Low-power amplifier-discriminators based on a so-called NINO architecture have been developed with high time resolution for the readout of radiation detectors. Two different circuits were integrated in the NINO13 chip, processed in IBM 130 nm CMOS technology. The LCO version (Low Capacitance and consumption Optimization) was designed for potential use as front-end electronics in the Gigatracker of the NA62 experiment at CERN. It was developed as pixel readout for solid-state pixel detectors to permit minimum ionizing particle detection with less than 180 ps rms resolution per pixel on the output pulse, for power consumption below 300 [micro]W per pixel. The HCO version (High Capacitance Optimization) was designed with 4 mW power consumption per channel to provide timing resolution below 20 ps rms on the output pulse, for charges above 10 fC. Results presented show the potential of the LCO and HCO circuits for the precise timing readout of solid-state detectors, vacuum tubes or gas detectors, for applications in high energy physics, bio-technologies or medical imaging. This paper describes the modeling of a standard 0.25 [micro]m CMOS technology at cryogenic temperatures. In the first step of the work, the parameters of the EKV v2.6 model were extracted at different temperatures (300, 150, and 70 K). The extracted parameters were then used to optimize the performance of a room temperature designed active feedback front-end preamplifier (AFP) at 130 K. The results show that with a small adjustment of the extracted parameters it is possible to have a reasonable model at low temperatures. By optimizing the bias conditions at 130 K, a fall time down to 1.5 ns and a double pulse resolution of 6.5 ns were measured for NA60 proton beamscope. The proposed approach will also allow a low temperature design optimization for future projects, which will not be possible using only standard models provided by the foundry. Research was conducted to test whether reduced body resistance in partially-depleted silicon-on-insulator metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors can still promote undesirable effects. Large transistors with high transconductance were utilized to study the noise. Measurements were performed in the linear region of operation while the transistor was biased with a source-drain voltage. Results indicated the presence of an additional noise component.

This paper has been written to announce the design of a CMOS charge to voltage amplifier and it¹s integration within an analog memory. Together they provide the necessary front end electronics for the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) preshower detector systeAspell,Pm in the LHC experiment foreseen at the CERN particle physics laboratory. The design and measurements of the amplifier realised in a 1.5mm bulk CMOS process as a 16 channel prototype chip are presented. Results show the mean gain and peaking time of = 1.74mV/mip, = 18ns with channel to channel variations; s(peak_voltage) = 8% and s(peak_time) = 6.5%. The dynamic range is shown to be linear over 400mips with an integral non linearity (INL)=0.05mV as expressed in terms of sigma from the mean gain over the 400mip range. The measured noise of the amplifier was ENC=1800+41e/pF with a power consumption of 2.4mW/channel. The amplifier can support extreme levels of leakage current. The gain remains constant for up to 200mA of leakage current. The integration of this amplifier within a 32 channel, 128 cell analog memory chip ³DYNLDR² is then demonstrated. The DYNLDR offers sampling at 40MHz with a storage time of up to 3.2ms. It provides continuous Write/Read access with no dead time. Triggered data is protected within the memory until requested for readout which is performed at 2.5MHz. The memory is designed to have a steerable dc level enabling maximum dynamic range performance. Measurements of the DYNLDR are presented confirming the original amplifier performance. The memory itself has a very low pedestal non uniformity (s(ped)) of 0.9mV and a gain of 10mV/mip.

- Abstract
Radiation hard monolithic particle sensors can be fabricated by a vertical integration of amorphous silicon particle sensors on top of CMOS readout chip. Two types of such particle sensors are presented here using either thick diodes or microchannel plates. The first type based on amorphous silicon diodes exhibits high spatial resolution due to the short lateral carrier collection. Combination of an amorphous silicon thick diode with microstrip detector geometries permits to achieve micrometer spatial resolution beneficial for high accuracy beam positioning. Microchannel plates based on amorphous silicon were successfully fabricated and multiplication of electrons was observed. This material may solve some of the problems related to conventional microchannel devices. Issues potential and limits of these detectors are presented and discussed.
