This study aims to assess the impact of occlusal loadings on peri-implant bone loss by measuring the cantilever of each implant and evaluating the occlusal pattern using PRESCALE® and to examine the relationship between occlusal overload and peri-implant bone loss, including marginal bone loss (MBL) and biomechanical factors, in a sample of 41 patients with a total of 135 implants. In addition, this study examines the influence of occlusal overload among patient groups with no marginal bone loss, unilateral bone loss, and bilateral bone loss. The PRESCALE® quantifies the occlusal area and load along the dental arch. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for comparing quantitative variables between groups and the Pearson correlation coefficient (r) was applied to analyze linear relationships between quantitative variables. The results of occlusal distribution and pressure range were presented using the PRESCALE®. It was found that the mesial cantilever was statistically significantly greater (p < 0.05) for the bilateral bone loss group. Additionally, MBL was significantly proportional to occlusal loading in the left anterior sector (r = 0.47; p < 0.01) and to follow-up time (r = 0.29; p < 0.01), though it was also proportional to implant diameter and length (r = 0.27 and r = 0.20). The presence of a wider cantilever and excess occlusal loading appears to be associated with increased bone loss.

Background: This study aimed to characterize dentistry, medicine and pharmacy students in terms of emotional intelligence (EI) and personality traits (PTs). It also sought to identify whether differences existed according to gender and degree program and the relationship between them. Methods: Students enrolled in dentistry (115), medicine (85) and pharmacy (57) degree programs participated voluntarily in the research, including 59 men and 198 women. The following questionnaires were used: (1) the Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS-24) to evaluate EI; (2) the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) to assess PT. The Qualtrics XM platform was used for data collection. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between three components of EI, either according to gender or degree program. The only difference in PTs was found in neuroticism, where women scored higher than men. There were statistically significant differences between students on different degree programs in openness to experience and responsibility. The five PTs correlated significantly with the three components of EI, except responsibility and emotional attention. The strongest associations were found between neuroticism and emotional repair (−0.439). Conclusions: High percentages of the student population were observed to have weaknesses in emotional clarity and emotional repair. Neuroticism is a personality trait that seems to occur more frequently in women.

Abstract Background Different processing techniques are employed to obtain poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with consistent surface quality in terms of topography and tribological function. The purpose of this research is to evaluate its influence on the surface height distribution. Methods In this research, samples of conventional and CAD/CAM acrylic resins were prepared. The following surface roughness parameters were extracted from the profilometric readings: arithmetic mean roughness (Pa), skewness (Psk) and kurtosis (Pku). Due to their lack of periodontal ligaments (PLs) and the differences between dental implants and natural teeth, it is necessary to improve and generate a new occlusal scheme to prolong the life of implants and prostheses. The age and the sex of patients must be considered because of their effects on the stomatognathic system’s physiology. Operators must manage all the changes to obtain good sensations during mastication and a better occlusal scheme for implanting fixed partial prostheses. Dentists should try to protect this type of prosthesis using adjacent teeth and the PL. This is why new digital systems were created. The combination of T-Scan® (digital software for occlusal analysis) and electromyography (EMG) could allow doctors to find areas where it is necessary to act and to find suitable solutions for the problems generated by using conventional methods of occlusal analysis (such as articulating paper). In this study, a new method for establishing occlusion on fixed partial implant prostheses has been created, combining digital systems with conventional articulating paper. This method consists of asking the patient to bite down with different forces and situations in an attempt to achieve Implant-Protected Occlusion (IPO). The use of digital systems has been shown to be more effective than using only conventional systems. This new method allows a safer mode of occlusion which protects implants and prostheses, saving all the differences between them and natural teeth, and increasing the satisfaction of patients. This method also helps to overcome the changes in the stomatognathic system as age increases, adjusting the occlusion to changes in PLs with age.

Abstract Background Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) is one of the most prevalent viruses affecting melon worldwide. Recessive resistance to WMV in melon has previously been reported in the African accession TGR-1551. Moreover, the genomic regions associated to the resistance have also been described. Nevertheless, the transcriptomic response that might infer the resistance to this potyvirus has not been explored. Results We have performed a comparative transcriptomic analysis using mock and WMV-inoculated plants of the susceptible cultivar “Bola de oro” (BO) and a resistant RIL (Recombinant inbred line) derived from the initial cross between “TGR-1551” and BO. In total, 616 genes were identified as differentially expressed and the weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) detected 19 gene clusters (GCs), of which 7 were differentially expressed for the genotype x treatment interaction term. SNPs with a predicted high impact on the protein function were detected within the coding regions of most of the detected DEGs. Moreover, 3 and 16 DEGs were detected within the QTL regions previously described in chromosomes 11 and 5, respectively. In addition to these two specific genomic regions, we also observde large transcriptomic changes from genes spread across the genome in the resistant plants in response to the virus infection. This early response against WMV implied genes involved in plant-pathogen interaction, plant hormone signal transduction, the MAPK signaling pathway or ubiquitin mediated proteolysis, in detriment to the photosynthetic and basal metabolites pathways. Moreover, the gene MELO3C021395, which coded a mediator of RNA polymerase II transcription subunit 33A (MED33A), has been proposed as the candidate gene located on chromosome 11 conferring resistance to WMV. Conclusions The comparative transcriptomic analysis presented here showed that, even though the resistance to WMV in TGR-1551 has a recessive nature, it triggers an active defense response at a transcriptomic level, which involves broad-spectrum resistance mechanisms. Thus, this study represents a step forward on our understanding of the mechanisms underlaying WMV resistance in melon. In addition, it sheds light into a broader topic on the mechanisms of recessive resistances.

The importance of augmenting the peri-implant soft- and hard-tissue architecture is now widely accepted. However, while most contemporary research supports this premise, clinicians are encountering peri-implant soft tissue defects with increasing frequency, which they are therefore required to reconstruct. These complications can result from the difficulty of establishing an appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan or from suboptimal clinical situations (implant malposition, insufficient vestibular alveolar bone thickness or inadequate mucosal thickness). In this context, it is the peri-implant soft-tissue phenotype that most influences esthetic and health-related results in the short and long term. This article describes two clinical cases in which a modification of the apical access technique is presented that may be useful in clinical scenarios requiring large gains in mucosal thickness. Use of the modified bilaminar apical access with de-epithelialized free gingival graft technique showed promising results, with a significant increase in mucosal thickness and satisfactory outcomes in esthetics and peri-implant health.

Some evidence supports the influence of implant macro-design on primary stability. Additionally, tactile perception can be used to assess implant stability when placing the implant. This research aimed to quantify the primary and secondary stability of three implant systems with two different macro geometries (cylindrical and conical) determined based on the insertion torque and the implant stability quotient (ISQ) at the moment of implant placement as a function of implant-related factors (length, width, dental arch, and implant location in the arch), intraoperative factors (bone density determined subjectively by the clinician’s tactile perception), and patient-related factors (age, gender, and bone density determined objectively based on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: 102 implants from three implant systems with two different macro geometries (conical and cylindrical) were placed in 53 patients. The insertion torque, the ISQ at the implant placement (ISQ0), and the bone quality according to the clinician’s tactile sensation were recorded on the day of the surgery. After a three-month healing period, the ISQ was re-evaluated (ISQ3). Results: The cylindrical implants exhibited significantly higher insertion torque and ISQ values at the moment of the surgery and after three months compared to the conical implants. The cylindrical implants also showed significantly lower indices of tactile evaluation of bone quality during the implant placement surgery. However, no differences were demonstrated in the bone density measured objectively using CBCT. (4) Conclusions: The cylindrical implants achieved the highest values for primary stability (Newtons × centimeter (Ncm) and ISQ) and secondary stability (ISQ after three months). The insertion torque was the variable that most influenced the ISQ on the day of the surgery. The implant location (incisors–canines, bicuspids–molars) and the implant macro geometry were the variables that most influenced the secondary stability (ISQ at three months).

Background and Objectives: Primary outcome: To assess the level of agreement between the objective and subjective methods for recording gingival colour in each area of the gingiva. Secondary outcome: To compare performance of the subjective visual method of gingival colour selection by a male observer and a female observer. Materials and Methods: A chromatic study was conducted on a total of 101 participants, in five gingival zones, from the free gingival margin to the mucogingival line, using a SpectroShade Micro spectrophotometer for the objective method and 21 ad hoc ceramic gingival shade tabs for the subjective method. A man and a woman of the same age, with the same amount of clinical experience in dentistry, selected the tab that most resembled the colour of participants’ gingiva. The “chromatic error” was then assessed by calculating the colour difference (using the Euclidean and CIEDE2000 formulae) between the CIELAB coordinates of the shade tab selected and the objective coordinates of the gingiva. The unweighted Kappa coefficient was used to calculate the level of agreement between observers. Results: For the male observer, the mean chromatic errors varied between ΔEab* 10.3 and 13.1 units, while for the female observer, the mean errors varied between ΔEab* 11.1 and 12.8: these differences were not statistically significant. Similarly, no statistically significant differences were found between the mean chromatic errors for the five gingival zones in either the male operator (p = 0.100) or the female operator (p = 0.093). The minimum level of agreement (unweighted Kappa) between the observers ranged from 0.1 to 0.4. Conclusions: Subjective selection of gingival colour was very inaccurate, by both the male observer and the female observer, for any area of the gingiva, with no differences identified between them. The level of agreement between the observers was low. These findings suggest that gingival colour should not be determined using solely subjective methods, given that the chromatic errors significantly exceeded the clinical acceptability threshold for gingiva (4.1 units for ΔEab* and 2.9 units for ΔE00). Both observers showed a tendency to select gingival shade tabs that were redder and bluer than the objective colours.

ABSTRACT Background The diagnosis of peri-implantar and periodontal relies mainly on a set of clinical measures and the evaluation of radiographic images. However, these clinical settings alone are not sufficient to determine, much less predict, periimplant bone loss or future implant failure. Early diagnosis of periimplant diseases and its rate of progress may be possible through biomarkers assessment. Once identified, biomarkers of peri-implant and periodontal tissue destruction may alert the clinicians before clinical signs show up. Therefore, it is important to consider developing chair-side diagnostic tests with specificity for a particular biomarker, indicating the current activity of the disease. Methods A search strategy was created at Pubmed and Web of Science to answer the question: “How the molecular point-of-care tests currently available can help in the early detection of peri-implant diseases and throws light on improvements in point of care diagnostics devices?” Results The PerioSafe® PRO DRS (dentognostics GmbH, Jena) and ImplantSafe® DR (dentognostics GmbH, Jena ORALyzer® test kits, already used clinically, can be a helpful adjunct tool in enhancing the diagnosis and prognosis of periodontal/peri-implantar diseases. With the advances of sensor technology, the biosensors can perform daily monitoring of dental implants or periodontal diseases, making contributions to personal healthcare and improve the current status quo of health management and human health. Conclusions Based on the findings, more emphasis is given to the role of biomarkers in diagnosing and monitoring periodontal and peri-implant diseases. By combining these strategies with traditional protocols, professionals could increase the accuracy of early detection of peri-implant and periodontal diseases, predicting disease progression, and monitoring of treatment outcomes.

The main objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the microbiology of maxillary sinus infections and to determine whether an odontogenic origin of the infection can be established. The PIE question posed was the following: In patients with sinus and dental symptomatology who come for ENT or dental assessment and who undergo a microbiological study of the maxillary sinus and are found to have infectious sinus pathology, is the infectious sinus pathology related to an odontogenic origin? The literature review was carried out in PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. A total of 2769 articles were identified in the three databases used. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, and after eliminating duplicates, 55 full-text publications were identified as suitable for inclusion. After reading this series of publications, four articles were excluded due to lack of data in the article. Finally, 51 studies were included in the qualitative analysis. In this study, the microorganisms were classified into three groups: group 1 (microorganisms of the oral microbiome related in the literature to oral pathology, namely caries and periodontal disease), group 2 (microorganisms found in the oral microbiome but not related to oral disease), and group 3 (microorganisms not identified in the microbiome). This review included 51 articles and a total of 6415 patients who underwent surgery in 7051 sinuses. Most sinus infections were caused by group 2 (63.51%) or group 1 (24.21%) bacteria. Within group 1, the most frequent bacteriological agents in sinus infections were Peptostreptococcus spp. (35.22%) and St. Viridans spp. (39.89%). In group 2, the most frequent bacteriological agents in sinus infections were H. influenzae (29%) and Streptococcus spp. (23.63%). In group 3, the most frequent cause of sinusitis of dental origin was dental caries, followed by foreign bodies (implants) and sinus elevation. Different studies have shown that certain species of bacteria isolated from maxillary sinus cultures are more frequently associated with rhinosinusitis of odontogenic origin. The results of this systemic review show that, among the bacterial species most frequently found, anaerobic species predominate over aerobic species, especially Peptostreptococcus and Staphylococcus aureus, which are part of the oral microbiome, suggesting an odontogenic origin of maxillary sinus infection. Therefore, bacterial cultures of maxillary sinus aspirate can be of great use to clinicians in the differential diagnosis of odontogenic sinusitis.

This study aimed to assess marginal bone loss and complication rates of mandibular overdentures retained on two implants with conventional and immediate loading protocols. Twenty edentulous patients were treated with mandibular two-implant-retained overdentures and new complete maxillary dentures. In one half of the sample, the implants were loaded immediately by VulkanLoc® abutments. In the counterpart group, these abutments were connected to the implants two months after implant placement (conventional protocol). Treatment outcomes were evaluated at 2, 6, and 12 months after implant placement. According to the pre- and post-insertion radiographs, there was a mean marginal bone loss of 0.25–0.59 mm (CI 95%) after 13.4 ± 2.1 months of follow-up. There were no significant differences between groups. The failure rate (percentage of implants failing per year) was slightly higher in the conventional loading group (14.0 ± 32.7%) than in the immediate loading group (8.3 ± 18.0%). The findings of the present study suggested that there were no differences in marginal bone loss observed at one year for immediately loaded implants (0.40–0.39 mm) versus conventionally loaded implants (0.44- 0.36 mm) placed for the retention of mandibular overdentures. There were no differences in primary and secondary stability of immediately loaded versus conventional implants; however, in the conventional loading group, stability increased significantly between implant placement compared at both 6 and 12 months post-placement.

Abstract Background Zygomatic implants are widely used in the rehabilitation of severely atrophic maxillae, but implant placement is not without risks, and it can potentially cause damage to related anatomical structures. The aim of this study was to perform a comparative analysis of the accuracy of static navigation systems in placing zygomatic dental implants in comparison to dynamic navigation systems. Methods Sixty zygomatic dental implants were randomly allocated to one of three study groups, categorized by which implant placement strategy was used: A: computer-aided static navigation system (n = 20) (GI); B: computer-aided dynamic navigation system (n = 20) (NI); or C: free-hand technique (n = 20) (FHI). For the computer-aided study groups, a preoperative cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan of the existing situation was performed in order to plan the approach to be used during surgery. Four zygomatic dental implants were inserted in each of fifteen polyurethane stereolithographic models (n = 15), with a postoperative CBCT scan taken after the intervention. The pre- and postoperative CBCT scans were then uploaded to a software program used in dental implantology to analyze the angular deviations, apical end point, and coronal entry point. Student’s t-test was used to analyze the results. Results The results found statistically significant differences in apical end-point deviations between the FHI and NI (p = 0.0053) and FHI and GI (p = 0.0004) groups. There were also statistically significant differences between the angular deviations of the FHI and GI groups (p = 0.0043). Conclusions The manual free-hand technique may enable more accurate placement of zygomatic dental implants than computer-assisted surgical techniques due to the different learning curves required for each zygomatic dental implant placement techniques.

Periodontal diseases (PD) are common chronic inflammatory oral pathologies that are strongly linked to others not found in the mouth cavity. The immune system mediates the host response, which includes the upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines, metalloproteinases, and reactive oxygen species (ROS); the latter may play an important role in the establishment and progression of inflammatory diseases, particularly periodontal disease, via the development of oxidative stress (OS). Natural antioxidants have powerful anti-inflammatory properties, and some can reduce serum levels of key PD indicators such tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin IL-1. This review compiles, through a thorough literature analysis, the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial effects of a variety of natural products, as well as their therapeutic potential in the treatment of PD.

Abstract In this work, we provide instrumental meteorological data recovered for the Extremadura region (interior SW Iberia), from 1826 to mid‐20th century. Meteorological variables such as air temperature, atmospheric pressure, precipitation, wind direction and humidity, among others, were retrieved. In total, more than 750 000 instrumental data in 157 meteorological series belonging to 131 different locations throughout Extremadura were rescued. It must be noted that daily resolution data constitutes 80% of the database. This great effort of digitization and data collection has been carried out with the aim of contributing to a significant expansion of the length of the databases with meteorological information in this region. Therefore, this database will provide a better understanding of climate variability, trends and extreme events of the Extremadura region.

Abstract The majority of edge detection algorithms only deal with grayscale images, while their use with color images remains an open problem. This paper explores different approaches to aggregate color information of RGB and HSV images for edge extraction purposes through the usage of the Sobel operator and Canny algorithm. This paper makes use of Berkeley’s image data set, and to evaluate the performance of the different aggregations, the F-measure is computed. Higher potential of aggregations with HSV channels than with RGB channels is found. This article also shows that depending on the type of image used, RGB or HSV, some methods are more appropriate than others.

(1) Introduction: Apart from the polishing method, conventional or mechanized, the arithmetic mean roughness (Ra) is the most common metric to evaluate the surface roughness of denture base acrylic resins. An overview of the constraints related to this roughness parameter is highlighted in this study. This research introduces new parameters for accessing a functional analysis of surface roughness. (2) Materials and Methods: Five samples of CAD/CAM 3D-printed acrylic resins were prepared. Two polishing techniques, manual and mechanical, were applied. Surface roughness parameters were extracted from a profilometer reading: arithmetic mean height (Ra and Pa), skewness (Rsk and Psk), and kurtosis (Rku and Pku). (3) Results: Significant differences (p < 0.001) were found in the Ra distribution among the study samples, in contrast with the lack of significance in Pa values. Surface roughness parameters revealed an increased coefficient of variance (CV) value due to mechanized polishing across the specimens analyzed. Skewness and kurtosis indicate a more pronounced distribution with the manual polishing technique. (4) Conclusion: This preliminary study exhibits the influence of different polishing protocols on surface roughness parameters. The primary profile, skewness, and kurtosis should be assessed for the surface characterization of acrylic resins.

Abstract Purpose To evaluate the impact of optical coherence tomography (OCT) biomarkers on intravitreal dexamethasone (DEX) implant clinical outcomes in patients with macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion (RVO-ME). Methods Retrospective study conducted on a cohort of patients with RVO-ME, either naïve or previously treated, who underwent treatment with DEX implant and had a follow-up of 6 months. Anatomic success was defined as a central retinal thickness (CRT) 20 hyperreflective foci (HRF) than in those with 20), or disrupted ELM were significantly associated with worse baseline BCVA.

The aging population in developed countries has increased the number of edentulous patients and, therefore, the need for prosthetic rehabilitation to improve their quality of life. Complete dentures are the main treatment option in these cases. The use of CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) in dentistry has improved clinical protocols and outcomes, achieving a reduction in work time and economic costs for the patients. The main objective of this review was to compare the characteristics of conventional and digital dentures, attempting to determine whether the use of new technologies represents an improvement in the properties of removable complete dentures. A bibliographic review was carried out in the PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Scielo, and Embase databases. With the initial search, 157 articles were obtained. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 64 publications were selected for this bibliographic review. The different conclusions of the studies consulted were compared regarding fit and retention, fracture resistance, surface roughness, biocompatibility, and aesthetics, taking into account the different methods of prostheses fabrication. In general, digital prostheses have shown better mechanical properties and, consequently, better biocompatibility and aesthetics than conventional prostheses. However, the obtained results were very heterogeneous, preventing a supported conclusion.

Un garañón, raza Costarricense de Paso, de 5 años, presentó un trauma de pene durante el coito. desarrolló parafimosis complicada con: edema, hematoma, infección local y ulceraciones cutáneas. Se efectúa una revisión de la literatura relacionada con aspectos importantes del tema, incluyendo la perspectiva de bienestar animal en reproducción caballar. Si se considera que el trauma de pene es un problema relativamente frecuente en equinos, es importante publicar esta información, para beneficio del profesional veterinario que trabaja en condiciones de campo sin el adecuado soporte de un hospital equino, como sucede en algunos países. Se describe cómo fabricar, caseramente, y aplicar un suspensorio genital para el manejo conservador exitoso del problema. Se exponen instrucciones generales para prevenir accidentes relacionados con el coito equino. Este tema se considera materia importante para evitar maltrato animal.

Abstract Background Summer squash (Cucurbita pepo: Cucurbitaceae) are a popular horticultural crop for which there is insufficient genomic and transcriptomic information. Gene expression atlases are crucial for the identification of genes expressed in different tissues at various plant developmental stages. Here, we present the first comprehensive gene expression atlas for a summer squash cultivar, including transcripts obtained from seeds, shoots, leaf stem, young and developed leaves, male and female flowers, fruits of seven developmental stages, as well as primary and lateral roots. Results In total, 27,868 genes and 2352 novel transcripts were annotated from these 16 tissues, with over 18,000 genes common to all tissue groups. Of these, 3812 were identified as housekeeping genes, half of which assigned to known gene ontologies. Flowers, seeds, and young fruits had the largest number of specific genes, whilst intermediate-age fruits the fewest. There also were genes that were differentially expressed in the various tissues, the male flower being the tissue with the most differentially expressed genes in pair-wise comparisons with the remaining tissues, and the leaf stem the least. The largest expression change during fruit development was early on, from female flower to fruit two days after pollination. A weighted correlation network analysis performed on the global gene expression dataset assigned 25,413 genes to 24 coexpression groups, and some of these groups exhibited strong tissue specificity. Conclusions These findings enrich our understanding about the transcriptomic events associated with summer squash development and ripening. This comprehensive gene expression atlas is expected not only to provide a global view of gene expression patterns in all major tissues in C. pepo but to also serve as a valuable resource for functional genomics and gene discovery in Cucurbitaceae.

Un equino adulto, raza Ibero, capón. con historia clínica de haber presentado “úlceras e inflamaciones por todo el cuerpo más pérdida crónica de condición” es atendido. El veterinario de la finca envió muestras para biopsia a un laboratorio privado de patología y refirió el paciente al Hospital Equino, Escuela de Medicina Veterinaria, Universidad Nacional, Costa Rica. Mientras el paciente estaba hospitalizado se reciben los resultados del patólogo privado con un diagnóstico de “linfoma histiocítico no epiteliotrópico cutáneo”. El caballo es eutanasiado humanitariamente y el cuerpo examinado en el Departamento de Patología. La necropsia reporta los hallazgos macroscópicos & microscópicos más relevantes confirmando el diagnóstico de “linfoma de células B alto en células T (linfoma histiolinfocítico cutáneo equino)”. Los resultados del examen histopatológico efectuado a varios órganos del paciente mostraron la presencia de un abundante infiltrado mononuclear compuesto de linfocitos, histiocitos y algunas células plasmáticas. Considerando que las patologías dermatológicas están entre los dos primeros grupos de enfermedades que afectan caballos es de gran importancia incluir esta enfermedad en el diagnóstico diferencial.

Abstract Background The main aim of the present study was to examine the relationships among work environment, job satisfaction and burnout in dentists and to analyse the way in which certain sociodemographic variables, such as gender, professional experience and weekly working hours, predict the perception of the work environment. Methods A battery of online questionnaires was sent to 3876 dentists officially registered in the triple-province region of Valencia; the battery included the Survey of Organizational Attributes for Dental Care, the Warr–Cook–Wall Overall Job Satisfaction Scale, the Maslach Burnout Inventory and a series of sociodemographic questions formulated for the specific purpose of this study. To assess the relations with the independent variables, we calculated the Pearson correlation coefficient, the Z-scores were calculated to make effect sizes comparable, and the associations between the scales and the sociodemographic variables were investigated by adjusted multiple regression analysis. Results A total of 336 participants (9.4%) correctly completed the survey in this study. The mean (M) age was 37.6 years old (standard deviation (SD) = 9.6, median (Me) = 34). Participants reported high scores on the work environment and job satisfaction scales, with only limited experiences of burnout (3.8%). Work environment and burnout were significantly and positively predicted by years of professional experience (β = .078; p = .000 and β = .107; p = .004, respectively), and job satisfaction was significantly and positively predicted by weekly hours of work (β = .022; p = .001), without significant differences according to gender. Conclusions Dentists who work over 20 hours a week and have more years of professional experience report having better perceptions of well-being at work, with no significant difference according to gender. It is important to highlight the aspects that improve well-being in dentistry to reduce burnout, which would lead to greater work engagement and better attention to patients.

Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV) emerged in the Mediterranean Basin in 2012 as the first DNA bipartite begomovirus (Geminiviridae family), causing severe yield and economic losses in cucurbit crops. A major resistance locus was identified in the wild melon accession WM-7 (Cucumis melo kachri group), but the mechanisms involved in the resistant response remained unknown. In this work, we used RNA-sequencing to identify disease-associated genes that are differentially expressed in the course of ToLCNDV infection and could contribute to resistance. Transcriptomes of the resistant WM-7 genotype and the susceptible cultivar Piñonet Piel de Sapo (PS) (C. melo ibericus group) in ToLCNDV and mock inoculated plants were compared at four time points during infection (0, 3, 6, and 12 days post inoculation). Different gene expression patterns were observed over time in the resistant and susceptible genotypes in comparison to their respective controls. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in ToLCNDV-infected plants were classified using gene ontology (GO) terms, and genes of the categories transcription, DNA replication, and helicase activity were downregulated in WM-7 but upregulated in PS, suggesting that reduced activity of these functions reduces ToLCNDV replication and intercellular spread and thereby contributes to resistance. DEGs involved in the jasmonic acid signaling pathway, photosynthesis, RNA silencing, transmembrane, and sugar transporters entail adverse consequences for systemic infection in the resistant genotype, and lead to susceptibility in PS. The expression levels of selected candidate genes were validated by qRT-PCR to corroborate their differential expression upon ToLCNDV infection in resistant and susceptible melon. Furthermore, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) with an effect on structural functionality of DEGs linked to the main QTLs for ToLCNDV resistance have been identified. The obtained results pinpoint cellular functions and candidate genes that are differentially expressed in a resistant and susceptible melon line in response to ToLCNDV, an information of great relevance for breeding ToLCNDV-resistant melon cultivars.

To quantify the discolouration of the temporary acetal resins in vivo, based on the weeks of follow-up and the salivary pH in the three thirds of the tooth. To find out if the final CIELAB coordinates can be predicted from the initial colour coordinates, the salivary pH, the situation (in thirds) and the weeks of follow-up. Colour coordinates (L, C, and h) were recorded by spectrophotometry in 13 participants fitted with hybrid provisional complete dentures made of acetal resin. Colour recordings were made on the day of placement and after several weeks of follow-up (6 to 31 weeks). Salivary pH was also measured as a predictor variable for colour change. The ANOVA statistical test and regression models have been used. The highest colour difference according to ∆Eab* was 27.46 units after 15 weeks of follow-up and the lowest was 7.34 units after 17 weeks of follow-up. Neither in the cervical nor in the middle third any regressor variable (initial L*, initial C*, initial h*, salivary pH and weeks of follow-up) was able to significantly predict any of the final colour coordinates (p > 0.05). The colour change of the temporary acetal resins used exceeds the threshold of clinical acceptability, and it is not acceptable to maintain satisfactory aesthetics. The weeks of follow-up and the salivary pH are not capable of satisfactorily predicting the final color coordinates of the acetal resins.

Abstract Cucurbita pepo contains two cultivated subspecies, each of which encompasses four fruit-shape morphotypes (cultivar groups). The Pumpkin, Vegetable Marrow, Cocozelle, and Zucchini Groups are of subsp. pepo and the Acorn, Crookneck, Scallop, and Straightneck Groups are of subsp. ovifera. Recently, a de novo assembly of the C. pepo subsp. pepo Zucchini genome was published, providing insights into its evolution. To expand our knowledge of evolutionary processes within C. pepo and to identify variants associated with particular morphotypes, we performed whole-genome resequencing of seven of these eight C. pepo morphotypes. We report for the first time whole-genome resequencing of the four subsp. pepo (Pumpkin, Vegetable Marrow, Cocozelle, green Zucchini, and yellow Zucchini) morphotypes and three of the subsp. ovifera (Acorn, Crookneck, and Scallop) morphotypes. A high-depth resequencing approach was followed, using the BGISEQ-500 platform that enables the identification of rare variants, with an average of 33.5X. Approximately 94.5% of the clean reads were mapped against the reference Zucchini genome. In total, 3,823,977 high confidence single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified. Within each accession, SNPs varied from 636,918 in green Zucchini to 2,656,513 in Crookneck, and were distributed homogeneously along the chromosomes. Clear differences between subspecies pepo and ovifera in genetic variation and linkage disequilibrium are highlighted. In fact, comparison between subspecies pepo and ovifera indicated 5710 genes (22.5%) with Fst > 0.80 and 1059 genes (4.1%) with Fst = 1.00 as potential candidate genes that were fixed during the independent evolution and domestication of the two subspecies. Linkage disequilibrium was greater in subsp. ovifera than in subsp. pepo, perhaps reflective of the earlier differentiation of morphotypes within subsp. ovifera. Some morphotype-specific genes have been localized. Our results offer new clues that may provide an improved understanding of the underlying genomic regions involved in the independent evolution and domestication of the two subspecies. Comparisons among SNPs unique to particular subspecies or morphotypes may provide candidate genes responsible for traits of high economic importance.

Abstract Background Diabetic macular edema (DME) can be treated with different alternatives, among them Dexamethasone intravitreal implant 0.7 mg (DEX 0.7) has demonstrated that may improve both central macular thickness (CMT) and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the intravitreal dexamethasone implant Ozurdex® in patients with different subtypes of diabetic macular edema over a 6-month follow-up period. Methods Eighty-four (29 naïve and 55 previously treated) eyes were included in this retrospective study. For each patient, the BCVA [Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) charts] and macular thickness on optical coherence tomography (OCT) at baseline visit and within the 2nd, 4th, and 6th months of follow-up were obtained. The main outcomes measurements were the mean change in BCVA and in CMT with respect to the baseline value. The percentage of patients gaining ≥5 letters and ≥ 10 letters in BCVA was also analyzed. Results: A total of 84 eyes, 29 (34.5%) naïve and 55 (65.5%) non-naïve, from 69 patients were included in the study. Statement of the problem: The gingival configuration around implant abutments is of paramount importance for preserving the underlying marginal bone, and hence for the long-term success of dental implants. Objective: The objective was to study, clinically and histologically, the effects of the change in the morphology of abutments connected to the endosseous implant, and of their surface treatment. In particular, the objective was to ascertain the effect of changing the shape of the transepithelial pillar and the treatment of its surface on the dimensions, quality and health of the components of the peri-implant biological space, such as the dimensions of the epithelial and connective tissues of the biological space, the concentration of inflammatory cells and the density of collagen fibers. Methods: A clinical trial of 10 patients with a totally edentulous maxilla, who had four implants (IPX4010_GALIMPLANT®, Sarria, Spain) inserted in the area of the first and second molars on both sides with computer-guided implant surgery, was conducted with the final purpose of assessing the quality of the peri-implant soft tissue attachment around the transepithelial abutments which were employed (aesthetic machined (RM), aesthetic anodized (RA), slim machined (SM) and slim anodized (SA)). At 8 weeks and following the collection of the samples (removal of the implant-abutment assembly with its surrounding hard and soft tissue) and their processing for subsequent histological and histomorphometric analysis in order to study the dimensions, quality and health of the peri-implant soft tissue area, the variables previously mentioned were determined according to the aims of the study. By using appropriate diameter trephine in order to obtain a useful fringe of soft tissue around the transepithelial pillars, ANOVA and chi-square tests were performed. Results: The SPSS statistical analysis ANOVA results revealed that the machined slim abutments have a better performance considering the variables analyzed with epithelial and connective attachment heights of 1.52 mm and 2.3 mm, respectively, and that connective density (density of collagen fibers) was high at 85.7% of the sample size affected by the design for the slim abutments and 92.9% of the high-density sample size affected by the surface treatment for the machined surface. Conclusions: All variables studied, despite the small sample size, showed the superiority of the slim machined abutment among the four groups.

Purpose: Within this context, this pilot study aimed to evaluate the healing dynamics process of the hard palate after free gingival graft harvesting in the short term (3 months), utilizing digital imaging technology and tridimensional analysis software. Furthermore, assessing the results found to verify the existence of a relationship between gender or age with tissue loss. Materials and Methods: For connective-tissue harvesting, fifteen patients with gingival recessions type (RT) 1 and RT2 were selected. On the surgery day (before the procedure) and after three months, palatal impressions were taken in all patients, and cast models were done for posterior model scanning. The following variables were analyzed: mean thickness alterations (x¯ TA), maximum thickness loss (MTL), mean maximum thickness loss (x¯ MTL), and volume alterations (VA). A descriptive and bivariate analysis of the data was done. The data were submitted for statistical evaluation and were significant if p < 0.05. Results: Fifteen patients were analyzed, 11 females (73.3%) and four males (26.7%). The patients’ average age was 28 ± 8.52 years (ranging between 16 and 48 years old). The palatal wound region’s mean thickness and volume changes were −0.26 mm (±0.31) and 46.99 mm3 (±47.47 mm3) at three months. There was no statistically significant result correlating age/gender with any variable evaluated. Conclusions: Connective tissue graft harvesting promoted changes with a standard volume and thickness loss of palatal soft tissue. A 3D digital evaluation was a non-invasive method with a reproducible technique for measuring thickness or volume after connective tissue is collected. There was no relationship between age/gender and any variables analyzed.

Background and Objectives: To study the validity and the degree of representability of the toothguide 3D Master, with 26 physically shade tabs, on the natural tooth colour on a sample of the Spanish population. Materials and Methods: Natural tooth colour was measured in a sample of 1361 Spanish participants of both genders distributed within an age range of 18 and 89 years of age. The colour coordinates were calculated and the frequency of the 26 physically shade tabs of the toothguide as well as the “intermediate shades” (without physical representation in toothguide) through the Easyshade Compact (Vita-Zahnfabrik) spectrophotometer using the 3D Master System nomenclature. The colour differences between the “intermediate shades” were calculated using the Euclidean formula (ΔEab*). The program used for the present descriptive statistical analysis of the results was SAS 9.1.3. Results: A total of 49 “intermediate shades” were registered in 816 participants (60%). The colour coordinates of the 49 ‘intermediate shades’ cover colour coordinates ranging from 0M1.5 (L* 100.0, C* 7.70, h* 112.2) to 5M2.5 (L* 56.8, C* 35.8, h* 78.5). Not all possible 3D Master System’s “intermediate shades” were registered in the population studied. 82.4% of the colour differences among the “intermediate shades” were clinically unacceptable (ΔEab* ≥ 5.5 units). Conclusions: Only 40% of the population studied presented a natural tooth colour belonging to the 3D Master Toothguide’s physical shade tabs.

Background and Objectives: The objective of our clinical trial was to determine the effectiveness of the deep dry needling technique (DDN) (neuromuscular deprogramming) as a first step in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders. Methods and Materials: The double-blind randomized clinical trial comprised 36 patients meeting the inclusion criteria who had signed the corresponding informed consent form. The participants were randomly distributed into two groups, the Experimental group (Group E) and the Control group (Group C). Group E received bilateral DDN on the masseter muscle, while Group C received a simulation of the technique (PN). All the participants were evaluated three times: pre-needling, 10 min post-needling, and through a follow-up evaluation after 15 days. These evaluations included, among other tests: pain evaluation using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and bilateral muscle palpation with a pressure algometer; evaluation of the opening pattern and range of the mouth, articular sounds and dental occlusion using T-scans; and electromyography, which was used to evaluate the muscle tone of the masseter muscles, in order to control changes in mandibular position. Results: Digital control of occlusion using Tec-Scan (digital occlusion analysis) showed a significant reduction both in the time of posterior disclusion and in the time needed to reach maximum force in an MI position after needling the muscle, which demonstrated that there were variations in the static position and the trajectory of the jaw. The symmetry of the arch while opening and closing the mouth was recovered in a centric relation, with an increase in the opening range of the mouth after the procedure. Conclusions: facial pain is significantly reduced and is accompanied by a notable reduction in muscle activity after needling its trigger points.

The development of reproductive barriers promotes within-species divergence and is a requisite for speciation to occur. Mate recognition in the rotifer B. plicatilis is mediated through a surface glycoprotein called Mating Recognition Protein (MRP). Here we investigate the genetic variation of the mmr-b, MRP coding, gene in different natural populations of B. plicatilis from the Iberian Peninsula, that present different degree of population differentiation, with known adaptive divergence in some cases. The MRP gene consists of several nearly identical tandem repeats. We found a relatively high diversity within and among populations both in the number of repeats, as well as in the nucleotide sequence. Despite that most changes are neutral, variation that can potentially affect the protein function was found in two polymorphic sites within a repeat in some of these populations. Although being mostly subject to stabilizing selection, we have found a noticeable pattern of increasing mmr-b gene diversification correlated to increasing differences in environmental factors. The interplay between genetic differentiation, local adaptation and differentiation of the mating recognition system can lead to speciation events in nearly sympatric populations.

The early secretory pathway involves bidirectional transport between the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and the Golgi apparatus and is mediated by coat protein complex I (COPI)-coated and coat protein complex II (COPII)-coated vesicles. COPII vesicles are involved in ER to Golgi transport meanwhile COPI vesicles mediate intra-Golgi transport and retrograde transport from the Golgi apparatus to the ER. The key component of COPI vesicles is the coatomer complex, that is composed of seven subunits (α/β/β’/γ/δ/ε/ζ). In Arabidopsis two genes coding for the β-COP subunit have been identified, which are the result of recent tandem duplication. Here we have used a loss-of-function approach to study the function of β-COP. The results we have obtained suggest that β-COP is required for plant growth and salt tolerance. In addition, β-COP function seems to be required for maintaining the structure of the Golgi apparatus.

Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV) is a bipartite whitefly transmitted begomovirus, responsible since 2013 of severe damages in cucurbit crops in Southeastern Spain. Zucchini (Cucurbita pepo) is the most affected species, but melon (Cucumis melo) and cucumber (Cucumis sativus) are also highly damaged by the infection. The virus has spread across Mediterranean basin and European countries, and integrated control measures are not being enough to reduce economic losses. The identification of resistance genes is required to develop resistant cultivars. In this assay, we studied the inheritance of the resistance to ToLCNDV previously identified in two Cucurbita moschata accessions. We generated segregating populations crossing both resistant pumpkins, an American improved cultivar Large Cheese (PI 604506) and an Indian landrace (PI 381814), with a susceptible C. moschata genotype (PI 419083). The analysis of symptoms and viral titers of all populations established the same monogenic recessive genetic control in both resistant accessions, and the allelism tests suggest the occurrence of alleles of the same locus. By genotyping with a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) collection evenly distributed along the C. moschata genome, a major quantitative trait locus (QTL) was identified in chromosome 8 controlling resistance to ToLCNDV. This major QTL was also confirmed in the interspecific C. moschata × C. pepo segregating populations, although C. pepo genetic background affected the resistance level. Molecular markers here identified, linked to the ToLCNDV resistance locus, are highly valuable for zucchini breeding programs, allowing the selection of improved commercial materials. The duplication of the candidate region within the C. moschata genome was studied, and genes with paralogs or single-copy genes were identified. Its synteny with the region of chromosome 17 of the susceptible C. pepo revealed an INDEL including interesting candidate genes. The chromosome 8 candidate region of C. moschata was also syntenic to the region in chromosome 11 of melon, previously described as responsible of ToLCNDV resistance. Common genes in the candidate regions of both cucurbits, with high- or moderate-impact polymorphic SNPs between resistant and susceptible C. moschata accessions, are interesting to study the mechanisms involved in this recessive resistance.

The presence of isolated or multiple gingival recessions in the mandibular anterior region is a challenge for the clinician, as they may be associated with a shallow vestibule, high frenum insertion and/or little or no attached gingiva. Only limited evidence is available on the use of the double lateral sliding bridge flap technique with connective tissue graft (CTG) technique for treating gingival recessions in the mandibular anterior region. The aim of this study was to describe and evaluate the clinical and esthetic outcomes of the double lateral sliding bridge flap technique with CTG on isolated and multiple gingival recessions at the level of the mandibular incisors. Nine patients required treatment of gingival recessions in the mandibular incisors at the University of Salamanca (Spain) (seven females, two males; mean age: 27.9 ± 6.9) with a total of 14 isolated (42.9%) and multiple (57.1%) Miller class II and III gingival recessions. After a mean follow-up of 36 months, the mean percentage of root coverage was 80.5% for all treated recessions. Statistically significant differences (p < 0.05), were observed for reduction in recession depth, increased width of keratinized tissue and increased gingival thickness, this being dependent on the Miller class. The esthetic outcome was acceptable, with a final mean esthetic score of 7.4 out of 10. The double lateral sliding bridge flap surgical technique with CTG is an effective procedure for the coverage of isolated and multiple gingival recessions in the anterior mandibular region, as it offers satisfactory esthetic results.

Aim: The loosening of abutment screws is a recurrent problem in oral implantology that lacks a consensual solution. The aim of this paper is to review the literature available in search for strategies that might lessen the torque loss of abutment screws. Materials and Methods: A bibliographic search was conducted in PubMed with the terms “dental implants AND (screw loosening or screw preload),” from which the papers proposing solutions to torque loss in abutment screws loosening in single implants were selected. Results: According to the review, our results are two folds. It has been found that there are, on the one hand, strategies that affect screw tightening (tightening 10 min after the first tightening and application of a torque value above that recommended by the manufacturer); and on the other hand, approaches that affect implant-prosthesis design and materials (connection, screw, and internal thread of the implant). Conclusion: Taking these findings into an account, it is possible to claim that torque loss is multifactorial in that there is no single valuable strategy for reducing screw loosening. Thus, materials and screw coatings, connection design, and appropriate clinical strategies should be carefully selected to minimize the torque loss, thereby increasing the durability of the implant prosthesis and the patient's quality of life.

In the last two decades, information entropy measures have been relevantly applied in fuzzy clustering problems in order to regularize solutions by avoiding the formation of partitions with excessively overlapping clusters. Following this idea, relative entropy or divergence measures have been similarly applied, particularly to enable that kind of entropy-based regularization to also take into account, as well as interact with, cluster size variables. Particularly, since Rényi divergence generalizes several other divergence measures, its application in fuzzy clustering seems promising for devising more general and potentially more effective methods. However, previous works making use of either Rényi entropy or divergence in fuzzy clustering, respectively, have not considered cluster sizes (thus applying regularization in terms of entropy, not divergence) or employed divergence without a regularization purpose. Then, the main contribution of this work is the introduction of a new regularization term based on Rényi relative entropy between membership degrees and observation ratios per cluster to penalize overlapping solutions in fuzzy clustering analysis. Specifically, such Rényi divergence-based term is added to the variance-based Fuzzy C-means objective function when allowing cluster sizes. This then leads to the development of two new fuzzy clustering methods exhibiting Rényi divergence-based regularization, the second one extending the first by considering a Gaussian kernel metric instead of the Euclidean distance. Iterative expressions for these methods are derived through the explicit application of Lagrange multipliers. An interesting feature of these expressions is that the proposed methods seem to take advantage of a greater amount of information in the updating steps for membership degrees and observations ratios per cluster. Finally, an extensive computational study is presented showing the feasibility and comparatively good performance of the proposed methods.

Clinicians should be aware of the main methods and materials to face the challenge of bone shortage by manufacturing customized grafts, in order to repair defects. This study aims to carry out a bibliographic review of the existing methods to manufacture customized bone scaffolds through 3D technology and to identify their current situation based on the published papers. A literature search was carried out using “3D scaffold”, “bone regeneration”, “robocasting” and “3D printing” as descriptors. This search strategy was performed on PubMed (MEDLINE), Scopus and Cochrane Library, but also by hand search in relevant journals and throughout the selected papers. All the papers focusing on techniques for manufacturing customized bone scaffolds were reviewed. The 62 articles identified described 14 techniques (4 subtraction + 10 addition techniques). Scaffold fabrication techniques can be also be classified according to the time at which they are developed, into Conventional techniques and Solid Freeform Fabrication techniques. The conventional techniques are unable to control the architecture of the pore and the pore interconnection. However, current Solid Freeform Fabrication techniques allow individualizing and generating complex geometries of porosity. To conclude, currently SLA (Stereolithography), Robocasting and FDM (Fused deposition modeling) are promising options in customized bone regeneration.

This study describes the clinical and esthetic outcome of n apical surgical treatment on peri-implant soft tissue dehiscence in an implant with a poor prognosis in the esthetic area. The patient presented a compromised situation of clinical attachment loss both in the 1.2 implant and in the adjacent teeth. A biphasic approach consisted firstly of a connective tissue graft accessed by apical and then, 11 months later, a palatal flap technique plus a connective tissue graft. After 20 months of healing, surgical approaches without vertical releasing incisions showed a gain in recession reduction over the implant ranging from 0.3 to 2.7 mm (CI 95%), in addition to a gain in width (2 mm) and thickness (2.3 mm) of the keratinized mucosa. With respect to the white esthetic score, 4 points were gained, and with respect to the pink esthetic score, 3 points were gained. With the use of the apical approach technique and the palatal flap technique, satisfactory results are obtained in the treatment of recessions on implants, improving the amount of keratinized mucosa and the esthetic result in an objective manner in the anterior area.

Traditionally, the last step of edge detection algorithms, which is called scaling-evaluation, produces the final output classifying each pixel as edge or nonedge. This last step is usually done based on local evaluation methods. The local evaluation makes this classification based on measures obtained for every pixel. By contrast, in this work, we propose a global evaluation approach based on the idea of edge list to produce a solution that suits more with the human perception. In particular, we propose a new evaluation method that can be combined with any classical edge detection algorithm in an easy way to produce a novel edge detection algorithm. The new global evaluation method is divided in four steps: in first place we build the edge lists, that we have called edge segments. In second place we extract the characteristics associated to each segment: length, intensity, location, and so on. In the third step we learn the characteristics that make a segment good enough to become an edge. At the fourth step, we apply the classification task. In this work we have built the ground truth of edge list necessary for the supervised classification. Finally, we test the effectiveness of this algorithm against other classical algorithms based on local evaluation approach.

Populations of passively dispersed organisms in continental aquatic habitats typically show high levels of neutral genetic differentiation despite their high dispersal capabilities. Several evolutionary factors, including founder events, local adaptation, and life cycle features such as high population growth rates and the presence of propagule banks, have been proposed to be responsible for this paradox. Here, we have modeled the colonization process to assess the impact of migration rate, population growth rate, population size, local adaptation and life-cycle features on the population genetic structure in these organisms. Our simulations show that the strongest effect on population structure are persistent founder effects, resulting from the interaction of a few population founders, high population growth rates, large population sizes and the presence of diapausing egg banks. In contrast, the role of local adaptation, genetic hitchhiking and migration is limited to small populations in these organisms. Our results indicate that local adaptation could have different impact on genetic structure in different groups of zooplankters.

The objective of this prospective clinical study was to analyze the pain (intensity, location and type) that patients presented after the placement of different types of orthodontic appliances: conventional, low friction, lingual and aligners. The sample consisted of 120 patients divided into four groups: conventional (CON), low friction (LF), lingual (LO) and aligners (INV). The participants were given the Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (Ortho-SF-MPQ), where they had to record the pain intensity (no pain, mild, moderate or intense) and the periodontal location at different time points, from the first 4 h to 7 days after the start of treatment. In all the study groups, the most frequent location was both anterior arches, with maximum values between 56.7% (CON group at 24 h) and 30% (LO group at 4 h). The “whole mouth” and “complete lower arch” locations were indicated only by the patients in the lingual group. Regarding pain intensity, the patients reported a higher percentage of mild–moderate pain during the first 3 days of treatment (96.7% in LO at 4 h, 86.7% in CON, 83.3% in LF and 90% in INV at 24 h); later, the reported pain decreased to no pain/mild pain, especially in the lingual group, until reaching values close to zero at 7 days post-treatment. The most frequent type of pain was acute in the low friction and lingual groups (with maxima of 60% and 46.7% at 24 h, respectively). On the contrary, in the conventional (36.7% at 4 h) and Invisalign (40% at 24 h) groups, the sensitive type was the most frequent. There are differences regarding periodontal pain in its intensity, location and type according to the use of different orthodontic techniques.

Background and objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of friction on design of the type of bracket, patients’ perception of pain and the impact on their oral health-related quality of life. Materials and Methods: A randomized clinical trial was carried out with 90 patients (62.2% women and 37.8% men) with three kinds of fixed multi-bracket appliances: Conventional (GC), fixed multi-bracket low friction (GS) and self-ligating (GA). The VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) was used to determine pain during the first seven days of treatment at different points in time. The patients were also given the OHIP-14 (Oral Health Impact Profile) questionnaire to analyse their oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) after the first 30 days of treatment. The ANOVA test was used for the analysis of the variables and the post hoc Bonferroni test for the comparison between groups. Results: Maximum pain was observed between one and two days after the start of treatment. The GC group showed the greatest degree of pain, with maximum values (4.5 ± 2.0) at 24 h. The self-ligation brackets show lower impact on patients’ oral health-related quality of life (0.8 ± 2.2, p < 0.01). Conclusions: Friction in the type of bracket influences pain and the Oral Health-Related Quality of Life of patients who use multi-bracket fixed orthodontics.

A alimentação variada e equilibrada é garantia de um estado nutricional adequado, necessário para manter um bom nível de saúde geral e oral na população. Neste sentido propusemo-nos analisar o conteúdo da dieta e a frequência de ingestão de alimentos e a sua relação com determinantes sócio demográficos, com o valor do Índice de Dentes Cariados, Perdidos e Obturados (CPOD), Índice de Placa Simplificado (IPS) e Índice de Massa Corporal (IMC). Este é um estudo observacional e transversal, realizado numa amostra aleatória de 661 adolescentes com idades entre 11 e 17 anos, com média de 13.22 anos (Dp=1.139), da zona Centro de Portugal. A caracterização sócio demográfica, o conteúdo da dieta e a frequência de ingestão de alimentos foram obtidos através de um questionário auto-preenchido pelos adolescentes, e o registo do Índice CPOD, por observação da cavidade oral. A avaliação da higiene oral foi obtida pelo índice de placa. O índice de massa corporal foi obtido através da avaliação do peso e da estatura dos adolescentes. A média do índice CPOD foi de 2.23 (Dp=2.484). Os resultados relativos ao perfil antropométrico real evidenciam que 68.1% dos adolescentes apresentam um Percentil de IMC ente P 5 e P< 85. Da amostra, 67,9% dos adolescentes referiu que considera ter uma alimentação saudável, com a ingestão de 5 a 6 refeições por dia. A maioria dos adolescentes (81,7%) ingere refrigerantes e os rapazes bebem mais refrigerantes que as raparigas (85,5% Vs 78,8). O consumo de refrigerantes tem influência (apresenta evidências significativas) no índice de CPOD dos adolescentes (t=-2,224, p=0,028). Os adolescentes que apresentam melhores hábitos alimentares são os mais novos (r=-0.155; p 0.000) e com um IMC menor (r=-0.079; p=0.046).

The aim of this research project was to analyze the influence of slot size and low-friction on pain and the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of subjects receiving fixed appliances. A group of 120 patients (61 male, 59 female) were chosen for this randomized clinical trial. Participants were classified into four groups (30 patients in each). We compared conventional (C group) and low-friction (LF group) brackets and 0.018″ and 0.022″ slots. Pain was assessed at 4 (T0), 8 (T1), and 24 (T2) hours, and 2 (T3), 3 (T4), 4 (T5), 5 (T6), 6 (T7), and 7 (T8) days after the start of treatment by using the visual analogue scale (VAS). OHRQoL was assessed at 1 month using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). Data was analyzed using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) test with post-hoc Bonferroni correction. For pain on the visual analogue scale, statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were found for T0 and T3. For OHRQoL, statistically significant differences (p < 0.01) were found in the domains of physical pain, psychological discomfort, psychological disability, and overall OHIP. The group with 0.022″ low-friction brackets showed a lower pain score and less impact on OHRQoL. The type of bracket system used and bracket slot size influenced patients’ perceptions of pain and their OHRQoL.
