The formation of the first galaxies at redshifts z ~ 10-15 signaled the transition from the simple initial state of the universe to one of ever increasing complexity. We here review recent progress in understanding their assembly process with numerical simulations, starting with cosmological initial conditions and modelling the detailed physics of star formation. In this context we emphasize the importance and influence of selecting appropriate initial conditions for the star formation process. We revisit the notion of a critical metallicity resulting in the transition from primordial to present-day initial mass functions and highlight its dependence on additional cooling mechanisms and the exact initial conditions. We also review recent work on the ability of dust cooling to provide the transition to present-day low-mass star formation. Primordial star formation appears to result in stars at least an order of magnitude more massive than modern star formation. It has been proposed that the transition from primordial to modern initial mass functions occurs due to the onset of effective metal line cooling at a metallicity Z/Z_sun = 10^{-3.5}. However, these simulations neglected molecular hydrogen cooling. We perform simulations using the same initial conditions, but including molecular cooling, using a complex network that follows molecular hydrogen formation and also directly follows carbon monoxide and water. We find that molecular hydrogen cooling allows roughly equivalent fragmentation to proceed even at zero metallicity for these initial conditions. The apparent transition just represents the point where metal line cooling becomes more important than molecular cooling. In all cases, the fragments are massive enough to be consistent with models of primordial stellar masses, suggesting that the transition to the modern initial mass function may be determined by other physics such as dust formation. We conclude that such additional cooling mechanisms, combined with the exact initial conditions produced by cosmological collapse are likely more important than metal line cooling in determining the initial mass function, and thus that there is unlikely to be a sharp transition in the initial mass function at Z/Z_sun = 10^{-3.5}., Comment: 41 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Understanding the origin of stellar masses is a key problem in astrophysics. In the solar neighborhood, the mass distribution of stars follows a seemingly universal pattern. In the centre of the Milky Way, however, there are indications for strong deviations and the same may be true for the nuclei of distant starburst galaxies. Here we present the first numerical hydrodynamical calculations of stars formed in a molecular region with chemical and thermodynamic properties similar to those of warm and dusty circum-nuclear starburst regions. The resulting IMF is top-heavy with a peak at ~ 15 Msun, a sharp turn-down below 7 Msun and a power-law decline at high masses. We find a natural explanation for our results in terms of the temperature dependence of the Jeans mass, with collapse occuring at a temperature of ~ 100 K and an H2 density of a few times 10^5 cm^-3, and discuss possible implications for galaxy formation and evolution., Comment: 5 pages including 3 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate the core mass distribution (CMD) resulting from numerical models of turbulent fragmentation of molecular clouds. In particular we study its dependence on the sonic root-mean-square Mach number $\Ms$. We analyze simulations with $\Ms$ ranging from 1 to 15 to show that, as $\Ms$ increases, the number of cores increases as well while their average mass decreases. This stems from the fact that high-Mach number flows produce many and strong shocks on intermediate to small spatial scales, leading to a highly-fragmented density structure. We also show that the CMD from purely turbulent fragmentation does not follow a single power-law, but it may be described by a function that changes continuously its shape, probably more similar to a log-normal function. The CMD in supersonic turbulent flows does not have a universal slope, and as consequence, cast some doubt on attempts to directly relate the CMD to a universal Initial Mass Function., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures. In primordial gas, molecular hydrogen forms primarily through associative detachment of H- and H, thereby destroying the H-. The H- anion can also be destroyed by a number of other reactions, most notably by mutual neutralization with protons. However, neither the associative detachment nor the mutual neutralization rate coefficients are well determined: both may be uncertain by as much as an order of magnitude. This introduces a corresponding uncertainty into the H2 formation rate, which may have cosmological implications. Here, we examine the effect that these uncertainties have on the formation of H2 and the cooling of protogalactic gas in a variety of situations. We show that the effect is particularly large for protogalaxies forming in previously ionized regions, affecting our predictions of whether or not a given protogalaxy can cool and condense within a Hubble time, and altering the strength of the ultraviolet background that is required to prevent collapse., Comment: 40 pages, 17 figures, AASTex. Identifying the processes that determine the initial mass function of stars (IMF) is a fundamental problem in star formation theory. One of the major uncertainties is the exact chemical state of the star forming gas and its influence on the dynamical evolution. Most simulations of star forming clusters use an isothermal equation of state (EOS). However, theoretical predictions and observations suggest that the effective polytropic exponent gamma in the EOS varies with density. We address these issues and study the effect of a piecewise polytropic EOS on the formation of stellar clusters in turbulent, self-gravitating molecular clouds using three-dimensional, smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations. To approximate the results of published predictions of the thermal behavior of collapsing clouds, we increase the polytropic exponent gamma from 0.7 to 1.1 at some chosen density n_c, which we vary. The change of thermodynamic state at n_c selects a characteristic mass scale for fragmentation M_ch, which we relate to the peak of the observed IMF. Our investigation generally supports the idea that the distribution of stellar masses depends mainly on the thermodynamic state of the star-forming gas. The thermodynamic state of interstellar gas is a result of the balance between heating and cooling processes, which in turn are determined by fundamental atomic and molecular physics and by chemical abundances.
