We introduce a toric version of the sheaf of logarithmic vector fields along a divisor of a simplicial toric variety. The notion is also relevant for algebraically independent families of polynomials in the Cox ring. We provide a generalisation of the Saito criterion for the freeness of the toric logarithmic sheaf. We establish generalizations of Saito's criterion for the freeness of divisors in projective spaces that apply both to sequences of several homogeneous polynomials and to divisors on other complete varieties. As an application, the new criterion is applied to several examples, including sequences whose polynomials depend on disjoint sets of variables, some sequences that are equivariant for the action of a linear group, blow-ups of divisors, and certain sequences of polynomials in positive characteristics., Comment: Minor edits and bibliography updates

In this paper, we provide a complete classification of the positive minimal monads whose cohomology is a stable rank 2 bundle on $\mathbb{P}^3$ with Chern classes $c_1=-1, c_2=10$ and we prove the existence of a new irreducible component of the moduli space $\mathcal{B}(-1,10)$ of a rank 2 stable bundles with the given Chern classes. We also show that Hartshorne's conditions on a sequence $\mathcal{X}$ of 10 integers are sufficient and necessary for the existence of a stable rank 2 bundle with odd determinant and spectrum $\mathcal{X}$. Furthermore, we prove that the sequence of integers $\{-2^{n-1},-1,0,1^{n-1}\}$ for $ n\geq4$ is realized as the spectrum of a stable rank 2 bundle $\EE$ of odd determinant by computing the minimal generators of its Rao module.

Saito gave a nice and efficient criterion to determine whether the module of logarithmic derivation associated with a reduced divisor in a complex variety is free or not. The aim of this note is to propose a new proof of this criterion, in the affine space, in the projective space, and for multiderivations, based on straightforward observations concerning free and reflexive modules. This point of view also allows us to prove a generalized version of the Saito criterion that applies to derivation modules associated with several polynomials.

We study rank-two reflexive sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^3$ with $c_2 =4$, expanding on previous results for $c_2\le3$. We show that every spectrum not previously ruled out is realized. Bourbaki sequences and Bourbaki ideals have been studied by several authors since its inception sixty years ago circa. Generic Bourbaki sequences have been thoroughly examined by the senior author with B. Ulrich and W. Vasconcelos, but due to their nature, no numerical invariant was immediately available. Recently, J. Herzog, S. Kumashiro, and D. Stamate introduced the {\em Bourbaki number} in the category of graded modules as the shifted degree of a Bourbaki ideal corresponding to submodules generated in degree at least the maximal degree of a minimal generator of the given module. The present work introduces the{\em Bourbaki degree} as the algebraic multiplicity of a Bourbaki ideal corresponding to choices of minimal generators of minimal degree. The main intent is a study of plane curve singularities via this new numerical invariant. Accordingly, quite naturally, the focus is on the case where the standing graded module is the first syzygy module of the gradient ideal of a reduced form $f\in k[x,y,z]$ -- i.e., the main component of the module of logarithmic derivations of the corresponding curve. The overall goal of this project is to allow for a facet of classification of projective plane curves based on the behavior of this new numerical invariant, with emphasis on results about its lower and upper bounds.

Instantons, emerged in particle physics, have been intensely studied since the 1970's and had an enormous impact in mathematics since then. In this paper, we focus on one particular way in which mathematical physics has guided the development of algebraic geometry in the past 40+ years. To be precise, we examine how the notion of mathematical instanton bundles in algebraic geometry has evolved from a class of vector bundles over the complex projective 3-space both to a class of torsion free sheaves on projective varieties of arbitrary dimension, and to a class of objects in the derived category of Fano threefolds. The original results contained in this survey focus precisely on the latter direction; in particular, we prove that the classical rank 2 instanton bundles over the projective 3-space are indeed instanton objects for any suitable chamber in the space of Bridgeland stability conditions., Comment: 40 pages, 1 figure, comments welcome

Generalizing the definitions originally presented by Kuznetsov and Faenzi, we study (possibly non locally free) instanton sheaves of arbitrary rank on Fano threefolds. We classify rank 1 instanton sheaves and describe all curves whose structure sheaves are rank 0 instanton sheaves. In addition, we show that every rank 2 instanton sheaf is an elementary transformation of a locally free instanton sheaf along a rank 0 instanton sheaf. To complete the paper, we describe the moduli space of rank 2 instanton sheaves of charge 2 on a quadric threefold $X$, and show that the full moduli space of rank 2 semistable sheaves on $X$ with Chern classes $(c_1,c_2,c_3)=(-1,2,0)$ is connected and contains, besides the instanton component, just one other irreducible component which is also fully described.

Let $X$ be a smooth projective threefold of Picard number one for which the generalized Bogomlov-Gieseker inequality holds. We characterize the limit Bridgeland semistable objects at large volume in the vertical region of the geometric stability conditions associated to $X$ in complete generality and provide examples of asymptotically semistable objects. In the case of the projective space and $ch^\beta(E)=(-R,0,D,0)$, we prove that there are only a finite number of nested walls in the $(\alpha,s)$-plane. Moreover, when $R=0$ the only semistable objects in the outermost chamber are the 1-dimensional Gieseker semistable sheaves, and when $\beta=0$ there are no semistable objects in the innermost chamber. In both cases, the only limit semistable objects of the form $E$ or $E[1]$ (where $E$ is a sheaf) that do not get destabilized until the innermost wall are precisely the (shifts of) instanton sheaves., Comment: 44 pages, comments welcome!

We propose a three-step program for the classification of stable rank 2 bundles on the projective space $\mathbb{P}^3$ inspired by an article by Hartshorne and Rao. While this classification program has been successfully completed for stable rank 2 bundles with even determinant and $c_2\le5$, much less is known for bundles with odd determinant. After revising the known facts about these objects, we list all possible spectra and minimal monads for stable rank 2 bundles with odd determinant and $c_2\le8$. We provide a full classification of all bundles with positive minimal monads, provide a negative answer to a question raised by Hartshorne and Rao, and describe new irreducible components of the moduli spaces of stable rank 2 bundles with odd determinant and $c_2=6,8$., Comment: 25 pages; relevant revision in Section 2, but main results have been mantained

A torsion-free sheaf $E$ on a projective variety $X$ is called quasi-trivial if $E^{\vee\vee}=\mathcal{O}_{X}^{\oplus r}$. While such sheaves are always $\mu$-semistable, they may not be semistable. We study the Gieseker--Maruyama moduli space $\mathcal{N}_X(r,n)$ of rank $r$ semistable quasi-trivial sheaves on $X$ with $E^{\vee\vee}/E$ being a 0-dimensional sheaf of length $n$ via the Quot scheme of points $Quot(\mathcal{O}_{X}^{\oplus r},n)$. We show that, when $(X,A)$ is a good projective variety, then $\mathcal{N}_X(r,n)$ is empty when $r>n$, while $\mathcal{N}_X(n,n)$ has no stable points and is isomorphic to the symmetric product $Sym^n(X)$. We define logarithmic tangent sheaves associated with complete intersections in connection with Jacobian syzygies and distributions. We analyse the notions of local freeness, freeness and stability of these sheaves. We carry out a complete study of logarithmic sheaves associated with pencils of quadrics and compute their projective dimension from the classical invariants such as the Segre symbol and new invariants (splitting type and degree vector) designed for the classification of irregular pencils. This leads to a complete classification of free (equivalently, locally free) pencils of quadrics. Finally we produce examples of locally free, non free pencils of surfaces in P3 of any degree k at least 3, answering (in the negative) a question of Calvo-Andrade, Cerveau, Giraldo and Lins Neto about codimension foliations on P3 .

In a previous paper, the first two named authors established an isomorphism between the moduli space of framed flags of sheaves on the projective plane and the moduli space of stable representations of a certain quiver. In the present note, we substitute one of the claims made, namely [5, Theorem 17], for a weaker claim regarding the existence of unobstructed points in the quiver moduli space. We also extend some of the results of the cited paper, concerning the maximal stability chamber within which the isomorphism mentioned holds, and the existence of a perfect obstruction theory for the quiver moduli space., Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure

We study the conormal sheaves and singular schemes of 1-dimensional foliations on smooth projective varieties $X$ of dimension 3 and Picard rank 1. We prove that if the singular scheme has dimension 0, then the conormal sheaf is $\mu$-stable whenever the tangent bundle $TX$ is stable, and apply this fact to the characterization of certain irreducible components of the moduli space of rank 2 reflexive sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^3$ and on a smooth quadric hypersurface $Q_3\subset\mathbb{P}^4$. Finally, we give a classification of local complete intersection foliations, that is, foliations with locally free conormal sheaves, of degree 0 and 1 on $Q_3$., Comment: 23 pages. Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety. We show that the map that sends a codimension one distribution on $X$ to its singular scheme is a morphism from the moduli space of distributions into a Hilbert scheme. We describe its fibers and, when $X = \mathbb{P}^n$, compute them via syzygies. As an application, we describe the moduli spaces of degree 1 distributions on $\mathbb{P}^3$. We study foliations by curves on the three-dimensional projective space with no isolated singularities, which is equivalent to assuming that the conormal sheaf is locally free. We provide a classification of the topological and algebraic invariants of the conormal sheaves and singular schemes for such foliations by curves, up to degree 3. In particular, we prove that foliations by curves of degree 1 or 2 are contained in a pencil of planes or are Legendrian, and are given by the complete intersection of two codimension one distributions. Furthermore, we prove that the conormal sheaf of a foliation by curves of degree 3 with reduced singular scheme either splits as a sum of line bundles or is an instanton bundle. For degree larger than 3, we focus on two classes of foliations by curves, namely Legendrian foliations and those whose conormal sheaf is a twisted null-correlation bundle. We consider Bridgeland stability conditions for three-folds conjectured by Bayer-Macr\`i-Toda in the case of Picard rank one. We study the differential geometry of numerical walls, characterizing when they are bounded, discussing possible intersections, and showing that they are essentially regular. Next, we prove that walls within a certain region of the upper half plane that parametrizes geometric stability conditions must always intersect the curve given by the vanishing of the slope function and, for a fixed value of s, have a maximum turning point there. We then use all of these facts to prove that Gieseker semistability is equivalent to asymptotic semistability along a class of paths in the upper half plane, and to show how to find large families of walls. We illustrate how to compute all of the walls and describe the Bridgeland moduli spaces for the Chern character (2,0,-1,0) on complex projective 3-space in a suitable region of the upper half plane., Comment: 61 pages with 11 figures. We study the moduli space of rank 2 instanton sheaves on $\p3$ in terms of representations of a quiver consisting of 3 vertices and 4 arrows between two pairs of vertices. Aiming at an alternative compactification for the moduli space of instanton sheaves, we show that for each rank 2 instanton sheaf, there is a stability parameter $\theta$ for which the corresponding quiver representation is $\theta$-stable (in the sense of King), and that the space of stability parameters has a non trivial wall-and-chamber decomposition. Looking more closely at instantons of low charge, we prove that there are stability parameters with respect to which every representation corresponding to a rank 2 instanton sheaf of charge 2 is stable, and provide a complete description of the wall-and-chamber decomposition for representation corresponding to a rank 2 instanton sheaf of charge 1., Comment: 17 pages, 1 figure

We describe new irreducible components of the moduli space of rank $2$ semistable torsion free sheaves on the three-dimensional projective space whose generic point corresponds to non-locally free sheaves whose singular locus is either 0-dimensional or consists of a line plus disjoint points. In particular, we prove that the moduli spaces of semistable sheaves with Chern classes $(c_1,c_2,c_3)=(-1,2n,0)$ and $(c_1,c_2,c_3)=(0,n,0)$ always contain at least one rational irreducible component. As an application, we prove that the number of such components grows as the second Chern class grows, and compute the exact number of irreducible components of the moduli spaces of rank 2 semistable torsion free sheaves with Chern classes $(c_1,c_2,c_3)=(-1,2,m)$ for all possible values for $m$; all components turn out to be rational. Furthermore, we also prove that these moduli spaces are connected, showing that some of sheaves here considered are smoothable., Comment: 42 pages, 1 figure

We show that codimension one distributions with at most isolated singularities on certain smooth projective threefolds with Picard rank one have stable tangent sheaves. The ideas in the proof of this fact are then applied to the characterization of certain irreducible components of the moduli space of stable rank 2 reflexive sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^3$, and to the construction of stable rank 2 reflexive sheaves with prescribed Chern classes on general threefolds. We also prove that if $\mathscr{G}$ is a subfoliation of a codimension one distribution $\mathscr{F}$ with isolated singularities, then $Sing(\mathscr{G})$ is a curve. As a consequence, we give a criterion to decide whether $\mathscr{G}$ is globally given as the intersection of $\mathscr{F}$ with another codimension one distribution. The Dirac--Higgs bundle is a hyperholomorphic bundle over the moduli space of stable Higgs bundles of coprime rank and degree. We provide an algebraic generalization to the case of trivial degree and the rank higher than $1$. This allow us to generalize to this case the Nahm transform defined by Frejlich and the second named author, which, out of a stable Higgs bundle, produces a vector bundle with connection over the moduli space of rank 1 Higgs bundles. By performing the higher rank Nahm transform we obtain a hyperholomorphic bundle with connection over the moduli space of stable Higgs bundles of rank $n$ and degree 0, twisted by the gerbe of liftings of the projective universal bundle. Such hyperholomorphic vector bundles over the moduli space of stable Higgs bundles can be seen, in the physicist's language, as BBB-branes twisted by the above mentioned gerbe. We refer to these objects as Nahm branes. Finally, we study the behaviour of Nahm branes under Fourier--Mukai transform over the smooth locus of the Hitchin fibration, checking that the resulting objects are supported on a Lagrangian multisection of the Hitchin fibration, so they describe partial data of BAA-branes., Comment: 29 pages. We present a new family of monads whose cohomology is a stable rank two vector bundle on $\mathbb{P}^3$. We also study the irreducibility and smoothness together with a geometrical description of some of these families. These facts are used to construct a new infinite series of rational moduli components of stable rank two vector bundles with trivial determinant and growing second Chern class. We also prove that the moduli space of stable rank two vector bundles with trivial determinant and second Chern class equal to 5 has exactly three irreducible rational components., Comment: 33 pages. We study the irreducible components of the moduli space of instanton sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^3$, that is rank 2 torsion free sheaves $E$ with $c_1(E)=c_3(E)=0$ satisfying $h^1(E(-2))=h^2(E(-2))=0$. In particular, we classify all instanton sheaves with $c_2(E)\le4$, describing all the irreducible components of their moduli space. A key ingredient for our argument is the study of the moduli space ${\mathcal T}(d)$ of stable sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^3$ with Hilbert polynomial $P(t)=d\cdot t$, which contains, as an open subset, the moduli space of rank 0 instanton sheaves of multiplicity $d$; we describe all the irreducible components of ${\mathcal T}(d)$ for $d\le4$., Comment: 22 pages

We study codimension one holomorphic distributions on the projective three-space, analyzing the properties of their singular schemes and tangent sheaves. In particular, we provide a classification of codimension one distributions of degree at most 2 with locally free tangent sheaves, and show that codimension one distributions of arbitrary degree with only isolated singularities have stable tangent sheaves. Furthermore, we describe the moduli space of distributions in terms of Grothendieck's Quot-scheme for the tangent bundle. In certain cases, we show that the moduli space of codimension one distributions on the projective space is an irreducible, nonsingular quasi-projective variety. In the context of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds, we say that (anti)holomorphic (anti)symplectic involutions are brane involutions since their fixed point locus is a brane in the physicists' language, i.e. a submanifold which is either complex or lagrangian submanifold with respect to each of the three K\"ahler structures of the associated hyperk\"ahler structure. Starting from a brane involution on a K3 or abelian surface, one can construct a natural brane involution on its moduli space of sheaves. We study these natural involutions and their relation with the Fourier--Mukai transform. Later, we recall the lattice-theoretical approach to Mirror Symmetry. We provide two ways of obtaining a brane involution on the mirror and we study the behaviour of the brane involutions under both mirror transformations, giving examples in the case of a K3 surface and $K3^{[2]}$-type manifolds., Comment: to appear in Kyoto J. We describe new components of the Gieseker--Maruyama moduli scheme $\mathcal{M}(n)$ of semistable rank 2 sheaves $E$ on $\mathbb{P}^3$ with $c_1(E)=0$, $c_2(E)=n$ and $c_3(E)=0$ whose generic point corresponds to non locally free sheaves. We show that such components grow in number as $n$ grows, and discuss how they intersect the instanton component. In the physicist's language, a brane in a hyperkahler manifold is a submanifold which is either complex or lagrangian with respect to three Kahler structures of the ambient manifold. By considering the fixed loci of certain involutions, we describe branes in Nakajima quiver varieties of all possible types. We then focus on the moduli space of framed torsion free sheaves on the projective plane, showing how the involutions considered act on sheaves, and proving the existence of branes in some cases.

Let ${\mathcal I}(n)$ denote the moduli space of rank $2$ instanton bundles of charge $n$ on ${\mathbb P}^3$. We know from several authors that ${\mathcal I}(n)$ is an irreducible, nonsingular and affine variety of dimension $8n-3$. Since every rank $2$ instanton bundle on ${\mathbb P}^3$ is stable, we may regard ${\mathcal I}(n)$ as an open subset of the projective Gieseker--Maruyama moduli scheme ${\mathcal M}(n)$ of rank $2$ semistable torsion free sheaves $F$ on ${\mathbb P}^3$ with Chern classes $c_1=c_3=0$ and $c_2=n$, and consider the closure $\overline{{\mathcal I}(n)}$ of ${\mathcal I}(n)$ in ${\mathcal M}(n)$. We construct some of the irreducible components of dimension $8n-4$ of the boundary $\partial{\mathcal I}(n):=\overline{{\mathcal I}(n)}\setminus{\mathcal I}(n)$. These components generically lie in the smooth locus of ${\mathcal M}(n)$ and consist of rank $2$ torsion free instanton sheaves with singularities along rational curves., Comment: 30 pages

We prove that the singular locus of a rank 2 instanton sheaf $E$ on $\mathbb{P}^3$ which is not locally free has pure dimension 1. Moreover, we also show that the dual and double dual of $E$ are isomorphic locally free instanton sheaves, and that the sheaves $\mathcal{E}xt^1(E,\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^3)$ and $E^{\vee\vee}/E$ are rank $0$ instantons. We give a linear algebraic and a monadic descriptions of the Hilbert scheme of points on the affine space of dimension $n$ which naturally extends Nakajima's representation of the Hilbert scheme of points on the plane. We prove that the tangent sheaf of a codimension one locally free distribution splits as a sum of line bundles if and only if its singular scheme is arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay. In addition, we show that a foliation by curves is given by an intersection of generically transversal holomorphic distributions of codimension one if and only if its singular scheme is arithmetically Buchsbaum. Finally, we establish that these foliations are determined by their singular schemes, and deduce that the Hilbert scheme of certain arithmetically Buchsbaum schemes of codimension $2$ is birational to a Grassmannian., Comment: 21 pages

We prove three results on pure resolutions of vector bundles on projective spaces. First, we show that there are simple vector bundles of rank n on Pn with arbitrary homological dimension. We then analyze the pure resolutions given by the sheafification of the Koszul complex of a certain algebra and by the sheafification of the minimal free resolution of a compressed Gorenstein Artinian graded algebra, proving that their syzygies are simple vector bundles. Let C be small category and A an arbitrary category. Consider the category C(A) whose objects are functors from C to A, and whose morphisms are natural transformations. Given a functor F : A --> B one obtains an induced functor F_C : C(A) --> C(B) . If A and B are abelian categories, we have that C(A) and C(B) are also abelian, and one has two functors R(F_C) : D(C(A)) --> D(C(B)) and (RF)_ C : C(D(A)) --> C(D (B)). We present a construction of framed torsion free instanton sheaves on a projective variety containing a fixed line which further generalizes the one on projective spaces. This is done by generalizing the so called ADHM variety. We show that the moduli space of such objects is a quasi projective variety, which is fine in the case of projective spaces.
