Background: Color vision deficiency (CVD) cause is the difficulty distinguishing colors, which can present vocational and avocational challenges. There is a lack of data on its overall prevalence of CVD. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aim to determine the prevalence of CVD in Africa. Methods: The protocol was registered with the Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) database (protocol registration number: CRD42024510403). A comprehensive systematic literature search was conducted via PubMed/MEDLINE/EMBASE, Google, and Google Scholar from February 2024 to May 28, 2024. The Johanna Bridges Institute quality appraisal tool was used to assess the quality of eligible articles. The pooled prevalence of CVD among Africans was estimated using a random effect model and expressed as prevalence and odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals using Der Simonian-Laird weight. The I2 statistic test was used to measure heterogeneity, and subgroup analysis was performed based on country, source of population, and gender. Result: A total of 502 initial studies were identified, and sixteen cross-sectional studies were included. The overall pooled prevalence of CVD in Africa was 2.71% (95% CI: 2.28,3.14, I2 = 72.6%, P<0.001). The prevalence among African males and females was 2.13% and 0.34%, respectively. The highest pooled prevalence was recorded in Ethiopia at 3.63% and the prevalence among primary and secondary school students was 2.96%. A funnel plot showed that all of the studies were symmetric, and the Egger test showed no publication bias. Conclusion: The pooled prevalence of color vision deficiency in Africa was found to be 2.71%. The highest prevalence was reported in studies conducted among school-age children in Ethiopia. Establishing effective screening programs and raising public awareness are recommended as future steps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Self‐management (SM) is the gold standard of care and is the direct active participation of patients in their disease management. Condition‐specific factors, physical and social environment, individual and family, and the process of SM are factors that influence SM in people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIV). Poor SM leads to high retroviral infection transmission, mortality, and morbidity. Objective: This study was aimed at assessing SM and its associated factors among PLHIV at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (UOGCSH), Northwest Ethiopia. Methods: A cross‐sectional study was conducted using a systematic random sampling technique at the UOGCSH from May 20 to July 30, 2022. The data were collected using a previously validated tool and were entered and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences Version 25. A binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with poor SM. The statistical significance was considered at a p value < 0.05. Result: Of 419 PLHIV, the median (IQR) SM score was 39 (9), and above half (52.6%, 95% CI: 48%–57%) of them had poor SM. Being unemployed (AOR = 2.49, 95%CI = 1.19, 5.19), living alone (AOR = 2.16, 95%CI = 1.12, 4.17), unfamiliar with the management of HIV‐related symptoms (AOR = 3.59, 95%CI = 2.08, 6.20), poor social support (AOR = 3.02, 95%CI = 1.54, 5.93), poor self‐efficacy (AOR = 3.04, 95%CI = 1.83, 5.06), and unsupported by the adherence support group (AOR = 17.17, 95%CI = 8.37, 35.22) were significantly associated with poor SM. Conclusion: The majority of PLHIV had poor SM. This study supports the findings of individual family SM theory and previously published studies regarding factors affecting SM. The government, hospital, adherence support groups, and PLHIV should work on modifiable sociodemographic, condition‐specific, and process of SM to improve SM of PLHIV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was aimed at determining the prevalence, patterns, and predictors of MRHA among patients visiting the emergency ward of the University of Gondar comprehensive specialized hospital, Ethiopia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from June 1, 2022, to August 30, 2022 G.C. in the emergency ward at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. The AT-HARM 10 tool was used to collect data from participants who fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Data was entered into EpiData Manager 4.6.0.0 and was exported to Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24 for analysis. Descriptive statistics were presented using frequency and percentage. Binary logistic regression was applied to identify factors associated with MRHAs with a 95% confidence level, and significance was declared at a p-value < 0.05. Results: The prevalence of MRHAs was 30.5% (95% CI = 27.7– 36.4%). More than half (64.52%) of MRHAs were definitely preventable. The majority of MRHAs (48.39%) were severe. Non-compliance (41.12%), followed by untreated indication (26.61%) and adverse drug reaction (12.09%) were the most frequent causes of MRHAs. Renal impairment (AOR = 2.703, 95% CI: 1.29 to 5.663), chronic disease (AOR = 10.95, 95% CI: 4.691 to 25.559), history of traditional medication use (AOR = 2.089, 95% CI: 1.162 to 3.755), and history of hospitalization (AOR = 4.001, 95% CI: 1.98 to 8.089) were significantly associated with MRHAs. Conclusion: MRHAs were substantially prevalent. Most of the MRHAs were definitely preventable. Renal impairment, chronic disease, history of traditional medication use, and history of hospitalization were predictors of MRHAs. Introduction: Low back pain (LBP) is a key social, economic, and public health problem in the world. The impact of LBP is given less priority and is empirically unrepresented in low- and middle-income countries as a result of the focus on more pressing and life-threatening health issues, including infectious diseases. In Africa, the prevalence of LBP is irregular and increasing among schoolteachers on account of teaching activities performed under suboptimal working conditions. Therefore, the objective of this review was to estimate the pooled prevalence and associated factors of LBP among school teachers in Africa. Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis was designed based on the PRISMA guidelines. A comprehensive systematic literature search focused on LBP in African school teachers was conducted using the PubMed/MEDLINE, CINAHL, and CABI databases, regardless of publication timelines, from October 20 to December 3, 2022. In addition, gray literature was searched using Google Scholar and Google Search. Data were extracted in Microsoft Excel by using the JBI data extraction checklist. The overall effect of LBP was estimated using a random effect model via DerSimonian-Laird weights. The pooled prevalence and odds ratio of associated factors with 95% CI were computed using STATA 14/SE software. The I2 test and Egger's regression test were used to assess heterogeneity and publication bias, respectively. Results: A total of 585 articles were retrieved, and 11 eligible studies involving a total of 5,805 school teachers were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The overall estimated pooled prevalence of LBP in African school teachers was found to be 59.0% (95% CI: 52.0%–65.0%). Being female [POR: 1.53; 95% CI (1.19, 1.98)], being older [POR: 1.58; 95% CI (1.04, 2.40)], being physically inactive [POR: 1.92; 95% CI (1.04, 3.52)], having sleep problems [POR: 2.03; 95% CI (1.19, 3.44)] and having a history of injury [POR: 1.92; 95% CI (1.67, 2.21)] were factors significantly associated with LBP. Conclusions: The pooled prevalence of LBP was high among school teachers in Africa compared to developed nations. Sex (female), older age, physical inactivity, sleep problems, and a history of previous injury were predictors of LBP. It is suggested that policymakers and administrators ought to gain awareness of LBP and its risk factors to put existing LBP preventive and control measures into action. Background: Low levels of living standards amongst street dwellers worldwide limit their access to conventional healthcare services, resulting in self-medication use for the treatment of an illness. Nevertheless, self-medication use has risks, including adverse drug reactions, increased polypharmacy, drug resistance, drug dependence, drug interactions and incorrect diagnosis. Ethiopia has a large street-dwelling community; however, there are no studies conducted in Ethiopia assessing self-medication use amongst street dwellers. This study provides insight into self-medication use and predictors amongst street dwellers in Ethiopia., Methods: A community-based, multicentre cross- sectional study was conducted amongst street dwellers from 1 September 2022 to 1 February 2023 at community drug-retail outlets in the three major cities in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. The data were obtained using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. Frequencies and percentages of descriptive statistics were calculated. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were employed to indicate predictors of self-medication use. To determine statistical significance, a 95% confidence interval with a p value below 0.05 was utilized., Results: The prevalence of self-medication use was 67.4%. Time and financial savings were reported as the reasons for most self-medication use. The most commonly reported illnesses for which people sought self-medication were gastrointestinal diseases. Low monthly income (adjusted OR 3.72, 95% CI 2.34-5.91) and residing near sewage areas (adjusted OR 3.37, 95% CI 2.03-5.58) were significantly associated with self-medication use., Conclusion: Street dwellers had a high rate of self- medication use. Residing near sewage areas and having a low level of income were factors in self-medication use. Gastrointestinal diseases, respiratory ailments and dermatological conditions were the most frequently reported complaints, whereas antimicrobials and anthelmintics were the most commonly used medications.
