We report the discovery and multiwavelength followup of LEDA 1313424 ("Bullseye"), a collisional ring galaxy (CRG) with nine readily-identified rings -- the most so far reported for a CRG. These data shed new light on the rapid, multi-ring phase of CRG evolution. Using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging, we identify and measure nine ring structures, several of which are "piled up" near the center of the galaxy, while others extend to tens of kpc scales. We also identify faint patches of emission at large radii ($\sim$70 kpc) in the HST imaging, and confirm the association of this emission with the galaxy via spectroscopy. Deep ground based imaging using the Dragonfly Telephoto Array finds evidence that this patch of emission is part of an older, fading ring from the collision. We find that the locations of the detected rings are an excellent match to predictions from analytic theory, if the galaxy was a 10-ring system whose outermost ring has faded away. We identify the likely impacting galaxy via Keck/KCWI spectroscopy, finding evidence for gas extending between it and the Bullseye. The overall size of this galaxy rivals that of known Giant Low Surface Brightness Galaxies (GLSBs) such as Malin I, lending credence to the hypothesis that CRGs can evolve into GLSBs as their rings expand and fade. Analysis of the HI content in this galaxy from ALFALFA finds significantly elevated neutral hydrogen with respect to the galaxy's stellar mass, another feature in alignment with GLSB systems., Comment: Published in ApJL

The discovery of quiescent, dark matter (DM)-deficient ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) with overluminous globular clusters (GCs) has challenged galaxy formation models within the Lambda Cold Dark Matter ($\Lambda$CDM) cosmological paradigm. Previously, such galaxies were only identified in the NGC 1052 group, raising the possibility that they are the result of unique, group-specific processes, and limiting their broader significance. The recent identification of FCC 224, a putative DM-deficient UDG on the outskirts of the Fornax Cluster, suggests that such galaxies are not confined to the NGC 1052 group but rather represent a broader phenomenon. We aim to investigate the DM content of FCC 224 and to explore its similarities to the DM-free dwarfs in the NGC 1052 group, DF2 and DF4, to determine whether or not it belongs to the same class of DM-deficient UDGs. We use high-resolution Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) spectroscopy to study the kinematics, stellar populations, and GC system of FCC 224, enabling direct comparisons with DF2 and DF4. We find that FCC 224 is also DM-deficient and exhibits a distinct set of traits shared with DF2 and DF4, including slow and prolate rotation, quiescence in low-density environments, coeval formation of stars and GCs, flat stellar population gradients, a top-heavy GC luminosity function, and monochromatic GCs. These shared characteristics signal the existence of a previously unrecognized class of DM-deficient dwarf galaxies. We study the quiescent ultra-diffuse galaxy FCC 224 in the Fornax cluster using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging, motivated by peculiar properties of its globular cluster (GC) system revealed in shallower imaging. The surface brightness fluctuation distance of FCC 224 measured from HST is $18.6 \pm 2.7$ Mpc, consistent with the Fornax Cluster distance. We use Prospector to infer the stellar population from a combination of multi-wavelength photometry (HST, ground-based, WISE) and Keck Cosmic Web Imager spectroscopy. The galaxy has a mass-weighted age of $\sim$ 10 Gyr, metallicity [M/H] of $\sim -1.25$ dex, and a very short formation $e$-folding time of $\tau \sim 0.3$ Gyr. Its 12 candidate GCs exhibit highly homogeneous $g_{\rm 475}-I_{\rm 814}$ colors, merely 0.04 mag bluer than the diffuse starlight, which supports a single burst formation scenario for this galaxy. We confirm a top-heavy GC luminosity function, similar to the two dark matter deficient galaxies NGC 1052-DF2 and DF4. However, FCC 224 differs from those galaxies with relatively small GC sizes of $\sim$ 3 pc ($\sim 35\%$ smaller than typical for other dwarfs), and with radial mass segregation in its GC system. We are not yet able to identify a formation scenario to explain all of the GC properties in FCC 224. Diffuse Galactic cirrus, or Diffuse Galactic Light (DGL), can be a prominent component in the background of deep wide-field imaging surveys. The DGL provides unique insights into the physical and radiative properties of dust grains in our Milky Way, and it also serves as a contaminant on deep images, obscuring the detection of background sources such as low surface brightness galaxies. However, it is challenging to disentangle the DGL from other components of the night sky. In this paper, we present a technique for the photometric characterization of Galactic cirrus, based on (1) extraction of its filamentary or patchy morphology and (2) incorporation of color constraints obtained from Planck thermal dust models. Our decomposition method is illustrated using a $\sim$10 deg$^2$ imaging dataset obtained by the Dragonfly Telephoto Array, and its performance is explored using various metrics which characterize the flatness of the sky background. As a concrete application of the technique, we show how removal of cirrus allows low surface brightness galaxies to be identified on cirrus-rich images. We present Hubble Space Telescope ACS/WFC and WFC3/UVIS imaging for a sample of 50 low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies in the $\sim$10$^{15}$ M$_{\odot}$ Perseus cluster, which were originally identified in ground-based imaging. We measure the structural properties of these galaxies and estimate the total number of globular clusters (GCs) they host. Around half of our sample galaxies meet the strict definition of an ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG), while the others are UDG-like but are either somewhat more compact or slightly brighter. A small number of galaxies reveal systems with many tens of GCs, rivalling some of the richest GC systems known around UDGs in the Coma cluster. We find the sizes of rich GC systems, in terms of their half-number radii, extending to $\sim$1.2 times the half-light radii of their host galaxy on average. The mean colours of the GC systems are the same, within the uncertainties, as those of their host galaxy stars. This suggests that GCs and galaxy field stars may have formed at the same epoch from the same enriched gas. It may also indicate a significant contribution from disrupted GCs to the stellar component of the host galaxy as might be expected in the 'failed galaxy' formation scenario for UDGs., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present \textsc{Mathpop}, a novel method to infer the globular cluster (GC) counts in ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) and low-surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs). Many known UDGs have a surprisingly high ratio of GC number to surface brightness. However, standard methods to infer GC counts in UDGs face various challenges, such as photometric measurement uncertainties, GC membership uncertainties, and assumptions about the GC luminosity functions (GCLFs). \textsc{Mathpop} tackles these challenges using the mark-dependent thinned point process, enabling joint inference of the spatial and magnitude distributions of GCs. In doing so, \textsc{Mathpop} allows us to infer and quantify the uncertainties in both GC counts and GCLFs with minimal assumptions. As a precursor to \textsc{Mathpop}, we also address the data uncertainties coming from the selection process of GC candidates: we obtain probabilistic GC candidates instead of the traditional binary classification based on the color--magnitude diagram. We apply \textsc{Mathpop} to 40 LSBGs in the Perseus cluster using GC catalogs from a \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} imaging program. We then compare our results to those from an independent study using the standard method. We further calibrate and validate our approach through extensive simulations. Our approach reveals two LSBGs having GCLF turnover points much brighter than the canonical value with Bayes' factor being $\sim4.5$ and $\sim2.5$, respectively. An additional crude maximum-likelihood estimation shows that their GCLF TO points are approximately $0.9$~mag and $1.1$~mag brighter than the canonical value, with $p$-value $\sim 10^{-8}$ and $\sim 10^{-5}$, respectively., Comment: 8 figures, 5 tables; submitted to ApJ, comments are welcomed

Two low surface brightness (LSB) dwarf galaxies were identified recently as having little or no dark matter (DM), provoking widespread interest in their formation histories. These galaxies also host populous systems of star clusters that are on average larger and more luminous than typical globular clusters (GCs). We report an initial attempt to identify new candidate DM-deficient dwarfs via their unusual GC systems. Using a large catalog of LSB galaxies from the Dark Energy Survey, we inspect their Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey (DECaLS) imaging and identify FCC 224 as a candidate found on the outskirts of the Fornax cluster. We analyze the GC system using DECaLS and archival Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 imaging, and find an apparent population of overluminous GCs. The Dragonfly Telephoto Array employs a unique design to detect very large and diffuse galaxies, which might be missed with conventional telescopes. The Dragonfly Ultrawide Survey (DFUWS) is a new wide-field survey which will cover 10,000 deg$^2$ of the northern sky, and it provides an ideal dataset to find these large diffuse galaxies. From 3100 deg$^2$ of DFUWS data, we identified eleven large, low surface brightness galaxies as a pilot sample for spectroscopic follow-up. These are the largest galaxies in the examined area that appear smooth and isolated, with effective radii of 12"-27". Eight are below 24 $\mathrm{mag\,arcsec^{-2}}$ in central $g$-band surface brightness. Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) spectra of the diffuse light show that all eleven galaxies in this sample are quiescent, and seven qualify as ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs). Eight galaxies have distances between 15 and 30 Mpc, while the other three are in the Pegasus cluster at 50 Mpc. Their spectra show evidence of a $\sim 1$Gyr old stellar population in addition to an even older stellar population. The intermediate-age component is present in group and satellite galaxies but not in the Pegasus cluster UDGs. All galaxies in this sample are detected in both Dragonfly and Legacy imaging, and the sample partially overlaps with existing UDG catalogs. This pilot sample provides an excellent training set for our analysis of the upcoming full 10,000 deg$^2$ DFUWS data, from which we may expect to discover even larger, previously-unknown galaxies., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

Observational surveys have found that the dynamical masses of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) correlate with the richness of their globular cluster (GC) system. This could be explained if GC-rich galaxies formed in more massive dark matter haloes. We use simulations of galaxies and their GC systems from the E-MOSAICS project to test whether the simulations reproduce such a trend. We find that GC-rich simulated galaxies in galaxy groups have enclosed masses that are consistent with the dynamical masses of observed GC-rich UDGs. However, simulated GC-poor galaxies in galaxy groups have higher enclosed masses than those observed. We argue that GC-poor UDGs with low stellar velocity dispersions are discs observed nearly face on, such that their true mass is underestimated by observations. Using the simulations, we show that galactic star-formation conditions resulting in dispersion-supported stellar systems also leads to efficient GC formation. Conversely, conditions leading to rotationally-supported discs leads to inefficient GC formation. This result may explain why early-type galaxies typically have richer GC systems than late-type galaxies. This is also supported by comparisons of stellar axis ratios and GC specific frequencies in observed dwarf galaxy samples, which show GC-rich systems are consistent with being spheroidal, while GC-poor systems are consistent with being discs. We use spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting to place constraints on the stellar populations of 59 ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the low-to-moderate density fields of the MATLAS survey. We use the routine PROSPECTOR, coupled with archival data in the optical from DECaLS, and near- and mid-infrared imaging from WISE, to recover the stellar masses, ages, metallicities and star formation timescales of the UDGs. We find that a subsample of the UDGs lies within the scatter of the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) for local classical dwarfs. However, another subsample is more metal-poor, being consistent with the evolving MZR at high-redshift. We investigate UDG positioning trends in the mass-metallicity plane as a function of surface brightness, effective radius, axis ratio, local volume density, mass-weighted age, star formation timescale, globular cluster (GC) counts and GC specific frequency. We find that our sample of UDGs can be separated into two main classes. Class A: Comprised of UDGs with lower stellar masses, prolonged star formation histories (SFHs), more elongated, inhabiting less dense environments, hosting fewer GCs, younger, consistent with the classical dwarf MZR, and fainter. Class B: UDGs with higher stellar masses, rapid SFHs, rounder, inhabiting the densest of our probed environments, hosting on average the most numerous GC systems, older, consistent with the high-redshift MZR (i.e., consistent with early-quenching), and brighter. The combination of these properties suggests that UDGs of Class A are consistent with a `puffed-up dwarf' formation scenario, while UDGs of Class B seem to be better explained by `failed galaxy' scenarios., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 19 pages (+6 of appendices), 10 figures, 5 tables

Unbiased sky background modeling is crucial for the analysis of deep wide-field images, but it remains a major challenge in low surface brightness astronomy. Traditional image processing algorithms are often designed to produce artificially flat backgrounds, erasing astrophysically meaningful structures. In this paper, we present three ideas that can be combined to produce wide-field astronomical data that preserve accurate representations of the background sky: (1) Use of all-sky infrared/sub-mm data to remove the large-scale time-varying components while leaving the scattered light from Galactic cirrus intact, with the assumptions of (a) the underlying background has little power on small scales, and (b) the Galactic cirrus in the field is optically thin on large scales; (2) Censoring of frames contaminated by anomalously prominent wings in the wide-angle point-spread function; and (3) Incorporation of spatial covariance in image stacking that controls the local background consistency. We demonstrate these methods using example datasets obtained with the Dragonfly Telephoto Array, but these general techniques are prospective to be applied to improve sky models in data obtained from other wide-field imaging surveys, including those from the upcoming Vera Rubin Telescope., Comment: 28 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Prompted by the many controversial claims involving the NGC 1052 group, including that it hosts two dark matter-free galaxies with overluminous and monochromatic globular cluster (GC) systems, here we map out the large-scale structure (LSS) of GCs over the entire group. To recover the LSS, we use archival optical CFHT imaging data. We recover two GC density maps, one based on universal photometric properties of GCs from simple stellar population models, and one based on the properties of spectroscopically confirmed GCs in DF2 and DF4 (the two dwarf galaxies with overluminous GC populations). Both selection methods reveal overdensities around the massive galaxies in the group, as well as around NGC 1052 itself, that are coincident with the positions of previously identified stellar streams and tidal features. No intragroup GCs are found connecting these structures to any of the dwarf galaxies. We find, however, two other dwarfs in the group hosting GC systems. These include RCP32 with 2 GCs with ages equivalent to the GCs around NGC 1052, and DF9 with 3 GCs with ages similar to the GCs around DF2 and DF4. We conclude that the GC distribution in the group does not strongly support any formation scenario in particular. It favours, nonetheless, scenarios relying on galaxy-galaxy interactions and on the coeval formation of GCs around the DM-free dwarf galaxies. Climate change and the resulting increased drought frequencies pose considerable threats to forest herb populations, especially when compounded by additional environmental challenges. Specifically, habitat fragmentation may disrupt climate adaptation and cause shifts in mating systems. To examine this, we conducted a garden experiment with Primula elatior offspring from 24 populations across a climate and landscape fragmentation gradient. We evaluated vegetative, regulatory, and reproductive traits under different soil moisture regimes, assessing local adaptation and phenotypic plasticity. We also conducted a field study in 60 populations along the same gradient to examine potential breakdown of reciprocal herkogamy. Our results showed an evolutionary shift from drought avoidance in southern populations to drought tolerance in northern populations for large, connected populations. However, fragmentation disrupted climate clines and adaptive responses to drought in key traits related to growth, biomass allocation and water regulation. Our findings also indicate the beginning of an evolutionary breakdown in reciprocal herkogamy. These disruptions resulted in significantly reduced flowering investment, especially in southern fragmented populations. These findings provide new evidence of how habitat fragmentation disrupts climate adaptation and drought tolerance in Primula elatior, emphasizing the need to account for habitat fragmentation in conservation strategies to preserve resilient forest herb populations amidst global changes.

We investigate the isolated, quiescent ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) DGSAT I and its globular cluster (GC) system using two orbits of Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys imaging in the F606W and F814W filters. This is the first study of GCs around a UDG in a low-density environment. DGSAT I was previously found to host an irregular blue low surface brightness clump, that we confirm as very likely belonging to the galaxy rather than being a chance projection, and represents a recent episode of star formation (${\sim}500~\mathrm{Myr}$) that challenges some UDG formation scenarios. We select GC candidates based on colours and magnitudes, and construct a self consistent model of the GC radial surface density profile along with the background. We find a half-number radius of $R_\mathrm{GC} = 2.7\pm0.1~\mathrm{kpc}$ (more compact than the diffuse starlight) and a total of $12 \pm 2$ GCs. The total mass fraction in GCs is relatively high, supporting an overmassive dark matter halo as also implied by the high velocity dispersion previously measured. The GCs extend to higher luminosities than expected, and have colours that are unusually similar to their host galaxy colour, with a very narrow spread--all of which suggest an early, intense burst of cluster formation. The nature and origin of this galaxy remain puzzling, but the most likely scenario is a "failed galaxy" that formed relatively few stars for its halo mass, and could be related to cluster UDGs whose size and quiescence pre-date their infall., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We introduce a new method for detecting ultra-diffuse galaxies by searching for over-densities in intergalactic globular cluster populations. Our approach is based on an application of the log-Gaussian Cox process, which is a commonly used model in the spatial statistics literature but rarely used in astronomy. This method is applied to the globular cluster data obtained from the PIPER survey, a \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} imaging program targeting the Perseus cluster. We successfully detect all confirmed ultra-diffuse galaxies with known globular cluster populations in the survey. We also identify a potential galaxy that has no detected diffuse stellar content. Preliminary analysis shows that it is unlikely to be merely an accidental clump of globular clusters or other objects. If confirmed, this system would be the first of its kind. Simulations are used to assess how the physical parameters of the globular cluster systems within ultra-diffuse galaxies affect their detectability using our method. We quantify the correlation of the detection probability with the total number of globular clusters in the galaxy and the anti-correlation with increasing half-number radius of the globular cluster system. It is clear that within the class of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) there is an extreme range in the richness of their associated globular cluster (GC) systems. Here, we report the structural properties of five UDGs in the Perseus cluster based on deep Subaru / Hyper Suprime-Cam imaging. Three appear GC-poor and two appear GC-rich. One of our sample, PUDG\_R24, appears to be undergoing quenching and is expected to fade into the UDG regime within the next $\sim0.5$ Gyr. We target this sample with Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) spectroscopy to investigate differences in their dark matter halos, as expected from their differing GC content. Our spectroscopy measures both recessional velocities, confirming Perseus cluster membership, and stellar velocity dispersions, to measure dynamical masses within their half-light radius. We supplement our data with that from the literature to examine trends in galaxy parameters with GC system richness. We do not find the correlation between GC numbers and UDG phase space positioning expected if GC-rich UDGs environmentally quench at high redshift. We do find GC-rich UDGs to have higher velocity dispersions than GC-poor UDGs on average, resulting in greater dynamical mass within the half-light radius. We describe the goals and first results of a Program for Imaging of the PERseus cluster of galaxies (PIPER). The first phase of the program builds on imaging of fields obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ACS/WFC and WFC3/UVIS cameras. Our PIPER target fields with HST include major early-type galaxies including the active central giant NGC 1275; known Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies; and the Intracluster Medium. The resulting two-color photometry in F475W and F814W reaches deep enough to resolve and measure the globular cluster (GC) populations in the Perseus member galaxies. Here we present initial results for eight pairs of outer fields that confirm the presence of Intergalactic GCs (IGCs) in fields as distant as 740 kpc from the Perseus center (40\% of the virial radius of the cluster). Roughly 90% of these IGCs are identifiably blue (metal-poor) but there is a clear trace of a red (metal-rich) component as well, even at these very remote distances., Comment: In press for The Astrophysical Journal

Large low surface brightness galaxies have recently been found to be abundant in nearby galaxy clusters. In this paper, we investigate these ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the six Hubble Frontier Fields galaxy clusters: Abell 2744, MACSJ0416.1$-$2403, MACSJ0717.5$+$3745, MACSJ1149.5$+$2223, Abell S1063 and Abell 370. These are the most massive ($1$-$3 \times 10^{15}~M_\odot$) and distant ($0.308 < z < 0.545$) systems in which this class of galaxy has yet been discovered. We estimate that the clusters host of the order of ${\sim}$200-1400 UDGs inside the virial radius ($R_{200}$), consistent with the UDG abundance halo-mass relation found in the local universe, and suggests that UDGs may be formed in clusters. Within each cluster, however, we find that UDGs are not evenly distributed. Instead their projected spatial distributions are lopsided, and they are deficient in the regions of highest mass density as traced by gravitational lensing. While the deficiency of UDGs in central regions is not surprising, the lopsidedness is puzzling. The UDGs, and their lopsided spatial distributions, may be associated with known substructures late in their infall into the clusters, meaning that we find evidence both for formation of UDGs in clusters and for UDGs falling into clusters. We also investigate the ultra-compact dwarfs (UCDs) residing in the clusters, and find the spatial distributions of UDGs and UCDs appear anti-correlated. Around 15% of UDGs exhibit either compact nuclei or nearby point sources. Taken together, these observations provide additional evidence for a picture in which at least some UDGs are destroyed in dense cluster environments and leave behind a residue of UCDs., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal. We present a description of the Dragonfly Wide Field Survey (DWFS), a deep photometric survey of a wide area of sky. The DWFS covers 330 $\mathrm{deg}^2$ in the equatorial GAMA fields and the Stripe 82 fields in the SDSS $g$ and $r$ bands. It is carried out with the 48-lens Dragonfly Telephoto Array, a telescope that is optimized for the detection of low surface brightness emission. The main goal of the survey is to study the dwarf galaxy population beyond the Local Group. In this paper, we describe the survey design and show early results. We reach $1\sigma$ depths of $\mu_g\approx 31$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ on arcminute scales and show that Milky Way satellites such as Sextans, Bootes, and Ursa Major should be detectable out to $D\gtrsim 10$ Mpc. We also provide an overview of the elements and operation of the 48-lens Dragonfly telescope and a detailed description of its data reduction pipeline. The pipeline is fully automated, with individual frames subjected to a rigorous series of quality tests. The sky subtraction is performed in two stages, ensuring that emission features with spatial scales up to $\sim 0.^{\circ}9 \times 0.^{\circ}6$ are preserved. The DWFS provides unparalleled sensitivity to low surface brightness features on arcminute scales., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. This is the first paper in the series. We report tentative evidence for a cold stellar stream in the ultra-diffuse galaxy NGC1052-DF2. If confirmed, this stream (which we refer to as "The Maybe Stream") would be the first cold stellar stream detected outside of the Local Group. Neutral gas is commonly believed to dominate over stars in the outskirts of galaxies, and investigations of the disk-halo interface are generally considered to be in the domain of radio astronomy. This may simply be a consequence of the fact that deep HI observations typically probe to a lower mass surface density than visible wavelength data. This paper presents low surface brightness optimized visible wavelength observations of the extreme outskirts of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2841. We report the discovery of an enormous low-surface brightness stellar disk in this object. When azimuthally averaged, the stellar disk can be traced out to a radius of $\sim$70 kpc (5 $R_{25}$ or 23 inner disk scale lengths). The structure in the stellar disk traces the morphology of HI emission and extended UV emission. Contrary to expectations, the stellar mass surface density does not fall below that of the gas mass surface density at any radius. In fact, at all radii greater than $\sim$20 kpc, the ratio of the stellar to gas mass surface density is a constant 3:1. Beyond $\sim$30 kpc, the low surface brightness stellar disk begins to warp, which may be an indication of a physical connection between the outskirts of the galaxy and infall from the circumgalactic medium. A combination of stellar migration, accretion and in-situ star formation might be responsible for building up the outer stellar disk, but whatever mechanisms formed the outer disk must also explain the constant ratio between stellar and gas mass in the outskirts of this galaxy., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the discovery of a large population of Ultra-diffuse Galaxies (UDGs) in the massive galaxy cluster Abell 2744 (z=0.308) as observed by the Hubble Frontier Fields program. Since this cluster is ~5 times more massive than Coma, our observations allow us to extend 0.7 dex beyond the high-mass end of the relationship between UDG abundance and cluster mass reported by van der Burg et al. 2016. Using the same selection criteria as van der Burg et al. 2016, A2744 hosts an estimated 2133 +/- 613 UDGs, ten times the number in Coma. As noted by Lee & Jang 2016, A2744 contains numerous unresolved compact objects, which those authors identified predominantly as globular clusters. However, these objects have luminosities that are more consistent with ultra-compact dwarf (UCD) galaxies. The abundances of both UCDs and UDGs scale with cluster mass as a power law with a similar exponent, although UDGs and UCDs have very different radial distributions within the cluster. The radial surface density distribution of UCDs rises sharply toward the cluster centre, while the surface density distribution of the UDG population is essentially flat. Together, these observations hint at a picture where some UCDs in A2744 may have once been associated with infalling UDGs. As UDGs fall in and dissolve, they leave behind a residue of unbound ultra-compact dwarfs.

We present the 2-degree Field Lensing Survey (2dFLenS), a new galaxy redshift survey performed at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. 2dFLenS is the first wide-area spectroscopic survey specifically targeting the area mapped by deep-imaging gravitational lensing fields, in this case the Kilo-Degree Survey. 2dFLenS obtained 70,079 redshifts in the range z < 0.9 over an area of 731 sq deg, and is designed to extend the datasets available for testing gravitational physics and promote the development of relevant algorithms for joint imaging and spectroscopic analysis. The redshift sample consists first of 40,531 Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs), which enable analyses of galaxy-galaxy lensing, redshift-space distortion, and the overlapping source redshift distribution by cross-correlation. An additional 28,269 redshifts form a magnitude-limited (r < 19.5) nearly-complete sub-sample, allowing direct source classification and photometric-redshift calibration. In this paper, we describe the motivation, target selection, spectroscopic observations, and clustering analysis of 2dFLenS. We use power spectrum multipole measurements to fit the redshift-space distortion parameter of the LRG sample in two redshift ranges 0.15 < z < 0.43 and 0.43 < z < 0.7 as beta = 0.49 +/- 0.15 and beta = 0.26 +/- 0.09, respectively.
