2. Quasiparticle effects in magnetic-field-resilient 3D transmons

Abstract

Recent research shows that quasiparticle-induced decoherence of superconducting qubits depends on the superconducting-gap asymmetry originating from the different thicknesses of the top and bottom films in Al/AlO$_x$/Al junctions. Magnetic field is a key tuning knob to investigate this dependence as it can change the superconducting gaps in situ. We present measurements of the parity-switching time of a field-resilient 3D transmon with in-plane field up to 0.41T. At low fields, small parity splitting requires qutrit pulse sequences for parity measurements. We measure a non-monotonic evolution of the parity lifetime with in-plane magnetic field, increasing up to 0.2T, followed by a decrease at higher fields. We demonstrate that the superconducting-gap asymmetry plays a crucial role in the observed behavior. At zero field, the qubit frequency is nearly resonant with the superconducting-gap difference, favoring the energy exchange with the quasiparticles and so enhancing the parity-switching rate. With a higher magnetic field, the qubit frequency decreases and gets detuned from the gap difference, causing the initial increase of the parity lifetime, while photon-assisted qubit transitions increase, producing the subsequent decrease at higher fields. Besides giving a deeper insight into the parity-switching mechanism in conventional transmon qubits, we establish that Al-AlO$_x$-Al JJs could be used in architectures for the parity-readout and manipulation of topological qubits based on Majorana zero modes.

Abstract

We investigate the effect of magnetic field on a photonic-crystal Josephson traveling-wave parametric amplifier (TWPA). We show that the observed change in photonic bandgap and plasma frequency of the TWPA can be modeled by considering the suppression of the critical current in the Josephson junctions (JJs) of the TWPA due to the Fraunhofer effect and closing of the superconducting gap. Accounting for the JJ geometry is crucial for understanding the field dependence. In one in-plane direction, the TWPA bandgap can be shifted by 2 GHz using up to 60 mT of field, without losing gain or bandwidth, showing that TWPAs without SQUIDs can be field tunable. In the other in-plane direction, the magnetic field is perpendicular to the larger side of the Josephson junctions, so the Fraunhofer effect has a smaller period. This larger side of the JJs is modulated to create the bandgap. The field interacts more strongly with the larger junctions, and as a result, the TWPA bandgap closes and reopens as the field increases, causing the TWPA to become severely compromised already at 2 mT. A slightly higher operating limit of 5 mT is found in out-of-plane field, for which the TWPA's response is hysteretic. These measurements reveal the requirements for magnetic shielding needed to use TWPAs in experiments where high fields at the sample are required; we show that with magnetic shields we can operate the TWPA while applying over 2 T to the sample.

4. The sulphur species in hot rocky exoplanet atmospheres

Abstract

The first JWST observations of hot Jupiters showed an unexpected detection of SO2 in their hydrogen-rich atmospheres. We investigate how much sulphur can be expected in the atmospheres of rocky exoplanets and which sulphur molecules can be expected to be most abundant and detectable by transmission spectroscopy. We run thermo-chemical equilibrium models at the crust-atmosphere interface, considering surface temperatures 500 to 5000 K, surface pressures 1 to 100 bar, and various sets of element abundances based on common rock compositions. Between 1000 K and 2000 K, we find gaseous sulphur concentrations of up to 25 percent above the rock in our models. SO2, SO, H2S and S2 are by far the most abundant sulphur molecules. SO2 shows potentially detectable features in transmission spectra at about 4 micron, between 7 and 8 micron, and beyond 15 micron. In contrast, the sometimes abundant H2S molecule is difficult to detect in these spectra, which are mostly dominated by H2O and CO2. Although the molecule PS only occurs with concentrations below 300 ppm, it can cause a strong absorption feature between 0.3 and 0.65 micron in some of our models for high surface pressures. Abstract

The mode-coupling theory of the glass transition (MCT) has been at the forefront of fundamental glass research for decades, yet the theory's underlying approximations remain obscure. Here we quantify and critically assess the effect of each MCT approximation separately. Using Brownian dynamics simulations, we compute the memory kernel predicted by MCT after each approximation in its derivation, and compare it with the exact one. We find that some often-criticized approximations are in fact very accurate, while the opposite is true for others, providing new guiding cues for further theory development.

8. Field-induced phase transitions of the Kitaev material $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ probed by thermal expansion and magnetostriction

Abstract

High-resolution thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements were performed on single crystals of $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ in magnetic fields applied parallel to the Ru-Ru bonds. The length changes were measured in the direction perpendicular to the honeycomb planes. Our data show clear thermodynamic characteristics for the field-induced phase transition at the critical field $\mu_0H_{c1} = 7.8(2)$ T where the antiferromagnetic zigzag order is suppressed. At higher fields, a kink in the magnetostriction coefficient signals an additional phase transition around $\mu_0H_{c2} \approx 11$ T. The extracted Gr\"uneisen parameter shows typical hallmarks for quantum criticality near $H_{c1}$, but also displays anomalous behavior above $H_{c1}$. We compare our experimental data with linear spin-wave calculations employing a minimal Kitaev-Heisenberg model in the semiclassical limit. Most of the salient features are in agreement with each other, however, the peculiar features in the high-field region above $H_{c1}$ cannot be accounted for in our modelling and hence suggest a genuine quantum nature. Abstract

Frustrated magnets with strong spin-orbit coupling promise to host topological states of matter, with fractionalized excitations and emergent gauge fields. Kitaev's proposal for a honeycomb-lattice Majorana spin liquid has triggered an intense search for experimental realizations, with bond-dependent Ising interaction being the essential building block. A prime candidate is $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ whose phase diagram in a magnetic field is, however, not understood to date. Here we present conclusive experimental evidence for a novel field-induced ordered phase in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$, sandwiched between the zigzag and quantum disordered phases at low and high fields, respectively. We provide a detailed theoretical study of the relevant effective spin model which we show to display a field-induced intermediate phase as well. We fully characterize the intermediate phase within this model, including its complex spin structure, and pinpoint the parameters relevant to $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ based on the experimentally observed critical fields. Most importantly, our study connects the physics of $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ to that of the Kitaev-$\Gamma$ model, which displays a quantum spin liquid phase in zero field, and hence reveals the spin liquid whose signatures have been detected in a variety of dynamical probes of $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$., Comment: This article is superseded by arXiv:2012.15258, which presents neutron diffraction data obtained after this preprint was posted. Abstract

$\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ has attracted enormous attention since it has been proposed as a prime candidate to study fractionalized magnetic excitations akin to Kitaev's honeycomb-lattice spin liquid. We have performed a detailed specific-heat investigation at temperatures down to $0.4$ K in applied magnetic fields up to $9$ T for fields parallel to the $ab$ plane. We find a suppression of the zero-field antiferromagnetic order, together with an increase of the low-temperature specific heat, with increasing field up to $\mu_0H_c\approx 6.9$ T. Above $H_c$, the magnetic contribution to the low-temperature specific heat is strongly suppressed, implying the opening of a spin-excitation gap. Our data point toward a field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) at $H_c$; this is supported by universal scaling behavior near $H_c$. Remarkably, the data also reveal the existence of a small characteristic energy scale well below $1$~meV above which the excitation spectrum changes qualitatively. Abstract

Interacting fermions on a lattice can develop strong quantum correlations, which lie at the heart of the classical intractability of many exotic phases of matter. Seminal efforts are underway in the control of artificial quantum systems, that can be made to emulate the underlying Fermi-Hubbard models. Electrostatically confined conduction band electrons define interacting quantum coherent spin and charge degrees of freedom that allow all-electrical pure-state initialisation and readily adhere to an engineerable Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian. Until now, however, the substantial electrostatic disorder inherent to solid state has made attempts at emulating Fermi-Hubbard physics on solid-state platforms few and far between. Here, we show that for gate-defined quantum dots, this disorder can be suppressed in a controlled manner. Novel insights and a newly developed semi-automated and scalable toolbox allow us to homogeneously and independently dial in the electron filling and nearest-neighbour tunnel coupling. Bringing these ideas and tools to fruition, we realize the first detailed characterization of the collective Coulomb blockade transition, which is the finite-size analogue of the interaction-driven Mott metal-to-insulator transition. As automation and device fabrication of semiconductor quantum dots continue to improve, the ideas presented here show how quantum dots can be used to investigate the physics of ever more complex many-body states.

22. Understanding end-user acceptance of ‘new sanitation’: the path towards a circular urban water system : Research within KWR’s ANCHOR project

Dit onderzoek focust zich op de acceptatie van eindgebruikers van 'nieuwe sanitatie' systemen in twee woonwijken. Dit zijn systemen waarin gebruik gemaakt wordt van waterhergebruik- en waterbesparingstechnieken. Verschillende niveaus van acceptatie worden gemeten. Tot slot wordt onderzocht welke strategieën betrokken professionals kunnen toepassen om acceptatie onder eindgebruikers te vergroten., The transition towards circular and water-wise cities requires the implementation of sanitation systems that make use of water-saving techniques, as well as resourceful use of waste streams. Previous research has identified strategies that professionals involved in the development and implementation of such ‘new sanitation systems’ can deploy to legitimize the innovation to end-users and to improve acceptance. The influence that such legitimation strategies could have on end-user acceptance, however, is hypothetical. This research explored the current state of end-user acceptance and the legitimation strategies deployed by professionals in two new sanitation projects within KWR’s ANCHOR project: the neighborhoods ‘SUPERLOCAL’ in Kerkrade (NL) and ‘De Nieuwe Dokken’ in Ghent (BE). This research aimed to explore the role that legitimation strategies have in shaping end-user acceptance. Coded interview transcripts formed the main data source. The hypothesized influence that legitimation strategies could have on end-user acceptance requires more nuance and does not always establish itself in real-life situations. Many other factors should be considered as well. Several limitations negatively impact the reliability of these findings. However, considering its explorative nature, this research provides valuable insights and understanding into the role of legitimation strategies in shaping end-user acceptance of new sanitation systems.

Abstract

Importance: Blood transfusions are commonly administered to patients with acute brain injury. The optimal hemoglobin transfusion threshold is uncertain in this patient population. Objective: To assess the impact on neurological outcome of 2 different hemoglobin thresholds to guide red blood cell transfusions in patients with acute brain injury. Design, setting, and participants: Multicenter, phase 3, parallel-group, investigator-initiated, pragmatic, open-label randomized clinical trial conducted in 72 intensive care units across 22 countries. Eligible patients had traumatic brain injury, aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, or intracerebral hemorrhage; hemoglobin values below 9 g/dL within the first 10 days after injury; and an expected intensive care unit stay of at least 72 hours. Enrollment occurred between September 1, 2017, and December 31, 2022. The last day of follow-up was June 30, 2023. Interventions: Eight hundred fifty patients were randomly assigned to undergo a liberal (transfusion triggered by hemoglobin <9 g/dL; n = 408) or a restrictive (transfusion triggered by hemoglobin <7 g/dL; n = 442) transfusion strategy over a 28-day period. Main outcomes and measures: The primary outcome was occurrence of an unfavorable neurological outcome, defined as a Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended score between 1 and 5, at 180 days following randomization. There were 14 prespecified serious adverse events, including occurrence of cerebral ischemia after randomization. Results: Among 820 patients who completed the trial (mean age, 51 years; 376 [45.9%] women), 806 had available data on the primary outcome, 393 in the liberal strategy group and 413 in the restrictive strategy group. The liberal strategy group received a median of 2 (IQR, 1-3) units of blood, and the restrictive strategy group received a median of 0 (IQR, 0-1) units of blood, with an absolute mean difference of 1.0 unit (95% CI, 0.87-1.12 units). Abstract

Accepting defeat in the aftermath of elections is crucial for the stability of democracies. But in times of intense polarization, the voluntary consent of electoral losers seems less obvious. In this paper, I study whether affective and perceived ideological polarization amplify the winner–loser gap in political support. Using multilevel growth curve modelling on pre and post-election panel data from the British Election Study Internet Panel collected during the 2015 and 2019 UK general elections, I show that the winner–loser gap is indeed more pronounced amongst voters with higher levels of affective and perceived ideological polarization. Moreover, the results illustrate that polarized voters experience a stark decrease in their support for the political system following their electoral loss. Given the high and, in some Western democracies, rising polarization levels, these findings have important implications for losers’ consent and the stability of democracies in election times. Item does not contain fulltext, Treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), especially nilotinib, often results in hyperglycemia, which may further increase cardiovascular disease risk in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The mechanism underlying the TKI-induced glucose dysregulation is not clear. TKIs are suggested to affect insulin secretion but also insulin sensitivity of peripheral tissue has been proposed to play a role in the pathogenesis of TKI-induced hyperglycemia. Here, we aimed to assess whether skeletal muscle glucose uptake and insulin responses are altered in nondiabetic patients with CML receiving TKI treatment. After a glycogen-depleted exercise bout, an intravenous glucose bolus (0.3 g/kg body weight) was administered to monitor 2-h glucose tolerance and insulin response in 14 patients with CML receiving nilotinib, 14 patients with CML receiving imatinib, and 14 non-CML age- and gender-matched controls. A dynamic [(18)F]-FDG PET scan during a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp was performed in a subgroup of 12 male patients with CML to assess m. quadriceps glucose uptake. We showed that patients with CML treated with nilotinib have an increased insulin response to intravenous glucose administration after muscle glycogen-depleted exercise. Despite the increased insulin response to glucose administration in patients with CML receiving nilotinib, glucose disappearance rates were significantly slower in nilotinib-treated patients when compared with controls in the first 15 min after glucose administration. Although [(18)F]-FDG uptake in m. quadriceps was not different, patients receiving nilotinib showed a trend toward decreased glucose infusion rates during euglycemic clamping when compared with patients receiving imatinib. Item does not contain fulltext, BACKGROUND: Statin use may exacerbate exercise-induced skeletal muscle injury caused by reduced coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) levels, which are postulated to produce mitochondrial dysfunction. OBJECTIVES: We determined the effect of prolonged moderate-intensity exercise on markers of muscle injury in statin users with and without statin-associated muscle symptoms. We also examined the association between leukocyte CoQ10 levels and muscle markers, muscle performance, and reported muscle symptoms. METHODS: Symptomatic (n = 35; age 62 ± 7 years) and asymptomatic statin users (n = 34; age 66 ± 7 years) and control subjects (n = 31; age 66 ± 5 years) walked 30, 40, or 50 km/d for 4 consecutive days. Muscle injury markers (lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase, myoglobin, cardiac troponin I, and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide), muscle performance, and reported muscle symptoms were assessed at baseline and after exercise. Leukocyte CoQ10 was measured at baseline. RESULTS: All muscle injury markers were comparable at baseline (P > 0.05) and increased following exercise (P < 0.001), with no differences in the magnitude of exercise-induced elevations among groups (P > 0.05). Muscle pain scores were higher at baseline in symptomatic statin users (P < 0.001) and increased similarly in all groups following exercise (P < 0.001). Muscle relaxation time increased more in symptomatic statin users than in control subjects following exercise (P = 0.035). CoQ10 levels did not differ among symptomatic (2.3 nmol/U; IQR: 1.8-2.9 nmol/U), asymptomatic statin users (2.1 nmol/U; IQR: 1.8-2.5 nmol/U), and control subjects (2.1 nmol/U; IQR: 1.8-2.3 nmol/U; P = 0.20), and did not relate to muscle injury markers, fatigue resistance, or reported muscle symptoms. 43. Surrogate models: a solution for real-time inundation forecasting? : Surrogate modelling for three case studies in the Netherlands

Abstract

The Netherlands is facing an increased risk of pluvial flooding, mainly due to the expected rise in the frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall events caused by climate change. Recent events have highlighted the importance of accurate flood forecasting to minimize damage. Hydrological inundation models are crucial in flood mitigation as they support water managers in an operational setting by predicting the size and timing of a flooding event, such that they can make informed decisions and implement appropriate measures (e.g. adjusting weir levels, alerting relevant parties). To ensure the operational usability of hydrological inundation models, they must meet certain criteria. Detailed hydrological inundation models provide accurate results but have long computational times, making them impractical for the operational context. Surrogate models have a shorter computational time by approximating the detailed hydrological inundation model. Surrogate models may offer a solution, but their quality and added value in an operational setting compared to existing hydrological models are yet to be determined. In this study, the added value of surrogate models in an operational setting compared to the W2O model is researched. Three cases studies are selected to evaluate the hydrological inundation models’ compliance with the end-users’ requirements. These case studies include: the municipality of Amersfoort who would like to have an accurate forecast of the locations where inundation is expected within the city, the municipality of Tilburg who would like to have an accurate forecast of urban surface inundation, and Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland who would like to know probability of flooding when the interaction between open waters (surface waters) and inundation on surface level is included.

If UC could not be identified, proxies were used.Results UC were calculated for police, fire brigade, vandalism, prison, police custody, simple and serious theft, minor and serious vandalism of real estate, and legal fees in court.Conclusion The lack of UC for services in the criminal justice sector in Germany makes this work important for health economic evaluations from a societal perspective. The usability of the developed UC outside of health economics, such as forensic psychiatry, emphasizes the relevance of this work.
