3. Reconfigurable high step‐up DC to DC converter for microgrid applications.

Abstract

Here, a high gain DC–DC converter which is based on switched capacitor (SC) and switched LCL (SLCL) cells is presented. The diode employed in the classical passive switched inductor (SI) cell is replaced by a capacitor in the proposed SLCL cell to achieve higher voltage gain. Two switches—one each in the positive and negative DC rails of the supply are employed to charge and discharge the inductors of SLCL cells. A generic structure comprising of N and M number of SLCL cells in the positive and negative DC rails respectively along with K number of SC cells is presented. To validate the proposed gain extension concept, a two‐switch based converter comprising of 2 SLCL and 1 SC cells is synthesized and its operation is described in detail. The voltage gain expression of the proposed SLCL‐SC converter is derived. Experimental results are obtained from a 25 to 380 V prototype converter which operates at a full‐load efficiency of 94.22% at 200 W. Since the switches employed in the proposed converter are operated at a moderate and safe duty ratio of D = 0.51, the voltage stress on the switches is about 25% of the output voltage while the diodes are subjected to even lesser voltage stress levels of only one‐fifth of the output voltage. The main salient features of the proposed topology are its (i) modular structure, (ii) ability to provide higher voltage gain values at lower duty ratios (iii) reduced voltage stress on the semiconductor devices and (iv) reduced conduction losses due to the replacement of diodes with capacitors in SLCL cells. 16. Analysis of a novel (LCR)trap-LC-RC filter with improved performance for standalone inverters.

Abstract

This work introduces a new passive filter structure for a pulse width modulated inverter used in standalone applications. The proposed structure consists of an additional capacitor connected across the resistance-capacitance branch of the traditional LCR filter and an additional resistor connected across the trap filter capacitor in the traditional (LC)trap-LCR filter configuration which helps to reduce damping power loss and increase harmonic attenuation while maintaining the same overall filter size of conventional filters. A comprehensive parameter design procedure of the proposed filter is introduced which considers inverter switching frequency and choice of damping components. Further, particle swarm optimisation algorithm is newly employed in this work to minimise resonant peaking on the premise of allowable values of overall filter inductance, capacitance and resistance. Simulation and experimental results are presented to analyse the performance of the proposed filter and a comparison is established with other passive filter topologies. A five-level inverter with the proposed filter is implemented using a SPARTAN- 6 XC6SLX25 processor on an experimental set-up. The experimental results show an attractive performance of the proposed filter in providing improved inverter output waveforms, significant harmonic reduction in the high-frequency band, reduced resonant peaking, lesser harmonic distortion and lower damping power loss. Abstract

An ideal anticancer drug would be one that preferentially kills tumor cells with the least toxicity to normal cells. Cleistanthin A, a diphyllin glycoside of the tropical plant Cleistanthus collinus, was found to possess cytotoxic and tumor regressing properties. To find out whether this compound acts selectively on proliferating cells it was tested against quiescent and proliferating human lymphocytes. Mitogen-stimulated and unstimulated human lymphocytes were treated with cleistanthin A. A cytotoxicity assay using MTT was used to assess the viability of the cells. Percentage viability of the unstimulated and treated cells were normalized to that of the untreated and unstimulated cells and percentage viability of stimulated and treated cells were normalized to that of stimulated and untreated cells. Quiescent lymphocytes were refractory to the action of cleistanthin A. Only proliferating cells were killed. Cell death was proportional to the percentage of cells in the proliferating stage and was also dose-dependent. Quiescent lymphocytes pretreated with cleistanthin A had the ability to proliferate upon subsequent stimulation with PHA. These results indicate that cleistanthin A does not affect the viability of quiescent cells. Also, it did not affect the proliferating potential of quiescent cells. However, this compound drastically affected proliferating cells by reducing their viability to 10-20%. Our results therefore indicate that the antiproliferative property of cleistanthin A could be used in regimens for treating tumors with extensive proliferative potencies.

Abstract

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are responsible for the remodeling of the extracellular matrix throughout the body. Inhibitors of these enzymes have been suggested as potential therapeutic agents for use in treatment of cancer. Our observations showed that cleistanthin A, a diphyllin glycoside from the leaves of the plant Cleistanthus collinus inhibited MMP-9, a 92 kDa matrix metalloproteinase. Further evaluation of this compound might reveal many such novel properties that might help in the evolution of this compound as an anticancer drug.
