We present the results of our analysis of Gaia19dke, an extraordinary microlensing event in the Cygnus constellation that was first spotted by the {\gaia} satellite. This event featured a strong microlensing parallax effect, which resulted in multiple peaks in the light curve. We conducted extensive photometric, spectroscopic, and high-resolution imaging follow-up observations to determine the mass and the nature of the invisible lensing object. Using the Milky Way priors on density and velocity of lenses, we found that the dark lens is likely to be located at a distance of $D_L =(3.05^{+4.10}_{-2.42})$kpc, and has a mass of $M_L =(0.51^{+3.07}_{-0.40}) M_\odot$. Based on its low luminosity and mass, we propose that the lens in Gaia19dke event is an isolated white dwarf., Comment: 16 pages, submitted to A&A

Eclipsing binary stars allow derivation of accurate and precise masses and radii. When they reside in star clusters, properties of even higher precision, along with additional information, can be extracted. Asteroseismology of solar-like oscillations offers similar possibilities for single stars. We improve the previously established properties of the Hyades eclipsing binary HD27130 and re-assess the asteroseismic properties of the giant star $\epsilon$ Tau. The physical properties of these members of the Hyades are then used to constrain the helium content and age of the cluster. New multi-colour light curves were combined with multi-epoch radial velocities to yield masses and radii of HD27130. $T_{\rm eff}$ was derived from spectroscopy and photometry, and verified using the Gaia parallax. We estimate the cluster age from re-evaluated asteroseismic properties of $\epsilon$ Tau while using HD27130 to constrain the helium content. The masses and radii, and $T_{\rm eff}$ of HD 27130 were found to be $M=1.0245\pm0.0024 M_{\odot}$, $R=0.9226\pm0.015 R_{\odot}$, $T_{\rm eff}=5650\pm50$ K for the primary, and $M=0.7426\pm0.0016 M_{\odot}$, $R=0.7388\pm0.026 R_{\odot}$, $T_{\rm eff}=4300\pm100$ K for the secondary component. Our re-evaluation of $\epsilon$ Tau suggests that the previous literature estimates are trustworthy, and that the Hipparcos parallax is more reliable than the Gaia DR2 parallax. The helium content of HD27130 and thus of the Hyades is found to be $Y=0.27$ but with significant model dependence. Correlations with the adopted metallicity results in a robust helium enrichment law with $\frac{\Delta Y}{\Delta Z}$ close to 1.2. We estimate the age of the Hyades to be 0.9 $\pm$ 0.1 (stat) $\pm$ 0.1 (sys) Gyr in slight tension with recent age estimates based on the cluster white dwarfs. We present optical-infrared photometric and spectroscopic observations of Gaia18dvy, located in the Cygnus OB3 association at a distance of 1.88 kpc. The object was noted by the Gaia alerts system when its lightcurve exhibited a $\gtrsim$4 mag rise in 2018-2019. The brightening was also observable at mid-infared wavelengths. The infrared colors of Gaia18dvy became bluer as the outburst progressed. Its optical and near-infrared spectroscopic characteristics in the outburst phase are consistent with those of bona fide FU Orionis-type young eruptive stars. The progenitor of the outburst is probably a low-mass K-type star with an optical extinction of $\sim$3 mag. A radiative transfer modeling of the circumstellar structure, based on the quiescent spectral energy distribution, indicates a disk with a mass of $4{\times}10^{-3}\,M_{\odot}$. Our simple accretion disk modeling implies that the accretion rate had been exponentially increasing for more than 3 years until mid-2019, when it reached a peak value of $6.9 \times 10^{-6}\,M_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$. We aim to investigate variations in the arrival time of coherent stellar pulsations due to the light-travel time effect to test for the presence of sub-stellar companions. Those companions are the key to one possible formation scenario of apparently single sub-dwarf B stars. We made use of an extensive set of ground-based observations of the four large amplitude p-mode pulsators DW Lyn, V1636 Ori, QQ Vir, and V541 Hya. Observations of the TESS space telescope are available on two of the targets. The timing method compares the phase of sinusoidal fits to the full multi-epoch light curves with phases from the fit of a number of subsets of the original time series. Observations of the TESS mission do not sample the pulsations well enough to be useful due to the (currently) fixed two-minute cadence. From the ground-based observations, we infer evolutionary parameters from the arrival times. The residual signals show many statistically significant periodic signals, but no clear evidence for changes in arrival time induced by sub-stellar companions. The signals can be explained partly by mode beating effects. As extensive ground-based observations and characterisation of different variable stars are of the utmost importance in preparing optimal input catalogues for space missions, our aim was to search for new variable stars in selected fields of the northern sky. We obtained 24470 CCD images and analysed photometric time series of stars using the DAOPHOT based package Muniwin as the first step, and the Period04 package was used to further analyse the suspected new variable stars. The light curves and other observational results are presented for 3598 stars online. We found 81 new variable stars, among them is an eclipsing binary with a variable component and possibly eccentric orbits TYC4038-693-1 which we also observed spectroscopically, four {\delta} Scuti candidates, six other variable stars with periods falling into the interval of 35 minutes to 20 days. Furthermore, we identified 70 slowly varying stars with so far undefined periodicity. Additional photometric and spectral observations were carried out for TYC 2764-1997-1, and its previous candidacy for eclipsing binaries was approved., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures. UX Orionis stars (UXors) are Herbig Ae/Be or T Tauri stars exhibiting sporadic occultation of stellar light by circumstellar dust. GM\,Cephei is such a UXor in the young ($\sim4$~Myr) open cluster Trumpler\,37, showing prominent infrared excess, emission-line spectra, and flare activity. Our photometric monitoring (2008--2018) detects (1)~an $\sim$3.43~day period, likely arising from rotational modulation by surface starspots, (2)~sporadic brightening on time scales of days due to accretion, (3)~irregular minor flux drops due to circumstellar dust extinction, and (4)~major flux drops, each lasting for a couple of months with a recurrence time, though not exactly periodic, of about two years. The star experiences normal reddening by large grains, i.e., redder when dimmer, but exhibits an unusual "blueing" phenomenon in that the star turns blue near brightness minima. The maximum extinction during relatively short (lasting $\leq 50$~days) events, is proportional to the duration, a consequence of varying clump sizes. For longer events, the extinction is independent of duration, suggestive of a transverse string distribution of clumps. Polarization monitoring indicates an optical polarization varying $\sim3\%$--8$\%$, with the level anticorrelated with the slow brightness change. Temporal variation of the unpolarized and polarized light sets constraints on the size and orbital distance of the circumstellar clumps in the interplay with the young star and scattering envelope. These transiting clumps are edge-on manifestations of the ring- or spiral-like structures found recently in young stars with imaging in infrared of scattered light, or in submillimeter of thermalized dust emission., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

Gaia16aye was a binary microlensing event discovered in the direction towards the northern Galactic disc and was one of the first microlensing events detected and alerted to by the Gaia space mission. Its light curve exhibited five distinct brightening episodes, reaching up to I=12 mag, and it was covered in great detail with almost 25,000 data points gathered by a network of telescopes. We present the photometric and spectroscopic follow-up covering 500 days of the event evolution. We employed a full Keplerian binary orbit microlensing model combined with the motion of Earth and Gaia around the Sun to reproduce the complex light curve. The photometric data allowed us to solve the microlensing event entirely and to derive the complete and unique set of orbital parameters of the binary lensing system. We also report on the detection of the first-ever microlensing space-parallax between the Earth and Gaia located at L2. The properties of the binary system were derived from microlensing parameters, and we found that the system is composed of two main-sequence stars with masses 0.57$\pm$0.05 $M_\odot$ and 0.36$\pm$0.03 $M_\odot$ at 780 pc, with an orbital period of 2.88 years and an eccentricity of 0.30. We also predict the astrometric microlensing signal for this binary lens as it will be seen by Gaia as well as the radial velocity curve for the binary system. Events such as Gaia16aye indicate the potential for the microlensing method of probing the mass function of dark objects, including black holes, in directions other than that of the Galactic bulge. We report on the analysis of 34 years of photometric observations of the pulsating helium atmosphere white dwarf GD358. The complete data set includes archival data from 1982-2006, and 1195.2 hours of new observations from 2007- 2016. From this data set, we extract 15 frequencies representing g-mode pulsation modes, adding 4 modes to the 11 modes known previously. We present evidence that these 15 modes are ell = 1 modes, 13 of which belong to a consecutive sequence in radial overtone k. We perform a detailed asteroseismic analysis using models that include parameterized, complex carbon and oxygen core composition profiles to fit the periods. Recent spectroscopic analyses place GD358 near the red edge of the DBV instability strip, at 24,000 plus or minus 500 K and a log g of 7.8 plus or minus 0.08 dex. The surface gravity translates to a mass range of 0.455 to 0.540 solar masses. Our best fit model has a temperature of 23,650 K and a mass of 0.5706 solar masses. That is slightly more massive than suggested by most the recent spectroscopy. We find a pure helium layer mass of 10^-5.50, consistent with the result of previous studies and the outward diffusion of helium over time., Comment: 94 pages, 14 figures, 7 tables, Accepted for publication in the ApJ

During its four years of photometric observations, the Kepler space telescope detected thousands of exoplanets and exoplanet candidates. One of Kepler's greatest heritages has been the confirmation and characterization of hundreds of multi-planet systems via Transit Timing Variations (TTVs). However, there are many interesting candidate systems displaying TTVs on such long time scales that the existing Kepler observations are of insufficient length to confirm and characterize them by means of this technique. To continue with Kepler's unique work we have organized the "Kepler Object of Interest Network" (KOINet). The goals of KOINet are, among others, to complete the TTV curves of systems where Kepler did not cover the interaction timescales well. KOINet has been operational since March, 2014. Here we show some promising first results obtained from analyzing seven primary transits of KOI-0410.01, KOI-0525.01, KOI-0760.01, and KOI-0902.01 in addition to Kepler data, acquired during the first and second observing seasons of KOINet. While carefully choosing the targets we set demanding constraints about timing precision (at least 1 minute) and photometric precision (as good as 1 part per thousand) that were achieved by means of our observing strategies and data analysis techniques. For KOI-0410.01, new transit data revealed a turn-over of its TTVs. We carried out an in-depth study of the system, that is identified in the NASA's Data Validation Report as false positive. Among others, we investigated a gravitationally-bound hierarchical triple star system, and a planet-star system. While the simultaneous transit fitting of ground and space-based data allowed for a planet solution, we could not fully reject the three-star scenario. New data, already scheduled in the upcoming 2018 observing season, will set tighter constraints on the nature of the system., Comment: 22 figures

V391 Peg (alias HS2201+2610) is a subdwarf B (sdB) pulsating star that shows both p- and g-modes. By studying the arrival times of the p-mode maxima and minima through the O-C method, in a previous article the presence of a planet was inferred with an orbital period of 3.2 yr and a minimum mass of 3.2 M_Jup. Here we present an updated O-C analysis using a larger data set of 1066 hours of photometric time series (~2.5x larger in terms of the number of data points), which covers the period between 1999 and 2012 (compared with 1999-2006 of the previous analysis). Up to the end of 2008, the new O-C diagram of the main pulsation frequency (f1) is compatible with (and improves) the previous two-component solution representing the long-term variation of the pulsation period (parabolic component) and the giant planet (sine wave component). Since 2009, the O-C trend of f1 changes, and the time derivative of the pulsation period (p_dot) passes from positive to negative; the reason of this change of regime is not clear and could be related to nonlinear interactions between different pulsation modes. With the new data, the O-C diagram of the secondary pulsation frequency (f2) continues to show two components (parabola and sine wave), like in the previous analysis. Various solutions are proposed to fit the O-C diagrams of f1 and f2, but in all of them, the sinusoidal components of f1 and f2 differ or at least agree less well than before. The nice agreement found previously was a coincidence due to various small effects that are carefully analysed. Now, with a larger dataset, the presence of a planet is more uncertain and would require confirmation with an independent method. The new data allow us to improve the measurement of p_dot for f1 and f2: using only the data up to the end of 2008, we obtain p_dot_1=(1.34+-0.04)x10**-12 and p_dot_2=(1.62+-0.22)x10**-12 ..., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We report on analysis of 308.3 hrs of high speed photometry targeting the pulsating DA white dwarf EC14012-1446. The data were acquired with the Whole Earth Telescope (WET) during the 2008 international observing run XCOV26. The Fourier transform of the light curve contains 19 independent frequencies and numerous combination frequencies. The dominant peaks are 1633.907, 1887.404, and 2504.897 microHz. Our analysis of the combination amplitudes reveals that the parent frequencies are consistent with modes of spherical degree l=1. The combination amplitudes also provide m identifications for the largest amplitude parent frequencies. Our seismology analysis, which includes 2004--2007 archival data, confirms these identifications, provides constraints on additional frequencies, and finds an average period spacing of 41 s. Building on this foundation, we present nonlinear fits to high signal-to-noise light curves from the SOAR 4.1m, McDonald 2.1m, and KPNO 2m telescopes. The fits indicate a time-averaged convective response timescale of 99.4 +/- 17 s, a temperature exponent 85 +/- 6.2 and an inclination angle of 32.9 +/- 3.2 degrees. GM Cep in the young (~4 Myr) open cluster Trumpler 37 has been known to be an abrupt variable and to have a circumstellar disk with very active accretion. Our monitoring observations in 2009-2011 revealed the star to show sporadic flare events, each with brightening of < 0.5 mag lasting for days. These brightening events, associated with a color change toward the blue, should originate from an increased accretion activity. Moreover, the star also underwent a brightness drop of ~1 mag lasting for about a month, during which the star became bluer when fainter. Such brightness drops seem to have a recurrence time scale of a year, as evidenced in our data and the photometric behavior of GM Cep over a century. Between consecutive drops, the star brightened gradually by about 1 mag and became blue at peak luminosity. We propose that the drop is caused by obscuration of the central star by an orbiting dust concentration. The UX Orionis type of activity in GM Cep therefore exemplifies the disk inhomogeneity process in transition between grain coagulation and planetesimal formation in a young circumstellar disk., Comment: In submission to the Astrophysical Journal, 4 figures

KPD 1930+2752 is a short-period pulsating subdwarf B (sdB) star. It is also an ellipsoidal variable with a known binary period just over two hours. The companion is most likely a white dwarf and the total mass of the system is close to the Chandresakhar limit. In this paper we report the results of Whole Earth Telescope (WET) photometric observations during 2003 and a smaller multisite campaign from 2002. From 355 hours of WET data, we detect 68 pulsation frequencies and suggest an additional 13 frequencies within a crowded and complex temporal spectrum between 3065 and 6343 $\mu$Hz (periods between 326 and 157 s). We examine pulsation properties including phase and amplitude stability in an attempt to understand the nature of the pulsation mechanism. We examine a stochastic mechanism by comparing amplitude variations with simulated stochastic data. We also use the binary nature of KPD 1930+2752 for identifying pulsation modes via multiplet structure and a tidally-induced pulsation geometry. Our results indicate a complicated pulsation structure that includes short-period ($\approx 16$ h) amplitude variability, rotationally split modes, tidally-induced modes, and some pulsations which are geometrically limited on the sdB star., Comment: 30 pages, 17 figures, 11 tables. We report on the analysis of 436.1 hrs of nearly continuous high-speed photometry on the pulsating DB white dwarf GD358 acquired with the Whole Earth Telescope (WET) during the 2006 international observing run, designated XCOV25. The Fourier transform (FT) of the light curve contains power between 1000 to 4000 microHz, with the dominant peak at 1234 microHz. We find 27 independent frequencies distributed in 10 modes, as well as numerous combination frequencies. Our discussion focuses on a new asteroseismological analysis of GD358, incorporating the 2006 data set and drawing on 24 years of archival observations. Our results reveal that, while the general frequency locations of the identified modes are consistent throughout the years, the multiplet structure is complex and cannot be interpreted simply as l=1 modes in the limit of slow rotation. The high k multiplets exhibit significant variability in structure, amplitude and frequency. Any identification of the m components for the high k multiplets is highly suspect. The k=9 and 8 modes typically do show triplet structure more consistent with theoretical expectations. The frequencies and amplitudes exhibit some variability, but much less than the high k modes. Analysis of the k=9 and 8 multiplet splittings from 1990 to 2008 reveal a long-term change in multiplet splittings coinciding with the 1996 "sforzando" event, where GD358 dramatically altered its pulsation characteristics on a timescale of hours. We explore potential implications, including the possible connections between convection and/or magnetic fields and pulsations. PG 1159-035, a pre-white dwarf with T_eff=140,000 K, is the prototype of both two classes: the PG1159 spectroscopic class and the DOV pulsating class. Previous studies of PG 1159-035 photometric data obtained with the Whole Earth Telescope (WET) showed a rich frequency spectrum allowing the identification of 122 pulsation modes. In this work, we used all available WET photometric data from 1983, 1985, 1989, 1993 and 2002 to identify the pulsation periods and identified 76 additional pulsation modes, increasing to 198 the number of known pulsation modes in PG 1159-035, the largest number of modes detected in any star besides the Sun. From the period spacing we estimated a mass M = 0.59 +/- 0.02 solar masses for PG 1159-035, with the uncertainty dominated by the models, not the observation. Deviations in the regular period spacing suggest that some of the pulsation modes are trapped, even though the star is a pre-white dwarf and the gravitational settling is ongoing. The position of the transition zone that causes the mode trapping was calculated at r_c = 0.83 +/- 0.05 stellar radius. From the multiplet splitting, we calculated the rotational period P_rot = 1.3920 +/- 0.0008 days and an upper limit for the magnetic field, B < 2000 G. The total power of the pulsation modes at the stellar surface changed less than 30% for l=1 modes and less than 50% for l=2 modes. We find no evidence of linear combinations between the 198 pulsation mode frequencies. PG 1159-035 models have not significative convection zones, supporting the hypothesis that nonlinearity arises in the convection zones in cooler pulsating white dwarf stars., Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures, appendix with 6 long tables. Based on 24h high speed photometry of the hybrid PG 1159 star Abell 43, we have detected 6 sighificant pulsations with periods between 2380 s and 6075 s. A short (4h) run on the almost spectroscopic twin NGC 7094 central star resulted in detection of 3 low amplitude pulsations with periods between 2000 s and 5000 s. The results are close to predictions for g-mode pulsations driven by the kappa-mechanism induced by the partial ionization of carbon and oxygen., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Astronomy and Astrophysics

In this article we present the O-C diagram of the hot subdwarf B pulsating star HS2201+2610 after seven years of observations. A secular increase of the main pulsation period, Pdot=(1.3+-0.1)x10**(-12), is inferred from the data. Moreover, a further sinusoidal pattern suggests the presence of a low-mass companion (Msini=~3.5 Mjup), orbiting the hot star at a distance of about 1.7 AU with a period near 1140 days., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, ASP conf. series

We present the results of a photometric multisite campaign on the $\delta$ Scuti Pre-Main-Sequence star IP Per. Nine telescopes have been involved in the observations, with a total of about 190 hours of observations over 38 nights. Present data confirms the multiperiodic nature of this star and leads to the identification of at least nine pulsational frequencies. Comparison with the predictions of linear non-adiabatic radial pulsation models allowed us to identify only five of the nine observed frequencies, and to constrain the position of IP Per in the HR diagram. The latter is in good agreement with the empirical determination of the stellar parameters obtained by Miroshnichenko et al. (2001). An initial interpretation of the observed frequencies using the Aarhus non-radial pulsation code suggests that three frequencies could be associated with non-radial ($l$=2) modes. Finally, we present new evolutionary and pulsation models at lower metallicity (Z=0.008) to take into account the possibility that IP Per is metal deficient, as indicated by Miroshnichenko et al. We report 323 hours of nearly uninterrupted time series photometric observations of the DBV star GD 358 acquired with the Whole Earth Telescope (WET) during May 23rd to June 8th, 2000. We acquired more than 232 000 independent measurements. We also report on 48 hours of time-series photometric observations in Aug 1996. We detected the non-radial g-modes consistent with degree l=1 and radial order 8 to 20 and their linear combinations up to 6th order.We also detect, for the first time, a high amplitude l=2 mode, with a period of 796s. In the 2000 WET data, the largest amplitude modes are similar to those detected with the WET observations of 1990 and 1994, but the highest combination order previously detected was 4th order. At one point during the 1996 observations, most of the pulsation energy was transferred into the radial order k=8 mode, which displayed a sinusoidal pulse shape in spite of the large amplitude. The multiplet structure of the individual modes changes from year to year, and during the 2000 observations only the k=9 mode displays clear normal triplet structure. Even though the pulsation amplitudes change on timescales of days and years, the eigenfrequencies remain essentially the same, showing the stellar structure is not changing on any dynamical timescale., Comment: 34 pages, 14 figures, WET data, accepted to A&A
