mode user interface. Our Dual-Mode user interface, implemented in Copernicus, was evaluated iteratively using several methods for usability studies. The evaluations illustrated that people like to use Copernicus and appreciate the interactive possibilities offered by its user interface. The results from the competitive user study suggest users performed better with the Dual-Mode user interface over alternatives.

Abstract

The use of the Internet for entertainment continues to grow. The success of rich media web portals, such as: YouTube, Flickr, or Google Maps proves that people look for more and more interactive experience on the Web. In this paper, we briefly report our previous work related to the human-computer interaction discipline: we describe 2- Layer Interface Paradigm (2LIP) - a new way for designing interactive 3D web applications, and its prototype implementation ¿ Copernicus, the 3D Encyclopedia. We present new possible applications of 2LIP, among others: personal 3D backgrounds, 3D applications in the touristic information and in the museums, interactive internet shopping, and commercials embedded into web portals. All propositions aforementioned give the idea of a new generation of the Web3D interfaces. Those interfaces can enrich interactive experience of people on the Web; at the same time, they remain simple and intuitive in use. peer-reviewed

Contributing to the body of research, problems of existing eLearning technologies are documented highlighting areas of definite improvement. 40. Experimental and Numerical Three-Point Bending Test for Sandwich Beams

Abstract

The article deals with an experimental investigation of mechanical properties of sandwich beams obtained from bending tests. The tested specimens consisted of foam or honeycomb core and face sheets made of aluminium alloys, plywood or composite material. The face sheets and the core were bonded with glue material. Beams of different dimensions, namely beam width, as well as core and face sheets thickness, were tested. Three point bending tests were carried out, which mid span deflections of the beam versus applied force were recorded. Experimental test results were compared with simulations on the basis of finite element method. The full, non-linear analysis, taking into account large displacements and using contact elements was performed. The obtained results are presented in load-deflection diagrams. Some conclusions concerning ultimate loads and failure behaviour of tested beams made of different materials have been derived.
