Abstract

Application of the best available science to improve quantification of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at regional and national scales is key to climate action. Here, we present a two‐decade (2000–2019) GHG (CO2, CH4, and N2O) budget for Mexico derived from multiple products. Data from the National GHG Inventory, global observations, and the scientific literature were compared to identify knowledge gaps on GHG flux dynamics and discrepancies among estimates. Total mean annual GHG emissions were estimated at 695–910 TgCO2‐eq year−1 over these two decades, with 70% of the emissions attributable to CO2, 23% to CH4, and 5% to N2O (2% to other gases). When divided by sectors, we found agreement across emission estimates from various sources for fossil fuels, cattle, agriculture, and waste for all GHGs. However, considerable discrepancies were identified in the fluxes from terrestrial ecosystems. The disagreement was particularly large for the land CO2 sink, where net biome production estimations from the national inventory were double those from any other observational product. Extensive knowledge gaps exist, mainly related to aquatic systems (e.g., outgassing in rivers) and the lateral fluxes (e.g., wood trade). In addition, limited information is available on CH4 emissions from wetlands and soil CH4 consumption. We expect these results to guide future research to reduce estimation uncertainties and fill the information gaps across Mexico. Plain Language Summary: Mexico represents the 13th global emitter of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and the second among Latin American countries, releasing roughly 485 million tons of CO2, six million tons of CH4 (equivalent to 160 million tons of CO2), and 0.1 million tons of N2O (equivalent to 35 million tons of CO2). However, large uncertainties prevail in the estimation of several components of each flux; thus, the application of the best available science to account for and improve these estimations is essential for sound mitigation policies. Here, we used multiple available products (national inventories, satellites, flux towers, dynamic global vegetation models, inversion models, and other data sources) to advance our understanding of the GHG budget of Mexico over the last 20 years. We found that fluxes from fossil fuel combustion (including energy production, transportation, industry, etc.), agriculture, livestock, and waste management agree remarkably well across products. In contrast, we documented large differences among products for land‐based fluxes (e.g., CO2 capture) and scant available information on aquatic ecosystems (e.g., CH4 emission from wetlands) and on lateral fluxes (e.g., emissions from trade). We expect these results to help in guiding future measuring efforts and policies to mitigate GHG emissions from Mexico. 19. Divergent litterfall nutrient responses to rainfall seasonality revealed through long-term observations in a tropical dry forest.

Abstract

Long-term climate and vegetation data were used to determine the role of rainfall variability and its seasonal distribution on litterfall nutrients. Based on a 20-year data set on rainfall (range 334–1,506 mm per year) and litterfall nutrients from old-growth tropical dry forest (TDF) in Mexico, we examined litterfall N and P concentrations from the rainy and dry seasons in response to rainfall in the rainy (June–October) and the dry (November–May) seasons, the latter referred to as out-of-season precipitation (OSP). Rainy-season litterfall N concentrations, but not P concentrations nor N:P ratios, changed positively (p < 0.001) in response to rainy-season precipitation. Dry-season litterfall N concentrations and N:P ratios, but not litterfall P, increased (p ≤ 0.02) in response to rainfall from the preceding rainy season. N:P ratios of dry-season litterfall in years with OSP were higher only during dry years and N concentrations decreased in wet years (p < 0.05). The narrow range in dry-season litterfall P concentrations (1.00–1.15 mg g-1), irrespective of rainfall amount and OSP, suggests P conservation. The variation in litterfall N, but not litterfall P, in response to rainfall variability reveals a divergent nutrient response along steep changes in water availability in this TDF. Abstract

Ecosystem service (ES) models can only inform policy design adequately if they incorporate ecological processes. We used the Lund-Potsdam-Jena managed Land (LPJmL) model, to address following questions for Mexico, Bolivia and Brazilian Amazon: (i) How different are C stocks and C sequestration quantifications under standard (when soil and litter C and heterotrophic respiration are not considered) and comprehensive (including all C stock and heterotrophic respiration) approach? and (ii) How does the valuation of C stock and C sequestration differ in national payments for ES and global C funds or markets when comparing both approach? We found that up to 65% of C stocks have not been taken into account by neglecting to include C stored in soil and litter, resulting in gross underpayments (up to 500 times lower). Since emissions from heterotrophic respiration of organic material offset a large proportion of C gained through growth of living matter, we found that markets and decision-makers are inadvertently overestimating up to 100 times C sequestrated. New approaches for modelling C services relevant ecological process-based can help accounting for C in soil, litter and heterotrophic respiration and become important for the operationalization of agreements on climate change mitigation following the COP21 in 2015.

32. Resilience of Soil Properties to Land-Use Change in a Tropical Dry Forest Ecosystem

Abstract

Land-use change in tropical dry forests can dramatically alter soil properties, but little is known about their resilience. We assessed soil resilience by examining resistance to, as well as recovery from, pasture use by smallholder farmers in western Mexico. We measured 25 soil and vegetation properties and compared old-growth forest (OGF) sites and pastures to evaluate resistance to pasture use. We assessed whether those properties recovered to OGF reference values after pasture abandonment by analyzing the trajectories of properties along a chronosequence of secondary vegetation. Finally, we assessed whether recovery of soil properties could be inferred from the recovery of vegetation properties. Nine out of 25 properties differed significantly between the OGF sites and pastures. From these nine nonresistant properties, six (i.e., penetration resistance, soil C concentration, soil C/N, basal area, individual density, rarefied species richness of woody vegetation) showed recovery as a significant positive relationship with forest age. In contrast, surface litter C, litter C/N, and soil available P showed no resistance and no recovery within the successional period examined (up to 35 y). The best vegetation indicator for the recovery of some soil properties was woody species richness. This may suggest that functional differences of colonizing plants matter for recovery after pasture use. Our findings indicate that soil was overall resilient to pasture use, but some properties did not recover synchronously with vegetation properties during succession. Thus, more attention should be paid to soil function, because full ecosystem recovery is often inferred from the recovery of vegetation properties.

Abstract

The PREDICTS project-Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems (www.predicts.org.uk)-has collated from published studies a large, reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use. We have used this evidence base to develop global and regional statistical models of how local biodiversity responds to these measures. We describe and make freely available this 2016 release of the database, containing more than 3.2 million records sampled at over 26,000 locations and representing over 47,000 species. We outline how the database can help in answering a range of questions in ecology and conservation biology. To our knowledge, this is the largest and most geographically and taxonomically representative database of spatial comparisons of biodiversity that has been collated to date; it will be useful to researchers and international efforts wishing to model and understand the global status of biodiversity.

Abstract

The PREDICTS project—Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems (www.predicts.org.uk)—has collated from published studies a large, reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use. We have used this evidence base to develop global and regional statistical models of how local biodiversity responds to these measures. We describe and make freely available this 2016 release of the database, containing more than 3.2 million records sampled at over 26,000 locations and representing over 47,000 species. We outline how the database can help in answering a range of questions in ecology and conservation biology. To our knowledge, this is the largest and most geographically and taxonomically representative database of spatial comparisons of biodiversity that has been collated to date; it will be useful to researchers and international efforts wishing to model and understand the global status of biodiversity.

Abstract

This dataset contains site-level summaries of more than 1.6 million samples from 78 countries representing over 28,000 species, collated from existing spatial comparisons of local-scale biodiversity exposed to different intensities and types of anthropogenic pressures, from terrestrial sites around the world. Abstract

Understanding the consequences of biotic and abiotic variability on population dynamics is fundamental to assessing anthropogenic impacts, such as global climate disruption, on populations and species. Our understanding from studies to date is poor, although some long-term studies of small mammals in temperate ecosystems have elucidated the roles of climate and of interspecific interactions in their population dynamics. However, the lack of long-term studies in the tropics is a major impediment to understanding species and ecosystems in these regions. We analyzed the long-term population dynamics of seven species of small mammals from two adjacent tropical dry forests with contrasting phenology in a protected area of western Mexico. We modeled these dynamics using data from an 18-year live-trapping database, and we evaluated the effects of intra- and interspecific interactions, primary productivity, temperature, precipitation, and unusual climate events. Intraspecific interactions were the most common factors in every population, while interspecific interactions had only a mild positive interaction between few species. While we found that the effect of temperature was not relevant to population dynamics, precipitation caused positive effects on all species, either by directly enhancing the reproductive rate or, indirectly, by triggering changes in primary productivity. Extreme climate events created intense signals. Oryzomys melanotis , an invasive and opportunistic species, benefited from these events, and two populations were harmed by them: Peromyscus perfulvus and Liomys pictus , the small mammal with the most abundant population of the upland forest, which was extirpated for over 16 months. Our results suggest that sharp reductions in precipitation and more frequent extreme climate events—both predicted by global climate disruption regional models—would have dramatic effects, adding to the other anthropogenic pressures these forests are already suffering (habitat loss, excessive management). These results emphasize the importance of protected and unmanaged refugia, such as our study site, to provide sources for refaunation following local extinctions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Rainfall, runoff and sediment yield have been measured over three decades (1983–2015) in five contiguous small watersheds (12–28 ha) covered by mature tropical dry forest (TDF) at the Chamela Biological Field Station, UNAM, in the southern Pacific Coast of Jalisco, Mexico. Hydrological dynamics strongly drive the seasonal and inter-annual variability of TDF primary productivity, litter decomposition and nutrient cycling. Although the study region is constantly influenced by storms related to hurricane activity, they rarely make landfall. However, hurricanes have landed twice over a four-year period in the reserve: category 2 Hurricane Jova, in October 2011, and category 4 Hurricane Patricia, in October 2015. The long-term data has allowed to evaluate ecosystem’s response to these two major hydrometeorological events, in the context of the historic rainfall/runoff pattern. The results showed that antecedent precipitation and rainfall intensity were the major factors controlling rainfall-runoff and soil erosion processes. The analysis also showed the timing of the onset of the rainy season was very regular but the length of the rainy season was quite variable. The highly variable rainfall pattern and high probability of intense storms at the onset of the wet season were linked with the vulnerability of TDF to soil erosion. Also, two types of recurrent and intense drought periods have been identified: the high inter-annual droughts; and the frequent within-wet season droughts (“canículas”). There is a clear influence of the “El Niño”- Southern Oscillation phenomenon (ENSO) on the study area, with lower annual rainfall during its hot phase, and higher annual rainfall during its cold phase (“La Niña”). The relevance of these findings is discussed in terms of forest ecosystem management practices in the region and its implications concerning the current climate-change forecast for the study area. Abstract

Tropical dry forests (TDFs) on the Pacific Coast of Mexico experience seasonal droughts and very infrequent direct hurricane disturbance. Over a 4-year period, two hurricanes made landfall in the Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve, Hurricane Jova (category 2) in October 2011 and Hurricane Patricia (category 4) in October 2015. Our permanent long-term watershed-scale research program in the reserve provided a unique opportunity to analyze the ecosystem response to these hydrometeorological extreme events. Since 1982, we have been collecting monthly litterfall samples in 120 litter traps across five small contiguous watersheds. A direct instantaneous effect of both hurricanes was a massive deposition of green and senescent leaves, and fine woody debris to the forest floor. Hurricane-month litterfall flux largely exceeded the amount produced in any month of the pre-disturbance period (1982–2010), suggesting low resistance to hurricanes. Post-Jova recovery was fast, a response likely explained by a combination of the unusually high dry-season precipitation and higher than average total annual precipitation, coupled to a large flux of P-enriched litter and the re-sprouting response of many TDF species. Annual litterfall the year following Patricia decreased to half of that during the hurricane year, concomitant with a decrease in annual rainfall 20% below average. Ecosystem resilience seems strongly linked to post-disturbance water availability. Therefore, drought after a hurricane may limit the capacity of tropical dry forests to rapidly recover. Abstract

Extreme climatic events (ECEs), such as hurricanes, significantly affect biogeochemical processes and their intensity is predicted to increase. We documented the immediate and short-term consequences of the impact of Hurricane Jova on such processes in primary undisturbed tropical dry forest at the Estación de Biología Chamela. Data from our long-term study in five contiguous small watersheds were used to provide perspective to the hurricane effects. Carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations and fluxes were measured in runoff, litterfall and surface litter prior to and after the impact of the hurricane. Dissolved organic P (DOP) and C (DOC) concentrations in runoff in October 2011 (hurricane landfall), were 96% and 33% greater than the mean concentrations of previous months (July–September 2011). Nutrient fluxes were 10 (DOC), 3 (DON) and 15 (DOP) times greater than the mean fluxes of previous months. N and P concentrations in litterfall collected a few days after the hurricane were not different from pre-disturbance values, but P concentrations were much greater a few months after disturbance. Nutrient fluxes from vegetation to soil due to Jova represented 42% (N) and 30% (P) of the mean annual N and P litterfall fluxes in the period 2010–2012. Surface litter P concentrations, but not N, were very high at the end of the dry season following Jova. In addition, N and P stocks at this time were about 40% higher than the mean stocks in May of the other years of study. Both, litterfall and surface litter P returned to average values about a year after the hurricane. Litterfall P use efficiency, but not N, decreased after hurricane impact. Mean residence time of organic matter and N were similar and did not respond to hurricane disturbance, whereas P residence time was lower and decreased after the hurricane. Overall, our results indicate that hurricane Jova can be identified as an ECE. The return to pre-disturbance values within a year after the event suggests a high degree of short-term biogeochemical resilience in this forest. Variables related to N were resistant (no change) to the impact of Jova and to rainfall variability, but those related to P were highly responsive, quickly recovering to pre-disturbance and long-term dynamics. The P response to the hurricane and its relevance in the ecosystem are discussed in terms of long-term forest productivity and resilience under a scenario of increasing extreme hydrometeorological events. Abstract: Land‐use change in tropical dry forests can dramatically alter soil properties, but little is known about their resilience. We assessed soil resilience by examining resistance to, as well as recovery from, pasture use by smallholder farmers in western Mexico. We measured 25 soil and vegetation properties and compared old‐growth forest (OGF) sites and pastures to evaluate resistance to pasture use. We assessed whether those properties recovered to OGF reference values after pasture abandonment by analyzing the trajectories of properties along a chronosequence of secondary vegetation. Finally, we assessed whether recovery of soil properties could be inferred from the recovery of vegetation properties. Nine out of 25 properties differed significantly between the OGF sites and pastures. From these nine nonresistant properties, six (i.e., penetration resistance, soil C concentration, soil C/N, basal area, individual density, rarefied species richness of woody vegetation) showed recovery as a significant positive relationship with forest age. In contrast, surface litter C, litter C/N, and soil available P showed no resistance and no recovery within the successional period examined (up to 35 y). The best vegetation indicator for the recovery of some soil properties was woody species richness. This may suggest that functional differences of colonizing plants matter for recovery after pasture use. Our findings indicate that soil was overall resilient to pasture use, but some properties did not recover synchronously with vegetation properties during succession. Thus, more attention should be paid to soil function, because full ecosystem recovery is often inferred from the recovery of vegetation properties. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Abstract

One consequence of climate change is the alteration of global water fluxes, both in amount and seasonality. As a result, the seasonal difference between dry- (p < 100 mm/month) and wet-season (p > 100 mm/month) precipitation (p) has increased over land during recent decades (1980–2005). However, our analysis expanding to a 60-year period (1950–2009) showed the opposite trend. This is, dry-season precipitation increased steadily, while wet-season precipitation remained constant, leading to reduced seasonality at a global scale. The decrease in seasonality was not due to a change in dry-season length, but in precipitation rate; thus, the dry season is on average becoming wetter without changes in length. Regionally, wet- and dry-season precipitations are of opposite sign, causing a decrease in the seasonal variation of the precipitation over 62% of the terrestrial ecosystems. Furthermore, we found a high correlation (r = 0.62) between the change in dry-season precipitation and the trend in modelled net primary productivity (NPP), which is explained based on different ecological mechanisms. This trend is not found with wet-season precipitation (r = 0.04), These results build on the argument that seasonal water availability has changed over the course of the last six decades and that the dry-season precipitation is a key driver of vegetation productivity at the global scale. Abstract

Biodiversity continues to decline in the face of increasing anthropogenic pressures such as habitat destruction, exploitation, pollution and introduction of alien species. Existing global databases of species’ threat status or population time series are dominated by charismatic species. The collation of datasets with broad taxonomic and biogeographic extents, and that support computation of a range of biodiversity indicators, is necessary to enable better understanding of historical declines and to project – and avert – future declines. We describe and assess a new database of more than 1.6 million samples from 78 countries representing over 28,000 species, collated from existing spatial comparisons of local-scale biodiversity exposed to different intensities and types of anthropogenic pressures, from terrestrial sites around the world. The database contains measurements taken in 208 (of 814) ecoregions, 13 (of 14) biomes, 25 (of 35) biodiversity hotspots and 16 (of 17) megadiverse countries. The database contains more than 1% of the total number of all species described, and more than 1% of the described species within many taxonomic groups – including flowering plants, gymnosperms, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, beetles, lepidopterans and hymenopterans. The dataset, which is still being added to, is therefore already considerably larger and more representative than those used by previous quantitative models of biodiversity trends and responses. The database is being assembled as part of the PREDICTS project (Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems – www.predicts.org.uk). We make site-level summary data available alongside this article. The full database will be publicly available in 2015.

43. Effects of livestock management on the supply of ecosystem services in pastures in a tropical dry region of western Mexico.

Abstract

Human beings manage ecosystems to obtain ecosystem services. Through selected interventions they modify ecosystem condition to increase the provisioning services of interest to people. We analyzed the effect of livestock management regime components (duration, grazing period, number of burns and slashes and stocking density) on ecosystem services (provisioning, regulating and supporting) in seeded pastures in a tropical dry region. Our main questions were: (1) How is livestock management duration related to the magnitude of service supply?; (2) How are the different components of the livestock management regime and site conditions related to the magnitude of ecosystem service supply?; and (3) How do the components of management regime, the site conditions and the magnitude of ecosystem service supply interact? We quantified 15 service indicators within 24 plots (20 × 50 m) chosen along a 40-year gradient of livestock management duration. Livestock management regime was documented with semi-structured interviews to landowners. Simple linear regressions showed that increasing livestock management duration was related to increasing forage amount ( p = 0.03) and to decreasing forage quality ( p = 0.05), soil structure ( p = 0.002), and several biodiversity indicators ( p = 0.002-0.03). Stepwise multiple regression analyses showed that the increase in the total number of burns was related to decreases in foliar and soil nitrogen ( p < 0.05), carbon stock ( p < 0.001), as well as woody, herbaceous, and seedling richness or evenness ( p < 0.001). Increased frequency of slashes and of the grazing period also decreased soil fertility regulation and biodiversity. The canonical correspondence analysis showed a prominent role of the number of burns (which is correlated with duration, slashing frequency and grazing period) in promoting forage production, but in reducing most indicators of regulating and supporting services. Increased shallow soil moisture was related to increasing regulating and supporting services. Canopy covers inside the plot and in the surrounding forest were positively related to woody and seedling richness or evenness, but were independent of the effects of other management regime components. Our study suggests a conflict between the short-term management decisions such as burning to foster forage production and the long term sustainability of the management regime of these seeded pastures. Abstract

Abstract: We compared the structure and diversity of secondary tropical dry forests, growing in sites cleared by bulldozer 30 years ago and subjected to different land uses prior to abandonment: (a) housing development (HD), (b) pasture (P), and (c) no use (NU). We sampled two forest sites representing each of the three former land-use types (i.e., a total of six sites) and measured the diameter at breast height (dbh) of all stems with dbh ≥1cm and at least 2m in height. All individuals were identified to species and classified into each of four dbh sizes-classes: 1–3, 3–5, 5–10, and >10cm. No major differences in structure or diversity were evident among land-use types. Total tree densities varied from 2575±55 to 4745±985individuals/ha and total basal areas ranged from 12.5±2.6 to 14.6±0.3m2/ha (mean and S.E.). Neither one differed significantly (p <0.05) among land-use types. Overall, the most abundant tree size-class was the 1–3cm dbh (47% of the total number of trees), whereas trees greater than 10cm dbh were the least abundant (4%). We found significantly higher density and basal area (p =0.01) in NU than in HD and P only in the smallest trees (1–3cmdbh). We identified a total of 87 species in 28 families. The Leguminosae plant family had the greatest species richness and number of individuals in all land-use types. The HD land-use type showed lower total species richness than P and NU only with two of the four nonparametric estimators. Observed species richness decreased as dbh increased in all land-use types. At least 5 legumes were among the 10 most dominant species in all land-use types, of which the non-native Mimosa arenosa was the most dominant one. It represented between 42% and 52% of the total basal area in each land-use type. The secondary forests have reached, on average, 74% and 22% of the total density and basal area, respectively, of an average primary tropical dry forest of Mexico. The high number of individuals 1–3cmdbh (48% of the total and 83% of the species) suggest that regeneration is occurring in all land-use types, although to different degrees. The absence of small individuals of M. arenosa and a high abundance of primary forest species at NU, suggest that M. arenosa is being replaced at these sites. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

N cycling in tropical dry forests is driven by rainfall seasonality but the mechanisms involved are not well understood. We studied the seasonal variation in N dynamics and microbial biomass in the surface litter of a tropical dry forest ecosystem in Mexico over a 2-year period. Litter was collected at 4 different times of the year to determine changes in total, soluble, and microbial C and N concentrations. Additionally, litter from each sampling date was incubated under laboratory conditions to determine potential C mineralization rate, net N mineralization, net C and N microbial immobilization, and net nitrification. Litter C concentrations were highest in the early-dry season and lowest in the rainy season, while the seasonal changes in N concentrations varied between years. Litter P was higher in the rainy than in the early-dry season. Water-soluble organic C (WSOC) and water-soluble N concentrations were highest during the early- and late-dry seasons and represented up to 4.1 and 5.9% of the total C and N, respectively. NH and NO showed different seasonal and annual variations. They represented an average 23% of soluble N. Microbial C was generally higher in the dry than in the wet seasons, while microbial N was lowest in the late-dry and highest in the early-rainy seasons. Incubations showed that lowest potential C mineralization rates and C and N microbial immobilization occurred in rainy season litter, and were positively correlated to WSOC. Net nitrification was highest in rainy season litter. Our results showed that the seasonal pattern in N dynamics was influenced by rainfall seasonality and labile C availability, and not by microbial biomass. We propose a conceptual model to hypothesize how N dynamics in the litter layer of the Chamela tropical dry forest respond to the seasonal variation in rainfall. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Local power allometric models were developed to estimate secondary tropical dry forest biomass. • DBH was a highly significant (R2 ≥ 0.93) single predictor of biomass for the 27 studied tree species. • Accuracy (bias) and precision of allometric models were validated using numerical methods. • Using local or global wood density data did not affect the accuracy of our multispecies models. • Allometric models for species grouped by wood density were the most accurate among all models. Biomass estimates in tropical forests are mainly available for old-growth forests, but the expansion of tropical secondary forests urges the development of tools for more accurate estimations of biomass and carbon pools. In this study, we developed local allometric models to estimate aboveground biomass in secondary tropical dry forests of the Chamela region in western Mexico and compared their accuracy to that of non-local ("foreign") allometric models. We harvested 303 trees from 27 woody species contributing ≥75% of total basal area in secondary forest plots (5–45 y-old) distributed across the landscape. Nine to 14 individuals per species, covering the full natural range in stem diameter (DBH) found in an inventory, were measured for DBH and height (H) before harvesting. Subsamples from each stem and branches were used for dry mass and wood specific density (WSD) determinations. Power model functions were fitted to relate tree AGB to one or a multiplicative combination of three predictors (DBH, H, and WSD). Species-specific models with DBH alone explained a high percentage of the variance in tree AGB (R2 = 0.927 to 0.999). Among our multispecies models, fit and prediction of biomass improved when pooling the species into low and high WSD functional groups. Using local or global WSD data did not affect the accuracy of our multispecies models. In contrast, bias increased in foreign models with the use of global WSD values. 48. Precipitation extremes in recent decades impact cattle populations at the global and national scales.

Abstract

Cattle populations are one of the most important global ecological drivers. The global cattle population tripled during the past century, leading to large impacts on nutrient cycling, greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss. Nonetheless, their populations have not increased uniformly through the last seven decades (1961–2018), with large unexplained variation between years. We hypothesized a main driver for such fluctuation was climate variability and thus examined global and national level relationships between cattle population growth and precipitation anomalies for the period 1961–2017. We showed that the variation in the global cattle population growth rate was related to precipitation anomalies following a distinctive parabolic relationship, where extreme wetness or dryness decreased population growth. When the analysis was downscaled to the national level, we found the strength of such relationship to be determined by the background climate and management intensity. Countries in drier climates and with less intensive cattle management showed the largest susceptibility to extreme annual precipitation. We propose a general model to explain the relationship between precipitation extremes and cattle populations at multiple scales, based on ecological processes applicable to grazing systems. Abstract

The PREDICTS project-Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems (www.predicts.org.uk)-has collated from published studies a large, reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use. We have used this evidence base to develop global and regional statistical models of how local biodiversity responds to these measures. We describe and make freely available this 2016 release of the database, containing more than 3.2 million records sampled at over 26,000 locations and representing over 47,000 species. We outline how the database can help in answering a range of questions in ecology and conservation biology. To our knowledge, this is the largest and most geographically and taxonomically representative database of spatial comparisons of biodiversity that has been collated to date; it will be useful to researchers and international efforts wishing to model and understand the global status of biodiversity.

Abstract

Biodiversity continues to decline in the face of increasing anthropogenic pressures such as habitat destruction, exploitation, pollution and introduction of alien species. Existing global databases of species' threat status or population time series are dominated by charismatic species. The collation of datasets with broad taxonomic and biogeographic extents, and that support computation of a range of biodiversity indicators, is necessary to enable better understanding of historical declines and to project - and avert - future declines. We describe and assess a new database of more than 1.6 million samples from 78 countries representing over 28,000 species, collated from existing spatial comparisons of local-scale biodiversity exposed to different intensities and types of anthropogenic pressures, from terrestrial sites around the world. The database contains measurements taken in 208 (of 814) ecoregions, 13 (of 14) biomes, 25 (of 35) biodiversity hotspots and 16 (of 17) megadiverse countries. The database contains more than 1% of the total number of all species described, and more than 1% of the described species within many taxonomic groups - including flowering plants, gymnosperms, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, beetles, lepidopterans and hymenopterans. The dataset, which is still being added to, is therefore already considerably larger and more representative than those used by previous quantitative models of biodiversity trends and responses. The database is being assembled as part of the PREDICTS project (Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems - http://www.predicts.org.uk). We make site-level summary data available alongside this article. The full database will be publicly available in 2015.
