We present the serendipitous discovery of a new radio-continuum ring-like object nicknamed Kyklos (J1802-3353), with MeerKAT UHF and L-band observations. The radio ring, which resembles the recently discovered odd radio circles (ORCs), has a diameter of 80 arcsec and is located just 6 deg from the Galactic plane. However, Kyklos exhibits an atypical thermal radio-continuum spectrum ({\alpha} = -0.1 +/- 0.3), which led us to explore different possible formation scenarios. We concluded that a circumstellar shell around an evolved massive star, possibly a Wolf-Rayet, is the most convincing explanation with the present data., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted in A&A

The Tully-Fisher Relation (TFR) is a well-known empirical relationship between the luminosity of a spiral galaxy and its circular velocity, allowing us to estimate redshift independent distances. Here we use high signal-to-noise HI 21-cm integrated spectra from the second pilot data release (PDR2, 180 deg2) of the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind surveY (WALLABY). In order to prepare for the full WALLABY survey, we have investigated the TFR in phase 2 of the pilot survey with a further three fields. The data were obtained with wide-field Phased Array Feeds on the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and have an angular resolution of 30 arcsec and a velocity resolution of ~4 km/s. Galaxy luminosities have been measured from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), and optical galaxy inclinations from the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey. We present TFRs for wavelengths from 0.8-3.4{\mu}m. We examine sources of galaxy inclination data and investigate magnitudes from the DECam Local Volume Exploration Survey (DELVE) and DENIS catalogues and the 4HS target catalogue based on the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS). We consider the baryonic TFR. These are all of interest for TFR using the full WALLABY survey of 200,000 galaxies. Supermassive Black Holes (SMBHs) are commonly found at the centers of massive galaxies. Estimating their masses ($M_\text{BH}$) is crucial for understanding galaxy-SMBH co-evolution. We present WISE2MBH, an efficient algorithm that uses cataloged Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) magnitudes to estimate total stellar mass ($M_*$) and scale this to bulge mass ($M_\text{Bulge}$), and $M_\text{BH}$, estimating the morphological type ($T_\text{Type}$) and bulge fraction ($B/T$) in the process. WISE2MBH uses scaling relations from the literature or developed in this work, providing a streamlined approach to derive these parameters. It also distinguishes QSOs from galaxies and estimates the galaxy $T_\text{Type}$ using WISE colors with a relation trained with galaxies from the 2MASS Redshift Survey. WISE2MBH performs well up to $z\sim0.5$ thanks to K-corrections in magnitudes and colors. WISE2MBH $M_\text{BH}$ estimates agree very well with those of a selected sample of local galaxies with $M_\text{BH}$ measurements or reliable estimates: a Spearman score of $\sim$0.8 and a RMSE of $\sim$0.63 were obtained. When applied to the ETHER sample at $z\leq0.5$, WISE2MBH provides $\sim$1.9 million $M_\text{BH}$ estimates (78.5\% new) and $\sim$100 thousand upper limits. The derived local black hole mass function (BHMF) is in good agreement with existing literature BHMFs. Galaxy demographic projects, including target selection for the Event Horizon Telescope, can benefit from WISE2MBH for up-to-date galaxy parameters and $M_\text{BH}$ estimates. The MHONGOOSE (MeerKAT HI Observations of Nearby Galactic Objects: Observing Southern Emitters) survey maps the distribution and kinematics of the neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) gas in and around 30 nearby star-forming spiral and dwarf galaxies to extremely low HI column densities. The HI column density sensitivity (3 sigma over 16 km/s) ranges from ~ 5 x 10^{17} cm^{-2} at 90'' resolution to ~4 x 10^{19} cm^{-2} at the highest resolution of 7''. The HI mass sensitivity (3 sigma over 50 km/s) is ~5.5 X 10^5 M_sun at a distance of 10 Mpc (the median distance of the sample galaxies). The velocity resolution of the data is 1.4 km/s. One of the main science goals of the survey is the detection of cold, accreting gas in the outskirts of the sample galaxies. The sample was selected to cover a range in HI masses, from 10^7 M_sun to almost 10^{11} M_sun, to optimally sample possible accretion scenarios and environments. The distance to the sample galaxies ranges from 3 to 23 Mpc. In this paper, we present the sample selection, survey design, and observation and reduction procedures. We compare the integrated HI fluxes based on the MeerKAT data with those derived from single-dish measurement and find good agreement, indicating that our MeerKAT observations are recovering all flux. We present HI moment maps of the entire sample based on the first ten percent of the survey data, and find that a comparison of the zeroth- and second-moment values shows a clear separation between the physical properties of the HI in areas with star formation and areas without, related to the formation of a cold neutral medium. Finally, we give an overview of the HI-detected companion and satellite galaxies in the 30 fields, five of which have not previously been catalogued. We investigate the relationship between the baryonic angular momentum and mass for a sample of 36 isolated disc galaxies with resolved HI kinematics and infrared WISE photometry drawn from -- and representative in terms of morphologies, stellar masses and HI-to-star fraction of -- the carefully-constructed AMIGA sample of isolated galaxies. Similarly to previous studies performed on non-isolated galaxies, we find that the relation is well described by a power law $j_{bar} \propto M_{bar}^\alpha$. We also find a slope of $\alpha = 0.54 \pm 0.08$ for the AMIGA galaxies, in line with previous studies in the literature; however, we find that the specific angular momenta of the AMIGA galaxies are on average higher than those of non-isolated galaxies in the literature. This is consistent with theories stipulating that environmental processes involving galaxy-galaxy interaction are able to impact the angular momentum content of galaxies. However, no correlation was found between the angular momentum and the degree of isolation, suggesting that there may exist a threshold local number density beyond which the effects of the environment on the angular momentum become important., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

It has been suggested that the bulge-to-total stellar mass ratio or feedback from black holes (BHs), traced by the BH-to-(total stellar) mass ratio, might establish a galaxy's specific star formation rate (sSFR). We reveal that a galaxy's morphology -- reflecting its formation history, particularly accretions and mergers -- is a far better determinant of the sSFR. Consequently, we suggest that galaxy formation models which regulate the sSFR primarily through BH feedback prescriptions or bulge-regulated disc fragmentation consider acquisitions and mergers which establish the galaxy morphology. We additionally make several new observations regarding current ($z\sim0$) star-formation rates. (i) Galaxies with little to no star formation have bulges with an extensive range of stellar masses; bulge mass does not dictate presence/absence on the `star-forming main sequence'. (ii) The (wet merger)-built, dust-rich S0 galaxies are the `green valley' bridging population between elliptical galaxies on the `red sequence' and spiral galaxies on the blue star-forming main sequence. (iii) The dust-poor S0 galaxies are not on the star-forming main sequence nor in the `green valley'. Instead, they wait in the field for gas accretion and/or minor mergers to transform them into spiral galaxies. Mid-infrared sample selection can miss these (primordial) low dust-content and low stellar-luminosity S0 galaxies. Finally, the appearance of the quasi-triangular-shaped galaxy-assembly sequence, previously dubbed the Triangal, which tracks the morphological evolution of galaxies, is revealed in the sSFR-(stellar mass) diagram., Comment: 12 pages (including 12 figures) plus 6 pages of appendices and references. All very massive early-type galaxies contain supermassive blackholes but are these blackholes all sufficiently active to produce detectable radio continuum sources? We have used the 887.5~MHz Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey DR1 to measure the radio emission from morphological early-type galaxies brighter than $K_S=9.5$ selected from the 2MASS Redshift Survey, HyperLEDA and RC3. In line with previous studies, we find median radio power increases with infrared luminosity, with $P_{1.4} \propto L_K^{2.2}$, although the scatter about this relation spans several orders of magnitude. All 40 of the $M_K<-25.7$ early-type galaxies in our sample have measured radio flux densities that are more than $2\sigma$ above the background noise, with $1.4~{\rm GHz}$ radio powers spanning $\sim 3 \times 10^{20}$ to $\sim 3\times 10^{25}~{\rm W~Hz^{-1}}$. Cross matching our sample with integral field spectroscopy of early-type galaxies reveals that the most powerful radio sources preferentially reside in galaxies with relatively low angular momentum (i.e. slow rotators). While the infrared colours of most galaxies in our early-type sample are consistent with passive galaxies with negligible star formation and the radio emission produced by active galactic nuclei or AGN remnants, very low levels of star formation could power the weakest radio sources with little effect on many other star formation rate tracers., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia. 9 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

We present the initial sample of redshifts for 3,839 galaxies in the MeerKAT DEEP2 field -- the deepest $\sim$1.4\,GHz radio field yet observed. Using a spectrophotometric technique combining coarse optical spectra with broadband photometry, we obtain redshifts with $\sigma_z \leq 0.01(1+z)$. The resulting radio luminosity functions between $0.2

We report on the discovery of two potential polar ring galaxies (PRGs) in the WALLABY Pilot Data Release 1 (PDR1). These untargetted detections, cross-matched to NGC 4632 and NGC 6156, are some of the first galaxies where the Hi observations show two distinct components. We used the iDaVIE virtual reality software to separate the anomalous gas from the galactic gas and find that the anomalous gas comprises ~ 50% of the total H i content of both systems. We have generated plausible 3D kinematic models for each galaxy assuming that the rings are circular and inclined at 90 degrees to the galaxy bodies. These models show that the data are consistent with PRGs, but do not definitively prove that the galaxies are PRGs. By projecting these models at different combinations of main disk inclinations, ring orientations, and angular resolutions in mock datacubes, we have further investigated the detectability of similar PRGs in WALLABY. Assuming that these galaxies are indeed PRGs, the detectability fraction, combined with the size distribution of WALLABY PDR1 galaxies, implies an incidence rate of ~ 1% - 3%. We present the serendipitous detection of a new Galactic Supernova Remnant (SNR), G288.8-6.3 using data from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP)-Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) survey. Using multi-frequency analysis, we confirm this object as an evolved Galactic SNR at high Galactic latitude with low radio surface brightness and typical SNR spectral index of $\alpha = -0.41\pm0.12$. To determine the magnetic field strength in SNR G288.8-6.3, we present the first derivation of the equipartition formulae for SNRs with spectral indices $\alpha>-0.5$. The angular size is $1.\!^\circ 8\times 1.\!^\circ 6$ $(107.\!^\prime 6 \times 98.\!^\prime 4)$ and we estimate that its intrinsic size is $\sim40$pc which implies a distance of $\sim1.3$kpc and a position of $\sim140$pc above the Galactic plane. This is one of the largest angular size and closest Galactic SNRs. We derive new empirical scaling relations between WISE mid-infrared galaxy photometry and well-determined stellar masses from SED modeling of a suite of optical-infrared photometry provided by the DR4 Catalogue of the GAMA-KiDS-VIKING survey of the southern G23 field. The mid-infrared source extraction and characterization are drawn from the WISE Extended Source Catalogue (WXSC) and the archival ALLWISE catalog, combining both resolved and compact galaxies in the G23 sample to a redshift of 0.15. Three scaling relations are derived: W1 3.4 micron luminosity versus stellar mass, and WISE W1-W2, W1-W3 colors versus mass-to-light ratio (sensitive to a variety of galaxy types from passive to star-forming). For each galaxy in the sample, we then derive the combined stellar mass from these scaling relations, producing Mstellar estimates with better than $\sim$25-30% accuracy for galaxies with $>$10$^{9}$ Msolar and $<$40 - 50% for lower luminosity dwarf galaxies. We also provide simple prescriptions for rest-frame corrections and estimating stellar masses using only the W1 flux and the W1-W2 color, making stellar masses more accessible to users of the WISE data. Given a redshift or distance, these new scaling relations will enable stellar mass estimates for any galaxy in the sky detected by WISE with high fidelity across a range of mass-to-light., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

Line ratio diagnostics provide valuable clues on the source of ionizing radiation in galaxies with intense black hole accretion and starbursting events, such as local Seyfert or galaxies at the peak of the star formation history. We aim to provide a reference joint optical and mid-IR analysis for studying AGN identification via line ratios and testing predictions from photoionization models. We obtained homogenous optical spectra with the Southern Africa Large Telescope for 42 Seyfert galaxies with Spitzer/IRS spectroscopy and X-ray to mid-IR multiband data available. After confirming the power of the main optical ([OIII]) and mid-IR ([NeV], [OIV], [NeIII]) emission lines in tracing AGN activity, we explore diagrams based on ratios of optical and mid-IR lines by exploiting photoionization models of different ionizing sources (AGN, star formation and shocks). We find that pure AGN photoionization models are good at reproducing observations of Seyfert galaxies with an AGN fractional contribution to the mid-IR (5-40 micron) emission larger than 50 per cent. For targets with a lower AGN contribution these same models do not fully reproduce the observed mid-IR line ratios. Mid-IR ratios like [NeV]/[NeII], [OIV]/[NeII] and [NeIII]/[NeII] show a dependence on the AGN fractional contribution to the mid-IR unlike optical line ratios. An additional source of ionization, either from star formation or radiative shocks, can help explain the observations in the mid-IR. Among combinations of optical and mid-IR diagnostics in line ratio diagrams, only those involving the [OI]/Halpha ratio are promising diagnostics for simultaneously unraveling the relative role of AGN, star formation and, shocks. A proper identification of the dominant ionizing source would require the exploitation of analysis tools based on advanced statistical techniques as well as spatially resolved data., Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. The WALLABY pilot survey has been conducted using the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP). The integrated 21-cm HI line spectra are formed in a very different manner compared to usual single-dish spectra Tully-Fisher measurements. It is thus extremely important to ensure that slight differences (e.g. biases due to missing flux) are quantified and understood in order to maximise the use of the large amount of data becoming available soon. This article is based on four fields for which the data are scientifically interesting by themselves. The pilot data discussed here consist of 614 galaxy spectra at a rest wavelength of 21cm. Of these spectra, 472 are of high enough quality to be used to potentially derive distances using the Tully-Fisher relation. We further restrict the sample to the 251 galaxies whose inclination is sufficiently close to edge-on. For these, we derive Tully-Fisher distances using the deprojected WALLABY velocity widths combined with infrared (WISE W1) magnitudes. The resulting Tully-Fisher distances for the Eridanus, Hydra, Norma and NGC 4636 clusters are 21.5, 53.5, 69.4 and 23.0 Mpc respectively, with uncertainties of 5--10\%, which are better or equivalent to the ones obtained in studies using data obtained with giant single dish telescopes. The pilot survey data show the benefits of WALLABY over previous giant single-dish telescope surveys. WALLABY is expected to detect around half a million galaxies with a mean redshift of $z = 0.05 (200 Mpc)$. We present a new Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) sample of 14 radio Supernova Remnant (SNR) candidates in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This new sample is a significant increase to the known number of older, larger and low surface brightness LMC SNRs. We employ a multi-frequency search for each object and found possible traces of optical and occasionally X-ray emission in several of these 14 SNR candidates. One of these 14 SNR candidates (MCSNR J0522-6543) has multi-frequency properties that strongly indicate a bona fide SNR. We also investigate a sample of 20 previously suggested LMC SNR candidates and confirm the SNR nature of MCSNR J0506-6815. We detect lower surface brightness SNR candidates which were likely formed by a combination of shock waves and strong stellar winds from massive progenitors (and possibly surrounding OB stars). Cluster substructure and ram pressure stripping in individual galaxies are among the primary evidence for the ongoing growth of galaxy clusters as they accrete galaxies and groups from their surroundings. We present a multi-wavelength study of the center of the Hydra I galaxy cluster, including exquisite new MeerKAT HI and DECam Halpha imaging which reveal conclusive evidence for ram pressure stripping in NGC 3312, NGC 3314a and NGC 3314b through compressed HI contours, well-defined HI tails, and ongoing star formation in the stripped gas. In particular, we quantify the stripped material in NGC 3312 and NGC 3314a, which makes up between 8% and 35% of the gas still in the disk, is forming stars at ~0.5 M_Sun yr^-1, and extends ~30-60 kpc from the main disk. The estimated stellar mass in the tails is an order of magnitude less than the HI mass. A fourth "ring" galaxy at the same velocity does not show signs of ram pressure in HI. In addition, we use the HI and stellar morphologies, combined with a Beta model of the hot intracluster medium, to constrain the real distances of the galaxies to the cluster center, and we use the chance alignment of NGC 3314b behind NGC 3314a to break the degeneracy between whether the galaxies are in front or in back of the cluster. The drag seen in the HI tails supports our preferred scenario that NGC 3312 and NGC 3314a are moving towards us as part of a foreground substructure which has already passed its pericenter and is on "out fall" from the cluster. The high surviving HI content of the galaxies may suggest that the substructure/intragroup medium can protect them from the harshest effects of ram pressure, or that in fact the galaxies are on more tangential orbits., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The identification of AGN in large surveys has been hampered by seemingly discordant classifications arising from differing diagnostic methods, usually tracing distinct processes specific to a particular wavelength regime. However, as shown in Yao et al. (2020), the combination of optical emission line measurements and mid-infrared photometry can be used to optimise the discrimination capability between AGN and star formation activity. In this paper we test our new classification scheme by combining the existing GAMA-WISE data with high-quality MeerKAT radio continuum data covering 8 deg$^2$ of the GAMA G23 region. Using this sample of 1 841 galaxies (z < 0.25), we investigate the total infrared (derived from 12$\mu$m) to radio luminosity ratio, q(TIR), and its relationship to optical-infrared AGN and star-forming (SF) classifications. We find that while q(TIR) is efficient at detecting AGN activity in massive galaxies generally appearing quiescent in the infrared, it becomes less reliable for cases where the emission from star formation in the host galaxy is dominant. However, we find that the q(TIR) can identify up to 70 % more AGNs not discernible at optical and/or infrared wavelengths. The median q(TIR) of our SF sample is 2.57 $\pm$ 0.23 consistent with previous local universe estimates.

We present the discovery of highly-collimated radio jets spanning a total of 355 kpc around the nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 2663, and the possible first detection of recollimation on kiloparsec scales. The small distance to the galaxy (~28.5 Mpc) allows us to resolve portions of the jets to examine their structure. We combine multiwavelength data: radio observations by the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), and X-ray data from Chandra, Swift and SRG/eROSITA. We present intensity, rotation measure, polarisation, spectral index and X-ray environment maps. Regions of the southern jet show simultaneous narrowing and brightening, which can be interpreted as a signature of the recollimation of the jet by external, environmental pressure, though it is also consistent with an intermittent Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) or complex internal jet structure. X-ray data suggest that the environment is extremely poor; if the jet is indeed recollimating, the large recollimation scale (40 kpc) is consistent with a slow jet in a low-density environment., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this paper, we present our calibrations of the TF relation in the mid-infrared W1 ($3.4\mu$m) and W2 ($4.6\mu$m) bands, using large samples 848 galaxies and 857 galaxies in the W1 and W2 bands respectively. In this calibration we performed a correction for the cluster population incompleteness bias, and a morphological type correction. The calibration was performed using a new, iterative bivariate fitting procedure. For these calibrations we used the total absolute magnitudes, and HI linewidths $W_{F50}$ derived from the HI global profiles as a measure of the rotational velocities. We then performed two additional calibrations on the same sample using (i) the isophotal magnitudes and (ii) the average rotational velocities measured along the flat sections of the spatially resolved rotation curves of the galaxies, which were obtained from the empirical conversion between rotational velocity definitions. We compared these three calibrations to determine whether the use of isophotal magnitudes, or spatially resolved rotational velocities have a significant impact on the scatter around the TF relations in the W1 and W2 bands. We found that the original calibrations using total magnitudes and \hi linewidths had the smallest total scatters. These calibrations are given by $M_{\rm Tot, W1} = (2.02 \pm 0.44) - (10.08 \pm 0.17)\log_{10}(W_{F50})$ and $M_{\rm Tot, W2} = (2.00 \pm 0.44) - (10.11 \pm 0.17)\log_{10}(W_{F50})$, with associated total scatters of $\sigma_{W1} = 0.68$ and $\sigma_{W2} = 0.69$. Finally, we compared our calibrations in the mid-infrared bands with previous calibrations in the near-infrared J, H and K bands and the long-wavelength optical I band, which used the same two corrections. We report the discovery of J0624-6948, a low-surface brightness radio ring, lying between the Galactic Plane and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). It was first detected at 888 MHz with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), and with a diameter of ~196 arcsec. This source has phenomenological similarities to Odd Radio Circles (ORCs). Significant differences to the known ORCs - a flatter radio spectral index, the lack of a prominent central galaxy as a possible host, and larger apparent size - suggest that J0624-6948 may be a different type of object. We argue that the most plausible explanation for J0624-6948 is an intergalactic supernova remnant due to a star that resided in the LMC outskirts that had undergone a single-degenerate type Ia supernova, and we are seeing its remnant expand into a rarefied, intergalactic environment. We also examine if a massive star or a white dwarf binary ejected from either galaxy could be the supernova progenitor. Finally, we consider several other hypotheses for the nature of the object, including the jets of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) or the remnant of a nearby stellar super-flare., Comment: 20 pages accepted to MNRAS

We present the blind Westerbork Coma Survey probing the HI content of the Coma galaxy cluster with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. The survey covers the inner $\sim$ 1 Mpc around the cluster centre, extending out to 1.5 Mpc towards the south-western NGC 4839 group. The survey probes the atomic gas in the entire Coma volume down to a sensitivity of $\sim$ 10$^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$ and 10$^8$ M$_{\odot}$. Combining automated source finding with source extraction at optical redshifts and visual verification, we obtained 40 HI detections of which 24 are new. Over half of the sample displays perturbed HI morphologies indicative of an ongoing interaction with the cluster environment. With the use of ancillary UV and mid-IR, data we measured their stellar masses and star formation rates and compared the HI properties to a set of field galaxies spanning a similar stellar mass and star formation rate range. We find that $\sim$ 75 % of HI-selected Coma galaxies have simultaneously enhanced star formation rates (by $\sim$ 0.2 dex) and are HI deficient (by $\sim$ 0.5 dex) compared to field galaxies of the same stellar mass. According to our toy model, the simultaneous HI deficiency and enhanced star formation activity can be attributed to either HI stripping of already highly star forming galaxies on a very short timescale, while their H$_2$ content remains largely unaffected, or to HI stripping coupled to a temporary boost of the HI-to-H$_2$ conversion, causing a brief starburst phase triggered by ram pressure before eventually quenching the galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 27 pages, 21 figures

We report on the detection of a large, extended HI cloud complex in the GAMA G23 field, located at a redshift of $z\,\sim\,0.03$, observed as part of the MeerHOGS campaign (a pilot survey to explore the mosaicing capabilities of MeerKAT). The cloud complex, with a total mass of $10^{10.0}\,M_\odot$, lies in proximity to a large galaxy group with $M_\mathrm{dyn}\sim10^{13.5}\,M_\odot$. We identify seven HI peak concentrations, interconnected as a tenuous 'chain' structure, extending $\sim 400\,\mathrm{kpc}$ from east-to-west, with the largest (central) concentration containing $10{^{9.7}}\,M_\odot$ in HI gas distributed across $50\,\mathrm{kpc}$. The main source is not detected in ultra-violet, optical or infrared imaging. The implied gas mass-to-light ($M_\mathrm{HI}$/$L_\mathrm{r}$) is extreme ($>$1000) even in comparison to other 'dark clouds'. The complex has very little kinematic structure ($110\,\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}$), making it difficult to identify cloud rotation. Assuming pressure support, the total mass of the central concentration is $>10^{10.2}\,M_\odot$, while a lower limit to the dynamical mass in the case of full rotational support is $10^{10.4}\,M_\odot$. If the central concentration is a stable structure, it has to contain some amount of unseen matter, but potentially less than is observed for a typical galaxy. It is, however, not clear whether the structure has any gravitationally stable concentrations. We report a faint UV--optical--infrared source in proximity to one of the smaller concentrations in the gas complex, leading to a possible stellar association. The IRAS Revised Bright Galaxy Sample (RBGS) comprises galaxies and unresolved mergers stronger than $S = 5.24$ Jy at $\lambda = 60~\mu\mathrm{m}$ with galactic latitudes $\vert b \vert > 5^\circ$. Nearly all are dusty star-forming galaxies whose radio continuum and far-infrared luminosities are proportional to their current rates of star formation. We used the MeerKAT array of 64 dishes to make $5 \times 3$ min snapshot observations at $\nu = 1.28$ GHz covering all 298 southern (J2000 $\delta < 0^\circ$) RBGS sources identified with external galaxies. The resulting images have $\theta \approx 7.5$ arcsec FHWM resolution and rms fluctuations $\sigma \approx 20~\mu\mathrm{Jy~beam}^{-1} \approx 0.26$ K, low enough to reveal even faint disk emission. The rms position uncertainties are $\sigma_\alpha \approx \sigma_\delta \approx 1$ arcsec relative to accurate near-infrared positions, and the image dynamic ranges are DR $\gtrsim 10^4:1$., Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures To be published in the ApJS

We present the detections of shocked molecular hydrogen (H2) gas in near- and mid-infrared and broad CO in millimeter from the mixed-morphology supernova remnant (SNR) HB~3 (G132.7+1.3) using Palomar WIRC, the Spitzer GLIMPSE360 and WISE surveys, and HHSMT. Our near-infrared narrow-band filter H2 2.12 micron images of HB~3 show that both Spitzer IRAC and WISE 4.6 micron emission originates from shocked H2 gas. The morphology of H2 exhibits thin filamentary structures and a large scale of interaction sites between the HB~3 and nearby molecular clouds. Half of HB~3, the southern and eastern shell of the SNR, emits H2 in a shape of a "butterfly" or "W", indicating the interaction sites between the SNR and dense molecular clouds. Interestingly, the H2 emitting region in the southeast is also co-spatial to the interacting area between HB~3 and the H~II regions of the W3 complex, where we identified star-forming activity. We further explore the interaction between HB~3 and dense molecular clouds with detections of broad CO(3-2) and CO(2-1) molecular lines from the southern and southeastern shells along the H2 emitting region. The widths of the broad lines are 8-20 km/s; the detection of such broad lines is unambiguous, dynamic evidence of the interactions between the SNR and clouds. The CO broad lines are from two branches of the bright, southern H2 shell. We apply the Paris-Durham shock model to the CO line profiles, which infer the shock velocities of 20 - 40 km/s, relatively low densities of 10^{3-4} cm^{-3} and strong (>200 micro Gauss) magnetic fields., Comment: ApJ, in press, 21 pages, 16 figures

Star-forming galaxies are rich reservoirs of dust, both warm and cold. But the cold dust emission is faint alongside the relatively bright and ubiquitous warm dust emission. Recently, evidence for a very cold dust component has also been revealed via millimeter/submillimeter photometry of some galaxies. This component, despite being the most massive of the three dust components in star-forming galaxies, is by virtue of its very low temperature, faint and hard to detect together with the relatively bright emission from warmer dust. Here we analyze the dust content of a carefully selected sample of four galaxies detected by IRAS, WISE, and SPT, whose spectral energy distributions (SEDs) were modeled to constrain their potential cold dust content. Low-frequency radio observations using the GMRT were carried out to segregate cold dust emission from non-thermal emission in millimeter/submillimeter wavebands. We also carried out AstroSat/UVIT observations for some galaxies to constrain their SED at shorter wavelengths so as to enforce energy balance for the SED modeling. We constructed their SEDs across a vast wavelength range (extending from ultraviolet to radio frequencies) by assembling global photometry from GALEX FUV+NUV, UVIT, Johnson BRI, 2MASS, WISE, IRAC, IRAS, AKARI, ISOPHOT, Planck HFI, SPT, and GMRT. The SEDs were modeled with CIGALE to estimate their basic properties, in particular to constrain the masses of their total and very cold dust components. Although the galaxies' dust masses are dominated by warmer dust, there are hints of very cold dust in two of the targets, NGC 7496 and NGC 7590., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures, accepted in MNRAS

We present the first interferometric blind HI survey of the Fornax galaxy cluster, which covers an area of 15 deg$^2$ out to the cluster $R_{vir}$. The survey has a resolution of 67''x95'' and 6.6 km$s^{-1}$ with a 3$\sigma$ sensitivity of N(HI)~2x10$^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$ and MHI 2x10$^7$ M$_\odot$. We detect 16 galaxies out of 200 spectroscopically confirmed Fornax cluster members. The detections cover ~3 orders of magnitude in HI mass, from 8x10$^6$ to 1.5x10$^{10}$ M$_\odot$. They avoid the central, virialised region of the cluster both on the sky and in projected phase-space, showing that they are recent arrivals and that, in Fornax, HI is lost within a crossing time, ~2 Gyr. Half of these galaxies exhibit a disturbed HI morphology, including several cases of asymmetries, tails, offsets between HI and optical centres, and a case of a truncated HI disc suggesting that they have been interacting within or on their way to Fornax. Our HI detections are HI-poorer and form stars at a lower rate than non-cluster galaxies in the same $M_\star$ range. Low mass galaxies are more strongly affected throughout their infall towards the cluster. The MHI/$M_\star$ ratio of Fornax galaxies is comparable to that in the Virgo cluster. At fixed $M_\star$, our HI detections follow the non-cluster relation between MHI and the star formation rate, and we argue that this implies that so far they have lost their HI on a timescale $\gtrsim$1-2 Gyr. Deeper inside the cluster HI removal is likely to proceed faster, as confirmed by a population of HI-undetected but H$_2$-detected star-forming galaxies. Based on ALMA data, we find a large scatter in H$_2$-to-HI mass ratio, with several galaxies showing an unusually high ratio that is probably caused by faster HI removal. We identify an HI-rich subgroup of possible interacting galaxies dominated by NGC 1365, where pre-processing is likey to have taken place.

Scientists across all disciplines increasingly rely on machine learning algorithms to analyse and sort datasets of ever increasing volume and complexity. Although trends and outliers are easily extracted, careful and close inspection will still be necessary to explore and disentangle detailed behavior, as well as identify systematics and false positives. We must therefore incorporate new technologies to facilitate scientific analysis and exploration. Astrophysical data is inherently multi-parameter, with the spatial-kinematic dimensions at the core of observations and simulations. The arrival of mainstream virtual-reality (VR) headsets and increased GPU power, as well as the availability of versatile development tools for video games, has enabled scientists to deploy such technology to effectively interrogate and interact with complex data. In this paper we present development and results from custom-built interactive VR tools, called the iDaVIE suite, that are informed and driven by research on galaxy evolution, cosmic large-scale structure, galaxy-galaxy interactions, and gas/kinematics of nearby galaxies in survey and targeted observations. In the new era of Big Data ushered in by major facilities such as the SKA and LSST that render past analysis and refinement methods highly constrained, we believe that a paradigm shift to new software, technology and methods that exploit the power of visual perception, will play an increasingly important role in bridging the gap between statistical metrics and new discovery. Galaxy clusters are some of largest structures in the universe. These very dense environments tend to be home to higher numbers of evolved galaxies that what is found in lower density environments. It is well known that dense environments can influence the evolution of galaxies through the removal of the neutral gas (HI) reservoirs which fuel star formation. It is unclear which environment has a stronger effect: the local environment (i.e. the substructure within the cluster), or the cluster itself. Using the new HI data from the Westerbork Coma Survey, we explore the average HI content of galaxies across the cluster comparing galaxies that reside in substructure to those that do not. We apply to the Dressler-Shectman test to our newly compiled redshift catalogue of the Coma cluster to search for substructure. With so few of the Coma galaxies directly detected in HI, we use the HI stacking technique to probe average HI content below what can be directly detected. Using the Dressler-Shectman test, we find 15 substructures within the footprint of the Westerbork Coma Survey. We compare the average HI content for galaxies within substructure to those not in substructure. Using the HI stacking technique, we find that the Coma galaxies (for which are not detected in HI) are more than 10--50 times more HI deficient than expected which supports the scenario of an extremely efficient and rapid quenching mechanism. By studying the galaxies that are not directly detected in HI, we also find Coma to be more HI deficient than previously thought., Comment: 18 pages (+ 21 page appendix), 23 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present and explore the resolved atomic hydrogen (HI) content of 13 HI-rich and late-type dominated groups denoted `Choirs'. We quantify the HI content of the Choir galaxies with respect to the median of the HI-mass fraction ($f_{\textrm{HI}}$) of their grandparent HIPASS sample. We find that the HI mass fraction of the Choir galaxies is dispersed around the HIPASS median in the range $-1.4 \leq \Delta f_{\textrm{HI}}\textrm{[dex]}\leq 0.7$, from HI-excess to HI-deficient galaxy regime. The HI-excess/HI-deficient galaxies contain more/less than 2.5 times their expected HI content with respect to the HIPASS median. We show and discuss that the environmental processing in Choirs occurs via tidal stripping and galaxy mergers. Our analysis suggests that tidal stripping contributes to the loss of the HI, while galaxy mergers contribute to the enhancement of the HI. Exploring the mid-infrared properties of Choir galaxies we find possible environmental processing in only nine Choir galaxies, which indicates that environmental processing is more perceptible in the HI content than the mid-infrared properties. Moreover, we find that environmental processing occurs in Choir groups regardless of their global environment, whether they are in isolation or in proximity to the denser structures, such as cosmic web filaments. We explore possible scenarios of the Choirs evolution, taking into account their HI content, velocity dispersion, crossing time and their global environment. We conclude that the most likely evolution for the majority of Choir groups is that they will become more compact as their members undergo multiple HI-rich mergers., Comment: 39 pages, 31 figures and 9 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the results of three commissioning HI observations obtained with the MeerKAT radio telescope. These observations make up part of the preparation for the forthcoming MHONGOOSE nearby galaxy survey, which is a MeerKAT large survey project that will study the accretion of gas in galaxies and the link between gas and star formation. We used the available HI data sets, along with ancillary data at other wavelengths, to study the morphology of the MHONGOOSE sample galaxy, ESO 302-G014, which is a nearby gas-rich dwarf galaxy. We find that ESO 302-G014 has a lopsided, asymmetric outer disc with a low column density. In addition, we find a tail or filament of HI clouds extending away from the galaxy, as well as an isolated HI cloud some 20 kpc to the south of the galaxy. We suggest that these features indicate a minor interaction with a low-mass galaxy. Optical imaging shows a possible dwarf galaxy near the tail, but based on the current data, we cannot confirm any association with ESO 302-G014. Nonetheless, an interaction scenario with some kind of low-mass companion is still supported by the presence of a significant amount of molecular gas, which is almost equal to the stellar mass, and a number of prominent stellar clusters, which suggest recently triggered star formation. These data show that MeerKAT produces exquisite imaging data. The forthcoming full-depth survey observations of ESO 302-G014 and other sample galaxies will, therefore, offer insights into the fate of neutral gas as it moves from the intergalactic medium onto galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present a detailed study of emission-line systems in the GAMA G23 region, making use of $\textit{WISE}$ photometry that includes carefully measured resolved sources. After applying several cuts to the initial catalogue of $\sim$41,000 galaxies, we extract a sample of 9,809 galaxies. We then compare the spectral diagnostic (BPT) classification of 1154 emission-line galaxies (38$\%$ resolved in W1) to their location in the $\textit{WISE}$ colour-colour diagram, leading to the creation of a new zone for mid-infrared "warm" galaxies located 2$\sigma$ above the star-forming sequence, below the standard $\textit{WISE}$ AGN region. We find that the BPT and $\textit{WISE}$ diagrams agree on the classification for 85$\%$ and 8$\%$ of the galaxies as non-AGN (star forming = SF) and AGN, respectively, and disagree on $\sim$7$\%$ of the entire classified sample. 39$\%$ of the AGN (all types) are broad-line systems for which the [\ion{N}{ii}] and [H$\alpha$] fluxes can barely be disentangled, giving in most cases spurious [\ion{N}{ii}]/[H$\alpha$] flux ratios. However, several optical AGN appear to be completely consistent with SF in $\textit{WISE}$. We argue that these could be low power AGN, or systems whose hosts dominate the IR emission. Alternatively, given the sometimes high [\ion{O}{iii}] luminosity in these galaxies, the emission lines may be generated by shocks coming from super-winds associated with SF rather than the AGN activity. Based on our findings, we have created a new diagnostic: [W1-W2] vs [\ion{N}{ii}]/[H$\alpha$], which has the virtue of separating SF from AGN and high-excitation sources. We present a catalogue of 261 new infrared selected members of the 3C129 galaxy cluster. The cluster, located at $z \approx$ 0.02, forms part of the Perseus-Pisces filament and is obscured at optical wavelengths due to its location in the zone of avoidance. We identified these galaxies using the $J-$ and $K-$band imaging data provided by the UKIDSS Galactic Plane Survey within an area with a radius of $1.1^{\circ}$ centred on the X-ray emission of the cluster at $\ell, b \approx 160.52^{\circ}, 0.27^{\circ}$. A total of 26 of the identified galaxy members have known redshifts 24 of which are from our 2016 Westerbork HI survey and two are from optical spectroscopy. An analysis of the galaxy density at the core of the 3C129 cluster shows it to be less dense than the Coma and Norma clusters, but comparable to the galaxy density in the core of the Perseus cluster. From an assessment of the spatial and velocity distributions of the 3C129 cluster galaxies that have redshifts, we derived a velocity of $cz = 5227 \pm 171$ km/s and $\sigma = 1097 \pm 252$ km/s for the main cluster, with a substructure in the cluster outskirts at $cz = 6923 \pm 71$ km/s with $\sigma = 422 \pm 100$ km/s. We present the galaxy group catalogue for the recently-completed 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS, Macri2019) which consists of 44572 redshifts, including 1041 new measurements for galaxies mostly located within the Zone of Avoidance. The galaxy group catalogue is generated by using a novel, graph-theory based, modified version of the Friends-of-Friends algorithm. Several graph-theory examples are presented throughout this paper, including a new method for identifying substructures within groups. The results and graph-theory methods have been thoroughly interrogated against previous 2MRS group catalogues and a Theoretical Astrophysical Observatory (TAO) mock by making use of cutting-edge visualization techniques including immersive facilities, a digital planetarium, and virtual reality. This has resulted in a stable and robust catalogue with on-sky positions and line-of-sight distances within 0.5 Mpc and 2 Mpc, respectively, and has recovered all major groups and clusters. The final catalogue consists of 3022 groups, resulting in the most complete "whole-sky" galaxy group catalogue to date. We determine the 3D positions of these groups, as well as their luminosity and comoving distances, observed and corrected number of members, richness metric, velocity dispersion, and estimates of $R_{200}$ and $M_{200}$. Combining high-fidelity group characterisation from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey and source-tailored $z<0.1$ photometry from the WISE survey, we present a comprehensive study of the properties of ungrouped galaxies, compared to 497 galaxy groups (4$\leq$ N$_{\rm FoF}$ $\leq$ 20) as a function of stellar and halo mass. Ungrouped galaxies are largely unimodal in WISE color, the result of being dominated by star-forming, late-type galaxies. Grouped galaxies, however, show a clear bimodality in WISE color, which correlates strongly with stellar mass and morphology. We find evidence for an increasing early-type fraction, in stellar mass bins between $10^{10}\lesssim$M$_{\rm stellar} \lesssim10^{11}$ M$_\odot$, with increasing halo mass. Using ungrouped, late-type galaxies with star-forming colors (W2$-$W3$>$3), we define a star-forming main-sequence (SFMS), which we use to delineate systems that have moved below the sequence ("quenched" for the purposes of this work). We find that with increasing halo mass, the relative number of late-type systems on the SFMS decreases, with a corresponding increase in early-type, quenched systems at high stellar mass (M$_{\rm stellar}>{10}^{10.5}$ M$_\odot$), consistent with mass quenching. Group galaxies with masses M$_{\rm stellar}<{10}^{10.5}$ M$_\odot$ show evidence of quenching consistent with environmentally-driven processes. The stellar mass distribution of late-type, quenched galaxies suggests they may be an intermediate population as systems transition from being star-forming and late-type to the "red sequence". Finally, we use the projected area of groups on the sky to extract groups that are (relatively) compact for their halo mass. Although these show a marginal increase in their proportion of high mass and early-type galaxies compared to nominal groups, a clear increase in quenched fraction is not evident., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Past studies of compact active galactic nuclei (AGNs), the dominant population at high radio frequencies, selected them using flat spectral index criteria. This biases the sample due to the steepening of AGN spectra at high radio frequencies. We improve upon this by selecting 3610 compact AGNs using their angular size information ($\sim$0.15 arcsec scale) from the Australia Telescope 20 GHz (AT20G) high-angular-resolution catalogue. We cross-match these against the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer All-WISE catalogue and present a catalogue with 3300 (91%) matches, 91 (3%) rejects and 219 (6%) nondetections that are excellent high redshift candidates. Of the matched compact AGNs, 92% exhibit QSO mid-infrared colours (W1-W2>0.5). Therefore, our sample of high frequency compact sources has a very high rate of identification with mid-infrared QSOs. We find counterparts for 88% of 387 compact steep-spectrum (CSS) sources in the AT20G survey, 82%$\pm$5% of which exhibit QSO mid-infrared colours and have moderate redshifts (median redshift = 0.82), while those dominated by host galaxy colours in mid-infrared have lower redshifts (median redshift = 0.13). The latter classified into late- and early-type galaxies using their mid-infrared colours shows a majority (68%$\pm$4%) have colours characteristic of late-type galaxies. Thus, we find that a larger fraction of these CSS sources are embedded in hosts with higher gas densities than average early-type galaxies. We compare mid-infrared colours of our AGNs against those reported for AGNs primarily selected using non-radio techniques. This shows that mid-infrared SED of high frequency selected compact radio AGN is comparatively less red, possibly due to contributions from their hosts., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 21 pages, 18 figures

The Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind surveY (WALLABY) is a next-generation survey of neutral hydrogen (HI) in the Local Universe. It uses the widefield, high-resolution capability of the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), a radio interferometer consisting of 36 x 12-m dishes equipped with Phased-Array Feeds (PAFs), located in an extremely radio-quiet zone in Western Australia. WALLABY aims to survey three-quarters of the sky (-90 degr < Dec < +30 degr) to a redshift of z < 0.26, and generate spectral line image cubes at ~30 arcsec resolution and ~1.6 mJy/beam per 4 km/s channel sensitivity. ASKAP's instantaneous field of view at 1.4 GHz, delivered by the PAF's 36 beams, is about 30 sq deg. At an integrated signal-to-noise ratio of five, WALLABY is expected to detect over half a million galaxies with a mean redshift of z ~ 0.05 (~200 Mpc). The scientific goals of WALLABY include: (a) a census of gas-rich galaxies in the vicinity of the Local Group; (b) a study of the HI properties of galaxies, groups and clusters, in particular the influence of the environment on galaxy evolution; and (c) the refinement of cosmological parameters using the spatial and redshift distribution of low-bias gas-rich galaxies. For context we provide an overview of previous large-scale HI surveys. We present a detailed analysis of the radio galaxy PKS 2250-351, a giant of 1.2 Mpc projected size, its host galaxy, and its environment. We use radio data from the Murchison Widefield Array, the upgraded Giant Metre-wavelength Radio Telescope, the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder, and the Australia Telescope Compact Array to model the jet power and age. Optical and infra-red data come from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey and provide information on the host galaxy and environment. GAMA spectroscopy confirms that PKS 2250-351 lies at z=0.2115 in the irregular, and likely unrelaxed, cluster Abell 3936. We find its host is a massive, `red and dead' elliptical galaxy with negligible star formation but with a highly obscured active galactic nucleus dominating the mid-infrared emission. Assuming it lies on the local M-sigma relation it has an Eddington accretion rate of lambda_EDD~0.014. We find that the lobe-derived jet power (a time-averaged measure) is an order of magnitude greater than the hotspot-derived jet power (an instantaneous measure). We propose that over the lifetime of the observed radio emission (~300 Myr) the accretion has switched from an inefficient advection dominated mode to a thin-disc efficient mode, consistent with the decrease in jet power. We also suggest that the asymmetric radio morphology is due to its environment, with the host of PKS 2250-351 lying to the west of the densest concentration of galaxies in Abell 3936., Comment: 16 pages and 8 figures, accepted for publication in PASA

We present mid-infrared photometry and measured global properties of the 100 largest galaxies in the sky, including the Magellanic Clouds, Local Group galaxies M31 and M33, the Fornax and Virgo Galaxy Cluster giants, and many of the most spectacular Messier objects (e.g., M51 and M83). This is the first release of a larger catalog of extended sources as imaged in the mid-infrared, called the WISE Extended Source Catalogue (WXSC). In this study we measure their global attributes, including integrated flux, surface brightness and radial distribution. The largest of the large are the LMC, SMC and the Andromeda Galaxy, which are also the brightest mid-infrared galaxies in the sky. We interrogate the large galaxies using WISE colors, which serve as proxies for four general types of galaxies: bulge-dominated spheroidals, intermediate semi-quiescent disks, star-forming spirals, and AGN-dominated. The colors reveal a tight "sequence" that spans 5 magnitudes in W2-W3 color, ranging from early to late-types, and low to high star-forming activity; we fit the functional form given by: ${\rm (W1-W2)} = [0.015 \times {\rm e}^{ \frac{{\rm (W2-W3)}}{1.38} }] - 0.08$. Departures from this sequence may reveal nuclear, starburst, and merging events. Physical properties and luminosity attributes are computed, notably the diameter, aggregate stellar mass and the dust-obscured star formation activity. We introduce the 'pinwheel' diagram which depicts physical properties with respect to the median value observed for WISE galaxies in the local universe. Utilized with the WXSC, this diagram will delineate between different kinds of galaxies, identifying those with similar star formation and structural properties. Finally, we present the mid-infrared photometry of the 25 brightest globular clusters in the sky, including Omega Centauri, 47 Tucanae and a number of famed night-sky targets (e.g. M 13). We report the discovery of a new Small Magellanic Cloud Pulsar Wind Nebula (PWN) at the edge of the Supernova Remnant (SNR)-DEM S5. The pulsar powered object has a cometary morphology similar to the Galactic PWN analogs PSR B1951+32 and 'the mouse'. It is travelling supersonically through the interstellar medium. We estimate the Pulsar kick velocity to be in the range of 700-2000 km/s for an age between 28-10 kyr. The radio spectral index for this SNR PWN pulsar system is flat (-0.29 $\pm$ 0.01) consistent with other similar objects. We infer that the putative pulsar has a radio spectral index of -1.8, which is typical for Galactic pulsars. We searched for dispersion measures (DMs) up to 1000 cm/pc^3 but found no convincing candidates with a S/N greater than 8. We produce a polarisation map for this PWN at 5500 MHz and find a mean fractional polarisation of P $\sim 23$ percent. The X-ray power-law spectrum (Gamma $\sim 2$) is indicative of non-thermal synchrotron emission as is expected from PWN-pulsar system. Finally, we detect DEM S5 in Infrared (IR) bands. Our IR photometric measurements strongly indicate the presence of shocked gas which is expected for SNRs. However, it is unusual to detect such IR emission in a SNR with a supersonic bow-shock PWN. We also find a low-velocity HI cloud of $\sim 107$ km/s which is possibly interacting with DEM S5. We present a sample of 91 HI galaxies with little or no star formation and discuss the analysis of the integral field unit (IFU) spectra of 28 of these galaxies. We identified HI galaxies from the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey Catalog (HICAT) with Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) colours consistent with low specific star formation (< 10$^{-10.4}$ yr$^{-1}$), and obtained optical IFU spectra with the Wide-Field Spectrograph (WiFeS). Visual inspection of the PanSTARRS, Dark Energy Survey, and Carnegie-Irvine imaging of 62 galaxies reveals that at least 32 galaxies in the sample have low levels of star formation, primarily in arms/rings. New IFU spectra of 28 of these galaxies reveal 3 galaxies with central star formation, 1 galaxy with low-ionisation nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs), 20 with extended low-ionisation emission-line regions (LIERs) and 4 with high excitation Seyfert (Sy) emission. From the spectroscopic analysis of HI-selected galaxies with little star formation, we conclude that 75% of this population are LINERs/LIERs.

Quadruply lensed quasars are extremely rare objects, but incredibly powerful cosmological tools. Only few dozen are known in the whole sky. Here we present the spectroscopic confirmation of two new quadruplets WG0214-2105 and WG2100-4452 discovered by Agnello & Spiniello (2018) within the Dark Energy Survey (DES) public footprints. We have conducted spectroscopic follow-up of these systems with the Southern African Large Telescope as part of a program that aims at confirming the largest possible number of optically selected strong gravitational lensing systems in the Equatorial and Southern Hemisphere. For both systems, we present the spectra for the sources and deflectors that allowed us to estimate the source redshifts and unambiguously confirm their lensing nature. For the brighter deflector (WG2100-4452), we measure the stellar velocity dispersion from the spectrum. We also obtain photometry for both lenses, directly from DES multi-band images, isolating the lens galaxies from the quasar images. One of the quadruplets, WG0214-2105, was also observed by Pan-STARRS, allowing us to estimate the apparent brightness of each quasar image at two different epochs, and thus to find evidence for flux variability. This result could suggest a microlensing event for the faintest components, although intrinsic variability cannot be excluded with only two epochs. Finally, we present simple lens models for both quadruplets, obtaining Einstein radii, SIE velocity dispersions, ellipticities, and position angles of the lens systems, as well as time delay predictions assuming a concordance cosmological model., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS, 10 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables. We have calibrated the 6.5 m James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) mid-infrared filters as star formation rate indicators, using JWST photometry synthesized from $Spitzer$ spectra of 49 low redshift galaxies, which cover a wider luminosity range than most previous studies. We use Balmer decrement corrected $\rm{H\alpha}$ luminosity and synthesized mid-infrared photometry to empirically calibrate the $Spitzer$, WISE and JWST filters as star formation rate indicators. Our $Spitzer$ and WISE calibrations are in good agreement with recent calibrations from the literature. While mid-infrared luminosity may be directly proportional to star formation rate for high luminosity galaxies, we find a power-law relationship between mid-infrared luminosity and star formation rate for low luminosity galaxies ($L_{\rm H\alpha} \leq 10^{43}~{\rm erg~s^{-1}}$). We find that for galaxies with a $\rm{H\alpha}$ luminosity of $\rm{10^{40}}~erg~s^{-1}$ (corresponding to a star formation rate of $\sim 0.055~{\rm M_\odot~yr^{-1}}$), the corresponding JWST mid-infrared $\nu L_{\nu}$ luminosity is between $\rm{10^{40.50}}$ and $\rm{10^{41.00}}~erg~s^{-1}$. Power-law fits of JWST luminosity as a function of $\rm{H\alpha}$ luminosity have indices between 1.17 and 1.32. We find that the scatter in the JWST filter calibrations decreases with increasing wavelength from 0.39 to 0.20 dex, although F1000W is an exception where the scatter is just 0.24 dex., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters; 9 pages, 4 figures and 1 table

UGC 10214 is a minor merger in which a dwarf galaxy has interacted with a large spiral galaxy $\sim$250 Myr ago and produced a perturbed disk and a giant tidal tail. We use a multiwavelength dataset in order to study the present and past star formation rate (SFR) and its relation to the gas and stellar mass at a spatial resolution down to 4 kpc. UGC 10214 is a very massive (stellar mass $M_{{\rm \star}}$ = $1.28\times 10^{11}$$M_\odot$) galaxy with a low gas fraction ($M_{{\rm gas}}$/$M_{{\rm \star}}$ = 0.24), a high molecular gas fraction ($M_{{\rm H}_2}$/$M_{\rm HI}$ = 0.4) and a modest SFR (2-5 $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$). The comparison of the molecular gas mass and current SFR gives a molecular gas depletion time of about $\sim$ 2 Gyr (based on H$\alpha$), comparable to those of normal spiral galaxies. Both from a comparison of the H$\alpha$ emission, tracing the current SFR, and far-ultraviolet (FUV) emission, tracing the recent SFR during the past tens of Myr, as well as from spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting with CIGALE, we find that the SFR has increased by a factor of about 2-3 during the recent past. This increase is particularly noticeable in the centre of the galaxy. A pixel-to-pixel comparison of the SFR, molecular gas mass and stellar mass shows that the central region has had a depressed FUV-traced SFR, both compared to the molecular gas and the stellar mass, whereas the H$\alpha$-traced SFR shows a normal level. The atomic and molecular gas distribution is asymmetric, but the position-velocity diagram along the major axis shows a pattern of regular rotation. We conclude that the minor merger has most likely caused variations in the SFR in the past resulting in a moderate increase of the SFR, but it has not perturbed the gas significantly so that the molecular depletion time remains normal., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, in press (Astronomy & Astrophysics)

In this note we identify and characterize the ultraviolet-infrared color-magnitude relation of star-forming galaxies. The ultraviolet to mid-infrared flux ratios of star-forming galaxies span over two orders of magnitude and show a clear dependence on absolute magnitude from M_W3 ~ -13 to M_W3 ~ -25, which may present problems for models of galaxy spectral energy distributions that have been largely verified on ~L* galaxies. The color-magnitude relation of star-forming galaxies illustrates the broadband spectral diversity of star-forming galaxies that results from established correlations between the physical properties and mass, including the mass-metallicity relation., Comment: RNAAS, in press, 3 pages, 1 figure

For the Local Group Scd galaxy M 33 this paper presents a multi-scale study of the relationship between the monochromatic star formation rate (SFR) estimator based on 12 $\mu$m emission and the total SFR estimator based on a combination of far-ultraviolet and 24 $\mu$m emission. We show the 12 $\mu$m emission to be a linear estimator of total SFR on spatial scales from 782 pc down to 49 pc, over almost four magnitudes in SFR. These results therefore extend to sub-kpc length scales the analogous results from other studies for global length scales. We use high-resolution HI and $^{12}\mathrm{CO}(J=2-1)$ image sets from the literature to compare the star formation to the neutral gas. For the full range of length scales we find well-defined power-law relationships between 12 $\mu$m-derived SFR surface densities and neutral gas surface densities. For the H$_\mathrm{2}$ gas component almost all correlations are consistent with being linear. No evidence is found for a breakdown in the star formation law at small length scales in M 33 reported by other authors. We show that the average star formation efficiency in M 33 is roughly $10^{-9}$ yr$^{-1}$ and that it remains constant down to giant molecular cloud length scales. Toomre and shear-based models of the star formation threshold are shown to inaccurately account for the star formation activity in the inner disc of M 33. Finally, we clearly show that the HI saturation limit of $\approx 9$ M$_{\odot}$ pc$^{-2}$ reported in the literature for other galaxies is not an intrinsic property of M 33 - it is systematically introduced as an artefact of spatially smoothing the data., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present initial results from a deep neutral hydrogen (HI) survey of the HALOGAS galaxy sample, which includes the spiral galaxies NGC891, NGC925, NGC4414, and NGC4565, performed with the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT). The resulting observations cover at least four deg$^2$ around these galaxies with an average 5$\sigma$ detection limit of 1.2$\times$10$^{18}$ cm$^{-2}$ over a velocity range of 20 km s$^{-1}$ and angular scale of 9.1$'$. In addition to detecting the same total flux as the GBT data, the spatial distribution of the GBT and original Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) data match well at equal spatial resolutions. The HI mass fraction below HI column densities of 10$^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$ is, on average, 2\%. We discuss the possible origins of low column density HI of nearby spiral galaxies. The absence of a considerable amount of newly detected HI by the GBT indicates these galaxies do not have significant extended diffuse HI structures, and suggests future surveys planned with the SKA and its precursors must go \textit{at least} as deep as 10$^{17}$ cm$^{-2}$ in column density to significantly increase the probability of detecting HI associated with the cosmic web and/or cold mode accretion., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal; 28 pages, 15 figures
