Abstract

Let $(\pi,V)$ be a smooth representation of a compact Lie group $G$ on a quasi-complete locally convex complex topological vector space. We show that the Lie algebra cohomology space $\mathrm{H} ^\bullet(\mathfrak{u}, V)$ and the Lie algebra homology space $\mathrm{H}_\bullet(\mathfrak{u}, V)$ are both Hausdorff, where $\mathfrak{u}$ is the nilpotent radical of a parabolic subalgebra of the complexified Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ of $G$.

5. Locally algebraic representations and integral structures on the cohomology of arithmetic groups

Abstract

This paper introduces the notion of locally algebraic representations and corresponding sheaves in the context of the cohomology of arithmetic groups. These representations are particularly relevant for studying integral structures and special values of cohomological automorphic representations, as well as corresponding period relations. We introduce and investigate related concepts such as locally algebraic $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-modules and cohomological types of automorphic representations. Applying the recently developed theory of tdos and twisted $\mathcal D$-modules, we establish the existence of canonical global $1/N$-integral structures on spaces of automorphic cusp forms. As an application, we define canonical periods attached to regular algebraic automorphic representations, potentially related to the action of Venkatesh's derived Hecke algebra on cuspidal cohomology.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Aims/Hypothesis In diabetes haptoglobin (Hp) 2 vs Hp 1 allelic product is associated with cardiac and renal complications. Few studies report both Hp phenotype and Hp levels. In a Fenofibrate Intervention and Event Lowering in Diabetes (FIELD) trial substudy we evaluated the Hp phenotype, Hp levels, and fenofibrate effects. Materials and Methods In 480 adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) the Hp phenotype was assessed and the Hp level quantified (both using ELISAs assays) in plasma from baseline, after 6 weeks of fenofibrate, and (in n = 200) at 2 years post‐randomization to fenofibrate or placebo. Abstract

Quaoar is a classical Trans-Neptunian Object (TNO) with an area equivalent diameter of 1,100 km and an orbital semi-major axis of 43.3 astronomical units. Based on stellar occultations observed between 2018 and 2021, an inhomogeneous ring (Q1R, Quaoar's first ring) was detected around this body. Aims. A new stellar occultation by Quaoar was observed on August 9th, 2022 aiming to improve Quaoar's shape models and the physical parameters of Q1R while searching for additional material around the body. Methods. The occultation provided nine effective chords across Quaoar, pinning down its size, shape, and astrometric position. Large facilities, such as Gemini North and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), were used to obtain high acquisition rates and signal-to-noise ratios. The light curves were also used to characterize the Q1R ring (radial profiles and orbital elements). Results. Quaoar's elliptical fit to the occultation chords yields the limb with an apparent semi-major axis of $579.5\pm4.0$ km, apparent oblateness of $0.12\pm0.01$, and area-equivalent radius of $543\pm2$ km. Quaoar's limb orientation is consistent with Q1R and Weywot orbiting in Quaoar's equatorial plane. The orbital radius of Q1R is refined to a value of $4,057\pm6$ km. The radial opacity profile of the more opaque ring profile follows a Lorentzian shape that extends over 60 km, with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of $\sim5$ km and a peak normal optical depth of 0.4. Besides the secondary events related to the already reported rings, new secondary events detected during the August 2022 occultation in three different data sets are consistent with another ring around Quaoar with a radius of $2,520\pm20$ km, assuming the ring is circular and co-planar with Q1R. This new ring has a typical width of 10 km and a normal optical depth of $\sim$0.004. Abstract

Introduction This analysis aimed to investigate diabetes-specific psychological outcomes among adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D) using hybrid closed-loop (HCL) versus standard therapy.Research design and methods In this multicenter, open-label, randomized, controlled, parallel-group clinical trial, adults with T1D were allocated to 26 weeks of HCL (MiniMed™ 670G) or standard therapy (insulin pump or multiple daily injections without real-time continuous glucose monitoring). Psychological outcomes (awareness and fear of hypoglycemia; and diabetes-specific positive well-being, diabetes distress, diabetes treatment satisfaction, and diabetes-specific quality of life (QoL)) were measured at enrollment, mid-trial and end-trial. Linear mixed models were conducted, using restricted maximum likelihood estimation, unadjusted and adjusted (for covariates: age, sex, diabetes duration, glycated hemoglobin, recent severe hypoglycemia, pre-trial insulin delivery modality, enrollment and mid-study scores).Results 120 participants (mean age 44±12 years) were randomized to intervention (n=61) or standard therapy (n=59). At 13 weeks, the HCL group had better diabetes-specific positive well-being than the standard therapy group (unadjusted: Δ=1.0, p=0.025; adjusted: Δ=1.1, p=0.01), which was maintained at 26 weeks (unadjusted: Δ=0.9, p=0.042; adjusted: Δ=1.0, p=0.023). At 26 weeks, the HCL group also had less diabetes distress (adjusted: Δ=−6.4, p=0.039), fear of hypoglycemia (“maintain high”: adjusted: Δ=−0.8, p=0.034; and “worry”: adjusted: Δ=−1.8, p=0.048), and perceived “unacceptably high glucose levels” (unadjusted: Δ=−1.1, p

Abstract

This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. Abstract

ABSTRACT The gold standard for measuring insulin sensitivity (IS) is the hyperinsulinemic–euglycemic clamp, a time, costly, and labor‐intensive research tool. A low insulin sensitivity is associated with a complication‐risk in type 1 diabetes. Various formulae using clinical data have been developed and correlated with measured IS in type 1 diabetes. We consolidated multiple formulae into an online calculator (bit.ly/estimated‐GDR), enabling comparison of IS and its probability of IS 6.50 mg/kg/min (high), as measured in a validation set of clamps in 104 adults with type 1 diabetes. Insulin sensitivity calculations using different formulae varied significantly, with correlations (R2) ranging 0.005–0.87 with agreement in detecting low and high glucose disposal rates in the range 49–93% and 89–100%, respectively. We demonstrate that although the calculated IS varies between formulae, their interpretation remains consistent. Our free online calculator offers a user‐friendly tool for individual IS calculations and also offers efficient batch processing of data for research.

Abstract

Direct images of protoplanets embedded in disks around infant stars provide the key to understanding the formation of gas giant planets like Jupiter. Using the Subaru Telescope and Hubble Space Telescope, we find evidence for a jovian protoplanet around AB Aurigae orbiting at a wide projected separation (93 au), likely responsible for multiple planet-induced features in the disk. Its emission is reproducible as reprocessed radiation from an embedded protoplanet. We also identify two structures located at 430-580 au that are candidate sites of planet formation. These data reveal planet formation in the embedded phase and a protoplanet discovery at wide, > 50 au separations characteristic of most imaged exoplanets. 27. Internship of Accounting Students in the Form of E-Learning: Insights from Poland

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has imposed on us not only e-learning with higher education providers, but also triggered considerable difficulties in organization internships. Institutions and enterprises that used to be eager to take interns have refused to do so. In these conditions, the key objective for the Faculty of Management at the UTP University in Bydgoszcz was to organize e-internships to ensure a working environment similar to the real working conditions of the accounting department. A new internship program was developed that implemented the assumptions of active learning, by virtue of the case study approach, computer-based learning environments, and a comprehensive task simulating the work of the accounting department in the form of a multi-step project. The key objective of this article is to present the results of research in the form of a survey on how the students majoring in Finance and Accounting perceive the proposed internship method. The results show that an internship in the form of e-learning with the proposed education methods is appreciated by the students. E-learning does not necessarily have to be less effective than traditional learning. The use of platforms and the selecting of adequate methods can enhance the activity of students, supporting self-education and independent task performance.

Abstract

The growth of deep reinforcement learning (RL) has brought multiple exciting tools and methods to the field. This rapid expansion makes it important to understand the interplay between individual elements of the RL toolbox. We approach this task from an empirical perspective by conducting a study in the continuous control setting. We present multiple insights of fundamental nature, including: an average of multiple actors trained from the same data boosts performance; the existing methods are unstable across training runs, epochs of training, and evaluation runs; a commonly used additive action noise is not required for effective training; a strategy based on posterior sampling explores better than the approximated UCB combined with the weighted Bellman backup; the weighted Bellman backup alone cannot replace the clipped double Q-Learning; the critics' initialization plays the major role in ensemble-based actor-critic exploration. As a conclusion, we show how existing tools can be brought together in a novel way, giving rise to the Ensemble Deep Deterministic Policy Gradients (ED2) method, to yield state-of-the-art results on continuous control tasks from OpenAI Gym MuJoCo. From the practical side, ED2 is conceptually straightforward, easy to code, and does not require knowledge outside of the existing RL toolbox.

Abstract

We consider the category of Harish-Chandra modules for ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb R)$ as a module over the category of finite-dimensional representations of ${\rm SL}(2)$ with respect to the tensor product. In this note we use classical results about principal series to obtain a classification of $\otimes$-submodules of the category of Harish-Chandra modules of ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb R)$. The resulting classification recovers the classical classification of irreducible Harish-Chandra modules. Our methods are expected to generalize to arbitrary reductive pairs and more general base fields.

Abstract

Introduction: Cancer multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings are an important component of consultant workload, however previous literature has suggested trainees are not satisfied with their current curriculum in preparing for MDT working. Methods: This educational pilot assessed whether multi-speciality simulated scenarios with pre-defined learning objectives, could prepare specialist registrars for interacting within an MDT. Participants completed pre- and post-questionnaires assessing a number of areas including: current experience of training, confidence presenting patients and whether the course would alter future practice. Results: Trainee confidence increased significantly from a mean of 5 to 7 (mean to nearest whole number, p < 0.01). Trainees rated the session highly for utility and altering their future practice (mean scores of 9 for both respectively, out of 10). Conclusion: Simulation has shown success in other multidisciplinary teaching, however to our knowledge there are no cancer specific training programmes. Our results highlight a potential gap in UK specialist training, and suggest simulation may be beneficial in preparing trainees to present in MDT meetings.

47. An experimental study into the mechanisms of false brinelling contact damage

Abstract

False brinelling is a type of surface damage that occurs in rolling bearings when the contacts of bearing rings and rolling elements are subjected to small amplitude oscillatory motion. It manifests itself as deep craters with relatively polished surfaces that are evenly spaced around the rings. False brinelling can be considered as a specific example of a more general damage mode of fretting that occurs in many engineering components other than rolling bearings. False brinelling can be found in applications where nominally stationary bearings are subjected to external sources of vibration such as in vehicles transported by sea or rail, in spare machinery located adjacent to a working machine and in the pitch bearings of wind turbines. False brinelling is increasingly becoming of major practical importance because it is an important failure mode in hybrid vehicle components, where one power train is often stationary while the other is operating and hence acting as a vibration source. There is currently limited understanding of the influence of relevant contact conditions on false brinelling hindering our ability to predict and prevent the onset of this type of damage. This work investigates the influence of lubricant properties and contact conditions, including the amplitude and frequency of oscillations and applied load, on the onset and progression of false brinelling damage. Experiments were conducted with AISI 52100 steel specimens in a ball-on-flat configuration under small amplitude reciprocating conditions. Crucially, this set-up was adapted to allow optical access to the contact and direct observation of the damage onset and progression as well as development of fluorescence techniques. Additional experiments were conducted with the same lubricants on a full bearing rig which employs a thrust ball bearing subjected to small amplitude oscillatory motion and the observed trends compared to those from the ball-on-disc set up. It is shown that the false brinelling damage initiates locally at discrete micro-contacts and then spreads relatively quickly with continued rubbing to cover the whole contact area. Stroke lengths shorter than the Hertz contact width were shown to be most damaging but the damage amount diminished rapidly for stroke lengths longer than this. Lower oscillation frequencies and lower loads generally produced less damage. Oils with low viscosity significantly reduced the amount of damage and oils in general were more effective at reducing damage than greases using the same base oil. Surface roughness can trap lubricant to supply the contact. A consistent trend emerged across all tests that strongly indicates that contact conditions and lubricant properties that promote the ability of lubricant to effectively resupply the contact during its oscillatory motion are able to mitigate against false brinelling. Reducing adhesion by means of a coating or a reacted tribolayer can also reduce the damage. The insights presented in this thesis can help in devising mitigating measures against false brinelling, establishing new design guidelines and informing the development of models to predict its onset.

The deployment of Electrically Trace Heated Pipe-in-Pipe (ETH-PiP) brings the challenges of reliable protection selection and setting. This paper presents a study of relays and protection function optimization for ETH-PiP systems. The study is based on the developed simulation model of a typical ETH-PiP system. The paper presents simulation studies of physical phenomena occurring during electrical disturbances in the ETH-PiP system and offers detailed analyses applicable to system protection, including detection of disturbances, location, and elimination.

The present study contributes to the discourse on the environmental paradigm in architecture, recognizing beauty as essential alongside community and sustainability. It examines the modern proportion-based approach within the realm of formal aesthetics, which views proportional relationships as essential for architectural form and aims to develop methods to manipulate these relationships to achieve desired aesthetic outcomes. The main objective of this study is to characterize the modern approach as a current distinct from classical theories. The research seeks to explore the unique rationales behind a systematic approach to architectural proportions and to discern how these rationales distinguish the modern approach from its classical predecessor. The research encompasses theories from the mid-19th century to the present day. Through content and comparative analysis, this study explores theories by key figures such as A. Thiersch, H.P. Berlage, Le Corbusier, H. van der Laan, J. Żórawski, J. Hale, and P. Märkli. This study reveals the modern proportional approach as a unique current that adapts classical ideas to modern sensibilities, shifting from classical cosmological symbolism to a focus on logical consistency, visual perception, and artistic expression. It maintains a dual relationship with tradition, preserving past methods while introducing new interpretations of their aesthetic function. Despite its modest impact on contemporary practice, the proportional approach is significant, emphasizing the visual quality of the built environment and pursuing timeless design principles that transcend fleeting trends, focusing on enduring aesthetic values.
