Large polarons are known to form in lead halide perovskites (LHPs). Photoinduced isolated polarons at low densities have been well-researched, but many-body interactions at elevated polaron densities, exceeding the Mott criterion (i.e., Mott polaron density), have remained elusive. Here, employing ultrafast terahertz spectroscopy, we identify a stable Mott polaron state in LHPs at which the polaron wavefunctions start to overlap. The Mott polaron density is determined to be ∼1018 cm-3, in good agreement with theoretical calculations based on the Feynman polaron model. The electronic phase transition across the Mott density is found to be universal in LHPs and independent of the constituent ions. Exceeding the Mott polaron density, excess photoinjected charge carriers annihilate quickly within tens to hundreds of picoseconds, before reaching the stable and long-lived Mott state. The relaxation of the above-gap ("hot") carriers in lead halide perovskites (LHPs) is important for applications in photovoltaics and offers insights into carrier-carrier and carrier-phonon interactions. However, the role of quantum confinement in the hot carrier dynamics of nanosystems is still disputed. Here, we devise a single approach, ultrafast pump- push-probe spectroscopy, to study carrier cooling in six different size-controlled LHP nanomaterials. In cuboidal nanocrystals, we observe only a weak size effect on the cooling dynamics. In contrast, two-dimensional systems show suppression of the hot phonon bottleneck effect common in bulk perovskites. The proposed kinetic model describes the intrinsic and density-dependent cooling times accurately in all studied perovskite systems using only carrier-carrier, carrier-phonon, and excitonic coupling constants. Conjugated polymers with glycol-based chains, are emerging as a material class with promising applications as organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors, particularly in bioelectronics and thermoelectrics. However, little is still known about their microstructure and the role of the side chains in determining intermolecular interactions and polymer packing. Here, we use the combination of electrospray deposition and scanning tunneling microscopy to determine the microstructure of prototypical glycolated conjugated polymers (pgBTTT and p(g2T-TT)) with submonomer resolution. Molecular dynamics simulations of the same surface-adsorbed polymers exhibit an excellent agreement with the experimental images, allowing us to extend the characterization of the polymers to the atomic scale. Our results prove that, similarly to their alkylated counterparts, glycolated polymers assemble through interdigitation of their side chains, although significant differences are found in their conformation and interaction patterns. A model is proposed that identifies the driving force for the polymer assembly in the tendency of the side chains to adopt the conformation of their free analogues, i.e., polyethylene and polyethylene glycol, for alkyl or ethylene glycol side chains, respectively. For both classes of polymers, it is also demonstrated that the backbone conformation is determined to a higher degree by the interaction between the side chains rather than by the backbone torsional potential energy. The generalization of these findings from two-dimensional (2D) monolayers to three-dimensional thin films is discussed, together with the opportunity to use this type of 2D study to gain so far inaccessible, subnm-scale information on the microstructure of conjugated polymers.

Exchanging hydrophobic alkyl-based side chains to hydrophilic glycol-based side chains is a widely adopted method for improving mixed-transport device performance, despite the impact on solid state packing and polymer-electrolyte interactions being poorly understood. Presented here is a Molecular Dynamics (MD) force field for modelling alkoxylated and glycolated polythiophenes. The force field is validated against known packing motifs for their monomer crystals. MD simulations, coupled with X-ray Diffraction (XRD), show that alkoxylated polythiophenes will pack with a `tilted stack' and straight interdigitating side chains, whilst their glycolated counterpart will pack with a `deflected stack' and an s-bend side chain configuration. MD simulations reveal water penetration pathways into the alkoxylated and glycolated crystals - through the {\pi}-stack and through the lamellar stack respectively. Finally, the two distinct ways tri-ethylene glycol polymers can bind to cations are revealed, showing the formation of a meta-stable single bound state, or an energetically deep double bound state, both with a strong side chain length dependance. The minimum energy pathways for the formation of the chelates are identified, showing the physical process through which cations can bind to one or two side chains of a glycolated polythiophene, with consequences for ion transport in bithiophene semiconductors., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Semiconducting polymers with oligoethylene glycol sidechains have attracted strong research interest for organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) applications. However, key molecular design rules for high-performance OECTs via efficient mixed electronic/ionic charge transport are still unclear. Herein, we synthesize and characterize new glycolated copolymers (gDPP-TTT and gDPP-TTVTT) with diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) acceptor and thiophene-based (TTT or TTVTT) donor units for accumulation mode OECTs, where a long-alkyl-group (C12 ) attached to DPP unit acts as a spacer distancing the oligoethylene glycol from the polymer backbone. gDPP-TTVTT shows the highest OECT transconductance (61.9 S cm-1 ) and high operational stability, compared to gDPP-TTT and their alkylated counterparts. Surprisingly, gDPP-TTVTT also shows high electronic charge mobility in field-effect transistor, suggesting efficient ion injection/diffusion without hindering its efficient electronic charge transport. The elongated donor unit (TTVTT) facilitates the hole polaron formation more localized to the donor unit, leading to faster and easier polaron formation with less impact on polymer structure during OECT operation, as opposed to the TTT unit. This is supported by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. We conclude that these simultaneously high electronic and ionic charge transport properties are achieved due to the long-alkyl-group spacer in amphipathic sidechains, providing an important molecular design rule for glycolated copolymers. Polarons, that is, charge carriers correlated with lattice deformations, are ubiquitous quasiparticles in semiconductors, and play an important role in electrical conductivity. To date most theoretical studies of so-called large polarons, in which the lattice can be considered as a continuum, have focused on the original Fr\"ohlich model: a simple (non-degenerate) parabolic isotropic electronic band coupled to one dispersionless longitudinal optical phonon branch. The Fr\"ohlich model allows one to understand characteristics such as polaron formation energy, radius, effective mass and mobility. Real cubic materials, instead, have electronic band extrema that are often degenerate or anisotropic and present several phonon modes. In the present work, we address such issues. We keep the continuum hypothesis inherent to the large polaron Fr\"ohlich model, but waive the isotropic and non-degeneracy hypotheses, and also include multiple phonon branches. For polaron effective masses, working at the lowest order of perturbation theory, we provide analytical results for the case of anisotropic electronic energy dispersion, with two distinct effective masses (uniaxial) and numerical simulations for the degenerate 3-band case, typical of III-V and II-VI semiconductor valence bands. We also deal with the strong-coupling limit, using a variational treatment: we propose trial wavefunctions for the above-mentioned cases, providing polaron radii and energies. Improvement in the optoelectronic performance of halide perovskite semiconductors requires the identification and suppression of nonradiative carrier trapping processes. The iodine interstitial has been established as a deep level defect and implicated as an active recombination center. We analyze the quantum mechanics of carrier trapping. Fast and irreversible electron capture by the neutral iodine interstitial is found. The effective Huang-Rhys factor exceeds 300, indicative of the strong electron-phonon coupling that is possible in soft semiconductors. The accepting phonon mode has a frequency of 53 cm-1 and has an associated electron capture coefficient of 1 × 10-10 cm3 s-1. The inverse participation ratio is used to quantify the localization of phonon modes associated with the transition. We infer that suppression of octahedral rotations is an important factor to enhance defect tolerance.

The behavior of hot carriers in metal-halide perovskites (MHPs) present a valuable foundation for understanding the details of carrier-phonon coupling in the materials as well as the prospective development of highly efficient hot carrier and carrier multiplication solar cells. Whilst the carrier population dynamics during cooling have been intensely studied, the evolution of the hot carrier properties, namely the hot carrier mobility, remain largely unexplored. To address this, we introduce a novel ultrafast visible pump - infrared push - terahertz probe spectroscopy (PPP-THz) to monitor the real-time conductivity dynamics of cooling carriers in methylammonium lead iodide. We find a decrease in mobility upon optically depositing energy into the carriers, which is typical of band-transport. Surprisingly, the conductivity recovery dynamics are incommensurate with the intraband relaxation measured by an analogous experiment with an infrared probe (PPP- IR), and exhibit a negligible dependence on the density of hot carriers. These results and the kinetic modelling reveal the importance of highly-localized lattice heating on the mobility of the hot electronic states. The fundamental gap of hybrid lead halide perovskites decreases linearly with decreasing temperature at ambient conditions. Using MAPbI3 (MA, methylammonium) as example, I will show that this atypical gap renormalization with temperature is due to an equal footing of thermal expansion and electron-phonon interaction effects. I will also present recent results obtained for FAxMA1-xPbI3 solid solutions (FA, formamidinium). Strikingly, the temperature dependence of the gap of a phase stable at intermediate compositions and below ca. 250 K exhibits a quadratic bowing with temperature. Band-structure and lattice-dynamics calculations provide crucial insights into this intriguing temperature behavior of the gap.

Kesterite-structured Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) is an earth-abundant and non-toxic semiconductor that is being studied for use as the absorber layer in thin-film solar cells. Currently, the power-conversion efficiencies of this technology fall short of the requirements for commercialisation. Disorder in the Cu–Zn sub-lattice has been observed and is proposed as one explanation for the shortcomings of CZTS solar cells. Cation site disorder averaged over a macroscopic sample does not provide insights into the microscopic cation distribution that will interact with photogenerated electrons and holes. To provide atomistic insight into Cu/Zn disorder, we have developed a Monte Carlo (MC) model based on pairwise electrostatic interactions. Substitutional disorder amongst Cu and Zn ions in Cu–Zn (001) planes on the 2c and 2d Wyckoff sites – 2D disorder – has been proposed as the dominant form of Cu/Zn disorder in near-stoichiometric crystals. We use our model to study the Cu/Zn order–disorder transition in 2D but also allow Zn to substitute onto the Cu 2a site – 3D disorder – including Cu–Sn (001) planes. We find that defects are less concentrated in Cu–Sn (001) planes but that Zn ions readily substitute onto the Cu 2a site and that the critical temperature is lowered for 3D disorder.

Metal oxides can act as insulators, semiconductors or metals depending on their chemical composition and crystal structure. Metal oxide semiconductors, which support equilibrium populations of electron and hole charge carriers, have widespread applications including batteries, solar cells, and display technologies. It is often difficult to predict in advance whether these materials will exhibit localized or delocalized charge carriers upon oxidation or reduction. We combine data from first-principles calculations of the electronic structure and dielectric response of 214 metal oxides to predict the energetic driving force for carrier localization and transport. We assess descriptors based on the carrier effective mass, static polaron binding energy, and Frohlich electron–phonon coupling. Numerical analysis allows us to assign p and n type transport of a metal oxide to three classes: (i) band transport with high mobility; (ii) small polaron transport with low mobility; and (iii) intermediate behaviour. The results of this classification agree with observations regarding carrier dynamics and lifetimes and are used to predict 10 candidate p-type oxides.

Three-dimensional lead-halide perovskites have attracted a lot of attention due to their ability to combine solution processing with outstanding optoelectronic properties. Despite their soft ionic nature these materials demonstrate a surprisingly low level of electronic disorder resulting in sharp band edges and narrow distributions of the electronic energies. Understanding how structural and dynamic disorder impacts the optoelectronic properties of these perovskites is important for many applications. Here we combine ultrafast two-dimensional vibrational spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations to study the dynamics of the organic inethylammonium (MA) cation orientation in a range of pure and mixed trihalide perovskite materials. For pure MAPbX(3) (X = I, Br, Cl) perovskite films, we observe that the cation dynamics accelerate with decreasing size of the halide atom. This acceleration is surprising given the expected strengthening of the hydrogen bonds between the MA and the smaller halide anions, hut can be explained by the increase in the polarizability with the size of halide. Much slower dynamics, up to partial immobilization of the organic cation, are observed in the mixed MAPb(ClxBr1-x)(3) and MAPb(BrxI1-x)(3) alloys; which we associate with symmetry breaking within the perovskite unit cell. The observed dynamics are essential for understanding the effects of structural and dynamical disorder in perovskite-based optoelectronic systems.

Lead halide perovskites such as methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPI) have outstanding optical and electronic properties for photovoltaic applications, yet a full understanding of how this solution processable material works so well is currently missing. Previous research has revealed that MAPI possesses multiple forms of static disorder regardless of preparation method, which is surprising in light of its excellent performance. Using high energy resolution inelastic X-ray (HERIX) scattering, we measure phonon dispersions in MAPI and find direct evidence for another form of disorder in single crystals: large amplitude anharmonic zone-edge rotational instabilities of the PbI_6 octahedra that persist to room temperature and above, left over from structural phase transitions that take place tens to hundreds of degrees below. Phonon calculations show that the orientations of the methylammonium couple strongly and cooperatively to these modes. The result is a non-centrosymmetric, instantaneous local structure, which we observe in atomic pair distribution function (PDF) measurements. This local symmetry breaking is unobservable by Bragg diffraction, but can explain key material properties such as the structural phase sequence, ultra low thermal transport, and large minority charge carrier lifetimes despite moderate carrier mobility., 30 pages, 11 figures

Summary Forming a four-component compound from the first 103 elements of the periodic table results in more than 1012 combinations. Such a materials space is intractable to high-throughput experiment or first-principle computation. We introduce a framework to address this problem and quantify how many materials can exist. We apply principles of valency and electronegativity to filter chemically implausible compositions, which reduces the inorganic quaternary space to 1010 combinations. We demonstrate that estimates of band gaps and absolute electron energies can be made simply on the basis of the chemical composition and apply this to the search for new semiconducting materials to support the photoelectrochemical splitting of water. We show the applicability to predicting crystal structure by analogy with known compounds, including exploration of the phase space for ternary combinations that form a perovskite lattice. Computer screening reproduces known perovskite materials and predicts the feasibility of thousands more. There is a concerted global effort to reduce the time it takes to realize new materials via databases, high-throughput screening, informatics, and mapping out the “materials genome.” Here, we show how the compositional space for stoichiometric, inorganic materials can be quantified by simple rules and how the vast space can be explored quickly and cheaply with the use of key chemical concepts and element properties in the search for candidate materials with target properties. We exemplify the application of this approach by identifying a chalcohalide material with potential for water-splitting applications and carrying out a comprehensive search for new compositions that could adopt the widely studied perovskite crystal structure., The compositional space for inorganic materials remains vastly unexplored. Walsh and colleagues have designed procedures that use well-established chemical knowledge to quantify the number of possible multi-component compounds. They show how chemical filters can be applied to quickly and effectively narrow down the number of results and focus on those with target functionality.

For semiconductors used in photovoltaic devices, the effective mass approximation allows calculation of important material properties from first-principles calculations, including optical properties (e.g. exciton binding energies), defect properties (e.g. donor and acceptor levels) and transport properties (e.g. carrier mobilities). The conduction and valence bands of semiconductors are commonly approximated as parabolic around their extrema, which gives a simple theoretical description, but ignores the complexity of real materials. In this work, we use density functional theory to assess the impact of band non-parabolicity on four common thin-film photovoltaic materials - GaAs, CdTe, Cu$_2$ZnSnS$_4$ and CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ - at temperatures and carrier densities relevant for real-world applications. First, we calculate the effective mass at the band edges. We compare finite-difference, unweighted least-squares and thermally weighted least-squares approaches. We find that the thermally weighted least-squares method reduces sensitivity to the choice of sampling density. Second, we employ a Kane quasi-linear dispersion to quantify the extent of non-parabolicity, and compare results from different electronic structure theories to consider the effect of spin-orbit coupling and electron exchange. Finally, we focus on the halide perovskite CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ as a model system to assess the impact of non-parabolicity on calculated electron transport and optical properties at high carrier concentrations. We find that at a concentration of 10$^{20}$ cm$^-3$ the optical effective mass increases by a factor of two relative to the low carrier-concentration value, and the polaron mobility decreases by a factor of three. The dynamics of organic cations in metal halide hybrid perovskites (MHPs) have been investigated using numerous experimental and computational techniques because of their suspected effects on the properties of MHPs. In this Perspective, we summarize and reconcile key findings and present new data to synthesize a unified understanding of the dynamics of the cations. We conclude that theory and experiment collectively paint a relatively complete picture of rotational dynamics within MHPs. This picture is then used to discuss the consequences of structural dynamics for electron-phonon interactions and their effect on material properties by providing a brief account of key studies that correlate cation dynamics with the dynamics of the inorganic sublattice and overall device properties.

Disorder in the Cu-Zn sub-lattice has been observed and is proposed as one possible explanation for the shortcomings of CZTS solar cells. Cation site disorder averaged over a macroscopic sample does not provide insights into the microscopic cation distribution that will interact with photogenerated electrons and holes. To provideatomistic insight into Cu-Zn disorder we have developed a Monte Carlo (MC) model based on pairwise interactions. We utilise two order parameters to relate Cu-Zn disorder to the processing temperature for stoichiometric systems: one based on cation site occupancies (the Q order parameter) and the other based on cation pair-correlation functions. Our model predicts that the order parameters reach a plateau at experimentally relevant low temperatures, indicating that Cu-Zn order in stoichiometric CZTS is thermodynamically limited. Around room temperature, we predict a minimum of 10% disorder in the cation site occupancywithin (001) Cu-Zn planes.

We present the synthesis and characterization of a series of encapsulated diketopyrrolopyrrole red-emitting conjugated polymers. The novel materials display extremely high fluorescence quantum yields in both solution (>70%) and thin film (>20%). Both the absorption and emission spectra show clearer, more defined features compared to their naked counterparts demonstrating the suppression of inter and intramolecular aggregation. We find that the encapsulation results in decreased energetic disorder and a dramatic increase in backbone colinearity as evidenced by scanning tunnelling microscopy. This study paves the way for diketopyrrolopyrrole to be used in emissive solid state applications and demonstrates a novel method to reduce structural disorder in conjugated polymers.

The rapid relaxation of above-band-gap “hot” carriers (HCs) imposes the key efficiency limit in lead-halide perovskite (LHP) solar cells. Recent studies have indicated that HC cooling in these systems may be sensitive to materials composition, as well as the energy and density of excited states. However, the key parameters underpinning the cooling mechanism are currently under debate. Here we use a sequence of ultrafast optical pulses (visible pump–infrared push–infrared probe) to directly compare the intraband cooling dynamics in five common LHPs: FAPbI3, FAPbBr3, MAPbI3, MAPbBr3, and CsPbBr3. We observe ∼100–900 fs cooling times, with slower cooling at higher HC densities. This effect is strongest in the all-inorganic Cs-based system, compared to the hybrid analogues with organic cations. These observations, together with band structure calculations, allow us to quantify the origin of the “hot-phonon bottleneck” in LHPs and assert the thermodynamic contribution of a symmetry-breaking organic cation toward rapid HC cooling.

Fullerene multi-adducts offer a method to tune the open-circuit voltage of organic solar cells but generally lead to poor photocurrent generation which has been linked to poor electron transport in the fullerenes. The poor electron transport may result from the effect of multiple side chains in hindering close packing of the fullerene cages or from disorder in energy levels due to the presence of multiple isomers. Here, we present time-of-flight and field-effect transistor measurements of mobility in [6,6]-phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and its higher adducts. To understand the origin of the poor electron mobility, we develop a coarse-grained molecular dynamics model to build isomeric mixes of the multi-adducts. The coarse grained model massively speeds up the simulation relative to atomistic molecular dynamics, enabling assemblies of 100 000 molecules to be studied. We simulate electron transport in the structures using a kinetic Monte Carlo method, accounting for variations in site energy using electronic structure calculations. This allows us to separate the influence of packing disorder (poorer contact between fullerenes due to steric hindrance) from the influence of energetic disorder (due to varying acceptor energies of the isomers) on electron mobility. We find that energetic disorder due to different isomers dominates the trend in charge transport. Consequently, pure isomeric samples of higher fullerene adducts should enable higher efficiency solar cells.

The local crystal structures of many perovskite-structured materials deviate from the average space-group symmetry. We demonstrate, from lattice-dynamics calculations based on quantum chemical force constants, that all of the cesium-lead and cesium-tin halide perovskites exhibit vibrational instabilities associated with octahedral titling in their high-temperature cubic phase. Anharmonic double-well potentials are found for zone-boundary phonon modes in all compounds with barriers ranging from 108 to 512 meV. The well depth is correlated with the tolerance factor and the chemistry of the composition, but is not proportional to the imaginary harmonic phonon frequency. We provide quantitative insights into the thermodynamic driving forces and distinguish between dynamic and static disorder based on the potential-energy landscape. A positive band gap deformation (spectral blue shift) accompanies the structural distortion, with implications for understanding the performance of these materials in applications areas including solar cells and light-emitting diodes.

Halide perovskites show unusual thermalisation kinetics for above bandgap photo-excitation. We explain this as a consequence of excess energy being deposited into discrete large polaron states. The cross-over between low-fluence and high-fluence `phonon bottleneck' cooling is due to a Mott transition where the polarons overlap ($n \ge 10^{18}/\mathrm{cm}^3$) and the phonon sub-populations are shared. We calculate the initial rate of cooling (thermalisation) from the scattering time in the Fr\"ohlich polaron model to be 78 meVps$^{-1}$ for $\mathrm{CH}_3\mathrm{NH}_3\mathrm{PbI}_3$. This rapid initial thermalisation involves heat transfer into optical phonon modes coupled by a polar dielectric interaction. Chiral molecules exist as pairs of nonsuperimposable mirror images; a fundamental symmetry property vastly underexplored in organic electronic devices. Here, we show that organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) made from the helically chiral molecule 1-aza[6]helicene can display up to an 80-fold difference in hole mobility, together with differences in thin-film photophysics and morphology, solely depending on whether a single handedness or a 1:1 mixture of left- and right-handed molecules is employed under analogous fabrication conditions. As the molecular properties of either mirror image isomer are identical, these changes must be a result of the different bulk packing induced by chiral composition. Such underlying structures are investigated using crystal structure prediction, a computational methodology rarely applied to molecular materials, and linked to the difference in charge transport. These results illustrate that chirality may be used as a key tuning parameter in future device applications.

Organic-inorganic halide perovskites present a number of challenges for first-principles atomistic materials modeling. Such “plastic crystals” feature dynamic processes across multiple length and time scales. These include the following: (i) transport of slow ions and fast electrons; (ii) highly anharmonic lattice dynamics with short phonon lifetimes; (iii) local symmetry breaking of the average crystallographic space group; (iv) strong relativistic (spin-orbit coupling) effects on the electronic band structure; and (v) thermodynamic metastability and rapid chemical breakdown. These issues, which affect the operation of solar cells, are outlined in this perspective. We also discuss general guidelines for performing quantitative and predictive simulations of these materials, which are relevant to metal-organic frameworks and other hybrid semiconducting, dielectric and ferroelectric compounds.

The presence of energetically low-lying triplet states is a hallmark of organic semiconductors. Even though they present a wealth of interesting photophysical properties, these optically dark states significantly limit optoelectronic device performance. Recent advances in emissive charge-transfer molecules have pioneered routes to reduce the energy gap between triplets and "bright" singlets, allowing thermal population exchange between them and eliminating a significant loss channel in devices. In conjugated polymers, this gap has proved resistant to modification. Here, we introduce a general approach to reduce the singlet-triplet energy gap in fully conjugated polymers, using a donor-orthogonal acceptor motif to spatially separate electron and hole wave functions. This new generation of conjugated polymers allows for a greatly reduced exchange energy, enhancing triplet formation and enabling thermally activated delayed fluorescence. We find that the mechanisms of both processes are driven by excited-state mixing between π-π*and charge-transfer states, affording new insight into reverse intersystem crossing.

Charge transfer (CT) state properties at the donor:acceptor interface in organic photovoltaic materials are widely regarded as crucial in determining the charge separation efficiency of organic photovoltaic devices. In this work, we use time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) with B3LYP/6-31g* to study the influence of chemical structure on excitation energies, oscillator strengths, and electronic structure. We vertically excite states in a series of polymer:fullerene blends, modeling each blend as an oligomer:fullerene pair in vacuo. Our method reproduces experimentally observed trends in CT state energy with chemical structure as measured by electroluminescence. For oligothiophene:PCBM (PCBM = [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester), we find that Coulomb binding tends to reduce in higher excited CT states. In the case of several isoindigo and diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) based donors, we find that the first excited state of the pair lies close in energy to the first singlet of the oligomers, ...

We use grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) and molecular modeling to understand the difference in crystallization of several cyclopentadithiophene–benzothiadiazole polymer derivatives. We observe using GIWAXS that when the carbon bridging atom is substituted by a silicon atom, the π–π stacking distance is decreased while the lamellar stacking distance is increased. Using molecular modeling, we calculate the potential energy surfaces of an ordered array of oligomers as a function of π–π stacking and lamellar stacking distances and find two local minima for both the carbon and silicon analogues. This finding is consistent with the GIWAXS observations. We suggest that it may be possible to crystallize the carbon and silicon versions in the same crystal structure by varying the processing conditions. The local crystal structures of many perovskite-structured materials deviate from the average space-group symmetry. We demonstrate, from lattice-dynamics calculations based on quantum chemical force constants, that all of the cesium–lead and cesium–tin halide perovskites exhibit vibrational instabilities associated with octahedral titling in their high-temperature cubic phase. Anharmonic double-well potentials are found for zone-boundary phonon modes in all compounds with barriers ranging from 108 to 512 meV. The well depth is correlated with the tolerance factor and the chemistry of the composition, but is not proportional to the imaginary harmonic phonon frequency. We provide quantitative insights into the thermodynamic driving forces and distinguish between dynamic and static disorder based on the potential-energy landscape. A positive band gap deformation (spectral blue shift) accompanies the structural distortion, with implications for understanding the performance of these materials in applications areas including solar cells and light-emitting diodes.

Two novel indacenodithiophene (IDT) based donor–acceptor conjugated polymers for use in organic field effect transistors and photovoltaic devices are synthesized and characterized. The effect of inclusion of two fluorine atoms on the acceptor portion of the polymer is thoroughly investigated via a range of techniques. The inductively withdrawing and mesomerically donating properties of the fluorine atoms result in a decrease of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), with little effect on the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) as demonstrated through density functional theory (DFT) analysis. Inclusion of fluorine atoms also leads to a potentially more planar backbone through inter and intrachain interactions. Use of the novel materials in organic field effect transistor (OFET) and organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices leads to high mobilities around 0.1 cm2/(V s) and solar cell efficiencies around 4.5%.

Data to accompany the article "Phonon anharmonicity, lifetimes, and thermal transport in CH3NH3PbI3 from many-body perturbation theory". The data includes a set of input files for the Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package (VASP) electronic-structure code, together with input and output files for the Phonopy and Phono3py packages used to set up and post-process the lattice-dynamics calculations.

The modelling of materials properties and processes from first principles is becoming sufficiently accurate as to facilitate the design and testing of new systems in silico. Computational materials science is both valuable and increasingly necessary for developing novel functional materials and composites that meet the requirements of next-generation technology. A range of simulation techniques are being developed and applied to problems related to materials for energy generation, storage and conversion including solar cells, nuclear reactors, batteries, fuel cells, and catalytic systems. Such techniques may combine crystal-structure prediction (global optimisation), data mining (materials informatics) and high-throughput screening with elements of machine learning. We explore the development process associated with computational materials design, from setting the requirements and descriptors to the development and testing of new materials. As a case study, we critically review progress in the fields of thermoelectrics and photovoltaics, including the simulation of lattice thermal conductivity and the search for Pb-free hybrid halide perovskites. Finally, a number of universal chemical-design principles are advanced.

The family of soluble fullerene derivatives comprises a widely studied group of electron transporting molecules for use in organic electronic and optoelectronic devices. For electronic applications, electron transporting (n-channel) materials are required for implementation into organic complementary logic circuit architectures. To date, few soluble candidate materials have been studied that fulfill the stringent requirements of high carrier mobility and air stability. Here we present a study of three soluble fullerenes with varying electron affinity to assess the impact of electronic structure on device performance and air stability. Through theoretical and experimental analysis of the electronic structure, characterization of thin-film structure, and characterization of transistor device properties we find that the air stability of the present series of fullerenes not only depends on the absolute electron affinity of the semiconductor but also on the disorder within the thin-film. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

Leguy, Aurélien M. A. et al., We present Raman and terahertz absorbance spectra of methylammonium lead halide single crystals (MAPbX3, X = I, Br, Cl) at temperatures between 80 and 370 K. These results show good agreement with density-functional-theory phonon calculations.1 Comparison of experimental spectra and calculated vibrational modes enables confident assignment of most of the vibrational features between 50 and 3500 cm-1. Reorientation of the methylammonium cations, unlocked in their cavities at the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition, plays a key role in shaping the vibrational spectra of the different compounds. Calculations show that these dynamics effects split Raman peaks and create more structure than predicted from the independent harmonic modes. This explains the presence of extra peaks in the experimental spectra that have been a source of confusion in earlier studies. We discuss singular features, in particular the torsional vibration of the C-N axis, which is the only molecular mode that is strongly influenced by the size of the lattice. We present a model of polycrystalline C60 field-effect transistors (FETs) that incorporates the microscopic structural and electronic details of the C60 films. We generate disordered polycrystalline thin films by simulating the physical-vapor deposition process. We simulate electron hopping transport using a Monte Carlo method and electronic structure calculations. Our model reproduces experimentally observed FET characteristics, including electrical characteristics, electrochemical potentials, and charge mobilities. Our results suggest that even relatively disordered films have charge mobilities that are only a factor of 2 smaller than mobilities in single crystals.

We calculate the effect of vibronic coupling on the charge transport parameters in crystalline naphthalene, between 0 and 400 K. We find that nuclear fluctuations can cause large changes in both the energy of a charge on a molecule and on the electronic coupling between molecules. As a result, nuclear fluctuations cause wide distributions of both energies and couplings. We show that these distributions have a small temperature dependence and that, even at high temperatures, vibronic coupling is dominated by the effect of zero-point fluctuations. Because of the importance of zero-point fluctuations, we find that the distributions of energies and couplings have substantial width, even at 0 K. Furthermore, vibronic coupling with high energy modes may be significant, even though these modes are never thermally activated. Our results have implications for the temperature dependence of charge mobilities in organic semiconductors.

Hybrid halide perovskites are semiconductors with a twist. Their structures are highly dynamic with disorder occurring across a range of length and time scales. Herein, we discuss the atomic processes that underpin this behaviour and how they are linked to photovoltaic performance.

We present a theoretical study of charge transport in disordered semiconducting polymers that relates the charge mobility to the chemical structure and the physical morphology in a novel multiscale approach. Our studies, focusing on poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO), show that the charge mobility is dominated by pathways with the highest interchain charge-transfer rates. We also find that disorder is not always detrimental to charge transport. We find good agreement with experimental time-of-flight mobility data in highly aligned PFO films.

The parameters controlling the kinetics of intermolecular charge transfer are traditionally estimated from electronic structure calculations on the charge donor and charge acceptor in isolation. Here, we show that this procedure results in inaccuracies for hole transfer between a pair of organic dye molecules by comparing charge-constrained density functional theory (DFT) calculations on a dye cation/neutral dye pair to the conventional DFT calculations on the isolated molecules. We quantify the error made in the reorganization energy of hole exchange between dye molecules (λi). We choose three indolene-based organic dyes with application to dye-sensitized solar cells, namely, D149, D102, and D131, for which experimental values of λ are available. We find that, although highly system dependent, the intermolecular interaction between the charge donor and acceptor can lead to a 0.25 eV change in λi, illustrating the limitations of the widely used original method in predicting the rate of charge transfer.

Organic–inorganic metal halide perovskites have demonstrated high power conversion efficiencies in solar cells and promising performance in a wide range of optoelectronic devices. The existence and stability of bound electron–hole pairs in these materials and their role in the operation of devices with different architectures remains a controversial issue. Here we demonstrate, through a combination of optical spectroscopy and multiscale modelling as a function of the degree of polycrystallinity and temperature, that the electron–hole interaction is sensitive to the microstructure of the material. The long-range order is disrupted by polycrystalline disorder and the variations in electrostatic potential found for smaller crystals suppress exciton formation, while larger crystals of the same composition demonstrate an unambiguous excitonic state. We conclude that fabrication procedures and morphology strongly influence perovskite behaviour, with both free carrier and excitonic regimes possible, with strong implications for optoelectronic devices.
