6. A method for accuracy of placement analysis on radiolucent polyether-ether-keton facial implants: A case series.

Abstract

Facial asymmetry is defined as a bilateral difference between facial components. Correction, often desired by the patient, can be performed with the aim of bone born patient-specific solid implants designed using 3D CAD software. This treatment is embedded in the daily practice of today's healthcare. However, an analysis of the implant's accuracy of placement has not been reported. This case series describes the accuracy analysis of bone born aesthetic facial implants manufactured out of polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK). The accuracy analysis was based on postoperative (cone beam) computed tomography ((CB)CT) data and preoperative 3D planning. The analysis showed a median entry point error of 0.7 mm (min: 0.1, max: 3.3, interquartile range: 0.78). The median maximal orientation error was 5.5° (min: 0.1, max: 36.8, interquartile range: 7.13). Both parameters showed an excellent intraobserver and interobserver agreement with an ICC above 0.84. The described cases show that the analysis method is an objective approach for determining the accuracy of PSI placement and indicates that these implants can be placed accurately on the osseous face. De academie stelt ook veel informatie online beschikbaar, er zijn chatgroepen, kennisportals en er is de online vraagbaak 'Vraag het Mousa'. Hoe is het zover gekomen? 27. Neurophysiological Factors in Human Information Processing Capacity

Abstract

What determines how well an individual can manage the complexity of information processing demands when several tasks have to be executed simultaneously? Various theoretical frameworks address the mechanisms of information processing and the changes that take place when processes become automated, and brain regions involved in various types of information processing have been identified, as well as sequences of events in the brain. The neurophysiological substrate of human information processing capacity, i.e. the amount that can be processed simultaneously, is, however, unresolved, as is the basis of inter-individual variability in capacity. Automatization of cognitive functions is known to increase capacity to process additional tasks, but behavioural indices of automatization are poor predictors of processing capacity in individuals. Automatization also leads to a decline of brain activity in the working memory system. In this study, we test the hypothesis that processing capacity is closely related to the way that the brain adjusts to practice of a single cognitive task, i.e. to the changes in neuronal activity that accompany automatization as measured with functional MRI (fMRI). Using a task that taxes the working memory system, and is sensitive to automatization, performance improved while activity in the network declined, as expected. The key finding is that the magnitude of automatization-induced reduction of activity in this system was a strong predictor for the ability to perform two different working memory tasks simultaneously (after scanning). It explained 60% of the variation in information processing capacity across individuals. In contrast, the behavioural measures of automatization did not predict this. We postulate that automatization involves at least two partially independent neurophysiological mechanisms, i.e. (i) streamlining of neuronal communication which improves performance on a single task; and (ii) functional trimming of neuronal ensembles which enhances the capacity to accommodate processing of additional tasks, potentially by facilitating rapid switching of instruction sets or contexts. Finally, this study shows that fMRI can provide information that predicts behavioural output, which is not provided by overt behavioural measures. (Contains 6 figures, and one table.)

Contains fulltext : 229342.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access), Three-dimensional stereophotogrammetry is commonly used to assess volumetric changes after facial procedures. A lack of clear landmarks in aesthetic regions complicates the reproduction of selected areas in sequential images. A three-dimensional volumetric analysis was developed based on a personalized aesthetic template. The accuracy and reproducibility of this method were assessed. Six female volunteers were photographed using the 3dMDtrio system according to a clinical protocol, twice at baseline (T1) and twice after 1year (T2). A styrofoam head was used as control. A standardized aesthetic template was morphed over the baseline images of the volunteers using a coherent point drift algorithm. The resulting personalized template was projected over all sequential images to assess surface area differences, volume differences, and root mean square errors. In 12 well-defined aesthetic areas, mean average surface area and volume differences between the two T1 images ranged from -7.6mm(2) to 10.1mm(2) and -0.11cm(3) to 0.13cm(3), respectively. T1 root mean square errors ranged between 0.24mm and 0.62mm (standard deviation 0.18-0.73mm). Comparable differences were found between the T2 images. An increase in volume between T1 and T2 was only observed for volunteers who gained in body weight. Personalized aesthetic templates are an accurate and reproducible method to assess changes in aesthetic areas.
