Microwave and RF filters play an important role in communication systems and due to the proliferation of radar, satellite, and mobile wireless systems there is a need for design methods that can satisfy the ever increasing demand for accuracy, reliability, and fast development times. This book provides modern design techniques for a wide variety of microwave filters operating over a frequency range from 1 GHz to 35 GHz. It has grown out of the authors own research and teaching and as such has a unity of methodology and style, essential for a smooth reading. The book is intended for researchers and RF and microwave engineers but is also suitable for an advanced graduate course in the subject area. Furthermore, it is possible to choose material from the book to supplement traditional courses in microwave filter design. The fundamental principles that can be applied to the synthesis and design of microwave filters are first recalled in a concise manner. Each of the ten design chapters provides a complete analysis and modeling of the microwave structure used for filtering as well as the design methodology. We hope that this will provide the researcher with a set of approaches that he/she could use for current and future microwave filter designs. We also emphasize the practical nature of the subject by summarizing the design steps and giving numerous examples of filter realizations and measured responses so that RF and microwave engineers can have an appreciation of each filter in view of their needs. This approach, we believe, has produced a coherent, practical and real-life treatment of the subject. The book is therefore theoretical but also experimental with over 20 microwave filter realizations.

International audience; Abstract – Two BiFET LNAs are here reported, implemented in a 0.25µm BiCMOS technology from ST Microelectronics. First of them depicts at 15.5dB and 2.85dB, S21 and Noise Figure (NF) respectively, under 2mA current consumption. The second realization operates at 23GHz for Mini-Link application. It provides a 14dB gain and 7dB@22GHz NF for a 8.2 mA current consumption under 2.5 V. Both circuits were designed according to a design flow.

At present, microwave filters occupy a prominent place in modern communication systems, which is due to the proliferation of radar, satellite, and mobile wireless systems. This development deals with the modern design techniques of a wide variety of RF and microwave filters, giving both the theory and complete design examples with experimental results of filters designed over a frequency range extending from 1 GHz to millimeter range. This special issue on recent theoretical and experimental results of research in the RF and microwave filters. The authors have written their contributions keeping in mind the researchers but also the practicing engineers as their primarily audience. The papers are self-contained and the readers require a standard knowledge of network analysis and synthesis.This special issue is devoted to a lot of aspects of passive and active filters synthesis: bi-mode filters, active and tunable filters, CAD tools and new structures and BAW filters.

International audience

The development of information requires serious efforts in the microwave domain (and also in RF domain) so that systems, subsystems, devices have to be studied seriously to this innovative technology. This special issue “Microwave filters and amplifiers” focuses on the state of the art of these technologies and gives the research made in the IXL Laboratory in University of Bordeaux in collaboration with the CNRS (French National Center of Research and Sciences).
