Tremendous development in intelligent wearable gadgets creates opportunities for flexible strain sensors. Comfortable and safe flexible strain sensors have high demand in wearable applications and therefore the textile-based strain sensors are desired. Achieving attributes like easy fabrication, cost-effectiveness, high sensitivity, good stability, and portability is still a challenge to overcome. In this regard, textile-based flexible strain sensors, one on jeans fabric and other on cotton fabric, are presented. A conventional interdigitated electrode structure is adopted and sensors are prepared by facile and economical fabrication process. Both sensors own high sensitivity factors, i.e., gauge factor >200 and stability of >10 000 cycles. The anticipated works show a linear response R² = 0.99, low hysteresis <5%, and minimum resolution <7°. The intended sensors are implemented for real-time application, i.e., the physiotherapy of the knee and neck. The jeans-fabric-based sensor is used for knee therapy and the cotton for neck. The daily therapy sessions are recorded and examined. The sensors respond well to the applied strain during therapy sessions, proving to be an outstanding choice for integration into biomedical wearable devices for therapeutic purposes. Increased global consumption of water, wastewater discharges and municipal solid waste creation have had negative environmental consequences. Sustainable strategies for wastewater treatment including bioremediation approaches are investigated for the treatment of wastewater. The advantages of using microalgae for this purpose are twofold: one, they significantly remove/recycle the nutrients and secondly, generate useful biomass which can subsequently be used for biofuel production. Increased global warming, depletion of fossil fuels resources has highlighted the importance of microalgae as potential sources for biomass generation. The current study investigates the use of immobilised microalgae (Desmodesmus subspicatus) as an alternative approach for wastewater treatment and to avoid the loss of biomass. This study explains the efficiency of an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) tank, wetland tank, and immobilised algal cells in nutrient uptake, carbon compounds utilisation, metals, and biological organisms' removal from sewage wastewater. The study also focuses on the use of algal biomass for lipid production. Results showed that maximum significant nitrogen and phosphorus uptake was observed after immobilised cells treatment (84% and 86% respectively). Maximum carbon compounds utilisation in the form of alkalinity, carbonates, bicarbonates, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) was calculated at day 12 (58%, 59%, 62%, 87% and 52% respectively). Results showed that maximum reduction in metal ions and biological organism of sewage wastewater were attained after treating with immobilised cells. At effluent of sewage water, algal cell production was 13.57 × 106 cells/ml using sewage water as media, and lipid content was 20.31%. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopic analysis of lipid revealed that they had compounds that play important role in biofuel production. Immobilised D. subspicatus can be efficiently utilised to simultaneously treat sewage wastewater as well as in the production of biofuel by using algal biomass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of exogenous enzyme supplementation and solid-state fermentation (SSF) with a mixed bacterial culture on in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and short chain fatty acid (SCFA) production of soybean meal (SBM) or rapeseed meal (RSM). A 2 × 2 factorial design was used and included the factors of 1) exogenous enzyme cocktail (supplemented and non-supplemented), 2) microbial fermentation (fermented and non-fermented) applied to SBM or RSM in vitro. The exogenous enzyme cocktail consisted of non-starch polysaccharide (NSP) degrading enzymes (NSP-EZ) with phytase (10,000 FTU/kg), and the SSF were carried out using Bacillus subtilis. The fermented feed ingredients were collected after 48 h incubation at 37oC. Samples were hydrolyzed in two steps using pepsin and pancreatin to calculate IVDMD. Subsequently, the hydrolyzed residues were filtered, dried, and pooled for incubation in a buffered mineral solution with fresh swine feces. Gas production kinetics during fermentation was measured for 72 h and analyzed by fitting data to an exponential model. The fermentation residues were filtered, and the supernatant was analyzed for concentration of SCFA. The IVDMD from simulated gastric and small intestinal hydrolysis was greater (P < 0.01) for SSF in both SBM and RSM. During fermentation, the hydrolysis residue from SBM treated with SSF required less time to reach half asymptote, had greater maximal gas production, and greater fractional degradation (P < 0.01, respectively) compared with non-fermented SBM. The IVDMD from simulated total tract digestion was greater (P < 0.01) for SSF in RSM compared with SBM, while SBM had greater IVDMD for both SSF and NSP-EZ (P < 0.01). Production of butyric acid was greater for SSF (P < 0.01) compared with non-SSF in both SBM and RSM. These results suggest that SSF can improve IVDMD and produce greater amounts of butyric acid compared with NSP-EZ supplementation in SBM and RSM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Ramadan is a holy month and the majority of Muslims fast in it, without considering background illnesses. SGLT-2 drugs were available for Pakistani patients recently, and this was the first year to fast in their presence. Objectives: To assess the risk of hypoglycemia in fasting diabetics using SGLT-2 drugs, comparing it with Sulphonylurea (SU) drugs. Also, a change in HbA1c and eGFR was checked. Hence, evidence was collected to recommend their use in fasting Diabetics with safety. Material and Methods: A total of 5500 patients from three different sites were included. Only 500 fulfilled the criteria of inclusion. Pregnant, lactating, advanced Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), and those recording hypoglycemia frequently were not included. Ages between 20 to 70 years, HbA1c between 7 to 11, and patients taking SU or SGLT-2 were included. Conclusion: The eGFR was comparable in both groups post-Ramadan. HbA1c was significantly reduced in the SGLT-2 group. Bitter taste and thirst were common with the SU group. Hypoglycemia was comparable in both groups.
